Fashion month might be a regularly scheduled biannual event, but the timing never fails to surprise me. It creeps up on me slowly and all at once, and before I know it, I’m in the thick of it. So you can imagine my surprise when I realized that London Fashion Week had already come and gone. And with it came a strikingly cohesive message from the designers who showcased their collections there. Their designs represented the fact that a new era for Britain has arrived.
Last season, London Fashion Week attendees were left in a state of shock upon the realization that the queen had passed just days before the events. Celebrations were halted, and runway shows continued on paying homage to the queen. After many “changing of the guards” later, we’ve reached the first fashion week hosted by London since.
A show that truly marks the change that has happened in London since last fashion week was none other than Burberry. The announcement of Daniel Lee’s departure from Bottega Veneta and arrival at Burberry left everyone waiting to see what he would do. His work sent a clear message. The designs mirrored traditional British emblems but with an update—think head-to-toe plaid, oversize fur hats that resemble those of the queen’s guard, and traditional tailoring paired with graphic T-shirts.
The 2023 update on the traditional British wardrobe sounds exactly like what I would like to be wearing this upcoming fall and winter. One thing that LFW designers had this season was fun. Below, find the seven trends they showcased that are guaranteed to take over next fall.
Given the sheer quantity of trends that come out of any given runway season, standout colors can oftentimes fail to garner the attention they deserve, being deprioritized in reports because of barely there miniskirts, motorcycle tropes, and voluminous silhouettes. But not this season. After a ubiquitous presence at New York and London Fashion Week, no one can deny that red—specifically a vibrant, chili-pepper red—is one of if not *the* standout trend of fashion month thus far, surpassing even the most shocking garments that’ve come down the runway.
The list of brands that have included at least one bright-red look is endless, with inclusions ranging from Tory Burch and David Koma to Sandy Liang and Proenza Schouler. And it hasn’t only found a place on the runways. On the streets outside of shows, attendees in both London and New York have styled the shade to their hearts’ content in the form of handbags, hair accessories, eyewear, ready-to-wear, and more. Below, see every way that chili-pepper red has infiltrated fashion month, from the catwalk to the sidewalk.

For some, February marks the last stretch of winter. Spring is on the horizon, and with that leap forward comes the prospect of new trends and warmer temperatures. But if you can believe it, fashion veterans aren’t thinking about spring; they’re thinking even further ahead to next fall. We don’t prefer winter as much, as it’s the beginning of fashion month when designers worldwide show their fall/winter collections. While there’s no telling what trends will take off, following the runways can give clues about what’s coming. It’s why as editors, we spend the entire month devouring lookbooks, staring at street-style images, and running from show to show in Copenhagen and New York in search of what’s next. And while we’re still in the throws of fashion month (Paris and Milan’s fashion weeks are still to come), I feel one week has already set the tone for the season: menswear week.
Admittedly, as a fashion editor primarily covering womenswear, following menswear week wasn’t always my top priority. But, as collections were released and two other cities’ fashion weeks concluded (and London is happening now), I’ve found that I can not stop thinking about menswear week. For me, it felt like designers were able to capture what many brands have failed to do as of late: meld function and fashion in a forward-thinking way. It wasn’t about sending oversized t-shirts down the runway and claiming they’re “androgynous” but instead using tailoring, styling, and accessories to push the envelope.
The looks spotted in menswear collections, in my mind, will set the tone for the rest of the year. And to prove that point, I’ve rounded up eight trends from the Fall/Winter 2023 menswear collections worth knowing about and shopped them out in both departments. I look at clothes for a living, attending press previews of future collections, test-driving popular pieces, and scouring every brand’s new arrivals section on the daily, and somehow, I manage not to succumb to my desire to actually buy them all. Fashion week, though, is a whole other story. And after seven days of nonstop fashion stimuli, I’m giving in to temptation and shopping to my heart’s content—or rather, my credit limit.
Though I’m hardly finished studying the contents of the collections I just witnessed debut, I do have a pretty strong grasp on the items that made the loudest splash throughout the last week in New York, from the color red’s dominance on the runways (as well as the streets outside) to the abundance of bows, alluring hosiery, artistic jewelry and hardware, among other dangerously pretty things. So, without further ado, bare witness to my post-fashion week shopping list, aka 30 items I simply can’t resist after watching the first of next fall’s collections unveil, by scrolling down below.
When you think of fashion week, your mind may automatically jump to clothing. While it’s true that clothing is doubtlessly the focal point, as more and more beauty brands have become involved in fashion week, beauty has become an increasingly important aspect for designers to consider. Beauty can help designers express their vision and either complement or contrast the clothes to heighten their message. And just as the clothes shown set the forthcoming trends, the beauty looks we see at fashion week do the same.
From backstages at New York Fashion Week this season, I watched beauty trends emerge before my eyes. While some beauty looks, like French manicures and slicked-back buns, seemed like they were further cementing themselves into the zeitgeist, newer trends, like goth-inspired glamour and metallic accents, felt like they were just breaking into the scene. Keep reading for the best beauty trends I saw this season at New York Fashion Week—plus some of the key products that were actually used to create them.
Clearly, Wednesday-core is here to stay—and you can kiss goodbye to the “clean girl” aesthetic that dominated 2022. We’re going full goth this year, baby. Rodarte leaned into the trend with graphic liner and black lipstick. “We’re doing gothic fairies… more gothic than fairy,” Nars makeup lead James Kaliardos told Who What Wear. “For this show, we really wanted to do strong and bold makeup, linear eyeliner eyes with a dark black lip or a blue lip.”
While Rodarte may have been the most overt example of gothic glamour, Adeam and Sandy Liang also leaned into the trend with deep, blood-toned lips. In the case of Adeam, shaggy hair and face jewelery also proved to be centerpieces of the looks.
After years of many people categorizing French manicures as tacky, they’re now ubiquitous among the fashion set. This season, French tips are getting a face-lift: They’re bolder, more playful, and dare we say better than they’ve ever been before?
From her mosaic French nails at PatBo to gold tips at LoveShackFancy, Kiss brand ambassador Gina Edwards declares that the French is here to stay. “French is still on fire,” she said. “Everyone didn’t want to go near it, and now, it’s so explosive.”
At Proenza Schouler, Jin Soon Choi opted for a different take on French with a matte black gradient tip. “This collection is about portraits of women,” Choi told Who What Wear. “We decided to do a black ombré.” This nail perfectly showcased the modern femininity portrayed in the clothing.
Silver, gold, rose gold—metallics are in. From entire faces painted with heavy metals to strategic flecks of sparkle, expect to start treating makeup like jewelry for your face.
Shows such as Thom Browne and Prabal Gurung took a more overt approach to this trend with splashes of metal that stood out. “The classic look for everybody is this golden, celestial, beautiful [look],” said lead makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench. “The characters are actually asteroids.”
Other shows were more subdued, like the silvery moonlit highlights seen at Sandy Liang. “The look is inspired by sweet-but-psycho energy,” said international makeup artist Marcelo Gutierrez with Ilia Beauty. “They have this frosty, illuminated eye. It’s a sweet rock-and-roll look.”
When it came to lips this season, the theme was ROYGBV—any and every color in the rainbow was fair game. From two-toned lips at Kim Shui to blue lips and black lips at Rodarte, we saw just about every combination possible.
Even classic red got a makeover this season. At Alice+Olivia, the theme was Americana, but Elyse Reneau, the executive director of global beauty at Too Faced, took it to the next level. “I was thinking Marilyn Monroe, that true red lip, the bombshell lip,” she said. The result? What she coins “cherry syrup lips,” a hyper-glossy red that she says looks like “Dorothy’s slippers.”
TikTok’s favorite hairstyle isn’t going anywhere. Slicked-back buns are still the name of the game, with the sleek styles being by far the most pervasive hairstyle on the runways this season. This season’s ballet buns are sleek and neat, with shining examples seen at PatBo, Christian Siriano, and Jason Wu.
At Christian Siriano, classic buns got a floral twist. “We were inspired by the handcrafted floral accents found throughout the collection to echo this in the hair by creating a rose-like twist, with a ‘stem’ of hair weaving down the crown of the head, meeting the rose-like bun in the back,” says Lacy Redway, Unilever stylist and celebrity hair artist for Tresemmé.
At Jason Wu, Jimmy Paul, hairstylist and Olaplex ambassador, payed homage to the ’90s with sleek, side-parted buns. These buns held the perfect tension between masculine and feminine, seamlessly complementing the collection.
Braids are nothing new, but this season, we saw them reimagined. From floor-grazing plaits at Head of State to more sculptural iterations at Ulla Johnson and Tia Adeola, braids are entering their whimsical era.
At Head of State, Oribe principal artist of global design Kien Hoang created braids that mirrored the collection’s intention to convey designer Taofeek Abijako’s father’s immigration journey from Lagos, Nigeria. Hoang opted for sculptural braids with references to Lagos to create a throughline.
Head of State wasn’t the only show that drew hair inspiration from a specific place or moment in time—Tia Adeola did the same. “This season, we’re taking inspiration from the iconic ’90s Atlanta style, adding extra length and flair to our models’ tresses with long extensions and bold gel-sculpted curls,” says Mike Martinez of Cutler Salon with Bread Beauty. “The models selected perfectly embody this look, and we’re thrilled to pay homage to the Black film BAPS style while incorporating our own unique twists.”
Fashion week, more than any other week of the year—apart from, well, the other fashion week six months later—is the time when inspiration is at its most viscous. After seven days of nonstop runway shows, presentations, and previews, it’s almost impossible for outfit ideas and styling methods not to pour out of you—and that’s before you even take into account street style. There’s only one problem: You can’t actually buy what’s on the runways for at least six months, more if you’re waiting for sale prices.
Well, like most things in life, this is one issue that can be easily solved with a trip to Nordstrom. Do you know those people who perpetually live in heels? Well, I’m one of them. For as long as I can remember, I have been wearing heels in all their forms—ankle strap heels, Mary Jane pumps, platform sandals, you get the gist. But the longer I’ve lived in New York City, the more I’ve been open to experimenting with flats partially out of pure necessity. And while I can’t imagine I’ll always have a flair for the dramatics, there are so many great shoe trends (think loafers or vintage-inspired sneakers) that are worth test-driving. But I must confess that the one trend speaking to my soul the most is ballet flats. From Miu Miu’s polished satin iterations to The Row’s square-toe Mary Jane styles, S/S 22 and F/W 22 runways proved ballet flats are back and better than ever.
This makes adopting the shoe trend all the more alluring. But if you’re like me and not sure how to function in flats, you’ll want to keep reading, as I’ve done some digging to see how the fashion set is already wearing this trend. Whether you’re a flat-shoe fanatic or need some convincing that this shoe style is for you, these 16 ballet-flat outfit ideas are bound to impress.
Luckily, hair accessories are making a major comeback on and off the runways. Sunnie Brook, a celeb hairstylist that has worked with clients including Elizabeth Moss, Ashley Park, and Rita Ora, gave me the scoop on which ones are trending. “We are seeing luxury brands expand into the hair accessory category,” Brook begins. “Hair accessories are a quick and cool way to individualize any simple hairstyle and take it to the next level.”
According to Brook, black leather headbands, plaid fabric headbands, jeweled headbands, oversize bows, and Y2K stretch combs are all hair accessories to look out for. “We are going to see claw clips slowing fading out [in addition to] butterfly clips, metal barrettes clips, skinny headbands, rhinestone word,” she says. For the second season running, Tory Burch’s New York Fashion Week show has been one of if not *the* most talked-about of all. Burch’s S/S 23 collection shocked attendees who thought they knew the Tory Burch look, with its unique color and fabric pairings, unexpected styling, and hyper-elevated overall aesthetic. For F/W 23, the buzz around NYFW was all about whether or not her next offering would live up to the hype created six months prior. And now that we’ve all had time to ruminate on all 36 looks, the results are in. She not only succeeded in meeting our high expectations; she exceeded them.
Though I could write an entire dissertation about the strength of Burch’s fall collection, I’ve decided to instead keep things short and sweet by zeroing in on one item included in almost every look that had my fellow editors and I heading straight for the Nordstrom app to get in on the trend. If you don’t already know, I’m talking about fishnet tights, which Burch styled with flats, heels, and boots throughout the show. Once considered anti-chic in fashion circles, the holy hosiery is officially back in our good graces. And after scrolling through Nordstrom, I found the perfect $15 pair to welcome fishnets back into my wardrobe.

Fashion can sometimes feel reductive and repetitive, or at least that’s the perspective one can come to hold after years of following the industry. It can be easy to fall into a sartorial inspiration dry spell when the trends begin to feel repetitive, the production cycle is far too fast to keep up with, and the brands feel inauthentic to their identity. All of this is to say that when you stumble upon something that feels new, it’s like a reawakening of one’s entire perspective.
And that’s very much the case, for me at least, when it comes to Copenhagen fashion week. While it’s a privilege to attend and report on shows in general, something about being able to travel with CIFF to attend the fall/winter 2023 shows in this Danish capital was something else entirely. It opened up the world to me, quite literally. With that opening, I discovered new brands, spotted street style trends, and experienced firsthand why Copenhagen has become the world’s coolest fashion capital.
That newly minted status very much has to do with the fact that some of the buzziest brands in the industry are coming from this Danish capital. But it also relates to the Scandi set’s renewed approach to clothing. From choosing to produce in a more sustainable way to creating trend-forward pieces that can transcend time to staying true to their brand’s aesthetic, this community has changed the way, we look at fashion. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Ahead, I’ve highlighted ten major trends from CPHFW’s F/W 23 collections. If these can’t break you out of a clothing-related rut, nothing will.
Throughout time, there have been debates about the importance of fashion. Some find it ripe with frivolity. Others see it as a pivotal part of the culture woven into society’s fabric. While my own beliefs fall into the latter, I can sometimes understand why others may consider the matter of sartorial choices less than serious. There are, after all, so many new trends that can feel “unnecessary” at a time when so much is happening in the world that requires our attention. And while I’m an ardent believer in the importance of staying informed, I have to admit that one trend is top of mind for me: statement hats.
Of course, hats have been around for centuries, and every few seasons, we see a specific style surge in popularity again. Nevertheless, as designers released their spring 2023 collections, it became evidently clear that this trend was demanding our attention. Across the board, over-the-top and often oversize hats that some might even describe as “frivolous” were spotted at various fashion houses. It was, in a way, the greatest indication of the times—with so many things in the world fighting to be noticed, of course, the most attention-seeking accessory trend would emerge.
So to chronicle that emergence, I’ve done a deep dive through recent runway collections and Instagram imagery to show how statement hats managed to catch our awareness again. Plus, I’ve identified the six hat styles that will be big this spring. Prepare to embrace your inner drama queen because these hats will demand them to heed.
The looks that make it onto the runways of New York, London, Milan, and Paris are rarely for the faint of heart. That’s part of their appeal—not everyone is prepared to walk around their respective cities, go to work, or hang out with friends in the sort of extraordinary ensembles that designers put together every season. Instead, they’re meant to be a jumping-off point that buyers and editors can sell pieces of to customers and/or readers. But what happens when you test that theory and actually try to wear exact runway looks out in the real world?
That’s what I set forth to find out throughout the month of January. Despite it being winter in New York City, I took five outrageous spring runway looks—from the tights-as-pants Bottega Veneta outfit that Kendall Jenner made famous to those layered T-shirt combos at Miu Miu—for a spin, wearing them at all of the aforementioned locations and more, including Who What Wear’s Bryant Park office, the subway, and more.

As much as I cherish every pair of boots in my vast shoe collection, as a fashion editor and a self-proclaimed footwear expert, nothing brings me more joy than the arrival of a new trend set. Almost never will I permanently get rid of any pair, not even when my 300-square-foot apartment transitions from a home into a glorified storage unit. I will, however, store the more outdated styles away in the back of my closet (or an actual storage unit) to make room for those ones that warrant the spotlight right now.
The year has barely started, yet 2023 has already seen a significant number of boot trends reach must-buy status. From the Miu Miu buckle boots that spurred (pun intended) a million lookalikes to ’90s-era stiletto sock boots, every boot trend to come out of 2023 has been better than the last. Ahead, see and shop the seven that are making it to the big time this year and the seven that we’ll be politely declining (aka storing away for later use) during their reign.
Her favorite mermaidcore look that she created for a client was a mix of Euphoria glam and aquatic inspiration. “There are so many ways to draw inspiration to create a mermaidcore look,” says Braha. “My take would be open, fluffy brows, a wash of lavenders or sheer aqua blue across the lids, or a pop of color in the inner corner of the eyes. Glossy, fresh skin and lips complement this look well, too.” While mermaidcore may appear overwhelming to create at home, there are a few go-to products Braha suggests using Makeup by Mario’s Master Crystal Reflector in Quartz, Gucci’s Luminous Face and Lip Gloss, and Natasha Denona’s Mini Pastel Eyeshadow Palette.
“Quartz can be used on lids over top the pastel shadows, or used alone on lids or in inner corners. Use Gucci’s face balm under makeup on cheekbones for a wearable dewy effect,” Braha begins. “Natasha Denona’s mini pastel palette has the perfect mermaid vibe and can be worn individually or paired together for dimension and depth on eyes.” She also proposes adding extra details like delicate jewels, stones, or pearls sporadically near the eyes for an ultra-chic approach to the trend.
Ready to dive into the next batch of looks that are about to define the coming year? While there are a number of broader trends happening, I’m actually pinpointing a number of specific looks from the spring/summer 2023 runways that I think are the ultimate source of cool style this year.
You see, each season we look to the runways to determine the overarching trends but if you really think about it, we can trace the defining elements of each back to a handful of specific looks, whether it was an article of clothing, a novel styling trick, color combination, or an overall mood that was evoked.
If you want to know what the fashion set will be adopting, recreating, and iterating on in no time, I suggest you start with these eight runway moments. Consider this your crash course in spring 2023 fashion. When we first saw them during fashion month last fall, they were the images that blew up group chats and social media feeds and now that many of these pieces are hitting the market, I can state with conviction that these looks will set the tone—and in a few cases, they already have. Welcome to I Tried It Month, where we’ll be publishing a new fashion, beauty, or wellness article every day that features a first-person account of shaking up an old habit, pushing beyond a comfort zone, or simply trying something new. There’s no doubting the fact that oversize, menswear-inspired fashion is in right now. For proof, just look at every daytime look worn by Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber, or any recent runway show for The Row, Peter Do, or even Miu Miu (its S/S 22 collection was more than just covetable micro minis and belly tops). But when I tasked myself with testing out this trend a few weeks ago, I knew I had to go all in. In other words, rather than styling womenswear that only looked like menswear, I figured it’d be more of a challenge to go straight to the source: the actual men’s department.
And a challenge it was. Despite the fact that I’ve made a career out of shopping for womenswear, adapting to the section across the way took more trial and error than I’d originally thought. For starters, men’s sizes are entirely different from women’s, meaning that I had to measure and recalculate all of mine accordingly. In addition to that, almost everything is longer, lower, and broader, meaning that my usual styling hacks would have to likewise adjust. That being said, once I got the hang of it, putting together outfits using pieces that I’ve long ignored began to give me a fresh perspective—and lots of inspiration.
Arguably the biggest lesson I learned from introducing men’s clothing into my wardrobe was the importance of proportions. For me, most of the pieces I tested out were on the baggier side, with pants, especially, sitting lower on my hips and being wider and slouchier in the legs. To counteract that, I tested out pairings that included cropped and fitted tops and jackets that offset the oversize nature of the look’s bottom half.
I also wanted to create balanced ensembles that weren’t obviously pulled from the men’s department, but instead, felt in sync with the rest of my wardrobe. In turn, I spent a lot of time switching in and out flirtier pieces like corsets, heels, crop tops, and low-rise fitted trousers until I found combinations that clicked.

As someone’s who has spent much of their adult life trying to find the perfect pair of jeans (fitted in the waist without a gap, loose in the legs, and just long enough to reach the foot of my boots without flopping over them), it felt pretty unnatural to shop for a pair that I know wasn’t designed to correctly fit my body. That being said, once I came to terms with the fact that men’s denim would sit more around my hips than my waist and not hug my body the way a women’s pair would, the baggier style started to grow on me. I ended up liking them so much that I bought multiple pairs of men’s jeans and have been wearing them constantly. What can I say? It’s nice not to be confined to denim that you have to lay on your bed to zipper shut.

When I’m testing out a men’s piece, especially a jacket or coat, I like to size down one or two sizes.
A perfect example of a women’s shoe that gives off a menswear vibe.
I love the idea of going a bit against the typical winter-fashion grain, which is how this look—including lots of white after Labor Day—came to be. Since my trousers and turtleneck were both pretty fitted, this felt like the perfect occasion to go bigger with the coat and add a masculine shoe. Therefore, I opted for my favorite oversize peacoat from Nanushka’s men’s section and a pair of men’s suede loafers from Grenson.

If testing out menswear taught me one thing, it’s that low-rise pants aren’t as bad as everyone thinks.

I’ve spotted this Banana Republic flight jacket on at least a dozen fashion industry guys, from stylist Justin Boone to publicist Lindsey Solomon, but rarely any women, so I wanted to test it out myself. I paired the ultra-cozy, shearling coat with a pair of ACNE Studios trousers that I bought off my boyfriend (he’d had them tailored too small so they actually fit me pretty well). The two-tone heels perfectly pulled the look together.
I’ve been seeing this flight jacket in various forms all over Instagram and TikTok lately.

Similar to the aforementioned ACNE Studios khakis, I first got the idea to buy vintage men’s army pants after I stole a pair from my boyfriend and wore them to New York Fashion Week in September. I loved them so much that I began researching secondhand styles and sizes, eventually settling on this super baggy pair. Once it’s warm out, I plan to solely wear them with bra and bikini tops, but for now, I’m loving them with this cropped Ganni bomber and my go-to Adidas Sambas (also from the men’s section).
While plenty of trends emerged from the September runways for the upcoming year, there is a selection of micro-trends that are less overarching than the major trends. But don’t sleep on them. These slightly less obvious trends are almost like an insider secret. You’ll still see them carried through to retailers, celebrity looks, and influencers, but to anticipate them takes a little more research. You can leave that part to me!
I’ve nailed down seven key micro-trends from the S/S 23 season that are guaranteed to be prevalent this year. Some of these include statement textures like ruching, fringe, and paillettes, while others are accessory-focused like utilitarian bags and kitten-heel slingbacks. Although these trends began on the runways, they are also available at some of your favorite retailers such as Mango and H&M.

I personally lived through the 2010s fashion scene, and there were some things that defined it that stood out both then and now. One thing that is undeniable is that it was a moment of “indie sleaze,” when leather leggings, smudged eyeliner, and indie rock permeated fashion. Interestingly, Celine’s recent runway show at the Wiltern in Los Angeles has reintroduced all of the above (and more) back onto the fashion scene for the coming year. This is just one moment where all signs pointed to the resurgence of 2010s style.

Reflecting on the spring/summer 2023 runways, Lauren Santo Domingo also called out the impact of style from the early 2010s and how it will impact fashion in 2023. “For day-to-day life, I’ll be taking cues from the ‘model off duty’ trend,” Santo Domingo tells Who What Wear. “It’s really about channeling that effortless, easy cool that harkens back to the original days of mass street style in the early ’10s when photographers would lens models making their way between shows in their own casual attire—but with hair and makeup from the show.” While many fashion conversations in the last year have centered around the comeback of Y2K fashion, it turns out the 2010s will be the throwback fashion to have your eye on in 2023.
