    Thanks to the spring/summer 2024 shows that took place back in September, we’re pretty well aware of the trends that will come to define next year’s fashion landscape. In the apparel space, red’s set to dominate, with various shades imprinting on many of the most talked-about collections, as is heavy satin and more sophisticated takes on transparency.     Anyone who’s visited Hailey Bieber’s Instagram feed during Halloween knows that the model and entrepreneur loves a good holiday, especially when it means dressing to a theme. And now that we’ve entered into December territory, it appears that her outfits have switched over to another holiday. “Christmas glitter,” she captioned an IG slideshow on Sunday, showcasing one of the chicest festive looks of the year thus far. 

    To celebrate the holiday season’s arrival, Bieber chose a long-sleeved minidress made of bone-colored satin from Khaite, which was paired with matching sparkly tights, a Prada top-handle bag, Balenciaga pumps, and a black velvet hair bow from Emi Jay. But while her accessories certainly finished off the look, her dress was no doubt the star of the show, especially given how on-trend satin is at the moment. After a buzzy showing on the spring/summer 2024 runways at Tory Burch, Altuzarra, Carven, Louis Vuitton, and more, the luxurious material was destined to become a major deal in the year ahead. Now that Bieber’s gone and stamped it with a Rhode Raspberry Jelly Peptide Lip Tinted kiss, any last doubts there were about the trend’s popularity in 2024 were squashed for good.

    I have an obsessive personality, which can, like most things, be a good thing or a bad thing. It’s a good thing when it comes to cleaning, editing, or washing my face at night no matter how late it is. It’s a bad thing, though, when I find something that I desperately want that I simply cannot afford.     Here’s a perfect example: Last February, Khaite held a runway show in SoHo, where the brand debuted a high-neck halter dress in a fitted, ribbed fabric that came to the model’s lower shins. It was perfectly sculpted, and the neckline epitomized elegance and refinement. I zeroed in on the dress, feasting over its every thread and waiting patiently until it became available. When it did, I immediately started saving. But with life comes expenses, and given the dress’s lofty price tag, I still haven’t quite been able to give it a home in my closet.

    If I haven’t clarified by now, let me drill down into my point one last time: no fashion trend exists within a vacuum. That’s true, even for the more “trivial” trends like the pants optional trend that took off this past year. Characterized by the usage of underpinnings like tights, hotpants, underwear, and stirrup leggings to create the visual illusion of… you guessed it, wearing no pants. While one might initially write off the “pants optional” trend as a frivolous movement championed by a few famous people (ahem, Rihanna and Hailey Baldwin Bieber), it’s more than that. Like all trends, this movement reflects what’s happening in the fashion world. 

    We first saw tights styled underneath hotpants with a sweater and pumps in Matthieu Blazy’s second collection for Bottega Venetta in S/S 23. Since then, variations of the no-pants look have been spotted everywhere—e.g., tailored separates were styled with matching hot pants layered over tights at Ferragamo and Helen Anthony’s F/W 23 collections. While at Puppets and Puppets, a model strutted down the runway wearing a tailored corset top with lace stirrup leggings featuring a built-in overlay feature to give the illusion of exposed underwear. And then, there was Miu Miu’s collection, in which actual briefs (some bedazzled) were layered over tights and paired with layered knitwear—which was the peak expression of the trend! Each iteration of this trend on the runways was not only reflective of all the exciting things happening in the industry, but changes in the wider world. 

    The adoption of the no-pants look speaks to the longer history of more skin-barring forms of dressing being adopted after events of mass destabilization and death—e.g., after the Spanish Flu in 1918, the roaring ’20s were filled with more “risqué” hemlines including the mini dress. With this in mind, it’s only natural we’d see some form of a new way to bare skin emerge as we’ve collectively grappled with massive upheavals in the past few years. And while some still might think that choosing not to wear pants isn’t a big deal, I’d be to differ. At the end of the day, even with the free will to choose what we put on our bodies, we can never make the choice to be separated from the influence clothing has on society. Fashion has always reflected the era in which it exists—acting as a guide to who is deemed important, what is happening in the world, and what everyone is wearing. It will continue to do so, even if you choose to go pantless or not post-2023.

    Whether you’re ready for their return or dreading it with every fiber of your being, oversize sunglasses are on their way to a monumental comeback, with the brands on everyone’s lips right now, from Saint Laurent and Khaite to Phoebe Philo and Tom Ford, putting aside their love for microscopic eyewear in favor of styles of the larger, more shield-like variety.     When Lyst published their Q3 report on the top luxury brands of 2023, it was none other than Miu Miu who knocked Loewe off its pedestal to claim the number-one slot. It’s not hard to see why.     Everywhere we look, the ’80s are having a renaissance. From bold maximalist earrings and chunky bangles to nipped-waist blazers and structured tweed jackets, it’s hard to outrun the decade’s excess aesthetic right now. And while some items have been more readily accepted by the masses, others are still considered shocking news in 2023.

    Once such pot-stirring style is bubble hems, and I’m sorry to say it, but they too are about to make a major comeback. We saw the first inklings of their return in the 2023 collections with several bubble-hem skirts and dresses from Khaite and Prada, but for spring 2024, designers went full-force on the voluminous silhouettes, so consider this your official warning: No matter your personal feelings on them, you’re going to be seeing a lot more of the balloon-like shapes at the turn of the year.

    I don’t blame you if you associate the floofy shapes with an awkward middle-school dance or the wardrobe in 13 Going on 30, but I can assure you that the styles coming down the pipeline are much more sophisticated than they are retro. At Schiaparelli and Altuzarra, two-piece skirt sets were given the puffed-up treatment for maximum drama, but at Bally and Bottega Veneta, bubble hems came in the form of softer draping on dresses and skirts. Personally, I love the look of a bubble hem on a minidress with tights and heels for a holiday ensemble, but regardless, I’m sharing all the runway and influencer imagery of the trend so you can see for yourself.

    Just as the bright-red color trend is reaching its peak, designers are already conspiring on its successor. Don’t get me wrong—I don’t see the red trend going anywhere anytime soon. I’ve personally invested in it myself, but this past fashion month, designers posed a united front on a new It color that feels like a fresh evolution of the red theme that we’re seeing play out on the street style scene. Meet the shade we’re calling black cherry, a deep red that ranges from burgundy to oxblood and is just oozing with an aura of wealth, status, and power.

    We spotted the new It color all across the spring/summer 2024 collections at brands such as Gucci, Tom Ford, and Hermès, the latter of which showed a runway positively drenched in burgundy. For Sabato De Sarno’s debut collection at Gucci, the creative director notably made Gucci Rosso a color central to both the runway looks and new branding for the fashion house. It was spotted on trams running through Milan, on Instagram posts, and on billboards. 

    Burgundy is a color that represents power and ambition, and we expect nothing less when wearing the hue next spring.

    There’s no arguing that there’s so much to be excited about when it comes to fall fashion (ahem, denim skirts and ballet flats). And while there’s an overwhelming amount of great trends that came off the fall/winter 2023 runways, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that the outerwear was where it was at. From leather coats to coats with built-in scarves, there was no shortage of noteworthy trends that are guaranteed to find their way into the fashion sphere this fall. But if I’m being honest, there’s only one style that stole my heart this season: fuzzy collared coats. 

    I know what you’re thinking: “Furry coats? Girl, how is that exciting?” I’ll admit that fur always makes a minor comeback every fall, but this season, we saw designers embrace all the fuzzy things in a fun way—from shoes to bags, nothing was off limits. Most notably, what made the coats feel fresh was that they focused on long-lapel collars with fur trim, shaggy sleeves, and mixed materials to create intricate details. Every iteration was about using fur trimmings to elevate the coat—see Gucci’s gray wool coat with an oversized fuzzy red lapel or Miu Miu’s corduroy coat adorned with contrasting brown shearling. 

    It’s not necessarily about dripping in faux fur, though. Instead, it’s about that surprising element where the fur doesn’t overpower the coat but makes it a powerful statement piece. This intricate balance makes this outerwear trend, in my mind, one of the best of the season. In other words, there are no longer any blockades in place to stop you from dipping your toe in the chic and sophisticated world of lace.     Ready for some fresh Nordstrom buys?     I don’t mean to talk myself up too much, but I will say this: It’s rare that a trend sneaks up on me. I spend hours every day combing through sartorial research of all kinds, be it on Instagram, runways from both the past and the present, movies, and more. Yet, I’ll be the first to admit that one particular trend that’s proving to be quite popular this fall lived right outside of my periphery for weeks, even months, before I was finally able to see it for what it was. Or rather, until our editor in chief, Kat Collings, gave it a name: Greek-statue dressing. Immediately upon hearing it, a full picture of what this trend looks like appeared in my head, complete with exact products that fit the bill, as well as runway looks and IG examples.

    The name is really quite self-explanatory, but generally, if an article of clothing is drapey, twisted, knotted, or sort of 3D in shape, it’s probably a good fit for the Greek-statue trend. Brands such as Christopher Esber, Jacquemus, Vivienne Westwood, and Paris Georgia have been working with these techniques for seasons now, as have other labels including Loewe, Toteme, Khaite, The Row, and Christopher John Rogers. Basically, if you type “Greek statues of women” into Google and the resulting images look similar to the dress, skirt, or top you’re referring to, you’ve successfully mastered the art of dressing like a Greek statue.

    The buzzword from the fall/winter 2023 collections was “wearability” as brands showcased clothes meant to be worn and lived in, and items as simple as tank tops and hoodies got the designer treatment. In large part, the pendulum swung even further in that direction during fashion month for the spring/summer 2024 season, as designers focused on clothes that reflect our modern lives and what women actually want to wear. This time around, the pieces felt a bit more grown up and a bit more elevated, albeit just as essential. Yes, designers are thinking about what will sell, but they are also considering what is truly worthy of a spot in our closets.

    We’re seeing this unfold in a few ways. First, designers are taking the current leading trends to a new place. The fiery red dominating for fall was replaced with a more accessible shade of oxblood. Sheer outfits veered away from the “naked” aesthetic and took a modest, approachable direction. We also saw this play out with looks that are built around where our real-life days take us and how we’re dressing for them. Traditional clothing shapes were tweaked with cool, modern updates, while big, overstuffed bags echo the realities of busy days.

    This doesn’t mean that directional trends for the adventurous dresser weren’t present, though. Hot pants were at the center of the co-ord sets that are all but guaranteed to take over for spring. Styling on the runways also reimagined how to get dressed with unexpected pairings—a study in inventive ways to wear all of the pieces we’ve collected over the years.
