GLENDALE — Glendale, known as RugbyTown USA, serves as the home of the professional rugby team, the American Raptors. The team, however, will not be coming home to Glendale next year.
The American Raptors played in the Super Rugby Americas and worked toward “improving the level of domestic talent in the United States” according to the team’s page.
The sight of rugby players at Infinity Park is common for Johnathan Solis.
“Oh, it’s big. I’ve never actually never seen rugby personally, you know, anywhere besides here. It’s when I first witnessed the games and the practice,” said Solis. “I got interested in it whenever I see these guys play and their commitment, how happy they are to be out here. So I know it’s big right here in Glendale.”

SANTIAGO DEL ESTERO, Argentina (AP) — Argentina changed three of its pack and could debut a tighthead prop against title-chasing South Africa in the Rugby Championship on Saturday.
The Pumas handed Australia its biggest defeat, 67-27, in Santa Fe two weeks ago and recorded its biggest win over a tier one team.
But the Springboks are the only unbeaten team and can clinch their first championship title since 2019 by not losing to Argentina in Santiago del Estero.
An Argentina upset win would set up a title decider between the teams in the last round next week in Nelspruit.
Pumas coach Felipe Contepomi has rotated in locks Pedro Rubiolo and Franco Molina for veterans Guido Petti and Tomas Lavanini, and made Joaquin Oviedo the starting No. 8 after a two-try performance off the bench, ahead of Juan Martin Gonzalez, who also bagged a try.
The backs were unchanged while the reserves were not.
The Pumas lost their two main backup props, Eduardo Bello, to a torn right ACL, and Mayco Vivas, who was unavailable. They have replaced them with uncapped tighthead Pedro Delgado, who is from Santiago del Estero, and Ignacio Calles, who has three previous caps. Calles was playing for Pau in France when the Pumas were crushing the Wallabies.
If they both get on, they will likely oppose Springboks Vincent Koch (56 caps) and Gerhard Steenekamp (six).
Delgado, aged 27, helped Dogos XV win the Super Rugby Americas in June. He was picked ahead of Racing 92’s Lucio Sordoni.
Contepomi called Delgado “a pleasant surprise” in that he joined the squad on short notice last week and adapted quickly. “It is a great challenge for him,” the coach added. Captain and hooker Julian Montoya said, “We have a lot of confidence that he’ll have a great game.”
The reserves returned to a traditional 5-3 split, from 6-2, to accommodate a third back, center-wing Matias Moroni, who missed both Australia tests due to a muscle tear.
Argentina: Juan Cruz Mallia, Bautista Delguy, Lucio Cinti, Santiago Chocobares, Mateo Carreras, Tomas Albornoz, Gonzalo Bertranou; Joaquin Oviedo, Marcos Kremer, Pablo Matera, Joel Sclavi, Julian Montoya (captain), Thomas Gallo. Reserves: Ignacio Ruiz, Ignacio Calles, Pedro Delgado, Guido Petti, Juan Martin Gonzalez, Gonzalo Garcia, Santiago Carreras, Matias Moroni.

LA PLATA, Argentina (AP) — Agustin Creevy is set to end a 19-year international career after Argentina plays Australia in the Rugby Championship in his La Plata hometown this weekend.
Creevy informed the Pumas of his plans this week, and the 39-year-old hooker was included in the reserves for Saturday’s test.
Since his test debut in 2005 against Japan on the wing, Creevy has set Argentina records for the most tests (109), the most as captain (51) and the most appearances in the Rugby World Cup (22). He led the team to the 2015 World Cup semifinals.
“I am leaving after having given it my all,” he told ESPN. “I have played to the utmost, and it is time to step aside because it is best for the team, and, like I always say, the team comes first.
“I have many mixed feelings. Of sadness, of joy and, above all, of immense pride for having worn this shirt for a long time. All the decisions and actions I made, everything I went through was to wear the Los Pumas shirt that I love so much.”
The Wallabies later announced a starting lineup with yet another skipper. Harry Wilson will lead the side against Argentina — Australia’s eighth captain in 15 tests and the fourth under Joe Schmidt in five matches this season.
Schmidt has also used Liam Wright and veteran props James Slipper and Allan Ala’alato a as leaders since replacing Eddie Jones as head coach.
It allows Schmidt to start his most damaging props, Taniela Tupou and Angus Bell, with Ala’alatoa providing leadership from the bench.
No. 8 Wilson has played 15 tests and faces a difficult leadership assignment against a Pumas team that upset the All Blacks in Wellington in the first round of the tournament.
Argentina coach Felipe Contepomi said Creevy’s decision didn’t play any part in giving him a sendoff in his hometown.
“This is the national team, the best players play. What we consider to be the best 23 for each match,” Contepomi said. “It is a blessing for him to have been able to make the decision to retire and not to be retired by rugby. We support him in his decision. He will bear his emotions inside. This day was going to come at some point, it was not going to last forever.”
Creevy wasn’t expected to play test rugby again after his fourth World Cup last November in France, where the Pumas reached another semifinal. But an injury to Julian Montoya prompted Contepomi to recall Creevy for the tests in New Zealand. He came off the bench and scored the go-ahead try against the All Blacks in a stunning 38-30 win in Wellington three weeks ago.
Montoya, who succeeded Creevy as the starting hooker and captain, praised his former mentor.
“I debuted when he was captain. We have been together for 11 years, competing for a position,” Montoya said. “We have a very nice relationship and I thanked him for how he sponsored me in my beginnings. I couldn’t have chosen anyone better for that and I am grateful.”
The Pumas made three changes after losing the second match to the All Blacks 42-10 in Auckland two weeks ago.
Joel Sclavi replaced tighthead Lucio Sordoni, who has gone to France to complete his transfer to Racing 92, Franco Molina was back in the second row and bumped Marcos Kremer to his natural position on the flank, and Santiago Cordero was on the wing for the injured Matias Moroni.
On a bench split 6-2, forwards Guido Petti and Santiago Grondona could make their first test appearances this year.
Argentina: Juan Cruz Mallia, Santiago Cordero, Lucio Cinti, Santiago Chocobares, Mateo Carreras, Santiago Carreras, Gonzalo Bertranou; Juan Martin Gonzalez, Marcos Kremer, Pablo Matera, Pedro Rubiolo, Franco Molina, Joel Sclavi, Julian Montoya (captain), Thomas Gallo. Reserves: Agustin Creevy, Mayco Vivas, Eduardo Bello, Guido Petti, Tomas Lavanini, Santiago Grondona, Lautaro Bazan Velez, Tomas Albornoz.
Australia: Tom Wright, Andrew Kellaway, Len Ikitau, Hamish Stewart, Marika Koroibete, Noah Lolesio, Jake Gordon; Harry Wilson (captain), Carlo Tizzano, Rob Valetini, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Nick Frost, Taniela Tupou, Matt Faessler, Angus Bell. Reserves: Josh Nasser, Isaac Kailea, Allan Alaalatoa, Jeremy Williams, Langi Gleeson, Tate McDermott, Ben Donaldson, Max Jorgensen

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — Rugby sevens star Ilona Maher has been a huge hit on social media as the U.S. women’s team has progressed to the semifinals at the Paris Olympics.
She’s been busy making funny TikTok and Instagram reels and also empowering posts about women and sports. She’s also producing some big hits on opponents at Stade de France as a regular starter for the U.S. women’s rugby sevens team.
Her video recruiting recently retired NFL center Jason Kelce as a super fan for the No. 4-ranked U.S. team after their first two games on Monday magnified the attention.
The 27-year-old Maher isn’t new to this. Her hilarious takes on village life in the pandemic-era Tokyo Olympics three years ago made her one of the breakout stars of those Games.
Spectators were barred from Olympic venues in Tokyo, and there’s always strict rules anyway about who is allowed into the athletes’ village. Those weren’t barriers for Maher. With fans locked out under harsh social-distancing rules, her social media followers got a humorous inside look at the Games — starting with the bedding.
Maher and her rugby sevens teammates tested out the cardboard beds in a TikTok video that gained millions of views, showing them performing CPR on the bed, doing yoga and even throwing a mock tantrum.
Another Olympic village, more cardboard beds.
“Hey everyone, we’re back testing out the cardboard beds. My bed is going to break, yes, but I’m going to do it anyway,” Maher says by way of introduction to the video that showed her and some of her teammates wrestling on the beds, doing gymnastics moves and Irish jigs, among other things. Nothing to lose sleep over.
Her U.S. teammates, including Nicole Heavirland, Naya Tapper and Sammy Sullivan, often make it into Maher’s posts. Then there’s the people she runs across at the Olympics — like Snoop Dogg (“He’s an insanely cool dude”) and U.S. tennis star Coco Gauff (the topic turned to pickleball). To the guy who asked if she was an Olympian and then wrongly guessed which sport: “All 5’10” of me, 200 pounds — a gymnast. Wrong!”
Maher uses a #beastbeautybrains hashtag with the aim of spreading body image positivity and bringing more attention to rugby and women’s sports in general.
From the U.S.-branded bikini, to the rugby uniform to the stylish formal Ralph Lauren clothes, Maher wears them all with pride and seemingly equal comfort in a vast range of photos and reels of her Olympic wardrobe.
She’s strong — her stiff-arm shoving away attempted tackles against Japan and France were plenty evidence of that.
She’s fast — running almost the length of the field to score against Japan showed that.
She’s smart — as well as gaining a nursing degree, following in the footsteps of her mom, she worked to graduate from rugby enthusiast to professional athlete. Next step is to make its pay better.
She summed it up in a quick post to her million-plus Instagram followers before the opening ceremony on Friday.
“As the Olympics officially start, I want you all to take a look at all the different body types on display. All body types matter. All body types are worthy from the smallest gymnast to the tallest volleyball player, from a rugby player to a shot-putter and a sprinter. All bodies are beautiful and can do amazing things. So truly see yourself in these athletes and know you can do it, too.”
The U.S. advanced to a semifinal match against defending champion New Zealand with a 17-7 quarterfinal win over Britain, avenging a loss to the British at the same stage in Tokyo three years ago.
Maher played an instrumental role in the first try, using her big fend to brush off one tackler, draw in a defender and then release Tapper into the clear on the left wing to score.
She made another barging, long-range run just before halftime to ensure the U.S. kept momentum.
Sammy Sullivan and Kristi Kirshe scored second-half tries to seal the win.

Art Smith takes a quick look around Time Out Market Chicago and softly asks: “Do you know what chefs do after they’re 60?”
Smith, the celebrity chef who worked with Oprah Winfrey and has served dignitaries, like President Biden, didn’t expect an answer. Smith posed the question to justify his new rapport with the Chicago Hounds, a professional rugby team founded in 2022 that plays home matches at SeatGeek Stadium in suburban Bridgeview. In February, Smith and the Hounds announced a collaboration in which Smith’s new brand, Sporty Bird, began selling chicken sandwiches and more at the stadium. Over the weekend, Smith also unveiled a Sporty Bird-branded food stall at Time Out Market, the food hall run by the media company.
Beyond his association with Oprah, Smith is known for restaurants like Table Fifty-Two in Gold Coast, a hit mostly known for its fried chicken. Smith is proud of the restaurant (which was rebranded as Blue Door Kitchen & Garden in 2016) and its alums: “Joe is just killing it here,” Smith says of Joe Flamm, the chef and co-owner of Rose Mary, right down the street from Time Out Market.
Last year, Smith opened Reunion at Navy Pier and he maintains a residence in Hyde Park. But he still travels. He talked about an upcoming trip to India and meeting esteemed chef Francis Mallmann earlier this year during a visit to an island in Patagonia. Even though he joked about his age, Smith’s star continues to shine, passing through open doors closed to most food hall tenants. Most food halls brand themselves as incubators, taking chances on relatively unproven talent. Smith is the opposite.
Still, the venture with the Hounds is a risk. He touts himself as the only professional chef who owns a professional sports team in America. It’s a claim that’s hard to verify. For example, is a burger cook who works at an Applebee’s and has shares in the publicly-owned Green Bay Packers, considered an owner of a pro team?
Smith wants to bring energy to Time Out (“I want to throw a party,” he says) and sees potential — even as the food hall goes through changes. Smith praised chef Jorge Kaum, the chef behind Gutenburg, a food hall burger stall. Kaum is also a chocolatier and made chocolate-shaped rugby balls in honor of Smith’s opening.
Avli is set to leave the market at the end of the month — they’re going to open a stand-alone location in the area. Evette’s left earlier this year. Of the original lineup from 2019, only chef Bill Kim (Urbanbelly) remains. A few of the restaurants had problems with management and didn’t like the terms of their contracts. Food halls have struggled during the pandemic. Two closed in the West Loop/Fulton Market — Politan Row and Fulton Galley. In March, Time Out brought in a new general manager, Steve Pelissero, to bring in some stability.
Sporty Bird features chicken (“I do know how to cook more than chicken,” Smith says). The spicy nuggets have heat, at least during an opening event last week. But there’s a worry that too much heat will alienate customers in the area.
Unexpectedly, the stall has a familiar face behind the counter. Carol Cheung, the chef and the owner behind Hyde Park’s Jade Court, an acclaimed Cantonese restaurant and longtime member of the Eater Chicago 38, is managing operations. As Smith is a Hyder Parker, he befriended Cheung and wants to find a way to revive Jade Court, which struggled at the University of Chicago’s Harper Court development. Time Out does have spaces available.
What gave Smith the idea to partner with the hounds? Last year, soccer legend Lionel Messi launched a fried chicken sandwich in Miami with Hard Rock Cafe. Smith saw the sandwich become a viral sensation, yet he was hardly impressed by the sandwich: “I could do better,” Smith says.
Some vendors have fled, others say they’ve made money at the food hall. Kaum, who also has a stall in Miami, says things are improving in Chicago. Smith is hopeful that Sporty Bird, and perhaps a Jade Court revival, can take advantage. He’s reminded of something his friend Oprah once told him: “You don’t have to be first,” Smith recalls Winfrey saying. “But you do have to be better.”

CANBERRA, Australia — A legendary rugby player has cited the fear and anxiety that has come into his life among the reasons for urging the Australian government to fund support services and education about chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
Wally Lewis, dubbed “The King” when he played rugby league for Queensland state and Australia in the 1980s, made an appeal on behalf of the Concussion and CTE Coalition for millions of dollars in funding during a National Press Club address Tuesday.
The 64-year-old Lewis said he’s living with probable CTE, which he described as a type of dementia associated with repeated concussive and sub-concussive blows to the head.
Lewis, who worked for decades as a television sports anchor after retiring as a player in the early 1990s, relayed his own experience to get his message across.
“The fear is real. I don’t want anyone to have to live with the fear and anxiety that I live with every day, worried about what I’ve forgotten … the fear of what my future will look like,” Lewis said. “And living with the constant fear and anxiety that I’ll let people down – the people who all my life have been able to rely on me and looked to me for my strength and leadership.”
Lewis led Australia’s Kangaroos in 24 international matches, was among the original players to popularize the annual State-of-Origin series, and was included in Australia’s Rugby League Team of the Century in 2008.
The National Rugby League has honored him as a so-called “Immortal” of the game.
Yet his memories of it aren’t clear. He started playing rugby league as a young boy and also played rugby union at an elite level before embarking on a professional career in rugby league.
“It’s a journey marked by the twin shadows of fear and embarrassment, a journey through the fog of dementia and the erosion of my memory,” he said. “I once had the confidence in myself to succeed, lead a team to victory, captain my country, remember the strengths and weaknesses of opposition teams, organize myself each and every day and feel well and truly in control of my life.
“Now, much of that confidence has been taken away from me by the effects of probable CTE dementia.”
Lewis said better community awareness on concussion was needed and prevention programs, including a sharper focus on tackling techniques from young players through to professionals.
Awareness of CTE and concussion has grown since players in contact sports, including the in the United States and rugby union in Britain, launched concussion lawsuits.
The Rugby World Cup took place last year against the backdrop of a concussion lawsuit in Britain that had similarities to one settled by the NFL in 2013 at a likely cost of more than $1 billion.
CTE, a degenerative brain disease known to cause violent moods, depression, dementia and other cognitive difficulties, can only be diagnosed posthumously. It has been linked to repeated hits to the head endured by , rugby and hockey players, boxers and members of the military.
“As Wally Lewis I have influence – I have a platform – and I intend to use it at every opportunity to bring about change for all Australians like me who are impacted by CTE,” Lewis said, “and to do whatever I can to protect the brains of Australian children from CTE.”

This unique partnership goes beyond just delivering finger lickin’ good chicken but emerges as a show of support towards public transport in Auckland. Verdine White, veteran member of Earth, Wind & Fire, is making his first venture into sports ownership as a new minority owner in Old Glory DC, the Washington area’s professional rugby team.
Old Glory DC, the Washington area’s professional rugby team, will play its first home game of the season Saturday and the team has a new minority owner who just so happens to be a superstar.
Verdine White, veteran member of soul band Earth, Wind & Fire, is making his first venture into sports ownership.
“My good buddy forever, Paxton Baker, involved me in it, and we’ve been talking about it for quite some time. I told him I wanted to jump in with him. I’m a sports fanatic anyway,” White told WTOP.
Baker is a business executive and owns a stake in the Washington Nationals and Old Glory DC.
One of the reasons White was interested in investing in Old Glory DC is his affinity for the District.
“We’ve been coming to D.C. forever. D.C. is kind of like where Earth, Wind & Fire got launched,” said White. “You know, we really broke big in D.C. And it’s always been like a second home to us. … In the beginning of our career, we were going to move to D.C. because we were playing there so much.”
White is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a 2019 Kennedy Center honoree.
But why rugby?
“I thought it was sexy … because it was from overseas,” said White. “I thought that was really great. It’s now in a new generation, people are really getting into it … and I wanted to … be part of it.”
It was a thrill for the music superstar to recently be acknowledged as a sports entrepreneur by none other than basketball great Magic Johnson, who’s also a minority owner of the Washington Commanders.
“I did see Magic and he gave me a big hug. I thought that was the biggest compliment, that he noticed me outside of music. … I was elated,” said White.
White, a veteran of the concert stage, is eager to see the team succeed in its fifth season in Major League Rugby and said he is ready to grow in his first venture into sports ownership.
“I think (Old Glory DC is) a tough team … I can’t wait to sit in the stands … support the team and I’m learning as I go,” said White. “I’m always open for challenge. … Whenever you’re involved in anything, it’s going to be a challenge and that’s what I love about it.”
Old Glory DC, which reached the playoffs last year, hosts the Chicago Hounds Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds.

France fought back valiantly to steal the win
Sam Skinner’s late try was controversially ruled out by the TMO as Scotland suffered a 20-16 defeat by France at Murrayfield in the second round of the Six Nations.
Louis Bielle-Biarrey’s sensational individual effort after 70 minutes gave France the lead for the first time with just under 10 minutes remaining but Scotland regained territory and fought back to get Skinner over the line.
The decision was deliberated for a long time before it was ruled that there was not enough evidence to award the try, giving the visitors a narrow victory.

Ireland produced a magnificent display in Marseille as they registered a first Six Nations win in France since 2018
Ireland began life in the post-Johnny Sexton era in ideal fashion, as a terrific Six Nations performance saw them to a bonus-point 38-17 victory over France in Marseille.
Scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park, lock Tadhg Beirne, wing Calvin Nash, hooker Dan Sheehan and replacement hooker Ronan Kelleher scored tries at the Stade Velodrome against a French side who saw lock Paul Willemse shown a red card during the first half for two yellows – both high tackles.
Ireland fly-half Jack Crowley, 24, started nervously but grew in confidence and into the contest, kicking one penalty and five exquisite conversions, while also producing a gorgeous try assist for Beirne in a record points total and winning margin for Ireland in France.
Ireland – Tries: Gibson-Park (16), Beirne (30), Nash (46), Sheehan (62), Kelleher (78). Cons: Crowley (18, 31, 47, 63, 79). Pens: Crowley (7).
France – Tries: Penaud (40), Gabrillagues (53). Cons: Ramos (42, 53). Pens: Ramos (27).
Damian Penaud and lock Paul Gabrillagues scored France’s tries, who continued to fight hard and never appeared truly out of it – Ireland captain Peter O’Mahony was sin-binned in the second half with the gap seven points – but they ultimately had to swallow a home defeat.
Jack Crowley, Johnny Sexton’s Ireland replacement in the No 10 jersey, pulled the strings to victory in the Stade Velodrome
For many in the sport, France vs Ireland was the Rugby World Cup final that never was back in October’s Paris showpiece, and although the hosts carved out the first threatening attack, Ireland were far the quicker to settle into their groove.
Crowley edged Ireland into an early lead with a close-range penalty, and after Willemse collected his first yellow for a high hit to the head of Andrew Porter, the visitors notched the opening try.
Centre Bundee Aki did magnificently for it, charging forward and freeing his hands to offload for Gibson-Park to sprint in.
Ireland scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park scored the first try after great work from Bundee Aki
A huge try chance was spurned by Ireland after Beirne charged down Antoine Dupont’s replacement Maxime Lucu to win a turnover just after a France maul – Crowley and Aki playing narrow when a wide ball would have resulted in a certain try down the left.
Within moments, Crowley missed poorly off the tee for the chance to go 13-0, with Thomas Ramos then striking at the other end after a scrum penalty.
Perhaps illustrating a measure of his mentality, Crowley brushed off a tough few minutes to play Beirne in for Ireland’s second try via an exquisitely disguised short-ball.
Tadhg Beirne scored Ireland’s second try after being brilliantly played in by Crowley
Crowley then converted for 17-3, with Willemse – only recently back on – then shown his second yellow, which was upgraded to a straight red following a bunker review, after connecting with the head of Caelan Doris in Ireland’s first carry following the restart.
France lock forward Paul Willemse was red carded for committing two yellow card offences – a very rare occurrence
Back-to-back penalties at the ruck against Ireland invited France forward, however, and though Beirne stole a lineout, a costly scrum penalty against the head eventually resulted in Penaud diving over as French persistence in kicking to the corner was rewarded seconds before the break.
Damian Penaud hit back for France with a try seconds before half-time
After Ramos uncharacteristically dragged a penalty wide, Ireland scored through Nash after they sprung the play wide and Robbie Henshaw had stepped, accelerated and offloaded brilliantly for Doris to find the championship debutant.
Calvin Nash scored Ireland’s third try on the occasion of his Six Nations debut
Crowley produced a sensational conversion off the touchline for 24-10, but France were back within a score seven minutes later, after a long TMO review saw Gabrillagues awarded a try and O’Mahony sin-binned for a cynical act in attempting to deny him.
Ireland composed themselves to get back up the other end, though, and after the brave decision to kick to the corner instead of for points, Sheehan flew over the try-line from a maul for their fourth.
Dan Sheehan’s try wrapped up the bonus-point and put Ireland on firm course for victory
There remained time for one last try, and it was almost identical to Sheehan’s as Kelleher controlled possession at the back of a maul which romped over.
Fittingly, the boot of Crowley was the final scoring act via the extras.
Ireland head coach Andy Farrell to ITV Sport…
“Any victory here, on a Friday night to start the Six Nations off is always going to be a hard task but I think coming away with a bonus-point win is special.
“I was proud of the performance because we kept on playing for the full 80 minutes and we got what we deserved in the end.
“When you play against 14 men, the tendency is sometimes to shut up shop but we kept on playing.
“These are guys that have been in around the squad for the past couple of years so we had no doubt they are ready to play.
“Some of them, their form guarantees they are going to be in. But it is a 23-man game.”
Ireland captain O’Mahony to ITV Sport…
“It is hard to sum up. It was a serious Test match.
“I am very proud of the lads for the control of the game. We were cool, composed, might have been a bit frantic in the last 10 minutes down to 14, but we stayed to the plan the whole time.
“We didn’t get carried away with positive and negative moments and I thought it was a good start.
“I think a big chunk of the performance was the young fellas, Calvin Nash, Jack Crowley, big Joe [McCarthy]. Some big, big performances from guys getting an opportunity.”
