LONDON — LONDON (AP) — King Charles III attended church near the royal Balmoral estate in Scotland for prayers and reflection in remembrance of his mother Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday, the second anniversary of her death.

Charles, 75, and his wife Camilla have been spending the summer in the Scottish Highlands, where the late monarch died at 96 years old on September 8, 2022.

Charles and Camilla were seen arriving for the Sunday morning service at the tiny granite church of Crathie Kirk, the royal family’s place of worship when they stay in nearby Balmoral Castle. Charles’ great-great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, laid the foundation stone for the church, and Elizabeth was a regular attendee.

Charles ascended the throne two years ago Sunday when his mother died in her Platinum Jubilee year after reigning for a record seven decades.

His second year as sovereign was marked by two significant health blows — both Charles and his daughter-in-law Kate, the Princess of Wales, announced they were diagnosed with unspecified types of cancer earlier this year.

The monarch has gradually returned to public duties, undertaking dozens of visits, meetings and events. On Saturday Charles, dressed in a tartan kilt, and Camilla were seen laughing and in good spirits as they visited the Braemar Gathering Highland Games, an annual event featuring bagpiping, Highland dancing and traditional games including tug-of-war.

The Duchess of Sussex‘s unrivalled elegance has reigned supreme throughout her four-day tour of Colombia with Prince Harry

From silhouette-enhancing separates to tailored workwear and a breathtaking revival of the late Princess Diana’s precious jewels, Meghan has proven her penchant for effortless style as she and her husband work through a packed agenda.

As the couple kick-started their final day in South America, Meghan’s exquisite fashion sense stood out amongst the crowd as she sported a poised and elegant look, wearing a white button down vest with a floral midi skirt

While the vest added a touch of sophistication when she joined a panel of dignitaries for the “Afro Woman and Power” Forum, it was her skirt that truly provided some additional bling. She wore a Silvia Tcherassi Blair sequinned midi skirt, covered in beautifully ornate and colorful floral print atop a beige fabric.

The mother-of-two, who shares Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three, with Prince Harry, paired her stunning look with gold jewelry accents, including a few bracelets and matching earrings.

The former actress swept her raven hair into a chignon with some tresses flowing down to frame her face, highlighting her natural beauty with her go-to beauty combo of a dewy base, golden bronzer and smudged eyeliner look.

Meghan and Harry, who were invited to Colombia by personal invitation of vice president Francia Marquez after she was moved by their Netflix documentary, have been embracing the country’s culture across their four-day stopover.

They were also invited to draw a focus on their personal priorities, such as the impact of the digital world on young people, celebrating the military community and female empowerment.

  • Prince William and Princess Kate’s sentimental Kenyan log cabin is a far cry from Adelaide Cottage

Prince William and Princess Kate’s sentimental Kenyan log cabin is a far cry from Adelaide Cottage

    [ad_1]

The Prince and Princess of Wales are raising their children in the most idyllic setting – Adelaide Cottage on the leafy Windsor Home Park Estate.

However, Kate’s first taste of royal life came in 2010 following Prince William’s proposal. Kate née Middleton, now 42, was offered Princess Diana’s iconic blue sapphire and diamond engagement ring when Prince William got down on one knee and the couple retreated to a stunning mountainside lodge that couldn’t be further from their royal cottage home.

Vogue reported that the Prince spent time with his new fiancé, whom he met while studying at St Andrew’s University, at the Rutundu Log Cabin on the slopes of Mount Kenya. The property is set off the beaten track – a perfect spot for those yearning for serenity and privacy.

The cabin, which costs £130 per night, is described as “perfect for fishermen, walkers, families, adventurers, and those simply wanting to experience the tranquility of the mountain.”

The prince was not afraid of choosing a lodge without his usual royal comforts. The property is entirely self-catered and has no phone signal – you would have to walk for 25 minutes to have any chance of calling Buckingham Palace.

Having said that, the cabin, which is described as having an Alaskan-style interior, is perfectly cosy with an open log fire and verandah for soaking in the stunning natural views.

    A second Kenyan retreat

Though William is said to have flown Kate up the slopes of Mount Kenya to propose by the mountain’s glacial lakes, the Waleses enjoyed an equally romantic time at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

The 55,000-acre estate is a privately owned reserve home to 21 tents perfectly positioned for animal-watching.

Here guests can enjoy three-course meals and guided bush walks. Wake-up calls are far from being jolted from your slumber by a phone alarm. Guests at the Lewa reserve are treated to morning birdsong before breakfast and elephant spotting.

    The couple’s Adelaide Cottage lifestyle

Leafy Windsor couldn’t be further from their beautiful engagement spot. The family of five’s royal residence is a Grade II listed candy pink cottage which formerly featured a marble Graeco-Egyptian fireplace and a ceiling covered with gilded dolphins.

  • King Charles III applauds people who stood against racism during recent unrest in UK

King Charles III applauds people who stood against racism during recent unrest in UK

    [ad_1]

LONDON — King Charles III has applauded people who took to the streets of British towns and cities earlier this week to help blunt days of unrest fueled by far-right activists and misinformation about a stabbing attack that killed three girls.

Charles on Friday held telephone audiences with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and law enforcement officials during which he offered his “heartfelt thanks” to police and other emergency workers for their efforts to restore order and help those affected by the violence, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

“The king shared how he had been greatly encouraged by the many examples of community spirit that had countered the aggression and criminality from a few with the compassion and resilience of the many,” the palace said. “It remains his majesty’s hope that shared values of mutual respect and understanding will continue to strengthen and unite the nation.”

British police remain on alert for further violence after the nation was convulsed by rioting for more than a week as crowds spouting anti-immigrant and Islamophobic slogans attacked mosques, looted shops and clashed with police. The government described the violence as “far-right thuggery,” and mobilized 6,000 specially trained police officers to quell the unrest.

The disturbances have been fueled by right-wing activists using social media to spread misinformation about the July 29 knife attack in which three girls between the ages of 6 and 9 were killed during a Taylor Swift-themed dance event in Southport, a seaside town north of Liverpool.

Police detained a 17-year-old suspect. Rumors, later debunked, quickly circulated on social media that the suspect was an asylum-seeker, or a Muslim immigrant.

On Saturday, the family of one of the Southport victims, Bebe King, 6, thanked their community, friends and even strangers who had offered the family solace in their grief.

“The outpouring of love and support from our community and beyond has been a source of incredible comfort during this unimaginably difficult time,” they wrote. ”From the pink lights illuminating Sefton and Liverpool, to the pink bows, flowers, balloons, cards, and candles left in her memory, we have been overwhelmed by the kindness and compassion shown to our family.”

The unrest has largely dissipated since Wednesday night, when a wave of expected far-right demonstrations failed to materialize after thousands of peaceful protesters flocked to locations around the U.K. to show their support for immigrants and asylum-seekers.

Police had prepared for confrontations at more than 100 locations after right-wing groups circulated lists of potential targets on social media. While anti-racism groups planned counterprotests in response, in most places they reclaimed the streets with nothing to oppose.

Starmer has insisted the police will remain on high alert this weekend, which marks the beginning of the professional soccer season. Authorities have been studying whether there is a link between the rioters and groups of “football hooligans” known to incite trouble at soccer matches.

“My message to the police and all of those that are charged with responding to disorder is maintain that high alert,” Starmer said on Friday while visiting the special operations room of London’s Metropolitan Police Service.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council said some 741 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, including 304 who have been charged with criminal offenses.

Courts around the country have already begun hearing the cases of those charged in relation to the unrest, with some receiving sentences of three years in prison.

Starmer has said he is convinced that the “swift justice that has been dispensed in our courts” will discourage rioters from returning to the streets this weekend.

Princess Eugenie reminisces about ‘favourite memories’ with Princess Beatrice throwback

    [ad_1]

Princess Eugenie recalled one of her favourite memories from the London 2012 Olympics, as she paid tribute to the current crop of athletes at the Paris 2024 Games

The royal, 34, uploaded a series of throwback snaps showing her and sister, Princess Beatrice, cheering on Team GB at various events, including a very personal one.

“The Olympics is one of the best things in our world,” Eugenie wrote. “It’s such a special time watching superhuman athletes represent their countries, bringing people together and inspiring generations.

“Some of my most favourite memories from 2012 was being on the sidelines cheering on our heroes. Not to mention, the best moment of all, watching my family win silver in eventing, goooo Z!”

“Z” refers to Eugenie’s cousin, Zara Tindall, who won a silver medal as part of Team GB’s eventing team at the London 2012 Olympics.

Eugenie, Beatrice and their other cousins, Prince William and his wife, Kate, Prince Harry and Peter Phillips were among the spectators cheering on Zara at the event in Greenwich Park.

Photographs from the time show the British royals waving, clapping and cheering as Zara was presented by her mother and fellow Olympian, Princess Anne.

The late Queen Elizabeth II surprised even her family members when she took part in a James Bond sketch during the London 2012 Olympics, which saw her joined by Daniel Craig at Buckingham Palace before ‘skydiving’ into the Olympic Stadium into her seat.

Referring to that iconic moment Eugenie told Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast last year: “Nobody knew… it was amazing. We were all surprised.”

Just weeks before the London Games, Eugenie, then 22, graduated from Newcastle University with a 2:1 in English literature and history of art.

Since then, she’s become a director at art gallery, Hauser & Wirth, and married her long-term love, Jack Brooksbank, in 2018.

The couple became parents with the birth of son August in February 2021, followed by second son, Ernest in May 2023.

  • Kate, the Princess of Wales, hands Carlos Alcaraz his Wimbledon trophy in a rare appearance for her

Kate, the Princess of Wales, hands Carlos Alcaraz his Wimbledon trophy in a rare appearance for her

    [ad_1]

LONDON (AP) — Kate, the Princess of Wales, handed Carlos Alcaraz the champion’s trophy after the Wimbledon men’s final at the All England Club on Sunday in only her second public appearance since announcing she was diagnosed with cancer.

Kate, wife of heir to the throne Prince William, was greeted by a standing ovation when she arrived in the Royal Box at Centre Court to watch Alcaraz’s victory over Novak Djokovic. After leaving the court following the trophy ceremony, the princess and Alcaraz had a conversation in a room inside the tournament’s main stadium.

“You played so well,” Kate told him. “Enjoy the win.”

Earlier, Kate — wearing a purple dress, one of Wimbledon’s official colors — went from the stands down to the playing surface to present the trophies, part of her duties as patron of the All England Club, which hosts the annual tournament.

She shook hands with some of the ball kids who worked at the tournament, then exchanged words with both players and applauded for Alcaraz after giving him the winner’s trophy for the second year in a row.

“It was, of course, a privilege to be in her presence again. I’ve said to her that it is very nice to see her in good health; she seems to be in good health,” Djokovic said at his postmatch news conference. “That’s obviously very positive news for everyone in this country, but also for Wimbledon.”

Kate and her 9-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, got to the site of the grass-court Grand Slam tournament in southwest London in a motorcade about a half-hour before the final was scheduled to begin. They went to a terrace at the club that is connected to the main stadium by a pedestrian walkway and greeted several people, including 2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu and other young British tennis players.

Also in the Royal Box for the final were Kate’s sister, Pippa Matthews, actors Tom Cruise and Benedict Cumberbatch and several past Wimbledon champions, including Rod Laver, Andre Agassi and Stefan Edberg.

Since 2016, Kate has been the patron of the All England Club. She did not attend Saturday when Barbora Krejcikova defeated Jasmine Paolini for the women’s title.

Kate revealed in March that she has an unspecified form of cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. Her lone public appearance since then had been attending last month’s birthday parade for King Charles III. Before that event, she released a statement saying she was “making good progress” but still had “good days and bad days.”

Prince William has been a regular at Wimbledon finals but was not there Sunday. Instead, he planned to be in Germany to watch England face Spain in the final of the men’s soccer European Championship. He is the president of the English Football Association.

  • King Charles III to visit Australia and Samoa as he recovers from cancer

King Charles III to visit Australia and Samoa as he recovers from cancer

    [ad_1]

LONDON (AP) — King Charles III is preparing to visit Australia and Samoa in October, an itinerary that will span 12 time zones and test the monarch’s stamina as he recovers from cancer treatment.

The trip, announced on Sunday by Buckingham Palace, marks a watershed moment for the 75-year-old king, who has been slowly returning to public duties after taking a break following his cancer diagnosis in early February. The decision to undertake such a long journey will be seen as a sign of Charles’ recovery, even though the program in Australia will be “limited.”

The visit to Australia will be a critical moment for the king as he tries to shore up support for the monarchy at home and abroad. The trip will mark the first time since he ascended the throne that Charles will visit one of the 14 countries outside the United Kingdom where the British monarch remains head of state, a link that is a source of pride for some but an unwelcome reminder of Britain’s colonial dominance for others.

While he will undoubtedly be welcomed by fans waving the flag and singing “God Save the King,” Charles is also likely to hear anti-monarchy voices in a country where 45% of voters in a 1999 referendum supported creating an Australian republic. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor Party supports ditching the monarchy, but the government says it isn’t a priority and there is no timeline for another referendum.

“It’s clear that there’s a real reevaluation going on there as to whether the Commonwealth, and certainly the realms, want to retain their connection to the British monarchy or not,” Ed Owens, a historian and author of “After Elizabeth: Can the Monarchy Save Itself?” told The Associated Press in an interview before the trip was announced. “So, you know, there are troubled waters ahead.”

Albanese said he and Governor-General Sam Mostyn, the monarch’s representative in Australia, would welcome Charles and Queen Camilla. Albanese noted Charles had already made 15 official visits to Australia, the most recent in 2018. The monarch had also spent several months in an Australian bordering school as a teen in 1966.

“The King has a deep regard for our great nation, and has always spoken warmly of the time he has spent here and the astounding beauty of our extraordinary continent,” Albanese said in a statement.

The palace provided few details of the tour. Charles and Camilla will visit the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales as well as making a more formal state visit to Samoa, where the king will appear at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, the palace said.

The capital territory is home to Canberra, Australia’s national capital. Sydney, Australia’s largest city, is in New South Wales.

Charles holds the symbolic title of head of the Commonwealth, a voluntary association of 56 independent nations, most of which have historic ties to Britain. The annual heads of government meeting will be held Oct. 21-25.

However, the trip will not include a stop in New Zealand.

“The King’s doctors have advised that a further extension to Their Majesties’ trip should be avoided at this time, to prioritize His Majesty’s continued recovery,” the palace said in a statement.

Albanese said planning for the visit was still underway and more information would be made public in due course.

Isaac Jeffrey, national director and CEO of the Australian Republic Movement, the peak body advocating for an Australian republic with an Australian head of state, called for a meeting with Charles and questioned why Australia should pay for the royal visit.

“This visit is a great opportunity for all Australians to ask themselves whether the British Royals really represent a modern Aussie democracy,” Jeffrey said in a statement.

The trip comes at a time when the health problems of Charles and Kate, the Princess of Wales, have highlighted the challenges faced by a slimmed-down royal family as the king pledges to cut costs.

With fewer working royals available to carry out the endless round of ribbon cuttings, awards ceremonies and state events that make up the life of a modern royal, the remaining family members have been forced to take on more events.

Charles’ cancer diagnosis occurred at the same time that the Princess of Wales — one of the most popular royals — underwent abdominal surgery and later announced she, too, had cancer. Prince William took time off to support his wife and their young family.

That left Camilla, the king’s sister, Princess Anne, and his youngest brother, Prince Edward, to shoulder the load. Princess Anne was briefly hospitalized last month after an accident thought to involve a horse left her with a concussion.

UK’s new Labour government sets out plans to ‘take the brakes off’ the economy

    [ad_1]

LONDON — Britain’s new Labour Party government campaigned on a promise to bring bold change at modest cost. Prime Minister Keir Starmer gets a chance to show how he aims to reconcile those two aims on Wednesday when the government announces its plans for the coming year.

Starmer said the measures announced in the King’s Speech to Parliament would “take the brakes off Britain” and “create wealth for people up and down the country” by spurring economic growth.

The King’s Speech is the centerpiece of the State Opening of Parliament, an occasion where royal pomp meets hard-nosed politics, as King Charles III dons a diamond-studded crown, sits on a gilded throne and announces the government’s legislative agenda.

Starmer said the speech would be a “down payment on our plans for the next five years,” which center on getting the U.K.’s stuttering economy growing strongly.

Labour won a landslide election victory on July 4 as voters turned on the Conservatives after years of high inflation, ethics scandals and a revolving door of prime ministers. Starmer has promised to patch up the country’s aging infrastructure and frayed public services, but says he won’t raise personal taxes and insists change must be bound by “unbreakable fiscal rules.”

The government said Wednesday’s speech will include more than 35 bills – the Conservatives’ last speech had just 21 – ranging from housebuilding to nationalizing Britain’s railways and decarbonizing the nation’s power supply with a publicly owned green energy firm.

“It looks like it’s going to be very ambitious and very wide-ranging,” said Jill Rutter, senior research fellow at the Institute for Government think tank.

There will be moves to give more powers to local government, and a law to ensure all government budgets get advance independent scrutiny. Rutter called that the “anti- Liz Truss bill,” referring to the Conservative prime minister whose package of unfunded tax cuts in 2022 rocked the British economy and ended her brief term in office.

Also expected are new measures to strengthen border security, following on from Starmer’s decision to scrap the Conservatives’ plan to send people arriving in the U.K. across the English Channel on a one-way trip to Rwanda. The contentious scheme faced multiple legal challenges and cost the U.K. several hundred million pounds (dollars), without a single flight taking off.

There is also expected to be a law regulating the development of artificial intelligence, a possible break from the previous government’s light-touch approach to governing AI.

The government may also announce significant changes to the U.K.’s political system, including lowering the voting age from 18 to 16, one of Labour’s election promises.

It might even tackle an issue that has foxed previous governments: reforming the House of Lords. The unelected upper chamber of Parliament is packed with almost 800 members – largely lifetime political appointees, with a smattering of judges, bishops and hereditary aristocrats. Starmer has said he would like to remove the hereditary nobles and set a Lords retirement age of 80.

While much of Starmer’s agenda marks a break with the defeated Conservative government of former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Starmer may revive Sunak’s plan to stop future generations from smoking by gradually raising the minimum age for buying tobacco.

Wednesday’s address is the second such speech delivered by Charles since the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022. For all its royal trappings – including lords in ermine-trimmed robes and an official known as Black Rod — it is the King’s Speech in name only.

“The king has zero agency in this,” Rutter said.

NHS nurse Harriet looked elegant in a pale pink Beulah London dress with a Nicola de Selincourt hat, LK Bennett heels and an Aspinal of London bag.

Meanwhile, Peter, 46, who is head of partner acquisition for the rights agency CSM Sport & Entertainment, looked smart in a morning suit.

The couple, who were pictured packing on the PDA at the polo earlier this month, were joined at Ascot by Peter’s cousin, Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

  • Oil producers led by Saudis extended supply cuts amid slack prices

Oil producers led by Saudis extended supply cuts amid slack prices

    [ad_1]

FRANKFURT, Germany — FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Saudi Arabia and allied oil producing countries on Sunday extended output cuts through next year, a move aimed at supporting slack prices that haven’t risen even amid turmoil in the Middle East and the start of the summer travel season.

The OPEC+ alliance, made up of members of the producers cartel and allied countries including Russia, extended three different sets of cuts totaling 5.8 million barrels a day.

International benchmark Brent has loitered in the $81-$83 per barrel range for the past month. Even the war in Gaza and attacks on shipping in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels in Yemen have not pushed prices up toward the $100 per barrel level last seen in September 2022. Reasons include higher interest rates, concerns about demand due to slower than desired economic growth in Europe and China, and rising non-OPEC supply including from U.S. shale producers,

Yet the Saudis need higher oil prices to fund ambitious plans by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to diversify the country’s economy away from fossil fuel exports. Higher oil prices would also help Russia maintain economic growth and stability as it spends heavily on its war against Ukraine.

Analysts say the cuts could push oil prices higher in coming months, but much depends on demand for oil going forward. The summer usually sees a spike in demand through the July-September quarter, but uncertainty about demand grows after that.

U.S. motorists have benefitted from weaker oil prices. Gasoline prices have been quiescent recently, averaging $3.56 per gallon last week, a penny less than a year ago. That is down from a record national average high of $5 per gallon in June 2022. U.S. prices can vary by region and Western states have been paying more, with gas hitting an average $5.05 per gallon in California.

U.S. gas prices rise along with crude because the price of oil makes up half the cost of a gallon of gasoline. The price swings are much smaller in Europe because there taxes make up a bigger proportion of the price of fuel.

The cuts that are being extended break down as follows: 2 billion barrels a day agreed among all 23 OPEC+ members were extended through the end of 2025, according to an OPEC statement.

Then, voluntary reductions of 1.65 million barrels a day by a smaller group of members was extended until end 2025 as well, according to a report on the official Saudi Press Agency.

And another 2.2 million barrels a day in voluntary cuts, due to expire at the end of this month, were extended until September but would then be gradually reduced month by month until they are eliminated by September 2025.

Prince George’s surprise appearance with Prince William leaves royal fans saying the same thing

    [ad_1]

Prince George delighted royal fans when he made an unexpected appearance alongside his father, the Prince of Wales, at the FA Cup Final at Wembley on Saturday.

The young royal’s appearance was a welcome surprise for royal fans amid the Princess of Wales’ extended period out of the spotlight as she continues her chemotherapy treatment for cancer.

There’s no denying Prince George, 10, was the image of his father as he watched the Manchester City v Man United game

Dressed in a smart navy suit, a crisp white shirt and a navy tie adorned with pastel pink candy stripes, the royal couldn’t have looked more similar to his father who wore a near-identical outfit.

The only difference in Prince William’s attire was the addition of another stripe on his tie. Like father, like son!

Prince William enjoyed the football with Prince George

The royal duo’s outfits were the only thing that caught the attention of royal fans, however. Many noticed the near identical similarities between Prince William and his son’s mannerisms.

“The way they’re both standing the exact same way!” noted a fan on X, formerly Twitter. “Aww Prince George definitely is his dad’s mini me,” commented another.

In a sweet moment, Prince George did well to remain composed despite his excitement as Jack Grealish shook his hand at the end of the game. The young royal couldn’t help but grin sweetly and look up at his dad after the encounter.

“George is handsome and confident. Love his smile, just like his father!” wrote another royal fan on X.

At just 10, it’s clear to see Prince George has inherited his mother and father’s confidence. The royal could be seen exchanging a few words with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as he walked past after the match.

He also spoke briefly with former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson following the full-time whistle.

It’s not the first time Prince George’s confidence and “maturity” has been noticed by royal fans.

In 2022, after the funeral of his late great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, Jo Frost, AKA Supernanny weighed in on the future king’s impeccable behaviour

“You did yourselves proud, your poise and grace was outstanding, we cried when you did and we stood in silence and awe as we honoured with respect Her Majesty, your late great-grandmother,” she addressed the royal in an Instagram post.

“They did amazing for the situation, length of time and their ages. Their Gan Gan would be proud of them.”

  • Nigeria’s fashion and dancing styles in the spotlight as Harry, Meghan visit its largest city

Nigeria’s fashion and dancing styles in the spotlight as Harry, Meghan visit its largest city

    [ad_1]

LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigeria’s fashion and traditional dances were at full display on Sunday as Prince Harry and Meghan arrived in its largest city, Lagos, as part of their three-day visit to the country to promote mental health for soldiers and empower young people.

The couple, invited to the West African nation by its military, were treated to different bouts of dancing, starting from the Lagos airport where a troupe’s acrobatic moves left both applauding and grinning. One of the dancers, who looked younger than 5 years old, exchanged salutes with Harry from high up in the air, standing on firm shoulders.

Going with Meghan’s white top was the traditional Nigerian aso oke, a patterned handwoven fabric wrapped around the waist and often reserved for special occasions. It was a gift from a group of women a day earlier.

The couple visited a local charity – Giants of Africa — which uses basketball to empower young people. There, they were treated to another round of dancing before unveiling a partnership between the organization and their Archewell Foundation.

“What you guys are doing here at Giants of Africa is truly amazing,” Harry said of the group. “The power of sport can change lives. It brings people together and creates community and there are no barriers, which is the most important thing.”

Masai Ujiri, the charity’s president and an ex-NBA star, wished Meghan a happy Mother’s Day and acknowledged how hard it can be “for us to be away from our kids and family to make things like this happen.”

“To do so shows dedication (and) we truly appreciate it,” he told the couple.

Meghan and Harry later attended a fundraiser for Nigeria’s soldiers wounded in the country’s fight against Islamic extremists and other armed groups in the country’s conflict-battered north. The event was related to Harry’s Invictus Games, which Nigeria is seeking to host in the future.

The couple were also hosted at the Lagos State Government House, where Meghan received another handwoven Nigerian fabric.

“We’ve extended an additional invitation to them that they can always come back when they want to,” Lagos Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu told reporters.

  • Meghan Markle to miss Mother’s Day with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet

Meghan Markle to miss Mother’s Day with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet

    [ad_1]

The Duchess of Sussex will sadly miss out on celebrating Mother’s Day with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Prince Harry and Meghan will conclude their three-day trip to Nigeria on Sunday 12 May, when the annual holiday is marked in the US this year.

The couple were invited to the west African country by the chief of defence staff, with their public engagements including a visit to a school and a training session for Nigeria: Unconquered.

Archie, who turned five last Monday, and Lilibet, who will celebrate her third birthday on 4 June, did not accompany their parents on their overseas visit, remaining at the family’s home in Montecito, California. Find out why on the latest episode of HELLO!’s A Right Royal Podcast...

LISTEN: Why Archie and Lilibet did not join Harry and Meghan on Nigeria trip

But the youngsters have not been far from Meghan’s mind as she revealed at the Lightway Academy on Friday that Lilibet loves singing and dancing, while Archie enjoys construction.

    MORE ON ARCHIE AND LILIBET

The Duchess usually celebrates Mother’s Day privately with her children, but in the past, she has helped to support charitable campaigns.

Her first Mother’s Day in 2019 fell just six days after she and Harry welcomed baby Archie.

On their now-inactive Instagram account, Sussex Royal, the couple shared a sweet snapshot of Archie’s tiny toes against a backdrop of forget-me-nots in their garden at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

The caption poignantly made reference to Harry’s late Diana, Princess of Wales, whose favourite flowers were forget-me-nots: “Paying tribute to all mothers today – past, present, mothers-to-be, and those lost but forever remembered. We honour and celebrate each and every one of you.”

In 2021, when Meghan was just weeks away from giving birth to her daughter Lilibet, it was confirmed that the Sussexes’ Archewell Foundation was working with local organisation, Harvest Home L.A, to donate essential items to pregnant women and their children.

The Duchess also penned a personal letter, writing: “As a mom, and an expectant mom, I deeply appreciate the significance of community support, safe and accessible pregnancy resources, and trusted guidance in a nurturing setting.

“These ingredients are essential to not just our physical health, but our mental well-being, and I commend you for leading a compassionate community that lives these values.”

And last year, Meghan supported a campaign from Alliance of Moms, which aims to raise awareness of “expectant and parenting foster youth” in Los Angeles.

The organisation was co-founded by one of Meghan’s closest friends, Kelly McKee Zajfenwho gushed about the Duchess “incredibly nurturing” nature in an Instagram post.

Kelly wrote: “As Mother’s Day approaches, I can’t help but think of my own #commUNITY of Motherhood. I instantly think of you Meg. How incredibly nurturing and warm and open you are. What an incredible friend and mother. I’m truly in awe of you and I am so grateful you are part of my #CommUNITYofmotherhood.”

She added: “You are always the first to say yes and support those you love. You are a fierce advocate for those who are in need. Thank you for joining this year’s campaign to support LA’s expectant and parenting foster youth, which helps provide critical services, education, resources and advocacy so they can build a better future for themselves and their families.”

  • Mixing games and education, Prince Harry and Meghan arrive in Nigeria to promote mental health

Mixing games and education, Prince Harry and Meghan arrive in Nigeria to promote mental health

    [ad_1]

ABUJA, Nigeria — ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, arrived in Nigeria amid pomp and dancing on Friday to champion mental health for young people affected by conflicts and to promote the Invictus Games, which the prince founded to aid the rehabilitation of wounded and sick servicemembers and veterans.

The couple, in the West African nation for the first time on the invitation of its military, began their three-day visit by going to the Lightway Academy school which receives support from their Archewell foundation to train young girls affected by conflicts in Nigeria, before going on to meet with the nation’s military officers.

Harry and Meghan will also be meeting with wounded soldiers and their families in what Nigerian officials have said is a show of support to improve the morale of the soldiers, including those fighting a 14-year war against Islamic extremists in the country’s northeast.

Harry served in Afghanistan as an Apache helicopter copilot gunner, after which he founded the Invictus Games in 2014 to offer wounded veterans and servicemembers the challenge of competing in sports events similar to the Paralympics. Nigeria was among the nations that participated in last year’s edition of the games.

At the Abuja school where they kicked off an inaugural mental health summit organized by local non-profit GEANCO, which partners with their foundation, the couple were received by a dancing troupe and a crowd of excited students and teachers.

“We’ve got to acknowledge those amazing dance moves!” Meghan said. “My husband was excited to jump up!”

They then went into the classrooms to interact with the children, who showed robot cars they had built.

They spoke to the students about mental health, and about their own children, Archie and Lilibet.

“In some cases around the world … there is a stigma when it comes to mental health. Too many people don’t want to talk about it,” Harry said. “So will you promise to us that after today, no more being scared, no more being unsure of mental health?”

    Meghan praised her husband’s openness.

“You see why I’m married to him?” she said of Harry amid cheers, before urging the schoolchildren to never be ashamed of their experiences in life. “It is a complete honor to have our first visit to Nigeria; be here with all of you. We believe in you. We believe in your future,” she said.

Student Nnenna Okorie couldn’t hide her excitement at meeting the couple. “She is the prettiest human being ever,” said Okorie, a senior student at the school. “I admire her so much and then Harry. I love how he is so supportive,” she said.

The couple then went to Nigeria’s Defense Headquarters where they were received by servicemen and their wives before going into a private meeting with Nigeria’s chief of defense staff, Gen. Christopher Musa.

During their stay, Harry and Meghan will also attend basketball and volleyball matches in Abuja and Lagos. Meghan will co-host an event on women in leadership with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization, according to the couple’s spokesperson, Charlie Gipson.

The news of Meghan’s visit excited some in Nigeria where her life — and association with the British royal family — is closely followed. Meghan has also said in the past that she found out through a genealogy test that she was 43% Nigerian.

The Nigerian military has touted the Invictus Games as one which could help the recovery of thousands of its personnel who have been fighting the homegrown Boko Haram Islamic extremists and their factions since 2009 when they launched an insurgency.

“Eighty percent of our soldiers that have been involved in this recovery program are getting better (and) their outlook to life is positive,” Marquis, the military’s sports director, said.

“The recovery program has given them an opportunity to improve their personal self-esteem, to improve their mental health and emotional intelligence.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son Prince Archie is celebrating his fifth birthday on 6 May.

While it’s not known how the youngster will celebrate his big day, we don’t doubt that his doting parents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and younger sister Princess Lilibet will be on hand to kick off the family festivities.

When the royal tot came into the world back in 2019, royal fans were surprised to discover that Archie Harrison had inherited his father’s red hair gene – a rare trait which Harry himself inherited from his mother’s side of the family.

Harry, 39, has previously spoken about his two children’s vibrant red hair, explaining how Archie and Lilibet’s hair is a result of “very strong” Spencer genes.

Prince Harry was also born with red hair

During an interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he divulged: “The Spencer gene is very, very strong. I actually really, genuinely thought at the beginning of my relationship [with Meghan] that should this go the distance and we have kids that there’s no way the ginger gene will stand up to my wife’s genes, but I was wrong!”

All three of Princess Diana’s siblings — Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Charles, boast naturally vibrant red hair, a unique trait which was later passed on to Harry.

Harry, Meghan and Archie visit Cape Town

Royal fans first caught a glimpse of Prince Archie’s auburn hair back in September 2019 while the family-of-three were in South Africa completing a royal tour.

During their visit, Prince Harry, Meghan and Archie met with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe at the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation in Cape Town. And in photos shared from the visit, Archie could be seen rocking tiny tufts of vibrant red hair.

    Twinning with Harry

The royal tot made a string of appearances in the Duke and Duchess’s Netflix docuseries titled Harry & Meghan. Royal fans were given a candid glimpse inside the pair’s family life in Montecito, California, with Harry and Meghan taking viewers on a very intimate and personal journey.

Among the snippets and snapshots, the couple also included a heart-melting picture of Harry bonding with his mini-me son at home. The doting dad could be seen guiding Archie, who in turn flashed a broad grin akin to his father’s cheeky grin.

    A musician in the making

Elsewhere in their eye-opening Netflix series, Harry and Meghan included a precious home video of Archie getting to grips with a miniature toy piano.

In the clip, which featured in episode six, Archie, now five, could be seen confidently playing a few notes whilst singing the nursery rhyme, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Take a look in the video below…

Whilst the youngster’s musical talents left many impressed, Archie’s flaming red locks arguably stole the show in all their curly glory.

    Christmas card photo

Prince Archie’s red hair also made a striking appearance back in 2021 when the youngster featured on his parents’ annual Christmas card with his sister Princess Lilibet.

The photocard read: “Happy Holidays. This year, 2021, we welcomed our daughter, Lilibet, to the world. Archie made us a ‘Mama’ and a ‘Papa’, and Lili made us a family.”

In the picture, taken by photographer Alexi Lubomirski, Archie looked so sweet as he clambered atop his father with a cheeky expression etched across his face.

Whilst the father-son duo had plenty in common thanks to their bright copper locks, Archie and Harry also coordinated in matching blue jeans and smart linen shirts.

    Bonding with Meghan and Lilibet

Elsewhere in Harry & Meghan, royal fans were able to catch a peek of Archie’s auburn hair in a gorgeous family photo taken in their sprawling Montecito garden.

Doting mum Meghan could be seen in the snap expertly balancing both children on her hips.
