Highlights this year include music specials with Derek Hough and Jimmy Fallon, the Rockefeller Tree lighting hosted by Reba McEntire, Lacey Chabert’s latest Hallmark Channel movie, NFL games and even cozy mysteries with a Christmas theme.

    Here are some highlights.

The special will also stream live on Peacock.

    — Some people find holiday prep daunting. It comes naturally to Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, whose life seems to be a Pinterest page. She’s got ideas to share in a special episode of Netflix’s “With Love, Meghan” lifestyle series. In “With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration,” Meghan taps guests including Naomi Osaka and Tom Colicchio to bake, make treats with holiday flair and craft. “Being a hostess or a host, it’s about making people feel comfortable,” the royal says.

    Dec. 5

Instead, a single snowflake falls, leaving Gobo, feeling uninspired to write an annual holiday song. For the first time, he ventures into the human world to seek out ideas. The special is a reminder that unplanned moments can also come with their own magic.

    — Roku Channel has a follow-up to the holiday romance “Jingle Bell Love” starring Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block and Michelle Morgan. In “Jingle Bell Wedding,” Jack and Jessica are engaged and looking forward to a New Year’s Eve wedding. They’re also in charge of organizing an annual Christmas concert. Will all the planning derail their relationship?

    Dec. 6

    — Lacey Chabert works for Santa Claus in the new Hallmark Channel movie “She’s Making a List.” Chabert plays Isabel, whose job is to track kids’ behavior throughout the year. Chabert and Walker previously co-starred in a Valentine’s Day movie for Hallmark in 2018. “She’s Making a List” also streams on Hallmark+.

    — The animated movie “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” is an adaptation on the farcical song of the same name. In the special, airing on The CW Network, a boy sets out to find his missing grandmother on Christmas Eve.

    Dec. 11

    — The Dolly Parton song, “Coat of Many Colors” comes to life in a TV movie airing for the first time on the CW. Set against the Smoky Mountains in the 1950s, it’s about the Parton family and how their love, faith — and a patchwork coat — help them to move past tragedy. Alyvia Alyn Lind plays young Dolly and Jennifer Nettles and Rick Schroeder portray her mom and dad. “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” originally debuted in 2015.

    — Jimmy Fallon’s musical comedy special from last year gets a repeat. In “Jimmy Fallon’s Holiday Seasoning Spectacular,” the “Tonight Show” host searches a New York apartment building for the holiday spirit and encounters different celebrity guests behind each door. Jonas Brothers, Justin Timberlake, LL Cool J, the Roots and “Weird Al” Yankovic all appear.

    Dec. 12

    — In “A Suite Holiday Romance” for Hallmark Channel, Jessy Schram stars a ghostwriter who checks-in to a fancy New York hotel for a job writing a memoir. She meets a handsome Brit (Dominic Sherwood) and the two experience a series of misunderstandings until they realize they’re meant to be.

    Dec. 15

    — Acorn TV has a two-part Christmas special of “The Madame Blanc Mysteries” airing Dec. 15 and Dec. 22. British actor Sally Lindsay plays antique dealer Jean White, who visits the France museum Maison Sainte-Victoire on Christmas Eve to authenticate an Ormolu box once owned by Marie Antoinette. It’s discovered that the box contains a ticking time bomb and Jean and her team have just 90 minutes to diffuse it.

    Dec. 16

    — “The Nutcracker” ballet is a Christmas classic, and PBS is offering a reimagined version taped at the London Coliseum. Still set to Tchaikovsky’s score, this version centralizes Clara’s story and is set in Edwardian London where a street scene has dancing chimney sweeps and suffragettes. “Great Performances: Nutcracker from English National Ballet” will also be available for streaming on PBS.org and the PBS app.

    Dec. 20

    — Lifetime is jumping on the pickleball popularity bandwagon with the new movie “A Pickleball Christmas.” It stars James Lafferty as a tennis pro whose family’s racquet club is on the brink of closing its doors. He and a tennis instructor take part in a holiday tournament to save the day.

    Dec. 21

    — Tate Donovan and Jillian Murphy star in a new Christmas movie for Great American Family called “Mario Lopez Presents: Chasing Christmas.” In the film, Donovan plays a morning show host and Murphy a designer who team up to make a child’s Christmas wish come true. Lopez’s son Dominic also has a role.

    — The Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer classic “The Sound of Music” airs on ABC.

    Dec. 24

    — “Home Alone” airs on ABC. The film made Macaulay Culkin a child star for playing a boy whose parents accidentally leave him home when their large family hurries off on a Christmas vacation. He’s left to defend his house against two clumsy burglars.

    Dec. 25

    — Netflix is gifting us with football on Christmas again this year. The Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Commanders game is at 1 p.m. Eastern followed by the Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings at 4:30 p.m. Eastern.

  • A crystal Fabergé egg crafted for Russian royalty is expected to sell for more than $26 million

    [ad_1]

LONDON (AP) — A rare crystal and diamond Fabergé egg crafted for Russia’s ruling family before it was toppled by revolution is going up for auction, valued at more than 20 million pounds ($26.4 million).

Christie’s auction house says the Winter Egg is just one of seven of the opulent ovoids remaining in private hands. It will be offered for sale at Christie’s London headquarters on Tuesday.

The 4-inch (10-centimeter) tall egg is made from finely carved rock crystal, covered in a delicate snowflake motif wrought in platinum and 4,500 tiny diamonds. It opens to reveal a removable tiny basket of bejewelled quartz flowers symbolizing spring.

Margo Oganesian, the head of Christie’s Russian art department, likened it to a luxurious Kinder Surprise chocolate.

The Winter Egg is a superb example of craft and design, “the ‘Mona Lisa’ for decorative arts,” Oganesian said.

One of just two created by female designer Alma Pihl, the egg was commissioned by Czar Nicholas II for his mother Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna as an Easter present in 1913. Pihl’s other egg is owned by Britain’s royal family.

Craftsman Peter Carl Fabergé and his company created more than 50 of the eggs for Russia’s imperial family between 1885 and 1917, each elaborately unique and containing a hidden surprise. Czar Alexander III started the tradition by presenting an egg to his wife each Easter. His successor, Nicholas II, extended the gift to his wife and mother.

The Romanov royal family ruled Russia for 300 years before it was ousted by the 1917 revolution. Nicholas and his family were executed in 1918.

Bought by a London dealer for 450 pounds when the cash-strapped Communist authorities sold off some of Russia’s artistic treasures in the 1920s, the egg changed hands several times. It was believed lost for two decades until it was auctioned by Christie’s in 1994 for more than 7 million Swiss francs ($5.6 million at the time). It sold again in 2002 for $9.6 million.

Now it is expected to surpass the record $18.5 million paid at a 2007 Christie’s auction for another Fabergé egg created for the Rothschild banking family.

There are 43 surviving imperial Fabergé eggs, most in museums.

  • Royal family website makes major update following Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor drama

    [ad_1]

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was stripped of his royal titles last month following further revelations about his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and links to an alleged Chinese spy.

Andrew had been known as The Duke of York, but this title has since been removed, alongside his princely style. And the update to his name is now reflected on the royal family’s official website.

Although the royal retains his position as eighth in line to the throne, the royal family’s website now carries his new name, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

The publication of the name also helps to clear up confusion over its spelling. When it was confirmed that Andrew was being stripped of his titles, the name was shared without a hyphen, however, the royal family’s website carries a version with the hyphen.

Andrew’s name has been updated on the royal family’s website

    More changes in Andrew’s life

There have been plenty of changes in Andrew’s life since he was stripped of his royal titles, as the former Duke of York will be forced out of Royal Lodge, where he’s lived since 2004.

The move will come as soon as it’s practical, which is expected to be over Christmas or early 2026. Andrew is due to move into a home on Sandringham Estate, and this will be privately funded by King Charles.

There has been plenty of speculation about which property Andrew will be calling home when he moves, including Park House, Gardens House, The Folly and York Cottage.

    Effect on daughters

Despite losing his titles, the move hasn’t affected Andrew’s daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. The royal ladies have retained both their titles and their positions in line to the throne.

Speaking on HELLO!’s A Right Royal Podcast, HELLO!’s royal editor, Emily Nash, revealed that Charles and Prince William are unlikely to want to “punish” the pair.

Beatrice and Eugenie will retain their royal titles

She explained: “[Princess] Eugenie was in Paris with some girlfriends, [Princess] Beatrice was in Saudi Arabia at a tech summit in Riyadh. We believe that’s with her tech firm, Affinity. I mean, what do you do when your parents are being so publicly humiliated and are in the eye of the storm?”

“You have to have some sympathy for them. And I think we’ve seen that compassion coming from the King and the Prince of Wales. It’s been made clear that they’re not going to be punished for things beyond their control. This is not something of their doing.”

  • UK leader suggests former Prince Andrew should testify in Epstein investigation

    [ad_1]

LONDON — Pressure is increasing for the former Prince Andrew to give evidence to a U.S. congressional committee investigating the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after Britain’s prime minister suggested he should testify.

Keir Starmer declined to comment directly about King Charles III’s disgraced younger brother, but told reporters traveling with him for the Group of 20 summit in Johannesburg that as a “general principle” people should provide evidence to investigators.

“I don’t comment on his particular case,’’ Starmer said. “But as a general principle I’ve held for a very long time is that anybody who has got relevant information in relation to these kind of cases should give that evidence to those that need it.’’

The former prince, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, has so far ignored a request from members of the House Oversight Committee for a “transcribed interview” about his “long-standing friendship” with Epstein. Andrew was stripped of his royal titles and honors last month as the royal family tried to insulate itself from criticism about his relationship with Epstein.

Starmer’s comments came after Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the committee’s ranking Democrat, and Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, a Democrat from Virginia, said Andrew “continues to hide” from serious questions.

“Our work will move forward with or without him, and we will hold anyone who was involved in these crimes accountable, no matter their wealth, status or political party,” they said in a statement released on Friday. “We will get justice for the survivors.”

  • Why Prince William and Princess Kate will delay announcing Prince George’s new school

    [ad_1]

The Prince and Princess of Wales‘ firstborn son Prince George is facing a big life change – the start of secondary school. George, who currently attends Lambrook School in Berkshire with his siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, is due to change schools in September 2026.

The two front-runners are the all-boys school Eton College in Windsor, where William and his brother Prince Harry went, and the co-educational Marlborough College in Berkshire, the Princess of Wales’ alma mater.

William and Kate are said to be deciding between the two schools, but once they have made their decision, it’s likely they will delay announcing 12-year-old George’s next educational step for a while.

    Why the delay?

Melanie Sanderson, Managing Editor of The Good Schools Guide, explained why. “If the Wales family runs true to form, they will announce Prince George’s secondary school at the eleventh hour, possibly as late as September 2026,” Melanie told HELLO!

“They understand that the school itself, as well as George’s new peer group, will fall under intense scrutiny as soon as it is revealed and will probably want to minimise this, allowing the young royal to transition to his new school with as little fanfare as possible.”

Prince George is rumoured to be going to Eton College, where his father William went

As for which school George will be enrolled in, Melanie argued: “I believe Eton is the most likely choice for Prince George. In our most recent review, we describe it as ‘traditional, radical, expectation-busting and packed with confident boys with nary a hint of entitlement’. To me, this encompasses all the values we are told are important to this generation of royals.”

    The timing of previous announcements

Looking back at William and Kate’s previous family announcements, they did indeed wait until the eleventh hour to confirm their children’s schooling. Back in 2022 when the Waleses were moving from London to Windsor, they only announced that George, Charlotte and Louis would go to Lambrook School two weeks before the academic term started.

At the time, the statement from the palace read: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have today announced that Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will attend Lambrook School in Berkshire from September 2022. Their Royal Highnesses are hugely grateful to Thomas’s Battersea where George and Charlotte have had a happy start to their education since 2017 and 2019 respectively and are pleased to have found a school for all three of their children which shares a similar ethos and values to Thomas’s.”

Looking back to when George started going to nursery, Westacre Montessori School in Norfolk, his parents also only announced the news in December 2015, one month before he started in January 2016. The nursery was close to William and Kate’s home at the time, Anmer Hall, which they still use for holidays, and was more importantly located on a private road.

Similarly, when William was preparing to attend Eton College back in 1995, his parents Charles and Diana only announced the move in June, three months before William started in September.

George started at Thomas’s Battersea in September 2017. The choice of school was announced six months prior and caused a lot of hype and fanfare

As for Thomas’s Battersea, however, William and Kate actually announced George’s new school in March 2017, six months before he started attending Reception. Cue the hype and fanfare around the private London school, which the Waleses are perhaps hoping to avoid this time around.

  • The late Queen’s ‘beautiful’ 9-foot wedding cake as you’ve never seen it before

    [ad_1]

On what would have been their 78th anniversary, The Royal Collection Trust has recalled the wedding of the late Queen Elizabeth II and her beloved husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Taking to Instagram on Thursday, the charity shared two photos from the historic occasion, which began with a ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London, followed by a reception in the Ball-Supper Room at Buckingham Palace. “Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II, married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey on this day in 1947,” the caption began. “This photo by Baron, taken in the Throne Room of Buckingham Palace, shows the happy couple on their wedding day.

“The second photo shows Jack Bryant making the final adjustments to their wedding cake. The cake was 2.7 metres (9 feet) high and weighed 226 kg (500 pounds). One tier of the wedding cake was kept for the christening of their first child, Prince Charles, in December 1948.” According to the Royal Collection Trust’s official website, the bride and groom received eleven wedding cakes, but their official choice was baked by McVitie and Price, using ingredients which were sourced from around the world, including Australia.

Queen Elizabeth’s wedding cake was made with ingredients from around the world, earning it the nickname, the ‘10,000 mile’ wedding cake

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s historic wedding cake

A decadent and highly detailed creation, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s wedding cake featured the arms of both families, as well as their respective monograms and regimental and naval badges. After the Pâtisserie team at Le Cordon Bleu London was offered the opportunity to recreate the cake for the ITV documentary, A Very Royal Wedding, Chef Julie Walsh revealed what she and her colleagues learned about the design.

WATCH: Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s 1947 wedding

“The original recipe was developed by Fredrick Schur, Lead Confectioner at McVities & Price. He had his original design for the cake selected by the happy couple out of 11 possible designs. The recipe for the original cake was not disclosed and may have been lost in a fire that devastated the McVities & Price factory many years ago,” explained Julie, “therefore, we had to piece together the information we had to develop the recipe.

“We discovered that as the royal wedding took place in 1940s post-war Britain, food rationing was still in force, many of the ingredients for a cake of this magnitude would have been scarce and hard to find in the quantities required. The people of Britain and the Commonwealth donated as much as they could spare to ensure the young princess had a fitting cake for the celebrations.

Ingredients were shipped over from all around the world, including Australia

“The most notable donation came from the Girl Guide Association of Australia (Princess Elizabeth held the office of Chief Ranger of the British Empire), who sent seven crates containing ingredients for the cake, including powdered milk, flour, spices, and dried fruit, as well as one bottle of the best Australian Brandy! In addition to the Girl Guides donation, others received included flour from Canada, Rum from Jamaica and brown sugar from Barbados.”

  • Trump to welcome Saudi crown prince with arrival ceremony, deal signings

    [ad_1]

WASHINGTON — It’s not an official state visit, but the White House is preparing to host Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman next week with the pomp and circumstance that is typical of one.

The crown prince’s day at the White House next Tuesday will begin with an arrival ceremony on the sweeping South Lawn and a subsequent greeting on the South Portico, according to a senior White House official.

Then Trump will host him in the Oval Office for a bilateral meeting, followed by a signing and lunch in the Cabinet Room where the U.S. and Saudi Arabia will formalize multiple economic and defense agreements, said the official, granted anonymity to discuss the administration’s planning.

Later in the evening, the White House will hold an East Room dinner hosted and planned by first lady Melania Trump.

His visit is billed as an official working visit because Prince Mohammed is not technically a head of state, the official said.

On Wednesday, dozens of CEOs are expected to attend a meeting of the U.S.-Saudi Business Council at the Kennedy Center, the fine arts facility that is now led and managed by Trump loyalists. Though the U.S. president’s attendance is not yet confirmed for the business meeting, he is likely to attend, the senior White House official said.

Trump’s relationship with the Gulf nations has been a top foreign policy priority for the president in his second term. His first major trip abroad was a tour of the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, where Trump was welcomed with an exceptionally rare Air Force One escort by royal Saudi Air Force F-15s and a state dinner at a UNESCO heritage site.

“I really believe we like each other a lot,” Trump said as he met with Prince Mohammed in the royal palace in Riyadh. Later, Trump described Prince Mohammed as an “incredible man” and “my friend.”

It also marks the first trip to the United States by the crown prince since the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in 2018 during Trump’s first term. U.S. intelligence agencies have said Prince Mohammed likely directed the killing, resulting in sanctions against several Saudi officials. He denies his involvement, and both the Trump and Biden administrations have worked to mend ties with Saudi Arabia since.

  • Prince Harry apologizes to Canada over ‘Hat Gate.’ Duke sorry for wearing Dodgers cap

    [ad_1]

LONDON — LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry went to Toronto for events marking the end of World War I and found himself on an apology tour for offending Canadians.

Speaking to a military charity on Thursday night, the Duke of Sussex sought to once again address the “blue-hatted elephant in the room.” He was referring to his widely ridiculed choice to wear a Los Angeles Dodgers cap at a World Series game in Los Angeles against the Toronto Blue Jays.

It was seen as a major snub in Canada, a British Commonwealth nation, where his father, King Charles III, is the head of state. He was blasted on social media in the Great White North.

Harry apologized for the blunder and tried to put a humorous spin on the incident he referred to as “Hat Gate.”

“When you’re missing a lot of hair on top, and you’re sitting under floodlights, you’ll take any hat that’s available,” he joked in an interview with Canadian broadcaster CTV.

He then donned a Blue Jays cap that happened to be an arm’s length away.

The incident was perceived by some as a test of his allegiance between his birthplace and his adopted home in the U.S. The prince and his wife, Meghan, stepped down from royal duties in 2020 and moved to Canada briefly before settling in California.

The appearance of Harry and Meghan at Game 4 of the series — that LA went on to win in seven games — also rankled some Dodgers fans who were upset at their prime position behind home plate.

The couple sat in the first row – in front of LA royalty — Dodgers great Sandy Koufax and LA Laker star Magic Johnson, who is a part owner of the team.

Harry said the couple, who live about an hour west of Los Angeles in the ritzy coastal enclave of Montecito, had been invited to the game by the team owner.

He felt “under duress” and wore the hat as a polite gesture, something he told the Toronto audience that he thought Canadians — known for their civility — would support.

Harry was in Canada for two days of events and meetings in advance of Remembrance Day on Tuesday that honors armed forces members who died in the line of duty.

“I am truly sorry for wearing a Dodgers cap,” he said to applause at a dinner for the True Patriot Love Foundation, a charity for Canadian service members and veterans.

He then played up his connections to the country, including the fact that his actor wife — before they married and when she was known as Meghan Markle — lived so long in Toronto filming the show “Suits” that many thought she was Canadian.

“Hopefully you can forgive her as a native Californian for her Dodger’s loyalty, even if for just one evening,” he said. “But all jokes aside, this city has always meant a great deal to me — you provided me a wife.”

Harry insisted that he was rooting for the Jays for the final three games of the series — an admission that he told CTV might make his return to LA more difficult.

  • Princess Beatrice granted new special role amid Andrew Mountbatten Windsor family drama

    [ad_1]

    *Month unconfirmed

    June 2000

Epstein and Maxwell attend a party at Windsor Castle to mark Prince Andrew’s 40th birthday, the Princess Royal’s 50th, the Queen Mother’s 100th and Princess Margaret’s 70th, hosted by Queen Elizabeth II.

    March 2001

Later, in 2014, Virginia Giuffre alleges that at age 17 she was trafficked by Epstein and forced to have sex with Prince Andrew on three occasions. The first occasion allegedly occurred in Maxwell’s London townhouse in March 2001. In the court filings and in her memoir released in October 2025, she claimed the other occasions occurred at Epstein’s New York mansion and his private Caribbean island.

    June 2008

Epstein admits to prostituting minors and is convicted, receiving an 18‑month prison sentence.

    2009*

Epstein’s former housekeeper, Juan Alessi, testifies during his employer’s trial that Andrew received ”daily massages” at Epstein’s Florida home.

    July 2009

    Epstein is released from prison.

    December 2010

Andrew is photographed with Epstein in New York’s Central Park.

    February 2011

The Mail on Sunday publishes a photo of Virginia’s alleged first meeting with Prince Andrew. Andrew later emails Epstein saying ”we are in this together”.

    March 2011

Alastair Watson – who spent nine years as Andrew’s private secretary – writes to The Times saying Andrew met Epstein in the ”early 1990s”. Yet eight years later, Andrew told Newsnight that he first encountered Epstein through his ”girlfriend back in 1999”, later saying he saw Epstein ”infrequently and probably no more than once or twice a year”.

    July 2011

Andrew resigns as UK trade envoy shortly.

    December 2014

In a Florida court filing, Virginia alleges being trafficked by Epstein and also alleges to have been forced to have sex with him, Prince Andrew and other men. The judge later said in 2015 the claims are ”immaterial and impertinent” to the case against Epstein.

    January 2015

Buckingham Palace denies Andrew has committed any impropriety after he is named in US documents linked to Epstein.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Andrew makes his first public engagement since the allegations. He says: ”I just wish to reiterate, and to reaffirm, the statements that have already been made on my behalf by Buckingham Palace.”

    2015*

In a civil suit filed against Ghislaine Maxwell, Giuffre testifies that Epstein paid her $15,000 to have sex with Andrew.

    May 2016

During a deposition in her case against Maxwell, it emerges that Giuffre lent the infamous photo to the FBI in 2011 but allegedly last saw it packed in a box and shipped from Colorado to Sydney sometime between between 2011 and 2016, when she emigrated to Australia.

    June 2018

Alleged Chinese spy Yang Tengbo visits Buckingham Palace twice to meet Andrew. He is also said to gain entry to St James’s Palace and Windsor Castle after being invited by the Prince.

    2019*

A newly released document includes a claim from Johanna Sjoberg, who has said she was an associate of Jeffrey Epstein, alleging that Prince Andrew touched her breast while she was sitting on a couch in Epstein’s Manhattan apartment in 2001 – an allegation he has always denied.

    August 2019

Epstein is found dead in his prison cell on 10 August, an apparent suicide, after being charged with sex trafficking.

Separately David Rogers, a pilot on Epstein’s private jet, claims Andrew was a passenger on past flights with Epstein and Giuffre. Rogers also testifies that Epstein, Andrew and Giuffre travelled to the US Virgin Islands on 11 April 2001.

Buckingham Palace says the report contains ”inconsistencies” and notes that in some cases Andrew was on a different continent.

In a statement, the Palace says Andrew is ”appalled by the recent reports of Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged crimes”.

Andrew also issues a statement: ”At no stage during the limited time I spend with him (Epstein) do I see, witness or suspect any behaviour of the sort that subsequently leads to his arrest and conviction.”

     November 2019

BBC Newsnight broadcasts an interview in which Andrew speaks about his relationship with Epstein ”with no bars.” He says he has ”no recollection” of ever meeting Giuffre and adds he could not have had sex with her in March 2001 because he was at Pizza Express with his daughter, Beatrice, that day.

He also says he ”does not regret” his friendship with Epstein, though he admits he should not have visited him in New York in 2010 to break off their friendship.

Four days after the interview, he announces he is stepping back from royal duties ”for the foreseeable future” with permission from Queen Elizabeth II.

He says he ”deeply sympathises” with Epstein’s victims and is willing ”to help any appropriate law enforcement agency with their investigations, if required.”

    December 2019

Giuffre appeals to the British public in a BBC Panorama interview released in December 2019, urging them to ”stand up beside me… help me fight this fight” and ”not accept this as being OK.”

    January 2020

A US prosecutor claims Andrew has provided ”zero co‑operation” in the Epstein sex trafficking inquiry.

US Attorney Geoffrey Berman speaks outside Epstein’s Manhattan mansion saying Andrew’s lawyers have been contacted by prosecutors and the FBI, who request to interview him.

    March 2020

Andrew’s aide, Dominic Hampshire, writes to Yang Tengbo describing the alleged Chinese spy as one of ”Andrew’s closest internal confidants”.

    June 2020

Andrew’s lawyers say he offered to assist the US Department of Justice ”on at least three occasions this year” in their Epstein investigation.

Hours later, Berman says Andrew ”again seeks to falsely portray himself to the public as eager and willing to co‑operate,” though he ”repeatedly declines” requests to schedule an interview.

    August 2021

Giuffre’s lawyers file a civil suit against Andrew. The Prince is the only named defendant in the 15‑page claim, though Epstein and Maxwell are referenced throughout.

    December 2021

Ghislaine Maxwell is convicted in New York of aiding Epstein’s sexual abuse of teenage girls.

    January 2022

A US judge rules the civil case against Andrew may proceed.

Andrew is stripped of his military roles and royal patronages, and he relinquishes his HRH title. Buckingham Palace states Andrew ”continues not to undertake any public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen.”

    February 2022

Court documents reveal that Andrew and Giuffre reach a ”settlement in principle” in the civil claim. The papers say Andrew promised to make a ”substantial donation” to Giuffre’s charity ”in support of victims’ rights”, and pledged to ”demonstrate his regret for his association with Epstein.”

    January 2024

Unsealed documents linked to Ms Giuffre’s civil claim against Ghislaine Maxwell revisit previously made allegations about Prince Andrew – including references to purported sex tapes and claims he was present at an event involving underage girls. Andrew has always denied any involvement in criminal activity.

    December 2024

At a High Court hearing it emerges that Yang Tengbo, the alleged Chinese spy, is a ”close” confidant of Andrew. Andrew issues a statement saying he ceased ”all contact” with Yang once concerns arose.

Andrew is absent from the royal family’s traditional gathering at Sandringham.

    April 2025

Giuffre tragically dies by suicide aged 41 in Neergabby, Western Australia.

    October 2025

An email reportedly sent by Prince Andrew to Jeffrey Epstein in 2011 – in which he is said to have written, “We are in this together” – has been unearthed by The Sun and is being described as a potential “smoking gun.” Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

  • Did the Princess of Wales inspire another royal’s glamorous tiara look?

    [ad_1]

Queen Letizia of Spain’s latest tiara moment was reminiscent of the Princess of Wales. The Spanish royal and her husband, King Felipe, hosted a gala dinner in honor of the Sultan of Oman on Tuesday, for which Letizia looked every inch a Queen at the Royal Palace of Madrid, wearing a ballgown and dazzling tiara.

Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia‘s mother, 53, exuded glamour in her blue “Suraia” dress by The 2nd Skin CO., featuring a bateau neckline, small bows on the sleeves and a train. She topped off her look with Queen Maria Christina’s Cartier Loop tiara, but it’s the way Letizia styled it with her hair down in curls that evoked memories of one of the Princess of Wales’ regal appearances from this year.

In September, at a state banquet during President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump’s historic second state visit to the UK, Catherine wore Queen Mary Lover’s Knot tiara atop her cascading curls.

Letizia’s tiara hairstyle on November 4 echoed the Princess of Wales’ look from September 2025

“Princess Kate’s hair at the State Banquet was the epitome of regal elegance. She chose to wear her hair down in softly defined curls, which created natural movement and bounce while still looking polished and refined for the occasion,” celebrity hairstylist Jason Collier previously told HELLO!.

“The romantic waves added texture and body, perfectly complementing the lace gown and her tiara without competing with them, while still framing her face beautifully. This works so well because it’s understated glamour at its finest. It’s timeless, feminine, and effortlessly sophisticated, proving that sometimes the simplest looks have the most impact.”

Her Royal Highness’ curls that evening at Windsor Castle marked a new tiara hairstyle for the Princess of Wales, who looked regal dressed in a couture gown by British designer Phillipa Lepley with a full-length, hand-embroidered gold Chantilly lace evening coat over a silk crepe gown.

While Catherine is no stranger to wearing her hair down with tiaras — she’s been doing so since December 2022 — Letizia had, prior to November 4, been wearing hers up for tiara appearances during her November 2023 state visit to Denmark and the April 2024 state visit to the Netherlands, though she did wear her hair down in May 2023 at a gala dinner in honor of the President of Colombia, just not in curls like Tuesday.

The Spanish Queen actually wore the same blue 2nd Skin CO. gown and the same tiara, with her hair in an elegant bun, to the state banquet hosted by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in April of 2024

  • Bend a knee like Beckham: Soccer star is knighted by King Charles III

    [ad_1]

LONDON — When it came time to receive his knighthood, soccer great David Beckham knew what to do. He bent his knee like, well, Beckham.

King Charles III tapped his shoulders with the blade of a sword and “Becks” was transformed to Sir David Beckham.

“This is without doubt my proudest moment,” Beckham said after Tuesday’s ceremony at Windsor Castle. “I’ve been very obviously lucky in my career to have won what I’ve won and done what I’ve done, but to receive an honor like this, of a knight, is beyond anything that I ever thought that I would receive.”

The distinction marks the pinnacle of Beckham’s effort to rehabilitate his image following events that at times alienated him from fans during a long and distinguished career. He also has had a very public persona as a fashion model, husband to Victoria “Posh” Beckham of the Spice Girls and “Bend it Like Beckham” movie muse.

The 50-year-old was knighted for his services to sport and charity, having partnered with UNICEF, the U.N.’s children’s fund, for two decades and campaigned with a charity working to eradicate malaria. He also played a pivotal role in London being awarded the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, author of “The Remains of the Day” who previously was knighted, was recognized in Tuesday’s ceremony as a Companion of Honor for literature. Renowned musicals singer and actor Elaine Paige was given a damehood, the female equivalent of a knighthood.

Beckham is the only English soccer player to score at three different World Cups, and his career included the triple-winning campaign of 1999, when Manchester United won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League.

With 115 appearances for the England national team, Beckham is third on the all-time list. He also captained the side on 59 occasions.

After leaving Manchester United in 2003 — a move that devastated fans — Beckham played for Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain. He now co-owns the Major League Soccer team Inter Miami.

His career hit a low point at the 1998 World Cup in France, where Beckham was widely vilified for his petulant kick of Argentina player Diego Simeone, which saw him sent off and left the team short a player. Many fans blamed him for England’s exit.

In 2023’s Netflix documentary series “Beckham,” he described the abuse he experienced, which included an effigy of him hanging from a noose outside a London pub.

“I knew it was bad at the time, but going over that whole thing was quite a tough one,” he told The Associated Press at the time.

Beckham’s knighthood was announced in June during the king’s birthday honors list. The awards, which are also given out at New Year’s, recognize contributions to British life.

  • Royal prerogative: King Charles III banishes Andrew to buttress the House of Windsor’s foundations

    [ad_1]

No one is bigger than the monarchy. Not even the king’s brother.

In the end, that reality spelled the end of Andrew’s life as a prince of the realm.

As details of Andrew’s links to the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein continued to dribble out and Parliament raised questions about his rent-free residence at a sprawling country house near Windsor Castle, King Charles III moved Thursday to shield the monarchy from any further revelations.

In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace, the king said he had taken steps to strip his brother of all his titles and honors, including the one he has held since birth — prince. From now on, the scandal-plagued British royal will be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

Andrew is also being forced to move out of Royal Lodge, the 30-room mansion near Windsor Castle where he has lived for more than 20 years.

“The monarchy needed to draw the thickest line they could between Andrew and the rest of the royal family,’’ said Craig Prescott, an expert on constitutional law and the monarchy at Royal Holloway, University of London. “And he’s precisely done that.”

The king’s decision came after the announcement earlier this month that Andrew had agreed to stop using the titles failed to stanch the flood of tawdry stories that threaten to weaken support for the monarchy. Far from ending the media frenzy, the earlier move spurred calls from some members of Parliament that Andrew be formally stripped of his titles and evicted from Royal Lodge.

That raised the prospect of a parliamentary debate on Andrew’s conduct that would have subjected the royal family to even more unwanted publicity.

Andrew’s disgrace comes as Charles, who is 76 and undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, works to resolve stubborn problems and buttress the foundations of the monarchy for his elder son, Prince William, to inherit.

“This, I think, was a very clear statement of what had to be done to get the house in order (now) and also going forward for the future,” said George Gross, a royal expert at King’s College London. “That makes life easier for Prince William … I think that’s also part of it. But it felt inevitable.”

While the king’s decision may help shield the monarchy from the fallout from the scandal, it won’t end Andrew’s problems.

The latest round of stories about Andrew was triggered by the publication of a memoir written by Virginia Giuffre, who alleged that she was trafficked by Epstein and had sex with Andrew when she was 17. Giuffre, an American living in Australia, took her own life earlier this year.

Her brother, Sky Roberts, on Thursday lauded his sister’s long fight to expose Epstein and Andrew, but continued to call for the king’s brother to be prosecuted.

Andrew has repeatedly denied having sex with Giuffre or committing any crimes.

Historian Andrew Lownie, author of a recent biography of Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, said he believes there are grounds to investigate allegations ranging from sex trafficking to misconduct in public office.

“I don’t think it’s the end of it, I think there are many more disclosures to come,” author of “Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York,” told Britain’s Press Association. “But at least they’re taking some decisive action.”

Andrew, 65, is the second son of the late Queen Elizabeth II. He spent more than 20 years as a Royal Navy officer before leaving to take up his royal duties in 2001.

He has been the subject of tabloid stories stretching back to at least 2007, when he sold a house near Windsor Castle for 20% over the 15 million pound asking price. The buyer was reported to be Timur Kulibayev, son-in-law of Nursultan Nazarbayev, then-president of Kazakhstan, raising concerns that the deal was an attempt to buy influence in Britain.

Those allegations, coupled with reported links to a son of former Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi, led to Andrew being stripped of his role as Britain’s special envoy for international trade and investment.

But royal experts believe Andrew was often shielded from the full weight of his scandals because of his position as the queen’s favorite child.

That became untenable in November 2019, after Andrew gave a disastrous interview to the BBC in an effort to counter media reports about his friendship with Epstein. He was widely criticized for failing to show empathy for Epstein’s victims and for offering unbelievable explanations for his friendship with the disgraced financier.

Soon after the interview aired, Andrew was forced to give up all of his public duties and charity roles.

Now Charles is severing his brother’s remaining ties to the institution of the monarchy. The Royal Lodge has been a particularly sore point, with Andrew until now rejecting the king’s entreaties to give up his 75-year lease on the property. He will now live at the king’s private estate at Sandringham in eastern England.

Prescott, the constitutional expert, said Andrew’s banishment should be seen as part of a transition in the monarchy that began after Elizabeth’s death in 2022.

As long as the queen was alive, people were reluctant to criticize the monarchy because it was seen as personally criticizing the queen, who became a revered figure during her 70-year reign.

Charles has never had that same status and he recognizes that the crown has to be accountable to the people and their representatives in Parliament, Prescott said.

“This is part of the transition of the monarchy becoming more like a typical public institution, capable of being scrutinized by Parliament in one way or another,” he said.

“There was public demand and parliamentary demand for the king to do something,” Prescott added. “And he’s done it.”

  • William and Kate win privacy case against French magazine over family holiday photos

    [ad_1]

LONDON — The Prince and Princess of Wales have won a legal case against a French magazine that published photos of the couple and their children on a skiing holiday, the royals’ office said Thursday.

William and Kate took action against Paris Match after it ran photos in April of them and their children George, Charlotte and Louis on a break in the French Alps. They were shown on the slopes and relaxing on a chalet balcony.

The latest edition of Paris Match includes a notice saying that a judge at the Nanterre Judicial Court had found that the images and an accompanying article “had infringed the respect due to their private life and the rights the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children have on their image.”

The couple’s Kensington Palace office said the magazine had published “a grossly intrusive article and long-lens paparazzi photographs of their private family holiday.”

“The Prince and Princess of Wales are committed to protecting their private family time and ensuring that their children can grow up without undue scrutiny and interference,” the palace said in a statement. “They will not hesitate to take such action as is necessary to enforce those boundaries.”

The British media has largely abided by an agreement to give George, 12, Charlotte, 10 and 7-year-old Louis privacy in return for occasional authorized images. A similar arrangement was in place for William and his brother Prince Harry when they were younger.

International outlets have sometimes followed other rules.

William and Kate sued the French magazine Closer for publishing photos in 2012 of a topless Kate, snapped while the couple was holidaying at a private villa in southern France. After a long legal battle the royal couple was awarded tens of thousands of euros (dollars) in damages for breach of privacy.

  • 11 celebrities you didn’t know were royal descendants

    [ad_1]

While many of our favourite celebrities are like royalty in our eyes, you may be surprised to learn just how many of them are related to actual royalty. What’s more, many of them share common ancestors, meaning some of Hollywood’s biggest stars are also related too.

From the two pop queens linked to Queen Camilla, to the American celeb thought to be the closest American relative to the late Queen Elizabeth II, these stars’ family trees stretch across centuries of European history, revealing a web of royal connections you definitely never expected. HELLO! takes a look at the famous faces you never knew were secretly of royal descent…

    Beyoncé

It seems pretty fitting that Beyoncé – regularly referred to as Queen Bey – is related to a real-life queen. The Texas Hold ‘Em singer is Queen Elizabeth II‘s 25th cousin once removed, connected by their shared ancestor, Henry II, who ruled in the 12th century. The singer is no stranger to rubbing shoulders with royalty either – she shared a heartfelt meeting with the Duchess of Sussex at the premiere of Disney‘s The Lion King in 2019, telling Meghan, “We love you guys”.

    Madonna

The “Queen of Pop” is more than just music royalty – she’s actually related to Queen Camilla. Madonna and the Queen are ninth cousins once removed, and are both descendants of Zacharie Cloutier, a 17th century French-Canadian who was a founding figure in the Quebec colony. A master carpenter who was a “bourgeois seigneur” – a person of considerable wealth – Zacharie and his wife Xainte Dupont have thousands of descendants today, and we’re still hoping for a Madonna and Camilla meet-up.

    Ralph Fiennes

He may have only played a king in The Return, but it turns out actor Ralph Fiennes is actually the eighth cousin of King Charles himself. The Harry Potter actor and The King are both descendants of King James II of Scotland, who succeeded to the Scottish throne at six-years-old during the 1400s. Ralph told People magazine about the time Charles visited the set of the James Bond film Spectre, revealing that his distant relative was “very charming” and “warm”.

    Celine Dion

Another one of Queen Camilla’s star-studded relatives is Celine Dion. The My Heart Will Go On singer and the Queen are both related to Jean Guyon, a Frenchman who also settled in Quebec, making the pair 10th cousins once removed. She’s also another relative of Zacharie Cloutier, which also makes her ninth cousins once removed with Madonna – this family tree has no shortage of star power!

    Johnny Depp

During an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? in 2011, Johnny Depp discovered that he’s actually related to Queen Elizabeth II. A genealogist traced Johnny’s lineage back over 500 years, and discovered the pair share a common ancestor, King Edward III, who reigned during the Medieval period. This makes the Pirates of the Caribbean actor and the late Queen 20th cousins, and though they’ve never formally met, the pair briefly made contact on the set of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow in the ’90s, Sir Michael Gambon told The Telegraph. The Queen came riding past with Harry Herbert, the 17th Earl of Pembroke, with Johnny reportedly asking afterwards, “Was that the Queen?”

    Ellen DeGeneres

Former daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres never got the chance to sit down with the Princess of Wales – which would’ve been a fabulous chat, considering the pair are related. Kate and the famous funnywoman are 15th cousins, sharing a common ancestor in Sir Thomas Fairfax, an army officer during the English Civil War, and his wife Anges Gascoigne. Ellen found this fact out shortly before the Prince and Princess of Wales’ 2011 wedding, jokingly telling Extra TV’s Terri Seymour that she had a “beautiful outfit picked out” for the pair’s lavish nuptials.

    Guy Ritchie

The Princess of Wales is also cousins with another famous celebrity – sixth cousins with film director Guy Ritchie, to be exact. The pair share a common ancestor in David Martineau, a surgeon in the 18th century who was part of a well-known Unitarian family from Norwich. Kate and Guy are also friends in real life, with the Snatch director scoring an invite to her wedding to Prince William in 2011 – sorry, Ellen!

    Kit Harington

He’s more than just the heir to the Iron Throne – Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington is related to real-life royalty. Kit’s paternal eight-times-great-grandfather was King Charles II of England, meaning he shares an ancestor, King Charles I (Charles II’s grandfather), with the current King Charles III – if you can keep up with all those Charleses, that makes Kit and the King roughly 9th or 10th cousins.

    Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch may have just been acting as King Richard III in The Hollow Crown, but turns out he’s actually related to him. Benedict is the second cousin 16 times removed of Richard, the last king of the Plantagenet dynasty and the last monarch to die in Battle. Cumberbatch’s family connection earned him an invite to read a poem at the monarch’s reburial ceremony at Leicester Cathedral in 2015. The Sherlock actor is reportedly also connected to other royals like Queen Elizabeth II and Lady Jane Grey; he met the former queen when she presented him with a CBE in 2015, an experience he described to the BBC as “extraordinary” and “nerve-wracking”.

    Hilary Duff

Did you know singer Hilary Duff is reportedly the American celebrity most closely related to Queen Elizabeth II? The pair share an ancestor in King Edward III – the same as Johnny Depp – while Hilary is also descended from Robert the Bruce, who was the King of Scotland in the early 14th century. This makes the former Lizzie McGuire star and the late Queen 18th cousins, as well as distantly related to the Pirates of the Caribbean actor.

    Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal

Descended from a Swedish noble family, brother-sister acting duo Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal are 19th cousins of the late Queen Elizabeth II through their shared ancestor, King Edward III of England. If you’re keeping up (it’s quite the family web), that also makes Jake and Maggie related to Johnny Depp and Hilary Duff. Talk about a family tree packed full of both acting royalty and actual royalty!

Prince Harry and Prince William‘s aunt, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, has been injured after suffering from a fall. Lady Sarah, 70, who is the older sister of Princess Diana, is said to be recovering from a “really bad fall” she sustained in September. The news was revealed by her brother, Earl Charles Spencer, who recently appeared on Gyles Brandreth’s Rosebud podcast

Speaking about his older sister, who once dated the then-Prince Charles, he said: “Sarah, who is nearly a decade older than me, who was always in trouble, she’s quite punchy. She’s still riding, and she’s had a really bad fall in the last month and has been in hospital for a long time.”

Despite her fall, Charles joked that his older sister has been a “handful” for her doctors to deal with. “I think, [she] was quite a handful as a patient, because the said doctor said to my brother-in-law, ‘She’s quite a character, isn’t she?’ which I think is code for, ‘Could you take her home?’”, he joked, referring to Lady Sarah’s husband of 45 years, Neil McCorquodale.

Who is Diana’s sister, Lady Sarah?

Lady Sarah McCorquodale is known for being the older sister of the late Princess Diana and for her brief dating history with the then-Prince Charles. She’s the oldest of the four Spencer children, followed by Lady Jane Fellowes, the late Princess Diana and Earl Charles Spencer. While Lady Sarah doesn’t spend much time in the royal spotlight, over the years, she has shown her support for both of her royal nephews, Prince Harry and Prince William, and attended both of their weddings.

Then-Prince Charles and then-Lady Sarah Spencer were once romantically linked

Before Princess Diana met the then-Prince Charles, her older sister briefly dated her future husband. Sarah and Charles were introduced at the annual Royal Ascot party in 1977 when Sarah was 22 and he was 28. Sarah Bradford wrote in Diana: Finally, the Complete Story about the pair’s initial attraction: “Prince Charles enjoyed Sarah’s sparkiness and irreverent wit and they made each other laugh.”

However, the relationship would only be short-lived after she gave an interview to her two journalist friends: Nigel Nelson and James Whittaker. In the interview given to The Sunday People in 2013, Sarah reportedly said to James: “She declared she would not marry Charles if he were the dustman or the King of England. That was good news from where I was sitting, and Sarah seemed delighted I was so keen to share it with the nation.”

Sarah went on to set up her younger sister, the late Princess Diana, with Charles. Lady Sarah married writer Neil Edmund McCorquodale on 17 May 1980 – the same year Charles started dating Diana. They had three children together called Emily, George, and Ceila.

  • Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet show off auburn locks during Halloween outing

    [ad_1]

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex delighted royal fans this weekend after Meghan Markle shared an adorable new video of her family enjoying a day of festive fun at a pumpkin patch. The clip, set to ‘California Dreamin” by The Mamas & the Papas, showed Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, soaking in the autumn air as they explored the grounds with their parents and grandmother, Doria Ragland. The family outing offered a rare glimpse into the Sussexes’ relaxed California life – and we couldn’t help but notice the children’s beautiful auburn hair.

    Halloween fun

Sharing the clip on her Instagram on Sunday, the Duchess captioned the post: “Happy Sunday.” The video opened with sweeping shots of the pumpkin fields and a friendly scarecrow before cutting to Archie dashing through a maze. Lilibet, dressed in a cosy matching set, enjoyed a ride in a rustic wooden cart pulled by her mum, surrounded by hay bales and tractors. In another heartwarming moment, she could be seen playing with a tyre filled with white and yellow mini pumpkins, her auburn waves falling down her back.

Both children appear to have inherited their father’s signature red hair. Prince Harry himself has often joked about the “Spencer gene” running strong in his family. Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2023, Harry said: “I genuinely thought that if Meghan and I had kids, there’s no way the ginger gene would stand up to my wife’s genes – but I was wrong!”

When HELLO! caught up with the Duke at the 2024 WellChild Awards, he told our Chief Content Officer, Sophie Vokes-Dudgeon, that Archie and Lilibet had been “blessed with their mother’s thick hair”, adding that “it won’t be long until Lili can sit on hers.”

The video also captured sweet glimpses of Meghan and Harry holding hands as they watched Archie and Lili run through the rows of pumpkins. The Duchess looked effortlessly chic in a checked utility jacket, dark trousers and sturdy boots – perfectly suited for the countryside setting – while Harry kept things casual in jeans, a hoodie and a baseball cap. Also joining in the fun was Meghan’s mother, Doria, who was filmed trying her hand at pumpkin carving with her grandchildren and son-in-law Harry.

    Meghan’s autumnal look

This wasn’t the only autumnal look the Duchess was spotted wearing this weekend, as Meghan also stepped out in a low-key autumn style on 25 October. The 44-year-old was spotted attending a talk titled “Compare Notes on Creating a Home That’s Filled With Joy” at Godmother’s Bookstore in Summerland, California. The Duchess embraced the season in a chic tonal look – the Wool Wide Leg Pant in Fondant and matching silk tank from sustainable brand Cuyana.

  • Prince Harry, Meghan join call for ban on development of AI ‘superintelligence’

    [ad_1]

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have joined prominent computer scientists, economists, artists, evangelical Christian leaders and American conservative commentators Steve Bannon and Glenn Beck to call for a ban on AI “superintelligence” that threatens humanity.

The letter, released Wednesday by a politically and geographically diverse group of public figures, is squarely aimed at tech giants like Google, OpenAI and Meta Platforms that are racing each other to build a form of artificial intelligence designed to surpass humans at many tasks.

    The 30-word statement says:

“We call for a prohibition on the development of superintelligence, not lifted before there is broad scientific consensus that it will be done safely and controllably, and strong public buy-in.”

In a preamble, the letter notes that AI tools may bring health and prosperity, but alongside those tools, “many leading AI companies have the stated goal of building superintelligence in the coming decade that can significantly outperform all humans on essentially all cognitive tasks. This has raised concerns, ranging from human economic obsolescence and disempowerment, losses of freedom, civil liberties, dignity, and control, to national security risks and even potential human extinction.”

Prince Harry added in a personal note that “the future of AI should serve humanity, not replace it. I believe the true test of progress will be not how fast we move, but how wisely we steer. There is no second chance.”

Signing alongside the Duke of Sussex was his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

“This is not a ban or even a moratorium in the usual sense,” wrote another signatory, Stuart Russell, an AI pioneer and computer science professor at the University of California, Berkeley. “It’s simply a proposal to require adequate safety measures for a technology that, according to its developers, has a significant chance to cause human extinction. Is that too much to ask?”

Also signing were AI pioneers Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, co-winners of the Turing Award, computer science’s top prize. Hinton also won a Nobel Prize in physics last year. Both have been vocal in bringing attention to the dangers of a technology they helped create.

But the list also has some surprises, including Bannon and Beck, in an attempt by the letter’s organizers at the nonprofit Future of Life Institute to appeal to President Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again movement even as Trump’s White House staff has sought to reduce limits to AI development in the U.S.

Also on the list are Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak; British billionaire Richard Branson; the former Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen, who served under Republican and Democratic administrations; and Democratic foreign policy expert Susan Rice, who was national security adviser to President Barack Obama.

Former Irish President Mary Robinson and several British and European parliamentarians signed, as did actors Stephen Fry and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and musician will.i.am, who has otherwise embraced AI in music creation.

“Yeah, we want specific AI tools that can help cure diseases, strengthen national security, etc.,” wrote Gordon-Levitt, whose wife Tasha McCauley served on OpenAI’s board of directors before the upheaval that led to CEO Sam Altman’s temporary ouster in 2023. “But does AI also need to imitate humans, groom our kids, turn us all into slop junkies and make zillions of dollars serving ads? Most people don’t want that.”

The letter is likely to provoke ongoing debates between the AI research community about the likelihood of superhuman AI, the technical paths to reach it and how dangerous it could be.

“In the past, it’s mostly been the nerds versus the nerds,” said Max Tegmark, president of the Future of Life Institute and a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “I feel what we’re really seeing here is how the criticism has gone very mainstream.”

Confounding the broader debates is that the same companies that are striving toward what some call superintelligence and others call artificial general intelligence, or AGI, are also sometimes inflating the capabilities of their products, which can make them more marketable and have contributed to concerns about an AI bubble. OpenAI was recently met with ridicule from mathematicians and AI scientists when its researcher claimed ChatGPT had figured out unsolved math problems — when what it really did was find and summarize what was already online.

“There’s a ton of stuff that’s overhyped and you need to be careful as an investor, but that doesn’t change the fact that — zooming out — AI has gone much faster in the last four years than most people predicted,” Tegmark said.

Tegmark’s group was also behind a March 2023 letter — still in the dawn of a commercial AI boom — that called on tech giants to pause the development of more powerful AI models temporarily. None of the major AI companies heeded that call. And the 2023 letter’s most prominent signatory, Elon Musk, was at the same time quietly founding his own AI startup to compete with those he wanted to take a 6-month pause.

Asked if he reached out to Musk again this time, Tegmark said he wrote to the CEOs of all major AI developers in the U.S. but didn’t expect them to sign.

“I really empathize for them, frankly, because they’re so stuck in this race to the bottom that they just feel an irresistible pressure to keep going and not get overtaken by the other guy,” Tegmark said. “I think that’s why it’s so important to stigmatize the race to superintelligence, to the point where the U.S. government just steps in.”
