  • Signs of rodents, dirty conditions found at Plano restaurants; 1 permit revoked

    Four Plano restaurants were closed during Jan. 18-31 health inspections, and one of them had its permit revoked for unsanitary conditions, according to data from the city compiled by the Star-Telegram.

    The city of Plano scores restaurants on a 100-point system, with 100 considered a perfect score and 70 extremely poor.

    Maht Gaek at 151 W. Spring Creek Parkway scored 29 on Jan. 22. Equipment wasn’t properly sanitized, food was prepared with dirty knives, raw onions were stored next to the mop sink and the grill and stove area were covered with heavy debris. The inspector also found a minor leak in the sewage pipe under a sink.

    The city closed Maht Gaek and revoked the establishment’s health permit until the violations could be corrected and a follow-up inspection conducted.

    Kolache Factory at 1217 Coit Road scored 51 on Jan. 29. The facility didn’t have a thermometer available to measure food temperature, only hot water was available at one of the hand-washing sinks and expired chicken and beef were found in the cooler.

    The establishment was temporarily closed pending a follow-up inspection.

    Anjappar at 4940 McDermott Road received a nearly perfect score of 99 on Jan. 20 but was temporarily closed due to not having a dumpster on site. The facility has since reopened.

    Jimmy’s Restaurant and Catering at 6300 Independence Parkway voluntarily closed on Jan. 20 so employees could deep-clean the facility and correct outstanding violations. The restaurant was not given a score.

    Eleven food establishments, not including Maht Gaek and Kolache Factory, scored below 80.

    Cafe Max at 6149 Windhaven Parkway scored 70 on Jan. 30. The inspector noticed employees not properly washing their hands, a dirty deli slicer and undated food in the cooler.

    Bamboo House Dallas at 2301 North Central Expressway scored 74 on Jan. 21. Employee food handler cards were expired, insect traps were hanging from the ceiling in the food prep area and raw meat juice was found in the bottom of the freezer.

    Indopak Supermarket at 2060 W. Spring Creek Parkway scored 74 on Jan. 29. There was no food service permit posted, cooked rice was stored next to raw chicken in the cooler and clean dishes were found in the mop sink.

    Lima Taverna at 621 W. Plano Parkway scored 75 on Jan. 30. A certified food manager was working without a hair restraint, a refrigerator didn’t close properly due to a broken handle and no sanitizing solution was available to clean food contact surfaces.

    Padmas Kitchen at 930 W. Parker Road scored 75 on Jan. 29. There was no soap at any of the hand sinks, undated food was found in the cooler and some unlabeled medication was stored above open food.

    Rokhat Grill at 2205 North Central Expressway scored 75 on Jan. 21. Several employees hadn’t completed an accredited food handler course, raw beef was stored above ready-to-eat vegetables and the walls and floor behind the grill line were dirty.

    Hello India at 8740 Ohio Drive scored 76 on Jan. 21. The inspector found some dented cans, no soap or paper towels at one of the hand sinks and chicken and rice at an unsafe temperature.

    McNeal’s Tavern at 1422 K Ave. scored 78 on Jan. 20. The inspector noted rusty shelves in the walk-in cooler, a fly strip directly over a food prep area and an employee washing their hands at the warewashing sink.

    151 Coffee at 1151 Preston Road scored 79 on 130. An employee didn’t properly wash their hands, none of the staff had undergone food-handler training and the person in charge didn’t have a certified food manager certificate.

    Chef Sun’s Noodle and Dumpling at 3131 Custer Road scored 79 on Jan. 29. The inspector found a dirty can opener blade, unlabeled chemical spray bottles and buckets of soy sauce stored on the floor.

    La Popular Panaderia at 2504 K Ave. scored 79 on Jan. 29. Raw chicken was stored above ready-to-eat salsa, knives were put away without being properly cleaned and some cooking sauce was dispensed out of unlabled containers.

    No evidence of roaches were found during this round of inspections, but rodent droppings were observed at one facility.

    Awesome Chinese Cuisine at 1520 Independence Parkway scored 82 on Jan. 22. Some employees started preparing food without washing their hands, a cooked whole chicken was hanging on an unclean storage shelf and rodent droppings were found on the cook line.

  • 1 Plano restaurant closed for ‘gross insanitary conditions,’ health report shows

    One Plano restaurant was closed and roaches and rodent droppings were found at others during recent health inspections, according to data from the city compiled by the Star-Telegram.

    The city of Plano scores restaurants and other businesses that serve food on a 100-point system. A score of 100 is considered a perfect score and 70 is extremely poor.

    The report includes health violations from Dec. 28 through Jan. 10 and 139 restaurant inspections.

    India Meals Curry Point, at 2108 Dallas Parkway Suite 228 was temporarily closed with a score of 62 after health inspectors observed “gross insanitary conditions.” The restaurant was asked to remain closed until written authorization to reopen was provided by the environmental health division. The restaurant scored a 95 on their follow-up.

    Rodent droppings were found at

    Kuppanna, at 1301 Custer Road Suite 510, health inspectors observed more than five rodent droppings on the floor in a dry storage area. The restaurant scored 82.

    Dead roaches were found at

    Mauro’s Grill And Cafe, 2719 W. 15th St., health inspectors observed five dead roaches under the front counter. The restaurant scored 79.

    Seven other eateries scored below 80:

    • Kooksoo, at 100 Legacy Drive Suite 103. Score: 72.
    • Sucre Cafe, at 6100 K Ave. Suite 104D. Score: 72.
    • TKS Chinese Cuisine, at 3829 W Spring Creek Parkway, Suite 105. Score: 76.
    • Wings Kebab, at 141 W Spring Creek Parkway, Suite 401. Score: 76.
    • Babahan Uyghur Cafe, at 240 Legacy Drive, Suite 110. Score: 77.
    • Ssam King, at 1861 N Central Expressway Suite 125. Score: 79.
    • We’Re Dough, at 3421 E Renner Road, Suite 108. Score: 79.

    A repeat violator, TKS Chinese Cuisine, at 3829 W. Spring Creek Parkway Suite, had multiple repeat violations on both their routine and follow-up inspections. The restaurant was cited by health inspectors for improper food thawing. They scored 93 after a follow-up inspection.

  • Expired food, moldy ice, rodent droppings in Crowley restaurant inspections

    Rodent droppings, expired food and moldy ice were found at Crowley restaurants during recent health inspections, reports show.

    Crowley health inspections are handled by Tarrant County Public Health. There were 14 inspections conducted between Oct. 12 and Oct. 25, according to data from the county compiled by the Star-Telegram.

    Tarrant County Public Health has transitioned to a new inspection report format. The highest possible score under the new system is 100, and 70 is considered extremely poor. Restaurants and other establishments that serve food scoring below 70 require a follow-up inspection.

    One restaurant had a low score during this inspection cycle.

    • Pandan Thai Kitchen, at 448 E. Main St., scored 79 after health inspectors observed cross-contamination, buildup of residue and debris on equipment and floors, and the kitchen staff’s food handler cards weren’t available.

    Rodents droppings were observed at Quick Pantry at 800 N. Crowley Road. The store also had expired cans of food on sales shelves, and inspectors observed black organic matter on the interior of the ice machine. The store scored 95.

    In addition to Quick Pantry, greenish or blackish organic matter were observed on the interior of the ice machines at:

    • McCloud Grocery Inc, at 928 W. Main St.. Score 97.
    • Our Place Restaurant Too, at 326 E. Main St. Score 85.
    • Boo Rays Of New Orleans, at 316 E. Main St. Score 89.
    • Crowley Nursing And Rehabilitation, at 920 E. FM 1187. Score: 94.

    Cans of expired food on shelves for service were also found at DJs Food Mart at 904 S. Crowley Road. Score: 95.

  • Maggots, rodent droppings found during Tarrant County health inspections

    One Tarrant County restaurant was closed during Oct. 12-25 health inspections because of insufficient hot water, and rodent droppings were found at several other facilities, according to data from the county compiled by the Star-Telegram.

    NYC Bagel And Deli at 3930 Glade Road in Colleyville scored 80 on Oct. 23. The inspector noticed slimy matter and black grime inside the ice machine, and cockroaches, maggots and ants on the floor. None of the sinks had an adequate supply of hot water, and the facility voluntarily closed until the problem could be fixed.

    NYC Bagel and Deli scored 87 on a follow-up inspection the next day and was allowed to reopen. The establishment is required to find a new pest control service because of the ongoing problem with ants, maggots and roaches on the floor of the dish area.

    Tarrant County Public Health has transitioned to a new inspection report format. The highest possible score under the new system is 100, and 70 is considered extremely poor. Restaurants and other establishments that serve food scoring below 70 require a follow-up inspection. No establishments scored below 70 during this round of inspections. Wok N Roll Express at 2101 Hall Johnson Road in Grapevine scored 72 on Oct. 24. There were no food handler cards available, some raw chicken was stored above the noodles and the area around the outdoor grease trap was dirty. The restaurant inside Hareli Fresh Market at 2901 E. State Highway 114 in Southlake scored 73 on Oct. 15. Several boxes of food were on the floor of the walk-in cooler, the can opener was dirty and some food was stored uncovered or without a date label. Dirty Cajun Seafood Kitchen at 2400 Airport Freeway in Bedford scored 78 on Oct. 21. The restaurant’s health permit wasn’t posted, many food items were without labels and dates and the dishwasher wasn’t dispensing sanitizer. La Real Michoacana 11 at 615 Bellaire Drive in Hurst scored 78 on Oct. 16. One of its permits was expired and there were drain flies in the kitchen area. The facility received a perfect score of 100 during an Oct. 23 follow-up inspection. Pandan Thai Kitchen at 448 E Main St. in Crowley scored 79 on Oct. 16. Some perishable food items were stored without a date label, an open box of broccoli was on the floor under the hand sink and the kitchen staff’s food handler cards weren’t available. Several facilities reported problems with rodents. La Guera Micheladas Mix at 5724 Jacksboro Highway in Sansom Park scored 93 on Oct. 16. The inspector found rodent droppings in a cabinet with single-use coffee cups and the facility was unable to provide pest control service documents. Benbrook Quickway at 955 Winscott Road in Benbrook scored 95 on Oct. 20. The inspector noted possible rodent droppings in the cabinets underneath the popcorn and soda machines. Quick Pantry at 800 N. Crowley Road in Crowley scored 95 on Oct. 17. The inspector observed black organic matter inside the ice machine and rodent droppings in cabinets throughout the store. Tacomigo at 781 W. Bedford Euless Road in Hurst scored 88 on Oct. 15. The inspector found chewed insulation near a hole in the wall and instructed the facility to get rid of any rats and their debris.
