Robert Pattinson’s looks were called into question by studio executives ahead of his casting in the Twilight film franchise.
The English actor was cast in the star-making role of vampire Edward Cullen in the films based on the books by Stephanie Meyers.
But the studio was not sure if he was good-looking enough to be cast, according to director Catherine Hardwicke, who revealed a conversation she had with studio executives after they met Pattinson in person.

“They call me back and go, ‘do you think you can make this guy look good?’” she said on Josh Horowitz’s podcast,Happy Sad Confused.
The director revealed Pattinson had turned to the meeting in a stained shirt, which was “so funny,” but she promised the studio bosses that they would give the actor a makeover and would start working out.
“He’s going to be gorgeous,” she tried to assure the executives. “But they didn’t believe it at first.”
Hardwicke also opened up on how Pattinson felt he was not good-looking enough for the role in Twilight.
“He’s a very modest and humble person and self-deprecating in a way,” she explained.
“So he was nervous about, you know, ‘am I living up to the book? Am I gorgeous enough for the book?’”
Hardwick added: “I tried to give him a lot of love and encouragement. And we did, of course, do a makeover on him too. I mean, the hairstyle, the eyebrows, even the teeth. He started working out with a trainer, he put a lot of effort in.”
Pattinson, 37, previously starred in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as Cedric Diggory before rising to fame in 2008 in the first Twilight film.
He has since starred as the Caped Crusader in the 2022 film The Batman.
Last year, director David Cronenberg sent Twilight fans into a frenzy when he suggested the potential of Pattinson reuniting with his co-star and ex-girlfriend, Kristen Stewart, on a new film project.
“It was Robert who actually introduced me to Kristen. They have developed beautifully, separately, as actors,” Cronenberg said in an interview with World of Reel.
“Making arthouse movies and successfully carrying that off. Kristen and I had a great time and Rob and I had a great time. For me, yeah, I can definitely think of a movie, or idea, that would be great to have them both together,” adding that at the stage it was still an idea.
It was revealed this week that Pattinson is expecting his first child with partner, Suki Waterhouse.

The insider did express that the two “are definitely into each other” and are dating while Pattinson is in London filming The King. “Rob likes to have fun when he has breaks in-between filming and him and Suki have a great time together,” the source added.

Pattinson essentially confirms that he’s quarantining with Waterhouse during an interview for GQ‘s June cover. According to the article, Pattinson has been sequestered “with his girlfriend” in the London apartment “the Batman folks rented for him” while production on the film is paused.That reporting is line with the DailyMail, which spots the couple leaving a grocery store in Notting Hill around mid-April. A source gave E! a rare and brief update on how Waterhouse and Pattinson are doing three years into dating. They’re still together and doing great, naturally.
“They are very solid in their relationship,” the source said. During the rare public appearances they do together, they’re “always just totally joined at the hip. You can tell he’s completely in love with her,” the source said.

Pattinson later talked on Jimmy Kimmel Live! about Waterhouse’s emotional reaction watching The Batman, and how it made him more terrified of its release.“It was really her reaction that kind of changed the entire thing because I’m pretty sure she’s not normally into watching superhero movies,” he said, via Entertainment Tonight. “And just seeing that it was capturing her attention the entire time and then she held my hand and touched it [to her face] and I could feel a little tear. Robert Pattinson certainly knows a thing or two about Hollywood’s ridiculous male body standards. In an interview for the cover of ES magazine, the Batman and Twilight actor railed against the pressure on actors to look a certain way in the entertainment industry, admitting to partaking in the “extraordinarily addictive” and “insidious” practice of counting calories.
“It’s very, very easy to fall into that pattern as well, even if you’re just watching your calorie intake,” he told ES. “It’s extraordinarily addictive—and you don’t quite realize how insidious it is until it’s too late.”
Pattinson went on to claim that while he’s never struggled with his own body image, he’s “tried every fad you can think of” when it comes to dieting, including [checks notes] eating only potatoes for a fortnight. “I once ate nothing but potatoes for two weeks as a detox,” revealed Pattinson. “Just boiled potatoes and Himalayan pink salt. Apparently, it’s a cleanse…you definitely lose weight.”
To his credit, Pattinson has admitted to fibbing on the record. “I definitely do get a certain high from it,” he told Willem Dafoe in a 2018 article for Interview magazine, with the two promoting their upcoming film, The Lighthouse. “There’s a little gremlin inside of me that thinks, Just say something shocking. You’re only here for a few minutes, say something terrible. There’s a kind of perverse glee I get from that. But I’ve given my publicist a number of heart attacks.”
So we’d say it’s best to take Pattinson and his boiled potatoes with a healthy grain of salt. That said, he did mention another, more conventional diet he’s tried. “I tried to do keto once. I was like, Oh, there’s a diet where you just eat charcuterie boards and cheese all the time?” he told ES. “But I didn’t realize that you can’t have beer, as it completely defeats the purpose.”
Everything in the DC Universe is kind of up in the air right now. Fortunately, that doesn’t include the follow-up to Matt Reeves’ highly-praised The Batman. Despite the massive restructuring going on after the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery, it seems like this franchise is safe.
One couldn’t be blamed for being a bit worried, after major projects like Wonder Woman 3 were shelved. Ever since James Gunn took over the helm at DC, shakeups have been happening left and right. Henry Cavill won’t be returning as Superman, and Black Adam is no longer the central figure that the DC Universe will be built around. They’re working with a new 10-year plan.
The Batman was an immediate hit, bringing in about $770 million dollars worldwide. It also laid the foundation for a new Batman franchise, once again taking place in a grounded and gritty universe. Luckily, it felt fresh enough to bring people out to the theaters in droves. But what of a sequel?
Reeves and others have been working on a few different spin-offs, none of which have come to fruition first. First of all, is a spinoff TV series about the Penguin starring Colin Farrell. The second is a spinoff which was initially about the Gotham City Police Department, although recently, it may have morphed into a show about Arkham Asylum. But none of these are really sequels involving Batman himself.
While he was pretty tight-lipped about plot details or a release timeline, Matt Reeves recently spoke with a writer at Collider. When asked if he was shooting any films this year, he replied, almost hesitant to reveal much…
I’m not going to answer that question, but we are working on a movie. I’ll put it to you that way. We’re deep in it and my partner and I are writing, Mattson [Tomlin] and I are writing, and it’s really exciting, and I’m really excited about what we’re doing.
He also shared his admiration for his lead actor, Robert Pattinson, saying: that he was “really excited to be doing that with Rob, because I just think he’s such a special person and actor.”
The next DC movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, opens in theaters on March 17.
