  • Robbinsdale School Board votes to close 4 buildings amid financial struggles

    [ad_1]

After months of debate and emotional testimony, the Robbinsdale School Board voted Monday night to close four district buildings.

It’s a decision that all comes down to budget cuts, and one that will reshape the district

Educators, families and students are grieving the decision, which comes after a hard financial year. A massive calculating error left Robbinsdale Area Schools tens of millions of dollars in the red to start the school year.

The board approved the closure of Noble Elementary, Sonnesyn Elementary, Robbinsdale Middle School and the district’s Education Service Center at the end of next school year.

At Monday night’s meeting, speaker after speaker asked the board to reconsider, some fighting back tears as they talked about what these schools mean to their families.

“I know you have to make hard decisions about money and buildings, I don’t really understand all of it,” one seventh grader said at Monday’s meeting. “But I do understand without the RMS auditorium, over 80 kids at PMS, plus all the kids from other schools, won’t have a place to perform.”

District leaders say the move is part of a required plan to address more than $8 million in budget restrictions and ongoing operating debt.

“I guess what I want to say about it is that buildings have been closed in the district before. That doesn’t mean that they can’t be reopened,” Board Director Helen Bassett said.

Many speakers focused on what they say will be lost, especially at Sonnesyn, where one teacher said at least 30% of students receive special education services.

“Repeated disruption is not an inconvenience for them, it is harmful,” fourth and fifth grade teacher Nickie Hayes said. “Closing Sonnesyn dismantles systems that took years to build and places students with the highest needs into environments that are not designed nor staffed to support them.”

“Sonnesyn is not just a building, it’s stability, it’s safety, it’s our community,” PTO President Samantha Mellum said.

District leaders say transition planning will begin right away, with boundary changes, staffing shifts and program moves ahead of the 2026 school year.

The district is hosting more public listening sessions as it looks at additional cuts. The next one is happening Monday.

A 19-year-old man charged in connection with an assault during a Twin Cities high school basketball game in January has pleaded guilty.

Ayub Ali entered a petition to plead guilty to second-degree assault and second-degree riot on Monday, court documents show.

Four others between the ages of 16 and 19 were also charged in the assault that took place at Robbinsdale Cooper High School during a game against Fridley High School on Jan. 28.

According to the criminal complaint, Ali, Yahya Khanyare, Dursa Mohamed and two others drove to the game together, brought weapons into the gym and attacked the victim, who was sitting on the visiting team’s bench.

Charges say Khanyare hit the victim with a tire iron, while others punched and tried to stab the boy. Ali allegedly served as a lookout during the attack.

After the assault, the five suspects tried to flee in their vehicle, with Mohamed as the driver, according to the complaint. The vehicle crashed and all five were arrested.

So far, only one other suspect has been convicted in the assault. Mohamed pleaded guilty to second-degree riot and fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in April and was sentenced to three years of supervised probation.

Ali’s sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 13.

  • Family seeking closure months after teen killed at Robbinsdale park:

    [ad_1]

It has been three months since 19-year-old Amarie Alowonle was shot and killed during a large gathering at a Robbinsdale, Minnesota, park.

“Amari was God’s child, and she was a very loved child,” said her mother, Tatiana Kilgore.

“She was a sweetheart, very smart,” said Alowonle’s aunt, Maia Yang. “She’s a bright light.”

Tatiana Kilgore said her daughter was attending a prom send-off, along with dozens of others, at Sanborn Park. It was just before 9:30 p.m. on May 4 when Robbinsdale police said they heard multiple gun shots.

Alowonle and a 20-year-old were shot in the chaos. She died in the hospital a week later.

“Amarie was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Kilgore. “I don’t feel like Amarie deserved this, you know, she was a sweetheart. She’s not into any type of criminal activities, no gangs or any of that type of stuff.”

Alowonle’s mother and aunt said the teen grew up in Burnsville and taught toddlers. Alowonle graduated with a degree in nails from cosmetology school.

“Amarie’s life matters. We want to make sure that the people responsible or person comes to justice,” said Yang.

Robbinsdale police said they have been making progress in the investigation while working with people who were there during the shooting. So far, there have been no arrests.

“I just don’t want this to be a situation that’s like swept under the rug, because there’s a lot of other crimes that are being committed right after Amarie that are continuing, and I just feel like it needs to stop,” said Kilgore. “I definitely want justice and I hope that it’s sitting on their hearts and that something eventually will be done.”

Anyone with information on this shooting — or those with surveillance footage around or near Sanborn Park — is asked to call Robbinsdale police at 763-531-1242 or Crime Stoppers of Minnesota at 1-800-222-8477. Videos can be sent by email here.

If the video file is too large to send, officials say a different link will be sent to submit the footage, or police will send someone to pick up the file.

State officials are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Robbinsdale rivalry was tight and tied for a while, and then it was not. It was lopsided. Cooper trying to avenge back-to-back losses in the section final to Armstrong. But Friday was not their night.

Both teams undefeated at the start of the night. The home team hawks entered in a frenzy but made an error in the first drive. A fumble led to a short field for Armstrong. Kevon Johnson plunged it in.

The falcons went up 14 fast. But Cooper came back. Beckham van Voorst bends in a fade pass to Sama J Young for a touchdown. It was deadlocked.

But then it was all Armstrong. Kevon Johnson another short burst for a score. A massive night for him.

After halftime the falcons called up a rare air attack. Dawson Franke to Eli kuempel on the jump pass. It was 42-14.

And then the biggest play of the night. Johnson once again. Breaks away for an 84 yard sprint. A four touchdown night can cause a couple cramps. Armstrong wins it 49-21.

Kevin Johnson’s 4 touchdown night brings his season total up to 11 already. Remember it’s just week three.

ROBBINSDALE, Minn. — Police in the north metro say a home burst into flames shortly after officers arrested a man for refusing to leave it Saturday evening.

Officers with the Robbinsdale Police Department responded to the 3200 block of Halglo Place around 5:30 p.m. on a report of an unwanted person refusing to leave a residence.

Upon arrival, officers found a 34-year-old man who had several active warrants on the second floor of the home and arrested him.

As officers placed the man in the squad car, they heard several loud “popping” sounds and saw flames through the second-story window where the suspect had just been, police say.

Officers ran back into the house and evacuated several people and animals. No injuries were reported in the fire.

“The officers on the scene chose to run into a burning building, at their own peril, to save the lives of other people and animals.  These were truly heroic actions,” said Captain John Elder of the Robbinsdale Police Department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The residence experienced “substantial damage” police say.
