AT least 51 are dead after catastrophic flash floods hit Spain with videos showing roads becoming rapid and fears a dam might burst.

Rescuers are now desperately trying to find survivors after the downpour left some regions, including popular Brit holiday resorts, underwater.

The flooding has caused havoc, running from the provinces of Malaga in the south to Valencia in the east.

Tragically, a baby is now one of the 51 confirmed dead by officials on Wednesday morning.

Dozens more are feared dead as flood water which first hit around 1pm Tuesday caused rivers to burst their banks, entered homes, and swamped cars.

The President of the Valencia region Carlos Mazon said: “There are bodies and bodies continuing to appear in places we hadn’t been able to access before.”

In one small area on the outskirts of Valencia city, 40 people are either dead or missing, police sources have said.

Two council workers are said to be missing after a river burst its banks and two are feared dead after becoming trapped in a flooded basement in their police station.

In Massannassa, on Valencia’s outskirts, a man died after getting trapped in a lift as he went down to a flooded underground car park beneath his apartment to check on his vehicle.

Around 600 people were trapped in the Bonaire mall, Valencia’s largest shopping centre last night, after ground-floor flooding.

There are fears the Cirat-Vallat dam could burst with officials putting out a warning after they couldn’t open the gates.

Soon after the announcement local media reported operators were able to open two of the three floodgates.

Videos shared by Spanish broadcasters showed floodwater rising into the lower levels of homes and even carrying cars through the street.

Drivers also posted videos showing the horrific conditions on the roads, with many abandoning their vehicles as the water rose.

A taxi driver called Paco was hit by a wall of water with “brutal” force while driving on the outskirts of Valencia city.

He said: “We were heading along a road leading to the CV-36 motorway and as we got to a roundabout before we reached it, we saw people warning us to turn round.

“We turned back but in a question of seconds a massive amount of water appeared.

“It was impossible to get out of the car. A torrent of water smashed my taxi against barriers at the side of the road and I couldn’t move.

“We spent three hours on top of the lorry trailer before the water levels started to descend and we could reach safety.”

Ricardo Gabaldn, the mayor of Utiel, a town in Valencia, told national broadcaster RTVE his town was “trapped like rats”.

He said: “Cars and trash containers were flowing down the streets.

“The water was rising to three meters.”

Emergency services workers backed by drones were looking through buildings as they sought to find trapped residents.

In some places, rescue services used helicopters to lift people from houses and cars to safety.

The entire province of Valencia – which has a resident population of nearly 5.5 million – were told they should avoid any travel yesterday evening through emergency mobile warnings.

Schools, sports events, and other public facilities like parks are all closed on Wednesday.

Over 1,000 soldiers from Spain’s emergency response units were deployed to the devastated areas.

The adverse weather is amongst some of the most extreme the country has faced in recent years.

A high-speed train with 276 passengers derailed in the southern region of Andalusia, although no one was injured.

Flights were delayed and diverted from Valencia airport at first, with it eventually being closed lat last night.

Meanwhile, Letur’s mayor Sergio Marin described the situation as “catastrophic” as firefighters and police on the ground and in a helicopter searched for four people said to be “unaccounted for.”

Marin told Spanish TV: “We couldn’t have predicted anything like this was going to happen. It’s a major catastrophe.

“Emergency responders including a police helicopter are still searching for around four people who we haven’t been able to account for in the flood area.

“Some were in a vehicle and others were in their homes. There’s been a lot of damage but we’re just hoping everyone is okay and there are no personal casualties.”

Elsewhere, in the Spanish city of Almería cars have been destroyed by giant golf ball-sized hailstones that fell from the sky as a violent storm passed over last night.

Why was Spain hit by flooding?

Spain was hit by flash floods after the east of the country was hit by a meteorological phenomena known as a ‘DANA’.

A DANA, or a ‘cold drop’ is technically a system where there is an isolated depression in the atmosphere is at high levels.

In layman’s terms, more warm and moist Mediterranean air than usual was sucked high into the atmosphere after a cold system hit the country from the south.

The easterly wind then pushed all those clouds and rain into eastern Spain.

Three to four months of rain fell in some places over the space of 24 hours.

The DANA system hit southern Spain as it arrived from Morocco yesterday and is now expected to head west over southern Portugal.

Villarreal Núñez was tragically pronounced dead while the other two were taken to a hospital in Sabinas Hidalgo, Mexico.

The injured people are still being treated in the hospital, it is understood.

It is not clear who was driving the pickup truck at the time of the accident.

Some local news outlets reported her vehicle was being chased before the fatal accident.

Villarreal Núñez was elected “Reina de Turismo”, or “Tourism Queen”, of El Carmen municipality, Nuevo León state, in 2018.

According to her social media, she was from Sabinas Hidalgo but lived in Monterrey.

COPS are hunting an American who crashed into a British family while allegedly driving drunk on a motorbike in Thailand.

Gregory Yamada, 39, ploughed into a couple and their four-year-old daughter while on a dream holiday, leaving them with critical injuries.

    1

An American crashed into the Brit family while allegedly driving drunk in Thailand

The Brit dad, 36, said the driver was “evidently still very drunk” and showed “no remorse” after the crash.

His wife, 40, was knocked unconscious in the horror smash and suffered severe injuries to her head and body.

Their daughter’s eyes, face and body were injured when she was thrown into the air.

She also suffered a sinus fracture from the impact to her face.

The family were on holiday in Thailand and walking along a footpath on the island of Koh Chang when they were hit.

Yamada, from San Jose, California, was allegedly four times over the limit at the scene.

He was driving a powerful Honda motorbike and was charged with “driving while drunk causing a crash that injured other people”.

Cops have since issued an arrest warrant for him after the fugitive is thought to have fled across the border to Cambodia.

The Brit dad said they’ve since returned to the UK after the crash in January but are still recieving medical treatment.

He said: “The injuries my partner and daughter suffered were horrific. From what I witnessed, they are lucky to still be alive.

“At the hospital on the night of the crash he was evidently still very drunk and denied any involvement. I could not believe it.

“There was no sign of accountability or remorse. Unless he is brought to justice, I fear he could do the same thing again.

“We love Koh Chang and the people there. We come as often as we can and had saved up all year for our holiday, but this experience completely ruined things for us just a few days into our trip.

“I was informed that the suspect is an expat and owns a business in Koh Chang, so somebody may know his whereabouts. My priority is to get my family well and see him face justice.”

The holiday cost them around £5,000 for a 25-day break – but the horror crash happened only days in.

A police report said officers were at the scene just 15 minutes after the crash, which happened just before 8pm, and all four of them were taken to hospital.

Yamada was then due to appear in court, but never showed up.

However the arrest warrant out for Yamada said police had “a reasonable suspicion that the suspect will flee”.

If he returns to Thailand, is arrested and found guilty in court he could face a minimum of three years behind bars.

The maximum penalty in the country for injuring someone while driving drunk is up to six years and a fine of over £2,600.

Police Lieutenant Chotisiri from Koh Chang police station said: “The suspect was arrested and charged with drunk driving causing the crash.

“The details of the case were given to the court and he was due to appear there.

“There are no other suspects in the case and all of the evidence was given to the court.”

SHOCKING footage shows Xi Jinping’s guards drag a driver away after he ploughed his car into the gates of China’s “White House”.

The motorist allegedly tried to ram the entrance to Xi’s residence in a suspected assassination attempt on the despot.

The unnamed suspect tried to slam the gates of the palace in a high-end vehicle with Beijing licence plates on Sunday.

Filmed by a witness on a side of the street, the clip shows the moment the suspect’s vehicle mounted on the pavement.

A team of the dictator’s security guards dragged the man out of his car and carried him by his hands and feet along the sidewalk.

Meanwhile, other agents rushed to the man’s vehicle to check it for explosives.

The incident took place at the Xinhua Gate of the Zhongnanhai compound, where leaders of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) reside in Beijing, China.

It is not only home to the Chinese leader – who in recent years has tightened his iron-fist grip on power – but also State Council and Politburo members and their families.

The motive of the attack remains unclear and it is unknown if the man was staging a protest against the CCP as people grow dissatisfied with China’s socio-economic situation.

Under Xi’s reign, speaking against the government policies have become a grave crime with risks of facing jail time.

The ruthless leader has committed human rights abuses against Uyghurs, strangled freedom in Hong Kong and now looks poised to seize Taiwan.

Thousands have fled Hong Kong for UK to escape the menacing grip of Chinese crackdowns as teens are caged by China’s evil ‘People’s Police‘ for opposing Beijing.

Paranoid Xi Jinping is terrified of a Wagner-style coup after plot almost toppled pal Putin, says ex-China adviser to US

And since he’s been in power, Xi has axed hundreds of top officials from his tightly-controlled government in a Stalin-like crackdown.

The Chinese leader is now thought to be reshaping his military into a finely-tuned machine ready to invade Taiwan by removing top army commanders and replacing them with war-ready generals.

His one-party system has long presented an outward image of unity – but behind the scenes there are rumours of discontent.

Back in 2014, rumours began circulation on Chinese social media that Xi survived six assassination attempts – although state-controlled media hasn’t reported any.

These attempts were allegedly a result of the internal power struggle within the CCP- according to an anti-communist magazine The Trend which since then seized to exist.

  • Drivers risk £5,000 fine for driving in the wrong shoes – here's how to avoid it

Drivers risk £5,000 fine for driving in the wrong shoes – here's how to avoid it

    [ad_1]

DRIVERS have been warned they could be hit with a £5,000 fine this winter if they’re caught driving in the wrong shoes.

With Christmas fast approaching the urge to slip into a pair of toasty slippers or keep on your thick wellies after that snowy walk as you jump into the driving seat is very tempting for us all.

    1

Be careful this winter as driving in the wrong footwear could land you a £5,000 fineCredit: Rex

But this simple thing could land you in deep trouble and cause some major damage to your car or others.

In a poll of over 2,000 people, Aviva revealed that seven per cent of people wear the wrong footwear to drive in.

Incorrect footwear includes flip flops, wellies, thick boots, sliders, slippers, high heels and even bare feet isn’t deemed as appropriate.

Driving whilst wearing the inappropriate clothing and footwear can risk a fine under Rule 97 of the Highway Code which says you should ensure: “clothing and footwear do not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner”

    read more in driving fines

If a motorist causes an accident and is found to be wearing the wrong shoes they could face a fine of up to £5,000.

However driving barefoot or in the wrong footwear isn’t technically illegal as the fine can only come into play if you aren’t seen as driving your motor safely.

The Aviva poll also found that 19 per cent of drivers have driven with snow still on the top of their car and 16 per cent have started their journey without being able to see completely through their windscreen.

Driving fines could easily catch you out this winter as many of us have no clue we could get in trouble for doing certain simple things.

We all have our favourite Christmas songs from The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl to Maria Carey and Wizard.

However loud music can be deemed to be a violation of Highway Code rule 148.

The penalty for this is an unlimited fine, discretionary disqualification and three to nine penalty points.

Drivers were also shocked after discovering they could get a £1,000 fine for using common ‘thank you’ gestures.

Rule 160 of the Highway Code says: “Drive or ride with both hands on the wheel or handlebars where possible.

“This will help you to remain in full control of the vehicle at all times.”
