LET’S GET OVER TO DIRK WITH OUR FORECAST. YEAH, THE BIGGEST IMPACT TODAY HAS BEEN IN THE MOUNTAINS. WE HAVE HAD SOME SHOWERS, WE’VE HAD SOME HAIL AND SOME PRETTY HEAVY DOWNPOURS. BUT THE SIERRA, THAT’S WHERE WE CONTINUE TO SEE A PRETTY GOOD AMOUNT OF SNOW STILL FALLING. NOW WE ARE SEEING SOME SIGNS OF IT BREAKING A BIT AND THAT’S GOOD. LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK HERE. BETWEEN HIGHWAY 50 AND I-80. THIS IS WHERE WE HAVE SOME OF THE HEAVIEST SNOW FALLING RIGHT NOW IN PLUMAS COUNTY AND EL DORADO COUNTIES, AND I-80, WHERE WE’VE BEEN SEEING A LITTLE BIT OF A BREAK. ACTUALLY, THE SNOW PLOWS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO KIND OF CATCH UP A LITTLE BIT. YOU CAN START SEEING SOME OF THE SURFACE OF THE ROAD HERE FROM THE DONNER SUMMIT SKY CAMERA THAT IS ICE ENCRUSTED WITH SOME OF THOSE SNOWFLAKES. GOT A LITTLE BIT OF A WINDOW TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE ACTUAL I-80 DONNER SUMMIT AREA, BUT TEMPERATURE CURRENTLY 18 DEGREES WITH WIND GUSTS UP TO 16MPH. SO LET’S GO AHEAD AND TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE RAIN HITTING THESE SPOTS WHERE THERE’S THESE LITTLE HEAVY DOWNPOURS, THESE LITTLE CELLS THAT ARE POPPING UP. THAT’S WHERE WE’RE SEEING HAIL THAT’S BEEN FORMING. AND SO THOSE ARE SPOTS THAT’S BEEN COLD ENOUGH TO WHERE WE’RE SEEING HAIL HAS HAD SEVERAL REPORTS OF HAIL. AND THOSE ARE THE MOST LIKELY SPOTS HERE ALONG HIGHWAY 108. WE’RE SEEING SOME. AND THAT’S GOING TO BE PUSHING IN AND TURNING INTO SOME SNOW AS IT MAKES ITS WAY UP INTO THE FOOTHILLS, UP ABOVE 1500 FEET. ALSO, JUST TO THE SOUTH OF IONE. YOU’RE KIND OF COMING OUT OF THIS AREA OF RAIN AS THIS IS MOVING A LITTLE BIT MORE TO THE SOUTH TOWARDS SAN ANDREAS. IN JACKSON, YOU’VE BEEN SEEING SOME OF THAT RAIN. WE HAVE SOME RAIN NEAR CAMERON PARK CURRENTLY, AND AUBURN, WHICH EARLIER HAD SOME SNOW, IS NOW GETTING SOME LIGHT RAIN. SO SNOW THAT’S LAKE TAHOE SOUTH LAKE TAHOE PICTURE HERE SHOWING THE AREA BLANKETED WITH SOME FRESH SNOW. CURRENT TEMPERATURE AND TRUCKEE IS 25 DEGREES MODESTO 5154 IN STOCKTON AND 51 DEGREES CURRENTLY IN SACRAMENTO. SO ONCE WE GOT RID OF THE RAIN AND THINGS ARE DRYING OUT TEMPERATURES, THEY REBOUNDED A LITTLE BIT. EVEN WITH THAT COLD AIR THAT’S BRINGING OUT THOSE LOW SNOW LEVELS, CURRENT WINDS. WE HAVE WINDS 21MPH IN STOCKTON. THAT’S WHERE WE’RE SEEING SOME OF THE STRONGEST WINDS RIGHT NOW. 17 MILE AN HOUR WINDS IN FAIRFIELD, SAN FRANCISCO BEATS THEM ALL WITH A WIND COMING FROM THE WEST NORTHWEST AT 32MPH. SO WE HAVE THIS POCKET OF COLD AIR. IT’S MOVED IN AND WE’VE SEEN THE LOW SNOW LEVELS. AND THIS IS GOING TO MAKE FOR A COLD NIGHT TONIGHT, ESPECIALLY AREAS WHERE WE SEE THE CLOUD COVER STARTING TO CLEAR OUT. THAT’S JUST OPENING THE DOOR, ALLOWING THAT COLD AIR TO JUST SIT IN PLACE. ALTHOUGH ANY WARMTH IS GOING TO ESCAPE. AND WE’RE LOOKING AT A FREEZE WARNING THAT HAS BEEN ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT UNTIL 9:00 TOMORROW MORNING WITH SUBFREEZING TEMPERATURES. BUT NOT EVERY PLACE IS GOING TO BE THE SAME. WE’RE LOOKING AT THE NORTH END OF THE VALLEY, STRETCHING ALL THE WAY UP INTO SHASTA COUNTY. THIS IS WHERE THE COLDEST AIR IS GOING TO BE. ANYWHERE FROM 23 TO 28 DEGREES. AND THEN YOU GET MORE TOWARDS SACRAMENTO AND ON INTO SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY. AND THAT’S WHERE WE’RE EXPECTING TEMPERATURES TO RANGE MORE 29 TO 34 DEGREES. BUT STILL, THOSE ARE SOME PRETTY COLD TEMPERATURES FOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. SO IF YOU HAVE ANY TEMPERATURE SENSITIVE PLANTS OR ANYTHING THAT COULD BE AFFECTED BY THAT KIND OF COLD, TAKE CARE OF IT. TAKE CARE OF THAT BUSINESS SNOW THAT’S GOING TO BE DECREASING OVERNIGHT TONIGHT AND INTO TOMORROW MORNING. WE CAN SEE WE HAVE SOME BREAKS IN THE CLOUD COVER.     Editorial Standards

    The next few days will be dry in the Valley, Foothills and Sierra.

    That will give plow and power crews some much-needed time to clear roads and restore electricity.

    Temperatures will plummet Friday morning with many Valley spots at of below freezing at sunrise. Saturday and Sunday will gradually turn milder.

    A couple showers can’t be ruled out Sunday and Monday, but most places will stay dry both days.

    Rain is likely on Tuesday and the snow level will stay at or even above the Sierra summits.

    Cold Friday morning

    A Freeze Warning is in effect Thursday night into Friday morning across the Valley.

    Temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing in some Valley spots Friday morning. The Foothills may have some icy side streets with temperatures in the 20s. Many Sierra roads will be covered in snow and ice.

    Sierra travel outlook

    Snow will stop Thursday night and dry weather is in the forecast Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

    It will take plow crews a while to remove all of the snow that’s fallen this week, especially on narrow side streets.

    Drivers should expect chain controls and long travel times on Friday and maybe Saturday even with dry weather.

    Friday’s high temperatures

    Friday afternoon will be dry and chilly with a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures will be running about 10 degrees cooler than normal.

    Weekend forecast

    The weekend will be warmer and mostly dry.

    The only chance for a shower comes on Sunday. Areas east of I-5 including the Foothills and Sierra will stay dry while the west side of the Valley could see a few hundredths of an inch of rain.

    KCRA 3 weather Impact Day Tuesday

    The next round of widespread precipitation is in the forecast for Tuesday. This will be a much warmer storm system and the snow level will likely stay at or even above the Sierra passes.

    The KCRA 3 weather team has issued a weather Impact Day for Tuesday because of how rain will affect travel and any outdoor plans.

    Valley 7-day forecast

    A few showers are possible Sunday and Monday, but Tuesday is more likely to be wet all day.

    Rain will clear for the rest of next week.

According to the Apopka Police Department, two people were found dead inside Griffin General Store at 262 W.     People near a fire Monday afternoon at a commercial building in Nashua, New Hampshire, said the explosion was very loud and led the ground to shake.Fire officials said about 40 people were in the Greater Nashua Mental Health building when the gas leak was first reported at about 2:15 p.m. Fire Chief Steve Buxton said four people were unaccounted for as of Monday evening, but he believed officials would be able to make contact with them.Three firefighters were injured, one seriously. William Closs was working in the area when he felt the rumbling.”Real loud. It shook a lot,” Closs said. An emergency alert was issued in New Hampshire about a potential gas leak after the fire and explosion.The emergency alert urged anyone in the area of the building to extinguish burners or other flames and prepare to evacuate.     Interstate 95 was shut down in both directions in Brevard County on Sunday afternoon due to a wildfire, causing low visibility, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.Roads were closed between mile marker 166 and mile marker 173, about 7 miles between the area of St. Johns Heritage Parkway and Malabar Road.The road has since reopened, troopers said. FHP is advising drivers to continue to avoid the area until further notice. According to the Florida Forest Service, the brush fire over I-95 in Brevard County, called the Terkam Road fire, grew to 130 acres and is now 100% contained.

    Thousands of flights across the U.S. set to take off over the weekend were canceled as a monster storm started to wreak havoc Saturday across much of the country and threatened to knock out power for days and snarl major roadways with dangerous ice.Roughly 140 million people, or more than 40% of the U.S. population, were under a winter storm warning from New Mexico to New England. The National Weather Service forecast warned of widespread heavy snow and a band of catastrophic ice stretching from east Texas to North Carolina.   • What will it take for the Falcons to make the playoffs? Wins, ways, and a miracle

    The Atlanta Falcons are back home after defeating the New Orleans Saints 24-10 on the road on Sunday. The victory may have only been the Falcons’ first in five weeks, but it has some significance. The win reignited the discussion over what it would take to make the playoffs, at the very least.

    At 4-7, the road to the playoffs in the NFC is going to take a lot of winning by Atlanta and a lot of losing by several teams. Before we go over the teams that the Falcons have to pass to make the playoffs, and what it will take to get that accomplished, the Falcons will need to win their final six games of the season.

    The Falcons are back on the road against the New York Jets (2-9 overall) on Sunday. A loss to the Jets would render this entire breakdown moot. The Falcons cannot afford to lose any of their remaining games. The seven losses are more than any of the teams that are in Atlanta’s way of getting a wild card spot have. Those teams are the following: the Detroit Lions (7-4), Green Bay Packers (7-3-1), Seattle Seahawks (8-3), San Francisco 49ers (8-4), and the Carolina Panthers (6-6 following a loss at San Francisco on Monday night. The Panthers hold a tiebreaker over the Falcons after sweeping them this season.

    Following the Jets game, the Falcons will return home to host the Seahawks, who are a game behind the L.A. Rams (9-2 overall) in the NFC West on Sunday, Dec. 7. Atlanta will host the Rams and NFL MVP candidate and former University of Georgia Bulldogs star quarterback Matthew Stafford (30 touchdowns and two interceptions this season) next month in the last Monday Night Football game of the year on Dec. 29. Both games can be described as the toughest of the season for Atlanta.

    Atlanta will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, Dec. 11, and a loss to Tampa will end the season, even if the Falcons win every other game they play from this point forward. The season-opening loss to Tampa has Atlanta in a position to not lose to the Buccaneers again or be swept by two teams in the NFC South (Carolina).

    The Falcons have games against the Cardinals in Arizona on Sunday, Dec. 21, and the Saints at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to close the regular season on Jan. 4. Neither will matter if the winning doesn’t continue. The Philadelphia Eagles (8-3), Chicago Bears (8-3), Bucs, and Rams are leading their respective divisions and won’t be out of the playoff picture without a free fall of some sort.

    The Falcons are not done with the 2025 season, but it will take a lot of winning and a miracle.

  • Bride helps crash victim while still in her wedding dress

    Moments after tying the knot on her wedding day, a bride who works as a nurse stepped in to save a life while she was still wearing her wedding dress.The same night Heather Schubert walked down the aisle celebrating her new union, she ended up at a crash scene.”We saw a man laying across the road, and his car, all the airbags were deployed,” Heather Ramsey Schubert said.Schubert and her husband were driving home on a Louisiana highway Saturday night, and the off-duty nurse saw a call to action.”When you’re a nurse and you always put other people first, that’s always my first instinct,” Schubert said.She wasted no time, rushing to help a man critically injured in a crash, before EMS arrived.”I assisted in the manner of seeing what his pupils were like if we had any trauma responses, which he, in fact, did have trauma. His pupils were not reactive to light,” Schubert said.Schubert works to save lives every day as a nurse at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. She says it’s just in her blood to protect.”There’s never a question or a hesitation; I will probably always be the person to run into the accident and see if I can help,” Schubert said.Critical care paramedic Steven Tafoya said emergency teams are trained on how to respond to situations like this.”Just because we’re off the clock doesn’t mean that instinct stops,” Tafoya said. “So what this lady did on her wedding day was remarkable and shows her commitment to health care in general.”Although it was not the ending Heather expected for her wedding day, she said she would not change a thing.”I would hope that anybody, whether they’re a nurse or not, anybody if they see someone in trouble would run and do the same thing,” Schubert said.The victim’s condition is unclear, but everyone involved hopes for a full recovery.

    Schubert works to save lives every day as a nurse at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. She says it’s just in her blood to protect.

    “There’s never a question or a hesitation; I will probably always be the person to run into the accident and see if I can help,” Schubert said.

    Critical care paramedic Steven Tafoya said emergency teams are trained on how to respond to situations like this.

    “Just because we’re off the clock doesn’t mean that instinct stops,” Tafoya said. “So what this lady did on her wedding day was remarkable and shows her commitment to health care in general.”

    Although it was not the ending Heather expected for her wedding day, she said she would not change a thing.

    “I would hope that anybody, whether they’re a nurse or not, anybody if they see someone in trouble would run and do the same thing,” Schubert said.

    The victim’s condition is unclear, but everyone involved hopes for a full recovery.

  • Judge rejects reduced prison sentence for participant in Colorado rock-throwing attack

    A Jefferson County judge refused to reduce the prison sentence for one of the men convicted in the killing of 20-year-old Alexa Bartell during a spree of rock-throwing attacks more than two years ago.

    Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik, 21, was sentenced in May to 45 years in prison for Bartell’s death. She was killed in April 2023 when Karol-Chik and two other teenagers threw a 9.3-pound rock through her windshield as she drove on Indiana Street near the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge. The rock struck Bartell in the head.

    In September, Karol-Chik sought to knock 10 years off his sentence through a post-sentencing review, citing his good behavior in prison. He noted that he’d applied for a 10-year prison education program through which he expects to receive a bachelor’s degree in Christian studies and then work in chaplains’ offices across the prison system.

    First Judicial District Court Judge Christopher Zenisek, who presided over Karol-Chik’s case and imposed the original 45-year prison sentence, opted against holding a hearing to listen to arguments about sentence reduction and instead denied Karol-Chik’s request in a brief Oct. 8 order.

  • How one road and an Israeli settlement could end dreams for this Palestinian city

    Hanging by the desk of the mayor of Bethany — Ezariya, in Arabic — is a blown-up aerial photo from 1938 showing this Palestinian town on Jerusalem’s edge how it once was:

    Before the Israeli separation wall severed its access to Jerusalem to the west, before the Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim settlement took root nearby, and before a new wall that will soon block it from the east and effectively rend the occupied West Bank in two.

    Mayor Khalil Abu Al-Rish stared at the photo one recent morning, a cigarette in one hand and a glum look on his face, then pointed with his other hand out his office window at Ezariya’s bustling main thoroughfare, the primary artery connecting north West Bank cities like Ramallah to Bethlehem and Hebron in the south.

    “There are 55,000 living in this town. This road alone has 60 cars passing through it every minute, according to our research. The [Israeli] plan now is to shut it down,” he said.

    “Do that, and there’s no Palestinian state.”

    “The plan” Abu Al-Rish was referring to is East One or E1, the long-deferred Israeli project that aims to build 3,400 new settlement homes over a 3,000-acre area in the mountains stretching out from East Jerusalem to Maale Adumim.

    It’s another in a series of moves Israel has taken over the last two years to further the possible annexation of the West Bank, which Palestinians consider a part of their future state and which Israel snatched from Jordan in 1967; its occupation is considered illegal by international law. President Trump said annexation is a red line he will not allow Israel to cross, but he also has not discouraged Israel from expanding settlements in the region.

    E1 would cut any Palestinian link to East Jerusalem — where Palestinians hope to make their capital — and torpedo any chance of a contiguous Palestinian state.

    This week, ultranationalist ministers in the Israeli parliament gave preliminary approval to a bill granting Israel authority to annex the West Bank — a largely symbolic move that appears to have been an attempt to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

    Netanyahu has long called for the annexation of the West Bank, but has demurred from doing so for fear of angering Israel’s main patron in the U.S.

    Vice President JD Vance, who visited Israel this week, on Thursday said of the vote that if it is “political stunt, then it is a very stupid political stunt.”

    “I personally take some insult to it,” Vance said. “The policy of the Trump administration is that the West Bank will not be annexed by Israel.”

    But Israel has taken plenty of steps aimed at making annexation a de facto scenario that may soon turn irreversible. It has restricted movement by erecting 288 gates on entrances and exits of Palestinians towns and villages, adding to what the U.N. says are 849 “movement obstacles,” even as settlements have increased in number and size, further penning Palestinians into islands of territory they have little chance of leaving.

    One such gate, a yellow metal barrier on the road that Israeli soldiers lock and then leave, appeared this month at Ezariya’s eastern entrance, said Abu Al-Rish.

    “We watched them install it one night. It’s not like they talk to us or ask us for permission,” he said, a wan smile on his face.

    Businesses and homes near the gate were issued demolition orders to make way for a separation barrier, the Israeli-built barricade composed of 26-foot-high cement walls resembling rows of piano keys slicing through so many parts of the West Bank.

    One of the affected owners, 50-year-old Omar Abu Saho, who runs a toy store, said he received a legal notification Oct. 4. The deadline for leaving the area had passed, he said, but no one has come to enforce it for now. But the order certainly hasn’t helped business.

    “Look around you, the place is empty. And I’m not getting more inventory. If I sell anything, that’s it,” he said.

    Abu Saho had already been forced to move here with his two sons and five daughters from the West Bank city of Jenin.
    Though Jenin is about 100 miles from the Gaza Strip, when Israel launched its campaign on the enclave after the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, the city was nevertheless the focus of sustained Israeli military operations, forcing many merchants like Abu Saho to close up shop.

    “We couldn’t continue there, so I came here. Now it seems I’ll have to move again. You follow your business,” he said. “The Israelis destroyed me for three or four times. But every time I continue. And besides, I like to work. If I despair, I won’t live.”

    Omar Hassan Abu Ghali, 51, who co-owns a car wash on Ezariya’s main road with his family, was less sanguine. The night he saw the gate installed, he said, felt like his “life was ending.”

    “You put a wall here, this area goes bye-bye. There’s nothing any more,” he said, staring at cars making their way through the gate, which at that moment was open.

    “The Israelis want to shut down my livelihood, for me and my kids. What am I supposed to do?” he asked. “Where am I supposed to go?”

    Tourism to the area has all but withered away, said Hussein Hamad, the caretaker of the archaeological pilgrimage site in Ezariya thought to be the site of Lazarus’ tomb.

    “October is supposed to our best month. I’d get 20 to 25 groups a week. How many do you see around you now?” he said, waving his hand around the seemingly abandoned area. A nearby shop owner looked expectantly at two people visiting the tomb, but turned back and locked up the shop when she discovered they were reporters, then walked away.

    As part of the E1 project, Israel intends to build a Palestinian-only bypass — euphemistically called the “Fabric of Life Road” or “Sovereignty Road” — through parts of Ezariya that it says would solve the problem of movement between parts of the West Bank, without allowing Palestinian traffic near Maale Adumim.

    But critics, including Peace Now, an Israeli advocacy group that promotes a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, dismissed the bypass in a statement when the project was first approved in March as an “apartheid road” that “serves no purpose in improving Palestinian transportation.”

    “Instead, it is solely aimed at facilitating the annexation of a vast area,” Peace Now said. The group noted the irony that the road wouldn’t be funded by Israeli taxpayers, but would use customs revenues Israel collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority but which it frequently withholds.

    The bypass road would also chomp off more of Ezariya’s territory, a significant portion of which has already been expropriated by Israel, said Abu Al-Rish. That would prevent the town from the expansion it desperately needs to house the growing population. He added that if the roadworks go ahead, Ezariya’s role as a top Palestinian commercial hub would end.

    “We have more than 1,000 businesses here. What you see in front of you is the longest commercial street in all the West Bank,” he said.

    “It’s just inconceivable to me that this will go away.”

    It’s not the first time Israel has tried to bring E1 into being. First proposed in 1994 under Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (a year after he signed the Oslo Accords that were to bring about a Palestinian state), E1 stalled before concerted international opposition, including from traditional allies of Israel, which feared the project’s impact on the West Bank.

    As recently as two years ago, Abu Al-Rish said, U.S. officials would reassure him the plan wasn’t going through. Even now, European nations have remained against E1 and condemned the Israeli government when it approved the plan in August. The Trump administration took a different tack.

    “We will not tell Israel what to do. We will not interfere,” said U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, an avid supporter of Israel and settlements, in an interview with Galatz radio in August.

    Israel has so far constructed approximately 160 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, housing some 700,000 Jews alongside 3.3 million Palestinians.

    Israel argues E1 is a necessity to link Maale Adumim to Jerusalem both for the purposes of urban planning and security. But for their part, Israeli politicians are clear on E1’s effect.

    “The Palestinian state is being erased from the table not by slogans but by deeds,” said Bezalel Smotrich, the ultranationalist finance minister in Netanyahu’s government, after the August approval. He framed the decision as a response to a raft of countries recognizing the state of Palestine.

    “Every settlement, every neighborhood, every housing unit is another nail in the coffin of this dangerous idea,” he said.

    Ever since the E1 project was on the books, Atallah Mazaraa, a Bedouin who lives near Ezariya in an area called Pope Hill — or Jabal Al-Baba, so named because it was gifted to the pope when the area was under Jordanian control — has kept up a grinding legal fight to keep his community in place.

    Sitting in a pre-fabricated hut that doubles as an office from where he runs his legal campaign, Mazaraa reminisced about the time when his flock of sheep and goats could roam and graze where Maale Adumim now stands. Then the spring from where they drank was commandeered for the settlement’s use, even as the thousands of square miles open to his livestock shrank with every passing year.

    “Every day they try to take more and more. You just don’t have stability,” he said.

    For Mazaraa, international recognition means nothing.

    “We Palestinians know if you go from Nablus to Jericho, there’s no state. What, I want a passport, a piece of paper that says I have a state, when every 200 yards there’s a checkpoint?” he said.

    “All we want the Israelis to do is leave us alone,” he said. “But they’ve taken away so much of the West Bank.”

  • California’s Punjabi truckers say they’re being harassed after deadly Florida wreck

    For 15 years, Sumit Singh has hauled freight to and from Los Angeles ports and across the country.

    For the first time, though, the Punjabi Sikh truck driver is now reluctant to leave the state. Three of his colleagues have been detained by immigration officers, and new trucking horror stories pop up in his WhatsApp group chat every day.

    “Lots of drivers are scared right now,” Singh said.

    Punjabi drivers say they are being harassed after the arrest of Harjinder Singh, 28, an Indian-born truck driver who allegedly made an illegal U-turn, causing an accident that killed three people in Florida.

    The incident sparked online vitriol against the Sikh community and turned into a political shouting match about illegal immigration and the qualifications and testing of international truck drivers.

    The Department of Homeland Security is blaming California, as the driver accused of causing the accident obtained his commercial driver’s license and work permit in the state.

    According to the DHS, Harjinder Singh had obtained commercial driver’s licenses in Washington and California, despite failing an English fluency test. The U.S. Marshals Service said he entered the U.S. illegally through Mexico in 2018.

    “Just because of one person, all the community shouldn’t be penalized,” said Sumit Singh, the driver. “Drivers don’t feel comfortable going on the road.”

    He said he is hearing Punjabis are now targeted for impromptu English proficiency tests at highway checkpoints and weigh stations.

    Most Sikhs are from the northern state of Punjab in India. Many sport turbans, which are often brightly colored and tied to cover their uncut hair. Their turbans and beards are important symbols of their faith and culture.

    Singh is a common surname in the Sikh community, and none of the people mentioned in this story are related.

    Thousands of Punjabi Sikh truck drivers and operators who form the backbone of American commerce are feeling threatened due to increased scrutiny.

    Advocacy groups say there has been a spike in threats and safety concerns since the Florida incident.

    Sikh-owned trucking businesses that were already battling a slowdown in the industry due to rising tariffs are now confronted with a new challenge. Drivers are unwilling to drive on interstate highways out of fear of losing their livelihoods due to enhanced checks.

    There are around 750,000 Punjabi Sikhs in the United States. Of those, about 150,000 work in the trucking industry, with the majority based on the West Coast, according to Harman Singh, executive director of the Sikh Coalition, the largest Sikh civil rights organization in the U.S.

    There’s a national network of Sikhs working in fields adjacent to trucking as well, from truck-stop Indian restaurants to trucking schools and logistics companies.

    The trucking culture is so deep in India as well as North America, that it has spawned its own genre of Punjabi music. High-energy dance numbers with titles such as “Driver’s Life” and “Trucker.”

    This is the toughest period in decades for the business, said Baldev Khang, 52, the director of finance and operations at Fontana-based Cargo Solutions Express.

    His business has faced a cascade of adverse events: an overall slowdown in trucking due to increased tariffs, an extra 50% tariff targeting Indian imports, and now his drivers are being targeted because they hold licenses from California.

    “A lot of drivers don’t want to go over-the-road,” Khang said, using a term that means jobs that require drivers to cross state lines. “They prefer a local job.”

    Three of his Sikh truck drivers were arrested in recent weeks, Khang said. His firm operates 1,000 trucks delivering freight for Walmart, Amazon and others.

    His Somali and Mexican drivers are also avoiding the roads, he said.

    Just this week, five of his Punjabi drivers quit out of fear of being targeted. All of those who quit had valid work permits issued by California, he said, but were worried after hearing people with California paperwork were getting harassed in Oklahoma, Texas and Florida.

    Another concern for immigrant truckers has been the English language proficiency test required for commercial truck drivers.

    In late April, President Trump issued an executive order stating that truckers who can’t speak or read the language proficiently are unfit for service. The order said that understanding traffic signs, communicating with Border Patrol, or answering questions at checkpoints is necessary to keep American roads safe.

    This issue resurfaced in public debate when the Trump administration said that the driver in the Florida accident failed an English proficiency test after the incident.

    After the crash, Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a freeze on foreign worker visas for commercial truck drivers.

    At Sikh places of worship in Stockton, the community has initiated English classes for truck drivers, said Raman Dhillon, CEO of the North America Punjabi Trucking Assn., which has 2,500 members.

    Dhillon stated that the Commercial Driver’s License test system in California is flawed, and the lenient enforcement standards at driving schools have led to DMVs issuing licenses too easily to work-permit holders.

    “You’re yelling at people right now. You’re yelling at the community right now,” Dhillon said. “Who allowed them to do that? It’s your DMVs. It’s your states.”

    Even while batting for reform, Dhillon Singh criticized Florida politicians, including Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, for calling Harjinder Singh a “thug” and said the type of rhetoric surrounding the incident unfairly scapegoated the Sikh community.

    In one instance, he recalled, a Sikh driver waiting at a truck stop was harassed, and when he called 911, the cops showed up and asked the driver to leave.

    “They are throwing water bottles on the trucks. They’re throwing eggs on the trucks,” said Dhillon Singh. “This is all the byproduct of what Florida did with this case.”

    Since the Florida case, the civil rights organization Sikh Coalition has fielded dozens of calls from Sikh truckers asking for help, some reaching out to gain access to language resources.

    “We fully recognize that there is a need for common-sense safety measures to protect people on the road,” Harman Singh said. “And at the same time, what we want to do is make sure that roadside inspectors aren’t profiling Sikh and Punjabi truck drivers, for looking like they don’t speak English because of their visible articles of faith.”

    The police chief for the Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo used road-rage-like tactics to confront speeding drivers while he was off-duty, outside of his jurisdiction and in an unmarked state vehicle, prompting drivers to call 911 at least three times last year, an internal investigation found.

    Chief Richard McMorran was reinstated to his position Aug. 15 with a 5% pay cut after a 10-month investigation into his actions. He was on paid administrative leave during that investigation, which included a review by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and a referral to prosecutors for potential criminal charges.

    In an email Thursday, 10th Judicial District Attorney Kala Beauvais said her office is still considering whether criminal charges are warranted.

    “We are nearing a decision,” she said.

    McMorran did not return a request for comment Thursday.

    On at least six occasions between January and September 2024, McMorran confronted drivers on Interstate 25 who he believed were speeding, the investigation found. The chief tailgated, raced and pulled up beside drivers. He yelled, gestured, swerved into the other drivers’ lanes, refused to let them pass, and “paced” them to gauge their speed, investigators found.

    He was in the unmarked vehicle, outside of hospital grounds, off-duty and sometimes wearing plain clothes during the confrontations, the investigation found. It was not immediately clear Thursday whether the unmarked vehicle was equipped with police lights and sirens.

    Two of the incidents, in January 2024 and September 2024, ended in actual traffic stops, the internal investigation found.

    “You had multiple interactions with members of the public that caused them to fear for their safety and call 911. These interactions were repeatedly inappropriate, unprofessional, demonstrated poor judgment and exhibited a lack of understanding about the impact you have on members of the public when behaving this way,” Chris Frenz, deputy director of operations and legal affairs at the Office of Civil and Forensic Mental Health, the agency that operates the state’s mental health hospitals, wrote in an Aug. 13 disciplinary letter.

    Drivers called 911 during three of the confrontations. At least one of the drivers was concerned that the chief “had ulterior motives other than traffic enforcement,” Frenz wrote.

    The investigation considered whether the chief was specifically targeting women in the confrontations, spokeswoman Stephanie Fredrickson confirmed. She said the targeted drivers were both men and women but declined to give an exact breakdown of their genders “to protect their privacy.”

    Frenz concluded that the chief was not specifically stopping women.

    “I do not believe you were targeting (name redacted) or anyone specifically, as you admitted that it was common practice for you to identify people speeding and use various techniques to get them to slow down,” he wrote. “However, your practices very clearly gave an initial appearance of some type of targeting or harassing behavior from the viewpoint of any specific person subject to this behavior.”

    During the internal investigation, McMorran denied swerving or tailgating, but generally acknowledged the incidents and told internal investigators that he feels he has “an obligation to intervene when people are driving too fast.” He said he pulled alongside drivers to monitor their speeds because his vehicle is not equipped with radar, and that the “perceived yelling and gesturing” was his way of telling the drivers to slow down.

    “You were shocked that anyone thought you were trying to run off the road. You’ve never done anything like that before,” Frenz wrote in the letter, summarizing the chief’s positions during the investigation. “…If you had known so many people had been calling in, you would have approached things differently.”

    The chief noted during the internal investigation that he is allowed to make traffic stops. He is a POST-certified police officer, state records show. Frenz wrote in his letter that “current policy” gives the chief the authority to conduct traffic stops.

    Frenz wrote that he was reducing the chief’s salary by $498 a month, not because he made traffic stops, but because of the way he did so.

    “You should have known that pacing people in an unmarked vehicle, with no uniform, without pulling them over, would cause confusion and fear,” Frenz wrote. “Moreover, your repeated conduct on the freeway reflected poorly on the department.”

    NEWBURY — Repairs to the Plum Island Turnpike drawbridge resumed Thursday, reducing the only way on or off the island to one lane – a traffic pattern that is expected to remain for roughly two months, according to town officials.

    As a result, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation will employ a temporary alternating traffic pattern on the bridge as crews complete structural steel repairs. Work is scheduled to take place from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. until mid-December but crews may work around the clock if necessary.

    In a statement, Newbury police Chief Patty Fisher called the repairs “necessary” and said she is pleased work is taking place when it will have the least possible impact on Plum Island traffic.

    “I appreciate that it’s expected to be completed before the first snowfall,” Fisher said. “It goes without saying that people traveling through the single lane should use caution and abide by the traffic signals and speed. Be mindful that pedestrian and vehicle traffic are sharing the lane.”

    While temporary traffic control signals and barriers are in place, a 24/7 signal-controlled, alternating traffic pattern will be used as work is performed beneath the bridge deck.

    Signs and police details will also be used to guide drivers through the work zone. Drivers traveling through the work zone should expect delays, reduce their speed and use caution as the eastbound/westbound traffic patterns are subject to change, according to MassDOT.

    Fisher said workers will be often stationed under the bridge.

    “Just because you can’t see them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there,” Fisher said.

    The work is being completed as part of a $7.7 million districtwide drawbridge operations and repair contract.

    In March, MassDOT noted some deterioration in the steel along with some heaving of a limited portion of the bridge deck. MassDOT worked with the U.S. Coast Guard to implement a detour to keep the bridge closed to marine traffic until the interim repairs were performed, according to a MassDOT spokesperson.

    That prompted MassDOT officials to devise a plan to shift motorists away from the center of the bridge where deterioration was discovered so that the interim repairs could be made. The temporary traffic plan was implemented April 19 right before those repairs began.

    An April 19 advisory from MassDOT stated the drawbridge would not be open to marine vessels through Aug. 5 to allow for repairs to the road surface. The speed limit on the bridge was reduced and traffic was periodically limited to one lane to allow the state to restore the bridge to full capacity. Because one lane will remain open at all times, Newbury first responders will not be stationed on the island during construction, according to Fisher.

    “We only station responders there if we anticipate the turnpike will flood or they’re opening the bridge,” the police chief said.

    BOSTON — Transit advocates are renewing a push for congestion pricing along the state’s toll roads with new polling data suggesting support for the move among voters.

    A MassINC poll released this week found that voters are getting squeezed by a double whammy of housing costs and transportation issues that have some considering leaving the state. Majorities of those polled said they are getting squeezed by both housing – 71% – and transportation costs at 57% with a shocking 38% saying they will move out of state, according to the poll.

    But pollsters said 50% of those who responded to the survey want the state to study initiatives such as congestion pricing, where tolls are lowered during off-peak times and raised during rush hour to encourage drivers to use public transportation.

    Transit advocates jumped on the poll’s findings to argue that voters want the state to revisit congestion tolling in the greater Boston region to reduce traffic congestion and tailpipe pollution.

    “With a dire budget shortfall when it comes to transportation, we need a mix of solutions and funding sources to ensure our system works for everyone – and isn’t a crushing financial burden for people across our state,” said Reggie Ramos, executive director of Transportation for Massachusetts.

    “Congestion pricing should definitely be on the table as one of those solutions we need to explore,” he said.

    Massachusetts has a backlog of maintenance on roads and bridges estimated at $50 billion — a figure compounded by a decline in federal highway dollars.

    Currently, the state only charges drivers on the Tobin Bridge, at two tunnels beneath Boston Harbor and along the Massachusetts Turnpike, which converted to all electronic-tolling several years ago.

    Beacon Hill leaders have resisted adding more toll roads to the mix, or increasing fees, fearing public backlash over the pocketbook impact on constituents.

    Congestion pricing has also been controversial in other states, including New York, where Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul recently put the brakes on a “first-in-the-nation” plan that called for charging motorists an extra $15 to drive into New York City.

    Backers of the plan, including New York City Mayor Eric Adams, argued the move would reduce traffic, congestion and tailpipe pollution while raising billions of dollars to support the city’s public transit system.

    But the plan was facing several legal challenges, including one by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, who called the new toll charges a “cash grab” that would hurt New Jersey commuters.

    1 dead after car crashes, tumbling into Malibu Canyon

    One person was killed Wednesday after a car careened off the road in the Malibu hills, authorities said.

    The deadly crash occurred about 5:30 p.m. on Malibu Canyon Road near Adamson Flat, less than two miles north of Pacific Coast Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

    The crash shut down traffic in both directions of Malibu Canyon Road, a two-lane stretch that cuts through the Santa Monica Mountains, uniting Calabasas with Malibu and Pacific Coast Highway.

    The road curves along the hills and can be treacherous, with steep drop-offs into the canyon below. The passage has been the site of multiple fatal crashes over the years.

    Aerial footage Wednesday night from KTLA-TV showed a gray-silver vehicle had tumbled more than 100 feet off the cliffside into the brush and rocky ravine below. Firefighters were traversing the canyon to reach the vehicle.

    It’s unclear what led to the crash, which is under investigation by the CHP. The L.A. County Medical Examiner-Coroner responded to the scene; the identity of the person who died was not released.

    In October, 25-year-old Luis Gonzalez died on Malibu Canyon Road when his car rolled over and tumbled over an embankment about a mile north of Pacific Coast Highway.

    In 2022, two vehicles collided along the road, killing 18-year-old Skylar Scripter and injuring several others.

    Wednesday’s fatal crash comes months after four Pepperdine University students were killed when they were struck by a car as they stood alongside Pacific Coast Highway. Then-22-year-old motorist Fraser Bohm was charged with murder and manslaughter. The incident revived safety concerns about speeding motorists in and around the scenic coastal enclave.

    The fourth entry in the brash franchise has its best action scenes yet, hands the reins over to Jason Statham, and brings in Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais for some extra martial arts bona fides.

    Expend4bles stretches the franchise to its limits, and those limits frankly don’t reach very far. There’s a level of self-awareness to Expendables films that can make their paper-thin plotting and characterization excusable — in the end, they’re just a reason to see certain action legends interact with each other. But in a decade-plus of homage, the series hasn’t developed any stylistic flourishes of its own. Mission: Impossible movies have their signature stunts, Fast and Furious movies have their improbable applications of cars, but the Expendables lacks a comparable calling card. There’s nothing for fans to look forward to beyond Jason Statham’s resilient charm and Sylvester Stallone’s braggadocio. And frankly, there are plenty of other places for people who want those things to get them.
