  • Green slime, mold, roaches found at Dallas restaurants; 1 closed for low score

    Two Dallas restaurants failed during the Jan. 18-31 round of health inspections, and another establishment was temporarily closed after receiving a low score, according to data from the city compiled by the Star-Telegram.

    Dallas food establishments are scored on a 100-point system that is different from Fort Worth. A range of 100-90 is considered very good. Anything under 60 is unacceptable and requires closure and inspection before reopening.

    Ceviche Loco Seafood Restaurant at 7861 Lake June Road scored 55 on Jan. 29 and was temporarily closed. The inspector noted fruit flies throughout the kitchen, overflowing floor drains, heavily dented cans and employees who failed to wash their hands.

    Local Tap and Table at 3333 Harry Hines Blvd. received a failing score of 65 on Jan. 31. The inspector found mildew inside the ice machine, nearly two-week old chicken stored in one of the coolers and mold on boxes in one of the storage areas.

    Pho Midway at 17610 Midway Road also failed the inspection with a score of 67 on Jan. 22. Shrimp was held at an unsafe temperature, food debris and black dirt were found inside the ice machine and a pot of food was stored on the floor.

    All failing restaurants require a follow-up inspection within 10 days. Establishments that score between 79 and 70 pass but also require a follow-up inspection.

    Fireside Chicken And Tacos at 18110 Midway Road scored 70 on Jan. 23. The inspector found moldy tomatoes in the cooler, green slime on the ice chute and some foods without a date marking.

    Scrambler Cafe at 18208 Preston Road scored 71 on Jan. 21. Raw eggs were left at room temperature, some cans were badly dented and there was food debris on the can opener. The inspector also observed a roach underneath the grill.

    Taqueria Express at 1909 S. Cesar Chavez Blvd. scored 71 on Jan. 22. Raw beef was stored over raw vegetables, the ice machine was dirty and there was no thermometer in the reach-in cooler.

    Faye’s Fusion at 1011 Corinth St. scored 72 on Jan. 21. Raw meat was stored at an unsafe temperature, some food was stored on the floor and the vent hood filter system was dirty.

    Feng Shui at 2355 Olive St. scored 72 on Jan. 22. The inspector noted pink mildew in the ice machine, fruit flies in the bar and chicken at an unsafe temperature.

    Shin Chon Market and Foodcourt at 11422 Harry Hines Blvd. scored 76 on Jan. 29. Raw meat was stored above the vegetables in the freezer, some employee food was stored with the establishment’s food and the back storage area needed to be cleaned.

    Roaches were found at two other establishments in addition to Scrambler Cafe.

    Maroche’s Bakery and Party at 1227 W. Davis St. scored 83 on Jan. 22. There was no certified food manager on site during the inspection and a dead roach was found in the storage area.

    Rise Southern Biscuits at 2414 Victory Park Lane scored 85 on Jan. 21. One of the coolers was leaking and two roaches were seen next to the dishwasher.

  • 1 Plano restaurant closed for ‘gross insanitary conditions,’ health report shows

    One Plano restaurant was closed and roaches and rodent droppings were found at others during recent health inspections, according to data from the city compiled by the Star-Telegram.

    The city of Plano scores restaurants and other businesses that serve food on a 100-point system. A score of 100 is considered a perfect score and 70 is extremely poor.

    The report includes health violations from Dec. 28 through Jan. 10 and 139 restaurant inspections.

    India Meals Curry Point, at 2108 Dallas Parkway Suite 228 was temporarily closed with a score of 62 after health inspectors observed “gross insanitary conditions.” The restaurant was asked to remain closed until written authorization to reopen was provided by the environmental health division. The restaurant scored a 95 on their follow-up.

    Rodent droppings were found at

    Kuppanna, at 1301 Custer Road Suite 510, health inspectors observed more than five rodent droppings on the floor in a dry storage area. The restaurant scored 82.

    Dead roaches were found at

    Mauro’s Grill And Cafe, 2719 W. 15th St., health inspectors observed five dead roaches under the front counter. The restaurant scored 79.

    Seven other eateries scored below 80:

    • Kooksoo, at 100 Legacy Drive Suite 103. Score: 72.
    • Sucre Cafe, at 6100 K Ave. Suite 104D. Score: 72.
    • TKS Chinese Cuisine, at 3829 W Spring Creek Parkway, Suite 105. Score: 76.
    • Wings Kebab, at 141 W Spring Creek Parkway, Suite 401. Score: 76.
    • Babahan Uyghur Cafe, at 240 Legacy Drive, Suite 110. Score: 77.
    • Ssam King, at 1861 N Central Expressway Suite 125. Score: 79.
    • We’Re Dough, at 3421 E Renner Road, Suite 108. Score: 79.

    A repeat violator, TKS Chinese Cuisine, at 3829 W. Spring Creek Parkway Suite, had multiple repeat violations on both their routine and follow-up inspections. The restaurant was cited by health inspectors for improper food thawing. They scored 93 after a follow-up inspection.

  • These Frisco restaurants had roaches, issues with hot water, inspectors say

    Two Frisco restaurants were closed, and two others had problems with roaches in the latest round of city health inspections, according to the inspection report.

    The report compiled by the Star-Telegram contains data from Dec. 28 through Jan. 10 and 92 inspections.

    Frisco’s restaurant inspections function on a demerit system: When the total number of demerits exceeds 30, the inspector may close the establishment at their discretion. The decision is based on the establishment’s history of compliance, the nature of the violations and other risk factors.

    Two food establishments were closed because of a lack of functioning hot water:

    Vitality Bowls Eldorado, 5105 Eldorado Parkway, had a score of 10.

    Hold My Chai, 5266 Independence Parkway, had a score of 7.

    Two other establishments were noted to have issues with roaches:

    Desibites Frisco, 2525 Main St., had a score of 24. Inspectors observed live roaches on a can opener.

    Shoji Sushi Hibachi, 2575 Main St., had a score of 21. Inspectors observed a live roach in the warewashing area.

  • 1 closed, rodents & roaches found in Fort Worth health inspections

    One Fort Worth restaurant was closed, and two others had problems with rodents or roaches, in the latest round of city health inspections, according to the inspection report.

    The report compiled by the Star-Telegram contains data from Dec. 21-Jan. 3 and 160 inspections.

    Fort Worth’s restaurant inspections function on a demerit system: Zero demerits is considered a perfect score. Restaurants with over 30 demerits are required to fix the worst issues immediately and remedy the rest within 48 hours.

    One establishment was closed for a serious health violation:

    Roy Pope Grocery, 2305 Merrick St., had scores of 19, 17, 16, 10 and 8. The establishment receives multiple types of inspections because it contains multiple departments. The location’s hot water broke shortly before the inspector arrived, and a plumber was already present during the inspection, the owner told the Star-Telegram. The establishment must remain closed until the hot water is fixed.

    Our Brunch Spot, 12420 Timberland Blvd., had a score of 33. Restaurants with over 30 demerits must fix the worst issues immediately and remedy the rest within 48 hours.

    Rodents or roaches were observed at these food establishments:

    • Quality Inn & Suites, 2000 Beach St., had a score of 22. Inspectors observed dead roaches, crickets and a dead mouse under a grill area, according to the report.
    • Rosedale Food Mart, 1201 S. Riverside Drive, had a score of 17. Inspectors observed dead roaches in the light shields.
    • Casa Rita Margaritas, 1445 N. Main St., had a score of 13. Inspectors observed a dead roach on the floor in front of the restroom.

  • 1 Frisco restaurant closed due to no hot water, failing health inspection

    One Frisco restaurant was temporarily closed after failing during the Nov. 2-15 health inspections, according to data from the city compiled by the Star-Telegram.

    The city of Frisco scores restaurants on a demerit system. Those that receive more than 30 fail and may be closed at the health inspector’s discretion.

    Mirchi Indian Cuisine at 12255 Teel Parkway scored 37 on Nov. 13. The inspector noted curd sauce at an unsafe temperature, vegetables with organic matter, and unlabeled chemical spray in the bar area. There was no certified food manager at the location during the inspection, and there was no hot water in the kitchen.

    The city closed the eatery due to the lack of hot water and failing score. Mirchi scored 21 during a follow-up inspection the next day and was allowed to reopen.

    No establishments had problems with rodents in this round of inspections, but one had issues with roaches.

    Tupy’s at 6975 Lebanon Road scored 11 on Nov. 11. The inspector found household pesticides in the kitchen area and a live roach.

    Edoko Sushi and Robata at 5490 Texas 121 scored 6 on Nov. 12. Workers didn’t remove fish from the reduced oxygen packaging before thawing, which is a serious health violation that can lead to the growth of dangerous bacteria, according to the inspection report.
