  • Will Smith’s ‘Emancipation’ role taught him lesson post-slap

Will Smith’s ‘Emancipation’ role taught him lesson post-slap

    [ad_1]

LOS ANGELES — While filming “Emancipation,” Will Smith routinely drew inspiration from the words “sacred motivation” that were written on the front page of a script. But the Oscar winner heavily leaned on the phrase even more in recent months, as he tried to overcome the backlash to his Oscars slap and banishment from the ceremony.

“It’s like when you can locate and center yourself in your divine purpose, you can withstand anything and everything,” Smith said of the phrase that greeted him when he took on the lead role in Antoine Fuqua’s “Emancipation,” which is currently in theaters and will be available to stream Friday on Apple TV+. “Sacred motivation” became like a theme for him and his castmates, Smith said.

The film, completed months before Smith strode onto the Oscars stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock for a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, was a grueling shoot. Inspired by an iconic 1863 photo of the scarred back of “Whipped Peter,” Smith portrays the character Peter — a man who attempts to escape slavery while he uses his wits to dodge slave hunters and brave alligator-infested Louisiana swamps in his quest for freedom.

The photos of “Whipped Peter” were taken during a Union Army medical examination that first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. An image known as “The Scourged Back” showed countless mutilated whip marks on Peter’s bare back that were delivered by his enslavers. The photo contributed to the growing opposition to slavery.

Smith said his character taught him a lesson in overcoming adversity after he faced condemnation, memes and a 10-year Oscars attendance ban. The “slap” seemingly overshadowed his own biggest career milestone, which came later in the night: winning his first-ever Academy Award, best actor for “King Richard.”

The backlash rocked Smith, but Peter ultimately helped steer him back on track too.

“Peter has absolutely helped me through these last few months, just reestablishing within myself in what my purpose is in this world,” Smith said in a recent interview, one of his first since the Oscars. He has repeatedly apologized for his behavior after accepting his ban.

Normally, “Emancipation” might earn Smith some serious Oscars buzz. He’s still eligible for nominations and awards, but can’t personally accept them. Given backlash to “The Slap,” Smith mainly hopes that audiences will still watch Fuqua’s film.

“This movie was so grueling. Literally across the board, everybody had to devote a hefty amount of suffering to what you see on that screen,” Smith said. “So my greatest wish, and I guess I can talk about my greatest fear, is that my team would be penalized for my actions. I’m out with this film that I love and strictly want my people to get their flowers.”

Fuqua knows Smith made a mistake, but he hopes audiences can move past it. The director believes the story about Peter’s search for freedom, fighting to get back to his family and being a catalyst in highlighting the horrific side of slavery in “Emancipation” is much bigger than “The Slap.”

“Peter’s story is so inspiring, especially as a Black man. We go through a lot of things daily, just being Black,” said Fuqua, known for directing “Training Day,” “Equalizer” films and “The Magnificent Seven.” He said his new film tackles how certain elements of racism in America that still occur today.

“For me, it’s a mistake,” Fuqua said of Smith striking Rock on live television. “Hopefully everybody can get back on track and God bless everyone. But we’re talking about 400 years of brutality.”

Bingwa, who plays Peter’s wife Dodienne, credits Smith’s ability to endure the adversity while pushing forward through it.

“It’s in line with the film. I imagine it’s been a tough period,” said Bingwa, who hopes audiences can learn more about Peter’s determination to return home after making a promise. “I don’t want to speak on Will’s behalf, but he’s been an inspiration to so many for so long. I love seeing him with his head held high. Everyone can learn from his experience. I just love the way you took it on the chin, you’re wearing it and walking forward. We’re all human.”

While promoting the film, Smith held private screenings for several influential figures including Rihanna, Tyler Perry, Dave Chappelle, LeBron James and his Los Angeles Lakers teammates along with students at Morehouse College. He garnered a great amount of support from those individuals, giving him somewhat a sigh of relief.

Each time Smith harkened back to Peter’s story, the more he became empowered to share his character’s journey.

“I feel very comfortable in this current situation with this project, with these people,” he said. “I feel cleansed. I feel purified and transformed in many ways. And as one of the lessons from Peter is, ‘Suffering leads to salvation.’ So I am comfortable taking my medicine.”

Only Rihanna could get away with wearing a robe out to dinner. Granted, it is a four-thousand dollar robe from the newest Balenciaga x Adidas collab, but still—the outfit demands attention.

Paired with Balenciaga’s signature knife shoes and XS bag with Adidas’ iconic three stripes, Rihanna was clad in the collab from head to toe. We’re not sure what’s more striking: the bright blue voluminous robe or the matching thigh-high boots.

If this bright monochrome look is now officially on your vision board, you’re in luck: this season, blue is the warmest color, appearing in a variety of shades, coats, jackets, and accessories. Keep scrolling to find your perfect ‘fit, and give “winter blues” a stylish new meaning.

Rihanna Just Wore Arguably the Most Controversial Skirt Style Of All

    [ad_1]

Given how popular trends like naked dresses, visible thongs, and going, wellpantsless are these days, it’s growing more and more difficult to generate controversy when it comes to fashion. And yet, Rihanna just did exactly that by wearing the one trend I personally never thought would make a genuine comeback: High-low hemlines. Leave it to the Fenty founder, though, to make the throwback silhouette feel modern, and even more shocking, cool.

Out to celebrate A$AP Rocky’s whisky brand Mercer & Prince at The Fleur Room in Los Angeles, Rihanna paired a gloved, velvet bodysuit by Melitta Baumeister with a faux leather Rick Owens skirt fit with a high-low hemline and a train. With the daring duo, she added a Tom Ford for Gucci handbag, a Celine hoodie, and strappy heels that laced halfway up her legs. A far cry from the jewel-toned high-low dresses we wore to practically every high school dance in the early-2010s (or was that just me?), the look is singlehandedly paving the way for a comeback of the cut.

Even so, welcoming high-low hemlines back into our wardrobes after all this time won’t be easy. To ease back into the style, shop the more approachable asymmetric skirts below.

  • I Want The 2022 Savage x Fenty Show Look

I Want The 2022 Savage x Fenty Show Look

    [ad_1]

It’s already been a busy year for Ri-Ri. With her new singles for the Wakanda Forever soundtrack releasing, an impending album, and a Super Bowl halftime show on the horizon, she’s non-stop. Following suit, Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty Fashion Show debuted on Amazon Prime last night and it was every bit as showstopping as you’d expect.

It’s not your traditional fashion show with models gliding down runways to a crowd of high-profile names in fashion; it’s a full on production. No crowd was involved whatsoever, but hundreds of models and big names in both the music, fashion, and film industries showed off the new Savage collection.

The show begins with the Fenty Queen herself, wordlessly summoning everyone to pay attention – the show has begun. In partnership with Amazon, every look was linked to the screen as they were shown, giving you instant access to purchase the Fenty set. Seamlessly transitioning from look to look, the beats change and the focus turns to a different model.

What perhaps tainted the night was the inclusion of Johnny Depp, whose addition struck controversy. It indeed begs the question, why include a controversial fallen star? It somehow overshadowed the entire event without even trying.

While the event is the antithesis of the old Victoria’s Secret wings and glitz, Rihanna’s spin was edgier and cinematic. You can view her new collection on the Savage x Fenty website, but for now, here are my faves:

    1. Lineup Pocket Legging
    2. Hotline Medium Impact Sports Bra
    3. Velvet Vixen Unlined Balconette Bra
    4. Going Platinum Long Robe
    5. Hotline Jumpsuit

  • How to Watch Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 4

How to Watch Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 4

    [ad_1]

At this point, the world has come to understand that Rihanna never does anything the “normal” way. From accepting the CFDA’s Style Icon award in a see-through dress to how she announces big life news (remember that baby bump reveal?), it’s all cloaked in drama—and the very good kind of drama, to be totally clear.

The Rihanna version of a fashion show flips the traditional catwalk on its head. It’s an expect-the-unexpected kind of situation, and, luckily, we’re just days away from being gifted with another installation. Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 4 will premiere on Amazon Prime this Wednesday, with Rihanna serving as both executive producer and creative director.

Here are the key things to know ahead of this Wednesday’s show, like how to watch and the special guests to expect.

It’s available to stream on Prime Video.

Like last season’s vol. 3, the show will be streamed on Amazon. Anyone with a Prime membership can experience it just the way the artist-cum-icon intended it to be: as an artistic experience that transcends labels.

Part musical performance, part runway, part cabaret—it’s really a pop-culture fantasia that seems to have crept into the star’s heart and soul and pulled out some very cool stuff.

    Kevin Mazur//Getty Images

    The talent roster is deep.

The names being touted include Anitta, Burna Boy, and Maxwell, and special appearances from Ángela Aguilar, Avani Gregg, Bella Poarch, Bretman Rock, Cara Delevingne, Damson Idris, Joan Smalls, Kornbread, Lara Stone, Lilly Singh, Marsai Martin, Precious Lee, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Simu Liu, Taraji P. Henson, Taylour Paige, Winston Duke, and Zach Miko.

In short, it’s jam-packed with famous faces. Watch and see who you spot in a super glam version of those look-and-find games you loved as a kid.

The visuals, choreography, and overall vibe will be top notch.

Last year’s show won an award for choreography and was also nominated in the production design category, too. It’s an impressive act to follow, but there’s no doubting that this year’s will have the same skilled experts involved in making it all a must-see moment on the fashion calendar. Notes provided ahead of time call it a “visual feast” tapping into “the hypnotic essence of nocturnal nature.”

You can shop it right away.

As in the past, everyone involved in the literal extravaganza will be wearing pieces from the newest collection—and everything will be available to shop immediately in the Amazon Fashion Store. That connection between the high-wattage show and your own living room is exciting—there’s something undeniably cool about getting to see Rihanna in something and buy it for yourself right away (and not have it cost a thousand bucks).

The icon and pals are basically the best salespeople out there, too. Yeah, you can see what a garment looks like on the site’s model, but you can really see what it looks like strutting, spinning, or otherwise living its best life in the Savage X Fenty Show.

The brand’s still committed to a wide size range.

It’s no longer news that anything with the Fenty name means body diversity. The brand’s made sure to bring that commitment into the real world, too, producing everything in an uber-wide range of sizes.

Bras are done in band sizes 30 to 46 and A-H cups (the largest being 46DDD/42H). The lingerie, pajamas, and loungewear in the line ranges from extra-small to XXXL.

Simple, but statement-making.

Suddenly, this look is all we want to wear anywhere. And you don’t have to be a Rihanna-level style star to pull it off. We’ve found a bunch of flared leggings that can be dressed up a la Rih for a night out or dressed down if you’re living that work-from-home life. • Rihanna Talks Super Bowl Halftime Show Performance: ‘I Can’t Believe I Even Said Yes’

Rihanna Talks Super Bowl Halftime Show Performance: ‘I Can’t Believe I Even Said Yes’

    [ad_1]

It was only a month after the NFL announced Rihanna was headlining the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime show that the singer released her first solo single in more than six years. Days later, Rihanna finally broke her silence on what it felt like to accept the coveted halftime gig.

“I can’t believe I even said yes,” Rihanna told ET reporter Rachel Smith on the red carpet for her fourth “Savage X Fenty” fashion showcase. “It was one of those things that even when I announced it, I was like, ‘OK, I can’t take it back. Now, it’s like final.’”

Rihanna agreed to the performance in the midst of an interminable music hiatus during which she became a newfound mother — and the youngest self-made female billionaire after turning her Fenty Beauty fashion line into an empire.

While her return to music with the lead soundtrack single for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” was widely celebrated, Rihanna is solely focused on 2023.

“The Super Bowl is one of the biggest stages in the world, it’s an entertainer’s dream to be on a stage like that,” Rihanna told ET. “But it’s nerve-racking. You want to get it right. You know, everybody’s watching. And they’re rooting for you. And I want to get it right.”

The 34-year-old Grammy winner told the outlet “nothing would have gotten me out of the house if it wasn’t a challenge like that.” She added that she got “real comfortable being at home as a mom” but that the halftime show was “something that I’ve never done before.”

“I want to incorporate different aspects of entertainment and things that I just enjoy and bring it to the stage,” Rihanna said. “I want to celebrate the music that I’ve made.”

Rihanna’s “Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 4” made headlines when Johnny Depp was revealed as a guest star following his highly-controversial defamation trial against Amber Heard. It will also include entertainers like Don Toliver, Maxwell, Taraji P. Henson and Winston Duke.

“Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 4” will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on Nov. 9. The 2023 Super Bowl in Arizona has a firm date of Feb. 12, 2023.

It appears Johnny Depp will be welcomed back into the entertainment sphere with open arms, though it’s not without criticism.

Depp, 59, will make a cameo appearance in Rihanna‘s highly anticipated Savage X Fenty fashion show, alongside a number of other celebrities and influencers.

The 40-minute show is the fourth of its kind for Rihanna’s incredibly popular lingerie and sleepwear brand.

A press release for the upcoming show called the event a “seductive fashion fever dream.” Depp was not mentioned in the press release in the long list of notable people taking part.

Though Depp will not be on the catwalk, his pre-recorded cameo will come halfway through the show, to the tune of Outkast’s So Fresh, So Clean.

Leaked images of Depp for the fashion show have already circulated online.

Neither Depp nor Rihanna has commented publicly on the Pirates of the Caribbean actor’s involvement.

News of Depp’s participation in the show, which was first reported by TMZ, triggered instant conversation on social media, with many calling for Rihanna and her team to #DitchDepp.

Depp remains a polarizing figure following the highly publicized defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, which concluded in June. Depp sued Heard over a 2018 op-ed she penned for the Washington Post, in which she referred to herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” The jury awarded Depp US$10 million in damages and provided Heard a partial $2-million win. Both Depp and Heard have appealed the verdict.

In 2020, Depp lost a similar case in the U.K., in which he sued the British tabloid The Sun for calling him a “wife beater.” A U.K. judge decided The Sun’s claims were “substantially true.” Heard testified in court to back The Sun’s claims. Depp appealed the verdict but was denied.

Though Depp won his most recent case, public sentiment for the actor is very clearly divided.

Many fans of Rihanna, 34, have expressed either their confusion or support for Depp’s participation in the fashion show, given it is widely known that the singer herself was a victim of domestic abuse. In 2009, her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown was arrested and pleaded guilty to physically assaulting Rihanna.

  • What the Hell, Rihanna?

    What the Hell, Rihanna?

    [ad_1]

Someone needs to explain this to me. Because I really don’t understand. Why the hell are celebrities so eager to rally around Johnny Depp in the wake of the Amber Heard trial?

Sure, sexism. Heard was ridiculed and villainized endlessly all over social media, which made the coverage of the trial problematic, to say the least. The case was complex, but the coverage was pretty one-sided. And it wasn’t good for women. Out came all the old tropes, and slowly I saw the progress of the Me-Too era vanish before my eyes. The urge to “Believe Women” seemed to be dead in the water.

But it is beyond your normal sexism. A large part of this tumultuous trial was the meme-ification of Amber Heard during the trial — which millions streamed live for weeks. Social media, especially TikTok, and media outlets participated in this unique form of villainization of Heard. Soundbites and memes of Heard proliferated around the internet, painting her as a manipulative liar or a ridiculous actress. And Depp and his team were celebrated for their “gotcha” moments and impressive story-spinning that inevitably led to a victory for Depp.

“Because the US trial was before a jury, it allowed Depp’s lawyers to focus on Heard,” a well-worn tactic of defendants in domestic abuse cases, an experienced lawyer told The Guardian. “Heard’s team also made tactical mistakes and were outdone by a more experienced set of lawyers, Stephens added. “Heard’s team were not predominantly trained libel lawyers, and they were outgunned at every corner. They were up against a very strong team for Depp,” he said.

We’ll be reckoning with that in about 20 years when a Free Britney-style documentary comes out, and people wonder how we, the media, could have treated a woman like that. A tragic reckoning of the post-Me Too era, the whole debacle.

But ever since Depp was, for reasons still unclear to me, declared innocent, everyone has lost their damn minds. Depp has somehow become painted as the symbol of male survivors of domestic abuse … which is a questionable narrative, to say the least.

Why does this man still have such a hold on the culture? Willy Wonka? Pirates of the Caribbean? I need it to make sense. Because the lengths people are going not just to forgive him, but to absolve him of any wrongdoing, is mind-boggling to me.

So imagine my shock, horror, and, honestly, disgust when the news was announced: Johnny Depp will make a guest appearance at Rihanna’s “Savage X Fenty Vol. 4” as the first male star to be featured.

“Our sources say Rihanna and her team invited Johnny to be a part of it, and both sides were super excited to make it happen,” TMZ reported.

Depp won’t be walking the runway in the show, but he will be featured center stage in one of the show’s “star” moments, as Cindy Crawford and Erykah Badu previously have done. Wearing items from the men’s collection, Depp will be the first male in the history of Savage x Fenty to take this role.

However, unlike other stars featured in this section, Depp has never been known for fashion — his Sauvage commercials are probably the closest he’s ever come to the fashion world. So it’s a strange collaboration that doesn’t really make sense on paper. Especially in light of Depp’s divisive image.

Rihanna … what the hell, bestie?

I love Rihanna. I have bought Fenty makeup. I have ritualistically applied the Fenty skincare. I even splurged on the goddamn Savage x Fenty pieces — and this is what I get in return?

The internet is divided. Some are calling this a collaboration of two domestic abuse survivors. This narrative stems directly from the manipulative genius of Depp’s PR team, which managed to paint him as the victim of his relationship with Heard. This narrative has now been parroted by Depp defenders, despite the murkiness of the trial and the former trials which found him guilty of domestic abuse.

Others are critical of Rihanna’s choice. After last year’s Savage x Fenty show garnered claims of cultural appropriation, Rihanna issued an earnest statement pledging to do better.

Girl, this is definitely not better.

Much of the commentary is anti-Depp. My favorite tweet: “Gross! Rihanna entering her Fenty Flop era?”

I am decidedly disappointed by this development. Especially since this comes right after Rihanna made her triumphant return to music. Suddenly, I am not feeling so triumphant about it. Even our faves make mistakes, but this one will take a minute to get over.

The general consensus seems to be disappointment — not just in Rihanna, but the overall cultural narrative around Depp that has allowed him to emerge from his trial better than ever.

Anyway, here’s what Twitter is saying:

New Sza Music | New Rihanna Music | Pop Divas Are Finally Back

    [ad_1]

First, Beyonce released Renaissance. Then Taylor Swift dropped Midnights. We were still reeling from those two groundbreaking, life-changing albums when the impossible happened: Rihanna announced her new song, ‘Lift Me Up.’

That’s right. New Rihanna just dropped. And it’s stunning, of course.

The new track, ‘Lift Me Up,’ is a haunting lullaby from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack.

Backed by choral voices, Rihanna lets her vocals take center stage for this achingly gorgeous song. She shows off her vast emotional range by flowing from soft, whispered phrases to belting out pleas for safety.

Although the lyrics are simple, they’re gut-wrenching. “Lift me up, hold me down,” she sings, and we’re reminded of the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman. The song was written by Tems and is a tender tribute to Boseman.

I can only imagine how the song will feel when I hear it in surround sound in theatres, watching the latest Black Panther film on November 11th. I’m getting chills just thinking about it.

LISTEN TO ‘LIFT ME UP’ NOW

What a departure from Rihanna’s last iconic, career-defining album ANTI in 2016. 2016!! Can you believe we’ve suffered this drought for so long?

But now Rihanna is making up for it in spades. The jury’s out on whether her other upcoming music will be in the vein of ‘Lift Me Up’. Or is this a vibe she unearthed just for Wakanda? Good news is it’s more and more likely that there will be new music.

We’ve been teased before. We’ve had our hopes dashed. But the signs are pointing to a Rihanna release in the near future. She’s been spotted going in and out of the recording studio. She’s announced that she will be performing at the Super Bowl Half Time Show. And… she’s going on tour in 2023.

Rihanna — take my money! But please give me an album in return!

Rihanna’s not the only one making a comeback. Beyonce and Taylor Swift also plan 2023 stadium tours. This will be a huge year for StubHub, Ticketmaster, and me, I can tell you that.

And guess who else has made a comeback? SZA. It’s Scorpio season, and it seems our resident toxic Scorpio is back with a song we’re sure to hear at every single Halloween bash.

SZA’s latest single, ‘Shirt,’ is taking us right back to her debut album, CTRL, which she released in 2017. The girls have made us wait for soooo long, but SZA’s repenting for her sins by dropping this major banger.

While she’s had hits, features, and singles since 2017, we can only hope that ‘Shirt’ signals that we’ll be getting a full album. 2023 looks like a major year for music and I can’t wait to see what it has in store for us. Though my budget might be less pleased…

    LISTEN TO “SHIRT” NOW

One thing is for sure: the era of the pop diva is back and better than ever. This is one Y2K-era trend that I can get behind. I want my girls to be dominating the charts, the news, and the red carpets just like they did in peak popstar era.

The only person we’re waiting for is Normani.

Girl, where’s the album? If Rihanna can do it — fresh from having a baby, no less — then so can you!

    CNN
     —

Rihanna’s first solo new music in six years is out and tugging at heartstrings.

“Lift Me Up” from the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” soundtrack was released Friday. The song is already a hit with her faithful fan base, known as Rihanna’s Navy.

The singer teased the release of the song on Wednesday. Within an hour of her posting the 14-second teaser, there were more than 70,000 tweets generated about it, according to Twitter.

The new song begins with Rihanna humming the melody before she launches into the emotional lyrics.

“Lift me up/Hold me down/Keep me close/Safe and sound,” she sings. “Burning in a hopeless dream/Hold me when you go to sleep/Keep me in the warmth of your love when you depart/Keep me safe, safe and sound.”

Rihanna also debuted a moving music video for the song on Friday, featuring scenes from the movie.

The song was written by Rihanna, fellow artist Tems, Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler as a tribute to the late “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman.

Boseman died in 2020 at age 43 following a private battle with colon cancer.

There is already plenty of reaction to the song on social media, including one person who threw in a hopeful prediction by tweeting, “just finished listening to rihanna’s future oscar winning song lift me up.”

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Music From and Inspired By” will be released on November 4 and the film hits theaters a week later.

Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” Is A Return to Some of Her Most Iconic Ballads

    [ad_1]

Gradually getting the masses accustomed to her presence among us as a musician again (as opposed to just another beauty and fashion mogul), Rihanna has decided to “reintroduce” herself as only Rihanna could: by releasing a song for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Soundtrack. It feels like a pointed initiation of her upcoming appearance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Arguably the most pressure-filled venue (and, for Ri, the most hypocritical one) a person could choose for a comeback. But it seems Rihanna also wants to remind people of her prowess not just as a performer, but as a vocalist before taking that stage. Thus, she’s given her listeners “Lift Me Up,” co-written by Ludwig Göransson, Ryan Coogler (who also directed both Black Panther movies) and Tems.

The song was penned as a tribute with Chadwick Boseman in mind, a fact that becomes quickly apparent a few verses in. So, of course, it could be nothing other than a ballad, even though many were likely hoping for Rihanna’s first comeback single to be one of her proverbial “bangers.” And yes, considering how “familiar” “Lift Me Up” sounds, it’s fitting that Ri’s last solo effort to chart was the belted-out ballad, “Love on the Brain.” Released as the final single from 2016’s Anti, it showcased Rihanna’s vocals at their rawest and most intense. Just as so many of her other indelible ballads have—including “Stay” (from Unapologetic), “We All Want Love” (from Talk That Talk), “California King Bed” (from Loud), “Cold Case Love” (from Rated R), “Cry” (from Good Girl Gone Bad), “Unfaithful” (from A Girl Like Me) and “The Last Time” (from Music of the Sun).

Building on her long history of nailing this particular style of song while making it all her own (hear also: “Higher”), the single’s album artwork perhaps deliberately harkens back to Ri’s earlier albums, Music of the Sun and A Girl Like Me, in that it’s a close-up shot of her face. Unlike the expressions in the aforementioned albums, however, there is an undeniable tone of somberness to this one, confirmed by the image being in black-and-white. And this is the first instance of one of her ballads being an “homage” track rather than a pining number that addresses love lost or otherwise tainted.

Because of Boseman’s role as King T’Challa, his influence on Black culture markedly escalated at the time of Black Panther’s release in 2018. Just two years later, he would die of colon cancer at the age of forty-three (adding to the general sentiment of, “Damn, this is a really shitty year for Black people” that occurred in 2020). In the span of his seventeen-year career (which began with a recurring role on All My Children), Boseman became an almost god-like figure when he stepped into the part of Black Panther, first appearing as King T’Challa in Captain America: Civil War, which, incidentally, came out the same year as Anti. The fact that Wakanda Forever pays so much of an homage to him with a song like this is yet another testament to what Boseman playing this part meant (and still means) to a great many people. And Rihanna does plenty of justice to the fallen king with her moving lyrics and delivery. Bittersweetly urging, “Burning in a hopeless dream/Hold me when you go to sleep/Keep me in the warmth of your love/When you depart, keep me safe/Safe and sound.” The subjects of Wakanda are surely asking the same of their erstwhile king.

In the second verse, Rihanna contrasts the previous imagery of “burning” with, “Drowning in an endless sea/Take some time and stay with me.” There’s that word she so loves to use in a ballad: “stay.” And yes, parting is such unwanted sorrow. With many who do it, like Boseman, not actually desiring to. The rest of the song’s lyrical composition is fairly simple, but then, that’s the point. For, to reiterate what so many have said in a varying form before her, including The Beatles and Madonna, simplicity is key. Which is why Rihanna insists straightforwardly, “We need light/We need love.” Delivered with a powerful earnestness, the song is even one to rival what Beyoncé did with “Be Alive” for the King Richard Soundtrack.

“Born Again” (which sounds like it could be the sequel to Lana Del Rey’s “Born to Die”), a pertinent title for Rihanna’s own imminent rebirth as a recording artist, will also be released from the soundtrack to further lay the groundwork for the singer-turned-entrepreneur’s musical return. And while most wouldn’t be able to live up to the pressure surrounding such a long hiatus, it seems the break has only sharpened Rihanna’s skills and refreshed her vigor for “the craft.” Given her time to pause and reflect… which should prove to the “Powers That Be” that “allowing” people time to recuperate from overworking isn’t a bane to capitalism, especially not in Rihanna’s case.

    CNN
     —

We can thank the “Black Panther” sequel for Rihanna finally returning to the world of music.

The “Fenty” founder tweeted Wednesday about her forthcoming single, “Lift Me Up,” which is set to release on Friday.

The original song will be featured on the soundtrack to the new Marvel movie, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The song will mark Rihanna’s first new music as a solo artist in six years.

According to a press release, the tune was written by Rihanna, fellow artist Tems, Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler as a tribute to the late “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman.

Boseman died in 2020 at age 43 following a private battle with colon cancer.

“After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them,” Tems said in a statement. “Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”

The song was recorded in five countries and Rihanna shared only a snippet of it on social media.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting new music from Rihanna since her last album, “Anti,” which dropped in 2016. There had been speculation that she would release something new in anticipation of her performance as the headliner for the upcoming Superbowl Halftime Show in February.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Music From and Inspired By” will be released on November 4. The film hits theaters on November 11.

  • Are We Ready For More Taylor Swift?

Are We Ready For More Taylor Swift?

    [ad_1]

It appears that Beyonce, RIhanna, and Taylor Swift collectively agreed to descend from the music heavens to grace our mortal ears with new albums. What a time for female musicians to swoop in and save the music industry as we know it.

On October 21st, Taylor Swift’s tenth album, Midnights, was released and it’s guaranteed to contain a dozen fall anthems. Ever since she announced the new album at MTV’s Video Music Awards, the public has been drooling over Taylor’s every move…and they should.

TSwift is known for her Easter Eggs, meaning no post of hers is unintentional. Little clues and hints about her album and song lyrics are often teased through Swift’s cryptic messages. Even the subtle way she holds a phone can be interpreted differently by many fans.

We know Taylor has been constantly re-recording her old tracks, the most recent being her groundbreaking Red album…but fans still want Taylor to give us new songs to obsess over. She rarely leaves us hanging, constantly feeding us with hit after hit.

There’s been many versions of Taylor since her country-pop self-titled debut album, Taylor Swift. We’ve gotten the heartbroken, lovesick teenage Taylor with albums like Speak Now and Fearless. The vengeful Taylor in Reputation. And more recently, the soft fall Tay with albums like folklore and evermore.

It’s not just the Midnights album that has sent fans into absolute pandemonium…it’s the impending promise of a stadium tour that is confirmed in the UK, meaning a US announcement can’t be far behind.

Teaming up with Spotify, Swift has been slowly releasing quips of lyrics from Swift’s new album. In a statement from Spotify, they shared:

“Listeners around the world have spent many a midnight with Taylor Swift. Through life’s triumphs, celebrations, and hardships, Taylor’s music and lyrics have always been a source of comfort when the clock strikes 12 and beyond. This is why Spotify has teamed up with Taylor to exclusively reveal lyrics from her new album Midnights around the world leading into the album’s release.”

More recently, Spotify took to Times Square to release new lyrics for Swift’s album. The lyrics? “I should not be left up to my own devices…” And now, in the state I’m in, neither should I!

Tickets for the US leg of Taylor’s Midnights tour are expected to go on sale around November, and I’m sure everyone will be fighting for the chance to see her live. More than likely, the best way to increase your chances is by purchasing an album off her website and receiving a presale code. This is the format she is using for her UK tour, so it would only make sense that the US is the same.

It’s about to be an expensive 2023…Rihanna, Beyonce, and Taylor all are anticipating stadium tours and I’m sure they aren’t the last. The likes of Billie Eilish were seen in the recording studio recently, so my pockets are already hurting.

With Midnights out Friday, we are ready for whatever Joe Alwyn-loving Taylor Swift has cooked up for us all. She just shared her release schedule and the credits list, which includes a very “chaotic” surprise. And don’t even get me started on the Karma theory …

I don’t know how the genius that is Taylor Swift can continuously shock the world and come up with new, creative ways to inspire us…but she does time and time again. A new era is upon us.

  • Rihanna to headline the next Super Bowl halftime show

Rihanna to headline the next Super Bowl halftime show

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — Rihanna will take center stage at February’s Super Bowl halftime show.

The singer, who declined to perform in the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show out of solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, will headline the 2023 Super Bowl, the NFL announced Sunday along with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and Apple Music. Rihanna posted an image on Instagram of an arm outstretched holding an NFL football.

“Rihanna is a generational talent, a woman of humble beginnings who has surpassed expectations at every turn,” said Jay-Z, whose Roc Nation is an executive producer of the show, in a statement. “A person born on the small island of Barbados who became one of the most prominent artists ever. Self-made in business and entertainment.”

The Super Bowl will take place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Feb. 12. After years of Pepsi’s sponsorship, the upcoming halftime show will be sponsored by Apple Music.

Rihanna earlier said she turned down a similar opportunity for the 2019 Super Bowl that was ultimately headlined by Maroon 5. At the time, many artists voiced support for Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who protested police brutality against Black people and minorities by kneeling during the national anthem in 2016.

“I couldn’t dare do that. For what?” Rihanna told Vogue in 2019. “Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way,” she said of the league.

Kaepernick accused the NFL of colluding to keep him out of the league in a case that was eventually settled in early 2019.

In 2019, the NFL partnered with Roc Nation (which manages Rihanna) to help pick performers for the Super Bowl and strategize on the halftime show. The widely acclaimed 2022 halftime show featured Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige.

With sales of more than 250 million records worldwide, Rihanna ranks as one of the best-selling female artists ever. Her last album was 2016′s “Anti.” Rihanna last performed publicly at the Grammy Awards in 2018.

In the years since, Rihanna has occasionally teased her music return. Earlier this year, she had her first child with the rapper ASAP Rocky.
