  • Academy of Holy Angels boys basketball player plans for comeback after unexpected setback

    [ad_1]

An Academy of Holy Angels senior hit a basketball career milestone earlier this month. It was a moment Blake Nixon will never forget, hitting his 1,000th career point at the free-throw line.

“It was actually kind of nerve-wracking. I was like, ‘I can’t miss this, can’t miss this,” said Nixon.

It was a goal he had been visualizing since his freshman year.

“I had a Google document right at the start of the year, ‘Road to 1,000 Points,’ so I was keeping track the whole time,” said Nixon.

The moment happened on Jan. 13 in a win against Robbinsdale-Cooper High School. Then, later that week while playing pick-up basketball, his season came crashing down.

“I knew exactly when I heard the knee pop what it was,” said Nixon

He tore his meniscus, ending his senior season. This was an all too familiar feeling for him, as this was the second time he had torn this cartilage, but in his other knee.

“I was just thinking to myself, ‘Why me, why again?” Said Nixon.

The injury isn’t the end for Nixon, who is determined to keep playing in college. He says he’s motivated by two things to get himself back on the court.

“Number one, the little kid, that this is his dream, out in the cold in the winter with his coat on, shooting, but also the support system around me,” said Nixon.

Part of that support system is former Minnesota Mr. Basketball, Wisconsin alum and recently retired pro player Jordan Taylor.

“[Jordan] had a lot of surgeries in the prime of his career, too, so he can relate really well with me,” said Nixon. “He always tells me, ‘Take a couple days to feel sorry for yourself, and then let’s make something happen.”

  • Man charged with murder after neighbors said he was

    [ad_1]

A 25-year-old Edina man faces charges after neighbors reported seeing him “dragging a dead body” out of an apartment on Saturday morning.

According to the criminal complaint, police responded to an apartment complex on the 7600 block of Knox Avenue South in Richfield. The person who had called 911 said that she had seen a man carrying a woman — who already appeared dead — out of the building.

Police found the car that the man had left in, which had run a red light, the complaint says. The car came to a stop outside the emergency department at a hospital, and the 23-year-old woman was pronounced dead after she was unloaded from the back seat.

The man told police that the woman had shot herself. The autopsy showed that she had suffered a gunshot wound to the back of her left shoulder, charges say.

Another man who lived in the apartment building told police that he heard pounding on his door and saw a woman lying on the floor who did not respond to his questions, documents say. He then said he heard a man banging on the window and saw him drag her up the stairs and into a car.

While searching the area, police found a 9mm handgun in the snow on the balcony of the apartment that the man and the victim shared. They also found several hundred grams of marijuana and approximately 70 grams of cocaine in the apartment, the complaint says.

The man faces one count of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree possession of drugs.

  • Weekend I-494 closures to impact MSP Airport access

    [ad_1]

Those traveling to and from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport this weekend are encouraged to plan ahead due to some big closures along Interstate 494.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says starting Friday at 10 p.m., the westbound lanes of I-494 will be shut down between Highway 77 and Highway 100. The ramps along that stretch will close at 8 p.m. Westbound lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.

As a detour, MnDOT says westbound motorists can use northbound Hwy. 77 to westbound Hwy. 62, then southbound Hwy. 100 to westbound I-494.

Then Saturday at 10 p.m. the eastbound lanes of I-494 will close between Interstate 35W and Hwy. 77 for utility work. All ramps will also be closed. Eastbound lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Sunday.

MnDOT says eastbound motorists can detour via northbound I-35W to eastbound Hwy. 62, then to southbound Hwy. 77 to eastbound I-494. All detours will be posted.

The work is being done to “allow crews to continue construction along I-494 and prepare for winter configuration,” according to MnDOT.

  • LomaBonita Market expands, brings Hispanic flavor to Richfield

    [ad_1]

Shopping carts are rolling down the aisles of a Richfield grocery store for the first time in years. LomaBonita Market opened on Saturday, filling over 50 thousand square feet that previously housed a Rainbow Foods.

“It’s special because I think this place has been empty for 7 years,” said Porfirio Castillo.

Castillo and his brothers are the ones bringing life back to the once-vacant building on West 66th Street. Castillo says they’ve been eyeing the space for years and had applied more than once in hopes of bringing their brand in.

“Two years ago we got a phone call, they said we’re ready,” Castillo explained. “I think it’s just the perfect time from God.”

Inside, customers can find a taqueria, cremería, paleteria, carnicería and soon a tortillería.

LomaBonita’s tortillaria will open in about two weeks, making fresh corn and flour tortillas on site. Castillo says they’re hoping to partner with local Minnesota farmers to provide the ingredients.

Though the brothers own five other stores, this one feels different to Castillo.

“This is the first one that we are opening that, we just imagine, dream, and finally there you go,” he said.

Argelia Montano drove over from Saint Paul to check out the store and ordered an aqua fresca.

“I’m so excited to see the Latino and Hispanic community growing,” she said.

Castillo says his family moved to the US from Mexico several decades ago and opened their first shop, a bakery in Crystal.

“That’s the way we started, 20 years ago, really small business,” Castillo said.

Now, he says they’ve had the opportunity to grow and combine ideas from each brother.

  • Richfield senior living community raises $4K for Annunciation Catholic Church

    [ad_1]

A month and a half later, and the Twin Cities community is still healing and feeling the pain of the Annunciation Catholic Church shooting.

Village Shores Senior Living Community in Richfield, Minnesota, is located just a mile from the church, and did something special to make sure those impacted by this violence feel loved.

On Sunday morning, Village Shores hosted a pancake breakfast and fundraiser for Annunciation. It was a moment for this community to linger a little longer in the common spaces and share some much-needed comfort with one another.

“You know that everybody is going through it at the same time,” said Mary Davis, a resident of Village Shores, along with her husband, Merlin.

The Davis family has deep ties to Annunciation Church and School. Mary Davis used to teach there, their children were students at the school, and their daughter was married at the church.

“I feel very proud that [Village Shores] would do something like this,” said Merlin Davis.

“It’s an impact that’s not just felt by the parish and community there, but the ripple effect is literally all around the country and all around the world,” said Mary Davis.

Residents were very generous on Sunday morning, donating over $4,000 to Annuication. They also signed a large card to give to the school, and the Village Shores staff decorated over 100 residents’ balconies with green and blue ribbons.

“Just letting the Annunciation community know that we’re all thinking of you, we’re all here for you and we’re all still praying for you,” said Ann Huseby, marketing director at Village Shores.

While this is a beautiful moment for everyone to come together, Merlin Davis says that donating is just one part of healing. He wants to see more done.

“What I’m afraid of is that it’s not ‘if’ it’s going to happen again, but ‘when.’ Something has to be done to prevent it from happening. We have eight grandchildren and they shouldn’t have to be afraid to go to school or go to church,” he said.

Merlin Davis wrapped some of the blue and green ribbon around his walking cane. When WCCO asked him how long he plans to keep the ribbon on his cane, he responded, “Hopefully when they pass the legislation, I’ll take it off.”

    01:07

Police in the Twin Cities arrested a man in his 30s Sunday morning on suspicion of murder after officers found his dying roommate.

The Richfield Police Department says shortly after 5 a.m., officers were called to the 6400 block of Bloomington Avenue South.

Upon arrival, officers found a 37-year-old woman on the floor in the basement’s bathroom with a large laceration on the top of her head. Despite lifesaving efforts, she died from her injuries, police say.

Officers reported seeing signs of struggle in the basement living area. The Richfield Police Department says the roommate, a 37-year-old man, was covered in blood and had fresh injuries to his hands.

Police arrested the man, saying his description of events appeared to be inconsistent with the crime scene evidence.

    The incident remains under investigation.

Richfield has come up with a fun way to get rid of those pumpkins

Richfield has come up with a fun way to get rid of those pumpkins

    02:16

RICHFIELD, Minn. — Who needs a pumpkin after Halloween, anyways?

Before Richfield residents can throw their jack-o-lantern in the garbage, the city is providing a destructive, yet constructive alternative.

For the first time ever, Richfield hosted a ‘Pumpkin smash’ event Saturday at Veterans Park. The mission? Smash, then compost the Halloween waste.

The city’s solid waste specialist says it’s all for a good cause.

We’re producing anywhere between 1-2 billion pumpkins anywhere in the United States,” said Zach McCarty. “[In a landfill] instead of breaking down in a way that’s beneficial, they’ll end up breaking down and producing methane gas, which is an incredibly potent greenhouse gas.”

When parents and kids alike smashed their gourds, they went instead into a bin for compost.

“Within about 30-60 days, we’ll have a really rich soil amendment that has benefits for any kind of project it can be used for around the state,” McCarty said. “It’s such a unique process that not only benefits our environment by diverting things from landfills, but it’s going to support engineering projects around the county, it’s going to start supporting gardens, farms, it has a lot of potential.”

Just over 15 years ago, huge snowstorm slammed NE Ohio

    [ad_1]

*The above video is of a heavy snow squall in Rocky River earlier this winter*

CLEVELAND (WJW) — Fox 8 meteorologists predict highs in the 60s this Tuesday after some parts of the area got several inches of snow Sunday.

But on this weekend in March of 2008, NE Ohio was digging out from 20 to 30 inches of snow.

The heavy snow really got going in the wee hours of Saturday morning March 8. Many businesses closed in downtown Cleveland and throughout the region.

Records from the NWS show heavy snow fell from Vermilion to Ashtabula County, to Summit County, and throughout the area.

    • Madison 28.5
    • Richfield 24.2
    • Broadview Heights 21.5
    • Vermilion 18.1
    • Wellington 16.0
    • Hopkins 15.0

Gusty winds caused high drifts and white out conditions.

“Heavy snow continued through Saturday afternoon with blizzard conditions at times, finally winding down from west to east during the evening hours,” The Cleveland NWS wrote on its website.
