Jonny Clayton crashed in a stunning six ton-plus finishes to set up a World Matchplay semi-final meeting with Luke Humphries at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens on Friday.

Clayton made it through to the semi-final at the Winter Gardens for the first time after a 16-12 victory over Ryan Searle with a 97.5 average, seven 180s and six ton-plus checkouts, while Humphries held off a late fightback from Damon Heta to win 16-13 in a match with more breaks of throw than holds.

Searle and Clayton locked horns in the opening quarter-final match of the night after the pair dumped out former champions Peter Wright and Dimitri Van den Bergh to reach the last eight.

The opening four legs were shared with Clayton pinning a superb 118 checkout on double 19 to make it 2-2 before ‘Heavy Metal’ landed tops to move 3-2 in front with two 180s and a 106.40 average to Clayton’s 102.23.

The relentless pace of the contest continued with both players pummelling big numbers and huge finishes.

Clayton piled in a scintillating 121 in the eighth leg, but Somerset thrower Searle struck with a 121 on the bull to level at 5-5.

In a barnstorming battle Searle, who produced the performance of the first round to demolish Dutch legend Raymond van Barneveld, before claiming another major scalp to topple 2021 winner Peter Wright in the last 16, fired in a sixth 180 and a 96 finish to regain the upper-hand at 7-6.

Former Premier League and World Grand Prix champion Clayton added a third ton-plus checkout of the match with a 115 to level at 7-7 and he then hit a fourth thanks to a magnificent 124 on the bull to make it 8-8.

‘The Ferret’ capitalised on Searle’s missed dart at tops with a 76 outshot and he maintained his two-leg cushion for an 11-9 advantage with a 100.23 average and 65 per cent at the doubles.

Welshman Clayton broke again with a cool 100 checkout and he then planted a remarkable sixth ton-plus finish with a cracking 122 on the bull moments later to make it 13-9.

And 48-year-old Clayton made it through to his first World Matchplay semi-final by sinking double 15 with his first match dart.

To win this would mean so much for family reasons. My dad’s not very well and I want to do this for him. I’m very emotional. My dad is my biggest fan so I want to do this for him. I’m here still fighting and hopefully I’ll be here this Sunday in the final.

Humphries then took on Australian No 1 Heta, who has embraced the role of pantomime villain with his Ashes-themed walk-ons and he didn’t disappoint as he returned for the third test at the Empress Ballroom.

‘Cool Hand Luke’ survived a match dart to win an epic second round tie-break against Dirk van Duijvenbode and he was in no mood for a repeat as he surged into a 3-2 lead with a 102.3 average.

The 28-year-old sunk a neat ton on tops-tops to move 5-4 in front but Heta remained calm and composed to hang on to Humphries coat-tails on double 16.

Humphries took out 68 regain the advantage at 7-6 before taking a stranglehold on the contest as he opened up a three-leg buffer at 10-7 in a break-fest of a contest – 14 in 17 legs.

Former UK Open runner-up Humphries, who is yet to lift a televised ranking title, gained a rare hold of throw with an 81 finish for an 11-darter and a 12-8 cushion.

He then struck with a 121 checkout to stretch his advantage before holding in the next leg on tops to edge closer to victory at 14-8.

‘The Heat’ was not giving up easily though as he won three legs on the spin with a skin-saving 152 to make it 15-13.

But after missing two darts at tops, world No 6 Humphries completed the win with two double 18s in a match which featured an incredible 20 breaks of throw.

  • Women’s World Matchplay: Noa-Lynn van Leuven set to be first trans woman to play in a TV darts tournament

Women’s World Matchplay: Noa-Lynn van Leuven set to be first trans woman to play in a TV darts tournament

    [ad_1]

Noa-Lynn van Leuven is set to make history at Sunday’s Women’s Matchplay

Trans darts player Noa-Lynn van Leuven talks to Sky Sports about her transitioning period, opening up to her family, the devastation of losing close friends, how winning the Denmark Open left a sour taste in her mouth and facing Beau Greaves at the Women’s Matchplay.

Van Leuven only joined the Women’s Series last year because she has been transitioning, but reaching the Event 12 final enabled her to leapfrog 2022 Blackpool semi-finalist Lorraine Winstanley and secure qualification for this year’s event in last-gasp fashion.

The 27-year-old Dutch debutant will now make history on Sunday by becoming the first trans woman to play in a TV darts tournament.

It is a dream come true for Van Leuven, who said she always “felt different” to the other kids at school when she was growing up, but now feels playing ‘Beau ‘n’ Arrow’ at the Empress Ballroom is her darting destiny.

Van Leuven explains how comments from other players spoiled her victory at the Denmark Open

Van Leuven, who has been working as a chef de partie in her local restaurant, fell out of love with darts and quit before her transition started last year.

She said: “I never really got into a group with people around darts. I was really unhappy with myself so my darts game wasn’t that good. When you’re not feeling great then nothing in life will be really, really good. I quit darts and then I became a happier version of myself but then I really wanted to start playing darts again.

“I tried to enjoy life as much as possible. I transitioned before going through a lot of meetings with a psychologist.”

Explaining to her family and friends what she was undergoing proved one of the hardest moments in her life.

“It was really tough,” said Van Leuven. “I told a really good friend of mine and she was really supportive but she also said I had to tell my mum.

“I think it was about a week later when I told her and a week later I was already at the doctors and I think it took me a couple more months before I told my dad and other family members, but they were all really supportive to me. It was really nice which has really helped me through everything.”

There were a few people that I talked to a lot and then suddenly you don’t hear from them anymore and then you have to hear from the parents that they’re not there anymore. It is devastating,

Van Leuven on losing a few of her friends to suicide

Van Leuven opened up about the pain of losing a few of her friends to suicide at a time when she was offering support to trans people as a moderator.

“There were a few people that I talked to a lot and then suddenly you don’t hear from them anymore and then you have to hear from the parents that they’re not there any more. It is devastating,” said an emotional Van Leuven.

“They’ll all waiting on trans-health care and I think there’s a waiting list of up to three years in the Netherlands before you get your first appointment, so that’s really tough on some people.

“It is way too long to wait because a lot of people in that position are depressed, they’re really unhappy with themselves. They’re not getting the help they need, so it is way too long.”

Van Leuven researched regulations before participating in tournaments. The PDC, together with the DRA (Darts Regulation Authority) disciplinary committee, has now established rules for transgender players.

She finds the darting authorities a breath of fresh air, unlike World Athletics, which has excluded trans women who have gone through male puberty from female events in order to try to strike a balance between inclusivity and making sure there is no unfair advantage.

“I feel devastated by the people that get hit by that,” she said. “I think it’s tough for transgender people to play sports, especially when people know that you’re trans because you have a big advantage until you prove it’s not.”

    Sour taste in Denmark

Van Leuven won the Denmark Open but thought she was going to be stripped of the title

Van Leuven has largely received a positive reaction from fellow female players, including Greaves and Fallon Sherrock, but winning the Denmark Open in May left a sour taste in her mouth, despite securing the biggest title of her career to date.

“After I won there was the presentation on stage and I just had a weird feeling about something that happened on stage. The other players were talking to each other and I felt it was about me,” said Van Leuven. “I was right because someone told me but I just don’t think it was the right place or time to do something like that.

“They were complaining about me, so they had to [come] forward against me and do it altogether [to throw me out of the competition] which kind of ruined the moment. I worked hard for that title. I played really good games throughout the day and in the end I won. People who had match darts against me didn’t take their opportunities but I took mine. It was a deserved win.”

Van Leuven, whose darting hero is Raymond van Barneveld, has been getting her eye in at the local darts shop based in Heemskerk, which is about 35 minutes by road from Amsterdam.

Now it is almost time to face Greaves, who has been the most dominant force in the women’s game having scooped 15 of the last 20 PDC Women’s Series events.

Greaves’ record-breaking 15th Women’s Series title was a whitewash of Van Leuven with a 104 average, but the 27-year-old did claim a shock win over a below-par Greaves in Milton Keynes in May, something which she believes will play on Beau’s mind this Sunday.

Greaves will be quite a proposition for Dutch darts star Van Leuven

“I’m practising not much more than I would usually do. It’s just a tournament like any other. I’m trying to keep the pressure off and I don’t want to do anything more than I usually do because I know what works for me and I don’t want to over practise,” Van Leuven said.

“I couldn’t have got a worse draw but I know I can beat her, I have done it before but I always give her a good game and I play a nice level against her. I just want to give her a good game so may the best woman win.

“It’s on TV so there’s a lot of pressure on me but there’s a lot of pressure on Beau as well. A lot of people are expecting her to win the tournament so that might play into my hands.

“I’ve got nothing to lose. I’m not afraid of anyone. I have just got to bring my A-game to the stage and see where it ends.”

Having spoken to Dutch TV and the Guardian, Van Leuven will prepare to face the world’s media on the eve of her biggest match.

Being in the limelight is something the Dutchwoman might seem unprepared for, but her time in Blackpool will be well spent seeing the sights before gameday.

She promises plenty of fight and a lot of maximums, but knows it will come down to doubles for dough when going up against Beau.

“Last time I played her I averaged 83 and I didn’t even get a shot at a double,” she said. “I thought I played a good game but it wasn’t good enough but it will be different on stage. I’m going to try to hit everything I can.”

Van Leuven added she would give up her role as chef de partie and even sacrifice her favourite chocolate pastry dish for her ultimate dream – a PDC Tour card.

The winner of the Women’s World Matchplay will qualify for November’s Grand Slam of Darts and the 2023/24 World Darts Championship, in addition to the £10,000 top prize.

“I didn’t expect an easy game but he’s not been in the best form. You just never know when he’s going to turn the switch and turn it around. I was quite nervy at the end but just happy to get over the line.”

Peter struggled from start to finish, even though he was in the match. I thought he did well to win eight legs to be fair. Searle was getting more darts than him and he was outscoring him. Searle regressed to his yearly means and it was more than good enough to beat Peter Wright. Anyone can win it and I really believe that.

A look at Rory McIlroy’s best shots from his 2014 Open Championship win at this year’s venue, Royal Liverpool

All eyes are on the top of the Open Championship betting and picking holes in Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler is extremely difficult.

However, this is the one major where focusing on bigger prices and generous each-way terms is a must, especially with strong wind forecast for Saturday, and the best bet is Dustin Johnson.

After a slow start to 2023, Johnson got back into the mix in a major when 10th at the US Open. Crucially, his long game was excellent, and had he putted well he would’ve been asking questions of Wyndham Clark.

Will Dustin Johnson move three-quarters of the way to the career Grand Slam with victory at The Open?

Will Dustin Johnson move three-quarters of the way to the career Grand Slam with victory at The Open?

That aspect of his game has generally looked good on the LIV Golf circuit and his Open record is outstanding. Right from his near-miss in 2011 and even before that when contending at St Andrews, Johnson has looked like a potential winner of the Claret Jug.

Experience is extremely valuable in any Open Championship and Johnson’s includes a round of 65 here in 2014, the joint-best score of the week. He could well make a winning return to Hoylake.

Shane Lowry‘s links record needs no introduction and he also shot 65 during that renewal of the Open, enough to secure his first major championship top 10.

A winner at Portrush five years later and close to the places in two subsequent Open appearances, he should continue to threaten under conditions which favour him after a nice primer last week.

So might Jordan Spieth, who has plenty of good form behind him this year and can be excused from a poor Genesis Scottish Open.

Viktor Hovland and Cameron Young both threatened at St Andrews having failed to make the cut at The Renaissance and Spieth, whose Open record shows nine cuts made from nine appearances and that famous 2017 win, can bounce back. He’s one of the best Open golfers in this field after all.

At bigger odds, it could pay to chance Hideki Matsuyama, who placed on his Open debut and far better suited to this style of golf than recent results would suggest.

He’s had some fitness troubles this year but his long-game stats from all three majors so far have been excellent, bettered only by Scheffler in fact.

Any improvement on the greens and Matsuyama could reward each-way faith and become the latest player to capture this and The Masters.

Ted Kravitz says Daniel Ricciardo could challenge Sergio Perez for his Red Bull spot next season if he’s able to prevent Alpha Tauri from finishing last in the Constructor’s Championship

Christian Horner has explained the reasons behind Daniel Ricciardo’s return to F1 in place of Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri.

News broke two days after the British Grand Prix that Ricciardo would make a surprise mid-season return after sitting out the opening 10 races of the 2023 season having lost his seat at McLaren.

The Australian was in the middle of a tyre test at Silverstone when De Vries was told he would not drive for AlphaTauri from this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix – live on Sky Sports F1, with Sky F1 Junior coverage on Sky Showcase and Sky Sports Mix.

“Nyck is a very capable driver, a Formula E champion, a Formula 2 champion, he’s obviously got a lot of experience, he’s not a young driver as such from an age perspective,” Horner said on the F1 Nation podcast. “And I just didn’t see how it fitted within the junior programme. It was almost a stop-gap.

“It all happened a little quicker than expected, bearing in mind that we hadn’t completed the test. Helmut [Marko] spoke with Nyck and he was the one that obviously had recruited him. He was the one that spoke with Nyck about Lap 11 of the test, I think.”

Nyck de Vries had just 10 races at AlphaTauri before being dropped

Nyck de Vries had just 10 races at AlphaTauri before being dropped

He added: “It was becoming obviously a difficult situation for Nyck de Vries,” Horner explained. “But there was a high expectation on him because, whilst inexperienced in Formula 1, he’s obviously a very experienced driver.

“I think there was a general feeling that Nyck wasn’t quite hitting the mark. And then the question was, what are the options if we were to switch things around?

“And from a Red Bull Racing perspective, the most interesting option for me was to see how Daniel performs. So that was the decision that was made. It all happened pretty quick and here he is for the Hungarian Grand Prix.”

Ricciardo looking at 2025 Red Bull seat

The consensus is if Ricciardo outperforms Yuki Tsunoda at AlphaTauri in the second half of the season, he will put pressure Sergio Perez for a Red Bull seat.

Perez has struggled recently, missing out on Q3 in the last five events and taking just one podium in that same period. Meanwhile, team-mate Max Verstappen is on a streak of six race victories.

Horner confirmed Perez is contracted for next year and the plan is to retain the Mexican alongside Verstappen at Red Bull.

Sergio Perez talks to Helmut Marko as questions continue about the Mexican's future at Red Bull

“At the moment there is something in place [for Ricciardo] to the end of the season. There are no thoughts or expectations beyond that. Our drivers are going to be Max and Checo again next year,” said the Red Bull team principal.

“But it’s always good to have talent in reserve. Daniel is viewing AlphaTauri as pitching for that 2025 Red Bull seat. That’s his goal and objective. By going to AlphaTauri he sees that as his best route for 2025.”

On Ricciardo’s mindset ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Horner added: “First of all, he had to be clear did he want to do it? Stepping into an AlphaTauri is very different to driving a Red Bull car. It will certainly have its challenges.

The thing we need to be sure of: was he up for that challenge of scrapping to get out of Q1? He seemed more than happy to go back into that situation to get back on the grid and be a Formula 1 driver again.

“What you have to remember is Daniel drove for us for five years and won seven races in that period – some incredible performances. He spent three years driving alongside Max and the margins between them at that stage were pretty fine.

“He made the decision to leave the team and explore other options that didn’t work out for him. But the underlining talent was there. Red Bull had a reputation for being hard on its drivers but every driver needs a different scenario, whether it’s an arm around the shoulder or a different approach. We take exactly the same approach with Sergio – supporting him with his moments of difficulty as well.

“The junior team, there are high expectations, but Daniel isn’t a junior driver. He’s already proven himself in the time he’s had with us. Therefore it was about trying to rediscover the form we know he is capable of.”

Rory McIlroy has cancelled his pre-tournament press conference at The 151st Open ahead of his bid for a fifth major victory.

McIlroy, who produced a thrilling finish to win the Genesis Scottish Open on Sunday, had been listed to speak to the media at 9am on Tuesday at Royal Liverpool.

The former world No 1 has now been removed from Tuesday’s schedule and looks set to skip his press conference for the second successive major.

In a statement, the R&A said: “We have been advised that Rory McIlroy will no longer be taking part in a preview press conference.”

McIlroy did speak to broadcast media during Monday’s On the Range show, live on Sky Sports, where the Northern Irishman said he was hoping to build on Sunday’s impressive Rolex Series win.

“Ball striking wise, I think I led the field in terms of stats from tee to green [at The Scottish Open], so that’s something,” McIlroy said. “Great iron play, wedge play, controlling my flight. I’m really happy, I’ve got a new goal, a new purpose and you go again.

“If I get myself into a similar position this week, I will certainly draw on what I did last week. But as of right now and getting prepared for this tournament, all that has to be put on the backburner. I just have to focus on getting ready to tee off on Thursday.”

McIlroy won The Open the last time it was held at Royal Liverpool in 2014, the first of back-to-back major titles, with the 34-year-old looking to draw on those experiences from his previous victory.

“[Winning here] feels like such a long time ago,” McIlroy added. “You’re trying to rekindle the memories as I was driving from the airport last night and getting onto the Wirral.

Sir Nick Faldo has urged McIlroy to act like he “owns the ring” as he bids to end his lengthy major drought.

I was playing well, I was world number one, one of the favourites and all that and I thought ‘yeah, this is my spot, I’m gonna defend winning at Muirfield’.

“He’s got to be feeling good going back to somewhere he’s won before. He’s playing well. I think the most important thing is he just wants to be a golfer right now, give me a bit of space, let me breathe, let me just go and play.

“He’s one of the top few players in the world and it’s probably a nice feeling for him – he knows if he plays really well he knows the names he’s got to beat.

Hungarian GP: Mercedes expecting bigger impact from new front wing, says technical director James Allison

    [ad_1]

Mercedes say their new front wing is expected to have a greater impact in the slow corners of the Hungaroring than it did at the free-flowing Silverstone layout; watch the Hungarian GP live on Sky Sports F1 from July 21-23

    Last Updated: 17/07/23 10:38am

Mercedes brought a new front wing to the British Grand Prix

Mercedes technical director James Allison is expecting the team’s recently upgraded front wing to have a significant impact at the Hungarian Grand Prix, after the new part showed “promising signs” at Silverstone.

In an ongoing overhaul to the initial design of their troublesome W14, the latest addition to the car was a front wing for the British Grand Prix.

It initially appeared as though the new part had failed to deliver the sort of performance gains that had been hoped for, as McLaren leapfrogged the midfield to emerge as Red Bull and runaway world championship leader Max Verstappen’s closest challengers.

However, Allison has now explained the new front wing is geared towards improving performance in slow corners, of which there are few at Silverstone and plenty at the Hungaroring, where Lewis Hamilton and George Russell’s next opportunity to drive the W14 comes.

Asked in Mercedes’ post-race debrief whether the front wing had worked, Allison said: “It’s a bit too early to tell. The new front-wing is of course designed to make us go faster. That’s why we do all our things.

“The specific characteristics of this new front-wing that we are excited about, is that it should improve the balance and performance of the car through the slower range of the corners.

“Now, Silverstone is famous for lots of things but lots and lots of slow corners is not one of them. What we took as a comfort from Silverstone is that in the slower parts of the track, we were looking pretty decently competitive.

Mercedes technical director James Allison is hopeful over the impact of the team's latest upgrade

Mercedes technical director James Allison is hopeful over the impact of the team’s latest upgrade

“That’s a tick in the box for this new front-wing. But I guess it will only be when we get to Hungary, which is a track made up almost entirely of slower stuff, that we’ll get to know for sure.

“Early sings are promising, the new front-wing seemed to do what we expected and hopefully it will bring us more at tracks which have a wider range of slow corners.”

McLaren upgrades could be ‘useful’ for Mercedes

Similarly to Mercedes, McLaren have made major changes to the car they began the season with, and appear to have taken a major leap forward following upgrades brought to the previous two races in Austria and Britain.

Lando Norris finished fourth in Austria, but it was his and team-mate’s Oscar Piastri’s performance at Silverstone that really caught the eye, as the pair qualified second and third, respectively, behind Verstappen before backing up that display with impressive race pace.

Hamilton, who was unable to pass Norris in the closing stages of the race despite having theoretically better-performing softer tyres, described the McLaren as “a rocketship”, and Allison has admitted Mercedes’ technical team have taken note.

“We keep an eye on all the teams as they upgrade,” he said. “We take lots of photos and we try and figure out what changes from race to race. We note when something new or unusual comes along.

“The interesting and unusual thing about the McLaren upgrade is that its lap time effect is quite strong. It’s unusual to have a step of that size of relative competitiveness in the middle of a season and chapeau to them.

“They’ve done a good piece of work there, but that also makes it interesting for us because we have the before and after shots and we know the lap time effect was big.

“So it’s well worth us paying more attention than we normally might to another competitor team’s upgrade because in this case, we know that whatever changed has made a meaningful difference to their lap time.

“It’s quite useful for us to know what that was and see whether it can play into our own thoughts of developing our own car.”

Further W14 upgrades can help next year’s car

While Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said after the race at Silverstone that the team had “no choice” but to “pretty soon” switch their focus to next year’s car, Allison believes there is still important work to be done on the W14.

“We are only just round about halfway through the season and there is plenty more development to come in these cars,” Allison said. “All of the teams will of course be turning their attention to next year and that will defang all of us a little bit in terms of the rate of which we can improve our cars.

“There are absolutely improvements that we would like to make on our current car that we know will also carry into next year. So it doesn’t feel like throwing good money after bad. The feeling is that you are investing in both seasons with those upgrades.

“For us yes, you will see the upgrades coming for a little while longer. I suspect for the others too. What you will get in this next sequence of races is a little bit of yoyoing for position in a very closely packed bunch as upgrades make the difference for one team for a while, until someone else will come out of sequence with another upgrade a race or two later to even things back out.

“Where it will all settle down for the final quarter to one third of a season, we will see. Hopefully we will have our noses in front and be able to have a strong second half of the season.”

Reigning champion Van Gerwen, who underwent dental surgery in June and has been playing through the pain barrier, began his defence of the Phil Taylor Trophy as firm favourite against world No 27 Dolan in the evening session.

Sunday’s bumper double-session saw eight first-round ties take place at the Empress Ballroom, as world champion Michael Smith kicked off his title tilt with a comfortable win over Steve Beaton.

Dolan, nicknamed ‘The History Maker’ after his nine-dart heroics at the World Grand Prix back in 2011, won four of the first five legs to lead Van Gerwen by three, but a stunning 137 from the Dutchman saw him draw level.

Dolan then opened up an 8-6 lead before making no mistake with a clinical 62 finish to move within a leg of a huge upset.

The 49-year-old from Northern Ireland then dethroned the reigning champion by pinning double three.

“To beat Michael van Gerwen on a big stage, I suppose coming into this he had extra pressure, he’s the defending champion. He was unbelievable in Poland last weekend and I know he’s suffering and he’s trying to recover,” Dolan told Sky Sports.

“He probably isn’t getting in as much practice as he would like and it wasn’t the Michael there tonight that we would normally expect, but I am over the moon.

“I made enough opportunities and took enough of them to win the game.”

Brendan Dolan is a quality player, we know that. You can’t be better than these every single night of the year. He is through and let me tell you who else is pleased Michael van Gerwen’s out – it’s the nastiness of this competition. Every single other player in this event is glad that Brendan Dolan won because you don’t want all the big hitters in. There’s now an opportunity for someone to get through to a semi-final or final that they didn’t think would have been as easy.

World No 1 Smith avoided the same fate as Van Gerwen, defying a below-par performance to defeat the evergreen Beaton, making his 22nd World Matchplay appearance at the age of 59.

The opening exchanges were dominated by missed doubles, but a majestic 161 finish from Smith in leg five catapulted him into a 4-1 lead, and the St Helens star converted a further two ton-plus finishes to wrap up a comprehensive 10-2 win.

“I didn’t miss a thing in practice, but I came up here and I didn’t produce,” conceded Smith, who was left frustrated by his performance, despite the result.

“I think I tried too hard instead of relaxing. There’s a lot of room for improvement, but I’m still in the tournament and I’ll take the win.

“I won ugly, and that’s something I wasn’t able to do a couple of years ago. I know the game is there, and hopefully I can produce it on Tuesday night.”

Luke Humphries produced the performance of the tournament so far in his 10-2 demolition of Jose de Sousa, averaging almost 102 to see off the former Grand Slam champion.

In the afternoon session, Dirk van Duijvenbode won through a thrilling tie-break against Kim Huybrechts, surviving two match darts to condemn the Belgian to his eighth first-round exit in nine World Matchplay appearances.

Chris Dobey ended his winless run at the Winter Gardens with a gripping 10-8 victory over 2007 champion James Wade.

Larry Nassar, a disgraced sports doctor who sexually assaulted gymnasts including Olympic medallists, has been stabbed multiple times in federal prison

Disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar, who sexually assaulted gymnasts including Olympic medallists, was stabbed multiple times during an altercation with another inmate at a federal prison in Florida on Sunday.

The 59-year-old was reported to be in a stable condition.

Nassar, a former doctor for USA Gymnastics, was convicted and sentenced to upwards of 300 years behind bars in 2018 after being accused of abuse by more than 250 athletes – including four-time Olympic champion Simone Biles. Separately, he also pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

During victim impact statements in 2018, several athletes testified that over the course of Nassar’s more than two decades of sexual abuse they had told adults what was happening, including coaches and athletic trainers, but that it went unreported.

More than 100 women collectively sought more than $1 billion from the federal government for the FBI’s failure to stop Nassar when agents became aware of allegations against him in 2015.

Michigan State, which was accused of missing chances over many years to stop Nassar, agreed to pay $500 million to more than 300 women and girls who were assaulted by him. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee also made a $380 million settlement.

In June 2022, the Michigan Supreme Court rejected a final appeal from Nassar. Attorneys for Nassar said he was treated unfairly in 2018 and deserved a new hearing, based on vengeful remarks by a judge who called him a “monster” who would “wither” in prison like the wicked witch in “The Wizard of Oz.”

“I just signed your death warrant,” Ingham County Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said of Nassar’s 40-year sentence.

The state Supreme Court said that Nassar’s appeal was a “close question” and that it had “concerns” over the judge’s conduct. But the court also noted that Aquilina, despite her provocative comments, stuck to the sentencing agreement worked out by lawyers in the case.

“We decline to expend additional judicial resources and further subject the victims in this case to additional trauma where the questions at hand present nothing more than an academic exercise,” the court said in a two-page order.

More than 150 victims spoke or submitted statements during an extraordinary seven-day hearing in Aquilina’s court more than four years ago.

“It’s over. Almost six years after I filed the police report, it’s finally over,” said Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to publicly accuse Nassar.

Max Verstappen was thrilled after picking up his fifth pole position in a row

Max Verstappen has admitted he is unsure which of his Red Bull team’s Formula 1 rivals currently pose the biggest threat to his dominance.

Verstappen, who leads the world championship by 81 points from team-mate Sergio Perez, topped qualifying at the British Grand Prix on Saturday to claim a fifth successive pole position and will have the opportunity to seal a sixth-straight race victory on Sunday.

The Dutchman will also be looking to extend Red Bull’s streak of nine successive wins to start the season, with his victory at last year’s Abu Dhabi finale meaning a win at Silverstone will see them tie McLaren’s record of 11 straight triumphs.

Amid Red Bull’s early-season dominance, Mercedes, Ferrari and Aston Martin have competed fiercely for podium finishes, and McLaren now appear to have joined that battle after their upgraded car enabled Lando Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri to claim second and third, respectively, behind Verstappen on Saturday.

Asked by Sky Sports F1 who he considers to be the biggest threat, Verstappen said: “I don’t know.”

“I don’t mind, as long as they just keep shuffling around, they just keep stealing points from each other, so that’s great.”

The combination of Red Bull’s dominance and the inconsistency of the teams behind them has enabled the reigning constructors’ champions to build a 199-point lead over second-placed Mercedes.

Aston Martin trail the Silver Arrows by just three points, with Ferrari only 21 points further back.

A torrid start to the season has seen McLaren score just 29 points, with the bulk of those coming when Norris took fourth in Austria last weekend.

Verstappen isn’t yet totally convinced McLaren will remain in the battle at the front, particularly given the damp conditions at Silverstone on Saturday, but was pleased to see another team move into contention.

“Today, because of the weather, probably that shuffled around quite a bit,” Verstappen said.

“It’s really nice to see (McLaren do well). They had a really rough start to the year, but they kept on pushing, kept on bringing quite good upgrades, and I’m very happy for them that they had such a good qualifying.

“I think they needed it as well, and I can only imagine it’s a great boost for everyone within the team. You could see how happy everyone was in that garage. So great to see and nice for the drivers as well to finally have a competitive car, because I think also that will motivate you even more to do well.”

‘Five poles in a row is amazing’

Verstappen had claimed four consecutive poles during his intense 2021 title battle with Lewis Hamilton, but had never previously managed to string together five.

“To be on pole again is of course amazing,” he said. “I’m also not used to that, being on pole five times in a row, but it’s definitely a great feeling.”

It could have easily been different on this occasion with the wet conditions early in qualifying, along with a red flag that set up a one-lap shootout, left every driver in danger of being knocked out.

Verstappen’s challenge was heightened by the fact that during the red flag delay, in which the track dried out, he drove straight into the pit wall on his way out of the garage.

The contact resulted in heavy damage to his front wing, which meant the Dutchman was forced to head out last after his mechanics fitted a new nose.

“Luckily in the end Q1 all worked out even though I had my little pit lane incident,” Verstappen said.

“I just understeered into the wall, which was a bit odd. I just drove out and it didn’t grip, it just went straight.

“Then of course we had to put a new wing on that meant we were at the back of the line. So then my out lap was very crucial, I had to just push flat out, I had to pass a few cars and then still with a bit of traffic, managed to navigate my way through it.

“Luckily it worked out but it could have also easily been out in Q1.”

Zharnel Hughes is targeting world glory after regaining the British 100m title

Zharnel Hughes eyed the world title after becoming British 100m champion for the first time in eight years.

The new national 100m record holder, who broke Linford Christie’s 30-year time last month, won in 10.03 seconds in torrential rain ahead of Reece Prescod on Saturday.

The heavens opened in Manchester just before the race and knocked out some electrics at the Regional Arena, with the BBC’s feed also going down.

But Hughes impressively powered through to target next month’s World Championships in Budapest.

“I will use this to get faster and become a global champion,” he said. “It has been a long journey to get the title back I last won in 2015. I thank my team, my coach and everyone who came to support me.

“I shall come back for the 200m on Sunday and hope the conditions are better. I really must thank each and every one of the crowd for watching in these terrible conditions.

“Come rain, sun or shine you perform regardless is the slogan in Anguilla. I train in these conditions sometimes in Jamaica but I am soaked, these conditions are the worst ever.”

Eugene Amo-Dadzie, an accountant who competes part-time and ran 9.93 seconds last month, came third and is likely to get the final 100m spot for Hungary.

CJ Ujah, back from a drugs ban following a positive test at the Olympics two years ago – which cost Team GB their 4x100m silver – was fifth.

Dina Asher-Smith clocked 11.06 seconds to win the 100m women’s race. The final was delayed after the torrential rain which forced the athletes back inside.

Asher-Smith is gearing up for next month’s World Championships, with the weekend doubling up as the British trials.

She remains well behind Jamacia’s Shericka Jackson’s world-leading time of 10.65 seconds, while Sha’Carri Richardson ran 10.71 seconds en route to winning the US Championships this weekend.

Asher-Smith’s personal best, and national record she set in 2019, remains 10.83 seconds – which she equalled when finishing fourth in Eugene last year.

She said: “It was probably colder at Gateshead Diamond League but today we had the not knowing if the race would got ahead, the waiting, going out, coming in, lightning, wind.

“This is the first time I had to really make sure I stay focused which is good practice and lessons to be taken about how you deal with it.”

Asher-Smith was never challenged, with rival and last year’s champion Daryll Neita focusing on Sunday’s 200m, as Imani Lansiquot and Bianca Williams finished second and third.

Earlier, Keely Hodgkinson reached Sunday’s 800m final by winning her heat in two minutes 01.16 seconds.

The 21-year-old came second at last year’s World Championships to the USA’s Athing Mu having also won silver – behind Mu – at the Tokyo Olympics two years ago.

She said: “Every person has said, when I’ve said I’m doing the British Championships, ‘why?’

“Last year I missed doing it, even though I was doing the 400m it didn’t get my adrenaline up because it’s not my event. Everyone was taking it so seriously and I was like ‘I don’t belong here.’

“I like doing the British Champs, another title under my belt – hopefully – and I live here, it’s my training track as well.”

Laura Muir, who split with long-term coach Andy Young earlier this year, won her 1500m heat as she looks to move on from a tough period.

“I think I just can go back to enjoying it. Which is the most important thing,” she said.

“It’s been very difficult. I’ve been injured before, physically, and it’s been a lot harder this year. ‘ll take a physical thing over this any day.”

Matthew Hudson-Smith, who won 400m bronze in Eugene last year, reached Sunday’s final in 46.31 seconds, while Holly Bradshaw missed out on her 11th British outdoor title in the pole vault to Molly Caudery.

A horrific crash in the opening lap of the 2022 British GP saw Zhou Guanyu’s Alfa Romeo flip upside down and go over the safety barriers

Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu says he returns to Silverstone with “a bit more emotion than usual” a year on from his terrifying crash.

Zhou was involved in one of F1’s scariest accidents at last year’s British Grand Prix as his car was flipped over by contact at the start of the race, before hurtling through the gravel and then launching over the tyre barriers. It was then trapped in a small gap in front of the catch fencing and spectators.

After a nervous wait, Zhou was eventually recovered from the car and, incredibly, was cleared of any significant injuries.

The Chinese driver has not rewatched the incident since while Silverstone have made amendments to the Turn One run-off area to try and prevent a similar incident from occurring in future.

“For me even to think about what happened that day I have to proper wind back to what actually happened,” Zhou said ahead of this weekend’s race.

“At the minute it is off of my mind, it’s at the back, it’s in the past. Obviously it always feels a bit more emotion than usual coming back to Silverstone and I’m actually looking forward to it as last year was a good run before what happened on the Sunday. I like the track in general.

“Thankfully not [had dreams of the incident]. What I did was after Sunday I was in the medical centre so I had a look at what happened because somebody hit me from behind. When this happened, I know what happened to make me flip and since then I’ve never watched any video of the incident since that day until now.

“It was a huge crash, of course a scary one, but nothing really distracted me after that.”

What’s been changed at Turn One?

The straight-ahead gravel part in the run-off in Turn 1 has been replaced with a 40x40m asphalt section.

It was Zhou’s car digging into the gravel trap that had caused it to then flip over the tyre barriers and into the catch fencing behind.

“They’ve taken some action in terms of the run-off area for Turn One. That is the right direction for us in case something happens,” Zhou said.

Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle said in April: “We’ve done a load of work this winter.

“There’s a big piece of asphalt out the front rather than the gravel.

“This is to stop them digging in. It’s the digging in bit that was the real issue there.”
