  • Upcoming Food Events: Don’t Miss the Bayou Goo Shake – Houston Press

    Need a last-minute Thanksgiving idea? EZ’s Liquor Lounge, 3301 White Oak, is hosting its annual Thanksgiving community potluck on Thanksgiving Day, with owner Matt Tanner serving up his signature Goose & Andouille Gumbo.     Now through Sunday, November 30, Burger Bodega and House of Pies are teaming up on a  Bayou Goo Pie Shake ($10), available at Burger Bodega, 4520 Washington, Thursday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The shake blends House of Pies’ beloved Bayou Goo – featuring layers of velvety sweet cream cheese, pecans, vanilla custard and chocolate shavings – into a classic Burger Bodega milkshake, finished with milk chocolate shavings. 

    In honor of 15 years since opening their first shop in Miami, PINCHO is celebrating in Miami and Houston, throwing it back with fan-favorites from its vault of craveable specials. From November 28–December 4, folks can dig into the Cartel Burger and Cartel Hot Dog – your choice of signature beef patty or all-beef dog topped with cheddar, bacon, papitas, pink sauce and mango sauce, all tucked into a butter-toasted brioche bun. 

    The Kid, 1815 North Durham, hosts a one-night Cocktails for a Cause event on Friday, December 5 from 4 to 9 p.m., raising funds for Kids’ Meals Houston. Guests can sip two specialty cocktails – the Comeback Kid made with bourbon donated by Redemption Bourbon and the Kids’ Table featuring cantaloupe syrup and lime – with 100 percent of proceeds benefiting the nonprofit’s mission to fight childhood hunger. Children are welcome until 7 p.m. and Happy Hour food pricing runs until 7 p.m. 

    Whiskey Cake is throwing a Prohibition Party across all Houston locations on Friday, December 5, where the whiskey flows legally and the mischief is encouraged. Expect live music, hand-rolled cigars on the patio and bartenders slinging bootleg-inspired cocktails from Whiskey Cake’s scratch bar. Doors open at 7 p.m., the band starts at 8 and guests are encouraged to dress the part. Admission is free.

    Brasserie 19, 1962 West Gray, is kicking off the holiday season with a high-energy holiday edition of its signature monthly brunch party, Santa Le Brunch de Funk, held on Saturday, December 6 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Expect melted raclette, holiday cocktails and a live DJ spinning seasonal favorites and chic brunch beats. Guests are encouraged to arrive in Christmas sweaters or cozy pajamas.

    The Audrey, 9595 Six Pines, will host a Holiday Nutcracker Tea on Saturday and Sunday, December 6–7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering an enchanting morning filled with seasonal magic. Guests can enjoy elegant teas, festive bites, and visits from Nutcracker ballerinas — including Clara and her mischievous mice — dancing through the dining room for charming photo ops.   • Upcoming Food Events: $5 ‘Tinis and a Havana Holiday – Houston Press

    Emilia’s Havana, 1800 Post Oak, is bringing a little Cuban heat to the season with Havana Holiday, a ticketed pop-up experience at the speakeasy-style lounge inspired by 1950s Cuba. Running through December, the pop-up features live music, elegant holiday décor and a limited-edition cocktail menu created with Royal Wine, Rémy Cointreau and Bacardi, including festive sippers like the Santa Clausmopolitan, GingerBERG Nog and Dubai Chocolate Martini. Wednesday hours run 5–10 p.m. with the kitchen open until 9 and a $25 cover that includes the first cocktail. Thursday offers dinner seating from 6:30–9 p.m. and cocktails and light bites from 10 p.m.–close; Friday and Saturday carry a $50 cover (Thursday–Saturday) that also includes the first drink and no minimum spend.

    This season, Berg Hospitality is giving Houstonians a reason to pause with its new “5 at 5” special — $5 mini martinis during the 5 o’clock hour across many of its concepts. For a limited time, guests can stop by on weekdays from 5 to 6 p.m. for a perfectly chilled mini martini made their way. The special is available at Annabelle Brasserie, B&B Butchers, B.B. Italia Bistro & Bar, Emilia’s Havana, Prime 131, Real Agave, The Annie Café & Bar, The Sylvie, Trattoria Sofia, Turner’s and Turner’s Cut.

    PKL Social, 1112 Shepherd, is getting the holiday weekend started with an all-day Friendsgiving Happy Hour on Wednesday, November 26, featuring $1 wings and drink specials. Bring a canned good to support the Houston Food Bank Drive and your first beer is free. On Friday, November 28, folks can hit PKL’s second annual Thanksgiving Classic Tournament, offering a fun excuse to get out of the house and enjoy some friendly post-holiday competition.

    Medium Rare will debut its iconic Thanksgiving Day tradition, the Turkey Fry, in Houston this year, open to anyone who brings a fully thawed turkey (up to 10 pounds) to be safely fried — for free — by the experts. Bring your bird to Medium Rare Houston, 3201 Louisiana, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27. While Medium Rare co-owner Mark Bucher assures they will try to get to everyone, it is a first-come, first-served basis. 

    On Saturday, November 29, Bas’s Cheesesteaks will be popping up at Third Place, 420 East 20th, slinging its Philly style cheesesteaks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or until sold out). The thinly-sliced halal ribeye comes loaded into seeded hoagie rolls with mayo and melty white cheese with (or without) grilled onions, with add-ons including sweet, bell, hot, or Italian long hot peppers, habanero aioli and ketchup. Meals can be rounded out with fries and/or a Pudgy’s deli cookie. 

    Traveler’s Cart, 1401 Montrose, recently transitioned from counter-service to full-service as owners Thy and Matthew Mitchell evolve the concept to put an even greater emphasis on service and hospitality. With the full-service transition comes several new offerings, including Thai Chili Queso, Baja Shrimp Tacos, Chicken Lo Mein, Salmon Donburi, Chicken Parmesan, Vietnamese Cha Ca and Steak Frites. New cocktails include a Mexican Espresso Martini and a Pandan Sticky Rice Old Fashioned.

  • Upcoming Houston Food Events: Eat Good, Honor Vets

    On Friday, November 7, Asia Society Texas Center will host its  2025 Night Market from 6 to 10 p.m. The all-ages festival brings together food trucks, retail vendors, a beer tent and cultural performances celebrating Houston’s AAPI communities. Admission to the outdoor market is free; indoor exhibits and performances carry ticketed entry from $5 to $10. 

    Whisky enthusiasts can join Brennan’s for its 17th annual Wild Turkey Trot Spirit Round Table on Monday, November 10, led by whiskey connoisseur Ed Guiney and featuring straight pours of Wild Turkey and Russell’s Reserve paired with Creole-style hors d’oeuvres. The event runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $50 per person plus tax and gratuity.

Guests can dig into some of Houston’s best barbecue, enjoy drinks and live music, and bid in a silent auction to support CIS programs that provide academic and mental health services to local students. In addition, throughout the day, the Montrose location, 1201 Richmond, will donate 100 percent of food and beverage sales to CIS. Tickets for the evening fundraiser start at $300 per person, with table options available.

    Pondicheri, 2800 Kirby, is ushering in the Festival of Lights with a festive Diwali Thali, available in-house from Saturday, October 18 through Monday, October 20. For $28 (vegetarian), $32 (chicken) or $35 (lamb), enjoy a platter featuring 7-Vegetable Stew, Rajma Chaat, Carrot Paratha, Fresh Fruit, Besan Mithai, and a choice of Paneer Kebab, Chicken Kebab or Lamb Kebab. 

    Now through Tuesday, October 21, guests can celebrate the Festival of Lights at Musaafer, 5115 Westheimer, where chef Mayank Istwal presents a dazzling six-course tasting menu inspired by the vibrant art and spirit of Diwali. Each dish draws from a different region of India, translating traditions like Rangoli and Mandala art into stunning, edible works of color and symmetry. The menu runs $120 per person and reservations are required.

    Bar Buena, the moody new bar tucked just behind Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina, 2002 West Gray, continues its bi-monthly “Meet the Maker”  series with an intimate tasting session from Carabuena Tequila, held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 22. Cost is $30 per person.

    The Rare Steak Championship takes over at Post Houston, 401 Franklin, on Wednesday, October 23. Steak enthusiasts can join over 25 of Houston’s top steakhouses and chefs for an evening of unlimited steak sampling, creative cocktails, live music and spirited competition. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets start at $145.31.

    Trill Burgers and ChòpnBlọk mark the final cycle of ChòpnBlọk’s Celebration Circuit honoring its one-year anniversary of its Montrose flagship with a special takeover. On Thursday, October 23 from 9 to 11 p.m., Ope Amosu and the ChòpnBlọk crew will take over Trill Burgers, 3607 South Shepherd, with West African-inspired takes on Trill’s signature burgers and tenders.

    The 7th annual A Taste of Cy-Fair returns Friday, October 25 to Bridgeland’s Lakeland Village Center, bringing an evening of food, drink and community spirit. Guests can dig into bites from dozens of local restaurants, sip fine wines and craft brews and enjoy live music under the stars while raising money for a great cause.     On Wednesday, October 15, highly anticipated Energy Corridor concept Kirkwood is teaming up with The Lymbar for an exclusive multi-course wine dinner featuring the wines of DAOU Vineyard. The special evening will be held at The Lymbar, 4201 Main, beginning with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the wine-paired dinner at 6:30. Highlights include a decadent Lobster Ballotine, richly layered Braised Short Rib and a trio of sweet and savory bites, including Sticky Toffee Pudding and Roquefort blue cheese.   • Upcoming Houston Food Events: Chefs Battle and a Hot New Restaurant Debuts Lunch

    Mark your calendars, because you don’t want to miss these deliciously fun culinary happenings:

    On Monday, September 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Third Place, 420 East 20th, will host Diane and Willet Feng of Burger Chan for a one-day pop-up of their Borrowed Goods concept, this time, featuring coconut curry beef rendang lasagna and and fresh spinach lasagna.

    Lombardi Family Concepts will host its second annual Chef Battle Royale with head-to-head competitions at two of its Houston restaurants, with two nights each offering a five-course menu, side-by-side tastings paired with Noble Wine and voting to crown the evening’s winner. On Wednesday, October 1, diners can experience the culinary showdown at Lombardi Cucina Italiana, 1745 Post Oak, and on October 22 at Toulouse Café and Bar, 2180 West Gray, where executive chefs Mauro Gianinazzi and Emmanuel Hodencq will swap cuisines to tackle each other’s specialties. Tickets are $250++ per person.

    Mayahuel, 811 Buffalo Park Dr. Suite 130, will debut weekday lunch service beginning Wednesday, October 1, available Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chef Luis Robledo Richards brings a modern Mexican approach to midday dining with dishes like tortilla soup in a tomato-ancho broth, cochinita torta, and chicken milanese, plus a rotating prix-fixe menu featuring a starter, dessert, and a taco trilogy based on fresh market finds.

    Spooky season means that Nickel City, 2910 McKinney, will once again transform into cclaimed Halloween pop-up Black Lagoon, rocking a darkly immersive atmosphere and brand-new cocktail menu from October 1–31.

    Folks are invited to PAWZtober Fest at The Original Ninfa’s Uptown, 1700 Post Oak, on Saturday, October 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The free Tex-Mex fundraiser benefs Lone Star Pawz, a local animal rescue for cats and dogs; and guests can enjoy live music from The Guzzlers, raffle prizes including Houston Texans and Astros tickets, and 20 percent off their meal with a raffle ticket purchase.

    The 21st annual H-E-B Wine Walk hits The Woodlands Resort, 2301 North Millbend, on Saturday, October 4 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., featuring more than 50 wine tasting tents, 40 craft beers and dozens of culinary offerings from top local restaurants and chefs. Tickets start at $79 for general admission.

    On Wednesday, October 8, James Beard Foundation will host its Taste America walk-around tasting at The Post Oak Hotel, 1600 West Loop South, featuring more than 20 Houston chefs, including TasteTwenty honoree Ope Amosu of ChòpnBlọk. Beginning at 7 p.m. (6 p.m. VIP), guests can enjoy bites like African Palm Butter Chicken, Tuna Tiradito, Coconut-Vanilla Bean Flan, and Pad Thai–Oatmeal Fluffernutter while enjoying beverages and activations from national and local sponsors.     On Thursday, September 25 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., The Periwinkle Foundation’s annual Iron Bartender competition returns to Lyric Market, 411 Smith, bringing together six top bartenders from Houston’s best bars and restaurants. Guests can sip on competing cocktails, vote for the People’s Choice Award, and watch as one finalist takes home the Iron Bartender title.     Caracol, 2200 Post Oak, continues its regional Mexican tasting menu series with a deep dive into the vibrant cuisine of Jalisco, the birthplace of mariachi, tequila and birria. The four-course menu runs $75 per person plus tax and gratuity, with an optional beverage pairing for $36, offered during dinner service Monday through Saturday now through September 27.

    Central Market is bringing the flavors of Germany to Texas with its in-store Passport Germany event, running September 10–23.     Hidden Group’s exclusive omakase restaurant, Hidden Omakase, in partnership with its other restaurants, Sushi by Hidden and Norigami, are hosting a special “Tuna Breakdown” Dinner at Norigami and Hidden Bar, 2715 Bissonnet, on Wednesday, June 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. for $300 per person. The dinner will feature chefs Jimmy Kieu and Marcos Juarez breaking down a 300-pound Bluefin Tuna to create 15 courses utilizing all parts of the fish.

    Brennan’s of Houston, 3300 Smith, is hosting an exclusive Macallan Tasting on Friday, June 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Macallan Flight will include The Macallan 12-year Sherry Oak, The Macallan 15-year Double Cask and The Macallan Harmony Intense Arabica and light bites will be prepared by the kitchen team.

    The oldest craft brewery in Texas and Houston, Saint Arnold Brewing Company, celebrates 30 years of brewing beer with a festival on the Saint Arnold campus, 2000 Lyons, on Saturday, June 8. The festival will feature several marquee musical acts from the Bayou City collaborating for the first time, including Kam Franklin, Devin the Dude, Robert Ellis and Fat Tony. General Admission is $15 with food and drink available for purchase. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the party runs from 2 to 10 p.m.

    On Sunday June 9, chef Chris Shepherd is reuniting a few of his favorite proteges, including Feges co-owners Patrick Feges and Erin Smith, Victoria Dearmond, JD Woodward, Lyle Bento, Chris Bednorz and Lucas McKinney, for a special Back to the Future dinner, held at Feges BBQ Spring Branch, 8217 Long Point, at 5 p.m. Expect dishes like PB&J Wings, Cola Soy Pickled Deviled Eggs, Cha Ca Crab Cakes, Goat Dumplings and Vinegar Pie Squares alongside wine and beverage selections hand-picked by Southern Smoke beverage director Matthew Pridgen. Tickets are $200 and all proceeds from the tickets will go directly to Southern Smoke’s Emergency Relief Grants and Behind You mental health program.

    Mark your calendars, because you don’t want to miss these deliciously fun culinary happenings:

    Spicy Chilled, the refreshing, brothless cold ramen dish, is back at all six Texas locations of Ramen Tatsu-Ya, including Houston’s location at 1722 California. The warm weather staple features spicy ramen with citrus soy dressing, ajitama (marinated soft boiled egg), cucumber, tomatoes, pirikara (which means “spicy” in Japanese) ground pork, chili oil, scallions and karashi mustard, giving it a wasabi-like punch. The dish’s official beverage pairing — Kyuri Kup — also returns, combining cucumber, simple syrup, yuzu and citrus over ice for a refreshing drink to help tame the ramen’s heat. Guests can choose to make the beverage boozy by adding sake. Spicy Chilled is priced at $14, with Kyuri Kup available for $5 ($6 with sake).

    Common Bond celebrates National Burger Day with a limited-time-only Bacon Goat Cheese Burger, offered now through Tuesday, May 28 at Common Bond Bistro locations.     1891 American Eatery & Bar, 702 East 11th, is ready to smash National Burger Day, offering $12 Smash Burgers and fries for $12 on Tuesday, May 28 only.     Le Jardinier, 5500 Main, is teaming up with IWA Sake, aka the ‘wine lovers’ sake, for a two-night event on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1. Founder and maker of IWA Sake Richard Geoffroy will welcome guests into the private dining room, taking guests on a journey through older, rare releases flown in from Japan paired with a five-course tasting menu curated by chef de cuisine Felipe Botero, featuring chilled Maine lobster; Comté cheese soufflé; risotto with blue crab, melted leeks and preserved lemon; poached Atlantic cod with sake and Kaluga caviar sauce; and “the white meringue” for dessert – comprised of matcha cream and cherry compote. Limited seats are offered priced at $375 per person.

    Landry’s Inc. brings back its Houston Chef Series, offered on select evenings from Wednesday, May 29 through Wednesday, August 7.     The Hall on the Yard food hall in Ivanhoe Village has closed amid a lawsuit with its landlord over unpaid rent, according to court records. Records indicate that the Hall on the Yard owes nearly $250,000 in unpaid rent.

    Marketed as “the world’s first full-service food hall,” the space housed nine food stalls, five event spaces and three premium cocktail bars. Now, a sign that reads “Permanently Closed” hangs on its front door, although the hall has not made an official announcement pertaining to its closing.

    Bungalower first reported the hall had closed on April 18.

    The Hall’s parent company, Ivanhoe Place Propco, filed a lawsuit against The Hall April 15, alleging the hall owes $249,105 in unpaid rent plus utilities. Ivanhoe Place Propco asked the court that the food hall be evicted, in addition to paying the rent.

    According to the complaint filed by Ivanhoe Place Propco, The Hall on the Yard’s parent company filed for bankruptcy protection in July 2023. They were supposed to continue to pay rent, which did not happen even after notices were served, according to records.

    One of the hall’s vendors, Shay’s Kitchen, released a statement on Facebook Thursday, stating that they were unexpectedly served a five-day notice to vacate the premises. The statement also says that Shay’s Kitchen fulfilled all of its financial obligations and that they’re looking for another location to reopen.

    “In the notice, Shay’s Kitchen was named as a Defendant. In a letter attached to the notice, we were informed that we are not legally responsible for any of the issues but are named merely because the court system requires the landlord to do so,” the post reads.

    “The issues at hand are entirely beyond our control or involvement,” the post continues.

    Jamal Wilson, owner of The Hall at The Yard LLC, faced a similar fate with his other concepts a few years back. The Hall on Franklin in Tampa closed in 2020, as well as The Hall at Ashford Lane in Atlanta. Wilson’s New Orleans concept also closed in 2022.

    Wilson is also selling his Tampa home, according to property records.

    The Hall on the Yard opened in 2022. It was originally supposed to open in 2020, but faced delays due to supply shortages.
