  • You say you want Romcoms, then go support this one | The Mary Sue

The Internet is determined to not let a week go by without debating whether more rom-coms should be made. Today, we got a taste of a unique offering that pairs two genuine stars. If you’ve ever been one of those people on the web arguing that we just don’t make rom-coms anymore, you better be in line for a ticket when You, Me & Tuscany premieres next year. This frothy little take on the genre stars Halle Bailey and Rege-Jean Page as two people thrust together by chance? (Or, is it fate?)

Anna (Bailey) decides that squatting in an old abandoned Tuscan villa is a perfectly normal course of action. No judgement here. But, things get complicated when Michael (Page) enters the picture as a member of the household their unannounced guest is squatting in. But, let’s be honest folks, even with that set-up, we’ve got all the ingredients there.

Traditional romantic comedies usually consist of charming actors bouncing off of each other in an interesting locale. Add in the strange, but at least partially believable, inciting incident, and we’re off to the races.

We don’t even need to mention the fact that Page has extended experience being a grumpy love interest. A lot of us are still thinking about Seasons 1 and 2 of Bridgerton constantly, because of all it did for the romance genre. You, Me & Tuscany is playing in a similar garden as far as easy to fall in love with as narratives go. Bailey’s now refined princess charm will be a hoot to see play in the Amalfi Coast.

You, Me & Tuscany points to the state of rom-coms

A lot of different voices have tried to explain the lack of rom-coms during the previous decade. The 2010s contained a bunch of romance movies. As you would expect for period of 10 years. But, audiences felt like the romantic comedy genre wasn’t sitting as high in the water as it used to be. During a recent appearance on Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Reese Witherspoon gave her read. Maybe she’s on to something?

“Something’s wrong,” she began. “I have a theory about it. It all has to do with rom-coms and sitcoms. You know how there’s been, like, the past 10 years — I would even say the past 15 years — this decline in the making of rom-coms? Or, like, legitimate big movie stars being in rom-coms?”

Witherspoon adds, “It’s not just rom-com movies, but I also think of rom-com television shows. The television show that you watched when you were 11, 12, or 13, that made you imagine and visualize dating skills.”

Audiences have to pull our weight

As we mentioned on the top of this article, the discussion about rom-coms in Hollywood really isn’t going away. Despite a couple of really noteworthy entries scoring box office success in recent years. There are still reheated social media arguments about where all the romantic comedies are every 4 months or so. It’s exhausting! These movies have largely seen themselves confined to streaming. But, that’s not even the case anymore as Anyone But You, Regretting You, and Materialists all have warmed up audiences looking for some love on-screen.

There’s the normal gnashing of teeth about superhero movies, and big budget blockbusters, muscling out the smaller pictures. But, there is also some audience culpability at play. Simply put, when a rom-com hits theaters, we probably should go see it. Social media has a nasty habit of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. One unfortunate side effect of our current cinema landscape is that things that do not draw at the box office do not get made.

And a dastardly bit of  “be the change you want to see in the world,” we audience members have to do our part. That means, just like when a mildly well received movie gets an unexpected bounce at the box office, romantic comedy fans need to put our money where our mouths are.

Not to be too alarmist, as recent years have seen this getting a little bit better. With the media climate determined to sink the superhero genre, and now turning its fangs towards action movies as well, we could expect a glut of biopics, musical adaptations, and of course romantic comedies. (Because ladies have to go see something at the theater, or some other such nonsense?)

You, Me & Tuscany looks like a fun test of how much we all really want to fall in love again. Let’s hope we pass with flying colors on the way to get a spritz.

Social media is abuzz over upcoming Rom-Com You, Me & Tuscany starring Halle Bailey and Bridgerton alum Regé-Jean Page as strangers-turned-potential lovers who get entangled in a Rom-Commy conundrum stemming from one little lie in one large Italian villa.

Bursting with bright-eyed wonder is Halle Bailey who stars as Anna–a 20-something woman trying to figure life out after a string of bad decisions that include abandoning her dreams of becoming a chef.

When Anna loses her house-sitting job (and housing), a chance encounter with a handsome Italian man named Matteo (who happens to have a villa sitting empty in Tuscany) inspire her to jet off for Italy against the advice of her always-honest bestie, Claire.

But Anna’s plan to crash at Matteo’s villa without permission for one night falls apart when Matteo’s mother, Gabriella (Italian film icon Isabella Ferrari), shows up at the house unexpectedly.

In a panic, Anna allows Gabriella to believe that she is Matteo’s fiancée. Uh oh!

Naturally, that one little lie grows into a big problem when Matteo’s cousin, Michael (Regé-Jean Page) shows up and connects with Anna who, as you probably can guess, discovers that the heat between them may ignite a fire that will transform her life. Whew!

    Check out the trailer below:

Produced by Will Packer and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kat Coiro, the buzzy film has all of the deliciously cheesy ingredients of a great Rom-Com with lovable leads, Halle and Rege, at the forefront of the feel-good story.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the two young stars opened up about their real-life meet-cute and more ahead of filming in Italy’s gorgeous countryside.

“I remember I saw him [at this year’s Met Gala]–you were wearing all red, it was so cool,” said Bailey about meeting Regé for the first time.

“It’s very weird ’cause you’re nervous and you’re like, ‘Oh, if I go up to this person, are they gonna be nice?’ And then I’m like, we’re doing a movie together, I’m gonna just go up.”

Jumping in was Regé who complemented his co-star perfectly during the cutesy chat currently going viral online.

“It’s kind of a wild place to meet someone,” said Page. “And we just kind of hung out because those rooms can be pretty intimidating. It’s a room full of every luminary in the world. So finding someone who’s just like, ‘Hey, you wanna be friends? Well, we’re gonna be friends. We’re about to go on this great long holiday.’”

Will you be seated for You, Me & Tuscany (on April 10, 2026)? Do you already have a date in mind? Tell us down below and peep the social media hysteria over the upcoming Rom-Com on the flip.

  • Honey, the Heartthrobs Are Home

    Honey, the Heartthrobs Are Home

For years, there’s been a void in Hollywood. Despite all the young, fresh talent parading along red carpets and across our screens, there was one type missing: the quintessential heartthrob.

Heartthrobs of yore had a hold on me — and on pop culture as a whole. And there have always been jawdroppingly beautiful people in Hollywood. That’s part of its whole thing. But heartthrobs are in their own class. Their swoon-worthy looks combined with their out-of-this-world charisma place them in a league of their own. But where have all the heartthrobs gone?

Despite male celebrities like Timothee Chalamet or Harry Styles winning our hearts, their energy doesn’t give heartthrob in classic Hollywood style.

Perhaps, in an age of social media, the endless scrum of influencers and TikTok stars have desensitized us to pure beauty. Liking a photo or scrolling through a feed is blasé compared to slavering over the latest TV interview with your heartthrob of choice and then plastering their limited-edition, J14 posters to your bedroom wall.

Or maybe Tarantino was right when he said that actors don’t play “leading men” anymore. “Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” he said in an interview in 2022. “But they’re not movie stars, right? Captain America is the star. Thor is the star.”

Though his statement got backlash, he was right … in a way. I miss the days when I’d go to the movies just to watch my heartthrob take the screen. Because that’s precisely what it means to be a heartthrob: you’re defined by your charisma, not the pedigree bestowed to you by the industry or a giant like Marvel.

It’s why Leonardo DiCaprio mysteriously remains alluring (though he is only allured by women under 25). It’s why Brad Pitt remains one of the most famous movie stars in the world, despite not winning an Oscar for acting until 2020.

But never fear, heartthrobs are here.

With the Oscars barrelling towards us, Vanity Fair just released its annual Hollywood Issue. And this year’s spread is a feast for the eyes.

This year’s coveted cover spot was awarded to Selena Gomez, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Ana de Armas, Jonathan Majors, Keke Palmer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Julia Garner, Regé-Jean Page, Emma Corrin, Hoyeon, and Jeremy Allen White.

Familiar faces like Keke Palmer and Selena Gomez entertained us as former child stars. But last year marked significant growth in their careers.

Newer faces like Florence Pugh, Julia Garner, Hoyeon, and Ana de Armas have been impressing the industry over the past few years and finally had landmark career breakthroughs in 2022.

But the most revelatory part of the list: the return of the heartthrob. Austin Butler! Jonathan Majors! Aaron Taylor-Johnson! Regé-Jean Page! Jeremy Allen White! Siri, play ‘Woman in Love’ by Barbra Streisand! Siri, add ‘My Man’ to the queue!

And. Vanity Fair, I want to thank you for your service. From the bottom of my throbbing heart. The creative direction held nothing back. Set a dark, sexy club, the entire set harkened back to old Hollywood. And though the diverse cast selected signals a long-awaited, inclusive standard of beauty, the charm of the classic Heartthrob is alive in this intergalactic generation of superstars.
