Christina Haack’s highly publicized third marriage has come to a close — and her ex‑husband, Josh Hall, isn’t holding back his thoughts on the matter.

Following the finalization of their divorce earlier this week, Hall took to Instagram with a scathing message aimed at the HGTV star.

“Excited to spend Labor Day weekend in the real reality,” Hall captioned a photo of himself wearing a cowboy hat and petting a saddled horse.

“Finally, legally divorced and a free man,” he continued. “I’ve always worked hard, kept what’s mine, and declined hand outs, and I’m keeping it that way. Lesson learned: don’t marry someone who needs constant public validation and will use your personal drama for attention.”

A California judge officially signed off on the divorce on Aug. 26, marking the end of the contentious union.

According to court documents obtained by Fox News Digital, neither Haack nor Hall will receive spousal support.

Haack will stay in her Newport Beach mansion and Tennessee farmhouse, while Hall retains several vehicles, including a 2021 Bentley Flying Spur V8, a 1982 DeLorean and a Honda CRF motorcycle.

Hall has since moved on with model Stephanie Gabrys, while Haack is now dating businessman Christopher Larocca.

Prior to filing for divorce, Haack and Hall filmed footage for the HGTV show “The Flip Off” alongside her first ex-husband, Tarek El Moussa, and his second wife, Heather Rae. However, Hall only appeared in the premiere episode of the show due to his split from Haack.

During a February episode of “The Flip Off,” Haack shared an update on their settlement negotiations as she claimed that Hall had continued to make her “financial offers” and “wants to retire off me.”

“Honestly, if I would’ve really understood the repercussions of all of this, I would’ve gotten a prenup, or I would’ve never married him,” she said, per People.

In July, Haack and Hall both filed their own divorce petitions, each citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the dissolution of their marriage. Hall requested spousal support and asked the court to terminate Haack’s ability to receive spousal support from him.

Meanwhile, Haack requested the court terminate both of their ability to be awarded spousal support. In a court filing, she stated that Hall “should not need” spousal support because he has his own source of income.

Haack and Hall began dating in March 2021 and secretly married in October of that year. The former couple later had a formal ceremony in Hawaii.

The pair did not share any children together.

The following week, Kris shared photos on Instagram, and many fans noted she bore a stronger resemblance to her famous daughters.

“I decided to do this facelift because I want to be the best version of myself, and that makes me happy.

“Just because you get older, it doesn’t mean you should give up on yourself,” she added. “If you feel comfortable in your skin, and you want to age gracefully — meaning you don’t want to do anything — then don’t do anything.

“But, for me, this is aging gracefully. It’s my version.”

“Of course, my daughter Kylie went with me, while Kim was present at all times on FaceTime,” she said.

“The Kardashians” star explained why she believed it was important for her to be transparent about her surgeries.

“I decided to reveal some details because I feel it can be very inspirational to people who aren’t feeling so great about themselves,” Jenner said. “Even when I had my hip replacement, we filmed it. I have the conviction that sharing these things can be helpful.”

  • Kate Gosselin slams rumors she stole her children’s college funds

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Kate Gosselin is setting the record straight and firing back at rumors that have followed her since the cameras stopped rolling.

The former “Jon & Kate Plus 8” star opened up during a candid moment and addressed misconceptions about her that she wanted to clear up.

“That I stole my kids’ college money,” Gosselin said during a TikTok Live on Friday night.. “They all have their college money, all the money that was in my control, anyway. And they have more than enough for college. That’s not a thing. That never happened. I’ll just leave it at that.”

The 49-year-old mother of eight also shut down another accusation – that she’s estranged from daughter Hannah, one of the sextuplets who chose to live with ex-husband Jon Gosselin in recent years.

“Hannah’s texting me,” Gosselin said. “First of all, the misconception that Hannah and I don’t talk — we always have … Hannah and I have always talked. She comes and visits, she is in touch with the kids all the time. Not true.”

She admitted that she “could go on and on with misconceptions, but those are the two that came to mind.”

Kate’s comments come after she gave a glimpse into her current day-to-day life, which includes working 12-hour shifts as a pediatric nurse.

“And so now I work again tomorrow morning, so I have my dishes loaded into the dishwasher … so I can go to bed and get up early and do it all over again,” she continued.

While several people praised her work ethic in the comments, one fan asked her what happened to all the income she earned working on the show.

“Honestly? Providing for 8 kids, college funds which I am proud to say covered all of their college and more and LAWYERS. Sickening but I was drug into court constantly and that costs A TON,” she said in her response. “Sad bc my kids could have a lot more saved and I could have a retirement saved if it weren’t for lawyers. It’s OK. I’m helping other families and I feel needed and I enjoy helping!”

  • A Timeline of Chelley, Huda, and Olandria’s ‘Sisterhood’

    [ad_1]

    The girls are fighting.
    Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photos: Peacock

Huda Mustafa, Chelley Bissainthe, and Olandria Carthen were the OG girls of Love Island USA. They entered the Villa as strangers and left as friends. Right? Right?! Unfortunately, this is Love Island and not Friendship Island. Throughout their time on season seven of Peacock’s dating show, the women called each other sisters even when they weren’t seeing eye to eye. They got through Huda’s breakup with Jeremiah Brown, but Casa Amor changed everything when Huda and Chelley became interested in Chris Seeley — who could be playing ball overseas right now. Outside of the Villa, fans on either side were picking apart their friendship. Chelley fans claimed Huda was playing the victim throughout the show, while members of the Huda HQ called Chelley a mean girl, claiming she, Cierra, and Olandria were bullying Huda, causing her to act out. The stan fighting quickly turned ugly; a fan posted a racist meme of Huda as the police officer who murdered George Floyd, with Olandria’s face pasted on Floyd’s. How did a show about making out make fans so hateful?

At the reunion on August 25, the three women will have to address it all, watch the moments that had viewers starting fights online, and finally come to a consensus about what happened between Ace and Huda during the Heart Rate Challenge. Below, follow Huda, Chelley, and Olandria’s on their journey from sisters to frenemies to gossip-podcast guests.

June 3, Episode One: Huda makes a bold entrance during their first challenge on the show; despite being paired up with Chelley, she kissed Ace. However, her attraction was not unrequited. Ace kisses Huda back in a later challenge, in addition to Chelley. (Olandria kisses ol’ boy too, but it doesn’t go anywhere.)

June 4, Episode Two: Every man is open to recoupling with Cierra except Jeremiah. Huda is kind of living for the fact that her man stayed by her side. “Y’all deserve some real men,” she exclaims, pointing to Chelley and Olandria, who sit alone at the firepit. It’s clear neither woman is happy that their partner stood up. Girl, you don’t have to play that,” Olandria replies before telling her they’ll have a “nice little chat later.”

June 5, Episode 3: Huda tearfully tells Chelley she thought Olandria’s comment was “rude,” and Chelley gives her a hug. They’re probably still jet-lagged after all, miscommunications happen among strangers. From Olandria’s point of view, she meant she would chitchat with the women about the boys’ behavior, not reprimand her. Olandria clears this up with her, and the sisters reconcile.

June 6, Episode 4: Huda is visibly upset that new bombshell Amaya “Papaya” Espinal picks Jeremiah as her home run during a challenge, calling it the “dumbest shit she could’ve ever done.” Olandria reminds her it’s “just a game.” Again, it’s only the fourth episode. Huda panics to Chelley, and who comforts her as well, despite feeling a little annoyed as Jeremiah has made it clear he’s committed to Huda.

June 9, Episode 7: Huda tells the others she’s discussed moving in with Jeremiah. Olandria is clear to the camera that she’s willing to “feed into” Huda’s “delusions” about Jeremiah, even if she normally wouldn’t with her friends outside the Villa. Which is arguably the most “true friend” thing you could do for another Islander. “If this is what my girl wants, I’m not finna be the sour apple of the bunch going ‘No girl you need to snap out of it,’” she tells the confessional. “At this point and time, she just needs support, and I can be that support system even if I don’t really support your decision.”

June 15, Episode 12: Jeremiah picks Olandria to make out behind a door in a challenge. Huda can’t resist sneaking a peek, sees them kissing “for real, for real,” and pops off, beginning the end of her relationship with him.

June 23, Episode 19:  Bye Jeremiah! The girls head to Casa Amor where Chris, a basketball player overseas, and Chelley hit it off.

June 24, Episode 20: Olandria is dumped from Casa Amor. Huda cries like someone died.

June 26, Episode 21: Chris charms Chelley with some flowers. JD, Huda’s current match, calls Huda “too dominant” during a challenge, giving her the ick. She out-alphas him and breaks it off.

June 29, Episode 24: Back in the villa, Chelley is still trying to choose between Ace and Chris. However, the heart rate challenge quickly sobers her up, when Huda takes it “too far” dancing on him. Her twerking is called “so disrespectful.” As the professional (TikTok) dancer tries to get himself out of trouble, even his buddies Nic and Pepe refuse to back him up, both saying it “looked a little more than just a challenge.” Chelley herself found it hypocritical since Huda saw red when a new bombshell picked Jeremiah for a challenge.

June 30, Episode 25: It’s not going to be so easy for them to make up. Chelley tables their conversation for another day. Adding syrup to the fire, Chris makes both women pancakes the next morning, but Chelley gets an extra pancake and a flower. Is it because he feels bad about what happened the night before? Or he’s still trying to charm Chelley? Either way, Huda can only focus on the differences between their meals. At the end of the day, it is Huda getting a sweet treat after all when she and Chris kiss in the speakeasy.

July 1, Episode 26: Oh no, it gets worse! Huda and Chelley are still mad at each other and now it’s everyone’s problem, as evidenced by their “Standing on Business” callouts. They go back and forth, finally saying what they said to the other Islanders to each other’s faces. Then, Chelley accuses Huda of not being a girl’s girl, the biggest insult on the Island. Olandria backs it up by revealing to the firepit that Huda and Chris kissed.

July 3, Episode 27: Hurricane Huda is now a party of one. Olandria apologizes for making Huda feel isolated during the challenge. Finally, Huda and Chelley talk it over and all three ultimately exit the show as friends.

July 9: BuzzFeed posts a visual on Instagram showing what it would serve each Islander for breakfast if they were coupled up. For Chelley, BuzzFeed gave her a “knuckle sandwich.” BuzzFeed deletes the post and makes an attempt at an apology that gets deleted quickly. Team Chelley called the post “disturbing, disgusting, and unacceptable.” They continued, “It is the harsh reality that implicit biases can be rooted in anti-blackness, misogyny, prejudice, violence, etc.”

July 11: Chelley, the first to be dumped, stands by the fact that “Lines were definitely crossed” during the Heart Rate Challenge, in an interview with Vulture, but says she and Huda are cool. “That’s something we were able to talk about and resolve and understand each other on,” she says.

July 12: In a post-elimination video on Love Island socials, Huda tells Chelley she made her a better person.

July 16: Huda feels like she was “bullied” a lot in the villa, she tells  Entertainment Tonight.

July 16: Huda dives deeper into her love triangle with Chelley and Chris with Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy. She explains again how she “brought back Chris” for both her and Chelley to explore their connection with him. So, why was there a miscommunication? “Beats me … Everybody kept talking about me, but no one was talking to me,” Huda explains. “No one gave a fuck about my opinion … I felt like I had no one.” She also addresses the rumor that she “sat on Ace’s face” during the Heart Rate Challenge: “My butt was on his stomach area and I was twerking. It was like two seconds too. No, I did not put my ass on Ace’s face!”

July 17: Huda addresses her friendship with Olandria and Chelley in an interview with Blavity and criticizes her fans who are bullying them online, clarifying to everyone that she’s not “hating” on either woman. “I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I think there are lines that are crossed,” she said, subtly addressing the racism that the two faced in wake of their feud. “And I don’t condone hate. I don’t condone bullying. I don’t condone any of that. I think people’s safeties are at risk.”

Huda goes on to defend herself against the Heart Rate Challenge allegations. “So I’m doing this in a challenge, and it’s a problem. People are like, ‘Oh, you were kissing him for a crazy amount of time,’” she says. “People were kissing my man for a crazy amount of time, and I’m cheering them on. I was doing things that I did in other challenges.”

July 17: Chelley asks her supporters to “continue to spread love and not hate” as she acknowledges the racism she’s received from viewers of the show. “To the people who used their platforms not just to recap a show but to speak truthfully about the deeper realities Black women face, your words meant everything,” she writes. “You reminded the world that we are layered, emotional, complex, worthy, and real. Thank you for holding the line of truth with me and for me in times where hate seemed stronger than usual.”

July 17: Olandria opens up about  how “difficult” it’s been dealing with racism and microaggressions since being on the show, escalating to hateful messages comparing her to police brutality victims. “I heard it was even a meme of me being George Floyd and Huda being an officer,” she tells Variety.“That’s a very touchy topic for the Black community. It’s disgusting, to say the least. I don’t understand how you take a love show and make such a comment like that. I was even getting death threats. My family was getting death threats. It shouldn’t be like that at all.”

July 17: Chelley and Olandria both reportedly unfollow Huda on Instagram. Huda unfollows back.

July 22: Chelley agrees with Keke Palmer’s assumption that Huda, in the moment, was performing for herself and not thinking about how Chelley might feel seeing her dance on Ace. “Chelley had every right to be upset; Huda agreed … She was very apologetic,” Olandria adds. Chelley clarifies that she is “cool” with Huda and reminds the audience that there are no real prizes for challenges. So they took care of those plastic dolls for nothing?

August 13: Andy Cohen teases Huda, Olandria, and Chelley’s segment on the reunion while having Olandria on as a guest on Watch What Happens Live. He finds it “interesting” to see her reunion with Huda and Chelley and even calls the extended version of the “Heart Rate” challenge “dramatic” — this is coming from the guy who’s been hosting Housewives reunions for decades.

August 13: BuzzFeed publishes an article titled “What It Means to Protect Black Communities at Work, Even When Your Own Company Messes Up Like We Did,” in which it issues another apology and includes reactions from other Black employees.

August 21: Just a few days before the reunion airs, Chelley and Olandria aren’t letting the mean-girl allegations from a certain castmate get to them. “To see our fellow Islanders playing into that narrative was hard,” Olandria tells Teen Vogue. “It’s like, you knew us, why would you get out and let America, let social media get to your head? A lot of them played into that mean-girl, bully narrative. I’m like, ‘Okay, this is not fair.’” The women weren’t naïve to how they are perceived as Black women on a reality show, especially when they would criticize Huda. “How dare you guys say something like that to us, but not to everyone who was having that mean-girl energy or mean-girl moments? It goes back to the whole, you have to act a certain type of way [as a Black woman] because the moment you act ‘out of character’ you’re done,” Chelley says. “We just spoke our truth and held people accountable for their actions.”

August 21: It’s not looking good for Huda. The reunion trailer shows just how hurt Olandria and Chelley have been by Huda’s bullying allegations. “It’s like I’m seeing two different people,” Chelley exclaims, while Olandria tearfully adds, “That shit hurt, bro.” It might be the end of their friendship, for real this time.

“Judge Caprio’s unique brand of compassion and common sense approach to justice caught the attention of daytime TV and social media audiences, making ‘Caught in Providence’ a fan favorite,” Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein, co-presidents of Debmar-Mercury, said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. “We will miss him dearly.”

The show went on to receive four Daytime Emmy Award nominations, including one for Caprio.

In December 2023, Caprio announced to his social media followers he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, calling it “an insidious form of cancer” and asked his followers to keep him in their prayers.

“One thing that people ask me is, ‘What can I do for you?’ First of all, I can’t thank all of you enough for your friendship and your kind messages. But I would ask each of you, in your own way, to please pray for me,” Caprio continued. “I am in need of the power of prayer, which I believe, in addition to the medical treatment that I’m receiving, is the most powerful weapon to help me survive this.”

  • Kyle Chrisley sues Tennessee county and police for $1.7M, claims false arrest and excessive force

    [ad_1]

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Kyle Chrisley and his wife, Ashleigh, are suing Rutherford County and two sheriff deputies for $1.7 million over his aggravated assault arrest in September 2024.

In court documents obtained by Fox News Digital, attorneys for the Chrisleys claim the couple were “terrorized in their own home” the afternoon of Sept. 9, 2024, and then “punished for calling for help.”

According to the lawsuit, a “disgruntled mechanic, angry over a payment dispute, showed up uninvited, kicked at their doors, threatened violence, and used his car as a weapon by ramming their SUV and nearly running Kyle over in front of multiple neighbors.”

Kyle and the mechanic – who had done work on the Chrisleys’ car and was allegedly paid in full – got into a physical altercation outside their home in Tennessee over a monetary dispute.

The “Chrisley Knows Best” star allegedly “shoved back in self-defense and the two men pushed each other out of the garage and down the driveway,” the lawsuit states.

Ashleigh, who was “fearing for her family’s safety,” called the police after the mechanic allegedly “intentionally reversed into [her] parked SUV, smashing and damaging her vehicle” and “performed two 360-degree spins while flinging topsoil into the air, and sped away toward the neighborhood exit.”

The mechanic allegedly returned to the neighborhood shortly thereafter and continued to terrorize the Chrisleys, with neighbors looking on.

According to a neighbor’s security camera footage, the mechanic yelled, “Kyle, come get in front of my car so I can run your b—- ass over.”

Once police arrived, the disgruntled mechanic allegedly claimed that Kyle “stabbed him with a knife.” A neighbor claimed they did not see a weapon of any sort.

Kyle “denied the allegation, explaining Moore was the aggressor, had trespassed, frightened his family, threatened to kill him, initiated physical contact, rammed the SUV, and returned attempting to run him over.”

TODD CHRISLEY ADMITS HE REFUSED TO WORK DURING HIS PRISON STINT WHILE WIFE JULIE DID HARD TIME

“When deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office arrived, they didn’t arrest the man who caused the chaos,” the lawsuit states. “Instead, they arrested Kyle Chrisley, and ignored clear evidence that he was the victim, not the aggressor. Deputies disregarded eyewitnesses, overlooked available video footage, and ignored Tennessee’s self-defense law.”

When Kyle’s wife pulled out her phone to begin recording the authorities’ behavior, she was allegedly “threatened with arrest and ordered to
    stop.”

Authorities allegedly “threw Chrisley to the ground, placed knees on his back, and handcuffed him despite the fact that Chrisley used no force against the
officers and did not otherwise resist,” the lawsuit states.

According to the Chrisleys’ filing, they decided to “bring this lawsuit because no family should face criminal charges or threats of arrest for defending themselves at home or for exercising their constitutional rights. This is a case about false arrest, excessive force, and retaliation for trying to hold police officers accountable.”

“Our hopes for this lawsuit are accountability and change because no family should have to endure what the Chrisley family endured in this terrifying scenario,” Kyle’s lawyer, Wesley Clark of Brazil Clark, PLLC, said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

  • Unpacking the Mind-Bending Virtual Reality Game in ‘3 Body Problem’

Unpacking the Mind-Bending Virtual Reality Game in ‘3 Body Problem’

    [ad_1]

Big surprise: 3 Body Problem, Netflix’s new show based on a trilogy of sci-fi novels that regularly deal with advanced quantum science theories, doesn’t offer a lot in terms of easy answers. Why did Vera Ye kill herself? What do people see when those shaky countdowns get to zero? And who, really, are the incoming aliens known as the San-Ti (Chinese for “three-body [people]”)?

Many of the answers to the latter question revolve around a virtual reality game encased in a sleek chrome headset that resembles something Apple would sell for several thousand dollars. Early in Episode 1, Jin Cheng (Jess Hong) is given one of these devices on a visit to Ye Wenjie (Rosalind Chao), the mother of Jin’s recently deceased friend Vera. Wenjie claims Vera was gaming regularly in the weeks before her death, which piques Jin’s interest since her particle physicist friend would never deign to carve out time for video games.

Headset affixed, Jin finds herself in a hyperrealistic desert landscape. The words “Level One” echo loudly. The headset is able to affect every sense, not just seeing and hearing, effectively transporting her mind to a new plane of being. Jin marvels as the wind ripples the traditional garb she’s been outfitted in, smiles and squints as a massive sun rises over a stately pyramid, and screams in terror when the wind picks up, revealing a desiccated, still-alive humanoid figure buried at her feet. I’m not a big fan of tutorial levels, either.

Eventually, one of Jin’s friends, snack magnate Jack Rooney (John Bradley), gets his hands on her headset. But his experience playing the game is even more bonkers. When Jack first puts on Jin’s device, which was evidently intended just for her, a woman (Sea Shimooka) appears behind him and sternly observes, “You were not invited,” before cutting him down with a sword. The same thing happens when another friend, Auggie (Eiza González), tries to play. The San-Ti want only a select few people to use their tech. But with time, Jack finally makes the cut. A shiny headset of his own comes with a card that reads: “We invite you to play.”

Initially, the VR portions of 3 Body Problem do resemble some kind of incredibly immersive game. Putting on the headset and engaging with the AI once again, Jin meets a suave NPC, the Count of the West, and another simply referred to as Follower, a young girl Jin immediately takes a shine to. The Count welcomes Jin to “Civilization 137” and tells her that this world has “chaotic” and “stable” eras. She must deduce whether an era is chaotic or stable, and if she’s wrong, the civilization is destroyed.

As in any good game, you need a big end-of-level boss. Here in Level One, it’s Emperor Zhou—a real-life tyrant king from about 3,000 years ago. The Count, desperate to appease the emperor, tells Zhou that he can use divination to predict the next stable era, which just so happens to be in eight days and will last 63 years. Jin, a trained scientist rather than a mystic, disagrees with the Count’s assessment. But Zhou is on board with the Count’s prediction and dismisses Jin’s interjections about “the laws of physics: everything we know to be true about the world.”

    “Which world?” he asks her.

The emperor moves forward with the Count’s plea to “awaken your dynasty and let it prosper.” But that decision quickly proves to be misguided, as Zhou’s civilization is completely obliterated by a massive ice storm. Nevertheless, Jin’s foresight in choosing science over mysticism results in her passing Level One. Several doomed civilizations later, Jin and Jack solve Level Two together: This world is part of, get this, a three-body star system, moving unpredictably between the gravity of three suns, causing constant ecological disasters and apocalypses. Throughout the “game,” they’re tasked with explaining complex modern physics to NPCs who are based on important figures in Earth’s history and whose temperaments range from “unimpressed” to “cartoonishly hostile.” And I mean cartoonishly. At one point, Kublai Khan tries to boil Jin and Jack in a big pot, which is something Wile E. Coyote would attempt. A series of comedic cameos adds to the heightened reality and playfulness of these scenes compared to the rest of the show, like when League of Gentlemen alum and Sherlock cocreator Mark Gatiss—in character as Isaac Newton—spits at Jin to “shut the fuck up, troll!” after she questions his (very cool) human-powered binary computer. The San-Ti are at least hip to a bit of gamer lingo, then.

It’s a fascinating way to tell the San-Ti’s story, which becomes clearer and clearer with each progressing level. This game is not a puzzle; the three-body problem is unsolvable. Any species existing within such an unstable star system will always face eradication, eventually. It’s a demonstration by the San-Ti that they have no choice but to abandon their planet and find a new home.

Jin and Jack are invited to Level Four, which, as it turns out, is basically an initiation. Donning the headsets one more time, they are greeted by the game’s “guide,” that mysterious woman with a sword. “There is only one solution when your world is doomed,” the woman says. “Flee,” Jin whispers in response. And so, after 9,478 total civilizations have been built, destroyed, and rebuilt, the San-Ti are accepting an invitation to Earth that—surprise—Ye Wenjie extended to them at the end of Episode 2. Wenjie, exasperated with the cruelty she experienced at the hands of her fellow human beings during the Cultural Revolution, believes the San-Ti could save humanity—even if, and perhaps explicitly because, the San-Ti warned Wenjie that her “world will be conquered” if she responded to the their messages sent decades before Jin’s VR excursions.

Jack and Jin, as “Level Four champions,” are invited into a sect of humanity that’s led by Wenjie and is preparing to welcome the San-Ti, whom they call “Our Lord.” The game is designed not only to literalize the history of the San-Ti, but to select players who will be sympathetic and malleable to the San-Ti’s own ends. “Your cingulate cortex [an area of the brain commonly associated with emotion and empathy] activity was the highest we’ve ever recorded,” true believer Tatiana (Marlo Kelly) tells Jin.

Inside the careful and occasionally humorous craftsmanship of the games, there are more hints to be gleaned about the nature of the San-Ti. First—and this is the one that’ll stick in most people’s minds—they have the ability to “dehydrate” themselves, essentially pausing all biological functions and flattening into a rolled-up canvas so that they can preserve themselves during the chaotic eras of their home world. When a stable era arrives, any surviving, hydrated San-Ti toss them into pools of water and they come back to life, like those compressed hand towels that start out looking like tiny pills that you sometimes get at Chinese restaurants. Though the San-Ti civilizations are based on human ones in the game, they clearly have a very different biology. “We don’t look anything like this,” the sword woman tells Jin and Thomas Wade (Liam Cunningham) in a final demonstration later on. When asked what they do look like, she calmly tells Wade he “wouldn’t like it.”

More troublingly, the game’s design betrays the implication of the San-Ti’s authority over humanity. In each level, Jin and Jack are presenting their ideas to some of the most powerful and notably violent figures in history. This is not the San-Ti asking for help; they’re already on their way. This is them explaining how things will work once they arrive.

By the season’s end, there’s still a lot about the headsets that remains mysterious. Why did the San-Ti, a species that takes things very literally (to the point that they’re incapable of lying or understanding the concept of a fairy tale), construct such a narratively complex fable to highlight their perspective? They clearly know the broad mechanics of a video game, but not Little Red Riding Hood?

In the end, though, another useful purpose for the headsets emerges: outright threats. The woman with the sword is an avatar for the Sophons: four 11-dimensional supercomputers folded back into the size of a proton (seriously, don’t think too hard about this) and quantum entangled with one another on the San-Ti fleet, allowing for instantaneous communication even though they’re 400 years from reaching Earth. The Sophons can be anywhere, see and hear anything, cause mass hallucinations, and even disrupt the laws of physics, slowing down humanity’s scientific progress so that it’ll be less able to defend itself when the San-Ti arrive. They’re omnipresent gremlins designed to drive everyone employed at the United Nations insane, basically.

By the end of the first season, humanity’s relationship with its alien counterpart, the San-Ti, has already deteriorated to the extent that they publicly announce their intention to conquer Earth. As 3 Body Problem’s first season progresses and Earth and the San-Ti fleet morph from uneasy allies into all-out belligerents, the headsets become less prominent in the story. There’s only so much you can do to recruit more pro-San-Ti influencers after you’ve called all of humanity “BUGS” on an LED display in Piccadilly Circus. But, curiously, Tatiana herself receives a headset at the end of Season 1, even though she was already all in on the San-Ti cause. “If one survives, we all survive,” the card included with her device reads. Expect to see some different tricks from the headset when Season 2 inevitably drops. For the rest of those who received them, the San-Ti’s message is clear: Play ball and help, or die with Earth Civilization no. 1.
