  • Maryland leaders applaud Hoyer’s ‘immeasurable’ impact after retirement announcement – WTOP News

In the hours after Rep. Steny Hoyer announced his retirement, the praise coming from elected leaders at all levels in the state of Maryland was like a tidal wave.

In the hours after Rep. Steny Hoyer announced his retirement, the praise coming from elected leaders at all levels in the state of Maryland was like a tidal wave.

Democrats, and especially the ones from Prince George’s County, couldn’t stop gushing over the impact Hoyer had as a lawmaker and as a person.

“Steny Hoyer’s impact is immeasurable on the state of Maryland, on the United States of America, to all of us personally,” Gov. Wes Moore said.

He then told a story about his first interaction with Hoyer, which came well before the governor entered politics.

“I remember when I was deployed to Afghanistan,” Moore said. “I received a care package … one of the things in the care package was a flag, a Maryland flag, that was sent to me from Steny Hoyer. I did not know Steny Hoyer at that point. He just knew that a Marylander was protecting the country overseas. So he asked for a flag to be sent to that Marylander, who happened to be me.”

“He’s someone who has shown us what public service looks like,” Moore added, joking that Hoyer will get some “very well deserved time off. And frankly, knowing Steny Hoyer, I have no idea what retirement actually looks like. I’ll believe it when I see it.”

Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, a longtime friend of Hoyer’s, credited him with changing her life.

“He said to me years ago, ‘no matter what you run for, I am always going to be basically the first to support you. I will support any endeavor you undertake,’” Alsobrooks said in an interview with WTOP. “And that’s the penultimate of trust and belief is he felt that I was talented enough, and that I offered the kind of service that he felt he could support.”

She also noted how strong his support was among African American voters in Prince George’s County, and how much he treasured that trust Black voters put into him.

“Steny Hoyer is popular all around the state and the country, but he is beloved among African Americans,” she said. “You can see it in his annual Bull Roast that, routinely and without effort, calls out over 1,000 people, and many of them are African American families from Prince George’s County who have supported him in all 20 plus of his elections. And he noted that, and he thanked specifically the African American community for their solid support. And I think that was classy.”

She said because of that support, Maryland could count on Hoyer to deliver for the state.

“We always knew that in Steny, we had a staunch advocate,” Alsobrooks told WTOP. “We knew we had a person who would not only appear on our behalf, but would be prepared for whatever the issue was, that he would build whatever relationships were necessary for us to be successful.”

In a statement, Sen. Chris Van Hollen praised Hoyer.

“He never wavered in his focus on delivering results for his district and our state,” Van Hollen wrote. “From his efforts to secure federal support for important military bases like Naval Air Station Patuxent River to our institutions of higher learning, like the University of Maryland, to so much more — Steny is Team Maryland through and through.”

Rep. Glenn Ivey, whose district is adjacent to Hoyer’s, called Hoyer one of the “greats of all time” during an interview with WTOP.

“He’s had a huge impact, certainly on Prince George’s County in Maryland, but really the nation,” Ivey said. “There’s a lot to show for it within the congressional district. The federal courthouse, for example, was something that he put in place, helped to build out the University of Maryland. There’s a lot of activity that he’s done with respect to WMATA, building out the Metro system. The list goes on and on. So it’s a huge loss for not just Maryland, but for the nation.”

Ivey also noted the depth that Hoyer’s roots extend through the region.

“Three of my kids went to Judy P. Hoyer Elementary School,” Ivey said. “When they first met him, they called him Mr. Judy P. Hoyer, because his family’s had that kind of an impact across the board too.”

Maryland Third District Rep. Sarah Elfreth said her career in politics began with an internship in Hoyer’s office.

“From millions of dollars of investment in Prince George’s County and Southern Maryland to his work to uphold democratic values around the globe, you would be hard-pressed to find an issue he hasn’t led on,” she said.

Hoyer was born and raised in Prince George’s County and graduated from Suitland High School.

“He’s just been amazing with the resources that he’s been able to bring back to Prince George’s County and to the state of Maryland,” said Del. Nicole Williams, who chairs the Prince George’s County delegation in Annapolis. “We are really going to miss his leadership, but we’re also very happy for him in his retirement and wish him a lot of rest for all of his years of service.”

Prince George’s County Council member Wala Blegay, who may be interested in succeeding Hoyer in Washington, credited him with helping her make the contacts needed to get her political career off the ground, too.

“He just showed me what true constituent services (looked like) and how you how you actually go and meet people’s needs,” she said.

  • Gavin Newsom, Ben Stiller, and More Come to Jimmy Kimmel’s Defense

Photo: ZZHollywood To You/Star Max/GC Images

On Wednesday, ABC announced that it would be pulling new episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live! “indefinitely” after remarks about Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin sparked right-wing rage and comments from FCC Chair Brendan Carr. Kimmel is getting canceled for the set-up to a joke, not even the punchline. In Monday night’s monologue, Kimmel said “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” Carr told YouTuber Benny Johnson that he was considering pulling ABC’s affiliate licenses because Kimmel characterized Charlie Robinson as MAGA-affiliated. “[This] appears to be an action by Jimmy Kimmel to play into the narrative that this was somehow a MAGA or Republican-motivated person,” Carr said. “What people don’t understand is that the broadcasters … have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest. When we see stuff like this, look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change conduct, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.” ABC and media company Nexstar have apparently decided to take the easy way. Nexstar said it would be preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! on its affiliate stations, and shortly thereafter ABC said it was pulling new episodes of the show.

President Trump did a victory lap on Truth Social. “Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible,” he wrote. “That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!!” MSNBC’s Chris Hayes called the move “the most straightforward attack on free speech from state actors I’ve ever seen in my life and it’s not even close.” On the pro-Kimmel side, we have Ben Stiller, California Senator Adam Schiff and California Governor Gavin Newsom decrying Carr’s remarks and ABC’s decision to take Kimmel off the air.

Hayes focused primarily on Carr’s remarks, laying blame for Kimmel’s enforced hiatus at “state actors.” He tweeted “This is the most straightforward attack on free speech from state actors I’ve ever seen in my life and it’s not even close.”

Stiller was concise, reposting a report from the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint and captioning it “This isn’t right.”

Newsom seemed to link Kimmel going off the air to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’s cancelation, as well as with the firing of MSNBC commentator Matthew Dowd and Trump buddies taking control of TikTok. “Buying and controlling media platforms. Firing commentators. Canceling shows. These aren’t coincidences,” he wrote. “It’s coordinated. And it’s dangerous. The @GOP does not believe in free speech. They are censoring you in real time.”

Adam Schiff also compared what’s happening to Kimmel with what’s already happened to Colbert. He also mentioned Trump’s lawsuits against the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and 60 Minutes. “This administration is responsible for the most blatant attacks on the free press in American history,” he wrote. “What will be left of the First Amendment when he’s done?”

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker called Kimmel’s cancelation “an attack off free speech” on Bluesky. He urged elected officials to speak up in defense of the First Amendment: “A free and democratic society cannot silence comedians because the President doesn’t like what they say. This is an attack on free speech and cannot be allowed to stand.”

Oates came to Kimmel’s defense despite not being a late-night enjoyer. “as one who avoids nearly all late-night comics & has never seen Jimmy Kimmell [sic] or his rivals still it seems sad that anyone is so abruptly fired for anything he says however awkward or inappropriate,” she wrote. “much of humor is edgy, surreal, exaggerated, & can’t be fact-checked. if a joke is in poor taste or falls flat the audience’s silence is punishment enough for the comic.”

Speaking from experience, Griffin said it was imperative Kimmel have support in this moment. Please, take it from me, it is very important to have Jimmy Kimmel‘s back right now,” she wrote on Bluesky. “Be vocal. Be an ideological consumer. Money is all their crowd cares about.”

  • Alec Baldwin Thanks Supporters in First Statement After Rust Trial Dismissal

Alec Baldwin Thanks Supporters in First Statement After Rust Trial Dismissal

    Photo: Ramsay de Give-Pool/Getty Images

Alec Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter case over the Rust shooting was thrown out mid-trial on July 12. Halyna Hutchins’s widower still wants to hold the actor “accountable” in front of a jury, but others celebrated the news. Below, the latest reactions to the dismissal, including Baldwin’s first public statement after the trial and comments from his celebrity supporters.

July 12, 2024: Reactions to the July 12 dismissal of Alec Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter case are trickling in. Deadline reports that Matthew Hutchins, the widower of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, still wants Baldwin back in court for fatally shooting her on set in 2021. “We respect the court’s decision,” Hutchins’s lawyer Brian J. Panish told Deadline of the criminal case that was dismissed with prejudice, which means it cannot be filed again. “We look forward to presenting all the evidence to a jury and holding Mr. Baldwin accountable for his actions in the senseless death of Halyna Hutchins,” Panish added, which seems to suggest that Hutchins will still pursue justice in civil court. In June, Panish claimed to the New York Times that Baldwin and other parties were months late on a settlement payment for a wrongful-death civil lawsuit brought in 2022 over the Rust tragedy. At the time, Panish said Hutchins was considering suing for breach of agreement or resuming the wrongful-death suit.

Meanwhile, Baldwin’s supporters have rejoiced at today’s news. “Hallelujah @AlecBaldwin You are free!! #CourtTV,” his Rust co-star Frances Fisher tweeted. The actress has previously been vocal about her support for Baldwin, tweeting in January 2023 that the “grandstanding prosecutor” wasn’t going after the “true culprit” who “put a live round in a gun.” As of publication time, neither Baldwin nor his wife Hilaria have publicly posted about the dismissal that had him crying in court. Fisher left a celebratory message under Baldwin’s wife Hilaria’s latest Instagram post, commenting, “Hallelujah Hilaria💕.” Actress and songwriter Apollonia Kotero similarly showed her support on Instagram, commenting “💜🙏🏽Amen Alec!! Felicidades!!” under Baldwin’s most recent post.

July 13, 2024: Alec Baldwin has issued his first public statement since his involuntary manslaughter case was dismissed. There are too many people who have supported me to thank just now,” he captioned an Instagram photo of himself looking emotional in court. “To all of you, you will never know how much I appreciate your kindness toward my family.”

Several fellow celebs sent well wishes under the post, which comes a day after the Rust trial was thrown out. “We love you❤️❤️❤️,” Amy Sedaris wrote, while Don Lemon and Anthony Hopkins both left heart emojis. “I cannot express how happy and grateful I feel for you and your beautiful family! ❤️❤️,” Lesley Ann Warren said. “Make peace with yourself and may you and your family heal from this. 🙏,” Frank Grillo added. Other supporters in the comments include Caroline Rhea, Craig Killborn, Gregory Lauritano, and Mike Hatton. Baldwin’s Rust co-star Frances Fisher, who already shared multiple congratulatory messages on the day of the dismissal, also posted a new comment: “Whatever comes next, we are by your side, Alec. ✊🏽”

  • North Carolina lawmakers react to President Biden’s State of the Union address

North Carolina lawmakers react to President Biden’s State of the Union address

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Following President Joe Biden’s ‘State of the Union’ address, we are hearing reactions from both sides of the North Carolina congressional delegation Friday morning.

During his address on Thursday, Biden unveiled his plan to take on some of the biggest issues at home and abroad, including immigration, abortion and Gaza.

In a statement, Democratic congresswoman Deborah Ross said:

“President Biden is right: we face two competing visions for the future of our country. Confronted by those who relentlessly seek to move our country backward, we must fight every single day for progress and possibility.”

Democratic congresswoman Valerie Foushee also weighed in. In a statement, she said:

“Though much progress has been made, President Biden made it clear that our work remains unfinished. It is critical that we put the American people first and prioritize delivering real, bipartisan solutions that address the pressing needs of the people.”

On the other side, many Republicans are calling it a campaign speech rather than a ‘State of the Union’.

Republican senator Thom Tillis released a statement overnight.

He said: “The one question that everyone should be asking themselves following this speech is: Are you better off than where you were three years ago? The resounding answer I hear from North Carolinians is no.”

Republican congressman Robert Hudson also said in a statement:

“Under Joe Biden, the State of the Union is in crisis. The President can try to convince the American people his policies are working, but they aren’t buying it. From the catastrophic open border, to skyrocketing prices fueled by inflation, to weakness on the world stage, Joe Biden has made our country less prosperous and less safe.
