  • Projected Cost of Vegas High-Speed Train Nearly DOUBLES! – Casino.org

    [ad_1]

    Posted on: October 3, 2025, 05:52h.

    Last updated on: October 3, 2025, 06:00h.

The estimated cost of Brightline West’s high-speed rail line connecting Southern California to Las Vegas has surged to $21.5 billion, nearly doubling from its last publicly confirmed estimate of $12.4 billion in January 2025. The updated figure was disclosed in a US Department of Transportation (DOT) report released this week.

Brightline West will travel 218 miles on the median of Interstate 15 at speeds of up to 200 mph, making the trip in about two hours. (Image: Brightline West)

According to Bloomberg, the increase is primarily driven by rising labor and material costs. In response, Brightline West is seeking a $6 billion federal loan from the Trump administration to replace a previously planned $6 billion bank facility.

The company also intends to raise additional equity to cover the remaining cost escalation.

“We have had very productive conversations with USDOT and the Federal Railroad Administration over the last few months to continue to move Brightline West forward,” said Brightline CEO Mike Reininger, speaking to Bloomberg in September.

Brightline West previously secured a $3 billion federal grant under the Biden administration, structured as a reimbursement contingent on meeting minimum spending thresholds.

    Will Trump Derail It?

The future of federal funding for Brightline West has come under scrutiny amid broader cuts to high-speed rail initiatives.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration canceled a $64 million planning grant for a proposed Dallas–Houston rail line. Then in August, it withdrew $4 billion in federal support for California’s Los Angeles–San Francisco high-speed rail project, whose cost has ballooned from $33 billion in 2008 to $128 billion.

Brightline West appears to remain on track, however, likely due to its mostly private financing model.

“We are excited to be the only high-speed rail project currently supported by the Trump administration,” Reininger told Bloomberg.

    Slow Train Coming

Stations would be located along the route in Victor Valley, Hesperia and, eventually, the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport, not shown on this map, which is scheduled to open near Jean, Nev. between 2035-37. (Image: Brightline)

In September 2018, Brightline announced it had acquired the old XpressWest high-speed rail project, which had previously received approval to build a Vegas-to-LA high speed rail.

Two years later, construction costs were projected to be $8 billion. That amount was updated to $10 billion in mid-2023. During a bond offering in January 2025, the cost was updated again to $12.4 billion.

The last estimate, which was never officially announced, was $16 billion, according to the DOT.

In April 2024, construction on the project began following a groundbreaking ceremony, though only field investigation work and utility installation have been completed so far.

The Las Vegas terminus will be constructed by McCarthy Building Co. on Las Vegas Boulevard near Blue Diamond Road. Although that’s 2.5 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip, ride-hailing services, resort shuttles, and car rentals will be accessible at the station.

The Southern California terminus will drop passengers in Rancho Cucamonga, where light rail connections can carry them the 37 additional miles southwest to downtown LA, which for most people will take about an hour.

Brightline West has abandoned its initial hope of opening in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in LA, admitting that service won’t be possible until at least December 2028.

The Florida-based company previously promised to charge $119 for a one-way coach trip and $133 for VIP service. It has not said if that estimate will rise in step with the project’s construction cost.

Cando Rail & Terminals Names Nate Servis as New CFO

    [ad_1]

Servis will replace current CFO Rick Soenen who is retiring.

Cando Rail & Terminals, one of North America’s largest owners and operators of first and last-mile rail infrastructure, is pleased to announce the appointment of Nate Servis as Chief Financial Officer. Servis officially joined the senior leadership team on March 26, 2024, replacing Rick Soenen who is retiring.

Servis brings a wealth of knowledge of the Transportation & Logistics sector from his 15+ years of Wall Street investment banking experience. He spent the last ~15 years at Wells Fargo Securities, most recently as a Managing Director in the Industrials group, where he was responsible for the origination and execution of M&A and capital raising transactions for clients in the Transportation & Logistics sector. Over the last few years, Servis led the firm’s coverage of the rail sector and brings deep knowledge of and relationships with Class I and short line railroads, rail service providers, and port and terminal operators, in addition to investors that target the sector. Servis led the sale of Cando Rail & Terminals to AIMCo in November 2022.

Brian Cornick, President & CEO of Cando Rail & Terminals, highlights the importance of this strategic hire as Cando invests organically and inorganically in critical infrastructure to support shipper-customers and Class I partners.

“As we continue on our tremendous growth trajectory, balancing organic growth with strategic acquisitions is a cornerstone of our playbook, and bringing in Nate will enhance these efforts,” says Cornick. “In addition, Nate brings relationships and credibility with key players in the United States, a core strategic growth area for Cando. His deep understanding of our company and industry, combined with his strategic finance track record, will help propel Cando to new heights.”

Prior to joining Wells Fargo Securities, Servis began his career at Robert W. Baird in the Consumer & Industrials investment banking group. Servis holds a B.A. in economics, with a concentration in finance, from Dartmouth College.

  • Why U.S. ports are getting a $21 billion upgrade

Why U.S. ports are getting a $21 billion upgrade

    [ad_1]

U.S. ports are receiving multimillion dollar grants to upgrade cargo handling infrastructure.

The grants are part of the Biden administration’s $21 billion commitment to modernize port infrastructure in the U.S.

Midsize port cities such as Baltimore are among the 2023 grant recipients. In November, the Port of Baltimore received a $47 million grant to kick-start an offshore wind manufacturing hub, among other improvements. For example, the funds will pay for a new berth, or dock, for rolling cargo. Baltimore is the top U.S. destination for rolling cargo imports, a category including farm machinery from John Deere and light-duty vehicles from BMW, according to the Maryland Port Administration.

More than $653 million in Port Infrastructure Development Program grants were awarded to U.S. ports in 2023 by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration. Other projects receiving federal funds include the Port of Tacoma Husky Terminal Expansion in Washington state ($54.2 million), and the North Harbor Transportation System Improvement Project in Long Beach, California ($52.6 million).

Port improvements are also coming from the Environmental Protection Agency, which offers funds to combat truck idling. The U.S. Department of Defense is deepening some waterways on the East Coast to welcome larger ships.

Baltimore isn’t the only city with a growing port according to maritime economists. Experts say gateways along the U.S. southeast coast are moving more cargo as major points of entry clog up with truck traffic.

“All of the ports on the East Coast are upgrading their infrastructure and capacity,” said Walter Kemmsies, managing partner at the Kemmsies Group, a maritime economics consulting firm currently working with the Port Authority of Georgia in Savannah. “What that does is it makes it more attractive to the ocean carriers. They like to be able to go in and out of a port very quickly, and they like to go to several ports.”

Ports America formed a public-private partnership with the state of Maryland to manage equipment and operations in sections of the Port of Baltimore. The group told CNBC that $550 million in upgrades have gone into Seagirt Marine Terminal alone for densification of the container yard since the partnership began in 2010.

These upgrades build on past plans to revive America’s declining industrial cities. In Baltimore, public officials are addressing bottlenecks along the supply chain beyond the Port. They believe that the Howard Street Tunnel expansion project will increase double-stack rail capacity out of Baltimore, which could help the companies working at the port move goods to and from points in the Midwest.

Watch the video above to see more of the upgrades coming to the Port of Baltimore.

  • Norfolk Southern makes broad safety adjustments after third train derailment

Norfolk Southern makes broad safety adjustments after third train derailment

    [ad_1]

This photo taken with a drone shows the continuing cleanup of portions of a Norfolk Southern freight train that derailed Friday night in East Palestine, Ohio, Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023.

    Gene J. Puskar | AP

Hours after a 28-car Norfolk Southern train derailed Saturday in Springfield, Ohio — the third incident for the freight railroad in just over a month, including the toxic disaster in East Palestine, Ohio — internal emails show railroad officials making broad safety adjustments for rail cars.

An internal Norfolk Southern email sent Sunday and obtained by CNBC with a time stamp approximately 11 hours after the latest derailment indicated that Norfolk Southern was planning to reduce train length in an effort to prevent future incidents. Sources tell CNBC the email was given to Norfolk Southern yard managers, who are union workers in charge of stacking the trains.

A Norfolk Southern spokesman told CNBC that guidance has since been updated and the train carrier is now mandating that any trains over 10,000 feet use distributed power, meaning the trains would be powered from several locations across the length of the train, not just from the front. Distributed locomotives are wirelessly controlled from the leading locomotive in both power and braking as needed to assist in the management of in-train forces.

Norfolk Southern told CNBC other railroad carriers currently have this safety practice in place.

“At Norfolk Southern, the safety of our crews and the communities we serve comes first,” Connor Spielmaker, spokesman for Norfolk Southern, wrote via email. “Part of enhancing safety is continuously evaluating how we operate our network, and we have been examining immediate ways to move that goal forward. Today, as an interim step, we are ensuring all trains longer than 10,000 feet are operated with distributive power. We will build on this interim change to drive final policies that are appropriate for each segment of our railroad.”

Norfolk Southern told CNBC it is actively reviewing all safety protocols to make sure trains are operating appropriately across the network.

Still, Jeremy Ferguson, president of SMART-Transportation Division, the country’s largest rail union, said his workers are being told the railroad will limit train length.

“I have seen Norfolk Southern documents to yardmasters [Monday] morning from the field that is telling us trains no longer than 10,000 feet regardless of distributed power,” said Ferguson. “The train that derailed on Saturday already had distributed power, so their comment to CNBC does not make sense. I will say it is a good move by Norfolk Southern to take the right steps in reducing the train lengths, because the trains are too long.”

Train lengths have been a contentious issue for railroads and labor unions in negotiations. Railroads currently run on what’s called precision scheduled railroading, or PSR, which has led to much longer trains — as long as three miles.

Trains are stacked based on the destination, not weight distribution, with stacking of the first destination at the head of the train and in sequence until the last drop-off.

Railroads have redesigned train length in an effort to use fewer people and to move more cars with fewer locomotives, reducing costs and generating higher profits. But railroad unions and customers have raised safety and service concerns.

The derailment in Springfield marks the third derailment since the Feb. 3 East Palestine train disaster, in which hazardous materials spilled.

On Feb. 16, a 135-car Norfolk Southern train traveling from Detroit to Peru, Indiana, derailed approximately 14 miles outside the yard in Romulus, Michigan. According to the investigative report for that incident, the tonnage profile shows heavy cars at the head of the train, in the middle and in the rear, with empty cars scattered throughout.

The derailment is still under investigation, but according to one on-site investigation report, human error is likely to be a large factor: An “engineer panicked and applied heavy dynamic braking which resulted in an emergency brake application and derailment.”

The National Transportation Safety Board announced it is sending investigators to the Springfield site.

  • Flying Scotsman’s US Appeal Ahead of Historic Centenary

Flying Scotsman’s US Appeal Ahead of Historic Centenary

    Press Release

    May 12, 2022

The UK’s National Railway Museum is seeking the help of rail fans across the United States to help celebrate the 100th birthday of one of the world’s most recognizable steam locomotives – Flying Scotsman.

Built in Doncaster, England, in 1923, the engine became the first steam locomotive to officially reach 100 mph, capturing the hearts of people across the world.

Flying Scotsman turns 100 in 2023, and the locomotive’s current owners, the National Railway Museum, have launched an appeal to find memories and stories of Flying Scotsman. These could feature as part of a new exhibition called Flying Scotsman: 100 Years, 100 Voices.

Charlotte Kingston, Head of Interpretation and Design at the National Railway Museum, said: “Often described as ‘the people’s engine,’ we want to hear what Flying Scotsman means to you, and we particularly want to hear from people who have family memories of Flying Scotsman’s famous trip to the United States. We hope that this exhibition will create a lasting and important chapter in the Flying Scotsman story.”

Flying Scotsman famously visited the United States and Canada between 1969 and 1973 as part of a tour organized by British owner Alan Pegler. In 1969, Flying Scotsman was fitted with a cowcatcher, a bell and American-style whistle and set off from Boston along the eastern seaboard of the United States, visiting New York, Washington D.C., and ending in Houston, Texas.

The following year Flying Scotsman began another tour of U.S. towns and cities, which included Chicago and the National Railroad Museum at Green Bay, Wisconsin, before travelling to Canada and finishing at Niagara Falls on the Canadian/U.S. border.

The 1970 tour was beset by financial difficulties, and in a bid to balance the books, in 1971 Pegler arranged for the train to travel to Toronto and then San Francisco where it went on display at Fisherman’s Wharf. The trip worked well operationally but was a financial disaster, and Alan Pegler was forced into bankruptcy, leaving Flying Scotsman stranded in the USA.

In 1973 Flying Scotsman was brought back to the UK after Sir William McAlpine arranged to pay creditors and to purchase the locomotive.

Flying Scotsman left the Doncaster workshops in February 1923 and was the first locomotive of the newly formed LNER (London and North Eastern Railway). Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and numbered 1472, the locomotive was named ‘Flying Scotsman’ the following year when it was picked to attend the British Empire Exhibition in London and renumbered 4472.

Eggstra! Eggstra! Read all about it! A REALLY BIG bunny has been spotted in East Texas! The Easter Egg Express at Texas State Railroad, running on March 24, 25, 30, 31 and April 1, takes the whole family out for an Easter Egg Hunt filled with games and activities for all ages. There’s no better way to celebrate springtime than with hugs, candy and photo-ops with the mischievous hare!

Starting at the Rusk, Texas, depot with 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. departure options, there are plenty of opportunities to journey into Texas State Railroad’s enchanted Easter landscape. Kids can roam the grassy hills in search of colorful eggs filled with candy and prizes and get a great photo taken with the Easter Bunny. A variety of food and drink specialties will be available for purchase. The relaxing train ride is an eggstra-ordinary venue for a delightful springtime afternoon in the Piney Woods. These popular trains fill quickly and it’s recommended to book seats early.

Spring is the season when the region’s renowned Dogwoods are in bloom, peaking in late March. These delicate pink and white flowers are vivid along the rails of Texas State Railroad, contrasted against the train’s burly, black locomotives and the vibrant crimson passenger cars as they pass through the verdant Piney Woods. As the rolling hills of the woodland forest unfold sleeping buds and new wildflowers, a kaleidoscope of color bursts along the tracks. There’s freshness in the air on the open-air cars as the train passes over several rambling creeks and rivers.

This year, the blooms are even brighter at the popular “Texas Dogwood Trails” because East Texas is marking 80 years since the festival started. In addition to a train ride through the Piney Woods, an afternoon viewing the tantalizing beauty of the Dogwood trees in Palestine’s Davey Dogwood Park should be on the agenda.

Celebrate the season with an adventure aboard Texas State Railroad; every minute aboard this vintage train is a reminder that it’s the ride of a lifetime.

  • Texas State Railroad Adds Vintage Diesel to Its Roster of Historic Locomotives

Texas State Railroad Adds Vintage Diesel to Its Roster of Historic Locomotives

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Jan 29, 2018

Railroading fans and history buffs of all ages will have one more reason to visit Texas State Railroad in 2018.  During the spring of 2018, Texas State Railroad (TSR) will place into service a restored FP9 streamlined passenger unit, number TSR 125.

The addition of this classic diesel locomotive to the railroad’s fleet culminates a five-year effort initiated by the Texas State Rail Authority and completed by The Western Group. Both entities are enthusiastic about finalizing the restoration of this period diesel which complements the railroad’s notable roster of steam engines. These remarkably restored engines aren’t just for show; all of the railroad’s historic powerhorses provide timeless journeys along the Piney Woods Route between Palestine and Rusk, Texas.

Between 1954 and 1959, General Motors built 481 of the FP9 and FP7 locomotives to haul passengers during the “Golden Age” of streamliners. Debuting in March 1957, TSR 125 was fabricated for the Canadian National Railway for use on passenger trains like its famous “Super Continental” which operated from Montreal to Vancouver, British Columbia. The unit develops 1750 horsepower from its 16-cylinder diesel engine while a separate generator provides electrical power for heating, air conditioning and interior lighting. It is identical to locomotives used by several historic railroads which served Texas, including the Rock Island, the Cotton Belt, Southern Pacific, Frisco and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, also known as the “Katy.”

Texas State Railroad will apply a paint scheme inspired by Katy’s fleet of passenger diesels, including those used on the famed “Texas Special” which operated between St. Louis and San Antonio. The striking red, yellow and silver palette is the perfect complement to the railroad’s historic passenger car color scheme. The restored FP9 diesel will pull these 1920s cars on a number of select dates throughout the 2018 season.

TSR’s sister Railroad, Verde Canyon Railroad, based in Clarkdale, Arizona, also operates two rare FP7 streamlined locomotives on its excursion trains through the picturesque Verde Canyon near Sedona, Arizona. With these marvels of motive power, it’s no wonder that Verde Canyon Railroad is designated an “Arizona Treasure” and Texas State Railroad is the “Official Railroad of Texas.” For more information on TSR’s 2018 schedule, visit TexasStateRailroad.net or call 855-632-7729.

In the company of Cupid, hearts, roses, doves and lovebirds, chocolate is probably the most iconic symbol of Valentine’s Day. Everyone knows that “everything is better in Texas” and that includes the romance of chocolate Texas rail-style. Riding in a vintage railcar while savoring the rich flavors of mouthwatering desserts is a sweet way to inaugurate the season aboard the Texas State Railroad. The first Chocolate Lovers’ Special rolls out of the Rusk station on Saturday, Feb. 10, with another excursion following on Sunday, Feb. 11.

Passengers will be indulged with a decadent array of Texas-style desserts while riding the rails through the historic hill county of the Piney Woods. One of the inspiring chocolate delicacies on the menu is the Railroad’s very own version of the popular “Texas Sheet Cake,” described by noted New York-based travel, fashion and active lifestyle writer Jillian Downer as “the little black dress of sheet cakes.”

It is hard to imagine another food that evokes a craving equal to that of chocolate. The gooey, dark, rich sweet has been branded with many names including xocoatl, jocolatte and chockelet, but despite its title, from ancient civilization to the cyber-powered 21st-century society, one common thread remains: chocolate is a heavenly treat that is in a category all by itself. When words are inadequate to express one’s feelings for another, chocolate will say it all.

The four-hour, round-trip excursion between Palestine and Rusk includes a short layover at the beautifully renovated historic Palestine depot. On the return trip, snuggling with a sweetie in a luxurious Presidential car is bound to inspire sweet talk in rhythm to the wheels on the rails. Just as universal as chocolate is to romance, so is classic rail travel. Texas State Railroad is a master at blending the two romances into one classic adventure.

This quintessential day trip, only a few hours from the metropolitan communities of Dallas and Houston, is designated “The Official Railroad of Texas.”

  • Raptors Along the Rails

    Raptors Along the Rails

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    updated: Oct 23, 2017

When traveling aboard Verde Canyon Railroad, passengers peer up at the red rock pinnacles towering over the precious Verde River, awe-struck by the canyon walls reaching ever higher into the clear blue skies above. Changing their gaze downward and across the expanse of the canyon, everyone marvels at the wild Verde River as it meanders along the tracks. What humans don’t realize is the enormous importance this Canyon area holds for the American Bald Eagle. The Verde Valley is ideal eagle habitat in Arizona’s wild backcountry. Year-round resident raptors are joined every year from November through March by migratory feathered visitors for a wild winter respite along the cliffs of the Verde River. Where train passengers see scenic vistas and a bold medley of greens, blues, reds and golds, these magnificent flying creatures see a river teeming with food, ancient trees and dramatic canyon clefts in which to secure nests, and a big sky for their aerial adventures.

Arizona’s riparian areas are crucial habitat for raptors that depend on the river for sustenance. With their keen eyes, they fish the waters of the Verde and build legacies along its remote and protected banks. Winter is the best time to catch a glimpse of our nation’s symbol in all its glory, soaring along the train. Nests are built in preparation for the eggs that generally arrive in late January. Eaglets appear in late February or early March, watched over by ever-vigilant parents who demonstrate the meaning of the phrase “eagle-eyed.”

Longtime supporters of Arizona Game and Fish’s “Eagle Watch” program, Verde Canyon Railroad contributes toward the sustainability of the dedicated men and women who camp out near active nests, monitoring the eaglets and watching for dangers. In fact, it was AZGF Eagle Watchers who saved the life of Sonora, an educational eagle now a popular resident of Liberty Wildlife in Phoenix. Sonora was spotted as she fell from her nest along the Lower Verde River near Phoenix a dozen years ago. She was nearly killed when Africanized Bees attacked her and a sibling who unfortunately did not survive. Sonora sustained permanent injuries to an eye and a wing that made her unable to be returned to the wild, though through Liberty’s educational programs she has been able to ride the rails along the Verde River for almost 10 years now. Just as much as the train passengers enjoy seeing a bald eagle close up, it seems Sonora is also enriched by her visits to this raptor paradise. Since 2010 Liberty Wildlife has had a fruitful partnership with Verde Canyon Railroad, regularly sharing educational raptors and reptiles with guests aboard the train and at the depot.

With open-air cars accessible to the full sights, sounds and scents of the wilderness, Verde Canyon Railroad provides an ideal platform for wildlife viewing year-round. Real rails, real people and a real adventure make Verde Canyon Railroad a feast for each of the senses. The historic rail line was once a treasured connection between the booming copper mines of Jerome and distant civilization. Today, two million passengers later, the train continues to rumble into this same, untouched terrain where resident raptors soar from the edges of deep red cliffs, and the perennially-flowing water of the Verde River weaves its wondrous path through the high desert.

Advance reservations for Verde Canyon Railroad are always recommended. A stone’s throw from the hillside mining town of Jerome, Verde Canyon Railroad’s Clarkdale depot is in the heart of the Verde Valley, a diverse crossroads featuring amazing adventures in every direction. Historic steam and diesel locomotives take passengers on a 50-mile round trip adventure along the celebrated Piney Woods Route of East Texas. This quintessential daytrip, only a few hours from the metropolitan communities of Dallas and Houston, will create memories that last a lifetime.  Steeped in local history, “The Official Railroad of Texas” whisks passengers back in time as it journeys between the quaint towns of Rusk and Palestine.

Passengers enjoy comfortable accommodations in early-1900s coaches, hosted by friendly and informative attendants as they travel along gently rolling hills. During the journey, the train passes over 24 bridges, including one over 1,000 feet long. Unusual railroad structures, such as the locomotive turntable located midway, dot the historic route.

In addition to the Pumpkin Patch, other events punctuate the calendar, including the popular Polar Express every Christmas season. Trains depart on a varied year-round schedule from Palestine or Rusk.  For more information visit www.texasstaterailroad.net or call 855-632-7729.
