Rachael Sage Releases Transcendent New Album, The Other Side

Award-winning alt-folk-pop singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Rachael Sage has released of her new full-length studio album, The Other Side (MPress Records/ILS/Virgin). In anticipation, Sage released the empowering first single/video, “Whistle Blow”, the optimistic title track/video “The Other Side”, a third single/video, “Only You” (a sparkling reinterpretation of the ’80s Yazoo classic), and Beatle-esque pop-rock single “Flowers For Free”. The album premiered in The Bluegrass Situation.

Sage’s latest studio album is the most grounded of her illustrious career. The Other Side‘s 15 tracks of emotionally charged and intricately woven music recall the classic, retro-warmth of the ’70s and ’80s and are as instantly hummable as they are lyrically poignant. With memorable Americana-infused pop hooks and folk-fueled poeticism, Sage’s timeless writing reminds us what’s most important is always worth waiting for, via songs steeped in just the right amount of best-is-yet-to-come optimism.

Blending a myriad of genres and instruments into a cohesive and captivating whole, the album’s musical collaborators include guitarists Jack Petruzzelli (Patti Smith) and James Mastro (Ian Hunter), trumpet player Russ Johnson (Elvis Costello), bassist Nick Beggs (Kajagoogoo), and guest vocals from UK pop icon Howard Jones. Track highlights include: “Whistle Blow,” an Americana palette of slide and acoustic guitars, where Sage muses on power dynamics and boundaries; Sage’s folk-pop anthem “The Other Side“, whose memorable gospel-tinged chorus and rapid-fire poeticism make it an instant classic; “I Made a Case” is a poignant, Bacharach-esque duet featuring Howard Jones, with whom Sage has undeniable vocal chemistry; while the ’60s-influenced “Flowers For Free” is poetic pop-rock at its most adventurous. The record also includes Sage’s interpretations of Yazoo‘s classic “Only You”, and Maria McKee‘s “Breathe”.

Sage decidedly stretched her range as a producer on The Other Side. String arrangements are equal parts intimate and lush, and there’s a sense of expansiveness that never overtakes her gritty-but-ethereal vocal delivery. Acoustic guitars, fiddles, tympani and trumpets amplify lyrics bound by an appreciation of freedom’s most desired consequence: peace. Detailing her latest album, Sage – a self-described “cancer thriver” – shares, “This record encompasses a high and low search for resilience in this broken world. In ‘No Regrets’ – which I co-wrote with my Dad – I sing ‘I love life in all its aching joy.’ Anyone who lived through the chaos of the last several years and still manages to get out of bed and out into the world has my admiration. I can’t wait to get back out on the road and hear how everyone triumphed, firsthand!”

The digital album, vinyl and deluxe physical CD – featuring 12 paintings by Sage, photographs by renowned Studio 54 photographer Bill Bernstein, along with a Bonus Disc of alternate mixes – can be streamed/ordered at: mpress.lnk.to/TheOtherSide

  • Rachael Sage Delivers Delightful Video/Single of Yazoo Classic ‘Only You’ Ahead of New Album

Rachael Sage Delivers Delightful Video/Single of Yazoo Classic ‘Only You’ Ahead of New Album

Award-winning alt-folk-pop singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Rachael Sage has just released a bubbly companion video to her single “Only You” from her forthcoming full-length studio album, The Other Side (out July 21, 2023, via MPress Records). A reinterpretation of the ’80s Yazoo classic, Rachael’s take on the song features its timeless melody with an updated arrangement complimenting Sage’s folky storytelling approach. The track is as much a revamp as it is a respectful homage to the beloved UK synth-pop original. Sage’s own acoustic guitar, Wurlitzer and Jupiter-8 synth parts, receive support from her longtime band The Sequins, including Grammy®-nominated cellist Dave Eggar.

Premiering in Guitar Girl, the dynamic video depicts a jubilant Sage recording in her closet, rehearsing in her living room, and dancing like nobody’s watching. Enjoy “Only You” here!

Sage explains her inspiration for covering the song, saying “A few years ago I saw the incredible Alison Moyet perform at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC, and it had a huge impact on me. I had listened to Yazoo a lot as a kid (‘Upstairs At Eric’s’ was a cassette mainstay), and always admired how deceptively simple their sound was. Trendy arpeggiated synths couldn’t mask the fact that their songs were absolutely timeless and that the melody of a song like ‘Only You’ was equally an earworm as it was emotionally universal. I hope that if Alison and Vince Clarke (of the original group Yazoo) hear this track, they’ll feel how inspired I was by their work and that my stylistic spin on it will make them smile!”

The digital album, vinyl and deluxe physical CD – featuring 12 paintings by Sage, photographs by renowned Studio 54 photographer Bill Bernstein, along with a Bonus Disc of alternate mixes – can be pre-saved/ pre-ordered at: mpress.lnk.to/TheOtherSide. Both the audio and video versions of “Only You” are available on all streaming platforms and YouTube.

Rachael Sage Releases Electrifying Video ‘The Other Side’

Alt-folk-pop singer-songwriter Rachael Sage has released the title track video “The Other Side” from her forthcoming album (out July 21, 2023, on MPress Records). Rachael, an award-winning singer-songwriter and self-described “cancer thriver”, is the human embodiment of an exclamation mark, and “The Other Side” video exemplifies her vibrancy in color and song. Shot at Gymnopedie in Brooklyn, the video’s rich hues jump off the screen as the irrepressible Sage moves between industrial urban spaces and Patricia Field-esque, fantastical gardens. The video (featuring Kevin J.Killen on drums and electric guitar and directed by Mike Flanagan) premiered in Vents and Wonderland.

Watch “The Other Side” video HERE.

June is both Pride and Uterine Cancer Awareness Month, and Sage is both mindful and celebratory when she discusses the video, saying, “When I sat down to brainstorm this video, I had three main goals: to create something so uplifting the viewer couldn’t help but feel encouraged – along with wanting to convey how remaining hopeful even under the most challenging circumstances can effectively bend time. Any excuse to light up a raw space in Brooklyn with neon, wear sequins and jam with a good friend is a great day, and I hope it makes people smile and feel inspired to embrace this precious, colorful life!”

The track, which features Jack Petruzzelli (Patti Smith) on guitar and Russ Johnson (Elvis Costello) on trumpet, demonstrates Sage’s timeless songwriting and reminds us that what’s most important – in relationships, dreams or our quest for freedom in whatever form – is always worth waiting for. Co-produced by Rachael with Grammy® winner Andy Zulla and longtime engineer Mikhail Pivovarov, “The Other Side” is resplendent with an uplifting horn section, soulful organ, spirited Elton-esque piano, and rapid-fire poeticism. Steeped in hope with just the right amount of best-is-yet-to-come optimism, the song is as instantly hummable as it is lyrically poignant.

“The Other Side” and Sage’s lead single, “Whistle Blow” are available on all streaming platforms.

Rachael Sage Releases Optimistic Single, ‘The Other Side’

Alt-folk-pop singer-songwriter Rachael Sage has released the title track “The Other Side” from her forthcoming album (out July 21, 2023 via MPress Records). Featuring Jack Petruzzelli (Patti Smith) on guitar and Russ Johnson (Elvis Costello) on trumpet, Sage’s timeless songwriting reminds us that what’s most important – in relationships, dreams or our quest for freedom in whatever form – is always worth waiting for. The single premiered in Music-News and The Country Note

Sage explains, “My hope is that this song encourages people to slow down just long enough to relish where they are right now and not to take anything for granted, including our innate human ability to reimagine the future we actually want, even if it seems elusive.”

Listen to “The Other Side” HERE.

The phrase “the other side” is deeply evocative, conjuring up images of political strife, opposing perspectives, military battles, and the afterlife But it also brings to mind memories of flipping over vinyl or cassette album sides, reminding us of our inherent need for polarities in everything from pop music to inhaling/exhaling. Sage shares, “‘The Other Side’ is my favorite track on this record and the one I think that exemplifies where I am right now in my life and as an artist. The lyric is very patient, and approaches the idea of love as something very distinct from romance…it’s more about connecting with both yourself- your inner sense of freedom and authenticity – and your loved one (s), without judgment and with a sense of unconditional acceptance.”

“The Other Side” and “Whistle Blow” are available on all streaming platforms.

Rachael Sage Releases Empowering Single/Video ‘Whistle Blow’

Indie music trailblazer Rachael Sage announces the release of “Whistle Blow,” the first single from her upcoming record, The Other Side (due out July 2023 via MPress Records). The multi-instrumentalist, known for her captivating mix of alt-folk, pop, indie rock and Americana, co-produced this song, as well as the forthcoming album.

“Whistle Blow,” with its distinctly Americana palette of slide and acoustic guitars, finds Sage musing on power dynamics and boundaries in the wake of many public figures’ bad behavior coming to light: “I decided to write from the imagined perspective of someone summoning the courage to speak out, stand up, and make it crystal clear that they have been mistreated by someone in a greater position of power.” In addition to her captivating musical prowess, Sage is a fierce advocate for women’s rights and often uses her platform as a tool to spread messages of empowerment.

“Whistle Blow” is a composite account of women’s struggles to be respected in the workplace, at home, and in history books. This propulsive, musically lush track will resonate with anyone summoning the strength to stand up for themselves – and against oppression in any form. Rachael further divulges, “In this song I wanted to channel the courage and focus – a kind of imperviousness – that it takes to worry less about what people will think than about sharing your own truth.”

Whistle Blow and its companion video are available today on all streaming platforms.
