  • Skydiver dangles at 15,000 feet after parachute catches on plane’s tail in Australia

    [ad_1]

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Australian accident investigators on Thursday released dramatic images of a skydiver’s parachute becoming entangled on an airplane’s tail, leaving him dangling at 4,500 meters (15,000 feet.)

The skydiver, Adrian Ferguson, used a hook knife to cut himself free and sustained minor leg injuries during the incident on Sept. 20 that began at Tully Airport in Queensland state. The pilot and 16 other parachutists on board the Cessna Caravan that day were not hurt.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau released the video with its report on its investigation into the mishap.

The plane had reached the desired altitude where the skydivers were planning to execute a 16-way formation jump. A 17th parachutist was at an open door waiting to record video as the others jumped.

Ferguson was leaving the plane when the ripcord of his reserve chute became snagged on a wing flap, the report said.

The chute released and immediately jerked Fergson backward. He knocked the camera operator clear from the plane and into a free fall. Ferguson’s legs then struck the trail’s horizontal stabilizer before the chute tangled around it and left him dangling.

Ferguson used a knife to cut 11 lines that enabled him to fall from the plane with part of the torn chute.

He released his main chute, which fully inflated despite becoming entangled with remnants of the reserve chute, and he landed safely.

Meanwhile, most of the other skydivers had jumped. The pilot was left with two skydivers aboard battling to control the plane with part of the chute still tangled around the tail.

The pilot made a mayday call and was prepared to bail out wearing an emergency chute. But Brisbane air traffic authorities decided he had enough control of the plane to land safely at Tully. It landed without incident.

“Carrying a hook knife — although it is not a regulatory requirement — could be lifesaving in the event of a premature reserve parachute deployment,” the bureau’s chief commissioner Angus Mitchell said.

Senior Sergeant Peter McFarlane told news.com.au that the survivors were suffering from psychological distress. He said the relationships between those who had died would be provided at a later time, per ABC.

When emergency services arrived at 7 a.m., neighbors were reportedly using garden hoses to try and stop the blaze, according to news.com.au. The home was found fully engulfed in flames by fire crews, per ABC.

“It’s been quite traumatic on all emergency services and obviously our priority is the families and extended families of the victims, but also emergency services workers who will require some support in coming days,” McFarlane said, per news.com.au.

“It was a very sad and tragic scene inside and outside of that fire,” he added. “We have a lot of families gathered around there, and as I said, they are very tight knit families, extended families here in Emerald, and they are gathering around to support each other.”

PEOPLE has contacted the Queensland Police Service and the Queensland Fire Department for comment.

A GoFundMe page has been created by the aunt of Desmond and Maddison’s father, Jake Symes, to raise funds for funeral expenses, per the outlet.

“It breaks my heart to be writing this. In the early hours of 6 November 2025, my nephew Jake Symes lost his entire world — his two beautiful children, Maddison (1 year, 8 months) and Desmond (5 months) — in a tragic house fire in Emerald,” the description on the page by Sally Woulfe reads.

“In one night, Jake lost everything — his babies, his home, and every belonging he owned. As a young father, he is now facing the unimaginable pain of having to lay both of his children to rest,” Woulfe adds.

“Our family is shattered. Maddison was full of life and laughter, always smiling and curious about the world around her,” Woulfe continues. “Little Desmond was a gentle, happy baby whose laughter brought light to everyone who met him. Their bond was pure love — and they were taken far too soon.”

“We are reaching out to the community for help to raise $15,000 to cover funeral expenses and to help Jake begin to rebuild his life,” the page adds. At the time of publication, the page had raised nearly $2,000 Australian dollars — around $1290.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli told press on Thursday that the tragedy was “incredibly sad,” per news.com.au.

“When you deal with smaller towns, there is no doubt that those connections will be felt and the loss will be felt so deeply,” he said.

  • NSW and Queensland Extend Star Entertainment’s Special Manager Terms

NSW and Queensland Extend Star Entertainment’s Special Manager Terms

    [ad_1]

New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland regulators appointed special managers to oversee the company’s operations after the scandals surrounding its risk management failures and unethical behaviors. The beleaguered operator has recorded substantial progress in remedying its deficiencies but must still convince authorities it is ready to resume control.

    Both Regions Expect Swift Progress

In ASX filings on Friday, Star disclosed the extension of Nicholas Weeks’ term as Manager of The Star Sydney by nearly six months, lasting until 30 June 2024. Similar to NSW, the position of the Special Manager for The Star Gold Coast and Treasury Brisbane casinos in Queensland has been extended by 12 months to 8 December 2024

These extensions aim to demonstrate that Star is capable of the necessary remedial actions to regain suitability and resume gaming activities as per its casino license provisions in NSW and Queensland. This change necessitates Star to demonstrate its adherence to the ongoing remediation plans and regain suitability by summer 2024.

Queensland’s decision to extend its special management follows a recent decision by Attorney General Yvette D’Ath to alter the effective date of a 90-day casino license suspension from 1 December 2023 to 31 May 2024. Meanwhile, the NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) clarified that its extension will likely mark the final continuation of the Manager’s term, with the option to conclude the tenure earlier if deemed appropriate.

    The Operator Faces Growing Pressures

Star Entertainment managing director and CEO Robbie Cooke commented on the recent developments, expressing satisfaction with the Remediation Plan’s approval in Queensland. He stressed the need for unwavering commitment, accountability, and diligence to implement the measures successfully and prove that Star Entertainment can operate without additional supervision.

Despite the operator’s steady progress towards compliance, it faces substantial financial issues. Recent casino duty rate increases threaten to undermine the company’s long road to profitability as its FY 2022/23 results reported an unpleasant full-year loss of $1.6 million. However, all revenue-related policies must wait until the company regains regulatory compliance.

We need to regain the trust and confidence of all our stakeholders and communities and continue to have an unwavering focus on transformation.

Robbie Cooke, Star Entertainment managing director

While Star Entertainment has recorded steady progress with its remedial measures, many industry experts express skepticism about whether the operator can salvage its influence and reputation. Even if the company regains the trust of regulators, it must still struggle with mounting losses and macroeconomic pressures, meaning a return to profitability may take years.

  • Stunned beachgoers watch ‘world’s most dangerous bird’ emerge from ocean, video shows

Stunned beachgoers watch ‘world’s most dangerous bird’ emerge from ocean, video shows

    [ad_1]

Beachgoers at a campground in Australia were shocked when a large and “unpredictable” bird emerged from a swim, according to a video and wildlife officials.

Onlookers spotted a creature swimming toward the Bingil Bay Campground on Oct. 31, the Queensland Department of Environment and Science said in a Nov. 13 news release. At first, they thought it was a turtle or a shark.

As the animal reached the shore, its identity became clear. It was a juvenile cassowary, wildlife officials said.

Cassowaries are a large species of flightless bird found in rainforests of Queensland and Papua New Guinea, according to the Queensland Department of Environment and Science. They can reach about 6.5 feet tall and about 167 pounds. The bird has a long colorful neck, a “helmet” on its head and a “large dagger-shaped claw” on its toes.

Due to their size, strength and claws, cassowaries are considered “the world’s most dangerous bird,” according to an article from the Library of Congress.

The bird’s behavior is also “unpredictable,” the release said.

“Cassowaries can swim and will take to the water to cross from one side of a river to the other, or if they feel threatened by domestic dogs or another cassowary through a territorial dispute,” Stephen Clough, a wildlife officer with the Queensland Department of Environment and Science, said in the release.

“We’re not sure how long this animal was in the water or why it went for a swim but the footage is astonishing,” Clough said.

The campground’s host, Nikita McDowell, filmed the cassowary’s “unexpected ocean swim,” officials said.

Video footage shared on Facebook by 9 News shows the large bird bobbing along the waves. From afar, only its head and neck are visible, giving the impression of a periscope. As the bird reached the shore, the rest of its brown-black body became visible.

The cassowary appears to look at the camera several times, video footage shows. Its head has a mohawk-like helmet structure on top. Some pink and blue coloring is visible on its neck.

“It just floated to shore until it reached the level where its feet could touch the ground,” McDowell told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

“It must’ve been exhausted as it stood in the shade beneath a tree with its legs shaking for about half an hour,” McDowell said in the release. “I went to make a coffee and when I returned, it was gone.”

“I knew it wasn’t going to have the energy to attack me or anything,” she told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. “I am just so happy it’s moved on and safe and healthy,”

“This rare sighting and lucky escape by the cassowary is a reminder that we all need to do what we can to protect and conserve the species,” Clough said in the release.

“There’s an estimated 4,000 cassowaries remaining in Queensland, and they face numerous threats to their survival including habitat loss, vehicle strikes and domestic dog attacks,” he said.

Bingil Bay is in the northeastern state of Queensland and about 1,400 miles northwest of Sydney.

Helicopters collide over Australian beach, 4 passengers dead

    [ad_1]

MELBOURNE, Australia — Two helicopters collided in an Australian tourist hotspot Monday afternoon, killing four passengers and critically injuring three others in a crash that drew emergency aid from beachgoers enjoying the water during the southern summer.

One helicopter appeared to have been taking off and the other landing when they collided near the Sea World theme park in Main Beach, a northern beach on the Gold Coast, Gary Worrell, Queensland state police acting inspector, said at a news conference.

One helicopter landed safely on a sandbank, but debris from the other was spread across an area police described as difficult to access.

The dead and three most seriously injured people were all passengers in the crashed helicopter.

“Members of the public and police tried to remove the people and they commenced first aid and tried to get those people to safety from an airframe that was upside down,” Worrell said.

“(People on) Jet Skis, family boaters, ordinary members of the public rushed to assist these people.”

Passengers in the other helicopter, which lost its windscreen in the crash, are also receiving medical assistance.

Australian Transport Safety Bureau chief commissioner Angus Mitchell said an investigation into the cause of the crash was underway.

Queensland Ambulance Service said earlier that 13 people were being assessed for injuries.

The Gold Coast region is at its busiest in January, the peak time for holidays in Australia’s summer.

  • 6 killed, including 2 officers, in Australian ambush, siege

6 killed, including 2 officers, in Australian ambush, siege

    [ad_1]

BRISBANE, Australia — Six people, including two police officers, were shot and killed at a property in rural Australia after officers who arrived to investigate reports of a missing person were ambushed, authorities said Tuesday.

Police say the violence began at about 4:45 p.m. Monday when four officers arrived at a remote property in Queensland state.

At least two shooters opened fire on police officers at the rural property in Wieambilla, authorities said. Police said they returned fire but two officers were critically injured and died at the scene, and a bystander — possibly a neighbor, according to some media — was also killed during the firefight.

In that initial confrontation, a third officer was grazed by a bullet while the fourth escaped, Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said at a briefing.

Authorities said a siege situation then developed at the property, with specialized police officers and air support called in.

Just after 10:30 p.m., two men and a woman – were killed in second major confrontation with police, bringing the violence to an end, police said.

The commissioner fought back tears at an earlier news conference when she confirmed the first three deaths, saying the situation was devastating.

“Tragically, this is the largest loss of life we have suffered in one single incident in recent times,” Carroll said.

Police Union president Ian Leavers said one of the dead officers was male and the other female, and both were under the age of 30, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp. He said they had “no chance” when fired upon.

“To know that she and he are no longer with us in what was a ruthless, calculated and targeted execution of our colleagues and loved ones brings home the very real risks that we face every single day doing our jobs,” Leavers said in a video, according to the broadcaster. “They were executed by remorseless, ruthless killers.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described “terrible scenes in Wieambilla and a heartbreaking day for the families and friends of the Queensland Police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.”

“My condolences to all who are grieving tonight — Australia mourns with you,” Albanese wrote on Twitter.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton, a former Queensland police officer, said the news of police officers being murdered was “deeply distressing.”

“Police officers face danger every day to keep us from it,” he wrote on Twitter.

An emergency declaration remained in place on Tuesday morning for the Wieambilla area and a crime scene had been established at the property. The area is sparsely populated and has several large properties and gas fields.

  • Australian police offer $633,000 reward for Indian suspect

Australian police offer $633,000 reward for Indian suspect

    [ad_1]

CANBERRA, Australia — Australian police offered a 1 million Australian dollar ($633,000) reward on Thursday for information on the whereabouts of an Indian national who is suspected of murdering a woman on a tropical beach four years ago before returning to his homeland.

Queensland state police officers who speak Hindi and Punjabi are waiting in an office in Cairns to be contacted from India via WhatsApp or online about where Rajwinder Singh, 38, can be found, Detective Inspector Sonia Smith said.

Singh was a nurse working at Innisfail, south of Cairns, when the body of 24-year-old Toyah Cordingley was found on Wangetti Beach on Monday, Oct. 22, 2018.

She had gone to the beach, north of Cairns, to walk her dog the day before.

Singh flew from Cairns to Sydney the day Cordingley’s body was found and left for India the following day, police said.

The reward is the largest in Queensland’s history and unique in that it does not seek a clue that solves a crime and leads to a successful prosecution. Instead, the money is offered for information that leads only to a suspect’s location and arrest.

Police Minister Mark Ryan approved the reward and was confident people knew where Singh could be found.

“We know that people know this person, they know where this person is and we’re asking those people to do the right thing,” Ryan said.

“Now, there is a million reasons for a billion eyes around the world to help us deliver justice for Toyah,” he added.

Deputy Police Commissioner Tracy Lindford said detectives believed Singh remained in India. She appealed for witnesses among India’s population of 1.4 billion people to come forward and “give some respite to the family who miss Toyah.”

Three Queensland detectives were already in India working with Indian authorities on the investigation, Smith said.
