  • Plastic fork in Florida cracks unsolved NYC bloodbath

Plastic fork in Florida cracks unsolved NYC bloodbath

    [ad_1]

The nephew of a man found murdered in his Queens home 15 years ago has been arrested in Florida thanks to a tossed plastic fork, prosecutors say.

Anthony Scalici was indicted by a grand jury in the death of his 64-year-old uncle, Rosario Prestigiacomo, who was discovered face down in a pool of blood in his own hallway on Feb. 10, 2009. It wasn’t immediately clear if he entered a plea at his arraignment Thursday. Scalici, 41, of Boynton Beach, is accused of second-degree murder in the case.

It marks the first time a New York City homicide suspect was identified and arrested using public genealogy databases, officials say.

According to the investigation, cops were called to Prestigiacomo’s Ridgewood home on Greene Avenue around 2:15 p.m. that February day and encountered a bloodbath on the walls and floor. Prestigiacomo had been stabbed 16 times in the face, neck, torso and extremities — and suffered puncture wounds to his lung, esophagus, chest and abdomen.

He also endured blunt force injuries to his head, torso and extremities, according to investigators’ report.

Crime scene detectives collected several blood swabs from the location at the time. The medical examiner’s office was able to match a DNA profile to the victim as well as identify the DNA profile of a second, unknown man, which suggested the attacker had been hurt or bleeding.

Investigators ran the unidentified DNA through local, state and national systems with no results at the time.

In March 2022, the Queens district attorney’s office and the NYPD’s cold case unit sought help from a private lab and the Department of Homeland Security to try to generate leads using forensic genetic genealogy. A few months later, the lab was able to create an advanced genealogical profile from the suspect’s blood left at the scene.

That profile was then uploaded to public databases, information from which was also used to create a family tree to identify possible suspects or suspects’ relatives. Late in 2023, they got a potential lead and turned it over.

Ultimately, that led to the identification of Scalici. Earlier this year, detectives from the NYPD Cold Case Squad and Boynton Beach Police Department surveilled Scalici in an effort to get a discarded DNA sample — like from something he tossed in the track. On Feb. 17, 2024, detectives were able to retrieve a fork he had thrown away.

The fork produced a DNA profile that matched the unknown DNA profile recovered from under the victim’s fingernails. It also matched the unknown male DNA profile developed from the blood evidence left at the scene.

Scalici was apprehended in Boynton Beach earlier this month and extradited to New York on Wednesday to face charges. Authorities didn’t immediately speculate on a possible motive. It wasn’t clear if Scalici had an attorney.

  • ‘The American nightmare:’ NY cracking down on squatters to protect homeowners

‘The American nightmare:’ NY cracking down on squatters to protect homeowners

    [ad_1]

They bought a house in Queens with money they’d saved and planned to renovate. But Dr. Young Seh Bae says she and her husband felt robbed.

“It’s really frustrating. Stunned. It’s a really traumatic experience,” Bae told NBC New York.

That’s because while they waited for renovation permits, someone broke into their home on Francis Lewis Boulevard in Flushing — then stayed there. Photos showed piled up bags of belongings that the squatters kept with them, and they even grew marijuana plants.

But when Bae called police? The squatters said they were the ones who lived there.

“Owning a home, that’s the American dream. But some people have turned it into the American nightmare,” said New York State Sen. John Liu.

That’s why Liu is sponsoring a new bill that will clarify “one who enters onto a property or building without title, right, or permission, and therefore is not subject to the same rights and protections of lawful tenants.”

There is another proposed change that has come up in the New York City Council. The bill would change tenant protections from kicking in at 30 days, as it currently stands, to 180 days.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams said protections were designed to prevent unfair evictions. But now those protections are being abused by those looking to take advantage.

“There’s a reason squatter laws are in place,” Adams said. “Some people are starting to exploit what those reasons are.”

While it’s unclear how widespread of a problem it really is, lawmakers and police have said reports of squatting are on the rise.

“It’s up to us to periodically take a look at the laws find the loopholes and close them,” said State Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky, of Queens.

For Dr. Bae, getting a court order to evict the squatters took seven months. All because the squatters had fake IDs that listed the Bae’s address as their own.

“They claimed they had been there since October. We couldn’t really kick them out,” Bae said.

Now that the eviction is finally done, the homeowners hope to finish the construction and move in come the fall.

“Horrible. I could not believe my eyes. Seeing what he did to this lady,” Rev. Konstantinos Kalogridis of St. Demetrios said. “She was coming to church to pray, to participate. I don’t know what kind of a person this is but evil. Pure evil.”

Parishioners helped the woman, who was taken to the hospital. Rev. Kalogridis visited the victim Sunday. He said the fact that she survived the attack is a miracle.

“She is in stable condition,” he said, adding: “She is such a sweet lady. She is a very humble low-key person.”

Detectives have been out canvassing for more evidence in the area of 152nd Street and 84th Road. As police search for the suspect, Kalogridis has a message.

“My message is for him to surrender to the police and repent for this grievous sin he made,” he said. Repentance and surrender and do it as soon as possible.”

Police are still searching for the attacker.

  • Queens homeowner armed with bat puts out fake package to nab porch pirate

Queens homeowner armed with bat puts out fake package to nab porch pirate

    [ad_1]

QUEENS, New York (WABC) — A New Yorker fed up with porch pirates targeting him and his neighbors decided to take matters into his own hands in what must be the most “New York” way possible.

Carlos Mejia of Queens got creative after falling victim to a string of package snatchings. He says he and his wife have been victims of porch pirates dozens of times.

“My wife ordered a jacket that was $1,500 and they took it,” Mejia said.

Just last Wednesday, his camera caught a man stealing a package with sneakers off their porch.

In attempt to catch the thief, Mejia put out a decoy package, filled with old French fries, used puppy training pads and dog feces, and armed himself with a baseball bat.

Sure enough, he got a nibble and reeled himself in a suspected petit larcenist. All of it was caught on camera, a video that has since gone viral.

Mejia came out with a bat in hand.

“I wasn’t thinking at the moment,” Mejia said. “It was just anger. I wanted to hurt him. But I know that if I had, I would have been in trouble.”

So, Mejia held the snatcher there by himself until the police arrived.

It wasn’t the same man who stole the sneakers, but it was 36-year-old Victor Stazzone.

At one point, video shows Stazzone trying to get away, but he was ultimately arrested for stealing and trespassing.

Mejia handled the situation about as well as anyone could, but authorities have always cautioned civilians from engaging a suspected criminal.

Thankfully, the suspect wasn’t armed, and no one was hurt.

There is no word on what charges, if any, the suspected porch pirate might be facing.

Mejia say he hopes the video is enough to make people think twice before swiping packages.

“Cause today it was me with a bat. That somebody else could pull out a shotgun and not be as nice as I was, you know? And losing your life for $200. It’s not what you want,” Mejia said.

The New York City Department of Transportation says 90,000 packages are lost or stolen in the city every single day.

  • Family’s search for missing Queens woman concludes with discovery she died at nursing home

Family’s search for missing Queens woman concludes with discovery she died at nursing home

    [ad_1]

FLUSHING, Queens (WABC) — Smack dab in the middle of downtown Flushing, Queens is a shopping plaza where shoppers will find a jeweler and herbs.

Tucked away in the back is Judy Tailor, where 68-year-old Xiuping Shen, a well-known seamstress, famously worked before she vanished sometime in November.

“She’s famous for her job,” said Harriette Lo of Tianjin Commerce Association. “People say a year, 365 days, she’s been working 364 days.”

Shen’s family is all in China, and after not being able to reach her for two months they contacted Lo, who got the police involved.

In mid-January, they found her at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital.

“I talked to her doctor,” said Lo. “The doctor told me about her situation there. And the doctor said she’ll be ok. Maybe next week she will discharge.”

Shen had been sick for a while with kidney failure.

She was discharged a week later, but no one was able to find her.

“They cannot tell us anything because we are not the emergency contact person,” said Lo.

Harriette enlisted the help of State Assembly Ron Kim, who was able to convince the hospital that the family authorized him to speak on their behalf.

The hospital told him Shen had been discharged to a nursing home.

However, when they got to the facility, they discovered she had passed away in their care on Jan. 29.

“Harriette went there to try to get more information,” Kim said. “They wouldn’t communicate with Harriette.”

Shen’s cause of death was kidney failure.

Given the news, the family is now working on coming to the US to close the loop on these frantic couple of months with a proper burial.

“Just when we called them it was at that time period where they were about to dispose the remains at a public cemetery,” said Kim. “We were able to intervene and through Harriette and her people remove the remains to a local funeral home as our office is expediting their visas from abroad to come here to have a proper funeral and then take the remains back to China.”

  • NYC man who dismembered woman watched

NYC man who dismembered woman watched

    [ad_1]

A New York man was convicted Monday for killing and dismembering a woman after fraudulently taking out a life insurance policy in her name – then trying to collect the benefits, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Cory Martin watched crime shows including “Dexter” and “The First 48” for tips on how to get away with killing the woman, a sex worker who he managed, a co-conspirator testified during the two-week Brooklyn federal court trial.

Lawyers for Martin didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn, said the mandatory life sentence that comes with the top charge of murder-for-hire is fitting for a “ghastly, cold-blooded crime” that had been carefully planned and motivated by greed.

“Martin saw the victim as a moneymaker, trafficking her for commercial sex, then after killing her with his bare hands, tossing out her slaughtered body parts like trash so he could profit from her death,” Peace said in a statement.

The 36-year-old Queens resident was charged in the 2018 death of Brandy Odom, a 26-year-old whose body was found scattered in a park in Brooklyn.

Prosecutors said Martin, Odom and the co-conspirator, Adelle Anderson, lived together in Queens.

They appeared on the NYPD’s radar after a cadaver dog picked up the dead woman’s scent in one of their cars, CBS New York reported.

Prosecutors say Martin and Anderson fraudulently obtained two life insurance policies in Odom’s name the year before Martin strangled Odom in her bedroom in April 2018.

Anderson, who has pleaded guilty to charges related to the life insurance scheme and murder plot, testified in Martin’s trial that the two watched the true-crime show “The First 48” before Odom’s death for ways to avoid being caught. She also said Martin watched “Dexter,” a Showtime series about a fictional serial killer, according to Peace’s office.

Prosecutors say that Martin searched Home Depot’s website for a “Dewalt 12-Amp Corded Reciprocating Saw,” described as featuring a “powerful 12 Amp motor designed for heavy-duty applications.”  He also allegedly searched YouTube for “how to insert blade for reciprocating saw” and “using reciprocating saw.”

The two then purchased cleaning supplies, covered their entire bathroom with heavy-duty black garbage bags and dismembered Odom’s body in a bathtub before disposing of it in Canarsie Park, Anderson testified.

In the ensuing days, as the body parts were discovered and police launched an investigation, Martin conducted dozens of internet searches for news articles, prosecutors said.

Martin searched one article headlined “Search area expands after dismembered body found in Canarsie Park in Brooklyn” and also accessed a Twitter post titled “Person walking dog discovers remains of woman in Brooklyn park,” prosecutors said.  Martin also allegedly searched YouTube using the search term “exclusive interview of mother of girl found in park.”

Martin and Anderson made several unsuccessful attempts to claim benefits under Odom’s life insurance policies and the two were eventually apprehended in 2020, according to prosecutors.

Nicole Odom told the New York Times her daughter “liked to be her own boss” and had moved out when she was 18 to begin pursuing various job-training certificates.

“Brandy Odom suffered an unthinkable death at the defendant’s hands, but her life mattered and I hope that this verdict holding the defendant responsible brings some measure of closure to her family,” said Peace, the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn.

NEW YORK — A guilty verdict was reached Tuesday in the murder trial for two men charged with killing Run-D.M.C. star Jam Master Jay.

The hip-hop icon, whose real name was Jason Mizell, was gunned down in 2002 inside his music studio in Hollis, Queens.

Prosecutors said Mizell’s godson, Karl Jordan Jr., and his childhood friend, Ronald Washington, killed the DJ after he cut them out of a cocaine trafficking deal.

Officials hold news conference after Jam Master Jay murder trial verdict

    06:53

While many celebrated the guilty verdict, others said justice came at a price.

The jury spent three days deliberating one of the most elusive murders in hip-hop history.

“Although it appeared that the case had gone cold and would not be solved, law enforcement never wavered in its determination to bring Mr. Mizell’s killers to justice,” U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said. “It’s no mystery why it took so long. Witnesses were terrified that they would be retaliated against if they cooperated with law enforcement.”

“It’s definitely a long time coming,” said Carlis Thompson, Mizell’s cousin. “Justice delayed is not always justice denied.”

A courtroom sketch depicts the verdict being announced on Feb. 27, 2024.

Eyewitnesses testified that Jordan murdered Mizell inside his studio on Oct. 30, 2002, while childhood friend Washington guarded the door with a gun.

But the month-long trial revealed parts of Mizell’s life that the hip-hop icon tried to keep out of the public eye — mainly his role in trafficking cocaine. Prosecutors said when Mizell cut Jordan and Washington out of a deal to sell coke in Baltimore, they conspired to kill him, with the help of a third suspect, Jay Bryant.

Bryant was charged last year. Prosecutors say he slipped into the studio and let Jordan and Washington in through a fire escape.

Bryant has pleaded not guilty and will face a judge in a separate trial.

When asked if justice came at a price, Mizell’s cousin, Ryan Thompson, said, “Yes. [I have] to answer yes because I didn’t know either until I was told. We wasn’t brought up like that. That’s not how we were raised.”

Defense attorneys called only one witness, a memory expert, who testified to the crux of their case — the only things connecting Jordan and Washington to Mizell’s murder were aging memories. The defense also tried to pin the murder on Bryant, the only suspect whose DNA was found in the studio — on a hat located beside Mizell’s body.

Jacqueline Gonzalez, Jordan’s mother, said, “My son had nothing to do with this crime,” Jordan’s mother, Jacqueline Gonzalez, said Tuesday. “I’m still devastated. I can’t believe they found him– from all the facts that they got from this case, I can’t believe that they found him guilty.”

Jordan, 40, and Washington, 59, face 20 years to life in federal prison. Defense attorneys have already vowed to appeal the conviction.

While the death penalty is possible with these charges, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland last June directed Brooklyn federal prosecutors not to seek it.

  • Candidates to replace George Santos in Congress discuss migrant crisis on campaign trail

Candidates to replace George Santos in Congress discuss migrant crisis on campaign trail

    [ad_1]

QUEENS VILLAGE, Queens (WABC) — The candidates looking to replace expelled Congressman George Santos hit the campaign trail on Thursday.

Republican candidate Mazi Pilip called out her opponent, former Congressman Tom Suozzi, a Democrat, for what she says is his open border policy when it comes to migrants.

Pilip, an immigrant from Israel, and Congressman Anthony D’Esposito say the way Democrats are handling the migrant crisis is having a negative impact on communities through New York City and the neighborhoods surrounding the Creedmoor Psychiatric Facility.

“Look around me, that playground used to be full of young kids playing here, now parents tell me they are afraid to bring their children here — why? Because just across the street in the back, a massive tent city was built to house 1,000 migrants,” Pilip said.

So far in the campaign, Pilip is known better for what she doesn’t say than what she does — including everything from government funding to why she has only committed to one debate with her challenger Suozzi.

“I have been available to the press every time when I got the request and I am happy to speak and I have a debate coming Feb 8th…only one,” Pilip said. “When they announced my name it was only six weeks ago, it’s a short time to meet people, engage myself to be available for press and do a debate.”

After Pilip’s event on Thursday, her opponent arrived.

“In this post-age of George Santos, I don’t know how anybody can think they can run for U.S. Congress for the 3rd Congressional district and not be transparent with the people, not make themselves completely available in every single way,” Suozzi said.

Suozzi also blamed Republicans with trying to mislead the public about a complicated situation.

He said people care about the issue and want to solve it.

“They’re focused on this issue, they want the problem solved, they’re sick of the finger-pointing, also they want to get a deal on Ukraine, and on Israel, so this is the best opportunity to make a deal in 35 years, but President Trump said ‘I don’t want you to make a deal with the border because it would give a victory to Biden and I couldn’t use it as a political issue,’” Suozzi said.

Many think the back and forth is a moot point as the race is falling along party lines with redistricting playing a key role.

The Bronx, which is heavily Democrat, is no longer included — but Levittown and Massapequa, both Republican strongholds, are included.

The special election is set for Feb. 13.

Queens woman beaten to death by teen tenant in back rent clash: NYPD

    [ad_1]

A Queens woman was beaten to death in her home by an upstairs teen tenant during a crazed quarrel over back rent, cops said Thursday.

Zoraida Leo, 55, was found dead inside her East Elmhurst home on Tuesday, cops said.

Police responding to Leo’s home on 96th St. near 32nd Ave. at 5:15 p.m. found the woman sprawled out on the floor with scratches on her face, cops said.

Cops quickly determined Leo had died from an assault and zeroed in on upstairs tenant Davi Vidal, arresting him the day her body was found, a police source said. Vidal, 19, attacked Leo during an argument over unpaid rent, cops said.

Cops charged Vidal with murder. His arraignment in Queens Criminal Court was pending Thursday.

  • New York Gov. Hochul picks February date for special election to Santos seat in House

New York Gov. Hochul picks February date for special election to Santos seat in House

    [ad_1]

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A special election to pick a successor to George Santos, the New York Republican who was expelled from the U.S. House last week, will be held on Feb. 13, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday.

The race for a seat representing some Long Island suburbs and a small part of the New York City borough of Queens is expected to be a high-profile contest that will mark the start of a year of consequential congressional elections in the state.

For Democrats, the election will be a test of the party’s ability to flip districts around New York City that are seen as vital to their plans to retake control of the House. Republicans enter the contest with heavy momentum on Long Island and will fight to hold on to the district as they look to maintain their narrow House majority.

From the archives (December 2022): Yes, top House Republicans knew of George Santos’s lies before his election in November

Candidates in the special election will be picked by party leaders, not voters.

Former U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi has emerged as the potential frontrunner nominee for Democrats. Suozzi, 61, represented the district for six years before launching an unsuccessful campaign for governor last year, and previously held political posts as a county executive and mayor on Long Island.

The centrist Democrat’s deep ties in Long Island politics may provide name recognition and the ability to quickly stand up a campaign — vital attributes in an narrowly focused election where voters will have a limited amount of time to pick their representative.

From the archives (January 2023): George Santos has ‘disgraced’ U.S. House and should resign, say fellow Long Island Republicans

Suozzi had announced his campaign for the seat before Santos was expelled, and has been promoting a series of endorsements from local politicians and labor groups after the district became vacant.

Also vying for the Democratic nomination is former state senator Anna Kaplan, who has in recent days taken potshots at Suozzi’s record and sought to center the special election on passing federal legislation guaranteeing abortion rights.

On the Republican side, potential names include retired police detective Mike Sapraicone, Air Force veteran Kellen Curry and Nassau County legislator Mazi Pilip, an Ethiopian-born Jewish woman who served in the Israeli military.

Sapraicone, who is also the founder of a private security company, said he has been interviewed by county Republicans who will select the nominee, with the panel quizzing him on his political stances, his ability to fundraise and quickly launch a campaign.

Like Suozzi, Sapraicone launched his campaign before Santos was expelled and has already begun to fundraise, with his campaign coffers including $300,000 of his own money, he said.

“For us to maintain the House and retain the majority is so important,” Sapraicone said. “It’s so important that New York sets the tone here in February.”

Democrats want to flip at least five House seats in New York next year, with the Santos seat being a potential early indicator of their chances in November.

The party has dedicated significant financial and organizational resources to the state, after a series of losses last year in the New York City suburbs helped Republicans take control of the House and brought down heavy criticism on state Democrats.

President Joe Biden won the district in 2020, but Republicans have notched electoral gains on Long Island in recent years as moderate suburban voters there, in contrast to urban areas in much of the country, have shown signs of gravitating toward the GOP.

In the latest sign of Republican strength on Long Island, the GOP won several local elections last month, including races in the now-vacant district.

Santos was expelled from the House last week following a scandal-plagued tenure in Congress and a looming criminal trial. He is only the sixth member in the chamber’s history to be ousted by colleagues.

He had survived an expulsion vote just a month earlier.

  • Headless Dismembered Torso Found In Queens Believed To Be Missing Irish Filmmaker – Perez Hilton

Headless Dismembered Torso Found In Queens Believed To Be Missing Irish Filmmaker – Perez Hilton

    [ad_1]

Sadly the case of the mysterious dismembered body and the case of the missing filmmaker may be one and the same…

On Friday a headless, armless body was discovered lying on the sand at Breezy Point Beach in Queens, New York. The horrifying discovery seems to be the answer to a seemingly unrelated missing persons case — as law enforcement sources told NBC News on Monday the body is believed to be that of a missing Irish filmmaker.

Ross McDonnell, a filmmaker who won an Emmy for his work as a cinematographer on Showtime‘s The Trade, has been missing since November 4. He had last been seen leaving his Bed-Stuy apartment on his bicycle. The bike was later found abandoned at Fort Tilden Beach, not too far from Breezy Point. Now they think they’ve found him…

Shockingly, authorities do NOT suspect foul play in McDonnell’s death. It’s believed he may have gone for a swim and drowned. The dismemberment is thought to have been caused by the body’s exposure to nature over multiple days, before washing up on shore.

    Damn. That’s terrible.

It’s unclear why this body is believed to be McDonnell, but they must be pretty sure if they’re willing to tell the press. Authorities are working with the Irish consulate on the investigation. They’re currently awaiting DNA test results to confirm McDonnell’s identity. Still, anyone with information about McDonnell is being asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).

Drunk driving NYPD sgt found in precinct office clad in only his underwear: prosecutors

    [ad_1]

An on-duty NYPD sergeant accused of driving drunk to work was found in a Queens Internal Affairs Bureau office stripped down to his underwear and swaying unsteadily on his feet moments after he clocked in, prosecutors said Saturday.

Sgt. Braulio Aponte, who joined IAB last month, was discovered in a third floor office on Northern Blvd. near 31st St. by his supervisor about 1:50 p.m. Wednesday.

The IAB have an office in the Northern Blvd. building, which also houses a New York City Criminal Justice Agency supervised release office, officials said.

“I f—- up!” the clearly inebriated Aponte said, admitting to his lieutenant that he had drank alcohol before showing up at work and that he drove to work intoxicated, according to a criminal complaint filed with the Queens District Attorney’s office.

Cops located Aponte’s Honda in a parking garage next to the office building, and found an open bottle of Tequila on the floor of the car’s rear passenger seat.

Surveillance video taken from the garage showed Aponte driving into the parking garage and walking to his office. It was not clear why he was only in his underwear when his lieutenant found him.

Cops charged Aponte with drunk driving. He was ordered released without bail during a brief arraignment hearing on Thursday.

Aponte, 40, a 13-year veteran, was suspended without pay, cops said.
