  • Driver of white pickup truck in custody after pursuit through South LA

    The driver of a white pickup truck is in custody after leading authorities on a pursuit through South Los Angeles Saturday night.

    Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department began chasing the driver of a Ford F350 truck in Huntington Park.

    The driver was seen speeding through streets with their headlights off. The pursuit then continued into South LA.

    Several police units were following closely behind the truck when the driver would slow down and then back up, ramming into a police unit.

    As the driver attempted to evade police, he was also seen driving on the wrong side of the road several times.

    The chase came to an end when officers successfully completed a PIT maneuver and pinned the truck on East 16th Street and South Alameda.

  • Driver and passenger hide in Koreatown high-rise apartment after chase

    A driver and passenger ditched a stolen pickup and ran inside a Koreatown apartment complex early Friday morning at the end of a Los Angeles pursuit.

    The chase began after police attempted to pull over a driver suspected of DUI near Normandie Avenue and Beverly Boulevard. The man and woman ditched pickup on a curb at the driveway entrance to the Ambassador Towers high-rise apartment on Irolo Street near Wilshire Boulevard.

    Officers, including a K-9 team, searched multiple floors of the building and found the man and woman on the 12th and 6th floors. The man was found inside a vacant apartment unit. Details about the woman’s location were not immediately available.

    Police said the pickup, registered in the San Diego area, was reported stolen in August.

  • Pursuit of tractor trailer travels from Fontana to Orange County

    The pursuit of a stolen tractor trailer Wednesday morning started in the Fontana area, crossed through LA County and into Orange County.

    The pursuit began at around 9:30 a.m. on Palmetto Avenue and Foothill Boulevard in Fontana.

    The driver continued through the 60 and 57 freeways heading into Brea.

    The chase continued through Orange County, passing by the Cal State Fullerton campus.

    According to the Fontana Police Department, the vehicle may be stolen and could possibly be tied to a kidnapping.

    Police said a passenger tried calling 911, saying that the driver was not letting them out of the vehicle, but the call was disconnected.

    At one point in the pursuit the driver was seen opening the door, and what appeared to be a water bottle fell out of the vehicle.

    The pursuit then continued through the Orange County area.

    While driving through Garden Grove on Commonwealth Avenue, the trailer was struck by a BearCat.

    Police put an end to a snail-paced pursuit with a PIT maneuver on Monday in Los Feliz.

    NewsChopper4 followed along as officers tried to yield a driver traveling at slow speeds around East Hollywood and Los Feliz. Although the driver wasn’t traveling recklessly, they had a close call with a pedestrian crossing a street at some point.

    The driver ran over a spike strip during the chase and dragged it for a considerable amount of time. Thanks to the slow driving, police were able to successfully execute a PIT maneuver near Los Feliz Boulevard and Serrano Avenue, disabling the vehicle.

    The driver then barricaded themselves in the vehicle before eventually getting out about 40 minutes later. That individual’s name was not released. It’s unclear what charges they may face.

  • 2 Solano County men arrested following pursuit along Northern California coast

    Two men from Solano County were arrested on suspicion of multiple felonies following a lengthy pursuit on Highway 101 along the Northern California coast over the weekend.

    According to the Ukiah Police Department, the incident began on Saturday, when officers were notified by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office about an investigation into the alleged theft of firearms. The sheriff’s office alerted authorities about two adult male suspects traveling in a gray Toyota Matrix hatchback heading southbound on the highway.

    Mendocino County sheriff’s deputies along with the California Highway Patrol located the Toyota near the community of Willits and attempted to pull over the vehicle. Police said the suspects failed to yield and initiated a pursuit that had to be discontinued due to hazardous conditions.

    “During the chase, the suspects drove recklessly at high speeds—often in the wrong direction of traffic—posing significant danger to the public,” police said in a statement.

    Officers in Ukiah, about 20 miles south of Willits, positioned themselves on the highway at North State Street to assist. The officers deployed stop sticks, which deflated the suspect vehicle’s front tires.

    Police said the suspects continued their pursuit through Ukiah, even after both front tires detached from the vehicle. The pursuit ended south of the town of Hopland, more than 30 miles from where the vehicle was first spotted, and the suspects were taken into custody without further incident.

    Officers identified the suspects as 28-year-old Elie Raphael JeanBaptiste of Vacaville and 23-year-old Dominique Jason Gulick of Vallejo.

    Police said an investigation determined Gulick had thrown a backpack containing an assault rifle from the vehicle near the Cal Fire station north of Hopland. Meanwhile, JeanBaptiste was found to be on Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) out of Solano County for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

    Gulick was booked into the Mendocino County Jail on possession of stolen property, destruction of evidence, possession of an assault weapon and conspiracy. JeanBaptiste was booked on a PRCS violation, possession of an assault weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, felony evading, possession of stolen property, conspiracy and other offenses.

    Police said Gulick is being held on $300,000 bail, while JeanBaptiste is being held without bail.

    A suspected serial rapist wanted in connection with the rape of two women in Massachusetts in 1989 was arrested in Los Angeles on Thursday following a lengthy police chase.

    Officers located the suspect, Stephen Paul Gale, 71, who was driving a dark SUV, shortly after 4 p.m. in the Wilmington area and began their pursuit, according to U.S. Marshals.

    Gale led police onto the 110 and 405 freeways, eventually exiting the freeway onto surface streets on L.A.’s Westside while driving at a moderate speed, KTLA5-TV and ABC7-TV reported.

    The hour and a half pursuit came to an end on Medical Plaza Drive in Westwood near Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, said Kevin Terzes, spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department.

    Police surrounded the driver’s vehicle with guns drawn, KTLA5 reported. The driver surrendered and was taken into custody.

    His arrest was the result of a decades-long nationwide manhunt for Gale, who was charged with aggravated rape and kidnapping of two women in Massachusetts in 1989.

    He was recently identified through genetic genealogy as a suspect in a series of rapes in Boston from 1989-90, authorities said.

    At the time of the incidents, Gale’s identity was unknown and he was referred to simply as the “Boston Strip Mall Rapist.”

    Gale had been on the run for years before he was finally identified as the suspect in the 1989 case, according to federal authorities. He had last been seen in public in 2008.

    In May, the U.S. Marshals Office released a wanted announcement for Gale in connection with the 1989 case and a reward for his capture of up to $5,000. In addition, the announcement said Gale was also wanted for questioning in connection with the series of rapes in the greater Boston area.

    San Fernando police initiated the pursuit just after 7 p.m. after the driver refused to pull over.

    The vehicle was driven with a crashed windshield after the driver reached a dead end in an industrial area in Arleta and drove through a yellow gate.

    The wrecked red Prius reached speeds of over 100 mph on the freeway, having multiple close calls with other vehicles.

    The pursuit ended in a gated residential area in Sunland where the suspect was able to get inside and initiate a foot race with officers.

    The driver was arrested, and booked for having an outstanding felony warrant, reckless driving, and evading the police.

    The red Prius was part of an earlier chase that officers in patrol SUVs pulled off of due to safety, the LAPD confirms.

    FAIRFIELD — Interstate 80 was shut down in both directions in Fairfield for about three hours Friday by a police standoff with a freeway shooting suspect that ended in his death.

    The driver of a silver Toyota sedan led police on a multi-county chase from the North Bay to the East Bay until the vehicle was stopped by a strip of spikes just east of I-80’s interchange with Highway 12, California Highway Patrol Officer David deRutte said.

    Aerial footage initially captured the vehicle as it was traveling through Richmond. Multiple police and CHP units followed the silver Toyota Corolla on eastbound I-80, passing through San Pablo, Hercules, Rodeo and Vallejo, slowing at times due to traffic. 

    CHP later confirmed the incident originated in the Santa Rosa area late Friday morning. At around 11 a.m., the suspect in the car shot at a black SUV while traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 101 in Windsor before traveling into Santa Rosa.

    A shot went through the back of a black SUV driven by a woman north of Hopper Avenue. The shooting didn’t appear to have been provoked and seemed to be at random, deRutte said.

    The woman, who wasn’t injured, exited the highway and called 911 and described the shooter’s vehicle, deRutte said.

    The vehicle was located about 2 p.m. in the parking lot of a Rohnert Park shopping center with the driver inside. It got away as police attempted to close in.

    The car fled south on U.S. 101 into Marin County, turned east on state Highway 37 before reversing course and returning to southbound U.S. 101 to Interstate 580.

    At around 3:45 p.m., the car slowed down and came to a stop on the freeway at the Lopes Road overpass near Cordelia Junction that connects to I-680 in Fairfield. Authorities were able to lay spike strips down that the suspect drove over.

    Authorities stopped both eastbound and westbound traffic on I-80, with traffic detoured off the freeway to get around the incident. The northbound I-680 transition to eastbound and westbound I-80 was also closed. Westbound I-80 traffic was diverted at Suisun Valley Road.

    The Fairfield Police Department’s SWAT team arrived on scene  at around 5 p.m. and attempted to convince the suspect to surrender, according to California Highway Patrol officer Michael Barday.

    A pair of armored SWAT vehicles converged on the Corolla at around 5:50 p.m., boxing the suspect vehicle in. Officers appeared to use some sort of gas device near the vehicle at around 6:18 p.m.

    About 15 minutes later, about a dozen officers approached the vehicle and appeared to make a forced entry into one of the rear doors. A short time later, a male individual was pulled from the back seat on the driver’s side and appeared to be incapacitated.

    ICHP later confirmed that the suspect fatally shot himself. 

    The Solano CHP office confirmed at 6:44 p.m. that westbound lanes of I-80  and the northbound I-680 transition to eastbound and westbound I-80 were both reopening.

    Shortly after 7 p.m., the  No. 1 and No. 2 lanes of eastbound I-80 reopened. Lanes 3-5 remained blocked for the police investigation. Motorists were advised to expect delay and to use alternate routes.

    A possible DUI driver who led police on a high-speed chase from Newport Beach to San Pedro surrendered to authorities following the ordeal.

    The chase began sometime around 11 p.m. after the California Highway Patrol responded to a suspected DUI driver. At times exceeding speeds of 100 mph, the driver traveled on freeways at dangerous speeds while trying to evade officers.

    Eventually, the driver exited onto surface streets in San Pedro and surrendered to law enforcement near the intersection on 7th Street and Harbor Boulevard around 11:30 p.m.
