I often joke with my children that they are never going to learn the fine art of writing cursive… or win any spelling bees… thanks to a little gadget we call the computer.

Chrome books are almost a staple in American
classrooms these days, starting at the elementary level. Kids are actually
being asked to type, instead of write.

Legible
penmanship… who needs it?

Cursive?
Is that a board game??

How do
you spell “progress”?

While we weren’t paying attention… technological advances have allowed text messaging, email, video chat, and social media to replace actual phone conversations and snail-mail.

Do you know what else it’s done?

It has essentially eliminated the dictionary.

The days of looking up how to spell a word, or
its definition, are a thing of the past… unless you fancy yourself quirky and
carry a Merriam Webster around with you for kicks.

Your computer, tablet, smartphone will either
suggest a replacement word – or automatically correct – spelling for you. Heck,
it will even define a word for you and list synonyms.

And now, this technology has gone a step
further… capable of detecting our tone and checking our grammar, thanks to a
little application called Grammarly.

The Grammarly checker tool is committed to providing its users with clear, mistake-free writing that makes the right impression. It goes beyond your basic spell checker tool to help you create clear and concise messages across all applications.

In this Grammarly review, I’ll explain:

Grammarly is an online support tool that not only corrects spelling but also provides suggestions for:
1. Proper grammar and punctuation
2. Tone & Mood

4. Clarity

6. Vocabulary
7. Plagiarism
Some of these are included in the basic
membership, while others require a premium package. But more on that later.

Grammarly touts itself on being perfect for aspiring writers, bloggers, marketers, copywriters, students, proposal and report writers, journalists… but it’s also just dandy for social media addicts who want to pack a punch with their posts.

Signing up is free and simple… all you need
is an email address, Google or Facebook account.

But, if you’re like most people, you’re likely
wondering “why should I bother?”.

I mean,
isn’t spell check sufficient?

My phone
even does it for me.

True.

You don’t actually need anything that
Grammarly is selling… and, yes, they are eventually going to try and sell you
on additional features.

That being said, what is also true is this…

Anybody who craves those added features (like tone, clarity, the plagiarism check) would be hard-pressed to find an app that does it better than Grammarly.

Grammarly is the best, hands down.

It’s got a fun vibe to it… almost as if a
buddy is offering suggestions on how to make your writing better, instead of
just telling you to change something with no explanation as to why.

The average spell and punctuation checker will
just underline a word and ask you to hit, “change”. Heck, it may even
autocorrect it.

But what
do you learn from that?

Grammarly doesn’t play that game.

In fact, if a word is spelled incorrectly, Grammarly will underline it in red and a suggestion will pop up. Then, a note will read, “We didn’t find that word in our dictionary. If you’re sure that the spelling is correct, you can add it to your personal dictionary.”

Yes, Grammarly offers you a customizable
personal dictionary… which is great for things like nicknames or slang terms
you may use often in your writing.

Pretty cool, right?

How
to Use the Grammarly Checker

If you are using a desktop, Grammarly offers a free Chrome browser extension. It claims to make the experience more seamless by eliminating the need to switch between screens – or have to copy and paste the text.

This is especially handy if you’re using the
program for online posting.

Besides Chrome, Grammarly also works with
these popular web browsers:

Now, if I am being honest, many desktop-based
apps want you to download a browser extension and I’m just not a fan of
cluttered toolbars.

Plus, I’ve had a few experiences with
extensions causing various programs to go haywire.

Full disclosure: There were some reviews claiming that Grammarly’s chrome extension caused problems in Google Sheets and Docs.

[Editor comment: I have been using Grammarly for about two years now. I have the extension and use google docs/sheets all the time. I have personally not seen any of the errors mentioned above.]

So… I chose not to add the extension and see
what happens.

It’s honestly not the end of the world.

When you log in for the first time, the desktop version displays a demo document – which goes over what Grammarly can do.

The platform appears rather simplistic — equipped with a sidebar assistant that displays performance, alerts, and goals. By clicking on the “overall score” tab, a separate window displays a score that is given for the overall quality of writing in the document.

The window also displays word count and
readability.

Your score can be increased by adhering to Grammarly’s suggestions, which is also easy. Accepting suggestions simply involves clicking on them. In fact, Grammarly explains why it made the suggestion and then directs you on what to click in order to change it.

It’s basically like having an English
professor standing behind you while writing a paper.

The basic version of Grammarly limits document
change suggestions to:
Correctness (punctuation, grammar, spelling)

Clarity (unnecessary wordiness)
A premium version will include these
additional suggestions:
Engagement

Delivery (tone)

Word choices

Text inconsistencies

Passive voice misuse

Incorrect phrasing

Also included with premium is a plagiarism
search and third party proofreading.

Once you’ve gone through the demo document and
familiarize yourself with the click-to-edit format, you can then opt to take a
quick tour to get you started.

It explains what Grammarly can help you with
– beyond grammar and punctuation. The
program provides feedback and helps you to identify your audience, so your
writing is more concise.

Once the tour is over, you’re ready to start
writing. You have 3 choices with the desktop version:
1. Create a new document
2. Copy & Paste a document
3. Upload a document
This can be done in the pulldown menu, marked by Grammarly’s green arrow-like icon.

For the purposes of this review, I chose to copy and paste my article into the Grammarly tool… at which point a window popped up asking me to “Set Goals”. These include:
Audience

Formality

Tone

Intent

Domain (premium membership only)
You can choose to turn this “Set Goals”
feature off.

I am happy to report receiving a score of
83/100 on my original document… which then increased to 96/100 after accepting
a few of Grammarly’s minor edits.

Not too shabby.

In addition to using the online version of Grammarly, the program does offer a downloadable plug-in for Microsoft Office.

Sadly, Google Docs (which is where I do all of
my writing) does not currently offer a standalone plug-in. You must use the
Chrome extension to utilize Grammarly in Google Docs.

That being said, I just copied and pasted my document into Grammarly and it worked
just fine. I guess I didn’t mind the extra step for a tidier toolbar.

If you are using Grammarly on a smartphone or
tablet, you’ll need to download the free app via Google Play or iTunes.

Once the download is complete, click on the icon to open the app and select how to sign up… Google, Facebook or email.

Once you’re all set up, you will be asked to
go into your device settings and allow the Grammarly keyboard installation.
Doing so will replace your current keyboard, which is the only way Grammarly
can work on your smartphone or tablet.

There is a warning that pops up after you elect to use the Grammarly keyboard… basically saying that anything you type may be stored and saved by a third party. This includes passwords, credit card info, etc….

I use an Android phone, so I suspect that the
warning is coming from my Google-centric device.

That being said, it was enough to lend me
pause.

I mean, identity theft is running rampant… and
the best hackers are finding their way through even the best antivirus
software.

But
keyboard strokes on my phone?

Really?

It’s possible.

Anything is possible.

Still, I accepted the warning and installed the Grammarly keyboard because I’m passionate about my writing and wanted to give a thorough review… oh, and because I have Bitdefender on my phone.

Ah ha.

Anywho… the keyboard is pretty basic. Has the Grammarly icon in the top left corner. There are a few “suggested” words for autofill across the top.

The main difference was the numbers, which my
android keyboard places in the top row above its letters… Grammarly requires you
tap a special key to access numbers.

Honestly, it’s a preference thing and wasn’t a deal-breaker. It may not bother you at all.

The Grammarly icon is what you click on for
clarification of suggested edits. It took some getting used to for me… but, overall,
it is still a pretty cool feature and poses a similar look to the desktop
version’s editor.

Furthermore, because Grammarly has its own
keyboard, it works on anything you attempt to type from your device.

Social media posts.

Text messages.

Emails.

Google docs.

Direct messaging (ie… Slack, Skype,
Zoom)

The keyboard works across all apps.

Grammarly is a business,
folks.

And albeit a super cool
and innovative one… its founders want to make money.

Isn’t that the point of starting a business?

So while they do offer
tiered levels of membership, it’s not mandatory in order to enjoy the basics.

Basic FREE membership includes:
Critical grammar, spelling and punctuation checks

Consciousness/Clarity (wordiness)

Tone detection (formal, casual)
Premium membership
includes some great additional features, such as:
Fluency

Readability

Engagement (sentence variety and vocabulary)

Additional tone detections (confidence, politeness, inclusive, formality level)

Plagiarism check (Grammarly will check your work against 16 billion web pages to ensure it’s original content)
Premium membership starts at $11.66 per month, billed annually. You may also opt to pay quarterly or monthly, but the best value is in the annual package… which saves you roughly $200 versus the monthly membership.

Both basic and premium
members receive access on 5 devices, by a single user.

Sadly, Grammarly doesn’t offer a free trial of its premium membership at this time.

So, if you’re curious yet skittish, you can opt to try it for one month. I am told that Grammarly will refund your money, no questions asked, within 10-days if you don’t like it.

Beyond the ten days,
Grammarly allows you to cancel without incurring further charges, provided you
do so before your term ends (1 month, 3 month or 12 month). You will have access to Grammarly for the
remainder of your term.

Is
Grammarly Worth It?

Whether it be an item. A
service. A trip. A school. A job. A person… deciding if something or someone is
worth your time, effort or money is a question we will all need to answer
throughout our lives.

Grammarly is one of those
questions.

If you are a professional
writer, student… or just work in a field where writing effective documents is
important, Grammarly Premium is 100% worth it. In fact, it may even be a tax
write off in some cases.

The app is fresh, easy to
navigate and actually makes sense! When you read Grammarly’s suggestions, you
will find yourself saying, “That does sound better!”. I promise you.

I also promise I’ve never
done that with the old spell checker.

Conversely, if you are not
writing very much… perhaps just some posts here and there… I’m not sure you’d
want to pay the monthly fee for premium.
Quite honestly, who cares if your posts sound riveting? Or has a confident
tone?

Still, the free version is
a good little tool… miles better than the rest out there.. It is simple to use
and can make you sound like a better writer than you actually are.

In my opinion, anything that helps me grow as a person is worth its weight in gold. Grammarly is one of those things.

The obvious appeal of these shoes is just how comfy they are — and yes, they’re as irresistibly soft and cushiony as you’d imagine. The style boasts a durable leather composition that’s sturdy but not too firm to the point where it feels uncomfortable to wear them. Dyed sheep fur lines the inside of the style, and while it certainly creates a cozier feel, I appreciate that the material isn’t too thick or overbearing to the point that my feet start to feel sweaty. Unlike other everyday slippers, this style has a rubber sole base that’s thick and designed to last, so I don’t have to worry about whether it can withstand being worn on surfaces like concrete, tile, or grass — it holds up well and has just enough of a platform that the slipper’s material doesn’t dirty when being worn beyond my apartment. I love that these shoes seamlessly blend comfort with functionality and the fact that they’re versatile enough to be worn in a number of environments, such as running errands, grabbing brunch, going to and from the gym, or even just around my home.

What’s Worth Noting

I’ve had these slippers for almost eight months now, so I’ve had plenty of time to break them in. Because I work from home and generally only wear them inside or whenever I need to run a quick errand outside of my apartment, I’m not wearing them super extensively, which is why I’ve been pretty surprised by how worn down the inside of the shoe feels, particularly around the toe area. I’ve definitely noticed a change in the cushioning of the shoe, as the inside lining feels more worn down (almost like it’s disintegrating or caving into itself), and several knots have even started forming toward the upper sole of the slipper, making it feel bumpy when I walk. It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of this, especially considering I’ve owned a handful of UGG boots in the past and never had any issue with them before. Perhaps this is simply the nature of what happens when you wear a pair of slippers as frequently as I do — things do eventually have to wear down, after all. However, it’s worth noting that if you want these slippers to be a mainstay in your closet, you’ll likely have to factor in buying a new pair every year — at least if you plan on wearing them as regularly as I do.

Sometimes when products skyrocket in popularity on social media, I steer clear of them. I try to resist the urge to buy into trends just because everyone else is doing so (with a few exceptions, like Kim Kardashian’s Skims and JW Pei handbags). This was precisely the scenario with the Amazon fashion favorite Tanming Sweater Set ($40), which inundated my TikTok feed consistently in 2022. Given my work-from-home lifestyle and penchant for comfy loungewear that can transition into “real” clothing, it would have been completely rational for me to try it out last year. However, I held my ground and resisted until just recently. Now that the frenzy has subsided a bit, I felt validated in placing it in my shopping cart. And the thing is, I’ve come to the realization that I should have embraced it much earlier. Ahead, I dive into what I love about it and why you might need it, too.

What I love about this sweater set is that it looks a hell of a lot more polished than my go-to combination of a mismatched sweatshirt and sweatpants or activewear leggings and an oversize crewneck — while feeling just as comfortable on. Its versatility ensures I can confidently wear it during work meetings without the nagging sense that I should have thrown on something nicer. The price is hard to beat, too. It’s one of my pet peeves when the top and bottom of a two-piece set have to be bought separately. The fact that both pieces together cost under $50 is a win, to say the least.

If given the chance for a do-over with this sweater set, I’d choose the black version (it comes in eight colors). Given my tendency for spills and stains, coupled with my limited supply of beige-colored underwear (more on that shortly), choosing the black option would have been a more practical investment. However, I have no regrets about my initial purchase. The fabric strikes a perfect balance, being soft yet not overly so to tempt me into a day of couch lounging instead of productivity. Plus, it’s a compliment magnet in every sense and offers a mindlessly chic choice for my morning routine.

One of the most important things worth noting about this sweater set is that the fabric (70 percent viscose and 30 percent nylon) isn’t super thick. In all honesty, the material is heftier than I imagined, so much so that it is not see-through in the least when I wear skin-toned undergarments. However, in my experience, I found it to be see-through when I wore it with a dark-colored bra and underwear.

Another factor to take into account is that the brand recommends handwashing exclusively. In the reviews, several buyers who tossed it in the wash observed the waistband becoming twisted, as stated by a reviewer who “tried for over an hour” with no success in untwisting it. This is likely the reason why the brand cautions against machine-washing it, although a few shoppers have reported success despite the risk.

Lastly, the pant length may be a point of contention. As someone who ordered a size medium (I’m 5’9″, for context), I found the pants to be a bit short. Besides the fact that they’re made from high-quality materials, I love that these pants effortlessly walk the line between being modern and yet still classic. They feel like a dream when on, thanks to their soft cotton composition and looser silhouette. Plus, they have ample pocket space, which is great for me because I prefer to carry a smaller bag and as little as possible when I’m on the go — thanks to their deeper design, I can easily squeeze my phone or credit cards into the front or back pockets. What’s Worth Noting

My one qualm with these Lucky Brand jeans is that they feel more stretched out and noticeably looser since the first wear. For context, the first time I wore the low-rise pair, they sat perfectly on my waist and fit very naturally on my body — since then, I can no longer wear them without a belt because they feel so much more lived-in in the waist area (and no, I haven’t lost any weight that might be contributing to this size change). Granted, I understand that this is pretty standard with jeans — denim material is expected to loosen up over time, especially after it’s gone through several wash cycles. That being said, the change in fit has felt a bit more noticeable than with some other pairs that I own from brands like Agolde or H&M. And even reviewers on Lucky Brand’s website have noted that both pants boast a larger fit than many shoppers were anticipating, with the low-rise style even receiving a “feels too large” rating.

Frankly, this wouldn’t deter me from purchasing these jeans again, or even just more styles from Lucky Brand in the future. But if you’re someone who’s adamantly against denim with more of a relaxed, lived-in feel (particularly styles that you can expect will loosen up more over time), these might not be for you.

It’s true — the controversial and alarmingly open-toed shoe that once dominated ’90s fashion has managed to wiggle its way back into the mainstream yet again, though this time with a seemingly much larger fan base that includes everyone from fashion editors to celebrities like Rihanna and Kendall Jenner and more. Love it or hate it, the sexy heeled sandal proved to be huge during the summer season and shows no signs of slowing down throughout the fall — at least not if TikTok has anything to do with it.

I myself have been looking for a way to tap into the trend via a more affordable route — I expect I’ll be spending a lot in the upcoming shopping season and therefore can’t necessarily afford to splurge on the same designer styles loved by today’s biggest stars (sigh). Fortunately, a recent scroll through Nordstrom Rack’s site introduced me to these Dolce Vita Zini Thong Heels ($40, originally $60), which not only tick all of my boxes (stylish with a color variety and durable make) but also boast an under-$50 price tag. I’ve received endless compliments on these shoes, even managing to puzzle many of my editor friends at last month’s New York Fashion Week festivities who were convinced the heeled sandals had to be designer (did I just discover the ultimate shoe dupe?).

Since I’m not in the business of gatekeeping, I break down everything that I love about this shoe and more — from the heel’s strappy design and seamless fit to its endless styling options and more.

As someone who loves finding an affordable alternative or dupe of a more luxurious style, the price tag on these shoes was instantly a huge selling point for me. Thong heels have been bubbling up on my TikTok so much over the last few months that I’ve been desperate to find a way into the trend — though preferably through an outlet that wouldn’t force me to fork over an outrageous amount of money on a designer style I wasn’t necessarily confident would still be relevant next season (after all, the last time these shoes were hot was way back in the ’90s). Beyond the price of these comfy heels, I also appreciate that unlike other pairs of thong styles, this particular style has an additional bit of material that stretches horizontally over the upper portion of the shoe, providing more support for feet when walking. Typical thong sandals will simply rely on a classic, V-shaped design for the shoe’s straps, which — while it might offer more breathing room for toes — tends to create a less practical fit that’s trickier to walk in, especially if the style is made from a sleek material like leather. These cute heels are unique in that they have more of a crisscross design that plays into the thong heel trend but also offers more strap coverage so my feet aren’t aimlessly slipping around in the shoe while walking. Because of this, I’ve had no problem wearing them for longer days outside of the house — from meeting up with my girlfriends for happy hour to running back and forth between shows at New York Fashion Week.

While the crisscross design on these thong sandals makes the shoe significantly easier to walk in, it also creates a much snugger fit that might not be ideal for everyone. The shoes certainly feel narrow while on, and because they’re made from a polyurethane leather material, you can’t necessarily expect they’ll loosen up over time — for context, I’ve worn these heeled mules extensively over the last few months, and they still feel just like they did the first day I tried them on (snug and well-adjusted to my feet). In theory, this is a great thing, because it means the heels won’t wear down or start to feel too lived-in too quickly. But if you’re someone with wider feet or just a person who dislikes the feeling of tighter, more formfitting shoes, then these thong heels might not be the best pair for you.

As a mom who works remotely, I’ve come to terms with the fact that joggers and sneakers have replaced blazers, delicate blouses, and heeled boots as my daily uniform. The seamed legs and slits on the hem of the pants add to the trouser aesthetic. In black, it’s almost hard to tell they’re sweats, but the soft texture has an unmistakable fleece feel. They have pockets at the hip that are lined with a ventilated sports fabric. They’re not too thick or heavy but still feel comfortable on a chilly day.

The sweatshirt has a vintage vibe, with its slightly cropped length, crewneck, and soft-washed fleece that feels like a well-loved T-shirt. I like that it hits the top of my hip and is relaxed without looking sloppy. The length is perfect for wearing with high-waisted jeans, or in this case, high-waisted sweatpants in the same color. I like to tuck just a few inches of the front of the sweatshirt into my pants to create more of a defined waist.

The sweatshirt is lined with the sort of soft material you’d hope to have in a fleece sweatshirt, so it’s really cozy and comfortable. The fleece trouser pants look the same on the outside as the sweatshirt, but they don’t have the same soft lining. They feel more similar to thick leggings rather than cozy sweatpants with soft, fleece lining. They’re still comfortable and softer than jeans, but don’t have the plush feel you’d expect from traditional fleece sweatpants. This is the biggest difference I noticed from GAP’s wide-leg sweatpants, which look the same but feel more like the sweatshirt.
