    None other than death-match legend and independent wrestling deity Joey Janela is coming to Mayhem, and if ever there were a Floridian home for this maniac, it’s MOM. Not to be missed.

  • WWE Raw Star’s Injury Status Receives Massive Update

    It appears one key member of the “WWE Raw” roster has avoided an injury. During Monday’s episode of the red brand, Kofi Kingston of The New Day fell short against LA Knight in singles action.

    Fans were concerned for Kingston, as he took a flush knee to the head during the match.

    During “Wrestling Observer Radio,” Bryan Alvarez reported that Kingston is not listed in WWE’s internal injury report, and he appears to be fine. While Kingston and his tag team partner Xavier Woods aren’t involved in a major storyline, they are both viewed as valuable performers on a weekly basis for WWE’s flagship show. Kingston is also a former WWE Champion who can still deliver marquee singles matches when called upon.

    Kofi Kingston’s Injury History

    While Kingston has been known for his durability, even he hasn’t escaped the injury bug in the past. The former multiple-time WWE Intercontinental Champion underwent elbow surgery back in 2013. He also needed arthroscopic surgery in 2017 after suffering an ankle injury. Kingston was forced to miss “WrestleMania 39” back in 2023 after suffering another ankle injury.

    Kingston’s Current Storyline

    Kingston and Woods continue to mourn the end of The New Day’s run with the WWE World Tag Team Championship. The legendary team had a 72-day reign that ended on the June 30 episode of “Monday Night Raw.” Kingston and Woods were defeated by Finn Balor and JD McDonagh of The Judgment Day.

    The New Day have also taken Grayson Waller under their wing, although Waller isn’t officially considered to be a member of the group. Waller wasn’t around to help Kingston in his match against LA Knight, as he is selling an injury from last week’s six-man tag team match.

    The New Day and Waller were beaten by Penta and the War Raiders. Penta won the match with an avalanche destroyer, which has led to a storyline neck injury for Waller.

    Lee appeared on “Friday Night SmackDown” to provide some backup for her real-life husband, CM Punk, as his feud with Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch exploded over the last week.

    Lynch cost Punk the World Heavyweight Championship at Clash in Paris last weekend and then berated him during a segment on “Monday Night Raw” earlier this week. Punk teased that he had something up his sleeve going into Friday’s show.

    Punk and Lynch addressed each other in the ring.

    “Becky, this is exactly the situation I wanted to avoid,” he said, “because you know and I know and everyone knows, I would never put my hands on a lady. Thankfully, I got somebody who will.”

    Punk turned around and Lee’s entrance music hit. The fans in Chicago were thrown into a frenzy. Lynch was stunned as Lee made her way down to the ring.

    Lee didn’t have much to say. She let her hands do most of the talking. She and Lynch scrapped in the ring before the women’s intercontinental champion scurried a way with help from her real-life husband, Seth Rollins.

    Lee has not been seen in the WWE since she retired in April 2015. It was more than a year after Punk controversially left the company. Lee was involved in Women of Wrestling, a Jeanie Buss-backed promotion, but didn’t return to in-ring action.

    Sidney Raymond Eudy, a professional wrestler known as Sid Vicious who was known for his intense persona and imposing stature, has died, his son announced Monday. He was 63.

    Gunnar Eudy, one of the wrestler’s two sons, wrote on Facebook that his father died after “battling cancer for several years.”

    “He was a man of strength, kindness, and love, and his presence will be greatly missed,” his son wrote. “We appreciate your thoughts and prayers as we grieve this loss.”

    The 6-foot-9-inch Eudy went by many names in the ring, including Sid Justice and Sycho Sid, and rose to prominence at the height of the WrestleMania craze in the 1990s. He was a two-time champion in the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) and also performed for its ’90s rival World Championship Wrestling and the United States Wrestling Association. He faced off against Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker among other stars.

    In a statement, WWE called Eudy “one of the most imposing and terrifying competitors of his generation” who had a “natural charisma that immediately connected with the WWE Universe.”

    “Sid’s reputation as one of the toughest and most thrilling superstars cemented his legacy in WWE, and his influence can still be seen in wrestling rings around the world,” the statement said.

    Eudy was born in West Memphis, Arkansas, and lived in Tennessee for many years. Survivors include his wife, Sabrina Estes Eudy, his sons Frank and Gunnar, and his grandchildren.

    You won’t be seeing John Cena in the ring for much longer. The pro wrestling icon announced his impending retirement from WWE Saturday, making a surprise appearance at the promotion’s “Money in the Bank” event in Toronto.

    “The 2025 Royal Rumble will be my last. The 2025 elimination chamber will be my last. And I’m here tonight to announce that in Las Vegas, Wrestlemania 2025 will be the last Wrestlemania I compete in,” Cena said to the live audience in a video the WWE posted to social media. “I want to say thank you.”

    “Thank you Cena!” The crowd chanted in response.

    The Massachusetts native also expressed his excitement over Netflix’s multi-billion dollar deal acquiring the rights to WWE Raw in January.

    “Raw makes history next year when it moves to Netflix. I’ve never been a part of Raw on Netflix. That is history, that is a first, and I will be there,” Cena said.

    Cena shed more light on his retirement in a post-show press conference, assuring that he would remain a part of the WWE even though his career as a performer was coming to an end — and promising “a long list of dates” between January and September.

    “People say they’re walking away, and two years later they come back. I want to set the record straight right now, I’m done. This is it,” Cena said in the press conference. “If you ever wanted to be a part of this one last time, we’re going to do it as big as we can and we’re fighting everybody and we hope you come enjoy the fun.”

    When asked about his feelings regarding Vince McMahon, the former WWE CEO and founder who stepped down in January amid allegations of sexual assault, Cena declined to give his opinion, saying instead the WWE was “in good hands” with parent company TKO Group Holdings.

    In an interview with Howard Stern in February, Cena said that he was a big advocate of accountability, but would remain a support system for McMahon for now.

    “I’ve openly said, I love the guy, I have a great relationship with the guy, and that’s that,” Cena said to Stern.

    The 47-year-old won 16 world championships over his nearly 20 years in the WWE, going toe-to-toe with the likes of Kurt Angle, Triple H and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson.

    Outside of the ring, Cena released a studio rap album in 2005 and has appeared in several movies and television shows. As his acting career began to flourish with starring roles in projects such as “Bumblebee,” “F9: The Fast Saga,” and “The Suicide Squad,” his appearances in the ring diminished. 

    “There were many before me, there will be many after. I guess what I have left to do is say my thank yous before that chapter closes,” Cena said.

    LAS VEGAS — In the 1971 film “Diamonds are Forever,” James Bond stays in a swanky suite at the Tropicana Las Vegas.

    “I hear that the Hotel Tropicana is quite comfortable,” Agent 007 says.

    It was the Tropicana’s heyday. The lavish casino was a frequent haunt of the legendary Rat Pack, while its past under the mob cemented its place in Vegas lore.

    But after welcoming guests for 67 years, the doors to the Las Vegas Strip’s third-oldest casino will be chained shut at noon Tuesday and demolition is slated for October to make room for a $1.5 billion Major League Baseball stadium — part of the city’s latest rebrand as a hub for sports entertainment.

    “It’s time. It’s ran its course,” Charlie Granado, a bartender at the Tropicana for 38 years, said of the casino’s closure. “It makes me sad but on the other hand, it’s a happy ending.”

    The population of Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, had just surpassed 100,000 when the Tropicana opened on a Strip surrounded by vast, open desert. It cost $15 million to build three stories with 300 rooms split into two wings.

    Its manicured lawns and elegant showroom earned it the nickname “Tiffany of the Strip.” There was a towering tulip-shaped fountain near the entrance, mosaic tiles and mahogany-paneled walls throughout.

    Black and white photographs from that time give a view into what it was like inside the Tropicana at its height, when it frequently hosted A-list stars in its showroom — from Elizabeth Taylor and Debbie Reynolds to Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.

    Mel Tormé and Eddie Fisher performed at the Tropicana. Gladys Knight and Wayne Newton have held residencies there.

    In a city known for reinvention, the Tropicana itself underwent major changes as Las Vegas evolved. Two hotel towers were added in later years. In 1979, a $1 million green-and-amber stained glass ceiling was installed above the casino floor.

    Barbara Boggess was 26 when she started working at the Tropicana in 1978 as a linen room attendant.

    “The Tropicana was pretty much sitting here all by itself,” Boggess said. “It was desert all around. It used to take me 10 minutes to get to work. Now it takes an hour.”

    Now 72, Boggess has seen the Tropicana through its many iterations. There was the 1980s rebrand as “The Island of Las Vegas,” with a swim-up blackjack table at the pool, and the South Beach-themed renovation completed in 2011.

    Today, only the low-rise hotel room wings remain of the original Tropicana structure. Yet the casino still conjures up vintage Vegas nostalgia.

    “It does give an old Vegas vibe. When you first walk in, you see the stained glass and the low ceilings,” JT Seumala, a Las Vegas resident who visited the casino in March, said. “It does feel like you step back in time for a moment.”

    Seumala and his husband stayed at the Tropicana as a way to pay tribute to the landmark. They roamed the casino floor and hotel, turning down random hallways and exploring the convention center. They tried their luck at blackjack and roulette and made conversation with a cocktail server who had worked there for 25 years. At the end of their stay, they pocketed a few red $5 poker chips to remember the casino.

    Behind the scenes of the casino’s opening decades ago, the Tropicana had ties to organized crime, largely through reputed mobster Frank Costello.

    Weeks after the grand opening, Costello was shot in the head in New York. Police found in his coat pocket a piece of paper with the Tropicana’s exact earnings figure. The note also mentioned “money to be skimmed” for Costello’s associates, according to a post on The Mob Museum’s website looking back on the Tropicana’s history.

    By the 1970s, federal authorities investigating mobsters in Kansas City charged more than a dozen mob operatives with conspiring to skim nearly $2 million in gambling revenue from Las Vegas casinos, including the Tropicana. Charges connected to the Tropicana alone resulted in five convictions.

    But the famed hotel-casino also saw many years of mob-free success. It was home to the city’s longest running show, “Folies Bergere.” The topless revue, imported from Paris, featured what is now one of the most recognizable Las Vegas icons: the feathered showgirl.

    During its nearly 50-year run, “Folies Bergere” featured elaborate costumes and stage sets, original music that at one time was played by a live orchestra, line dancers, magic shows, acrobats and comedy.

    The cabaret was featured in the 1964 Elvis Presley film “Viva Las Vegas.” Magicians Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn got their start in the show.

    Today, the site at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip intersects with a major thoroughfare named for the Tropicana. It is surrounded by the towering megaresorts that Las Vegas is now known for.

    But nearby are the homes of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, who left Oakland, California, in 2020, and the city’s first major league professional team, the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights.

    The ballpark planned for the land beneath the Tropicana is expected to open in 2028.

    “There’s a lot of controversy as far as if it should stay or should it go,” Seumala said. “But the thing that I do love about Vegas is that it’s always reinventing itself.”

    WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg recently talked about Asuka breaking his winning streak during an interview. Goldberg responded to whether WWE’s association with WCW affected his career path by stating that none of that happened until he joined the company in 2016.

    Goldberg returned to WWE in 2016 for a program with Brock Lesnar, which spanned six months until WrestleMania 33. During this period, he cited events such as Asuka breaking his streak and wrestlers performing spears as notable examples.

    During an appearance on Nothing Left Unsaid with Tim Green, Goldberg noted that Asuka’s winning streak was highlighted as the longest at the time, coincidentally ending around the period of his arrival in WWE.

    In the podcast, Goldberg said, “That happened after I got there. A girl beat my undefeated streak. I can’t even remember. Ah-soo-ka [Asuka] is her name. Some Japanese girl. They touted her as being the one to have the longest winning streak. It just so happened that it culminated when I got there. Then, it just so happened that every single wrestler uses the spear in their moves. Pretty ironic that happened when I got there.”

    Fans might remember that 2015 marked the beginning of Asuka’s streak. Coincidentally, a year later, Goldberg made his return. However, by then, Asuka had already surpassed the veteran’s record and gained traction among the fans.

    What were Goldberg and Asuka’s undefeated streak records?

    Goldberg’s WCW run in the late 90s is synonymous with dominance. His winning streak was famously touted as 173-0 during his time in WCW, marking a significant achievement in professional wrestling history. However, the streak included victories from WCW’s dark matches that were not televised. Upon arriving in WWE, it was acknowledged that Kevin Nash had already broken his streak at Starrcade 1998.

    On the other hand, Asuka‘s streak of victories began in September 2015 when she joined NXT. This continued until WrestleMania 34, where she faced Charlotte Flair and suffered her first loss. Asuka’s streak lasted an impressive 914 days, making it one of the longest and most notable undefeated streaks in recent wrestling history.

    Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

    As part of the deal, Prime Hydration will become the exclusive official hydration drink partner of the WWE.

    Prime Hydration will have center mat branding at WWE premium live events including WrestleMania and Money In The Bank. The deal also gives it match sponsorships, co-presenter designations at future premium live events, and social support from WWE personalities.

    The agreement further strengthens Paul’s relationship with TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of WWE. In January 2023, UFC, which is also part of TKO, announced that it struck a multiyear global marketing partnership with Prime, making it the official sports drink of the mixed martial arts organization.

    Paul has also been wrestling for WWE since 2022. Two months ago, the social media personality, who currently holds the WWE’s United States Championship, announced on Instagram that he renewed his contract with the sports entertainment company.

    It is a name that has become almost synonymous with professional wrestling but its bearer, Dwayne Johnson, has never legally owned “The Rock.”

    That will change under a new agreement with the WWE under which Johnson will also join the board of TKO Group, the sports and entertainment company that houses WWE and UFC.

    “The Rock” is a name is derived from Johnson’s father, WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson, who was the first Black champion in WWE history (alongside partner Tony Atlas), according the WWE.

    Johnson, a movie and wrestling star, has a business portfolio that includes production company Seven Bucks Productions, tequila brand Teremana Tequila, energy drink company ZOA Energy, Project Rock apparel brand and the United Football League.

    “I’m very motivated to help continue to globally expand our TKO, WWE, and UFC businesses as the worldwide leaders in sports and entertainment — while proudly representing so many phenomenal athletes and performers who show up every day putting in the hard work with their own two hands to make their dreams come true and deliver for our audiences,” Johnson said in a prepared statement. “I’ve been there, I’m still there and this is for them.”

    TKO Group Holdings Inc. says Johnson’s board appointment, effective Tuesday, reflects its “commitment to delivering long-term value and strong performance for shareholders through strategic growth initiatives across both UFC and WWE.”

    Johnson began his wrestling career with WWE in 1996. The third-generation wrestler became famous for rivalries with wrestlers including “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Triple H and his finishing maneuver, The Rock Bottom, according to his biography on WWE’s website. He has won eight WWE championships, has a New York Times bestselling autobiography, “The Rock Says,” and starred in movies including “Fast X,” “Black Adam,” “Jungle Cruise” and ”Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”

    Johnson has recently appeared on World Wrestling Entertainment Inc.’s “Smackdown” and “Raw” television programs, with rumors swirling that he may compete at this year’s WrestleMania.

    “I am thrilled to partner with Dwayne and welcome his immense talent to TKO’s Board,” TKO CEO Ariel Emanuel said in a prepared statement. “Dwayne brings an incredible track record of creating content and building globally recognized consumer brands, and he will play a key role in realizing our ambitions for TKO.”

    TKO also announced Tuesday that Brad Keywell will become a board member. Keywell has co-founded and led multiple companies, including Groupon, Echo Global Logistics, MediaOcean, and Uptake Technologies, where he is currently founder and executive chairman.

    The additions of Johnson and Keywell will increase TKO’s board from 11 to 13 members.

    Shares of TKO Group surged nearly 10% before the market open.

    NEW YORK — After Donald Trump attended South Carolina’s annual Palmetto Bowl, video of the crowd chanting “We want Trump!” as the former president arrived at Williams-Brice Stadium spread across conservative social media.

    It was much the same two weeks earlier when the GOP front-runner attended an Ultimate Fighting Championship event in New York, fist-bumping and waving to the crowd as he entered Madison Square Garden like he was one of the fighters, with an entourage that included the musician Kid Rock, UFC president Dana White and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

    While Trump has spent less time campaigning in early-voting states than many of his Republican primary rivals, his campaign has been filling his schedule with appearances at major sporting events including Saturday’s UFC fight in Las Vegas. Videos of his appearances routinely rack up hundreds of thousands of views across social media, particularly on non-political outlets, including popular online sports channels and fan sites. And they are far easier and cheaper to produce than campaign rallies.

    It’s a strategy that, aides say, puts him in front of potential voters who may not closely follow politics or engage with traditional news sources. And it is part of a broader effort to expand Trump’s appeal with young people and minority voters, particularly Latino and Black men, that the campaign hopes to win over in greater numbers after gains in 2020. UFC’s fanbase in particular is overwhelmingly male.

    Aides stress Trump is a genuine sports fan who frequented fights and games long before he ran for the White House and would be attending even if he weren’t running. He is a particular aficionado of boxing and other combat sports. During a summer appearance on the “UFC Unfiltered” podcast, Trump recalled his favorite fights from decades ago, blow by blow.

    In the 1980s, he befriended boxing legends like Mike Tyson and promoter Don King as he hosted high-profile fights at his Atlantic City casinos and became so involved with professional wrestling that he starred in WrestleMania 23’s “Battle of the Billionaires.” And for a time, he owned the New Jersey Generals, a professional team that played in the NFL-rival United States Football League.

    In recent years, he has become particularly tied to mixed martial arts and its machismo. He is close personal friends with White, UFC’s founder, who spoke at the Republican National Conventions in 2016 and 2020 and credits Trump for saving the sport by hosting fights when others shunned it as too violent.

    Campaign staff often tune into fights late at night aboard Trump’s private plane as he returns to Palm Beach, Florida, following events, streaming fights on ESPN+ or DAZN.

    Trump has also drawn support from the sport’s stars, including Colby Covington, who will be fighting Leon Edwards Saturday night for UFC’s welterweight title. Covington said this week that organizers overruled his request to have Trump walk him out to the octagon. But Trump may still get a role if he wins.

    “He’s going to wrap that belt around me,” Covington told reporters on Thursday, wearing a suit jacket signed by Trump that featured the former president’s mug shot on the back. “It’s going to be a spectacle.”

    There is of course a long history of sports in presidential politics. Candidates have used them to project an image of strength and vigor, endear themselves to voters and seem more accessible.

    Presidential historian Michael Beschloss wrote about how Theodore Roosevelt was frequently pictured boxing, horseback riding and hiking, while John Kennedy swam, sailed and played touch despite serious injuries sustained during the war. Richard Nixon “went to great lengths” to emphasize his football and baseball fandom as he tried to court working-class voters, while George W. Bush famously threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the first World Series game in New York after 9/11, trying to signal to nervous Americans that life would go on after the terror attack.

    Trump’s team sees the appearances as a way to connect with sports fans, signaling he shares their interests, and a way to showcase a different side of the combative politician, who has been indicted four times and is usually shown on the news railing from behind a rally lectern. They also hope to capitalize on his history as a celebrity and his relationships with business and entertainment figures.

    When Trump attends an event like Saturday’s fight, “The audience gets to see him through an unvarnished filter that isn’t tainted by news media and political biases,” said his spokesman Steven Cheung, who previously worked for UFC himself. “It gives us the great opportunity to connect with voters who are, quite frankly, turned off by many traditional news outlets.”

    Jeffrey Montez de Oca, a professor of sociology and the founding director of the Center for Critical Sport Studies at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, said politicians “use sports all the time and they’re used to connect with regular people,” as well as to “project strength and power.”

    Sports, he said, generate “powerful emotions” that take hold of fans and “make you feel like you’re a part of something much larger than yourself” — emotions that politicians try to harness.

    “For Trump to walk into that space, he’s able to participate in the general feeling going on in that room. The love, the enthusiasm, the feeling of connection with the sport, with the athletes, then attaches to him as well,” he said.

    Kyle Kusz, a University of Rhode Island professor who studies the connection between sports and the far right, recalled how Trump aligned himself with sports figures during his 2016 campaign, appearing with basketball coach Bobby Knight, who was fired for abusive behavior, and invoking Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who was fired in connection with the child sex abuse scandal involving his former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, among others facing scandal. He noted all were white men whose diehard fans saw them as unfairly victimized.

    Sports stars in 2016 were among the few celebrities willing to campaign with Trump, who was shunned by the Hollywood establishment.

    This time, Trump’s appearances are part of a broader effort by the former president’s team to engage with non-traditional media outlets, including YouTube shows and podcasts like “UFC Unfiltered” that can drive millions of views. The appearances allow Trump to reach listeners who may be turned off by the mainstream media and politics, and get their news from alternative sources.

    They have also tried to harness the power of social media by creating their own viral moments. His team realized early on that video of Trump interacting with supporters had particular traction, and now often organizes stops where he has passed out Blizzards at Dairy Queen or tossed autographed footballs into the crowd at a frat house in Iowa.

    The scenes have also provided a contrast, first with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, once seen as Trump’s leading primary rival, who is often criticized for seeming wooden and awkward at public events, and now with President Joe Biden as both men gear up for a widely expected general election rematch. Biden has largely eschewed campaign events, holding just a single rally, his campaign launch event.

    World Wrestling Entertainment star Bray Wyatt died Thursday, WWE announced. He was 36.

    Wyatt, whose real name was Windham Rotunda, died “unexpectedly,” according to an article on the WWE website that did not mention a cause of death.

    “WWE is saddened to learn that Windham Rotunda, also known as Bray Wyatt, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 24, at age 36,” WWE said. “WWE extends its condolences to Rotunda’s family, friends and fans.”

    Wyatt, the 2017 WWE champion, was also known as “The Fiend.” His last televised performance came at the 2023 Royal Rumble.

    “Known for his captivating performances and incredible in-ring presence, Wyatt was a defining superstar of his generation,” WWE said.

    Wyatt was the son of Mike and Stephanie Rotunda.

    Wyatt’s grandfather Robert Deroy Windham (Blackjack Mulligan), father, and two of his uncles (Barry and Kendall Windham) all wrestled in WWE. His grandfather also played college at UTEP and saw preseason action for the New York Jets.

    Wyatt redshirted on the Troy team in 2007.

    The image was used in a promotional package for the match between Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio on a preview show on April 1.

    “We had no knowledge of what was depicted. As soon as we learned, it was removed immediately. We apologize for this error,” the WWE said in a statement.

    The storyline between father and son included Dominik Mysterio going to jail after being involved in an incident with his father during Christmas. The image of Auschwitz appeared as Dominik said in the promo “You think this is a game to me? I served hard time. And I survived.”

    The photo from the concentration camp in Oświęcim, Poland, where 1.1 million people were murdered by the Nazis during World War II, was replaced by stock footage of barbed wire and an empty jail cell in the promo before the match and in replays.

    Some wrestling fans noticed the use of the Auschwitz photo. It drew more attention after the Auschwitz Memorial museum posted on Twitter on Wednesday that using the image “is hard to call an editing mistake.”

    “Exploiting the site that became a symbol of enormous human tragedy is shameless and insults the memory of all victims of Auschwitz,” the memorial said in a statement.

    Rey Mysterio, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame last week, defeated his son in the match.

    WrestleMania 39 at SoFi Stadium drew 161,892 and set stadium single-day records on both nights. It also was the most-streamed event on Peacock since last year’s Super Bowl.

    The two-night show also came on the eve of the McMahon family agreeing to a merger with the company that runs Ultimate Fighting Championship.

    On Monday morning, Endeavor and WWE announced plans to create a $21.4 billion sports entertainment company.

    INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Leave it to Snoop Dogg to emerge as the Most Valuable Performer of WrestleMania 39.

    During a weekend that saw World Wrestling Entertainment set a two-night attendance record for their signature event, the company on the verge of being sold and Roman Reigns remaining the undisputed champion, the iconic rapper stepped up in an emergency.

    Snoop Dogg was co-hosting a segment between matches on Sunday at SoFi Stadium with wrestler Mike “The Miz” Mizanin when he goaded Mizanin into an impromptu match with Shane McMahon, who made his appearance at a WWE event for the first time in 14 months. McMahon and Mizanin traded punches before McMahon tore his quad when he did a leapfrog maneuver while trying to avoid Mizanin.

    Doctors checked on McMahon before he was helped out of the ring. Snoop Dogg then came back into the ring to continue the match, as he punched “The Miz” twice, then stole a page from “The Rock” and landed a people’s elbow to secure the win.

    “My hat’s off to Snoop, just picking it up and like, ‘oh man, he’s hurt? That’s alright, I’ll fix that.’ Just a natural born entertainer,” said WWE head of creative Paul “Triple H” Levesque. “I’ve known Snoop for years in this environment and what kind of a fan he is, but tonight he put himself on a different playing field and respect factor for me. I know a lot of guys that have been in business a long time; if that happened, they’d go, ‘what do we do?’ It was amazing.”

    The biggest surprise, though, happened less than eight hours after Reigns pinned Cody Rhodes in the main event when UFC owner Endeavor announced Monday morning it had signed an agreement with WWE to form a new company that will put UFC and WWE under one roof.

    Levesque did not answer questions about Endeavor Sunday night, saying he wanted to focus on what happened over the weekend.

    Outside the ring, attendance for both days was 161,892 and set stadium single-day records on both nights. The first WrestleMania in Los Angeles since 2005 generated a record gate of $21.6 million, breaking the previous record by 27%.

    Sponsorship revenue eclipsed $21 million, more than doubling the previous record, while merchandise sales were up 20% over last year.

    The Doggfather stepping in as a pinch wrestler continued the trend of celebrities coming in and not looking out of place.

    Social media star Logan Paul participated in a WrestleMania match for the second straight year on Saturday. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle came out of the stands and was part of a match between former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee and “The Miz.” Rapper Bad Bunny made a cameo during the match between the Mysterios.

    “They have no right to be this good,” Levesque said of the celebrities stepping into the ring. “What’s awesome about it is the grind and the level of what they’re willing to put into this because they respect the business, respect for the WWE superstars and what we do and the people that came before them. It’s cool to see them do that, but also awe-inspiring to see how good they are at it and how it raises the bar for everyone else.”

    Besides co-hosting with “The Miz” both nights, Snoop drove Rey Mysterio out to the stage in a lowrider before his match against son Dominik Mysterio.

    Paul, who lost to Seth Rollins, did high-flying stunts and moves as if he had performed for more than 10 years. McAfee was a WWE announcer for 17 months (April 2021-September 2022) and participated in a match at last year’s WrestleMania, while Kittle has been a long-time wrestling fan.

    Bad Bunny, who took part in a tag team match at WrestleMania two years ago, will host WWE’s next premium live event on May 6, which will take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is the first time since 2005 that WWE is going to Puerto Rico.

    Bad Bunny could also take part in a match that night. On Saturday, he was doing commentary in Spanish during Mysterio’s match when he stopped Dominik from using a steel chain he would hit his father with. Rey Mysterio capitalized on the distraction and would hit his finishing move to get the win and set up a possible storyline between Bad Bunny and the younger Mysterio.

    Reigns continuing his 900-day-plus reign as champion was mostly unexpected. Rhodes had all the momentum going into the match, and all indications pointed to a title change. Still, WWE’s creative forces have decided to continue Reigns’ dominance atop the company.

    Barring injury or a giant surprise, Reigns will become the first WWE wrestler to reach 1,000 days as champion in early June. At this point, Reigns will likely keep the title through Summerslam in early August in Detroit, or he could still be the champion by next year’s WrestleMania in Philadelphia.

    “I want somebody to step up and take this ball from us,” Reigns said. “Because if you don’t, we’re just going to keep a chokehold on this.”

    NEW YORK (AP) — WWE’s WrestleMania, the Super Bowl for the sports entertainment company, arrives this weekend to a massive audience and vastly larger sponsorship revenue as it seeks to establish itself as a serious contender for major dollars from such partnerships.

    Craig Stimmel, WWE’s senior vice president and head of global sales and partnerships, told The Associated Press in an interview that sponsorship revenue for this year’s event has doubled to more than $20 million, a record for any WWE event.

    Those numbers are critical in light of the return in January of Vince McMahon, the founder and majority shareholder of WWE, who said the sports entertainment company could be up for sale.

    There are numerous rumors circulating about who might be willing to buy WWE and for how much, and it’s unknown if anyone has stepped forward with a bid yet. But the company’s broadening presence everywhere from TikTok to streaming channels could lift its asking price.

    Marketing experts see WWE as a prime venue for brands due to the makeup of its core audience. That audience ranges from minors to seniors, has a wide range of incomes, it’s global, and it’s fervently devoted to the craft, said T. Maxwell, a partner at Max Sports Marketing.

    “WWE fans are fiercely loyal and dedicated, they are hooked, they crave storytelling and will be WWE fans for life,” Maxwell said. “This creates an amazing opportunity for savvy brands to connect with a unique audience for life.”

    The company, based in Stamford, Connecticut, is increasingly leaning into its marketing potential and finding new ways to resonate with fans and sponsors.

    For the first time at a premium live event in January, WWE incorporated a single company’s branding (Mountain Dew) on the ring canvas, in post-show press conferences and elsewhere. WWE also played off the product the company was introducing to consumers, a drink called “Pitch Black.” The match was held in the dark, in a ring with fluorescent ring ropes and gear.

    During last year’s WrestleMania, wrestlers Shinsuke Nakamura and Rick Boogs incorporated the colors used by Mike’s Hard Lemonade to launch a new drink into the gear they wore in the ring.

    Stimmel said WWE will incorporate corporate brands into this year’s WrestleMania in a multitude of ways, including a match sponsorship, a “blurring of the fourth wall” between what home viewers see vs. what live audience members observe and an augmented reality experience.

    “We try to find the perfect marriage of brand and story,” Stimmel said.

    WrestleMania 39, a two-day event that begins Saturday at SoFi Stadium outside of Los Angeles, has 12 sponsors, half of them returning from last year’s event.

    While there has been pushback by fans in some sports leagues that have tried to introduce more advertising, it does not appear to be an issue for WWE.

    “I think WWE fans are much more accepting of (sponsors) than the traditional sports,” Maxwell said.

    Sponsors are keen to take advantage of WWE’s push into social media as the company pursues a multifaceted online effort to reach viewers on YouTube, TikTok and elsewhere.

    The company surpassed 16 billion social video views in the final quarter of last year. It has nearly 94 million YouTube subscribers and has more than 20 million followers on TikTok. Its female wrestlers comprise five out of the top 15 most followed female athletes in the world, across Facebook, Twitter & Instagram, led by Ronda Rousey with 36.1 million followers.

    WWE had more than 7.5 billion digital and social media views in January and February of this year, up 15% from the same time frame a year ago.

    The size of the net that WWE is throwing out to capture viewers has been noticed by retail analysts.

    “WWE has multiple channels to connect with customers which is important for sponsors who don’t want to rely on just one medium,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData. “It basically gives brands multiple bites of the cherry to reach customers. WWE has built out an entire entertainment ecosystem which brands can tap into and use to push their marketing messages.”

    Even the timing of WrestleMania in early April, which falls between the end of the National Football League season and early days of the Major League Baseball season, puts WWE in a position to capture more sponsors.

    “WrestleMania is our Super Bowl,” said Stimmel.

Per an October 2022 study by Betting.com, pro wrestling is the top sport on Cameo according to earnings, with WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley occupying the the top spot as Cameo’s highest-earning athlete overall.

    Foley, Bret Hart (No. 4), Matt Hardy (9) and Danhausen (10) all ranked inside the Top 10 for Cameo’s highest-earning athletes. All told, pro wrestling raked in $1.251,033 in estimated total earnings, outpacing NFL, baseball, body building and football.

    Though he’s been largely retired since 2010—his last credited match was a cameo appearance at the 2012 Royal Rumble (no pun intended)—Mick Foley’s connection to wrestling’s intensely loyal fanbase remains strong.

Have a Nice Day was the catalyst for additional WWE Superstars to pen their own autobiographies during the Attitude Era. Unlike his successors, however, Have a Nice Day was written entirely by Foley himself. Foley went on to write three more books Foley is Good: And The Real World is Faker Than Wrestling, The Hardcore Diaries and Countdown to Lockdown: A Hardcore Journal.

    Foley has leveraged his lovable, approachable demeanor to strengthen his relationship with fans through additional revealing projects such as the 2017 reality show Holy Foley and WWE Network’s first stand-up comedy special 20 Years of Hell.

    The Hardcore Legend is the top star on Cameo, with almost $500,000 in total earnings according to the 2022 study. This is more than double the No. 2 wrestler Bret Hart who, similar to Foley, has remained transparent with his fanbase about every aspect of his legendary career. Prior to Foley, Hart penned his own autobiography Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling alongside Marcy Engelstein.

    Matt Hardy, Danhausen and Diamond Dallas Page, who round out the Top 5, have all successfully transcended their wrestling careers through social media in different ways. Hardy, one of the pioneers of wrestlers using social media, continues to produce content through his MATTHARDYBRAND YouTube channel, including his current podcast “The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy.”

    Danhausen is a fixture at wrestling conventions, where he has built a cult following big enough to earn him a contract with AEW. Diamond Dallas Page has built a yoga empire with DDP Yoga, all while giving back to the community by working with troubled wrestlers through the Accountability Crib. Jake “The Snake” Roberts and the late Scott Hall were two of Page’s most prominent clients.

    Wrestling is the Highest-Earning Sport on Cameo

    In addition to wrestlers making up for almost half of the Top 10 highest-earning athletes on Cameo, pro wrestling is the most requested sport on the app in almost every metric. Wrestlers have garnered over 15,000 reviews while earning close to $1.3 million in total earnings. Wrestlers also make over $35,000 in average estimated earnings, more than NFL, baseball, body building and football (soccer).

    Pro wrestling is unique in that fans follow a wrestler’s character arc in real time through a live, yearslong journey. Those who make it as top stars, let alone prominent characters, are able to develop a stronger relationship with these passionate fans as they follow their favorite stars through their evolution. This connection lasts long after they retire, and as suggested by Cameo, it only grows stronger post-retirement among wrestling’s nostalgic fanbase.
