This is when Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson got divorced

ROYAL weddings always capture the attention of the world, and the marriage of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson was no different.

However, what started out as a fairy tale romance ended in divorce not long after.

When did Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson divorce?

Sarah Ferguson married Prince Andrew on July 23, 1986, in a Westminster Abbey ceremony.

At the time of their wedding, Prince Andrew was fourth in line to the throne.

The Queen gave the happy couple her permission to marry in Westminster Abbey and appointed them the Duke and Duchess of York.

During their 10-year marriage, they had two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Eugenie.

Eldest daughter Beatrice Elizabeth Mary was born on August 8, 1988, with the happy news being announced by Buckingham Palace.

It read: “Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York was safely delivered of a daughter at 8:18 p.m. today.”

Second daughter Eugenie Victoria Helena followed on March 23, 1990.

But in 1996, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson divorced after 10 years of marriage.

While the exact reason behind the break-up remains unknown, they announced their “amicable split” in 1992.

However, Sarah’s biographer says that Prince Andrew’s naval duties put a strain on the marriage as he was often travelling.

Just a few months after their split, Sarah was photographed with her financial adviser John Bryan.

Sarah’s open relationship with the media is rumoured to have put a strain on her relationship with the Palace

Are Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson friends?

The former couple remain on good terms and even share a house together.

Even though Sarah and Prince separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996 they continue to live at Royal Lodge in Windsor together.

Their close friendship and living situation has meant the former couple have often been plagued by rumours that they will one day reunite romantically – something Sarah appears to have not ruled out.

“All I can say is that we’re happy with the way we are right now,” she teased when quizzed about their relationship in an interview with The Telegraph.

“We always say we are the most contented divorced couple in the world. We’re divorced to each other, not from each other,” she added.

“We are co-parents who support each other and believe that family is everything. I’m proud of the job we have done together in bringing up our children and sustaining a strong family unit. Our bywords are communication, compromise and compassion.”

Both of their children are all grown up now, and have kids of their own.

Youngest daughter, Princess Eugenie got married to Jack Brooksbank in a joyful wedding that captured the attention of royal watchers in 2018.

Her older sister Princess Beatrice married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in a downsized July wedding during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

The two princesses have made their parents grandparents.

Eugenie and Jack had their first child, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, on February 9, 2021.

The choice of Philip as a middle name pays tribute to Eugenie’s grandfather Prince Philip.

The happy couple then welcomed their second child in May 30, 2023.

They called him Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, revealing their son’s name was inspired by “his great-great grandfather George, his grandpa George and my grandpa Ronald”.

Beatrice gave birth to daughter Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi on September 18 , 2021.

Sisters Eugenie and Beatrice are famously tight and have often attended royal events together over the years.

As of November 2023, Beatrice is ninth in line to the throne, with her daughter, Sienna, tenth.

Eugenie is 11th in line, with August 12th and Ernest 13th.

Princess Eugenie Shares The First Family Photo Featuring Her Son Ernest

On Thursday, Princess Eugenie celebrated her fifth anniversary with Jack Brooksbank with a video that featured a few never-before-seen shots from their 2018 wedding. It’s soundtracked by the song “You’ve Got the Love” by Florence and the Machine, and tucked at the end of the video was the first photo showing Jack and Eugenie with their two sons, two-year-old August and four-month-old Ernest.

Eugenie and Jack were married at St. George Chapel in Windsor, and the video Eugenie posted to social media shows the couple kissing on the steps along with a clip of royal standard flying above, which indicated that Eugenie’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth was among the ceremony’s attendees. It also shows a few never-before-seen details from the day, like the finishing touches on Eugenie’s Ralph Lauren dress, Jack preparing for the big day with friends, and a disco ball that was hung from the tree. Also spotted in the video are Eugenie’s mother, Sarah Ferguson, and sister, Princess Beatrice, but there is no footage of her father, Prince Andrew.

The couple was recently in the news after Portuguese tabloid Nova Gente reported that Eugenie’s cousin Prince Harry brought his wife Meghan Markle to visit them in Lisbon. The family is currently splitting their time between London and Portugal due to Jack’s role in marketing with a local resort, though he used to work for George Clooney–founded tequila company Casamigos. In the final photo, taken in front of a blue sea, Eugenie is wearing a hat that features the brand’s distinctive turquoise starburst logo.

In June, Eugenie used her Instagram account to announce the arrival of Ernest, sharing that his name was inspired by a family member. It took a few weeks for her mother to clarify that it was taken from the middle name of Eugenie’s great-great-great grandfather George V.

  • Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Reportedly Took a Personal Side Trip to Portugal After Invictus Games

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Reportedly Took a Personal Side Trip to Portugal After Invictus Games

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle participated in the time-honored tradition of bleisure—the combination of traveling for business and leisure, that is—and reportedly popped over to Portugal for a few days after the close of this year’s Invictus Games.

Local outlet Nova Gente first reported the royals’ three-day jaunt, tacked onto the end of their duties at the games, which Harry co-founded to honor wounded and ill veterans and active military personnel and give a chance to compete in various sporting events. According to translation from Page Six, Harry and Meghan jetted from Dusseldorf to Lisbon, Portugal on September 16, then headed to CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club in what Nova Gente called a “mega-secret operation.” (Vanity Fair has reached out to reps for the Sussexes for comment.)

During their reported three-day stay, the Sussexes spent time with Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank. Brooksbank works at the resort in a marketing and sales role, and he and Eugenie, along with their two sons, typically split their time between Portugal and London.

An unnamed “insider” told the local outlet that “the choice of this location would have been related to a possible invitation from Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie who, since the start of last year, has been spending a lot of time in this part of the Alentejo because of her husband’s work.”

Since resigning their roles as working senior royals in a shock move in 2020, Harry and Meghan’s relationship with much of the royal family has been strained, to say the least: Harry observed the first anniversary of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s passing alone recently, and he attended father King Charles III’s coronation, but didn’t participate in the ceremonial festivities and swiftly exited the U.K. after. Markle did not attend, despite wig-related theories to the contrary. The Sussex’s relationship with Eugenie and her family, however, remains close. She has supported the couple personally and professionally after their exit, participating in their Archewell Foundation charity, and has hung out with them many times, including attending the Super Bowl with Harry last year. (Brooksbanks and Markle stayed behind in Montecito for that one.) She was also reportedly one of the first members of the royal family to be told when Meghan and Harry started dating in 2016.

  • Sarah Ferguson Shares The Most Important Etiquette Lesson She Taught Her Daughters

Sarah Ferguson Shares The Most Important Etiquette Lesson She Taught Her Daughters

Though Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, was technically never a princess herself, she is the mother of both Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie and spent years attending the types of engagements and banquets where a senior royal must be on their best behavior. On this week’s episode of Tea Talks With The Duchess & Sarah, the podcast she cohosts with entrepreneur Sarah Thomson, she shared a few of the tips for etiquette she learned during her time in the royal family.

“I always say to my girls, when you’re out on the public stage, smile. If you don’t want to be polite, don’t go out on the public stage—because no one wants to see a grumpy princess,” Ferguson said, per People. “I think the most important thing is you’ve got to get your game on.”

Though Beatrice and Eugenie are not working royals, they have made public appearances at family events, like Trooping the Colour and royal weddings for most of their lives, and also have taken on a few patronages that are close to their hearts. Despite Ferguson’s 1996 divorce from their father, Prince Andrew, the family has remained close, and in the late 1990s, Ferguson would stay at another home on the Sandringham Estate over the Christmas holidays so her daughters could still participate in the festivities.

Even after leaving behind her official royal duties, Ferguson still had plenty of reason to rely on some of her royal skills to make a good impression at parties. She told Thomson one of her best tricks for moving around a party while still seeming polite.

“It depends [on] which country you’re in. There’s all different cultures, which you must always be aware of, and I love that,” she explained. “If you’re in British Downton Abbey, you get to a point when you say, ‘One second, could you hold that thought because I’ve just got to go and see Fred over there because I’ve got to give him a message.’ And by the time that the person you’re talking to has gone onto the next subject, they’ve forgotten that you were coming back to tell something about Fred.”

She also explained her clever strategy for attending multiple parties in one night. “What you do is you walk through the door, go in very loudly and walk all the way around the room, she said. “You’ll be so loud that most people are going, ‘Oh my goodness, it’s so loud.’ Then you leave after five minutes, and so the host and everyone will say, “Oh, I didn’t see Sarah tonight.’ And everyone in the room says, “Oh, well we did.’”

Ferguson and Thomson have cohosted the podcast since April, and in their weekly episodes they discuss their careers and personal lives, along with culture and current events. Earlier this month, a spokesperson Ferguson announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was recovering after a lengthy operation. On the next day, the pair released a pre-recorded episode of the show where Ferguson explained that she was diagnosed during a routine mammogram that she nearly skipped.

“It’s very important that I speak about it,” she said in the episode. “I am telling people out there because I want every single person that is listening to this podcast to go get checked, go get screened and go do it.”

  • Why Did Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank Name Their Son Ernest?

Why Did Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank Name Their Son Ernest?

Earlier this month, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank announced the birth of their second son, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank on Instagram, and in her post, Eugenie explained the family homages behind his name. “He is named after his great great great Grandfather George, his Grandpa George and my Grandpa Ronald,” she wrote. It was fairly easy to understand the inspiration behind at least two of those names. Jack’s father, George Brooksbank, died last year, and Ronnie Ferguson, the father of Sarah Ferguson and a longtime polo manager for the royal family, died in 2003. Then, of course, Ernest’s great-great-great grandfather was King George V, who reigned from 1910 to 1936.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

It left commenters with some confusion—where were we getting the name Ernest from in all of that? Last week, Sarah cleared it up on her new podcast, Tea Talks with the Duchess & Sarah. During a conversation with her co-host, she explained that Eugenie actually drew inspiration from George V’s full name, George Frederick Ernest Albert.

“He’s done very, very well. He’s called Ernest George Ronnie,” she said to her cohost Sarah Thomson. “He’s Ernest because George the third [great-grandfather]’s middle name was Ernest, and also because it’s a fabulous name. And then George after Jack’s father and Ronald, Ronnie, after my father, which was really touching. When Jack and Eugenie told me, it was so moving that they put my dad in there. It was very kind, I thought—made me cry, of course.”

It’s not the first time that the couple has taken a roundabout approach to family homage. When Eugenie announced the birth of August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, her first son with husband Jack Brooksbank, back in February 2021, it was obvious who she was inspired by for his middle name. Her grandfather Prince Philip was ailing, and in only two months, he would die at the age of 99.

For the names August and Hawke, she was fairly cryptic, but she gave some clues that showed how interested she is in family ancestry. “He is named after his great-grandfather and both of his great x5 grandfathers,” she wrote in an Instagram story. She was referring to Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert, whose full name was Franz August Karl Albert Emanuel. Hawke came from one of Jack’s ancestors, Reverend Edward Hawke Brooksbank, who lived in Healaugh, a small Yorkshire village.

Though they are both technically family names, both August and Ernest are somewhat unexpected in the context of Windsor history, so it makes sense that they also chose Ernest because it is a “fabulous” name, as Sarah mentioned. That said, a few different men named Ernest have played a role in the family’s modern history. George V, born in 1865, was himself likely named after Prince Albert’s father, Ernest I, sovereign Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in Germany, or Albert’s brother, Ernest II. There’s also the Duke of Cumberland, Prince Ernest Augustus, a son of George III who became a military hero and Tory politician in the 19th century.

In this way, Eugenie and Jack are more like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who chose names with personal significance and a somewhat attenuated connection to the family, as opposed to Prince William and Princess Kate, who gave their children more direct family names. For Archie Harrison, Meghan and Harry were inspired by arche, a Greek word that means “source of action,” and Harrison means, well, Harry’s son. Their daughter Lilibet Diana was named after her late grandmother and Queen Elizabeth II’s childhood nickname.

  • Princess Eugenie Welcomes Second Child, Buckingham Palace Says

Princess Eugenie Welcomes Second Child, Buckingham Palace Says

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank are “delighted to announce” that they have welcomed their second child, Buckingham Palace said in a release on Monday.

“Jack and I wanted to share the news that we had our little boy, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank on 30th May 2023 at 8.49 weighing 7.1lbs,” the royal wrote in a separate Instagram announcement on Monday, which coincided with the palace’s statement.

She also revealed the special meaning behind her newborn’s first and middle names.

“He is named after his great great great Grandfather George, his Grandpa George and my Grandpa Ronald,” Eugenie added, alongside a photo of her newborn and one of her eldest child, a son named August, looking at his new baby brother.

“Augie is loving being a big brother already,” she added.

She also explained the inspiration for August’s name in an Instagram post at the time, telling followers that he was “named after his great grandfather and both of his great x5 grandfathers.”

  • Princess Eugenie Shares Behind-The-Scenes Pictures From Her Coronation Weekend

Princess Eugenie Shares Behind-The-Scenes Pictures From Her Coronation Weekend

Though Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are not working royals, they both occasionally step in to show their support for the monarchy, and that has not changed in the reign of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. On Saturday, they were two of the standout attendees at the Westminster Abbey coronation ceremony, arriving with and sitting next to Prince Harry in the third row, along with Beatrice’s husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Eugenie’s husband Jack Brooksbank. The sisters continued the celebration on Sunday, when they both made an appearance at a Big Coronation Lunch at a village green in Buckinghamshire before heading to the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle in the evening.

In an Instagram post, Eugenie shared a few pictures from the day that show the expectant mother in a black-and-white dress from Gabriella Hearst. In the caption, she wrote about her motivations for attending. “Beatrice and I had so much fun in Chalfont St. Giles for their Coronation Big Lunch. It was amazing to see so many people celebrating and we are very grateful to have spent some time with children, fluffy puppies and so many well-wishers for the king and queen,” she said. “The concert was such a special way to end the day. What a beautiful way to honor the King’s life of service. Of course, my favorite part was seeing the big whale lit up in the sky.”

Eugenie’s Instagram post shared some of her private photos from the day, including one where the two sisters posed with their mother, Sarah Ferguson. Though Sarah wasn’t invited to the Westminster Abbey service on Saturday, she did snag an invite to sit in the royal box during Sunday’s concert. She was photographed sitting next to her ex-husband Prince Andrew, both wearing reading glasses.

Eugenie has a son, August Brooksbank, and Beatrice has a daughter, Sienna, though both were not in attendance for the Sunday concert. In January, Buckingham Palace announced that Eugenie and Jack were expecting their second child sometime this summer.
