A man is in custody following the shooting death of a woman late Friday afternoon in what police believe was a domestic violence-related dispute near the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Annandale, Virginia.

A man is in custody following the shooting death of a woman late Friday afternoon in what police believe was a domestic violence-related dispute near the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Annandale, Virginia.

Fairfax County police responded to the 3200 block of Woodburn Road around 4:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from a woman, believed to have been the victim.

The woman reported that she was inside her vehicle and her ex-boyfriend — whom she had a restraining order against — was blocking her car outside of her place of work so that she couldn’t leave, police said.

While police were en route, “during a conversation with dispatch, it was updated that the man had shot her,” Fairfax County Police Lt. James Curry said at a news conference.

The victim was still on the phone with the 911 dispatcher when the shooting occurred. Curry said the suspect, Tylan Jennings, had fled in his vehicle — a white SUV — before police arrived.

Officers attempted lifesaving measures on the woman, who was transported to the hospital where she later died. The victim has not been identified at this time pending family notification.

“The victim did nothing wrong,” Curry said. “This is a sad, tragic case.”

Utilizing license plate readers, Fairfax County police were able to determine that the suspect had fled toward Maryland, where Prince George’s County police later located and took him into custody. A firearm was found in his vehicle.

Both the victim and the suspect live in Maryland.

“We have domestic violence detectives dedicated to these type of investigations in Fairfax County to provide resources for those community members … and many, many jurisdictions throughout the National Capital Region have those resources in place,” Curry said.

    The investigation is ongoing.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murder in connection with a shootout in Prince George’s County, Maryland, last month that left a 2-year-old boy dead, police said Wednesday.

The teen, from Beltsville, is now the sixth person charged with murder in the toddler’s death.

The shooting happened the night of Feb. 8 in the 1400 block of Kanawha Street in Langley Park. According to police, two groups exchanged gunfire, striking 2-year-old Jeremy Poou-Caceres and his 17-year-old mother, who were walking nearby. The toddler’s mother survived.

Following their decision to deny juvenile detention for two other teens charged in the case, Prince George’s County prosecutors said the shooting may have been tied to gang activity.

The 17-year-old is being held in Prince George’s County without bond.

  • Prince George’s Co. sheriff’s deputy convicted of rape after it was caught on tape – WTOP News

Prince George’s Co. sheriff’s deputy convicted of rape after it was caught on tape – WTOP News

    [ad_1]

A Prince George’s County, Maryland, sheriff’s deputy was convicted Friday of raping his ex-girlfriend, following a trial in which a key piece of evidence heard against him was heard by the jury and everyone else in the courtroom.

A Prince George’s County, Maryland, sheriff’s deputy was convicted Friday of raping his ex-girlfriend, following a trial in which a key piece of evidence heard against him was heard by the jury and everyone else in the courtroom.

The conviction of 37-year-old Brandon Burroughs was announced on Friday, after the culmination of a four-day trial. He is a 10-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and had achieved the rank of corporal.

Burroughs had been charged with second-degree rape and second-degree assault in December 2022.

Sheriff John Carr said administrative proceedings continued parallel to the criminal trial, and his case is due to go to the county’s Police Accountability Board soon.

“It was a … rape in her home after a relationship had already been concluded,” said assistant state’s attorney Chanel Jackson, who prosecuted the case. “The survivor had decided she no longer wanted to be in relationship with the defendant. He did not like that, and thus tried to force himself on her multiple times. And unfortunately in his last attempt, he sexually assaulted her.”

Prosecutors said Burroughs told police that the victim was mad at him because she was “a sidepiece and wants to be with me.” However the rape, which occurred in October 2022, was captured by recording equipment inside the victim’s home.

“We had an audio recording. Unfortunately, our survivor was a very unlucky person to have to have recorded her sexual assault without knowing that was what was going to happen,” said Jackson. “In her home, she has recordings. And so the recording picked up a sexual assault. And we were able to present that before the jury, where it wasn’t just her word against the defendant, it was a recording of what she had to endure in her own home.”

The victim, who spent more than a day on the witness stand testifying, also had to listen to the audio of her attack while in court. During the assault, a 1-year-old child the two had together was also in the home.

“We’re talking about violations of an individual — of a body of an individual in the worst possible way,” said Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy. “You’re trying to take something away from someone, and that something is their dignity. When you rape someone, you’re trying to take away their dignity.”

Carr said that the sheriff’s office takes these types of allegations seriously.

“We want to make sure that our community understands that we take every allegation of misconduct and that we are true in our service to make Prince George’s County a better county,” Carr said. “Once we were made aware, through our process, our internal affairs division actually referred this case over, and as they referred this case over, were able to work with the state’s attorney and the Prince George’s County police to follow these charges through.”

Carr said the department is moving forward according to the Police Accountability Act of 2021 to address Burroughs’ employment.

“But our first and foremost concern is dealing with one, our survivor of this incident; and two our community to let them know that nobody wearing a uniform is above the law, that we are here to serve you,” Carr said.

Two Maryland teenagers have been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of a toddler in the Langley Park neighborhood of Prince George’s County earlier this month, police announced Friday.

Two Maryland teenagers have been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of a toddler in the Langley Park neighborhood of Prince George’s County earlier this month.

A 15-year-old boy from Takoma Park and a 16-year-old boy from Hyattsville are charged as adults with first- and second-degree murder in the case, police said Friday.

Prince George’s County police said two groups exchanged gunfire outside an apartment complex the night of Feb. 8. A 2-year-old boy, Jeremy Poou-Caceres, and his 17-year-old mother were walking nearby and struck by stray bullets. Both were taken to the hospital, where the toddler later died.

Police arrested two other men last week in connection with the toddler’s killing. Johnny Alejandro Turcios, 28, and Israel Fuentes Jr., 33, both face murder charges and are being held without bond.

The two teenagers, who are now in custody, were part of a group separate from Turcios and Fuentes, police said.

Earlier this week, investigators also released video of two other “persons of interest” in the case. Police are still searching for those individuals. A reward of up to $25,000 is available for information leading to arrests and indictments in the case.

  • His drug dealer was in a wheelchair. He was just convicted of robbing and killing him – WTOP News

His drug dealer was in a wheelchair. He was just convicted of robbing and killing him – WTOP News

A New Carrollton teenager was found guilty of murder this week in connection with the death of a man in a wheelchair who was making a marijuana delivery for a friend.

A New Carrollton, Maryland, teenager was found guilty of murder and a long list of other charges this week in connection with the death of a man in a wheelchair who was making a marijuana delivery for a friend.

It happened July 1 outside of apartments along Good Luck Road in Lanham, not far from Duval High School. It was the same day recreational cannabis became legal in Maryland, and retail stores could begin selling. But prosecutors said 19-year-old Dane Gayle and some other friends didn’t have the money to buy any — even illegally. So, prosecutors said, they called up a dealer they knew with the intention of robbing him.

But making the delivery instead was a man named Malcolm Bradley, who was friends with the dealer and who used a wheelchair at the time. Bradley showed up that day with his girlfriend and two kids in the car with him.

“He just thought he was going to make a simple marijuana transaction and go back home,” said assistant state’s attorney Bill Porter. “But it took Dane Gayle four seconds to meet him. And in that four seconds, Dane Gayle pulled out a gun and he shot this individual 11 times and made 23 holes in his body. And you could see that he shot the person in his back as the person was turning away from Dane Gayle.”

Porter said surveillance video from the apartment showed that this was not a case of self-defense, which is what Gayle tried to argue.

“What was striking in that surveillance was that there was not just that marijuana dealer there. But in the Carleton Apartments, there were families, there were babies, there were children just walking back and forth. And they knew nothing about what was getting ready to take place,” Porter said. “And at that moment … they turned that apartment complex into a war zone with all these families just walking around.”

Porter said prosecutors were able to zoom in on the footage, which clearly shows “Dane Gayle literally turn around, pull out a gun and just start blasting.”

State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy said Gayle and others were part of a street crew that committed crimes in that area.

“It is a message to them,” Braveboy said, “that we are not accepting your behavior, that we have intelligence on the ground, that the police are making arrests and we are prosecuting you and we are getting convictions and really stiff sentences.”

Bradley’s mother, Edith, also spoke during a virtual news conference.

“I learned I have to forgive those young men,” she said. “If not, God won’t allow me to continue to live my life … I just don’t know what else — I don’t know how much more my heart can take this.”

Gayle will be sentenced at the end of May.

A 3-year-old boy is dead and his mother was injured after a Thursday night shooting outside an apartment complex in the Langley Park neighborhood of Maryland.

Authorities said it happened in the 1400 block of Kanawha Street around 5:30 p.m.

A detective working in the area responded to the scene after hearing gunshots, officials said. That’s when they found the child and young mother.

The mother was taken to a D.C. hospital. The 3-year-old was taken to Children’s National Hospital, where he later died.

At a news conference, Prince George’s County Deputy Chief Barry Stanton called the shooting a “senseless act of violence that no community should accept, ever.”

“This is trauma not only to the family but in the community,” he said, vowing to “do all we can to get the perpetrators of this senseless act of violence.”

The mother of the child is in stable condition, according to Assistant Police Chief Vernon Hale III, who urged anyone with information about the suspects to come forward.

He said the child did not deserve to die “because someone wants to come out here and play with guns.”

“I can only pray that they weren’t trying to kill a child,” Hale said.

Below is a map of the area where it happened:

WTOP’s Scott Gelman reported from the scene and added that police said it “was too early to say” if this case is related to another incident that was happening in the area.

“This isn’t about snitching, this is about justice for the victims,” said Hale.

Police are actively investigating this case and are asking for anyone with information to contact them. A $25,000 reward through Crime Solvers will be given to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest.

“We need you. We need the media. We need the community. We need friends of these individuals. We need anybody that was here and saw this to help us,” Hale said.
