    As a beauty editor, I’m lucky enough to get a lot of free skincare, hair, and makeup products to test—mascara included. Right at this very moment, I have over 30 tubes of mascara sitting in a bin in my closet. (Don’t worry; they won’t go to waste.     Our skin type can hugely impact our beauty routine, especially when it comes to primers. One thing I can attest to is the power of hydrating primers for dry skin. Not only will they ensure that you have a smooth canvas for your makeup, but they will also keep your face nice and moisturised underneath.

    The best primers will always help create a base for your foundation to grip onto and will help it stay in place all day. You’ll want to choose a primer based on your skin type. If you have oily skin, you may want to look for a formula that mattifies and controls shine. Those with acne-prone skin might benefit from a primer that includes acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid, but most importantly, your primer should be noncomedogenic, meaning it won’t clog your pores. You can check any formula for pore-clogging ingredients using Acne Clinic NYC’s ingredient checker. I should note that one or two ingredients labeled comedogenic in a formula won’t automatically clog your pores (as celebrity esthetician Renée Rouleau has pointed out, it’s all about the water-to-oil ratio), but it’s a great tool to use that will help you become more aware of what’s in your products and can help you identify any potential triggers.

    However, while the primer you choose can certainly help minimize your pores, Shenelle Mays Smith, a licensed aesthetician and film and TV makeup artist, notes skincare is the first step to minimizing the look of your pores. “One great way to minimize the look of enlarged pores is to use a product with AHAs and BHAs,” she tells us, adding these acids have what she calls “a retexturing effect” on the skin. She also recommends willow bark extract, a natural form of salicylic acid, as it helps keep your skin from becoming inflamed. If you’re prone to breakouts and looking for pore minimization, many primers (including a couple on our list) are infused with this powerhouse ingredient, so you get skincare and prep in one step.  

    Speaking of skincare, we often hear silicones are a no-no for the skin. But Smith says they aren’t as big of a beauty faux pas as we think. “Silicone primers are generally considered safe on the skin and have conditioning and emollient properties which help lock hydration into the skin and prevent moisture loss,” she explains. “The silky and spreadable texture of silicones has made them popular in makeup products [and] silicone-based primers are better on oily skin, as the silicone creates a layer that keeps the oil from breaking through.”

    Celebrity makeup artist Elizabeth Seropian has a few tips for those with dry skin who need a good primer. “Those with dry skin should look for a hydrating primer that moisturizes and nourishes the skin,” she explains. “Choose primers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and botanical oils for added hydration. Opt for primers with a dewy or luminous finish to create a healthy, hydrated base for makeup.”

    Seropian says there are also a few ingredients commonly found in many primers that those with dry skin should avoid. “Avoid primers that contain drying ingredients such as alcohol, fragrance, and harsh chemicals,” she says. “These ingredients can further strip the skin of moisture and add to your dryness. Additionally, silicones and mattifying agents may not be the best choice for dry skin as they can create a barrier that prevents hydration from reaching the skin’s surface. It’s best to look for primers with nourishing and moisturizing ingredients that are gentle and soothing for dry skin.”

    Opinions vary when it comes to whether primers are essential to a makeup routine. We’ve written about the debate before. Some people sit in the “yes” camp, while others might think it’s “just a waste of a product.” Either way, there’s no denying that primers can be helpful in the quest for flawless makeup. They set the stage, so to speak, for your products and can help your makeup last throughout the day. Some can even hydrate if you’ve got dry skin, while others can get your oily skin under control.

    “Primer is not necessary, in my opinion, for day-to-day wear, but for that completely perfect makeup look,” says celebrity makeup artist Maud Laceppe, whose clients include Vanessa Paradis and Julianne Moore. “It will give more of a photoshopped finish. Primer will definitely make your makeup last longer. It smoothes the fine lines, evens out the skin tone, and reduces the size of your pores.”

    But not all primers are created equally, just like everyone’s skin is not the same. “There are primers for all different skin types, so chose one that best suits your skin,” recommends celebrity makeup artist and groomer Georgie Eisdell, who has worked with Gwyneth Paltrow and Sophie Turner. “So if you have oily skin, you might want to use a primer that is oil-free so it can help keep your base looking fresh but not too shiny. If you have drier skin, then locate more hydrating primers or pruning oil to help get a nice glow to the skin.”

    Primers can be such a controversial topic in the beauty industry. While some (like myself) completely swear by them, others can’t stand them or think they’re complete pointless. I will tell you something, though. In my opinion, they’re a must if you have oily or acne-prone skin. Oiliness can be tough to deal with—especially if you have combination skin that gets both dry and oily sometimes. After speaking to countless experts including makeup artists and dermatologists, they all seem to agree that oily skin = unbalanced skin. The deeper layers of your skin might actually be dehydrated—when that happens, it tends to start producing more oil on the surface to overcompensate for the dryness. 

    I found that this was definitely the case for me, but it can also take time (and the right skincare) to bring balance back to your skin. I’ve found that using a serum with multiple molecular weights of hyaluronic acid has been a game changer. Hyaluronic acid is lightweight and helps bind water to the skin to decrease moisture loss and leave it more balanced. In the meantime, though, if you have oilier skin, you can definitely try a primer that’s mattifying and noncomedogenic (meaning it won’t clog your pores) to keep your makeup from melting into a mess within a few hours.
