  • ‘Blade Runner 2099’ Gets Official 2026 Window by Prime Video

    [ad_1]

Good news: we now know Blade Runner 2099 still exists, and it’s on track to hit Prime Video sometime in 2026!

The target window was revealed in an internal memo from the streamer’s TV development head Laura Lancaster. Per Deadline, the memo was to announce a pair of company promotions, and in it, Lancaster remarked new co-production head Kara Smith was “pivotal” in several upcoming shows, including 2099 and the upcoming Spider-Man: Noir, which is also due in 2026. 2099 is currently in post-production, and this update comes a few weeks after executive producer David Zucker told ScreenRant he thought the series would arrive “when Amazon wants that show to air.”

Blade Runner 2099 was announced back in 2022, and marks the franchise’s latest foray into television after Adult Swim’s CG anime Black Lotus. The most we know about the show is its cast: Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer are our two leads Olwen and Cora, and they’re further joined by Tom Burke, Dimitri Abold, and Katelyn Rose Downey. This past March, Burke indicated 2099’s aesthetic would lean more toward the 1982 film over 2017’s Blade Runner 2049, while continuing the threads explored in those two films.

Prime Video’s been careful about keeping 2099 close to the chest, in part because the show’s production was delayed in 2023 during the Hollywood strikes. But we’re not that far out from 2026, and depending on when in the year the show is expected to drop, we may finally get a look at Blade Runner 2099 in the near future.

  • We Tried Universal’s Radical (and Rad-Filled) ‘Fallout’ Food for Halloween Horror Nights

    [ad_1]

Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights is bringing the wasteland from Fallout to life in more ways than the haunted house inspired by the hit Prime Video show and video game.

io9 was recently invited to HHN Hollywood’s food tasting to try the frightful fare coming to the spooky season haunt event. We had the option to preview selections from menu items and merch inspired by this year’s slate of horror IPs coming to the theme park, including Terrifier, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and the Jason (Voorhees) Universe. But it was Fallout that nuclear blasted us away with big hits and surprising misses.

Let’s start with the main courses!

    Fallout Post-Apocalyptic Rations

    © io9 Gizmodo

Loaded Cram Fries: These hearty, cheesy pub fries with fried spam chunks are good for sharing; it’s pretty standard theme park fare. I love the cheese and potato combo always but could do without the spam; the dry, greasy canned meat on top of greasy fries was too heavy.
Roasted Radroach Legs: The TV dinner-style blackened Radroach (turkey) wings with a side of pub fries were pretty solid. The glaze did give it the right color to pass for, you know, a giant roach piece, which works.
Roasted Stingwing: I was pleasantly surprised by the plant-based meatloaf served with insta-mash and mushroom gravy. The mash was a bit flavorless, but that was fine because once it’s worked in with the Stingwing (Beyond) meat and mushroom gravy, it’s so tasty! I had two of these and plan to order at the park when I go again, instead of the Radroach—and I’m not even a vegan; that’s how you know it’s good. I would fight a mutated scorpion fly to eat it if it was rationed in the wasteland.

Other savory options and their descriptions from Universal Studios HHN we’ll try when it’s open:

    • Brahmin Burger – all-beef burger topped with smoked brisket, pickles and BBQ sauce
    • Gulper Stew – creamy clam chowder topped with green onions and crispy bacon
    • Iguana on a Stick – cheesy cornflake-crusted corn dog

    Fallout Dessert and Drinks

    Fallout 4
    © io9 Gizmodo

Yum Yum Deviled Eggs: These nearly got me tricked. I love deviled eggs, and while I do think that would have been a haunting choice to later experience as part of the gaseous smells of the haunted houses, it turns out they’re dessert! The eggs are actually coconut panna cotta filled with Chamoy pineapple bits and topped with mango topping and Tajin. As someone who is not into that profile of flavors, I bowed out but have to hand it to the Universal culinary team; the texture and look had me so fooled. It’s a playful callback to the safe-to-eat-for-200-years Yum Yum Deviled Eggs in the show and games.

RadAway: It comes in a pouch that’s game accurate over show accurate, which is just awesome. It’s a lemonade that has faint notes of chipotle but definitely overpowers the palate with pineapple flavor. If that’s your bag, have fun; I’d rather be a ghoul than drink the RadAway.

The rest of the drink and dessert fare:

    • Vault Dwellers Wedding Cake – red velvet sponge cake with cream cheese mousse
    • Sunset Sarsaparilla – hot honey root beer topped with sweet cold foam (non-alcoholic)
    • Quantum Fizz – blue raspberry Sprite with a sour blue raspberry rim (non-alcoholic)
    • The Nuclear Blast – vodka, peach schnapps, blue curaçao, orange and lemon juice, simple syrup, and Sprite topped with a dehydrated lemon wheel

Take a look at the gallery below for a full preview of the options that will be available this fall at HHN Hollywood!

Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights starts Thursday, September 4, and runs through Sunday, November 2. Tickets are available for purchase here.

  • Thank God, ‘Fallout’ Season 2 Will Release Weekly

    [ad_1]

Just as Lucy, the star of Fallout, continues to learn about the decimated world around her, so too has its streamer, Prime Video. After inexplicably breaking its own mold and releasing the entire first season of the show at once, season two will be released weekl. It premieres on December 17, “with the eight-episode season rolling out with one new episode weekly until the season finale on February 4,” according to a press release.

Hallelujah! The first season of the show was a massive success for the streamer, but it also came and went from the cultural conversation much sooner than it usually would because the whole thing dropped at once. What made the decision even more confusing is that Prime Video doesn’t usually do that. The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, Wheel of Time (RIP), Invincible, The Boys—most of its big genre shows were released weekly. Then here comes Fallout, one of the most highly anticipated video game adaptations ever, made by the same people who made Westworld, and they all dropped all at once. That would’ve made sense if it sucked, but clearly, it did not.

Basically, the choice made no sense then, and it makes no sense now, but it’s in the past. And, to be perfectly honest, it kind of worked. According to Amazon, “To date, Fallout season one has amassed more than 100 million viewers worldwide, ranking among the service’s top three most-watched titles ever.” Take that, every other show on Prime Video except two.

Now, with Fallout season two, fans will be able to dig into each episode, week by week, as we follow Lucy (Ella Purnell), the Ghoul (Walton Goggins), and so many others through the post-apocalyptic world based on the Bethesda video game franchise. We’ll have much more as we approach the December 17 premiere.

Are you with us and happy about this news? Or are you more excited by a show you can binge? Let us know below.

  • Gen V Adds Some Mysterious New Stars to Its Season 2 Cast

Gen V Adds Some Mysterious New Stars to Its Season 2 Cast

    [ad_1]

The Boys got a dose of college-age heroics with Gen V, which focuses on a group of Supes in training attending the prestigious Godolkin University. While the main show is coming to a close, the spinoff is going back to class, and it’s bringing some new students along for the ride.

Per Deadline, actors Keeya King (Yellowjackets), Julia Knope (In the Dark), Tait Fletcher (The Mandalorian), Stephen Kalyn (Warrior Strong), Stacey McGunnigle (This Hour Has 22 Minutes), Wyatt Dorian (Eerie Hall), and Georgie Murphy (Accused) will have recurring roles during Gen V’s sophomore outing. What roles will they have to play in the show’s story, and who will they be at Godolkin? Prime Video’s not saying yet, but season one stars Derek Luh and Maddie Phillips revealed production on the new season wrapped earlier this week. This past March, production paused following the death of Chance Perdomo, who played Andre. In May, Prime Video said his role wouldn’t be recast, and plotlines for the season were subsequently rewritten. Fellow season one stars Jaz Sinclar, Lizzie Broadway, London Thor, Asa Germann will reprise their roles from the previous season.

Both Gen V and The Boys are expected to come back to Prime Video sometime in 2025. The streamer’s also got other spinoffs cooked up: at SDCC, it revealed Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy and Aya Cash’s Stormfront are set to headline Vought Rising, a prequel series set in the 1950s about the birth of the titular Corporation and its rise to creating superheroes. That’ll also joined by a show set in Mexico and executive produced by Gael Garcia Bernal and Andor’s Diego Luna. After that, who knows—maybe a movie?

  • Prime Video’s Secret Level Voice Cast is Full of Heavy Hitters

Prime Video’s Secret Level Voice Cast is Full of Heavy Hitters

    [ad_1]

It was only a few months ago that we learned Prime Video, Blur Studios, and Deadpool director Tim Miller had a video game series called Secret Level in the works. Instead of focusing on one specific game like most shows in the genre do, Secret Level is an anthology focusing on a variety of big triple-A and indie games that’ve released throughout the decades. And now we know the talent that’ll be lending their voices to this endeavor.

During the show’s panel at New York Comic-Con, Prime Video unveiled Secret Level’s star-studded cast. Alongside longtime voice actor Laura Bailey, the main voices include Arnold Schwarzenegger and his son Patrick, Kevin Hart and his daughter Heaven, Keanu Reeves, Ricky Whittle (American Gods), Star Wars alums Emily Swallow and Temuera Morrison, Claudia Doumit (The Boys), Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie), Clive Standen (Vikings), Michael Beach (The Perfect Couple), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost), and The Last of Us stars Gabriel Luna and Merle Dandridge.

As far as who they’re playing or what episodes they’ll be in, Prime Video is keeping that info close to the chest for now. But we know Secret Level’s episodes will focus on games like The Outer Worlds, Spelunky, PlayStation (as a brand), Warhammer 40,000, and Concord, so feel free to map an actor to a game you think they’d be best suited to. While there wasn’t a new trailer shown, there is some new key art below, which shows off the array of titles that’ll be featured during the 15-episode season.

Secret Level hits Prime Video on December 10, with two episodes airing per week.

  • MrBeast & Amazon Hit With Sexual Harassment, Wages & Nevada Tax Credits Scamming Class Action Suit By Game Show Contestants

MrBeast & Amazon Hit With Sexual Harassment, Wages & Nevada Tax Credits Scamming Class Action Suit By Game Show Contestants

    [ad_1]

It’s been a Hell of a summer for MrBeast, and things don’t seem to be looking up now with a potential class action lawsuit filed against the YouTube superstar and Amazon by contestants from the upcoming Beast Games show.

As the anonymous “Contestant 5” states in the heavily redacted complaint: “I expected to be challenged, but I didn’t think I would be treated like nothing — less than nothing.”

Possibly running into the millions in damages if certified, the September 16 filing in LA Superior Court alleges that MrBeast and the Jeff Bezos created streamer “subjected the Contestants to unreasonable, unsafe, and unlawful employment conditions.” With claims of sexual harassment, failure to prevent harassment, false advertising, and failure to pay  minimum wage or overtime, those conditions saw “several contestants
hospitalized,” the 54-page jury trial demanding document alleges.

Perhaps most damaging corporately to MrBeast and Amazon is the allegation the supposedly $100 million budgeted Beast Games production played fast and loose with the rules to secure Nevada tax credits. The filing says Beast Games made “Plaintiffs and the Proposed Class to enter into illegal contracts and providing false information to the State of Nevada to obtain unearned tax credits.”

In supposedly misclassifying contestants like the five initial plaintiffs as Nevada citizens and otherwise, the far from skint MrBeast and Amazon were able to snag about $2,252,523 in incentives from the Silver State.

Based on MrBeast’s already successful YouTube show, back in the spring Beast Games gave itself bragging rights  “to become the biggest reality competition series ever with 1000 contestants competing for a $5 million dollar cash prize.”  Drawing in around 1,000 participants, MrBeast serves as Beast Games host and executive producer with the show set to premiere  exclusively later this year or in early 2025 on Prime Video domestically and internationally.

Just launching off MrBeast’s 316 million YouTube subscribers alone and Prime Video’s massive reach, the still in production Beast Games has streaming hit written all over it, right?

Sure, but with all the hoopla in which the $5million payout Beast Games competition show was announced back in March, you’d think MrBeast and Amazon would want to put their best face forward on these allegations. Even more so, being that most of what the suit asserts had been made public last month in a big New York Times feature, you’d think MrBeast and Amazon would be ready with some sort of response.

    Alas no.

Neither representatives for the influencer born Jimmy Donaldson nor Amazon responded to request from Deadline for comment on the complaint. If and when they do, this post will be updated.

Instead, in echoes of the NYT article on alleged mistreatment on the Las Vegas set of the Beast Games, claims by the five unnamed contestants who filed the action detail “suffering physical and mental complications while being subjected to chronic mistreatment, degradation and, for the female contestants, hostile working conditions.”

According to the complaint, none of this was by accident as “Defendants exercised total control over the manner, means and timing of the work performed by the Contestants, by controlling essentially every aspect of their lives during the production of the show.” That control was in part fueled by the so-called “How to Succeed in MrBeast Productions” manual, which pushed mantras lies “empower the boys” and “let them be idiots.” Still, the filings proclaims that “Defendants’ management, up to and including senior management and ownership” were fully aware of the alleged “violence and sexual harassment” on Beast Games, and did nothing.

“The foregoing acts by Defendants created an environment during Beast Games that was so void of humane standards that Defendants ended up volunteering to cover the cost of the Contestants’ therapy, it was that bad,” the complaint exclaims.

Seems a bit of a distance away from the promises of last month that MrBeast’s rapidly expanding company to “hire a chief human resources officer and require company-wide sensitivity training.”

The allegations in this potential Beast Games class action don’t quite jive either with Donaldson’s hiring of pricey law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan to investigate former co-host Ava Tyson, who left MrBeast in July after allegations surfaced of inappropriate sexual messages with minors. Along with that this summer, there was the NYT expose of Beast Games and MrBeast  under fire for slurs he made in videos from his early years.

That’s why they call it survival of the fittest.

  • Good Omens Season 3 Reportedly Paused Amid Neil Gaiman Controversy

Good Omens Season 3 Reportedly Paused Amid Neil Gaiman Controversy

    [ad_1]

After that cliffhanger that ended season two of Good Omens, and the joy of learning that indeed a third season was coming to address that kiss, among other things, fans of the Prime Video series starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant may have to wait a bit longer, for reasons that presumably have little to do with angels, demons, and apocalypses. Deadline is reporting that work on season three has “paused,” with “possible production changes” being considered.

If you’ve been keeping up with entertainment news, you can easily read between the lines. The Emmy-nominated Good Omens is based on the novel co-written by Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett; Gaiman—an oft-adapted author whose current shows also include Netflix’s The Sandman—has been actively involved in the TV series, including acting as showrunner and writer.

Controversy around Gaiman has heightened since the July release of a four-part podcast series titled Master: the Allegations Against Neil Gaiman from UK-based Tortoise Media; it investigates accusations of sexual assault brought by multiple women over a span of years against the author. Rolling Stone has also covered the story. The Deadline article notes that “Gaiman has denied the allegations and said he was ‘disturbed’ by them.”

The trade also points out that another Gaiman adaptation, Disney feature The Graveyard Book, has also been put “on pause,” which IndieWire reported on last week—though Deadline cites “insiders” as saying “multiple factors went into the decision” regarding Graveyard. Variety’s late August scoop on the cancellation of Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives, another Gaiman series, does not mention the allegations at all.

When reached by io9, Prime Video representatives had no comment regarding the Deadline story on Good Omens season three.

  • Fallout’s Walton Goggins on Preparing to Play the Ghoul

Fallout’s Walton Goggins on Preparing to Play the Ghoul

    [ad_1]

Most people plan to show up for a new job well-prepared—but few are as ready for action as Walton Goggins was for Fallout. In a new interview, the actor talked about how he crafted his Emmy-nominated performance, bringing layers of nuance and complexity to a character that starts off in the show’s timeline as a 1950s movie cowboy, then pops up hundreds of years later as a noseless outlaw roaming the nuclear wastelands.

Speaking to Vulture, Goggins—a veteran actor who’s long been crafting memorable characters on TV (Justified, Deadwood, The Righteous Gemstones, The Shield, Invincible) and in movies (Predators, The Hateful Eight, Ant-Man and the Wasp)—gave a peek inside his acting process. To say it’s both thorough and detail-obsessed would be an understatement.

“[I] watched a lot of movies that I have seen before in preparation for this, really kind of looking not so much for the Ghoul, even though that was a part of it, but Cooper Howard. He is a 1950s western-movie star. So I really wanted to understand who his contemporaries were. What jobs did he lose out on? What jobs did he get?,” Goggins told Vulture.

He thought about Howard’s path to Hollywood stardom—in Goggins’ mind, he was a charismatic guy who was good at riding horses and just sort of fell into show biz—and studied, in particular, Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West and Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He also read the Fallout script 250 times, something he learned to do from former co-star Anthony Hopkins, and that helps him absorb the material intuitively: “Your ego really has to get out of the way.”

To get into the Ghoul’s mindset specifically, Goggins really focused on the mental transformation Howard went thorough all those years in the post-apocalypse. “Whenever you say, on paper, Oh, he’s been alive for 200 years. That’s hard to wrap your head around,” Goggins said.

He continued. “I don’t think about it in those terms. It’s like, let’s break down these 200 years. What does that really look like? Day one: What happened in the moment after the bomb dropped? Did he wake up five days later? Did he get up immediately?
Then I thought, what was it like the first time somebody tried to kill him for food or water, for resources? Right? What was it like the first day he had to kill someone for those very things? And the disintegration of a true morality—what is your true north? And the disintegration of everything he knew. He comes from a moral into an amoral existence.”

Fallout season one is now streaming on Prime Video; the Ghoul’s journey will continue in season two.

  • NBA TV rights go to ESPN, NBC and Amazon as TNT is rejected

NBA TV rights go to ESPN, NBC and Amazon as TNT is rejected

    [ad_1]

The NBA and WNBA have inked deals for where games will be aired and streamed for the next eleven years. The NBA deals run from the 2025-2026 season through the 2035-2036 season. For the WNBA, the agreement covers the 2026 through 2036 seasons.

Pro basketball has been an ESPN mainstay for years and that will continue, with the Disney-owned network remaining the primary media rights owner for both leagues. ESPN will be the exclusive home for the NBA finals for all eleven years of the new deal, as well as five out of the eleven years of the WNBA finals. The games covered by ESPN’s deal will be part of the sports network’s direct-to-consumer platform and a package of NBA and WNBA games will also be made available to stream on Disney+ in select international markets.

While the bulk of the games will go to ESPN, basketball is going to have more of a streaming presence thanks to two new partnerships. NBC and Peacock will have access to 100 NBA national games during each regular season. About 50 games will be exclusive to the Peacock streaming platform, including national Monday night games and doubleheaders. The rest of the games go to Amazon. Prime Video will be the home for 66 regular-season NBA games and 30 regular-season WNBA games each year of the deal.

Regular basketball viewers may notice that TNT Sports is not part of this lineup. The NBA’s deal with that network does not appear to be getting an extension after next year, with those games mostly going to Amazon. But the situation may yet go into overtime. TNT Sports that it matched Amazon’s offer for the games and seems to be challenging whether the NBA can switch partners. NBA’s statement that the offer from parent company Warner Bros. Discovery did not match Amazon’s, leaving them free to shop elsewhere.

The long-awaited agreements for both basketball leagues aren’t a complete slam dunk for fans. On the positive side, the next decade marks a notable shift toward streaming. After so long with the sport closely tied to broadcast shows, having access as part of your existing streaming plans is great. But on the negative side, multiple media partners mean that you’ll have to double- and triple-check where to watch each game. Major League Baseball, for instance, has games scattered across ESPN, Fox, Apple TV+, TNT Sports, and MLB Network on any given night.

Majors, who continues to navigate an uncertain future in Hollywood, appeared to be having a timeeee while dancing with his boo Meagan Good at the event.

Whether Meagan Good was embarrassed by, uh, whatever Jonathan was doing remains to be seen but the viral clip was a HIT online, fueling hilarious tweets, memes, and jokes across the internet.

Prior to Majors cutting up at the party, Meagan showed off her stunning physique in a curve-caressing Laquan Smith dress alongside her boo thang at the premiere in New York.

The actress gushed to EXTRA about how Majors has helped motivate her in the gym.

“He just has a crazy workout. He’s consistent. He’s like the 5 a.m. crew, I’m like the 10 a.m. crew, but we get it in and it’s been a blessing.”

She also opened up about her relationship with Majors, noting how they have been sources of support for each other.

“We just cover each other. You know, pray together, talk about everything, talk through everything, have just real honest conversations, have fun together, dance together a lot, sing together a lot, road trip together a lot, raise dogs together, and all the good things.”

Good was joined at the premiere by Tyler Perry and the film’s other stars Joseph Lee Anderson, Debi Morgan, Richard Lawson, Taylor Polidore, Shannon Wallace, and Ursula O. Robinson.

In Divorce In The Black (now streaming on Prime Video), a young woman named Ava (Meagan Good) is devastated when her husband abandons their marriage. Determined to fight for love, she attempts to make things work until fate intervenes, revealing the wicked deeds that once upon a time sabotaged Ava’s destiny to connect with her soulmate.

  • The Boys’ Valorie Curry Explains That Scene With Homelander

The Boys’ Valorie Curry Explains That Scene With Homelander

    [ad_1]

Warning: Huge spoilers for The Boys season 4, episode 6.

Valorie Curry grew up in California, but not the progressive California people so often think of. “I grew up in Orange County, in the suburbs south of LA,” she tells StyleCaster. “So these days, it’s very purple, but when I was growing up, it was very conservative, very religious. We took school field trips to the Nixon Library.”

Playing a far-right ideologue and conspiracy theorist, Curry’s character in Prime Video‘s hit series The Boys draws from many larger-than-life nut jobs—some of Firecracker’s dialogue comes from the actual mouths of politicians—but this actor has a lot of personal experience to be inspired by, too. “There is something cathartic in getting to do this clowning act,” she says. “It’s that stuff that you forget from your childhood, and then there’s this muscle memory that kicks in.”

Related: The Best The Boys‘ Theories on the Worm Inside Billy Butcher’s Head

When she signed onto the show, Curry didn’t know much about her character, other than “her history with Starlight, her podcast, and her politics,” but it wasn’t until the making of Firecracker’s supersuit, an arduous, time-consuming process, that it really all started to come together. Curry was flying in and out of LA every 10 days for months because every detail of Firecracker’s suit is intentional, right down to the zip pull at the back. “It’s a cock ring,” she laughs. Of course it is! “It has to hold, but it also has to be soft enough if you’re getting thrown around,” she explains.

Curry has never played such a hyper-feminine, sexualized role before, and in episode 6, Firecracker’s true powers are explored in great detail. “This character essentially embodies the male gaze,” she observes. “A weaponization of femininity and self-objectification.”

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity. We did warn you, spoilers ahead.

Valorie Curry (Firecracker) in The Boys season 4

There’s a lot to unpack in this episode. We learn that Firecracker has been taking hormones to make herself lactate to prove she’s loyal to the cause and to Homelander (Antony Starr). Did you know the breastfeeding scene was on the agenda at the start?
I did not know. The idea was floated to me a couple of months before, and then I saw the script about a month before. It seems inevitable, like, “Of course, this is happening.” I’ve watched the show and it’s been building to somebody doing this with Homelander. I don’t think of it so much as a being about loyalty though, Firecracker does have this really preternatural intuition about what people need and a shameless willingness to give that to them, whatever it is.

In shooting this scene and going back and forth on the dialogue, there’s a real danger about it. There is a vulnerability in saying to Homelander, “I see your humanity, I see what you’ve been trying to hide—this thing that’s viewed as a very freakish fetish,” and she’s naming it to him. At that moment, she also gets to show him she’s not afraid of him. Because he could, at any point, laser her face off.

How many takes of the milk squirt did you do?
The good thing about having the time built in to really fine-tune that scene was that we got to work with this incredible intimacy coordinator, Casey Hudecki. She was invaluable to me in the process. So when we got to set, we knew exactly what every single shot was going to be. It was very clearly storyboarded.

Is there a bottle or something just off-camera?
No! This is all sightline gags, so two things have to happen—and credit to the crew to make this work. One of them was that the wardrobe department had a weekend to build some kind of undergarment structure that would allow me to unzip the front and still have the cleavage still be perky. I’m literally wearing two cutlets per breast [laughs], there is so much padding.

They went through three or four different phases of corsets, and then I think it was Casey’s idea—because she’s a fencer—to use a fencing breastplate. Then, if you can picture a microphone stand with a tube running from the other side of Homelander’s apartment, there’s this little nozzle that they kept having to adjust so it was at the right height for me to get the right trajectory and the right amount of milk. Anthony did take almond milk straight in the eye in one shot.

You would think that this very sexualized character is going to be the one who’s doing very sexually explicit things. Even though the scene is extreme in its content, it’s not sexual by nature.

    Valorie Curry

I was going to ask if it was real milk or just milky water.
Yeah, I think it was almond. And I think I was at least two and a half feet away from him.

His reaction is just so good, too.
Yeah, the timing and the edit of it, it’s just beautiful.

It’s an interesting contrast, too, because we’ve seen Homelander grapple with aging this season—he’s literally plucking his gray pubes out and keeping them in a jar. Then you see him with you and he becomes an infant again.
Yeah. The other thing I want to speak to about this scene in particular is that it could have been very sexual and it could have been a joke. I love that where we got—and Antony and I were still on the same page about it—that it is so vulnerable and not sexual.

You would think that this very sexualized character is going to be the one who’s doing very sexually explicit things. Even though the scene is extreme in its content, it’s not sexual by nature. In contrast, you’ve got characters like Sister Sage and Ashley

    This episode is INSANE.
Ashely’s stuff in the dungeon! Everyone is finding a new limit that we did not know existed [laughs].

Homelander in The Boys season 4, episode 6

Can you talk about how this moment changes Firecracker’s trajectory?
So much of this episode is about Firecracker and her trauma of being dismissed or being marginalized or being treated like she’s trash. This is finally the moment where she thinks she’s in, and even then, she’s not really in. I think she’s also pushed to this moment with this choice because she’s finally showing that she should not be underestimated.

There’s even this joke about being in The Seven and what powers she really has, but it’s a real turn in that jostle for power. I don’t think Sage saw Firecracker coming, which serves her because sometimes it’s really cool to be underestimated.

I want to touch on something you said in a previous interview about being a queer person yourself playing this character who is aggressively anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQIA, etc. You said that it should be one of our own that gets to make an ass out of Firecracker. I loved that.
Thank you. Yeah, I have a pet peeve with actors who are on shows that clearly have political themes or have something to say, and then when they’re asked to speak to it, they equivocate. I understand the desire to not alienate anyone, but with a character like Firecracker, she has to be dealt with delicately because there’s a real danger there.

She’s representing real dangers with real people who are committing real violence against marginalized communities, and if you play the role in a way that minimizes that violence, and that danger, that is a problem. I’m not saying that an actor who isn’t queer wouldn’t do that, but I am excited to get to play her and get to have conversations like these where I get to make the politics explicit.

The show is unapologetic, I love working for a showrunner like Kripke where his politics are explicit. I felt like I was on a show where I could trust that this character could be handled responsibly. I do find it cathartic, and it’s what I hope for queer audiences, for any audience, that in watching the show, it’s sort of a reverse gaslighting. Another interviewer called it “spotlighting.”

There might be a catharsis in saying, “This is real, this is happening, and we’re going to show it and we’re going to show it as ugly and villainous, and absurd and stupid,” but also not undermining the real danger of it.

The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video with new episodes dropping each Thursday.

  • The Truth About Whether That Was Actually Karl Urban’s Butt in The Boys

The Truth About Whether That Was Actually Karl Urban’s Butt in The Boys

    [ad_1]

Look, you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t already know The Boys is full of NSFW moments. Season 4 is no exception, but there’s one moment in particular that has fans swarming Reddit for answers. Just who’s butthole was that??

For context, this all goes down in episode 1. Billy Butcher (played by Karl Urban) is texting the vice presidential candidate, Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit). She asks to see all the files Hughie was using to blackmail her, promising in return to get Ryan away from Homelander so Butcher could save him and fulfill his promise to his late wife Becca. Turns out, Billy’s loyalty is still to The Boys, and his explicit text is proof of that (it was so explicit that it was actually censored in several countries along with the sauna scene).

    Whose butthole was it?

Sorry to disappoint, it wasn’t Karl Urban’s. The story about whose butthole it actually was is perhaps funnier, though. “Because hundreds of you asked: the butthole from #TheBoys Season 4, Ep 1 is NOT Butcher’s (or Karl’s),” showrunner Eric Kripke tweeted. “We hired a model (I don’t know his name). I chose the pic, based on about 20 different butthole shots. Yep, Hollywood is a glamorous dream factory.”

Kripke also explained that Doumit’s reaction was genuine because she had no idea it was coming. “When Claudia was shooting it, for all the wide angles, it’s a blue screen. You can’t see what’s on the phone, so she’s reacting to a blue screen,” Kripke told Collider.

“And then, when we moved in for close-up method acting style, we put the real butt on the phone, so her reaction is her real reaction to seeing that butt. I don’t know if we should feel good about that or horrible, but that’s how we got a real reaction from Claudia,” he added.

Before Kripke addressed the speculation, Reddit was full of theories. “Did butcher take a picture of his own hairy asshole or did he google ‘hairy asshole’ and spend some time scrolling to find a good one to send?” wrote one fan.

“For some reason I find it funnier to imagine butcher googling pictures of hairy assholes than him actually bending over and setting up the camera to take a picture of his own asshole. [sic]” Another added: “The lighting in the picture wouldn’t make much sense for this. It makes way more sense that it’s not his own but people will prefer to believe it’s his because funny. [sic]”

Dakota Johnson and Sonoya Mizuno in ‘Am I OK?’

    Premieres Wednesday:

Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial — Documentary legend Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost) takes a six-episode stroll through the history of the Third Reich, with the Nuremberg Trials as a framing device. If you’re unfamiliar with that aspect of the story, the Nazis all had their convictions overturned on appeal because the judge hadn’t allowed them to tweet smack about the Allies. (Netflix)

How to Rob a Bank — Explore the methodology of the late Scott Scurlock, who got dubbed “The Hollywood Bandit” for wearing theatrical disguises while holding up 17 banks in the Seattle area. Fun fact: The Unknown Comic tried something similar after falling on hard times, but drawing a new face on the bag for each heist didn’t fool anybody. (Netflix)

Under Paris — Remember when BĂ©rĂ©nice Bejo was nominated for an Oscar for her role in The Artist? Now she’s starring in a Netflix movie as a scientist who discovers a giant, bloodthirsty shark lurking in the river Seine. And that’s all it is: just a shark. If the woman’s going to wave the white flag on her whole-ass career, the least they could do is make it half kraken or something. (Netflix)

    Premieres Thursday:

Am I OK? — Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne direct Dakota Johnson as a woman who has to confront the real reason she can’t form successful relationships with men. Personally, I’m guessing it’s because they aren’t bears. (Max)

Baki Hanma vs. Kengan Ashura — Characters from the two hit manga series meet in a contest of martial-arts prowess. It’s kind of like RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars, but with a slightly lesser possibility of violence. (Netflix)

Basma — Writer/director/star Fatima Al-Banawi drew on her degree in psychology to compile this dramatic portrait of a young woman who returns to her native Saudi Arabia after completing her academic studies in the U.S.A., just in time to discover that her father has become a delusional paranoiac. Gosh, a guy really has to be crazy if he still seems off to you after you’ve been living with Americans. (Netflix)

Counsel Culture — Get a better understanding of the mental-health issues facing today’s men in this series hosted by Nick Cannon and adapted from his podcast of the same name. Because “Nick Cannon” and “podcasting” are two things that always go together perfectly smoothly, as your rabbi well knows. (Prime Video Freevee)

Criminal Minds: Evolution — As Season 2 dawns, the members of the Behavioral Analysis Unit are shocked to learn that last season’s big bad — serial killer Elias Voit — has been transferred to their own neck of the woods by the feds. It seems like this shouldn’t be too much of a concern unless you don’t trust the feds. So count me in, because boy do I not trust the feds! (Paramount+)

KĂŒbra — The Turkish thriller series has cooked up even more trouble for protagonist Gokhan Sahinoglu, whose acceptance of his role as a modern-day prophet threatens to put him at odds with just about everybody in Season 2. Yeah, people just naturally resent a prophet. Look at what Britney has to deal with every day. (Netflix)

Nelma Kodama: The Queen of Dirty Money — Fresh out of prison for her involvement in one of Brazil’s most infamous corruption cases, the black-market money trader sits down with interviewers to paint herself as a mere stooge to an all-powerful criminal network. Smart move, Nelma. Everybody hates Ticketmaster. (Netflix)

Queer Planet — The next time somebody insists to you that heteronormativity is the natural order of things, plunk them down in front of this documentary about the fluidity of sexuality that exists throughout the animal world. Just make sure they’re wearing pants, because you never know what’s going to turn those people’s crank. (Peacock)

Rafa Márquez: El Capitán — Go straight to the horse’s mouth to learn about the highs and lows in the life of the great Mexican defender. “Ooh, a defender! Like a crusading public defender?” No. “OK, maybe an Aztec soldier with a nifty golden sword?” Nope, defender as in soccer. “Goddammit, hasn’t the UN’s Human Rights Council outlawed that yet?” (Netflix)

Sweet Tooth — The third and final season takes the action to Alaska, where human/deer hybrid Gus is pursued by forces dedicated to the cause of human supremacy. On the plus side, I think Marisa Tomei has finally convinced Joe Pesci not to shoot him. (Netflix)

Daniel BrĂŒhl and ThĂ©odore Pellerin in ‘Becoming Karl Lagerfeld’

    Premieres Friday:

Becoming Karl Lagerfeld — Daniel BrĂŒhl plays the title role in a French-made period piece that shows the legendary designer battling rival Yves Saint-Laurent (Arnaud Valois) to define fashion in the ’70s. Interestingly, the series only came about because the French government announced it was willing to fund “somezing like ze Ryain Murph-AY.” (Hulu)

Hierarchy — Just when they’ve fully accustomed themselves to their school’s rigid social order, the students at a Korean private academy have to cope with a whole bunch of unfamiliar phenomena, like untimely death and the arrival of a new pupil who’s there on a scholarship. I mean, the occasional corpse is something every kid should learn to deal with, but a full-rider? Ewwwww! (Netflix)

Perfect Match — Season 2 brings together past contestants from shows like Love Is Blind, The Ultimatum and Too Hot to Handle to find a pairing that might actually stick this time — and to vote on one another’s prospects while they’re at it. Here’s hoping Season 3 adds the Baby Reindeer chick, to really spice things up. (Netflix)

Queenie — Author Candice Carty-Williams is executive producer and showrunner of this series adaptation of her 2019 novel, with Dionne Brown in the title role of a 20-something Jamaican British woman who reacts to being dumped by making some questionable choices. Hey, getting dumped is when you get to make all the questionable choices you want. Sleep around! Share needles! Become a showrunner! This is your mulligan! (Hulu)

Transformers: EarthSpark — The first nine episodes of Season 2 feature guest voice-over work from Richard Ayoade, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Flea. Not to be outdone, Luther Campbell is lobbying hard for a part in the next He-Man show. (Paramount+)

    Premieres Tuesday:

How Music Got Free — Yes, that title is meant to be ironic. Because what we have here is an industry-sponsored excoriation of the file-sharing explosion of the early 21st century, with the tech innovators of the time denounced as “thieves” who ruined music for everybody. But seriously, if that were true, the recording artists of today wouldn’t be able to make a single penny for their
 oh, shit. ShitshitSHIT. (Paramount+)

Keith Robinson: Different Strokes — Get a humorous lesson in perseverance from comic Robinson, who suffered life-threatening strokes in both 2016 and 2020. But that’s what’s  gonna happen when a guy’s refreshing fivethirtyeight.com every 10 seconds. (Netflix)

Love Island — Ariana Madix of Vanderpump Rules replaces Sarah Hyland as host in Season 6, with the action now set in Fiji. Meanwhile, herpes replaces hepatitis C as the pathogen you’re most likely to contract from just watching. (Peacock)

Tour de France: Unchained — Season 2 invites us to relive the thrills of the 2023 race, through every one of its 21 nail-biting stages. (Is anybody else a little weirded out that that’s three times as many stages as grief gets?) (Netflix)

Warner Bros. Discovery UK Boss Says Streaming Has Moved On From “Subscriber Growth At Any Cost” But “Churn” Remains A Problem

    [ad_1]

Warner Bros. Discovery‘s (WBD) boss in the UK has said the streaming industry has moved “smartly” away from a “subscriber growth almost at any cost” approach.

“Scale is important but profitable growth with responsible spending is much more important,” Andrew Georgiou, who was promoted last year, told the Deloitte and Enders Media & Telecoms 2024 and Beyond Conference in London.

He talked up WBD and others’ commitment to bundling as a way to battle against the issue of subscriber churn, which is having big knock-on impacts on the business.

“Netflix is a mainstay but we are starting to see real SVoD churn, people cycling in and out at an increasing rate,” he added. “That phenomenon is a huge cost to business and reducing that churn, increasing engagement and reducing the cost of ‘winbacks’ is something we all need to focus on.”

He was speaking on a panel after Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters talked up the streamer’s breadth of content in the UK.

“The bundling opportunity provides better lifetime value,” Georgiou went on to say. “It used to be subscriber growth at any cost but we’ve moved smartly away from that phenomenon. Scale is important but profitable growth with responsible spending is much more important.”

Around the world there are “deeper, more collaborative experiments” in bundling taking place, Georgiou added, pointing to WBD U.S. sports bundles as an example.

He cited major differences between the U.S. and UK that U.S. businesses need to remain cognisant of, saying that 58% of TV is watched on free services in the latter compared to less than 25% in the former.

Chris Bird, who runs Prime Video in the UK and was speaking alongside Georgiou, stressed Amazon‘s commitment to bundling, pointing to the potential for customers to subscribe to Discovery+ and other “special interest content.”

He used the session to reiterate Amazon’s commitment to the public broadcasters and “inward investment to support the UK sector” in “challenging” economic times.

Georgiou and Bird also backed the Media Bill, which squeaked through parliament before it was dissolved for the general election. Georgiou said Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer did an “outstanding” job in finding a “balance between commercial and public interest.”

The likes of Disney EMEA boss Jan Koeppen and Sky head Dana Strong are also speaking at the London event.

And, well, it’s time for a remount. Prime Video has announced a Legally Blonde prequel series titled Elle, produced by Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine. According to a press release, Elle will follow a high-school-age Elle Woods “as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love.” That’s incredibly vague, and we’re sad to think of a Legally Blonde property without Paulette, but we are choosing to channel our inner Elle Woods and be optimistic about the series anyway.

“I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series!” Witherspoon said in a statement. “Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?!” Well, Reese, we actually have an answer: What could be better is a reality competition in which 20-year-olds must fight to play Elle Woods. It worked for Madonna

    [ad_1]

Amazon is diving headfirst into the world of sports documentaries with four new projects on its streaming slate, including one on Dale Earnhardt Sr. and another about a Kansas City Chiefs super fan that will cross over int0 true crime as well.

The company announced all four projects during its Upfront presentation on Tuesday.

    The documentaries are as follows:

A four-part documentary on NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Sr.; a four-part series chronicling the history of the Madden video game franchise; an anthology series about the most epic Game 7s throughout sports history; and a true-crime documentary about ChiefsAholic, the notorious Kansas City Chiefs superfan and serial bank robber.

More details about each are below.

    Untitled Earnhardt Documentary
The history of the Earnhardt family is the history of NASCAR—you can’t tell the story of one without the other—and at the center of the Earnhardt family was Dale Earnhardt Sr., the most influential figure the sport has ever known. A charismatic, working-class hero to millions of fans, Dale Sr. spent the better part of two decades as the most visible figure in stock car racing, breaking through the confines of them sport’s regional fan base to mainstream notoriety, racking up millions in endorsement deals from Coca-Cola to Wheaties, and appearing on daytime TV and late-night talk shows. From one generation to the next, racing would bring the Earnhardt family together, but it wasn’t always an easy road. Now, with unparalleled access and never before seen archival material, the Untitled Earnhardt Documentary promises a profound, revealing, and definitive account of a historic American family.

The documentary produced by Imagine Documentaries, NASCAR Studios, and Everyone Else, in association with Dirty Mo Media. The series is executive produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Sara Bernstein, and Justin Wilkes of Imagine Entertainment; Matt Summers and Tim Clark of NASCAR Studios; and TJ Martin, Dan Lindsay, and Tony Mayhoff.

    Untitled EA Madden Documentary
It’s one of the biggest video games of all time, a groundbreaking brand that became a worldwide phenomenon, spanning generations — but it almost never happened

This project reveals the never-been-told story of Madden NFL, from its archaic 8-bit origins to its success as an annual must have—against all odds. For the first time ever, EA SPORTS is opening their vault of rare and never-been-seen footage, while also allowing cameras to follow along as the team finishes the next generation of the game. What started as an unlikely pairing between a computer whiz and a football legend, ignited a revolution and triggered a seismic collision between the worlds of jocks and geeks. They should have failed. Instead, their game changed the game—and our culture, too.

The series is produced by A+E Factual Studios group, SMAC Productions, Misher Films, and MTP.
