  • Powerball jackpot hits $1.1 billion. What Iowa players need to know before Labor Day drawing

    [ad_1]

Labor Day could bring more than a long holiday weekend. Someone could end up a millionaire, at least if they win Powerball’s jackpot, which has climbed to an estimated $1.1 billion annuity ($498.4 million cash), the fifth-largest in the game’s history.

Here’s what to know about how the Powerball works.

How much did Iowans win on Aug. 30?

Saturday’s Powerball included total prizes of $266,993 for Iowans, according to the Iowa Lottery. The winning numbers were 3-18-22-27-33, Powerball 17, Power Play 3.

Iowans purchased more than $2.28 million in tickets for the drawing, the Iowa Lottery said. The average ticket purchase? $6 per customer.

Powerball offers nine prize levels, not just the jackpot.

The Powerball jackpot for Sept. 1, 2025, is an estimated $1.1 billion.

Busting myths about the Powerball jackpot

Myth: The cash value is the annuity minus taxes.

Fact: With the annuity option, the winner receives 30 payments over 29 years, funded by investments, the Iowa Lottery said. Taxes are withheld from each payment.

With the cash option, the winner receives a one-time lump sum from ticket sales, according to the Iowa Lottery. Taxes are withheld upfront.

    When are the Powerball drawings?

Powerball drawings are held three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, with the drawing broadcast live at 9:59 p.m. Central Time from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee, the Iowa Lottery said.

Powerball added Monday drawings in August 2021, joining Wednesday and Saturday to boost jackpots and create more winners.

What is the cutoff time to buy tickets?

In Iowa, the sales cutoff time for Powerball tickets is 8:59 p.m. Central Time on the night of the drawing, according to the Iowa Lottery.

If you purchase a ticket after the 8:59 p.m. deadline, it will automatically be entered into the following drawing instead of the current one.

    When did Iowa join Powerball?

Legislation creating Iowa’s lottery was signed into law in April 1985, according to the Iowa Lottery. The Iowa Lottery began sales on Aug. 22, 1985, with a kickoff celebration at the Iowa State Fair. Then, the Iowa Lottery joined Powerball in April 1992, with ticket sales starting on April 19 and the first drawing held on April 22.

Before Powerball, many states participated in Lotto America, which started in 1988. Iowa has participated in Lotto America since its original launch in 1988 and is also a current participant in the game’s revived version, Powerball

From 1992 through 2008, Powerball drawings were typically held in West Des Moines.

Who won the largest Powerball jackpot in Iowa?

The largest Powerball jackpot won in Iowa was in October 2018, when Lerynne West of Redfield claimed a $343.9 million prize. West split a $687.8 million jackpot with another winner from New York and opted for the $198.1 million cash lump-sum payout.

The Shipping 20, a group of 20 co-workers at the Quaker Oats plant in Cedar Rapids, won a $241 million Powerball jackpot in June 2012.

Brian and Mary Lohse of Bondurant won a $202.1 million Powerball jackpot in October 2012.

  • Powerball jackpot grows to $1.1 billion after Saturday drawing ends without a winner

    [ad_1]

DES MOINES, Iowa — Powerball players will get another chance Monday at a jackpot estimated at over $1 billion, after no one won the big prize Saturday night.

No one has matched all six numbers since May 31, allowing the jackpot to swell to $1.1 billion, which would be the fifth-largest prize in the game’s history. Payments would be spread over 30 years, or a winner could choose an immediate lump sum of an estimated $498.4 million, again before taxes.

The odds of matching all six numbers are astronomical: 1 in 292.2 million. The likelihood of getting struck by lightning is far greater. But with so many people putting down money for a chance at life-changing wealth, someone eventually wins.

The numbers drawn Saturday were 3, 18, 22, 27 and 33, with the Powerball 17.

Powerball, which costs $2 per ticket, is played in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held each week on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights.

PARKER, Colo. — While no one in Colorado took home the “big one” from Saturday’s Powerball drawing—or anyone, for that matter—a ticket sold in the state made at least one person an instant millionaire.

One ticket sold at a King Soopers in Parker, located at 12959 S. Parker Road, won its owner $2 million after the person matched five numbers plus the Powerplay, Colorado Lottery officials said Saturday.

    🎱 Winning Numbers: 3, 18, 22, 27, 33, Powerball 17

Winners in Denver and Colorado Springs matched four of five numbers, plus the Powerball, and won $50,000, multiplied by the Powerplay of x3.

The Denver winning ticket was sold at Safeway, located at 3800 W. 44th Avenue, and the Colorado Springs winner purchased their ticket at 7-Eleven, situated at 3805 E. Pikes Peak Avenue.

  • $1B Powerball Is Minting Social Media Gold

    [ad_1]

Powerball just hit a billion dollars, and people are freaking out about it.

For 39 draws in a row, no ticket matched all six numbers for the Powerball jackpot. The last draw was on Saturday night.

Now, for the next drawing on Labor Day, the jackpot has snowballed to $1.1 billion and will be the game’s fifth-largest prize ever, according to a statement from the lottery. The largest jackpot prize ever was cashed out in November 2022 by Edwin Castro, a California man who scored a $2.04 billion dollar drawing.

The five winning numbers will be announced just after 11 p.m. ET on Monday after a drawing broadcast live from the Florida Lottery drawing studios in Tallahassee.

The winner will have the option to get the full $1.1 billion as a 30-year graduated annuity or get a one-time lump sum cash payment of $498.4 million. Most winners opt for the latter option.

The prize is then subject to substantial taxes, that include an automatic withholding tax of 24% and more in federal and state taxes come next tax season. But winners in some states —California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming— are exempt from state taxes.

Monday night’s drawing will be the 40th since the last jackpot worth $204.5 million was won on May 31, 2025 by someone in California. There have been three more jackpot winners so far in 2025 besides the winner in May, three lucky winners from Oregon, Kentucky, and another from California.

The odds of winning the jackpot are one in 292.2 million, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association.

Here are some of our favorites

    How to play the Powerball

Powerball tickets cost $2 a piece and are sold in 45 states, plus Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You can buy them from local convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores, some airport terminals and even online in some states like Arizona, Massachusetts, and New York.

Then, you pick six numbers on your ticket —five white balls numbered 1 to 69 and one red Powerball numbered 1 to 26. You have to use a black or blue pen or a pencil to do so. If you can’t pick them yourself, you can ask for a “Quick Pick Powerball ticket,” and a computer will generate random numbers for you.

Then you hand in your play slip to the retailer or lottery vending machines to receive a ticket and you are all set for the results.

Come Monday night, you can tune in to the livestream drawing on the official lottery website to watch the numbers roll in. If you match all five white balls in any order, and the red Powerball, you win the mega prize.

People don’t just play for the jackpot

The winning numbers for Saturday night were 3-18-22-27-33 and the Powerball 17, but no winner matched all those numbers to hit the jackpot.

But if you don’t win jackpot on Monday you can still win smaller prizes. For those, some people also add a “Power Play,” an additional multiplier for $1 which can increase your non-jackpot winnings anywhere from 2x to 10x.

On Saturday night’s drawing, there were three $2 million winners in Colorado, Indiana and New Hampshire, and nine $1 million winners in Florida, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and California.

Why the jackpot became so big

A number of factors go into the estimated value of a ticket price. Ultimately, it’s determined by basic gambling rules, and the number of how many tickets are purchased nationwide. The more tickets purchased means a higher jackpot pay but also lower odds of winning.

Odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are very, very low. Which is also what hikes the price up. When a jackpot drawing does not match any ticket, the prize increases for the next drawing as more people continue to buy tickets.

If no ticket matches all six numbers on Monday, the Powerball jackpot will increase yet again as it goes on to a 40th drawing on Wednesday night.

The longest ever Powerball jackpot run was for 42 consecutive drawings, which ended in a $1.326 billion win for an Oregon player on April 6, 2024.

  • Powerball jackpot soars to $1.1 billion on Labor Day after no winner in Saturday’s drawing

    [ad_1]

(CNN) — The Powerball jackpot has surged to an estimated $1.1 billion after no ticket matched all six numbers in Saturday’s drawing, according to a news release from the Multi-State Lottery Association.

Monday’s Labor Day jackpot will be the fifth-largest prize in the game’s history, the agency noted.

Saturday night’s winning numbers were white balls 3, 18, 22, 27, 33, and red Powerball 17, with a Power Play multiplier of 3.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, the association said.

If a player wins Monday, they can choose between the $1.1 billion annuity or a one-time payment of nearly half a billion dollars, both before taxes.

“America has waited all year for the chance to play for a billion-dollar jackpot,” said Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO.

In the first case, winners will be paid over 30 years, with one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year. If the winner chooses a lump sum, they will receive $498.4 million, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the game.

Monday’s drawing will be the 40th since the jackpot was last won on May 31 in California.

The largest Powerball jackpot on record was a $2.04 billion prize won in California on November 7, 2022.

The longest Powerball run without a winner is 42 consecutive drawings, set in April 2024.

Powerball tickets cost $2 and are sold in 45 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Powerball numbers drawn for Saturday’s $1 billion jackpot

The Powerball jackpot has risen to an estimated $1.1 billion, the fifth-largest ever in the game’s history, after there were no winners in Saturday night’s $1 billion grand prize.

Saturday’s winning numbers were 3, 18, 22, 27 and 33, with a Powerball of 17. There were nine tickets that matched all five white balls to win $1 million, but no ticket matched all six.

The $1.1 billion jackpot for Monday night’s drawing has an estimated cash value of $498.4 million.

Based on the jackpot estimate, a single jackpot winner Monday would have the choice of taking a lump sum payment of $498.4 million before taxes, or going with the annuity option, which would consist of one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year, also before taxes.

Saturday’s drawing marked the sixth time in the game’s 33-year history that the top prize has climbed to the billion-dollar mark.

No one has won Powerball’s jackpot since May 31, when a single ticket in California won a $204.5 million jackpot with a cash value of $91.6 million.

Four of the five previous billion-plus-jackpot-winning tickets were sold in California, including a single ticket sold in Altadena in 2022 that claimed a $2.04 billion jackpot, the largest in both Powerball and lottery history.

The next drawing, which takes place from the Florida Lottery live draw studio in Tallahassee, is on Monday at 11 p.m. ET. Tickets are $2 and are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

    Lottery fever is spiking!

Will a $2 Powerball ticket make you a billionaire? As they say in the lottery business, “it could happen to you.”

After no one matched all five numbers plus the Powerball in the Wednesday, Aug. 27, Powerball drawing, the grand prize jumped $100 million overnight. Ticket sales ahead of the Saturday, Aug. 30, draw pushed the total into record numbers: The Powerball grand prize rose from $750 million with a cash option of $338.6 million on Monday, Aug. 25, to an $850 million grand prize or a cash option of $383.7 million for Wednesday. Then it spiked to $950 million early Thursday, hours after the Aug. 27 drawing. On Friday, Aug. 29, a day before the Aug. 30 drawing, the jackpot rose to a whopping $1 billion. The total is now in the Top 10 biggest Powerball lottery jackpots of all-time (see below).

The latter were bought in Arizona, New York and Virginia.

In case you’re wondering, Monday, Aug. 25, winning Powerball numbers were 16-19-34-37-64 and the Powerball was 22. Power Play was 3x. Those numbers produced a rollover, but it wasn’t all bad news: A pair of tickets from Georgia and Texas matched five numbers to nab $1 million.

    The winning numbers for an estimated $850 million Powerball jackpot — the game’s sixth-largest prize ever — are 9, 12, 22, 41, 61 with a Powerball of 25.

Wednesday’s jackpot has an estimated cash value of $383.7 million, Powerball said

It was not immediately known if there were any winners of Wednesday night’s jackpot.

“Powerball ticket sales have doubled in the past week, as more players join the fun with a $2 ticket, while also giving back to good causes in their communities,” said Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group chair and Iowa Lottery CEO.

There were no winning tickets sold for Monday night’s $750 million grand prize, Powerball’s 10th largest when it was up for grabs.

A single jackpot winner would have the choice of taking a lump sum payment estimated at $383.7 million (before taxes) or opting for a payout via an annuity, which would consist of one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.

No one has won Powerball’s jackpot since May 31, when a single ticket in California claimed a $204.5 million jackpot with a cash value of $91.6 million.

The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 292.2 million, according to Powerball. Drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 11 p.m. ET.

In 2022, a single ticket sold in Altadena, California, claimed a $2.04 billion jackpot, the largest in both Powerball and lottery history. The first Powerball drawing was in 1992.

Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

    How to play the Powerball

To play the Powerball, you have to buy a ticket for $2. You can do this at a variety of locations, including your local convenience store, gas station, or grocery store. In some states, Powerball tickets can be bought online.

Once you have your ticket, you need to pick six numbers. Five of them will be white balls with numbers from 1 to 69. The red Powerball ranges from 1 to 26. People can also add a “Power Play” for $1, which increases the winning for all non-jackpot prizes.

The “Power Play” multiplier can multiply winnings by: 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or 10X.

If you are feeling unlucky or want the computer to do the work for you, the “Quick Pick” option is available, where computer-generated numbers will be printed on a Powerball ticket. To win the jackpot, players must match all five white balls in any order and the red Powerball.

Powerball drawings are held on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights. If no one wins the jackpot, the cash prize will continue to tick up.

    Where to buy lottery tickets

Tickets can be purchased in person at gas stations, convenience stores and grocery stores. Some airport terminals may also sell lottery tickets.

A single Powerball ticket costs $2. Pay an additional $1 to add the Power Play for a chance to multiply all Powerball winnings except for the jackpot. Players can also add the Double Play for an additional $1 to have a second chance at winning $10 million.

    How to play the Powerball

To play, select five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls, then select one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball.

You can choose your lucky numbers on a play slip or let the lottery terminal randomly pick your numbers.

To win, match one of the 9 Ways to Win:

    • 5 white balls + 1 red Powerball = Grand prize.

    • 5 white balls = $1 million.

    • 4 white balls + 1 red Powerball = $50,000.

    • 3 white balls + 1 red Powerball = $100.

    • 2 white balls + 1 red Powerball = $7.

    • 1 white ball + 1 red Powerball = $4.

There’s a chance to have your winnings increased two, three, four, five and 10 times through the Power Play for an additional $1 per play. Players can multiply non-jackpot wins up to 10 times when the jackpot is $150 million or less.

All prizes are set cash amounts, except for the Grand Prize. In California, prize payout amounts are pari-mutuel, meaning it’s determined by the sales and the number of winners.

  • Powerball winning numbers drawn in $750 million jackpot, game’s 10th largest grand prize

Powerball jackpot climbs to $750 million

Powerball jackpot climbs to $750 million, 10th largest in history

    01:50

Time to test your luck. The latest Powerball jackpot up for grabs is an estimated $750 million, the game’s 10th largest grand prize in its history.

The winning numbers drawn Monday night were 16, 19, 34, 37 and 64, with a Powerball of 22.

The grand prize has an estimated cash value of $338.6 million, Powerball said.

A single jackpot winner would have the choice of taking a lump sum payment of about $338.6 million (before taxes), or opting for an annuity option, which consists of one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.

There hasn’t been a Powerball jackpot winner since May 31, when a single ticket in California won a $204.5 million jackpot with a cash value of $91.6 million.

A single ticket sold in Altadena, California, in 2022 claimed a $2.04 billion jackpot, the largest in both Powerball and lottery history. The first Powerball drawing was in 1992.

The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 292.2 million, according to Powerball.

Drawings take place at 11 p.m. ET every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, and the jackpot increases if there’s no grand prize winner.

Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and cost $2 each.
