Powerball winning numbers announced for estimated $1.8 billion jackpot

The winning numbers for an estimated $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot — the game’s second-largest prize ever — are 11, 23, 44, 61, 62 with a Powerball of 17.

Saturday’s jackpot has an estimated cash value of $826.4 million, Powerball said.

It was not immediately known if there were any winners of Saturday’s jackpot.

The top prize had climbed after no winning tickets were sold for Wednesday night’s $1.4 billion grand prize. There have been six jackpots of more than $1 billion in Powerball’s 33-year history.

“We encourage everyone to play responsibly and take pride in knowing that every $2 ticket also helps support good causes in their community,” said Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO.

Jackpots rise as more and more tickets are sold as drawings approach, and the previous current holder of fourth place is a $1.326 billion jackpot won in Oregon in April 2024.

A single jackpot winner would have the choice of taking a lump sum payment estimated at $826.4 million or opting for a payout via an annuity, which would consist of one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year.

No one has won Powerball’s jackpot since May 31, when a single ticket in California claimed a $204.5 million jackpot with a cash value of $91.6 million. So far this year, the jackpot has been hit four times.

The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 292.2 million, according to Powerball. Drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 11 p.m. ET.

In 2022, a single ticket sold in Altadena, California, claimed a $2.04 billion jackpot, the largest in both Powerball and lottery history. The first Powerball drawing was in 1992.

If a single ticket wins this Saturday’s jackpot, its purchaser would get to choose between an annuity-tied estimated $1.8 billion or the lump sum payment of roughly $826.4 million, known as the cash value. If a winner picks the annuity option, they would get an immediate payment followed by 29 annual ones that increase by 5% each year.

Lottery spending is growing. Residents shell out the most in these states.

The Powerball jackpot has swelled to an estimated $1.8 billion, as Americans continue to take a shot at bringing home the top prize. But some states have a larger share of participants than others.

Massachusetts leads the way in lottery spending, according to a LendingTree analysis of government data. Residents there shell out an average of $915 a year on tickets they hope will earn them big bucks. Rhode Island residents come in second, spending $573 annually.

North Dakotans are perhaps the most realistic about their chances of winning. They spent just $50 on lottery tickets in 2023, the lowest of any other state.

But that may be because lottery tickets are harder to access there, according to LendingTree’s chief consumer finance analyst Matt Schulz, who noted that people in urban areas have more opportunities to purchase lottery tickets than those in rural areas.

“It’s easier to go to a convenience store and pick up a lotto ticket in Massachusetts or New York than it is in North Dakota,” he told CBS MoneyWatch. “Some of it might just be about opportunity.”

Source of revenue

Lottery spending can generate a substantial amount of revenue in participating states. On average it accounts for about 1% of a state’s general revenue. That figure rises to 3% in Rhode Island, South Dakota and West Virginia, according to the LendingTree’s analysis. In Florida, lottery sales make up 2% of the state’s revenue.

“That shows how significant these programs are for these states,” Schulz said. “Imagine if something were to happen and suddenly 3% of a state’s revenue just disappeared.”

While the odds of winning are next-to-none, a prize-winning ticket can be life-changing. In 2023, Americans spent an average of $320 on lottery tickets, up about 4% from 2022, according to LendingTree.

Saturday’s jackpot — now worth about $826.4 million if taken in a lump-sum cash payout — is the second-largest prize in U.S. lottery history, according to Powerball. The record jackpot of $2.04 billion was won on Nov. 7, 2022.

Powerball winners can opt for potentially

With the Powerball jackpot now an estimated $1.8 billion for Saturday night’s drawing, there’s lottery fever in the air. If you’re the lucky one whose $2 ticket ends up worth millions, what do you do with all that money?

Jackpot winners have the option to either take a lump sum payment of the estimated cash value — in this case, roughly $826.4 million — or they can opt to receive their prize as an annuity, paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years. In either case, those totals are before the Internal Revenue Service takes a cut, as do most states.

Should you take a lump sum payment or annuity option?

Dan Geltrude, a certified public accountant in New Jersey, told CBS News: “I personally would take the lump sum payment because I feel comfortable in how I can invest my money. However, having that much money for a lot of people is dangerous.”

A financial windfall this big has the potential to change your lifestyle in significant ways, especially if you take the lump sum payment — and Geltrude says people do “simply overspend, even with that kind of money.”

He notes many lottery winners over the years have ended up going broke.

If you opt for the annuity payment, “it will take you a while to lose all that money, so that’s the safe bet,” Geltrude said.

“But when you factor in the tax man, and the tax man is both federal and state, you only end up netting, if you’re in a high-tax state like New York or New Jersey, only about $400 million,” he said.

What should you do with your Powerball jackpot money?

Money can’t buy love, “but it’ll buy you a lot of friends,” Geltrude said, making you “a magnet for everybody that’s going to be asking you for money.”

So, what to do if you find yourself millions of dollars richer come Sunday morning?

“Do not tell a soul that you won. You need to keep this quiet,” Geltrude said. Sign the ticket, put it in a safe place, and keep it on the down-low. You’ll want to seek out an attorney, a certified public accountant and a financial adviser, Geltrude said.

As far as your plan for your money, Geltrude’s advice isn’t flashy: Start by paying off all your debts.

“You want to get back to even,” he said. “Now you have a bunch of money to figure out what it is that will make you happy.”

The Powerball jackpot has jumped to an eye-popping $1.7 billion, after yet another drawing passed without a big winner Wednesday.

The numbers selected were: 3, 16, 29, 61 and 69, with the Powerball number being 22.

Since May 31, there have been 41 straight drawings without a big winner.

The next drawing will be Saturday night, with the prize expected to be the third-largest in U.S. lottery history.

Powerball’s terrible odds of 1 in 292.2 million are designed to generate big jackpots, with prizes becoming ever larger as they repeatedly roll over when no one wins. Lottery officials note that the odds are far better for the game’s many smaller prizes. There are three drawings each week.

The estimated $1.4 billion jackpot from Wednesday night’s drawing would have been for a winner who had opted to receive 30 payments over 29 years through an annuity. Winners almost always choose the game’s cash option, which would have been an estimated $634.3 million.

The cash option for Saturday night’s drawing is an estimated $770.3 million.

Powerball tickets cost $2 and the game is offered in 45 states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Five Powerball tickets hit big in Washington. Here’s where they were sold

Five Powerball tickets sold in Washington were big winners despite missing the $1.44 billion jackpot, lottery officials said.

Three tickets matched four numbers and the Powerball, winning $50,000 in the Sept. 3 drawing, according to Washington’s Lottery. Another two tickets also had the Power Play add-on, bringing their winnings to $100,000, lottery officials said.

Nationwide, tickets won millions in prizes in the drawing, although no one took home the grand prize, McClatchy News reported.

The next drawing is Sept. 6, with an estimated $1.7 billion jackpot, the national Powerball website said.

Where were the winning Washington tickets sold?

Both of Washington’s $100,000 tickets were sold at Fred Meyer locations, according to lottery officials.

Powerball tickets sold in Michigan, Oregon, Texas and Wyoming matched five winning numbers and the Power Play multiplier to win $2 million each in the Wednesday, Sept. 3 drawing, the national Powerball site said.

Tickets sold in Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania matched five winning numbers but not the Powerball to win $1 million each. Two players in California, which adjusts lottery prize amounts based on the number of tickets sold and number of winners, won $984,000 each, the California Lottery said.

More than 6.3 million other Powerball tickets sold in the United States also won prizes ranging from $4 to $200, McClatchy News reported.

When is the next Powerball drawing?

Since the grand prize wasn’t won, it now increases to an estimated $1.7 billion, with a cash value of about $770.3 million, for the next drawing Saturday, Sept. 6, according to the national Powerball site.

Tickets are sold on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

No one claimed Powerball’s grand prize, but 11 Pa. winners won a combined $2.4M

No one won the $1.7 billion grand prize in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing.

But, some Pennsylvania residents could be a little bit richer today.

Lottery officials announced that 11 winning tickets in the most recent Powerball drawing were sold in Pennsylvania for a total of $2.4 million in prizes.

Officials said the prizes broke down like this:

One prize worth $1 million sold in Allegheny County
One prize worth $500,000 sold in Centre County
Nine prizes worth $100,000 sold in various parts of the Commonwealth

The $1 million winning ticket was sold by Center Independent Oil, located at 1980 Painters Run Road, in Scott Township, Allegheny County.

That ticket, lottery officials said, matched five of the five white balls drawn, 3-16-29-61-69, to win $1 million.

The retailer will earn a $5,000 bonus for selling the ticket.

Lottery officials also said GIANT Food Stores, located at 2121 South Atherton St., College Township, in Centre County, sold a $500,000-winning Powerball with Double Play ticket.

The retailer will earn a $500 bonus for selling that ticket, lottery officials said.

The retailers who sold the winning $100,000 tickets will each earn a $500 bonus. They are:

C.J. Lee’s Food Market, 4716 Greene St. in Philadelphia
New Memphis Market, 2327 East Huntingdon St., Philadelphia
Wawa, 3710 Lincoln Highway, Caln Township, Chester County;

Turkey Hill, 2060 Good Hope Road, Hampden Township, Cumberland County;
Turkey Hill, 2130 South Market St., Upper Allen Township, Cumberland County; and
Giant Eagle, 223 Grove City Road, Slippery Rock Boro, Butler County.

A final winner in Pa. purchased a ticket online.

In Pennsylvania the recent jackpot run has generated more than $105 million in sales, creating a profit of more than $42 million to benefit older Pennsylvanians, lottery officials said in a statement.

The last time a Powerball jackpot was won in Pennsylvania was on August 12, 2024.

With the 4th largest jackpot in the Powerball game up for grabs and sixth largest among U.S. lottery jackpot games Bobby & Steve’s was buzzing.

“I am feeling lucky today hopefully I will be vanishing onto a private island,” said Tara Eck.

Dreams varied from exciting splurges to meaningful donations.

Hundreds of people walked in buying possibilities big ones. Shelling out anywhere from just $2 dollars to more than $200 worth of Powerball tickets.

The goal is to beat the 1 in 292 million odds.

“It only takes one ticket to win dream about what you’re going to do when you win billion dollars and if you don’t win know that money is going to a good cause,” said Adam Prock, Minnesota Lottery Executive Director.

Especially when the estimated cash value is more than $630 million. The states most expensive home is a Lake Minnetonka mansion priced at a whopping $68 million. The jackpot could buy you 11 of those.

The Minnesota lottery has generated $4 billion for state programs since it began in 1990.

Winning numbers announced for estimated $1.4 billion Powerball jackpot

The winning numbers for Wednesday’s drawing in the estimated $1.4 billion Powerball jackpot — the game’s fourth-largest prize ever — have been announced. They are 3, 16, 29, 61 and 69, with a Powerball of 22.

The jackpot has an estimated cash value of $634.3 million before taxes, Powerball said.

It was not immediately known if there were any winners.

A single jackpot winner would have the choice of taking a lump sum payment estimated at $634.3 million, before taxes, or opting for a payout via an annuity, which would consist of one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year, also before taxes.

There were no winning tickets sold for Monday night’s $1.2 billion grand prize. There have been six jackpots of more than $1 billion in Powerball’s 33-year history.

Jackpots rise as more tickets are sold when drawings approach. Wednesday’s jackpot, which is also the sixth-largest in lottery history, surpasses a $1.326 billion jackpot that was won in Oregon in April 2024.

“Tonight could be the night this billion-dollar Powerball jackpot is won!” Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group chair and Iowa Lottery CEO, said in a statement Wednesday. “Players are excited to take another shot at this growing jackpot, but we encourage everyone to play responsibly. It only takes one $2 ticket to win — all while supporting good causes in your community.”

No one has won Powerball’s grand prize since May 31, when a single ticket in California claimed a $204.5 million jackpot with a cash value of $91.6 million. So far this year, the jackpot has been hit four times.

The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 292.2 million, according to Powerball. Drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 11 p.m. ET.

In 2022, a single ticket sold in Altadena, California, claimed a $2.04 billion jackpot, the largest in both Powerball and lottery history. The first Powerball drawing was in 1992.

Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $1.4 billion after no one hit the top prize in Monday night’s drawing. Players will get another shot on Wednesday at 10:59 p.m. ET.

At this size, it’s the fifth-largest jackpot in Powerball history, with an estimated cash value of $634.3 million. The record jackpot was $2.04 billion, won on Nov. 7, 2022, according to Powerball.

The CBS News data team looked into Powerball data to see where winners take home the most and least, how often numbers are drawn, and the timing and size of every jackpot so far this year.

Here’s how the numbers break down:

What are the odds?

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, according to Powerball. The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9.

Wednesday’s drawing will be the 41st since the jackpot was last claimed in California on May 31. So far this year, the jackpot has been hit four times.

The best and worst states to win Powerball

Powerball jackpot winners may choose to receive their prize as an annuity, paid in 30 graduated payments over 29 years, or a lump-sum payment.

Whatever option you choose, the Internal Revenue Service takes a cut — and most states do, too.

Federal law requires a 24% withholding on lottery winnings over $5,000, with an additional 14.6% due at tax time, bringing the total federal tax to about 37%. On top of that, many states levy their own income tax on winnings, which can range from a few percent to more than 10%, while a handful of states don’t tax lottery prizes at all.

CBS News looked at each state to see where a jackpot winner could take home the most — and the least — after taxes.

States including California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax lottery prizes. A winner of the current jackpot in these states could receive $820 million across 30 payments, or $371 million as a lump sum, after federal taxes, according to data from USA Mega.

In states with higher taxes, the total yearly payments would add up to less in states with higher taxes. For example, a winner in Minnesota would receive about $692 million, followed by Oregon, $691,589,400; New Jersey, $680,539,380; Washington, D.C., $680,539,380 and New York, $678,589,380, which has the lowest after-tax annuitized payout.

Alaska, Alabama, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah do not have Powerball.

Hot and cold numbers

Players choose five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26.

In the last 100 draws, the most frequently drawn Powerballs were 2, 5, 9, 20 and 25, according to data from USA Mega. Among the white balls, 4, 23, 28, 40 and 52 appeared most often.

Some numbers have yet to appear, including Powerballs 16 and 26. All white balls have appeared at least once throughout the last 100 drawings, though 26 has been drawn only a single time.

While each drawing is random, the tables below show which numbers have appeared most, and least, often.

The Powerball jackpot has climbed to a staggering $1.3 billion after no one matched all the winning numbers Monday night.

This is the fifth largest prize in Powerball history. The lump sum payment is about $589 million before taxes.

At Tenley Market Liquor on Wisconsin Avenue, Powerball players told WTOP how they would spend the money if they won.

Plenty of people were dreaming about big-ticket items, including cars, houses and vacations. But most said they’d be generous and use the money to support their families, neighborhoods and nonprofit organizations.

Robin Champion of Northwest D.C. said she’s won the lottery before and she’s ready to do it again.

“I won $50,000. So once you have a feeling that you can win … I have that feeling again,” Champion said. “I am going to affirm that I’m going to be the next billionaire.”

Another man in the store told WTOP he’d “probably buy a new car, a house and travel.”

With her winnings, Champion plans to buy a condominium, help her family and give money to charity.

“I play because I want to be a winner,” Champion said. “Buy a $2, $3 ticket, put it under your pillow, and dream. Because someone’s going to win it.”

The odds of matching all six numbers is about 1 in 292 million. You’re more likely to get struck by lightning.

Two New Jersey lottery players win $1 million as Powerball jackpot hits $1.3 billion

Two Powerball tickets sold in New Jersey were among a dozen tickets nationwide that just missed a billion-dollar jackpot in Monday night’s drawing.

In all, 12 tickets matched all five white balls to win million-dollar prizes, but no one hit the jackpot.

The Powerball will now climb to an estimated $1.3 billion with a cash option of $589 million for the next drawing on Wednesday, Sept. 3, according to the Powerball website.

The jackpot will be the fifth largest Powerball ever and the ninth largest in U.S. lottery history (see the lists below).

The jackpot was last won on May 31 when a California lottery player won $204.5 million Powerball jackpot.

The major lotteries in the United States offer two jackpot payout options: annuity and cash.

The annuity option is paid out over time. There is an immediate payment and then 29 annual payments after that, increasing by 5% each year.

The cash option is significantly lower than the advertised jackpot, but it is paid in a lump sum. You don’t have to wait decades for all the money.
