This Week on POPSUGAR Rush: The 1st Annual POPSUGAR Rush Awards – POPSUGAR Australia

At the time of writing, there are just 39 days left until 2024. Gagged. Gooped. Gooned. It has truly been a wild year for pop culture, and it has been an honour to cover the latter third of it on the very first season of POPSUGAR Rush. Starr and I have enjoyed nothing more than sitting down each week and having a chinwag about the weird nooks and crannies of reality TV, streaming and celebrity that you’re too nervous to do yourself — and in bite-sized deliciousness. Where else would you have learned about when Robbie Williams couldn’t trust a fart, or P!nk’s least favourite song of hers being “We’ve Got Scurvy”? You’re welcome.

But, this week marks the final episode of POPSUGAR Rush’s first-ever season. Instead of wallowing in our collective sadness, Starr and I put our little heads together and conjured the best possible send-off: the inaugural POPSUGAR Rush awards!

Yes, seven categories dedicated to those pop culture moments that made us laugh, cry and sh*rt throughout the year. These are not your typical categories, either. We wanted to get into the nitty-gritty, rewarding only those moments that really deserve it. The categories of the 1st ever-POPSUGAR Rush Awards are:

    • Jawbreaker of the Year
    • Best Taylor Swift Moment That We Didn’t Already Discuss on POPSUGAR Rush
    • Best Australian Streaming Serve
    • Nepo Baby of the Year
    • Best Couple That Survived Divorce-a-geddon
    • Rush of the Year

You’ll have to tune into POPSUGAR Rush to find out the nominees and winners in full. But, for now, here’s a breakdown of some of the moments that truly made pop culture in 2023

The Biggest Pop Culture Moments of 2023

    Ariana DeBose’s BAFTA Rap

One rap to rule them all, celebrating the best in acting performances from 2022. After being memed to death and back, one thing is for certain: Angela Bassett did the thing.

    Barbenheimer

He was a scientist who was responsible for creating one of the most devastating weapons of mass destruction in history. She was a doll who wanted to be a real girl. They both pondered what it means to be human. Can I make it any more obvious?

The release of Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day caused a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Barbie became one of the highest-grossing films of all time, and Oppenheimer — a 3-hour, historical biopic — found an audience it never intended to and has almost grossed $1 billion at the global box office. We owe Barbenheimer so much.

    Divorceageddon

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Jackman. Britney Spears and Sam Asghari. Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello. Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez. It seemed like no celebrity couple was spared (unless you’re Posh and Becks or Bey and Jay-Z, be safe out there).

The Eras Tour and The Renaissance Tour

Leave it to the two biggest musicians in the world to help revive stadium touring in a bigger way than either of them could have predicted. Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were already legends, but now, they’re essentially deities.

    Scandoval

You don’t even have to be a Vanderpump Rules fan to know all about Scandoval. When it was revealed that Tom Sandoval cheated on his girlfriend of a decade, Ariana Madix, with her best friend, Raquel Leviss, and the Internet was never the same.

This Week on POPSUGAR Rush: Troye Sivan vs. Kylie Minogue – POPSUGAR Australia

I never expect great Aussie representation at major overseas award shows. Sometimes it feels like the (great!) art that is produced within our borders never really extends beyond them. There are a few exceptions, obviously: The Kid LAROI, Muriel’s Wedding, and that man who barked like a rabid dog on the news just to name a few. But, in the year 2023, it’s all about two Aussie pop superstars: Kylie Minogue and Troye Sivan. And, like everyone else in Australia, we at POPSUGAR Rush love them both.

Despite the almost 30 years between them, both are making waves in pop in 2023. On one corner, we have Kylie, a bonafide music legend who has become deified not only in Australia but worldwide and has been making hits since before Troye was even alive, including her 2023 viral smash “Padam Padam”. Then, we have Troye, who is proving himself to have a uniquely refreshing take on pop music and hit his stride this year thanks to his hit “Rush”.

Imagine our delight when we learn that both Troye and Kylie are up for Grammys this year, and are in fact competing against each other in the same category — best pop dance recording.

Will Troye Sivan or Kylie Minogue Win a Grammy?

I took to my Twitter account — I don’t recognise any other name for that website — and polled on which song people thought should win the award.

    Neck. and. neck.

In fact, even Starr and I couldn’t agree. She’s team “Rush”, and I’m team “Padam.” We love healthy disagreements!

But what are the actual odds of either of them winning? Well, even if Kylie loses this one, she still has a shiny Grammy award on her mantlepiece thanks to winning an award for the iconic “Come Into My World” way back in 2004 — Troye was six years old at the time. This year, Kylie also only has one nomination this year, which means she’s statistically got less chance of taking an award home.

Troye Sivan, however, is up for two Grammys in the aforementioned category and, also, for best music video. And his odds of taking both home are actually pretty high. His only real competition is Miss Minogue in the best pop dance recording category, and Billie Eilish in the best music video category. Keep in mind, the Grammys really, really love Billie Eilish — she’s won seven out of 19 nominations since 2020, and that’s not including the six more nominations she has this year. But who is she to destroy our Australian pride in our own artists? Try it, Billie!

I’m still rooting for Kylie, but I won’t be mad if Troye takes it home over her. Maybe now he won’t swerve us next time we’re on the red carpet with him!

Besides Aussie pop icons, this week on POPSUGAR Rush also saw discussions around:

    • Timothée Chalamet and boygenius inexplicably impersonating Troye on SNL
    • The life and times of your mum’s fave, Robbie Williams
    • David Fincher’s new movie, The Killer, and what it could’ve been
    • The Fab Five now becoming a Fab Four, thanks to Bobby Berk
    • Travis Barker’s audacity to be drumming while Kourtney was in labour
    • and Kevin Bacon
