    Jonathan Bailey just made sure this week ended on a good note by letting his fans in on a soft launch for a popcorn bucket. Wicked: For Good’s official account posted the charming actor teasing the viewer. After beckoning them closer, Bailey reveals what we’ve all been waiting for… the Wicked: For Good popcorn bucket? Yeah it’s a startling shade of emerald green, and it’s going to look pretty great on your burgeoning shelf of popcorn buckets. Some people might have been a little disappointed by the reveal. But, then Mr. Bailey tried some of that popcorn and I forgave that cute clarinet player on the spot.

    The one Bailey is holding in the new promo is the AMC Theatres edition of the popcorn bucket. There are multiple different variations, so listen up! An Emerald City popcorn bucket is our headliner. This is the snazzy green number that Fiyero himself cradles in the clip. From there, We’ve got a Glinda light up popcorn bucket. It’s shaped like the iconic pink bubble she’s still trying to get the hang of in the Wicked: For Good trailer. Come on, it lights up! How can we resist?

    Of course, there have to be Glinda and Elphaba popcorn tins. AMC will also have cups that match those tins. So, there’s a full-court press. Check out the popcorn vessels shaped like the Grimmoire! You knew the marketing on this one would be absolutely staggering and that has borne itself out.

    Wicked: For Good brings us new popcorn buckets

    Anywhere you look online, there’s some enthusiasm surrounding Wicked: For Good. It’s been a pop-culture force from the moment the press tour for the first movie ramped up. There’s an undercurrent of something so timely in this movie’s rise to social media prominence. Director Jon Chu isn’t surprised that people are flocking to the sequel. He talked to Deadline about why Wicked: For Good is speaking to so many folks out there.

    “And the movie was always about our adult selves looking at our children’s stories and wondering, do we still believe in those things, happily ever after or any of that. And so that’s the power of a timeless story. That’s why The Wizard of Oz has lasted for so long. That’s why Wicked has lasted for so long,” Chu argues. 

    “They tap into something that can feel timely at any time. And hopefully, it’s about humanity, the cycles of humanity. Unfortunately, we are in a cycle that mirrors this,” he continued. “And so it’s more important than ever in a weird way, that that’s the power of movies that we can see ourselves…who are we going to be? Who are we going to choose to be and what do we stand for?”

    While we answer that pressing question, I’m going to have some popcorn in the meantime.

    The popcorn bucket wars just became literal with Cinemark’s latest entry for Gladiator II. The theater chain’s new entry is not only shaped like the Roman colosseum, it plays a cutesy augmented reality gladiator battle when you point your smartphone at QR code on the bottom (AR-ENA, get it?). The butter on the popcorn is Cinemark’s tagline, claiming “you can eat war.”

    In fact, all of the ad copy is brilliantly cheesy: “Every kernel of strength, every ounce of honor, is for the glory of Rome. As you preside over this gladiator arena, you can… eat war. Finish the popcorn and unleash the battle within. You will be entertained.” Being intoned in the Honest Trailer style takes it up an extra notch.

    It’s the latest popcorn bucket movie merch, following high-profile entries from Dune and Deadpool. We’ve also seen entries for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and others that didn’t quite capture the same zeitgeist.

    Sure, you might need to wipe off some popcorn grease to read the Cinemark bucket’s QR code, and the AR animation of two fighting gladiators is reminiscent of a PlayStation 2 render. Still, neither the Dune nor Wolverine buckets boast any interactive features, so the Gladiator II bucket has them beat there — and it’s a smart way to rope in the tech press.

    Cinemark’s vessel is also plausibly shaped like a popcorn bucket with its colosseum form. The same can’t be said for Dune‘s sandworm-shaped bucket or Deadpool’s Wolverine head bucket (Dune director Denis Villeneuve called the latter “horrific” and he’s right). If you’re looking to expand your collection, the Gladiator II popcorn bucket will arrive “soon” and the movie itself hits theaters on November 22.

    No modern blockbuster is complete with its very own popcorn bucket. It’s a trend that’s been happening for a few years but rose to viral levels when Dune: Part Two released one that, well, looked like a sex toy. Since then, the popcorn bucket wars have taken theatergoers on all types of adventures and now the latest one, for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, is adding a whole new element.

    Coming exclusively to Cinemark theaters, the Gladiator II popcorn bucket isn’t just a popcorn bucket shaped like the Roman Colosseum at the center of the franchise. It also has an AR element that allows you to watch an actual battle happen inside the Colosseum itself… just hopefully not while you are still in the theater.

    You can watch a little example below from the Gladiator II social media account.

    So the idea here is you order the Gladiator II popcorn bucket, finish the popcorn, then after the movie scan the AR code and watch the battle. Which, we have to admit, is not a bad idea. It does promote phone use with something you can only buy through a movie theater, which isn’t great, but the idea of extending the story out of the theater is a good one. Plus, in terms of actual popcorn receptacles, the Colosseum is one of the better-shaped buckets yet. Plus it is decidedly asexual, which we can’t say about every popcorn bucket released this year.

    Overall though, what the 2024 popcorn bucket wars—with such films as Dune: Part Two and Deadpool & Wolverine, but also Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Terrifier 3, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and others—have done is given people another reason to go to the movies. Not only do you get bigger screeners and better sound, but now you can get collectibles too and that’s a smart add.

    One thing that might stand out in the case of Gladiator II though is the subject matter. All the other films mentioned below were sci-fi, fantasy, and blockbuster fare. Gladiator II certainly has blockbuster potential but it’s much more of an awards-bait drama than anything else. Will audiences who show up to see Gladiator II care about this popcorn bucket or even its AR evolution? Will they even know what AR is? It just seems like an odd pairing of forward-thinking with a safe sequel.

    The Gladiator II popcorn bucket will be available soon. Keep an eye on Cinemark’s social media. Gladiator II is in theaters on November 22.
