  • Exclusive Interview: Dylan Espeseth On His New Single, ‘Thoughts,’ And Opening For The Rocket Summer!

If you have not heard of Dylan Espeseth, then we have a treat for you! Dylan is an alt-emo songwriter who embodies the perfect blend of the current emo scene and the golden era of emo from the early 2000s. Fresh off playing a few shows in LA with The Rocket Summer, we got to sit with Dylan to learn more about him as a songwriter and his newest single, ‘Thoughts.’

So without further ado, let’s get into the interview!

Hi Dylan! Thank you so much for speaking with us today! For our first question, we like to give you a chance to introduce yourself to the THP readers.
Hey! I’m Dylan Espeseth. I’m from Seattle, and I’m a songwriter and musician who mostly just writes songs about what I’m feeling.

You just recently came off playing a few shows with The Rocket Summer. As massive fans of TRS, what was your favorite moment from that tour?
That whole experience was so incredible. The most notable thing for me was probably the absolute masterclass of a performance from TRS. Watching the way that Bryce was able to have such presence and command of the stage, even in moments where he was alone on the stage with just an acoustic guitar, the energy was incredible. I could feel the genuine passion and emotion radiating off of everyone in the room.

Is there anything that you have learned now that you are home?
Being home, I think, has really cemented in me the importance of live music. Going from playing my songs to a room full of people, back to writing alone in my room has really shown me why live music is so powerful. It feels like a case of ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder,’ where now that there’s nobody around for me to play to, I realize how meaningful that sharing your art is to the process of making it.

Your debut album is produced by Aaron Sprinkle, what was it like working with him and is there anything that you have learned after working with him on this project?
Working with Aaron has been a dream come true in a lot of ways. I’ve been a major fan of albums he’s produced for many years, and after working with him, I totally see why they’re so great. He understood the vision for the project so well from the very first conversation we had. He very much taught me the importance of emotion in the vocals above everything else. His advice was more or less that if you can deliver the lyrics with the right emotion, everything else will follow, and I think that really showed to be true. I definitely think he brought out a lot of my best vocal performances I’ve ever done on these songs.

You just released your song, ‘Thoughts,’ which reminds us of Yellowcard’s ‘Only One.’ What can you tell us about the process of writing this track and something you are hoping fans can take away from it?
When I first wrote this song, I didn’t really think it would ever see the light of day. I wrote the first verse and chorus when I was just playing around on my guitar at home, and it just lived as a voice memo on my phone for a month or two.

During one of my first meetings with Aaron, I was showing him some acoustic demos. I wasn’t planning to play that song, but he asked me if I had anything a little slower or ballady, so I played him the first verse of that song, and he immediately said, “We NEED to do that one.” So I went home and added the bridge part, which was scrapped from a different song, and over the next week, I wrote a second verse for it. Overall, I just hope that people realize they’re not alone in not having everything figured out. It feels so easy to fall into feeling behind everyone else, but for the most part, I think nobody has it all figured out.

We have an eclectic music taste here at THP, but we are forever emo kids at heart. What has it meant for you to be bringing that true angsty emo rock vibe to the front of the current scene?
I think the angsty emo vibe will always have my heart, so getting to be a part of that scene is such an exciting thing for me. It truly feels like I’m making music that I would be obsessed with if I just heard it organically. This project really feels like I’ve finally honed my sound into what I’ve been working towards for years, and I’m so ready for everyone to hear the rest of it.

With your debut album releasing in early 2026, what can you tell us about the album as a whole?
The album really feels like a perfect mix of my music taste, all swirled into one cohesive project. I’d say it’s at the center of the emo rock, folk, and indie pop venn diagram, which I think encapsulates my entire musical personality. The goal was to make something that fuses all of my influences into one cohesive project, and I really think we nailed that.

We’d love to dig in a little deeper into your songwriting process! What is your favorite way to write? Are you more of a get into the studio and see what happens, or do you like coming into the studio with an idea of the topic of the session or a specific project?
I do most of my writing unintentionally in my bedroom. It’s fairly rare for me to sit down with a topic in mind. Usually, I just strum around on my acoustic at home or in my backyard until I come up with a few lyrics I like, and then I build off of that. Sometimes I’ll take just that idea into the studio, but especially with this project, most of the songs were almost completely finished acoustically before we began working in the studio at all.

For the last question, is there anything else you would like your fans and any new fans to know about you and your upcoming projects?
All-in-all I’m just really excited to share everything I’ve been working on. I truly think this project is my best and most honest writing I’ve ever done. I just want everyone to know how glad I am to get to share this music with anyone who’s willing to listen.

  • Exclusive Interview: Arrows In Action Spill All The Details About I Think I’ve Been Here Before

If you’re looking for a new band to take over your playlists, look no further than Arrows in Action! Their latest album, I Think I’ve Been Here Before, is the perfect gateway into their musical world, so this is the ideal time to jump in! We were lucky enough to get to chat with Arrows in Action all about their newest album, past music, live shows, and so much more!

Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us! To start us off, how would you describe your sound to someone who is tuning in for the first time?
We’re an alternative pop-rock band! We’re a blend of everything we love, and we love a huge array of music.

I Think I’ve Been Here Before is less than a month away. What emotions are you guys feeling leading up to the release of this record?
We’re feeling a mix of relief, excitement, and catharsis with the release of this album! We can’t wait for people to hear it all in its intentional order.

Out of the eleven songs on the record, only two are unreleased. What goes into the decision of what to release and what to hold back?
We wanted to make sure to save the conclusion of the album for the day of release. We were very intentional with the track order on this record, and we wanted our fans to experience the album in its entirety together.

‘Hello Sunlight!’ is the oldest track on the record, having been released in May of last year. When this song came out, did you know it was part of a bigger project, or did that come with time?
Though it was released far ahead of the album, ‘Hello Sunlight!’ is the track that started the writing process and was instrumental in guiding us towards the sounds that would make up Side A.

You’ve released this album in two parts, with Side A coming out earlier this year. How do you group the songs and figure out which song belongs on which side?
In both subject matter and sonics, we accidentally curated two distinct vibes while writing this album. It could be the simplest thing, like the placement of a minor chord that guided a song toward side B, and in many cases, it was the lyrical perspective that placed the song.

With a new album comes the hope of live music! While crafting the album, which song off this album were you most looking forward to bringing to life on stage?
    Victor: ‘Cheekbones,’
    Jesse: ‘Empty Canvas,’
    Matt: ‘Empty Canvas.’

Your debut album, Be More, came out four years ago! When you look at the artists who released that record, and the artists who are about to release this record, what do you see as the biggest area of growth?
Our biggest area of growth has been how much we collaborate! With years of touring and writing together, we know each other better than ever before, and we know how to expand on each other’s ideas.

Once again, thank you so much for chatting with us! Before we let you go, what is one thing on the Arrows in Action bucket list as we close out 2025?
A bucket list item we completed this year was headlining in Europe and the UK! A bucket list item we have that is yet unchecked is performing at Red Rocks in Colorado. Thanks for having us!

  • We Spent A Night Out With Badflower In Los Angeles

We Spent A Night Out With Badflower In Los Angeles

If you’re a fan of music artists such as My Chemical Romance, Arrows in Action, and Linkin Park, you’re going to LOVE Los Angeles-based band, Badflower. We caught them on night two in Los Angeles on their ‘No Place Like Home Tour’ and we’re not gonna stop talking about how good it was!

Image Source: Jay Flores for THP

This was our first time seeing the band, and our expectations were surpassed, to say the least. Josh, Joey, Alex, and Anthony gave one of the best shows we’d ever seen. And, of course, how could we ever dislike a band that gives us silly little banter on stage? From ordering a fan Chipotle to eating a banana on stage, Josh Katz is one of our favorite silly frontmen.

They sang some of their top hits like ‘Don’t Hate Me,’ ‘Johnny Wants to Fight,’ and ‘Promise Me,’ which not only tugged at our heartstrings, but also made us scream the lyrics at the top of our lungs. There’s no way to avoid finger-pointing at the lead singer while singing out your favorite lyrics, is there? (Because if there is, we don’t wanna know the solution.)

Along with having bop after bop after bop on the setlist, the only other thing we could focus on was their HAIR. Joey and Alex with their long, luscious hair, and Josh’s his pink hair. We couldn’t look away!

To close out the show, the band sang their newest single, ‘Detroit,’ as well as two of their other top hits, ’30’ and ‘Girlfriend.’ If there is one tour that we would want to go to over and over and over again, it would be this one! Hands down!

We can’t wait until they stop by Los Angeles again on their next tour! Check out our full gallery below!

  • ‘Swear To God That’ Winona Fighter is Taking Pop Punk by Storm!

‘Swear To God That’ Winona Fighter is Taking Pop Punk by Storm!

If there’s one thing we love here at The Honey POP! It’s sharing all of our favorite artists, new and old, with our honeybees! Which is why today we’re buzzing to tell you all about Winona Fighter’s brand new single ‘Swear To God That I’m (FINE).’  In case you haven’t yet heard of Winona Fighter – let us be the first to introduce you!

Stream ‘Swear To God That I’m (FINE)’ here or watch the video below!

Nashville based rising punk rock act Winona Fighter has just unleashed their new single, ‘Swear To God That I’m (FINE),’ a dynamic blend of candid vulnerability and electrifying punk energy. The track is an honest reflection on the complexities of balancing personal struggles with professional success, and the challenges of trying to navigate these issues.

“’Swear To God That I’m (FINE)’ is a song that comes from a place of just pure honesty. When you spend years GRINDING as a musician and it starts to actually work out, you feel so much gratitude you could explode…or at least that’s my experience”

Frontwoman Coco Kinnon on the release

    Bringing it to Life

In addition to the single, Winona Fighter has also released an accompanying music video for ‘Swear To God That I’m (FINE).’ The visualization offers a poignant juxtaposition between Winona Fighter’s current dynamic presence and the struggles of a young aspiring musician. Frontwoman Coco Kinnon describes the inspiration behind the video as a heartfelt monologue and serves as an ode to her younger self –  capturing the feelings of self-doubt and the pressure to conform to societal expectations.

The video beautifully illustrates the journey of artists grappling with the fear of not measuring up while celebrating the courage to pursue unconventional paths. It resonates with all of us navigating the challenges of their artistic dreams.

    Trigger warning for flashing lights

    Our Favorite Lyrics

    “I’m grateful, I swear
    I’m happy to be here
But hope I die before the pretty girls
    God knows I can’t compare, I swear”

    Want More Winona Fighter?

Just in case ‘Swear To God That I’m (FINE)’ wasn’t enough to get you absolutely hooked on Winona Fighter (or you’re obsessed and looking for more recs) – Here are three more WF essentials!

‘I’M IN THE MARKET TO PLEASE NO ONE’

“Must be insane, got no brain, I’ve got no doubt
    The more you f#ck around
The more sh*t you’ll find out”

    ‘HAMMS IN A GLASS’

    “Woke up lame
I need a break ’cause I’m drowning in the things
    That I can’t control
Send me overboard, everything just stings”

    ‘Nyc’

    “Everybody’s scared to death
    Everybody’s still in debt
    Everybody lost something”

Winona Fighter continues to prove that they’re a force to be reckoned with in the pop-punk scene. Each release continues to get better and better and leaves us starving for more. • Interview: Chrissy Costanza’s New Music Deserves More Than Just ‘7 Minutes’ Of Your Time

Interview: Chrissy Costanza’s New Music Deserves More Than Just ‘7 Minutes’ Of Your Time

We at The Honey POP are Chrissy Costanza stans. We’ve been listening to Against The Current for years. But now, Chrissy has released her own solo music! So we’re so stoked to bring you an exclusive interview with Chrissy Costanza herself! We talk all about her new music, what it’s like releasing solo music, and more. Let’s jump right in!

    Her Solo Career

You’ve been writing songs with Against The Current for over 10 years. What did you find the most difficult from the process of writing for yourself as a solo artist? On the same wavelength, did you find things that made it a bit easier?
The most difficult thing was learning to trust my instincts to determine whether something was good or not. In Against The Current, I could rely on my bandmates as barometers of whether we got it right or not. However, one thing that was easier this time was the lack of pressure to live up to a prior release. In ATC, we are acutely aware that any new music will always be held up and compared to the music the fans are already so attached to. In doing this project, there’s nothing to compare to, so I was able to create freely.

If you could choose any color to describe your new solo music, which would it be?
Crimson. I’ve always been a “red” type of girl overall, but specifically for this project, it feels like a dark, blood-red crimson.

Her New Single, ‘7 Minutes In Hell’

Congratulations on your first solo release! ‘7 Minutes In Hell’ is such a powerful song; what made you want to release it as your first solo single?’
‘7 minutes in Hell’ was the very first song I wrote when I went into the studio with the idea to begin creating solo music. Even as I wrote more songs, this one felt like it best embodied the world I wanted to create: a little bit dark, a lot of fantasy, and questioning what’s good or bad.

‘7 Minutes In Hell’ already establishes a very unique and specific aesthetic. What inspired you to take this route? What other aesthetics do you think can be related to your work?
‘7 Minutes In Hell’ for sure establishes a unique aesthetic, and my inspiration for it came from my love for fantasy. It’s been a dream of mine for a very long time to create a body of work inspired by a fantasy world. I drew a lot from fantasy books I’ve read, playing DnD, video games, etc., so I really wanted to bring those loves into my music as a visual component.

What was it like working with such a prolific director Ryan Valdez, and how did you come up with the concept for the ‘7 Minutes In Hell’ music video?
It was amazing. We’ve worked together before a couple of times, which is why we knew we had to get Ryan on board for this project! He directed the ‘Weapon’ video for ATC, which is one of my all-time favorites. Jade and I had already started conceptualizing the video before, and then when we brought Ryan on. He just completely took it to a whole new level. He’s also incredible at VFX, which made so much of the video possible.

Speaking of the aesthetic, there are a lot of ways you could’ve portrayed the lyrical theme of ‘7 Minutes In Hell’ in the music video. What made you choose the fallen angel route? How did the MV concept/story come to be?
Aside from just the obvious correlation to Heaven & Hell as the inspiration behind the song, the fallen angel holds a lot of significance to the project overall. I’ve always put a lot of pressure on myself to fulfill the expectations of others, and it often felt like I was constantly trying to balance on the pedestal I was placed on top of. The idea of doing this project, was claiming something that was my own and didn’t serve anyone but myself, which felt like a fall from grace in a way.
But with the bloodied and waxen wings, as you see in the video, the story is meant to show you that I was never meant to be this angel after all. Heavy is the head that bears the halo, apparently! The concept came from just talking through these ideas with my manager and creative partner, Jade, and our director Ryan, who helped bring these ideas to life. I knew I wanted to tell the story through the lens of dark romance, so I could have someone who could actually represent that devilish character as opposed to it just being a voice in my head.

‘7 Minutes In Hell’ is a play on the childhood kissing in one’s closet game. What game most brings back nostalgic memories?
I actually never actually played 7 Minutes in Heaven…I was not that cool back then. But, if we’re talking party games and not video games, I will probably have to go with my family’s classic holiday game—Name That Tune! My mom and uncle completely dominate, though, and can name almost any song from the 70s or 80s within a second.

Being A Female Vocalist In The Pop Punk/Adjacent Scene

Female voices and representation in the alternative scene are super important. How have you navigated being a female vocalist in a male-dominated space? Have you ever felt like an outcast or on the outside of the scene, and do you have any advice for aspiring female artists on dealing with those feelings?
I have to give it to my parents for raising me to truly believe I could do anything if I worked hard for it. I refuse to acknowledge the barriers in front of me and have just bulldozed my own path. It’s important for me to recognize the collective effort of all the unbelievable female artists who have come before me and who are killing it now that we keep battering down those walls to open the way for future generations of female artists. For any aspiring female artists, I would remind you that whatever barrier is in your way is inconsequential when faced up against your passion and determination. YOU are more powerful as long as you believe it!

Her Upcoming Spin The Bottle Tour

We know how much you love touring, and we can’t wait to see what you have in store for us! What are you looking forward to the most for these performances?
I am really excited about this tour because it’s so unique. I’ve never done anything like it before. We’re working really hard to make this show a memorable experience for our fans. To give you a sneak peek into the tour, we’re planning to blend our sets, have spinning wheels where fans could potentially pick what songs we play, or win items at the merch, and maybe even have some themed nights! I can’t wait to hit the road with the VOILÁ guys, who have quickly become some of my closest friends. I love and admire them so much, and I’m honored to be touring with them. And I cant wait for you guys to experience this.

Image source: Courtesy of The Syn

What will the 7 minutes before the opening night of your first solo tour look like?
Probably just a TON of panic. I really love playing live shows, but I’m so hard on myself. I know I’ll just be marinating in the stress of doing a great job and singing these songs right for the first time! Also…making my gummy bear tea!

In addition to your upcoming tour with VOILÁ, Against the Current is playing When We Were Young! Are there any artists you’re dying to see?
There are so many artists I’m dying to see. I was late to the scene growing up, so I have never seen many of my favorite artists before. I’m most excited about The Starting Line, Jimmy Eat World, Say Anything, and A Day to Remember.

    What’s Next

Are there any sneak peeks or insight you can give us into what’s coming next in terms of your solo project?
I have a big announcement coming with the next song drop!

Last but not least, is there anything you want to share about your solo project (or anything else) that we haven’t touched on yet?
Really, I’m just relieved and feel crazy grateful for how unbelievable the fans have been to me. It was a mildly terrifying idea to be doing something out of ATC that wasn’t just a feature or collaboration, and I was worried about how people would react, but the love I’ve felt has made me cry multiple times already. I don’t know how I got so lucky, but I will never take it for granted, so if you’re reading this or listened to the song or came to a show – THANK YOU!

We’d like to thank Chrissy Costanza for taking the time to chat with us! What do you think of her new single, ‘7 Minutes In Hell,’ and do you have any plans to go to her solo tour? Let us know in the comments, on Facebook, Instagram, or by tweeting us @thehoneypop

Hi Andrew! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us today! To start us off, how would you sum up who you are as an artist to anyone who is going to dive into your music for the first time?
First and foremost, I’m a lyric-focused songwriter. I’m trying to tell stories with my songs and to tackle the conflicts and questions that arise in my daily life. I get a lot of joy from experimenting with sounds in a studio setting. While there is a pretty clear, pop-minded approach to my writing, you’ll hopefully identify a diverse palate of sounds and arrangements throughout my recordings.

You’ve been a part of so many projects over the course of your career (Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness). How has your creative process changed as you move between projects?
I think my process has become a lot more collaborative. The more time you spend making things, the easier it is to articulate what you want and the more fun it is to translate everyone’s ideas into the work.  I’m far less obsessed with the outcome these days and so much more interested in digging deep with collaborators and going on an adventure in the studio and on the stage.

Something Corporate is officially back! What made you want to reach out to your old bandmates and get the ball rolling working together again?
I had the band out for a surprise set during my birthday show a couple of years back, and the vibe was so good we decided to get back together properly for the When We Were Young fest. There was such a beautiful energy at those shows and, for the five of us, there was palpable joy being back in practice and hanging out in dressing rooms and laughing together. The shows were such a pure connection between us as band members and the audiences we were playing for that we decided to book more and keep the party rolling.

Working with Something Corporate this time around comes about a bit differently, as you’re working as Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. What has coming from the mindset of the art you’ve been making brought to working with the band again?
Working with other projects has made me a better collaborator and it’s given me a real appreciation of the unique chemistry of Something Corporate. There is something magical about the bond we share, having grown up learning to play music together as kids. I am able to fully appreciate and celebrate the rarity of that connection now and it’s made this reunion a really peaceful and joyful moment in my life and I think the other guys’ as well.

‘Death Grip’ is the first single back! Were there other songs that were completed that you chose between to get to this track? What was it about this track that made you guys want it to be your comeback?
‘Death Grip‘ happened really organically. I wrote it in Nashville a month or two before we left for tour. I loved the song and wanted it out into the world. The decision wasn’t made through the lens of this is your comeback track. It was made out of love for the song and the band being excited to be back in the studio together. The song itself is about letting go, receiving life as it comes, and giving back what the universe gives to you. It gave us this song, and we gave it back.

Upon crafting ‘Death Grip’ could you automatically tell what you wanted the live performance of that song to look like?
Not necessarily. I think the biggest shift for me post-Something Corporate has been letting the music evolve in the studio first and then crafting the show separately. ‘Death Grip‘ was very much created through that process. Hence, the Wilderness/SoCo Collab. The production of the next single that’s coming out was approached a little more like a traditional Something Corporate song, and on that one, we will flip the collaboration order to SoCo/Wilderness to reflect that.

You guys just kicked off the Out Of Office Tour. What can fans expect from these shows? Are we going to be getting unreleased music played?
The show itself has a beautiful production incorporating video that weaves in moments from the early days and I think does a beautiful job of connecting fans to the band’s history while creating beautiful new memories to hang on to once you leave. The nearly two-hour set manages to cover the majority of our catalog with some deep cuts from night to night. We also have two new songs that will be out by the time we get to the second leg of the tour, and we will be throwing one of those in per night going forward. We’re really proud of both of them.

The Out Of Office Tour isn’t a typical tour since you’ve said that you’re all having to work around your current jobs. What’s been the hardest and most rewarding parts of touring now compared to back when you only had to focus on SoCo?
Honestly, I’ve been hoping to reimagine the way I live, work, and tour for some time now. The way we structured these dates has afforded me and the band the opportunity to play for lots of fans and have incredible weekends together while still making it home to take care of our families and the careers we’ve built since moving on from Something Corporate in ‘05. The other guys would be able to speak more to the challenges, I’m sure, as some of them are definitely juggling work fields outside of music.

Let’s talk about your partnership with Big Loud Rock! How did that come about? And how has that unfolded for you thus far?
The truth is I’m pretty cagey when it comes to record deals these days. After Tilt came out, I was pretty hell-bent on stepping back from music for a bit and seeing where the wind blew. The day I wrote ‘Death Grip’ I was so excited by it. I started sending music around, and the Big Loud guys were so genuinely stoked about the song and the potential of releasing more that they made me a really fair deal based on mutual trust, and the rest is history. It’s early still but working with them has been a breath of fresh air. So many labels these days simply obsess over data and TikTok and make all their decisions based on fear. These guys love music and building artful campaigns around their releases. It has really been a joy to work with them.

The Holiday From Real cruise kicks off this fall! Obviously, we and all the other fans are so excited. But what aspects are you most excited about?
Playing shows with all of my favorite musicians and friends on a single weekend is going to be incredible. I know people look at these projects as separate entities, and, in many ways, they are, but for me, it’s my life and my music. Bringing that all together in one place, especially a vacation setting, just feels right to me.

Now that the single is out and the tour is underway, what does the rest of 2024 look like for you? What can fans expect?
We’ll be dropping our next single, ‘Happy,’ on July 26, and I have high hopes for that song. It’s about to get busy with more regular shows and lots of travel, but I’m ready for it. We built this show to celebrate the magic that found me and my bandmates in my parent’s garage back in 1998 and the beautiful years of music that followed. I just want people to feel alive at these shows, to use this music as a time machine and make contact with the moments in their lives when this music was the soundtrack. Most importantly, I want fans to walk away with a new formative memory of all of us doing what we love most. Giving ourselves over completely to music for a couple of hours and singing these songs together. I want it to be visceral.

  • In Her Own Words New Single Makes Us ‘Beg For More’

In Her Own Words New Single Makes Us ‘Beg For More’

2024 has already proven to be a fantastic year for pop punk. We’ve had new music from Neck Deep, Telltale, The Home Team, and so many others. But now, In Her Own Words gets to join the list and we’re absolutely ecstatic! They recently released their new single and we’re obsessed! And In Her Own Words’ ‘Beg For More’ It has us, well… begging for more new music.

“”Beg for More” is about not being able to rid yourself of toxic energy from a relationship. Even though you know you have to remove someone from your life, you can’t bring yourself to actually do what is best for you.”

    ‘Beg For More’

This is their first release since their much-loved 2022 album, Distance or Decay and it’s absolutely everything we wanted and more. It has all the components of a great pop punk song. It’s super catchy and it will get stuck in your head. And the lyrics? Devastatingly relatable. ‘Beg For More’ seems to be the perfect introduction track to usher in IHOW’s new era and we couldn’t be more stoked. In the meantime, we’ll be listening to this on repeat!

    Our favorite lyrics:
I wrote a letter to the old me
So I would never make the same mistake again
But now I’m driving up to your street

What do you think of In Her Own Words’ new song, ‘Beg For More?’ How excited are you for their new era? Let us know in the comments, on Facebook, Instagram, or by tweeting us @thehoneypop!

  • Blink-182 kick off ‘One More Time’ tour in Orlando this week

    Blink-182 play Orlando this week

Pop-punk icons Blink-182 and emo band Pierce the Veil may very well make fans want to “take off their pants and jacket,” and who would blame them with this hot lineup?

After co-vocalist and guitarist Tom DeLonge rejoined in Blink-182 in 2022 — after a seven-year absence — the band released a track, “Edging,” to mark the occasion. This tour serves as further notice of the trio being back together, revisiting hits like “I Miss You” and “All The Small Things” and even releasing new music — like recent album One More Time.

With openers jxdn and Pierce the Veil, the audience is sure to have nostalgic flashbacks of, say, skating around the neighborhood listening to Collide With the Sky … or other emo anthems to soothe the bruises from falling off said board.

    7 p.m. Thursday, June 20, Kia Center, $130.

  • LiL Lotus Drops Deluxe Version of ‘nosebleeder’

LiL Lotus Drops Deluxe Version of ‘nosebleeder’

Interview and Photos by Jordan Edwards

Today, LiL Lotus released the deluxe version of his sophomore album nosebleeder. It features acoustic versions of standout tracks including “blame me for everything” with Mod Sun, as well as a cover of Lil Uzi Vert’s “Grab the Wheel.”

Since his debut EP Bodybag in 2017, LiL Lotus has gradually shifted away from the alternative hip-hop sound he started with. Signed to Epitaph Records, he now mixes elements of pop-punk, metal, and Y2K alt rock.

We met up with the Texas-born musician for a photoshoot and to talk about the album.

Tell me about this Lil Uzi Vert cover. How did you put that together?
I always loved Uzi and that song, and I always felt the lyrics hella. They’re super sad when you really listen behind all the flexing, so I wanted to make a sad version of it.

You teamed up with Mod Sun for the track “blame me for everything.” What was it like to work with him and make that song?
Mod’s always been the homie and super fun to hang with, so the process of the song just came naturally and we just goofed off and caught up while making it. So happy on how it came out.

You’ve shifted from an alt hip-hop sound to rock. What do you love about pop-punk?
I’d say this album is less pop punk than error boy, but as far as rock goes, it’s definitely my roots and where I feel most at home. Emotionally it’s very fulfilling, ’cause it’s powerful enough to get my point across.

Do you have a favorite tattoo?
Probably the angel on my face. It’s not the craziest design, but the baby angel that cut off his own head just symbolizes me, so I’m very attached to it.

You grew up in Texas. What do you miss about living there?
Well, I have my family there and I miss them, but as far as Texas itself goes, I’d say the food. No one does it like Texas. I don’t care what anyone says (at least out towards the east coast).

LiL Lotus by Jordan Edwards for Popdust

Is there someone you listen to that might surprise people?
Hmm I listen to a lot of music. Mk.gee, Yuele, Këkht Aräkh are some of the people I’m really into right now.

What are you planning for the spring and summer?
I’ve already started this new album, which I’m so stoked on. Really, just more music and getting healthy, oh, and more shows. Maybe get into this TikTok bullshit, who knows?

WATCH: Travis Mills and Nick Gross on the Making of girlfriends

Although he found early success as a rapper, Travis Mills always liked the idea of being in a band. He grew up admiring blink-182, MxPx, and The Used. Early groups didn’t work out for various reasons, and he found solo success with tracks like “Diemonds” and “Young & Stupid.”

In drummer Nick Gross, Mills found a musical partner with the drive to make their band a success. Together as girlfriends, the duo has embraced the music that shaped their youth. They enlisted producer John Feldmann, the Dr. Dre of pop punk, to complete their sound. Over two albums and an EP, they’ve created anthems that sound like artifacts of the early 2000s, rather than recreations of TRL rock.

Released this week, “shut & kiss me” sounds like it could have been on the Road Trip soundtrack. It’s the first new music for the band since the EP Over My Dead Body last May.

The partnership has not only allowed them to make music they love; it’s given them an opportunity to play and record with some of their favorite artists. This summer, girlfriends will join Avril Lavigne on her North American tour.

Watch Mills and Gross talk to Jordan Edwards about their experience with girlfriends, touring with Lavigne, and making music at The Noise Nest.

  • Why Yellowcard Reunited and Recorded a New EP

Why Yellowcard Reunited and Recorded a New EP

This past summer, Yellowcard reunited and performed dozens of shows at large venues across the country. They also released their first new music since 2016.

The EP Childhood Eyes returns to the sound that made them popular, but the songwriting reflects their maturity and sense of nostalgia. It includes collaborations with Dashboard Confessional and Pierce The Veil, as well as the lead single “Childhood Eyes.”

The reunion coincides with the recent pop punk renaissance as younger bands reach back for those Y2K power chords and hooks. Yellowcard is enjoying the ride. An appearance at When We Were Young on Oct. 21 is the only thing currently on the band’s calendar, but fans should feel optimistic about future shows.

Will there be any more new music? Although there are no plans for a new album, a statement on the band’s Instagram says, “The future is bright. We clearly have so much more to do.”

Watch frontman Ryan Key talk to Jordan Edwards and Demi Ramos about the reunion, making the EP, and the story behind “Ocean Avenue.”
