  • NYPD Officers Injured After Being Pelted With Snowballs In Washington Square Park: “Not Harmless Fun”

    [ad_1]

A video of New Yorkers pelting police with snowballs on Monday was not all in good fun. Several NYPD officers were injured responding to a large, organized snowball fight in Washington Square Park.

New York Detectives Endowment Association President Scott Munro said the viral video was not harmless fun:

MUNRO: “What we saw in Washington Square Park today was not harmless fun — it was a deliberate, outrageous, and dangerous attack on uniformed police officers. The Detectives’ Endowment Association is calling on Mayor Mamdani and District Attorney Bragg to ensure every individual responsible for this illegal behavior is prosecuted. No free pass. No get out of jail free card.

Make no mistake: detectives will do what they always do. They will identify those involved and they will apprehend them.

Our men and women in blue deserve to be safe. They deserve to be protected. And they deserve to be respected.

They earn it every single day.”

Even NYC Mayor Mamdani said, “treat them with respect.”

Man accused of pulling gun in Altamonte Springs gym, claimed it was a candy bar

WESH TWO NEWS STARTS NOW. ORLANDO MAN IS BEHIND BARS AFTER POLICE SAY HE PULLED A GUN ON TWO PEOPLE AT A JIM. IT HAPPENED AT A CRUNCH FITNESS IN ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, WESH 2’S. LUANA MUNOZ IS LIVE IN SEMINOLE COUNTY TONIGHT, WHERE PEOPLE WHO GO TO THAT GYM ARE TALKING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. LUANA. THAT’S ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. THIS HAS BEEN A HOT TOPIC OF CONVERSATION TODAY. A LOT OF GYM GOERS ARE ON EDGE. WHILE SOME ARE SAYING THIS IS JUST NOW THE WORLD THAT WE’RE LIVING IN. CRUNCH FITNESS IN ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, OFF NORTH STATE ROAD 434, BECAME THE CENTER OF CONFUSION AND CHAOS TUESDAY MORNING. POLICE SAY THIS MAN, 45 YEAR OLD WINSTON MEDLEY, PULLED OUT A GUN AND POINTED IT AT TWO PEOPLE WHO WERE WORKING OUT. GYM MEMBER BLAKE SAFFORD SAYS HE NORMALLY WORKS OUT. AROUND THE SAME TIME OF THE INCIDENT, BUT WASN’T THERE THAT DAY. IT PUTS PEOPLE ON EDGE, YOU KNOW, YOU DON’T KNOW WHO’S NEXT TO YOU IN THE GYM ANYMORE. YOU DON’T. YOU DON’T KNOW WHO YOU’RE WALKING NEXT TO OR WHAT’S ON THEIR MIND OR WHAT THEY’RE GOING TO DO. ACCORDING TO POLICE RECORDS, ONE OF THE VICTIMS WAS WORKING OUT WITH A GROUP OF MEN WHEN MEDLEY APPROACHED THE GROUP AND BEGAN MAKING COMMENTS ABOUT THE WEIGHT THE MEN WERE USING. THE TWO STARTED ARGUING, AND THE VICTIM SAYS HE WALKED TO ANOTHER AREA TO CONTINUE HIS WORKOUT, BUT MEDLEY FOLLOWED. REPEATEDLY ASKING THE VICTIM IF HE HAD A PROBLEM WITH HIM, THE VICTIM CLAIMS HE TOLD MEDLEY. HE WAS, QUOTE, ACTING AGGRESSIVELY AND NEEDED TO STOP. THAT’S WHEN MEDLEY BRANDISHED A FIREARM AND POINTED IT DIRECTLY AT HIS FACE. COURT DOCUMENTS SAY THE VICTIM WAS IN FEAR OF HIS LIFE AND IMMEDIATELY RAN AWAY. HE THEN SAW MEDLEY MANIPULATING THE GUN AS IF HE WAS ATTEMPTING TO FIRE OR ADJUST IT. I DON’T THINK EITHER ONE OF US REALLY FEEL THAT WAY ABOUT IT, ESPECIALLY WITH THE WORLD THAT WE LIVE IN NOW. GIVEN THAT THIS HAPPENS A LOT, YOU KNOW WHAT I’M SAYING? LIKE, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT COULD HAPPEN TO ANYBODY AT ANY TIME. I’M A NATIVE OF THIS AREA, BORN AND RAISED, AND THIS STUFF NEVER USED TO HAPPEN IN MY COMMUNITY GROWING UP. AND NOW TO SEE THIS HAPPENING IN THE COMMUNITY THAT, YOU KNOW, I’M BORN AND RAISED IN NOW, RAISING MY OWN KIDS IN, IT’S SCARY. IT’S LIKE WHERE, YOU KNOW, WHAT’S WHAT’S HAPPENING. AND WE DID REACH OUT TO THE VICTIM WHO DID NOT WANT TO GO ON CAMERA. MEDLEY IS FACING A NUMBER OF CHARGES, INCLUDING FIRST DEGREE PREMEDITATED MURDER, AS WELL AS POSSESSION OF A FIREARM BY A CONVICTED FELON. HE’S ALSO DUE BACK IN COURT ON APRIL 7T

During a panel discussion on immigration enforcement Tuesday night, experts said citizens can also challenge local police departments’ use of security technology from companies like Flock Security, which allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement to access license plate data collected by local law enforcement.

    AP

The mauling of a man Monday afternoon in the Hammocks led Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies to shooting two “vicious” dogs, authorities said.

At 2:30 p.m. deputies were near SW 172 Ave. and SW 161 St. after being called to the area about a previously reported robbery.

Deputies heard loud noises and screaming from outside a nearby home and went into its backyard and saw a man being attacked by the two large dogs.

A deputy used his Electronic Control Device to temporarily stun the dogs, but they continued to attack the victim. At that point, the deputies shot both dogs, according to a news release from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

The deputies helped the victim stop bleeding by using a tourniquet. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported him to a hospital, where he is in stable condition.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs detectives are investigating the incident.

  • The Bronx is bleeding: Gun violence surge in February leads cops to deploy additional resources ahead of reorganization | amNewYork

Gun violence has exploded in the Bronx in February, leaving a number of people dead — and prompting the NYPD to deploy additional resources to the borough ahead of a major reorganization set to take place this spring.

According to police sources, the Bronx has had an increase of nine shootings this month as of Feb. 15, compared to the same time last year. One of these shootings included the slaying of 16-year-old up-and-coming football star Christopher Redding. A 17-year-old gunman was cuffed and charged with his murder over the weekend.

Redding’s former coach, Christopher Lopez, said that the teenager died while protecting others amid a hail of bullets fired on Feb. 11 at the corner of Broadway and West 238th Street in Kingsbridge.

“Christopher was defending his friends who were being targeted by a group of individuals who then opened fire on them in the Bronx. His last act on earth was one of courage and selflessness, protecting those he cared about. The loss of Christopher has deeply affected his family, his teammates, and the entire community,” Christopher Lopez, the boy’s former coach, wrote a GoFundMe set up in his honor.

One day before Redding was tragically gunned down, 41-year-old Adrian Dawodu was fatally shot on the 170 Street Station platform on the afternoon of Feb. 10 during a violent brawl caught on viral video. His alleged killer, 27-year-old Alberto Frias, remains on the lam after begging for aid from his girlfriend.

“We have him on video running back to the apartment. He’s very frantic. He meets up with his girlfriend and another family member, asking them to get him an Uber,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said. “They order him a Lyft. But, actually, while he changes his clothing, he drops the shell case he must have had in his clothing. He leaves the shell casing at the scene, inside of his apartment, in his bedroom.”

Days later, on Feb. 13, 26-year-old Amir Ahmad was found dead with a gunshot wound to the chest outside of 660 Thwaites Place near Boston Road in an apparent robbery.

On Feb. 16, a 37-year-old man was shot in the leg and had his gold chain stolen outside of a gas station located at 1930 Bartow Ave. He is expected to survive.

According to NYPD data, shootings in the Bronx were already on the rise as of Feb. 8 by 26.3%, before last week’s deadly spate.

When reached for comment, an NYPD spokesperson told amNewYork that police have deployed additional resources to the Bronx, but cautioned that the year is still young, and it is too early to suggest a broader, upward trend in gun violence.

“Six weeks of data is a statistically short time frame to allege any type of broad trend. We are in the infancy of 2026 and to use this short timeframe of crime data would not be statistically accurate,” an NYPD spokesperson said.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch previously admitted that the Bronx has steadily led the way in crime more than any other borough. During her State of the NYPD address last week, she revealed she will be splitting into two police sections, allowing her to flood the area with more cops.

“For too long, the Bronx has experienced more crime per capita than any other borough while operating under a structure that hasn’t kept pace with the demands placed on it,” Tisch stated. “Just look at the numbers. Last year, the Bronx accounted for more than one-third of all shooting incidents and shooting victims citywide – roughly three times Queens and Manhattan. The borough recorded more major crime than Manhattan and Queens, and nearly as much as Brooklyn. And Bronx residents generated nearly one million calls for service last year – more than Queens and nearly equal to Manhattan.”

  • Scots police dog helps bust over 10,000 illegal cigarettes during raids

    [ad_1]

The heroic dog was pictured sitting proudly among bags of illegal cigarettes that were seized during various raids.

A Scots police dog has helped bust more than 10,000 illicit cigarettes during raids in West Lothian. A total of 10,340 illicit cigs and 43 pouches of hand rolling tobacco were discovered during joint raids in Armadale and Whitburn.

The premises were targeted after tip offs from the public. The local authority trading standards team alongside officers from Police Scotland tracked down the illegal goods during several searches, reports Edinburgh Live.

But it was a tobacco detection spaniel who stole the show sniffing out the harmful products. West Lothian Council said they got “a little help from their four-legged friend” who helped the team while carrying our their warrants.

An adorable photo posted on social media shows the heroic police dog, who name is unfortunately not known, sitting proudly in the back of a police van among four bags of illicit cigarettes that were seized during the raids.

A spokesperson for West Lothian Council said: “Our Trading Standards Team have been getting a little help from a four-legged friend.

“The council’s Trading Standards Team have been involved in joint raids with officers from Police Scotland and tobacco detection dogs, with illicit tobacco being seized from premises in Armadale and Whitburn following information from the local community.

“A total of 10,340 cigarettes and 43 pouches of hand rolling tobacco were removed from sale. The premises have also been reported to HMRC.”

The council spokesperson explained how illicit tobacco can contain a higher amount of harmful or unknown substances, as well as poor unregulated factory conditions where they are produced.

Setting out more of the dangers, they went on: “Illicit cigarettes may also have an increased fire risk as they are unlikely to have not been manufactured using fire retardant paper, which means such cigarettes will not go out quickly if left unattended, potentially causing a dangerous fire.

“Underage sales of tobacco may be more likely due to the lower sale price being appealing to children, and lack of age verification by the sellers. The income generated from the sale of illicit tobacco has also been linked to funding serious and organised crime. Local legitimate businesses are impacted due to unfair competition.”

If you have any concerns about illicit tobacco being sold in your local area, you can report this anonymously online to Trading Standards here.

  • At Nancy Guthrie’s Home, a Surreal Scene of Chaos and Camaraderie

    [ad_1]

“It’s Monday morning quarterbacking,” Nanos said. “I do it all the time, so you can do that for me. I’ll take that hit.” And to a question about whether possible evidence could have been contaminated? That’s a later problem. “I’ll let the courts worry about that.”

Even a widely reported SWAT action at a residence near Guthrie’s home Friday night was accompanied by little context: Media assembled at a designated point, expecting an update, but were told hours later that there would be no formal statement. “Because this is a joint investigation, at the request of the FBI – no additional information is currently available,” the PCSD said via X. According to CNN, no suspects were detained in the law enforcement swarm, which blocked a road about two miles from the primary scene.

Day after day for almost two weeks, a growing number of people—media professionals and self-appointed citizen investigators alike—have flocked to Nancy’s home in the Catalina Foothills outside Tucson, where information comes out in drips and drabs, sudden flurries of activity erupt and then abruptly die out, and that crime scene tape goes up and down again and again. Consider that though the FBI on Tuesday released several still shots and clips of a person approaching Nancy’s door, recovered from home surveillance cameras, law enforcement continues to decline to confirm or deny that there were signs of forced entry to the home. “I have no clue where that comes from,” Nanos said in that news conference. “We are not discussing that at all.”

In the same media briefing, he seemed to shut down hope that any footage would be recovered, saying, “the tech company that we sent that camera off to, they’ve run out of ways to recover any video.” Because Nancy didn’t have an active subscription, the footage wasn’t saved.

Then, those images were released on February 10, along with a joint statement from law enforcement citing “residual data” on “backend servers” that “uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.” What change that made this possible? They’re not saying.

Ford Hatchett, a journalist with Phoenix’s ABC15, arrived at Nancy’s house on Monday, February 1, the morning after her disappearance, and has been back and forth between Phoenix and Tucson several times in the days since. He tells Vanity Fair that while he’s covered crime stories before, “this particular case has been pretty bizarre.”

  • Nancy Guthrie update as active SWAT operation underway: Report

    [ad_1]

An active SWAT operation is unfolding in Pima County, Arizona, near Nancy Guthrie’s neighborhood, in connection to her disappearance, News Nation reports on Friday night.

Newsweek reached out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department via email Friday night for comment.

    Why It Matters

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been missing for 13 days. The disappearance and search have sparked nationwide attention. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said items at the scene indicate that the 84-year-old woman did not leave “on her own.”

    What To Know

According to NewsNation, SWAT centered in on a home, ordered two people out and they complied. The home is now being searched. The area blocked off by police is about 1.9 miles from Guthrie’s home, NewsNation reports.

A Pima County Sheriff’s Department plane was in the air on Friday, NewsNation says, about the time a mobile command center was spotted leaving the department.

Also on Friday, TMZ said it received a new email from a man claiming to know the identity of Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapper. The email says the person wants the $100,000 FBI reward in two separate bitcoin transactions and will reveal “the name of the main individual.”

This is a developing story that will be updated with additional information.
