    Two California-based journalists won $100,000 in the American Mosaic Journalism Prize, announced on Wednesday

    NEW YORK — Two California-based freelance journalists were awarded the American Mosaic Journalism Prize, giving them $100,000 each for their work, it was announced on Wednesday.

    The Heising-Simons Foundation gives the annual prize for excellence in long-form journalism about underrepresented groups in the United States. The foundation said it is the largest dollar prize given annually for journalism in the U.S.

    Cerise Castle, a journalist from Los Angeles, won for her investigative piece, “A Tradition of Violence,” which looked at gangs within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the foundation said.

    Her story first appeared in Knock LA, a nonprofit community journalism project, and quickly spread, including an article on NPR. The story last year received the American Journalism Online Award for best use of public records.

    The other award went to Carvell Wallace, a writer and podcaster based in Oakland. He was honored for a piece that appeared on Medium, “What if My Mother Had An Abortion,” exploring how her life would have been different if she hadn’t had him. Judges also cited his story on Black cyclist Justin Williams that appeared in Bicycling magazine.

    “I’ve long thought that the only thing that really matters is how we treat each other,” Wallace said. “I view everything through this lens, whether it’s sports, culture, politics, art or film.”

    Fountain Podcasts, a Lightning-enabled podcast app designed to facilitate value for value transactions, has introduced their 0.6.0 update with many features oriented towards capturing new value for value users. 

    In a blog post, Fountain highlighted the new ability to fund your Fountain account via a partnership with MoonPay. Through this partnership, users can now use a debit card or credit card to purchase satoshis which arrive in the app’s wallet shortly thereafter.

    The update also brings the arrival of the activity page, a feed which shows popular episodes and clips. The release describes how, “This is just the first of many new social discovery features we will be adding to Fountain that use money as a signal for value.”

    In addition to these larger updates, several UI changes were implemented, including a new content card design, the ability to reply to clips, clips and comments being displayed on the episode pages under Activity and more.

    Through the Fountain app, podcasters can receive sats for the content they provide, while listeners can receive sats for likes on their comments or clips. Streaming your favorite podcaster sats on a minute-by-minute basis provides a direct link between the consumer and the content creator, and is a way to empower these creators using Lightning.

    By facilitating this value for value model, podcasters can avoid external sources of funding. In many industries, but especially in the Bitcoin industry, these external sources can introduce conflicts of interest which can potentially even prove harmful to consumers who trust their favorite podcasters. With software like Fountain, these consumers can directly support these podcasters and reduce the potential for such events.

    Hugh Jackman is sharing details on how his best-known character, grisly mutant X-Man Wolverine, will interact with Ryan Reynolds’s wisecracking Deadpool in the upcoming “Deadpool 3.”

    In a recent Empire Film podcast, Jackman said the two characters are a “zero” in terms of compatibility, calling them “opposites” and saying that they “hate each other” – all of which will make for some really good odd-couple type humor in the movie.

    “He’s annoyed by him,” he said on the podcast. “[Wolverine is] frustrated by [Deadpool and] wants to be a million miles away from him or wants to punch him in the head. Unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in this movie, so I’m probably going to punch him in the head a lot.”

    The dynamic also mirrors Jackman’s interactions with Reynolds offscreen, as the friends share a long-running gag of pretending to dislike each other on social media, often mocking or ridiculing one another for a laugh.

    Jackman has (astonishingly) been portraying Wolverine, also known as Logan, since the year 2000, when the first “X-Men” movie came out.

    He has donned the adamantium claws almost a dozen times since, even helping to introduce Reynolds as Deadpool/Wade Wilson (in an early and unsuccessful iteration) in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

    The “Son” actor’s last go-round as Wolverine came in 2017’s well-received “Logan,” which wrapped up the character’s storyline in a neat and according to him, “perfect” way, nabbing an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay in the process.

    Jackman made it clear in the podcast that the new film takes place firmly before the events of “Logan,” so that it won’t change that movie’s timeline for the fan-favorite character.

    He had previously said that “Logan” would be his last time playing Wolverine, which of course is no longer the case. In the podcast, he was actually able to pinpoint the exact date this summer when he had a change of heart.

    “It was August 14th, I remember driving, and it came to me like that, I just thought, this is going to be so much fun. I’ll probably have more fun on that movie than anything I’ve ever done,” he said.

    Even still, Jackman said the process for training to become Wolverine – a character he identifies as being farthest from who he really is as a person – gets harder every time, but that this time around, he has some extra motivation.

    “I just get the added incentive of taking Ryan Reynolds out every day. So I really want to be in good shape for that, so I can enjoy it!”

    “Deadpool 3” is due in theaters in November of 2024.

    After spending 25 years in prison on murder convictions related to the 1996 shooting death of their friend, two Georgia men were exonerated this week, after new evidence uncovered in a true-crime podcast last year proved their innocence, their lawyers said.

    Darrell Lee Clark and his co-defendant Cain Joshua Storey were 17 years old when they were arrested for their alleged involvement in the death of 15-year-old Brian Bowling.

    He died from a gunshot wound to the head in his family’s mobile home on October 18, 1996, according to Clark’s lawyers, Christina Cribbs and Meagan Hurley, with the nonprofit Georgia Innocence Project.

    Moments before the gun was fired, Bowling was on the phone with his girlfriend and told her he was playing a game of Russian roulette with a gun, which was brought to his home by Storey, who was in the room at the time of the shooting, according to a news release from the Georgia Innocence Project.

    Storey was charged with involuntary manslaughter, but months later, police began investigating the death as a homicide, and interviewed two witnesses whose statements led authorities to tie Clark to Bowling’s death, the Georgia Innocence Project said.

    “Despite the circumstances, which strongly indicated that Bowling accidentally shot himself in the head, at the urging of Bowling’s family members, police later began investigating the death as a homicide,” according to a motion filed by Clark’s attorneys, requesting a new trial.

    The two teenagers were sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, following a weeklong trial in 1998.

    Clark’s exoneration came a year and a half after investigative podcasters Susan Simpson and Jacinda Davis began scrutinizing his case in their Proof true-crime podcast in 2021, and interviewed two of the state’s key witnesses.

    Through their investigation, new evidence emerged which “shattered the state’s theory of Clark’s involvement” in Bowling’s death and the podcasters flagged his case to the Georgia Innocence Project, according to its news release.

    The first witness, a woman who lived near Bowling’s home was interviewed by police, who claimed she alleged the teens confessed they had “planned the murder of Bowling because he knew too much about a prior theft Storey and Clark had committed,” according to the Georgia Innocence Project.

    Based on her testimony, Storey was charged with murder and Clark was arrested as a co-conspirator despite having a corroborated alibi, stating he was home on the night of the shooting, which was supported by two witnesses, according to Clark’s motion for a new trial.

    But the woman revealed in the podcast, police coerced her into giving false statements and threatened to take her children away from her if she failed to comply, according to the Georgia Innocence Project.

    Darrell Lee Clark was released from the Floyd County Jail on Thursday after the Rome Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office and Floyd County Superior Court Judge John Neidrach agreed that his conviction should be overturned.

    Police claimed the other witness, a man who was in a different room of the Bowlings’ home at the time of the shooting, identified Clark from a photo lineup as the person he saw running through the yard on the night Bowling was shot, the news release said.

    It was uncovered in the podcast the man’s testimony was based on an “unrelated, factually similar shooting” which he witnessed in 1976, and he never identified Clark as the individual in the yard, nor did he ever witness anyone in the yard on the night of the shooting, according to the Georgia Innocence Project.

    Davis told CNN in an interview when she and Simpson started their investigation, they weren’t expecting anything to come of it, but as they interviewed more people, it was “clear that it just wasn’t adding up.”

    “It took us a long time to talk to both of those witnesses. The podcast was happening in almost real time as an investigation. When we finally found and were able to talk to those two witnesses, it really solidified that both of these guys had been wrongly convicted,” Davis said.

    Clark’s attorneys filed pleadings in September to challenge a wrongful conviction and ask for a new trial, citing new information which proved his conviction was based on false evidence and coercion, Hurley told CNN.

    Clark, now 43, was released from the Floyd County Jail Thursday after the Rome Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office and Floyd County Superior Court Judge John Neidrach agreed the conviction should be overturned and all underlying charges against him dismissed, after evidence in the case was reexamined.

    Storey, who admitted to bringing the gun to Bowling’s home, was also released after accepting a plea deal for involuntary manslaughter, and a 10-year sentence with time served, after spending 25 years in prison. He was also exonerated of murder charges.

    Storey told CNN in an interview he was afraid to go to sleep the first night after he was released in case he would wake up and “realize it was all a dream.”

    “It’s been surreal to say the least,” he added. “I believe it’s going to be great. One step at a time. I never allowed my mind to get locked up all those years, anyhow.”

    “You never think something like that is going to happen to you,” said Lee Clark in a statement released by the Georgia Innocence Project. “Never would I have thought I would spend more than half my life in prison, especially for something I didn’t do.”

    Clark’s father, Glen Clark, told CNN in an interview, “I’ve been waiting for this day for a long, long time. 25 years. My son was wrongly accused, and I knew it all these years. It’s hard for me to live with that.”

    “I watched my son go into prison as a kid, I watched him go through prison, I watched him come out as a man. He became a man in prison,” he added.

    Clark is living with his family in their home in Floyd County for the foreseeable future as he focuses on readjusting to life outside prison and rebuilding his life, he told CNN. Storey said he also moved back to Floyd County, with plans to go back to school and get a job.

    Clark said Judge Neidrach apologized on behalf of the state of Georgia and Floyd County this week during the court hearing this week, which was an important step toward healing.

    “That really touched my heart, because I had been living in corruption for so long, and it meant a lot to have someone acknowledge that wrong,” he told CNN.

    The Georgia Innocence Project will work to support Clark during his transition and connect him to resources, and a personal fundraiser has been organized on the MightyCause platform, open to the public for donations to Clark and his family, Hurley said.

    “It’s probably going to take some time to like truly process that he is free and doesn’t have to go back behind prison walls, because he spent most of his life behind them,” Hurley said.

    After his release, Clark is living with his family in their home in Floyd County for the foreseeable future as he focuses on readjusting to life outside prison and rebuilding his life.

    “More than anything, he’s looking forward to getting to spend time with his family and rebuilding some of those relationships that he was, frankly, ripped away from at the age of 17,” she added.

    The exonerations of both men were the culmination of a collaboration between Clark, Storey and his defense team, as well as the Bowling family, which was willing to take an “objective look at this case and reevaluate some of the things they have been told in the past,” Hurley said.

    Davis was in the courtroom during Clark and Storey’s hearing this week and said she’s still “in shock” and feels a huge amount of relief for both men.

    “In the end, I also feel for Brian Bowling’s family who have been incredibly gracious and supportive as well. It’s really rare when you have the victim’s family support the convictions being overturned,” Davis said.

With more and more people busy and on the go, it’s no surprise that people are opting for audio-only listening — whether in the car, on a walk, on a plane or while cooking dinner. Podcasts are here to stay, and they’re only just getting started.

    When it comes to business, one of the most critical factors in your growth is the number of people you know, like and trust. Podcasts will help you tick all three of those boxes. If you’re not leveraging them as a part of your marketing, let today be the day that changes.

    You will get more reach and exposure as a direct result of the podcasts, and you can leverage the video content from the episode across your social media channels.     1. Build a list

    When it comes to getting booked on podcasts, the best place to start is getting clear on the types of shows where you feel you can first reach the right people and, secondly, add the most value. Ensuring each podcast is aligned with your work will simplify the process. It goes without saying, but if you’re in the hair and beauty space, a finance podcast isn’t going to interview you.

    If you’ve never done podcasts before, start small. Trying to get onto Joe Rogan or Tony Robbins podcast if you’re just starting might dampen your spirits. Try to find podcasts that have between 500-5000 listeners per episode, as these will be your best shot, and build a list of at least 20 podcasts.

    2. Connect with the host directly

    It goes without saying, but podcast hosts get pitched — a lot. If you want to skyrocket the chances of a host booking you, the best place to start is to connect with them on social media. Doing so starts the relationship by giving, which is far more likely to end with the host reciprocating.

    So, take the time to listen to an episode, drop them a friend request or follow, and send them a message telling them that you love their show and that a particular message resonated with you.

    3. Create your pitch

    Crafting a pitch can seem like a daunting task. The best place to start is your talking points. What are 2-3 things that, from your experience, you know better than anyone else? Try to get a little more creative than”Scaling to 6-figures,” — as you’ll sound like everyone else. Lean into your uniqueness and story here, as that will sell the host on having you on their show. Remember to keep your pitch short. Here is a basic framework: Compliment, Story, Value and Call To Action.

    Compliment: Who doesn’t love a compliment? Start with this to ensure the host knows it’s personalized and not a mass pitch. E.g., “Loved your episode with John Smith. The message about growing from within really resonated with me.

    Story: Your story is what will sell them. Share the unique parts of you and your story in 1-3 sentences.

    Value: Podcast hosts want to hear the value you have to provide. Share your 2-3 unique talking points with them in bullet format.

    Call to action (CTA): You’ll never know if you don’t ask. Ask them if they’d like to have you as a guest. For example: “I’d love to share these insights with your audience. If you think this would be valuable for them, would you be open to scheduling a time?”

    4. Press send and automate the follow-up

    So you’ve got your list, your pitch, so here comes the exciting part. Pressing send! Whether pitching the media, or a podcast, in this case, sending emails can be time-consuming, particularly the follow-up. That being said, there are some great email tools that you can leverage, such as Lemlist or Omni.us, where you can create custom email campaigns with automated follow-up sequences.

    We all know that not every email gets replied to, and often the host won’t reply until the second or third email — and trust me, persistence pays off. Make sure to keep the follow-ups around 3-4 days apart, as no one likes to be bombarded daily. We all get enough emails as it is.

    There’s no doubt that podcasts are a great way to build authority, reach new audiences, and ultimately, grow your brand and bottom line. This 4-step process is all you need to book yourself onto great podcasts regularly.

    Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari have reunited on a podcast to talk all things “Laguna Beach.”

    The former reality show co-stars joined Stephen Colletti for Cavallari and Colletti’s “Back to the Beach” podcast, which recaps the series in current time.

    This week, Conrad was the guest, and admitted that while home sick with Covid, she rewatched the MTV series.

    “Watching it was so much worse than I imagined it would be,” Conrad said. “It was really cringey.”

    Cavallari and Conrad were frenemies on the series, and also had a mutual former boyfriend in Colletti.

    “My take on it is, you and I never really had any beef,” Cavallari said on the podcast, adding that MTV edited the show to make it seem worse than it was.

    Conrad responded with, “I mean, I don’t think we were, like, best friends. But we were like, ‘It’s fine.’”

    “I mean, we had an issue with each other, but it had been squashed,” Conrad added.

    The two confirmed that things between them are now fine.

    Conrad admits some regrets from her time on the show.

    “My biggest regret was, watching it, I called you a slut. I’m so sorry,” Conrad said to Cavallari. “Watching it, it was my, like, ‘Oh, I couldn’t believe I did that.’ Because I think where I’m at now, I would never call another woman that, or girl.”

    Both Conrad and Cavallari have gone on to have successful businesses.

    When fall is in full swing, it’s all about sports at my house.

    Like clockwork, my husband invariably takes control of the television with a hearty “You know what time it is!”

    Sundays are for college football and Mondays pro football — so I’m freed up to hunker down with one of our other TVs and enjoy some uninterrupted viewing time of my own.

    But thanks to John Stamos, I’m now more of a basketball fan, which leads us into what to watch this week.

    ‘Big Shot’ Season 2

    John Stamos is back as the coach of a high school basketball team at an elite girls private school.

    His character is still temperamental, but in the show’s second season his team is now in a different division and — *gasp* — boys have arrived at Westbrook.

    Stamos gets an assist in this sports dramedy from costars Yvette Nicole Brown and Jessalyn Gilsig, among others; it’s exactly what you would expect from a series cocreated by David E. Kelley.

    “Big Shot” is streaming on Disney+.

    This time, it’s with “The Watcher,” which is based on a terrifying true story: A family buys their dream house only to discover they’re being stalked by someone obsessed with the home — and them.

    In real life, the family never even fully moved in after being terrorized by threatening letters and ended up selling the property at a loss in 2019, five years after they had purchased it. 

    But you won’t have to wait that long to watch the dramatized version of their story, because “The Watcher” is streaming now on Netflix.

    Let’s continue with the scary stuff as this is Halloween month, of course.

    Poor Laurie Strode. The iconic “final girl” played by Jamie Lee Curtis has been trying to stay out of serial killer Michael Myers’ clutches for decades in the “Halloween” movie franchise.

    But as the new film’s title suggests, Curtis is insistent this will be her character’s last go-around with the masked murderer.

    “I need to now cut her loose and let her live in the minds and hearts of the fans that have supported her,” Curtis told Entertainment Weekly.

    So does that mean Michael finally kills off Laurie? “Halloween Ends” is now streaming on Peacock — and in movie theaters.

    In a new true crime podcast series, reality star/entrepreneur/criminal justice advocate Kim Kardashian highlights Kevin Keith’s 1994 conviction on triple homicide charges in Ohio, as well as the tireless work he and his family have since undertaken to prove his innocence.

    “Sharing people’s stories that are not just on a rap sheet will help people get comfortable and understand where someone has come from,” Kardashian told The Hollywood Reporter. “Usually, you don’t hear the other side.”

    Love her or hate her, Kardashian is making use of her enormous platform to bring attention to those she believes have suffered injustices.

    Speaking of platforms, “American Idol” judge Katy Perry is using hers to help people rediscover the magic of the late Elizabeth Taylor with podcast “Elizabeth the First,” which explores the movie star as the original influencer.

    “I’m inspired by her bold activism, her constant boss moves in business, and through it all, an unapologetic way of loving — all things I try to live in my own life,” Perry said in a statement.

    Taylor, who died at 79 in 2011, is a forever icon, and I love seeing her being celebrated this way.

    “Elizabeth the First” is streaming on Apple.

    By now, you’ve probably heard the story of comedian Ariel Elias getting a beer can lobbed at her while performing onstage. What played out is a reminder that, despite how uncivil our society has become, it’s all about how you handle what life throws your way.

    Elias was doing stand-up recently at Uncle Vinnie’s Comedy Club in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, when an audience member began grilling her on whether she had voted for President Joe Biden.

    “I wasn’t talking about politics,” Elias told CNN. “It just felt like she was looking for a fight.”

    The heckler was tossed out of the club, but the man who was seated next to her threw a beer can at Elias. It landed hard on a wall near to where she was performing.

    Rather than explode or turn the other cheek, Elias just took a sip of the remaining brew. That reaction, and determination to finish her set, has won her praise from all over.

    Madonna shared a TikTok video that has stirred debate among some of her followers.

    Let me first preface what I am about to say by stating I am a longtime admirer of Madonna.

    The singer had quite a few people talking this week when she shared a TikTok video that had some thinking she was coming out as gay.

    Others complained that the star, who has always been a huge supporter of LGBTQ rights, was “queer-baiting,” alongside broader criticism about Madonna taking to TikTok at her age.

    Madonna is not a fan of people pointing out her age (see her taking the New York Times Magazine to task in 2019), and the entertainment industry is notorious for ageism.

    Yet it can be difficult for older celebrities to strike a tone on social media that feels appropriate. Some of them, like Dionne Warwick on Twitter, have mastered it — others can come across as cringe.

    Not that Madonna has to fade away — I doubt she ever could — but she’ll likely always be judged by some, as her determination to live life on her own terms is ageless.
