  • Colorado soldiers convicted of poaching deer on Fort Carson, state land

    Two soldiers at Fort Carson were convicted of poaching mule deer on the military and state land, Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials said.

    State wildlife officials started investigating in November 2024 after a hunter reported finding a buck that appeared to be poached on the base, the agency said in a news release Tuesday.

    When a CPW officer arrived in the area, they found a partially processed buck that had been abandoned with “select cuts of meat removed and the antlers cut off,” state officials said.

    The officer found a doe 100 yards away that was also partially processed and abandoned, and both locations showed signs of illegal poaching, CPW leaders said in a news release.

    The investigating wildlife officer found evidence to identify a vehicle connected to the case and later found related pictures on social media of Army Sgt. Jacob Curtis Keyser and Staff Sgt. Juan Salcedo.

    Investigators also executed search warrants that uncovered evidence of poaching and trespassing in Keyser’s vehicle and on his phone.

    A third soldier, whom state officials did not name, was fined $900 for disposing of Keyser’s poached venison right before Keyser was interviewed by a state wildlife investigator.

  • Mountain lion illegally poached, dumped in Colorado canyon

    State investigators are searching for suspects after the body of an illegally poached mountain lion was found abandoned in a Colorado canyon last week, according to wildlife officials.

    Colorado Parks and Wildlife rangers responded to Taylor Canyon in Gunnison City Mountain Park on Friday after the mountain lion’s carcass was discovered near a group of campsites, according to a news release from the agency.

    The mountain lion, which had been shot in the chest and left in the bushes, was previously part of the agency’s mountain lion density study in Gunnison Basin, wildlife officials said in the release.

    During that study, researchers captured, marked, collared and monitored dozens of mountain lions across western Colorado, according to the agency. Nearly 100 animals were collared between Middle Park and Gunnison Basin.

    “We are looking for leads or information anyone might have that could assist us with this investigation,” CPW District Wildlife Manager Codi Prior said in a statement. “Somebody killed this lion and then dumped its carcass.”

    The poached mountain lion’s carcass was discovered three days before the start of legal mountain lion hunting season in Colorado. The season runs from Nov. 24 to March 31.

  • Authorities Search For Clackamas County Deer Poachers – KXL

    CLACKAMAS COUNTY, OR – The Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division is asking for your help in finding the poacher or poachers responsible for illegally killing four deer.  All four were butchered and, for some reason, the meat was dumped and left to rot off South Elwood Road outside the town of Colton in Clackamas County.

    On Tuesday, November 4th, 2025, a caller reported finding a large amount of deer meat and front and rear deer quarters thrown into the bushes along South Elwood Road, just east of South Benzinger Road in Colton.  A trooper with Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife responded and confirmed the report.  The trooper believes the deer had been butchered elsewhere and brought to the area where the body parts were thrown into dense vegetation on Port Blakely Tree Farm property.  It is believed that three of the deer were killed with archery equipment.

    The remains were likely dumped in the area between Friday, October 31st, 2025, and Sunday, November 2nd, 2025.

    Microwave Poached Eggs

    Looking for an easy way to poach eggs? I’ve got you.

    If you want to poach an egg (or 2!), this microwave method is by far the easiest. I first learned of this method in 2021 and haven’t made poached eggs the classic way since. In this post, I’m making 2 eggs, however the step-by-step and printable recipe is written for 1 egg. Simply double the ingredients and microwave eggs separately to ensure success.

    To Make These Microwave Poached Eggs You Will Need:

    bring water to boilbring water to boil

    Bring 1 cup of water to a boil. If making 2 eggs, boil 2 cups of water

    add vinegar to ramekinsadd vinegar to ramekins

    Meanwhile, add 1-1/4 teaspoons white vinegar to a microwave safe ramekin or bowl. If you’re making 2 eggs, you will need to make each egg in its own ramekin.

    And then crack egg(s) into shallow bowl. This is optional, but it is easier to add the egg to the hot vinegar/water bath and avoid getting splashed with hot liquids.

    Once the water is boiling, pour the water into the vinegar in the ramekin.

    Immediately –BUT CAREFULLY– add the egg slowly into the hot vinegar water.

    Use oven mitts or a thick towel to transfer the ramekin into the microwave for 30 seconds. Then carefully (use a kitchen towel or oven mitt if the ramekin is hot) remove the ramekin.

    Use a large spoon or slotted spoon to carefully and slowly, turn the egg over and then microwave for an additional 15 to 20 seconds or until whites are set.

    Once the whites are set, use a slotted spoon to remove the poached egg and drain on paper towel.

    If Making Two Eggs: Once the first egg is draining on paper towel, quickly make the second egg. Pour the other half of the boiling water (I keep it boiling on the stove) into a second ramekin with vinegar and carefully add the second egg. Microwave the second egg for 30 seconds, carefully flip the egg in the vinegar water and microwave for an additional 15 to 20 seconds OR until whites are set. Transfer poached egg to paper towel lined plate to remove excess water before serving.

    In my experience, making 2 eggs at the same time in the microwave, throws off the cook times.

    A high court in Tanzania on Friday sentenced 11 people to death for the murder of a well-known conservationist in the East African country more than five years ago.

    Anti-poaching activist Wayne Lotter, described as a “hero to many” for his anti-poaching efforts, was shot dead in August 2017 while riding in a taxi in Tanzania’s commercial capital of Dar es Salaam.

    Those sentenced to death include nine Tanzanians and two citizens of neighboring Burundi. Tanzania hasn’t carried out an execution in decades.

    Poachers in Tanzania target various wildlife, including elephants that are often killed for their tusks.

    Lotter was the director and co-founder of the PAMS Foundation, a nongovernmental organization which said he had helped to train thousands of game scouts throughout Tanzania and developed an “intelligence-based approach” to anti-poaching that had success in countering wildlife trafficking.

    Krissie Clark, who co-founded the foundation with Lotter, told CBS News in 2019 that her colleague had received multiple death threats over his work with PAMS before being killed.

    “If we really want to defeat this illegal wildlife trafficking, we have to go for the blood supply; we have to stop the money at the heart of this crime,” Clark told CBS News. 

    After the announcement of the sentences, Clark released a statement saying she and her colleagues were relieved the trial was over.

    “Wayne’s murder and the sentencing of the eleven accused should serve as a reminder to everyone that poaching and wildlife crime is devastating to all of us,” she said. “It destroys Tanzania’s extraordinary natural heritage and damages families and communities. Wildlife crime doesn’t pay.”
