  • Twitter adds ‘Official’ label for PM Modi, and some other verified accounts

Twitter adds ‘Official’ label for PM Modi, and some other verified accounts

An ‘Official’ label has been added to the Twitter handle of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and some other ministers as the US-based social media platform started rolling out a feature to distinguish between the Twitter Blue account and verified accounts.

Modi’s verified blue tick Twitter handle @narendramodi was marked ‘Official’ with a tick mark enclosed in a circle.

The same was label was also seen on the Twitter handles of Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and some other ministers.

Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, some other opposition party leaders as well as sportspersons like Sachin Tendulkar too were given that label.

This is in line with Twitter’s just-announced changes for verified accounts, as part of its new USD 8 premium subscription product.

The ‘Official’ label is given for select verified accounts including major media outlets and governments.

Twitter official Esther Crawford in a tweet said: “A lot of folks have asked about how you’ll be able to distinguish between @TwitterBlue subscribers with blue checkmarks and accounts that are verified as official, which is why we’re introducing the ‘Official’ label to select accounts when we launch.”

“Not all previously verified accounts will get the ‘Official’ label and the label is not available for purchase. Accounts that will receive it include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures,” she said.

The new Twitter Blue, she said, does not include ID verification. “It’s an opt-in, paid subscription that offers a blue checkmark and access to select features. We’ll continue to experiment with ways to differentiate between account types.”

The changes come days after the world’s richest man Elon Musk took over Twitter Inc for USD 44 billion and brought in a slew of changes, including a subscription programme and a new verification system.

He has announced a USD 8 per month price tag for the Blue Tick verification of handles.

Twitter’s chargeable blue tick verification service is expected to roll out in India in “less than a month”, Musk had said on Sunday.

“Hopefully, less than a month,” Musk tweeted in response to a Twitter user’s query on when the service is expected to be launched in India.

Earlier this month, Musk had announced that verification blue tick in front of a user’s name that authenticates an account will be charged USD 8 per month.

Twitter’s strategy to introduce a monthly charge for the verified badge has polarised users globally.

Musk, the CEO of electric car maker Tesla Inc, completed his USD 44-billion takeover of Twitter in October-end, placing the world’s richest man at the helm of one of the most influential social media apps in the world. He also fired the social media company’s four top executives, including CEO Parag Agrawal and legal executive Vijaya Gadde.

Twitter then proceeded to fire the majority of its over 200 employees in India as part of mass layoffs across the globe ordered by Musk who is looking to make the blockbuster acquisition work.

‘Extensive inquiry needed’: PM Modi on suspension bridge collapse in Gujarat’s Morbi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired another meeting to review the situation in Gujarat’s Morbi and said that a detailed and extensive inquiry was needed to find out all the aspects related to the accident.

A British-era suspension bridge on the Machchhu river in Morbi collapsed on Sunday, killing 135 people. The bridge was maintained by a private group, Oreva – which is known for making wall clocks by the name of Ajanta.

Following the collapse, the company’s role has come under the scanner.

Today, PM Modi chaired a meeting in Morbi and said: “The need of the hour is to conduct a detailed and extensive inquiry which will identify all aspects relating to this mishap.”

The Prime Minister also added that the key learnings from the inquiry must be implemented at the earliest. He said the authorities must stay in touch with the affected families and ensure that they receive all possible help in this tragic hour.

Earlier today, the Prime Minister visited the accident site and went to the local hospital where the injured are recovering. He also interacted with those involved in rescue and relief work and lauded their fortitude.

Oreva, who is at the center of the storm, had opened the bridge just days before the accident. The bridge was shut for renovation and the company was given 8-12 months time to complete the work.

However, the company inaugurated the bridge to the public five months before the deadline. The local civic body now claims that the company did not secure a clearance certificate before opening it to the public.

The Gujarat Police have so far nine people including the managers of Oreva.

Congress, AAP criticise BJP for ‘overnight makeover’ of Morbi civil hospital ahead of PM Modi’s visit

An overnight makeover of the government hospital in Gujarat’s Morbi before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to meet the survivors of the suspension bridge collapse that left 141 people dead has come under fire from the Opposition. The Prime Minister will visit the site of the incident on Tuesday afternoon. Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticised the state government for engaging in an all-night overhaul of the hospital in times of tragedy.

Congress shared pictures of the hospital on Twitter and wrote in Hindi, “Event of tragedy. Tomorrow, PM Modi will visit the civil hospital in Morbi. Before that, the work of dyeing and painting is going on there. Glazed tiles are being installed. There should be no weak points in PM Modi’s image, all arrangements are being made for it. They are not ashamed! So many people died and they are engaged in eventing.”

The AAP tweeted, “Overnight paint is being done in Morbi Civil Hospital so that the poor building does not get exposed in PM Modi’s photoshoot tomorrow. 141 people are dead, hundreds of people are missing, no action has been taken against the real culprits, but BJP workers have been covered up by doing photoshoots.”

AAP MLA and spokesperson Naresh Balyan wrote, “There are 177 bodies lying inside, the work of painting the hospital from outside is going on, because Mahamanav ji will go there tomorrow to do stunts with cameras. There is a limit to shamelessness.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Neetu Dabas retweeted the Congress’ tweet and wrote, “Congress will not be able to do anything in life, except to come down to the lows and beat drums of the end of Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.”

Meanwhile, some of the workers engaged in the cleaning job told India Today that they were brought from Rajkot for overhaul ahead of the PM’s visit. New water coolers and hospital beds were also installed.

  • PM unveils project worth Rs 22,000 cr to build Tata Group’s C-295 transport aircraft

PM unveils project worth Rs 22,000 cr to build Tata Group’s C-295 transport aircraft

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the groundwork for the C-295 aircraft manufacturing plant in Vadodara, Gujarat. Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems Limited’s joint venture will manufacture 40 C-295 military transport planes at the facility as part of a Rs 22,000 crore deal to supply 56 such planes. Airbus will supply the Rest 16 planes directly from Spain.

While laying the groundwork for the assembly plant, PM Modi stated that the aircraft manufacturing facility in Vadodara represents India’s giant leap toward aviation self-sufficiency. He stated that India will be a major hub for large aircraft maintenance, both passenger and cargo planes.

He said, “The transport aircraft that’ll be manufactured here will not only give power to our Army but also develop a new ecosystem of manufacturing aircraft… Soon, India will witness the passenger aircraft that will be made with the tag of ‘Make In India’”.

The aircraft built in India would be delivered between September 2023 and August 2025, with the first 16 fly-away aircraft scheduled to be delivered to the IAF between September 2023 and August 2025.

In September of last year, India agreed to pay Airbus Defence and Space Rs. 21,935 crore for 56 C-295 aircraft to replace the IAF’s ageing Avro-748 planes, which entered service in the early 1960s.

Under the terms of the agreement, Airbus will deliver the first 16 aircraft in ‘fly-away’ condition from its final assembly line in Seville, Spain within four years, and the remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured and assembled in India by Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) as part of the two companies’ industrial partnership.

With more than 42.5 lakh man-hours of work in the aerospace and defence sector, the project is expected to generate 600 highly skilled jobs directly, over 3,000 indirect jobs, and an additional 3,000 medium-skill employment o

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons said, “With the set-up of the Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Vadodara, the Tata Group will now be able to take aluminium ingots at one end of the value stream and turn it into a Airbus C295 aircraft for the Indian Air Force. This is a historic moment not only for the Tata Group but for the country, as it embraces the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of being truly ‘Atmanirbhar.”

The C295 is used for tactical transport of up to 71 troops or 50 paratroopers, as well as logistic operations to locations inaccessible to current heavier aircraft. It is capable of airdropping paratroops and loads, as well as casualty or medical evacuation. The aircraft can carry out special missions such as disaster response and maritime patrol.

  • PM Modi moots idea of “One Nation, One Uniform” for police; warns of forces perverting young minds

PM Modi moots idea of “One Nation, One Uniform” for police; warns of forces perverting young minds

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday mooted the idea of “One Nation, One Uniform” for police, saying it is just a suggestion for consideration and he is not trying to impose it on the states.

Addressing a “Chintan Shivir” of state home ministers through video-conferencing, Modi also warned of forces that are increasing their intellectual sphere to push the youth towards extremism and pervert the minds of coming generations.

“Every form of Naxalism, be it the one with guns or the one with pens, have to be uprooted to prevent them from misleading the youth of the country,” he said.

Modi said for the sake of the unity and integrity of the nation and with the inspiration of Sardar Patel “we can not allow any such forces to flourish in our country”.

He said such forces get significant help internationally.

About his “One Nation, One Uniform” suggestion, the prime minister said he thinks that the identity of the police forces across the country could be identical.

“The One Nation, One Uniform for police is just an idea. I am not trying to impose it on you. Just give it a thought. It may happen, it may happen in 5, 50, or 100 years. But let’s give it a thought,” Modi said.

He said this will not only ensure the manufacture of quality products because they will be used on a large scale but also will give a common identity to law enforcement personnel as people will recognise them anywhere in the country.

States can have their number or insignia, he added.

Modi also urged the state governments to review old laws and amend them to the current context as he batted for coordinated action by all the agencies to meet the emerging challenges of law and order and security.

Modi said it was “very important” to maintain a good perception of police and the “wrongs here” should be addressed.

Even though law and order is a state subject as per the Constitution, they are equally linked with the unity and integrity of the country, he said.

Modi said every state should learn, get inspired from each other and work together for internal security.

“Working together of states for internal security is a constitutional mandate as well as responsibility towards the nation,” he added.

The prime minister said all agencies — both central as well as that of states — should cooperate with each other to ensure efficiency, better outcome and protection to the common man.

He said law and order is directly linked to development and hence it is everyone’s responsibility to maintain peace.

“When the strength of the country will increase, the power of every citizen, every family will increase,” he noted.

Modi said it is very important for the entire law and order system to be reliable and stressed for maintaining a good perception of police among the people.

He said several reforms for strengthening the law and order system have taken place in the last few years.

“We need to think about a common platform for technology that can be shared by all. Best practices of one state can be shared with others,” he said, adding smart technology should be adopted for a smarter law and order system.

Referring to the circulation of fake news, Modi said fact check of such news is a must and technology plays a big role in it.

“People must be made aware of mechanisms to verify messages before forwarding them,” he said.

The prime minister said the good old system of generating human intelligence by the police and security agencies should be strengthened for achieving better results.

He asked the states not to look at the budget while selecting technology as “investment in today’s technology is a saving in the future”.

Referring to the ongoing ‘Amrit Kaal’, the prime minister said an ‘Amrit’ generation will emerge carrying the essence of the ‘Panch Pran’.

“‘The Panch Pran’ must be the guiding force for good governance,” he said.

Modi said the law and order system can be improved with the help of smart technology as maintaining law and order is a 24X7 job.

He pointed out that crime is no longer localised and instances of inter-state and international crimes are going up.

That is why mutual cooperation between state agencies as well as between central and state agencies is crucial, Modi said.

He said whether it is cybercrime or the use of drone technologies for the smuggling of weapons or drugs, the government needs to keep working towards new technologies to tackle the menace.

“The law and order system can be improved with the help of smart technology, the prime minister said, adding the 5G, along with its benefits, brings the need for a heightened alert.

Modi mentioned the ‘Police Technology Mission’ of the central government and stressed the need for a common platform as differing technologies of different states do not talk to each other.

“We should have a pan-India outlook, all our best practices should be interoperable and should have a common link,” he said.

He also talked about the decriminalisation of many things in company law as a step in this direction and asked the states to also evaluate and get rid of outdated rules and laws.

Modi said the laws enacted by the central government aim to strongly handle corruption, terrorism and hawala.

“Laws like UAPA have given strength to the system in a decisive battle against terrorism,” he said.

The prime minister also advocated the need to think about developing special capabilities for tourism-related policing.

He said tourists are the biggest and fastest ambassadors of the reputation of any place.

He also said police vehicles should never be old as it affects the efficiency of the force.

The two-day ‘Chintan Shivir’ is being organised here by the Union Home Ministry with the objective to prepare an action plan for the implementation of ‘Vision 2047’ and ‘Panch Pran’ announced in Prime Minister Modi’s Independence Day speech.

Home secretaries and director generals of police (DGPs) of states, director generals of central armed police forces (CAPFs) and central police organisations (CPOs) are attending it.

India and the UK are working on a free trade deal, which was earlier expected to be finalised by Diwali but the new administration of Liz Truss said it was no longer working on that deadline. Now Sunak at the helm, New Delhi would like to conclude the deal as early as possible.

Sunak has created history by becoming the first Indian-origin British leader to reach 10 Downing Street – the official residence of the UK Prime Minister. He was elected as Conservative Party leader by Tory MPs, who said the country needed stability and Sunak was their choice. Sunak has served as chancellor of the exchequer under former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

US President Joe Biden said the news of Rishi Sunak becoming the UK PM is “pretty astounding, a ground-breaking milestone and it matters”.

Sunak, 42, will assume the charge today from outgoing PM Liz Truss, whose tenure was cut short by her disastrous tax-cut policies that plunged the country into a deeper crisis.

A day before he was elected as party leader, Sunak said the UK was facing “a profound economic crisis”. “I want to fix our economy, unite our Party and deliver for our country,” he said announcing his bid for the top post.

  • Indian diaspora reacts to historic, inspirational’ Diwali win for UK PM-elect Rishi Sunak

Indian diaspora reacts to historic, inspirational’ Diwali win for UK PM-elect Rishi Sunak

Indian diaspora leaders and organisations in the UK went into expected overdrive on Monday, celebrating Rishi Sunak’s victory in the Conservative Party leadership race to become the Prime Minister-elect as a historic and inspirational development on Diwali.

The 42-year-old former Cabinet minister, who famously lit diyas on the steps of 11 Downing Street during his tenure as chancellor, is on the record during his last campaign saying he wants to change the India-UK relationship to make it a more two-way exchange that opens up easy access to UK students and companies in India.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Britain’s next prime minister Rishi Sunak by saying, “Warmest congratulations @RishiSunak ! As you become UK PM, I look forward to working closely together on global issues, and implementing Roadmap 2030. Special Diwali wishes to the ‘living bridge’ of UK Indians, as we transform our historic ties into a modern partnership.”

Now, elected Tory leader amid considerable economic turmoil and just as a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) with India missed its Diwali deadline, there is renewed hope that Sunak would inject momentum behind closer ties with the country of origin.

It is incredible to be able to watch this historic moment with Rishi Sunak becoming the first British Indian Prime Minister, said British Indian think tank 1928 Institute.

Many of our grandparents were British subjects and now to see someone of Indian heritage in the UK’s highest office is truly inspirational. Mr Sunak’s rise shows how the British Indian community has come a long way, and we hope this serves as an inspiration for the next generation, it said.

With the British Indian community made up of an estimated 1.7 million people, it comprises around 2.5 per cent of the total population and therefore a British Prime Minister of Indian heritage was not expected anytime soon, feels Rahul Roy-Chaudhury, Senior Fellow for South Asia at the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

The prospective FTA is likely to be revived and completed in earnest as a result of the economic stability that Rishi Sunak is expected to bring to the UK, said Roy-Chaudhury.

But, Rishi Sunak is yet to be tested on foreign policy and defence issues who he appoints as the next Defence and Foreign Secretaries will be critical in building a strong defence and security partnership, the next stage of a truly comprehensive strategic partnership with India, the strategic expert notes.

The excitement of a Sunak victory resonated among Indian student groups as well, who are hopeful that his premiership would involve championing the skills and knowledge exchange critical to the growth of both countries and not bow down to the noise on immigration from the far right .

If there is one thing we know about Rishi Sunak is that he’s a man of logic and reason. Through the summer we saw his refusal to bow down to populism in favour of rationality, said Sanam Arora, Chair of the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) the UK, with reference to Liz Truss’ populist and now-failed tax-cutting promises in the last leadership contest.

I expect that Rishi will be driven by exactly the same rationality when it comes to the India-UK partnership, where the exchange of skills is critical recognising the bizarre situation of counting international students as migrants; we call on him to be the PM who changes this, a move that can be transformative for the British economy and higher education sector.

Rishi’s is our story. A child born in the UK to immigrant parents who through sheer hard work and dedication sought to give their children a better life, with focus on education and good values, he has climbed to hold the highest public office in the land, said Professor Manoj Ladwa, Founder of India Global Forum (IGF) where Sunak first spoke of his migrant roots in early July.

In his address at the IGF annual awards in Windsor, Sunak recalled: Sixty years after my Naniji boarded a plane in East Africa, on a warm sunny evening in October, her great-grandaughters, my kids, played in the street outside our home, painted Rangoli on the doorstep, lit sparklers and diyas; had fun like so many other families on Diwali. Except the street was Downing St. And the door was the door to No. 11.

I’m incredibly proud of where I come from. It will always be an enormous part of who I am. And it brings me joy to live, and belong, in a country where, for all our faults, for all our challenges, someone like me can become Chancellor. Our task now is to make sure that’s not the end of the British Indian story, but the beginning, he said.

That statement proved prophetic this week, when Sunak’s children are poised to light diyas on the steps of No. 10 Downing Street soon.

The Opposition party’s diaspora group, Labour Convention of Indian Organisations (LCIO), also welcomed the sheer symbolism of Sunak’s win, even as it reiterated Labour’s call for a general election.

While we congratulate Rishi Sunak for shattering a glass ceiling to become our first British Indian Prime Minister and look forward to working with him to undo the damage to the UK-India trade deal wrought by his predecessors, this change in PM cannot excuse or undo the Conservative-led horror of the last years, the LCIO said.

  • ‘Spectacular innings’: PM Modi’s ‘special mention’ to Virat Kohli after big win against Pakistan

‘Spectacular innings’: PM Modi’s ‘special mention’ to Virat Kohli after big win against Pakistan

Virat Kohli’s match-winning innings against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup match in Melbourne has brought him appreciation from across the country’s political spectrum.

“The India team bags a well fought victory! Congratulations for an outstanding performance today. A special mention to Virat Kohli for a spectacular innings in which he demonstrated remarkable tenacity. Best wishes for the games ahead,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

It looked nearly impossible for India to win when they were reduced to 31/4 in less than seven overs while chasing 160. After that, Kohli and Hardik Pandya put together a 113-run stand as they began to rebuild the game. Kohli scored 82 off 53 balls while remaining undefeated, hitting six fours and four sixes, to lead his team to a four-wicket victory after Pandya was bowled for 40.

While Kohli himself reacted to the stunning victory by saying “It just happens,” political leaders were thrilled with praise for the former India captain’s brilliant knock and the Indian team’s tenacity, which brought them laurels.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah showered praises for Kohli. He tweeted, “A perfect way to start the T20 World Cup. Deepawali begins. What a cracking innings by @imVKohli. Congratulations to the entire team.”

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Indian team’s performance and lauded Kohli for his best innings.

“A phenomenal effort by Team India against Pakistan in Melbourne today. Virat Kohli played one of the finest innings of his life! This incredible victory has delighted all Indian cricket fans around the world. Congratulations to Team India on this spectacular victory,” he said.

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi wished India’s victory as “one of the greatest victories under pressure” and wished the team “best of luck” in the tournament’s remaining matches.
