  • Three Annunciation Catholic School moms demand action during town hall

    [ad_1]

Three women stood together on stage at a town hall in Plymouth, Minnesota on Sunday, bound together by the tragedy their children experienced inside Annunciation Catholic School on August 27.

“I don’t want any other parent or family to feel this misery,” said Malia Kimbrell.

Kimbrell’s 9-year-old daughter Vivian was rushed to the hospital after over 100 bullets shattered the windows of Annunciation Catholic School. Vivian was shot multiple times. Now, Vivian is recovering at home and Kimbrell is advocating for a ban on assault weapons.

“It’s more mental health resources and safer gun storage and better background checks and detecting potential threats online and improved security measures and banning assault weapons,” Kimbrell said Sunday. “If the next mass shooting happens at your child’s school, what type of weapon are you comfortable with the shooter being armed with?”

The group was brought together by Democratic Rep. Kelly Morrison as a town hall focused on gun violence prevention, for members of Minnesota’s third district.

“By taking action, that’s how we honor Harper, Fletcher and all the lives taken by gun violence,” said Carla Maldonado.

Maldonado has two children at Annunciation and described the panic she felt after she and her husband heard the gunshots that morning from their home nearby.

“We cannot accept a world where civilians have access to weapons designed for battlefields,” Maldonado said.

Stephanie Moscetti, a mother of two, also shared her fear that day. Saying her children are changed, espeically her son who was friends with Fletcher Merkel, an 8-year-old boy who was killed in the attack.

“My son was an honorary pallbearer at his friends funeral, how is this our reality?” Moscetti questioned. “Our kids deserve safe schools, they deserve safe childhoods where they can play and learn.”

About a week ago, a Minnesota Senate work group focused on addressing gun violence met for the first time, listening to pleas from some of these same parents

Gov. Tim Walz has vowed to call a special session to address the issue, though a date has not been set.

If a bill is presented, the legislation would need the support of both democrats and republicans.

House Republicans previously released their list of policies to consider in a special session, which included school security grants, more funding for mental health beds and mandatory minimum prison sentences for repeat gun offenders.

  • Minnesota dealing with low blood supply; health officials call for donations

    [ad_1]

Minnesota health officials say the state’s blood supply is critically low and are calling for action to address the problem.

“I think giving blood is one of the most important things I can do,” said Debbie Burgess of Robbinsdale, Minnesota.

Community members spent their Friday donating blood because of a shortage.

“I wasn’t planning on giving today because I’m going away next week. But I figured I might as well squeeze it in,” said Burgess.

Corey Bianchi-Rossi works for Memorial Blood Centers, which supplies blood for the majority of Minnesota hospitals.

“The inventory that we have has dipped below a two-day supply,” said Bianchi-Rossi. “Normally, we carry a five- to seven-day supply of inventory.”

The shortage forced them to declare a blood emergency on Aug. 11. Health officials are putting the blame on summertime.

“More trauma, more accidents, more need for blood combined with more donors not being available,” said Bianchi-Rossi.

When WCCO asked Bianchi-Rossi what he’d say to someone who’s never given blood and is afraid to do so, he said, “If you’re coming in for the first time or any time, always make sure you drink enough water and eat a good meal.”

Memorial Blood Centers says one unit of blood can save up to three lives.

“In reality, we can’t manufacture blood. Science hasn’t gotten there yet … so what we do is call on our donors. We need the community to step up,” said Bianchi-Rossi.

BRAINTREE – The suspect who allegedly stabbed four young girls inside a Massachusetts AMC movie theater Saturday night was “laughing the whole time,” the mother of three of the victims said.

Four girls, ages 9 to 17, were stabbed Saturday inside the Braintree AMC theater around 6 p.m. They were all hospitalized, but are expected to survive.

Suspect was “laughing the whole time”

Lisa Dembowski is the mother of three of the girls who were stabbed. She was not there at the time of the incident, but said the group had just arrived for a screening of “IF” and the girls were the only four people in the theater.

“They had just sat down, they had just got their concessions. I guess he came up behind them, they were in like the second row. He came up behind them. My oldest was leaned over to get something, he got her in the back. My other daughter in the chest. My last daughter across her arm,” Dembowski said. “Laughing the whole time. Then [stabbed] their friend and ran off. The two older girls chased him outside, then they realized what was going on.”

An employee described the suspect as wearing “an oversized trench coat, sunglasses, and a long blonde wig.” Police said the suspect fled the movie theater in a black SUV, but video footage allowed investigators to obtain a license plate number.

    Second stabbing in Plymouth

A second attack was reported around 7 p.m. on Saturday at McDonald’s inside a Plymouth rest stop. A 21-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man were hospitalized with stab wounds but are both expected to survive. It appears the incidents were related, police said.

Massachusetts State Police chased the SUV until it crashed in Sandwich and a suspect was taken into custody. According to the WBZ-TV I-Team, the suspect is believed to be connected to a murder in Deep River, Connecticut.

Police have not yet released the suspect’s name or what they are charged with.

“A pretty sick individual to harm children”

Dembowski said the children were traumatized by the incident.

“They don’t want to go to the movies ever again,” she said. “Shaken up. They are physically fine. Kids are resilient. But I think they are terrified that they could just go to a movie on a Saturday night, and this could happen. Someone could just walk into a movie theater and someone could do this.”

Dembowski praised the actions of first responders and medical staff. She also said her oldest daughter acted quickly to keep the younger girls calm during a hectic situation.

“More and more this is happening and it makes parents sick to bring their kids anywhere, or let them go anywhere without them. I absolutely feel that way,” said Dembowski, who is a guidance counselor at a Massachusetts school. “I hope he gets what he deserves. I understand mental health. I’m a counselor. I understand it. I think it’s a pretty sick individual to harm children.”
