The Kitchen Hardware That Makes Your Home Look Instantly Dated (and What to Do Instead!)

The kitchen isn’t just a place for cooking and eating — it’s the central hub of the home and a great place to show off your personality. However, outdated hardware can easily tarnish the aesthetic, both metaphorically and literally. From worn-out cabinet handles to old-fashioned faucet designs, these seemingly minor details can make a big impact, turning a once-trendy kitchen into a very dated space.

To be sure your kitchen is up to date (and stays that way), I talked to top interior designers to learn about which kitchen hardware will stay on trend for years to come — and, just as importantly, which ones make your space look instantly dated.

    Outdated Kitchen Hardware

I hate to break it to you, but crystal knobs are out. According to Joyce Elizabeth Huston, cofounder and lead designer at Decorilla, “not only do they look dated, but they look out of style and cheap at the same time.” While these kinds of knobs were once loved for their glamorous appeal, they’ve fallen out of favor. Most have intricate designs that often clash with the sleek, minimalist style that characterizes contemporary kitchens.

    2. Highly Decorative Cabinet Handles

As the saying goes, less is more, and highly decorative cabinet handles can be too much for the space. Their elaborate patterns and ornate detailing don’t complement kitchens like they used to. “Handles that have intricate designs can look beautiful, but they will also make your kitchen feel and look less contemporary,” explains TileCloud interior designer Courtney Cole.

Plus, practicality plays a role in why they aren’t as popular; the complex designs can make them hard to clean, letting dust and grime accumulate in the crevices. As Huston says, “They definitely were used in the 1800s, but not anymore.”

“If you want your hardware to be modern, then ceramic knobs are out,” Huston says. Their colorful and unique patterns, while adding a touch of rustic or vintage charm, now seem out of place in modern kitchens, which more often highlight clean lines and minimalist design. “[Ceramic knobs] are pretty common in older homes, but because they were so popular decades ago, they’ll make your home feel a bit stuck in the past,” Cole adds. What’s more, ceramic knobs can be fragile and prone to chipping or cracking, making them less durable than other hardware.

    4. Overly Industrial-Themed Hardware

Overly industrial-themed hardware was once a top choice when it came to adding a rugged, edgy flare to kitchens, but it has started to feel dated in recent years. “While it became popular during the ‘farmhouse’ era, the pieces will instantly date your space,” says Will Zhang, director of design and product innovation at Emtek. “With the kitchen being a place we spend so much of our time, it’s better to avoid anything too trend-focused and instead opt for timeless pieces.”

These overly industrial hardware pieces often feature heavy, bulky designs with raw finishes like exposed screws, dark metals, and rough textures, which can make a space feel more like a factory than a home kitchen. While industrial elements can add character, when overdone, they can overwhelm the space and make it feel less warm and welcoming.

    Timeless Kitchen Hardware

Don’t worry, I also asked the experts what you should opt for instead of the dated features above. “If you want your kitchen to look more contemporary and modern, you should look for products that are more streamlined and polished in the way they look,” Cole says.

“When it comes to kitchen hardware, the simpler the knob or the pull the better,” Huston explains. “This Kela Matte Black Metal Cabinet is a great option because it has a sleek, simple, contemporary design. Black is my favorite because it’s sophisticated yet very versatile.” Additionally, one of the best things about simple knobs is that they’re minimalistic, making them timeless even if other parts of your kitchen change. “This Center to Center Bar Pull is another classic yet modern option that is great for the more traditional person but also has a very sleek aesthetic,” she adds.

    2. Brushed Nickel Hardware

Without a doubt, brushed nickel hardware has a classic appeal. “Hardware in a brushed nickel colorway will make your kitchen look timeless and elegant, but without the dated feeling that sometimes comes with timelessness,” Cole says. Plus, brushed nickel can seamlessly hide fingerprints and smudges.

“Another modern option is to go for chrome hardware,” Cole says. “The shine of chrome makes a kitchen look more clean, and because it reflects light, will make the space look more open and warm. This is one of my favorites in the kitchen, particularly if you want an über-modern aesthetic.” What’s more, the polished surface of chrome hardware creates a clean, contemporary look that complements a variety of kitchen styles, from minimalist to industrial.

The Final Verdict on Kitchen Hardware

“When making selections, it’s important to ask yourself if this is a decision you will still agree with in five-plus years,” Zhang says. “Additionally, I always recommend considering if the hardware works outside of the kitchen by taking into account the home’s theme and architecture. Finding continuity between your kitchen hardware and the home’s overall aesthetic typically leads to decisions that work better and last longer.” With all of these considerations in mind, now you’ll know exactly what to pick when you opt for kitchen hardware.

  • My Secret for Making THE Perfect Aperol Spritz in Seconds (Everyone Loves Them!)

My Secret for Making THE Perfect Aperol Spritz in Seconds (Everyone Loves Them!)

    [ad_1]

We independently select these products—if you buy from one of our links, we may earn a commission. All prices were accurate at the time of publishing.

If there’s one drink that’s my go-to for summer, it’s an Aperol spritz. I usually order one whenever I dine at an outdoor cafe or restaurant because it immediately transports me back to the piazzas of my favorite vacation destination, Italy, and I can almost ignore the fact that there’s an NYC garbage truck crushing awful-smelling waste just 10 feet away from my table. What I can’t ignore, however, is the fact that I’m paying double what I’d be charged in Italy — and I’m not even getting a free side of olives and potato chips.

This brings me to my next point: I could buy all the fixings to make spritzes at home — Aperol, Prosecco, club soda, and an orange for garnish — but that can get costly and even wasteful. I live alone, and unless I’m having friends over and fixing drinks for them, chances are good that the unused portions of Prosecco and club soda will sit in my fridge for days and lose their fizz. Thankfully, I found the ultimate solution when I was offered the chance to try the Aperol Spritz Ready to Serve.

What Is Aperol Spritz Ready to Serve?

Aperol Spritz Ready to Serve is a pre-made Aperol spritz that comes in single-serve glass bottles that are sold in packs of four for $20. Basically, the only work you have to do is pop open the top, pour the cocktail into a glass of ice, and add an optional orange slice. You’ve created a foolproof spritz in seconds, and you don’t have to worry about getting the measurements right or having large bottles cluttering up your countertop and your fridge.

Why I Love Aperol Spritz Ready to Serve

Opening a bottle of Aperol Spritz Ready to Serve makes me feel like a master mixologist. Each glass I pour is absolutely perfect, every single time: Crisp, refreshing, infused with orange, and slightly bitter (aren’t we all?). But what I really love is that Aperol Spritz Ready to Serve is ideal for those who live solo and in small spaces. Rather than having to find a spot for full-sized bottles of Prosecco, Aperol, and club soda, I can keep a stash of four mini cocktails chilling in my fridge, with plenty of room to spare. I also appreciate that I can enjoy a single glass and not have to deal with leftover opened bottles of sparkling ingredients going flat.

While Aperol Spritz Ready to Serve may seem best suited to summer, I’m keeping it stocked in my apartment all year round. It saves me both time and money, and the cocktails make any occasion feel more special, whether I’m having a holiday get-together with friends or relaxing on my rooftop, dreaming of a holiday in Italy.

Place the steaks on the grill. Cover and cook until dark grill marks form on the bottom, 3 to 4 minutes. Flip the steaks, cover again, and cook until grill marks form on the second side, 3 to 4 minutes. Check the temperature: For medium-rare, an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of a steak should register 120ºF to 125ºF. If the steaks are not ready, continue to grill, flipping every minute or so, until the steak reaches the right temperature. If the steaks are browning too quickly, turn a gas grill down to medium-high or move the steaks to a cooler part of a charcoal grill.

  • This “Amazing” Toaster Oven Is Even Better Than My Air Fryer (It’s My New Favorite Appliance!)

This “Amazing” Toaster Oven Is Even Better Than My Air Fryer (It’s My New Favorite Appliance!)

    [ad_1]

We independently select these products—if you buy from one of our links, we may earn a commission. All prices were accurate at the time of publishing.

I’ve always been a toaster guy — when I moved in with my girlfriend, the first hill I chose to die on was keeping my old two-slot toaster, since I have two pieces of multigrain bread with eggs every morning for breakfast. However, I’ve never been a toaster oven guy, since I always thought my regular oven could handle whatever I needed to toast or roast. Over the years, my position on that softened (I also moved into an apartment with a comically small oven that takes forever to preheat), so I broke down and got an air fryer, which turned out to be a great addition to my kitchen. Recently, though, I had my mind changed again by a very special appliance from Panasonic: the FlashXpress Toaster Oven. It’s sleek, cool-looking, and seriously effective — plus, it has a few features that set it apart from the rest of the competition. (And, it’s on sale right now!)

What Is the Panasonic FlashXpress Toaster Oven?

This compact, easy-to-use toaster oven from Panasonic lets you toast, bake, brown, and reheat — no preheat required. It features two infrared oven heating elements, a spacious design, and six preset cooking functions. The baking rack is also connected to the oven door, which pulls the rack toward you as the door is opened so you don’t have to stick your hand inside and risk burning yourself. Plus, the auto shut-off helps prevent overcooking and burning. And, at just 13x12x10.25 inches, it’s a dream for small spaces and apartment kitchens.

Why I Love the Panasonic FlashXpress Toaster Oven

I was immediately sold on this toaster oven after whipping up some sourdough toast. It was so quick, easy, and effective, I knew this was going to be a great addition to my apartment kitchen. It also helps that it’s cool-looking in a minimalist way, it’s incredibly easy to clean, and has a surprisingly deep cooking area. My favorite part is that when you turn the light on, whatever you’re toasting is strikingly visible because of the crystal-clear glass, which can help you keep an eye on the level of browning. It also tucks neatly into a corner since it’s not superwide like most toaster ovens. I’m not the only one who’s a fan, either. “I bought mine three years ago,” one reviewer wrote. “It is so accurate, and so useful I almost never use the full oven I have next to it OR the microwave. It uses infrared elements so there is no preheat required. Just instant on. It is just big enough to take an 11-cup Pyrex rectangular baking dish, so it can cook a meal for 4. The digital timed bake means you can set and forget. It is tiny but seems roomy on the inside … It honestly is all you need unless you have a big family.”

  • This Space-Saving Rolling Cart Doubled the Storage in My Kitchen

This Space-Saving Rolling Cart Doubled the Storage in My Kitchen

    [ad_1]

We independently select these products—if you buy from one of our links, we may earn a commission. All prices were accurate at the time of publishing.

Not only is the storage in my small kitchen unsatisfactory, but the kitchen also leads into the living room in an open-floor layout, which I personally don’t enjoy. To make matters worse, for a while, me and my roommates’ dishes, small appliances, and pantry items were spilling out of the cabinets and onto almost every available inch of counter space, making this general common area look messy and unorganized. We eventually added a couple sets of shelves, but that didn’t fully alleviate the problem. In my previous apartment, my roommate there had had a rolling island, and I figured this might be the only thing that could actually help us organize the kitchen for good. When browsing different carts online, I came across the HOMCOM rolling kitchen cart on Home Depot’s website.

I opted to try the cart because it looked like it had adequate storage, and I figured it could break up my common area into two separate spaces. Plus, its clean design and black cabinets would blend in with the rest of my furniture. Now that I’ve had the cart for a few months, I wish I’d gotten it as soon as I moved in. Best of all, it’s under $200 at regular retail price and currently on sale for just $136!

What is the HOMCOM Rolling Kitchen Cart?

The cart measures 41 inches wide, almost 36 inches tall, and extends back 18 inches, so although it’s not too big for tiny kitchens, it can still hold a lot. Its impressive storage capacity is also thanks to its two generous cabinets, which each have two tall shelves that are able to accommodate anything from dry goods to your blender or stand mixer. Above that, you get two drawers that measure 16.5 inches wide and 7.5 inches tall, which is enough height so you don’t have to worry about whether bar tools, coffee accessories, or spice jars will fit. The black cabinets contrast nicely against a light-colored rubberwood top, which serves as a great butcher block or general meal prep area. As for the wheels, they roll smoothly and therefore won’t scratch your floors should you choose to move the cart. To keep it stationary, however, two of the wheels lock with easily flippable brakes.

One piece of advice I have is to avoid putting too much weight on the upper interior shelves, as they’re a bit thin. You could probably get away with putting items that weigh up to 20 lbs. on each one. As a result, I’d put heavier items, like small appliances and bottles of oil, on the lower shelves. Regarding the cart’s assembly, my roommate was able to put it together in about two hours, while I helped minimally by holding certain parts together as she screwed the nails in. It’s definitely a two-person job, but the instructions were detailed and helpful.

Why I Love the HOMCOM Rolling Kitchen Cart

Before acquiring the rolling cart, every cabinet and drawer in our kitchen was stuffed with plates, dish towels, snacks, and other miscellaneous items, to the point where it was hard to find space for groceries and new buys. The counters were also lined with tea and coffee gear, as well as bottles of olive oil and spice jars, making meal prep a bit difficult. Once our cart was assembled, we were able to clear up the counters by placing the oil bottles and other ingredients on one of the lower shelves and the spices and tea bags in the drawers. We also decluttered the kitchen sink area by storing cutting boards on a shelf, freed up kitchen drawer space by placing oven mitts and dish rags inside the cart, and also relieved the storage closet of some clutter by placing cat food and bowls on another shelf. Suffice to say, the cart made a huge difference in my kitchen’s organization.

I also love this product’s light wood top, which is a great little spot for meal prep. Before, there was only enough counter space for one person to cook at a time, but now there’s enough surface area for two of us to make dinner at once. And, it’s so easy to clean. A couple of passes with surface cleaner and a Swedish dishcloth, and it looks as good as new.

Finally, I couldn’t be happier with the placement of the cart. Before, the kitchen and living room were one long, conjoined space. But we put it in between the two areas, so now it feels like we have a cozy little living room that’s separate from the kitchen. What’s more, the cart doesn’t budge once the wheels are locked.

If you’ve been thinking about getting your own rolling kitchen cart, I highly recommend this one. Not only does it look great, but it also holds a lot of stuff and is every bit as practical as I had hoped. Plus, for that low price, it’s a no-brainer.

Buy: HOMCOM Rolling Kitchen Cart, $135.95 (normally $169.94)

These “Delicious” $5 Simmer Sauces Make Weeknight Dinners So Much Easier (I Always Have Two in My Pantry!)

    [ad_1]

We independently select these products—if you buy from one of our links, we may earn a commission. All prices were accurate at the time of publishing.

If you know me, then you’d know that I love cooking and rolling up my sleeves for a big culinary project. I particularly love making sauces and stocks with tons of flavor that comes from slowly (keyword: slowly) simmering meat, bones, veggies, and herbs in a big pot, then reducing it for hours until I’m left with a delicious vat of savory goodness. However, I’m not exactly able to embark on an hours-long culinary tour de force every night of the week — especially when I’m working in the office and have to commute to and from my apartment. By the time I change, go to the gym, come back, and shower, it’s usually around 8 p.m., and only then can I start working on dinner. That’s why I keep my pantry stocked with quick and easy items that let me eat delicious, high-quality food without the hassle. Lately, I had the opportunity to test out the SOMOS Simmer Sauces, and when SOMOS says it brings the quality of a Mexican restaurant into your kitchen, it’s not kidding.

What Are the SOMOS Simmer Sauces?

SOMOS Simmer Sauces are incredibly versatile pantry staples you can keep on hand to spice up your weeknight meals without the hassle. Available in a slew of flavors — Taco, Fajita, Green Enchilada, and Red Enchilada — the simmer sauces can fit every occasion. (There’s also Al Pastor, but it’s currently sold out.) And at just $10 for a two-pack of six-serving jars, it’s an incredibly affordable way to add flavor to your dishes. SOMOS uses fresh ingredients to bring the savory and delicious flavors of a Mexican restaurant directly to your kitchen at home.

Why I Love the SOMOS Simmer Sauces

Personally, the idea of jarred sauces always felt a bit like cheating to me, but after a long day of work, the last thing I want to do is put more energy into a complicated sauce. That’s when these SOMOS Simmer Sauces come in clutch. They store easily, taste delicious, and are made with high-quality ingredients, which makes me feel better about slathering my meats and veggies in this stuff. The various flavors are great for keeping some diversity in the dishes, and they’re some of the most affordable sauces of their kind I’ve come across. We’ve used them for taco bowls, fajitas, enchiladas made ahead of time, and even as a topping for some salads. They’re also super versatile, and I’m planning on trying them out with marinating meats to pop on the grill come this year’s Independence Day. And if you’re running out of ideas, check out the company’s website for a ton of recipes that coincide with each jar of sauce, with everything from Chicken Enchilada Soup and Al Pastor Chicken Tacos to Cauliflower Tinga Tostadas and more.

So if you’re looking for a way to add some high-quality flavor to your low-effort weeknight meals, you can’t go wrong with the SOMOS simmer sauces. They’re super versatile, easy to store, and affordable. Plus, you’ll be able to save all your culinary energy for the weekend!

We Tested (and Rated) All of Omsom’s Saucy Noodle Flavors — And There Was One Clear Favorite

    [ad_1]

We independently select these products—if you buy from one of our links, we may earn a commission. All prices were accurate at the time of publishing.

Welcome to The Test Kitchn, where we put some of our — and your! — favorite products to the test, so you can make more informed (and delicious) grocery shopping decisions. We know life can get pretty hectic, which is why we’re trying out different products on your behalf. (Kind of like our sister site Apartment Therapy’s Personal Shopper!) Looking for more great deals, food news, and product reviews? Be sure to sign up for our Cook/Shop newsletter for the latest sales and must-have kitchen finds.

What We Tested: In this installment of The Test Kitchn, we tested out all the flavors from the Omsom Saucy Noodle Sampler. Omsom is an editor-favorite brand that was started by two sisters with the mission to bring proud, loud Asian flavors to your fingertips any day of the week. The sampler includes 10 boxes of noodles (20 total servings) with three packs of the Coconut Lemongrass Curry flavor, three packs of the Soy Garlic flavor, two packs of the Chili Sesame flavor, and two packs of the Garlic Black Pepper flavor. These are air-dried, never fried noodles made with no artificial flavors or preservatives — and they’re ready in just 4 minutes. The noodles are also available à la carte. In addition to noodles, Omsom sells sauces, sets, and merch.

Meet Our Testers: This week, we have Ivy Peterson, manager, Brand Strategy & Innovation; Morgan Pryor, commerce editorial assistant; Nikol Slatinska, shopping writer; and myself, senior commerce editor. We’re all noodle lovers, so for these to score highly, they’ll have to stand out from the rest of the competition.

How We Tested: These Omsom Saucy Noodles are exactly what they sound like: quick-heating noodles with flavor packets that have way more sauce than anything else I’ve seen in this category currently on the market. To cook them, you can either use a pot of boiling water on the stovetop (4 minutes), a microwave (6 minutes), or an electric kettle (6 minutes depending on the heat of the water). I opted for the usual break room stovetop setup, and after whipping up four batches of noodles — which only took about 10 minutes using just two pots and burners — we were ready to sample.

Coconut Lemongrass Curry: Personally, I thought the Coconut Lemongrass Curry was the best out of all the flavors, but I was alone in that department. However, there were some other fans, including Ivy, who said that “I really liked this classic curry lemongrass flavor with a subtle spice. I think it would be great with chicken and broccoli, and it feels lighter than the other flavors.”

Soy Garlic: Out of all the testers, Morgan loved the Soy Garlic flavor the most, explaining that, “This was a good in-between flavor compared with the others, and I could definitely eat this on the regular.” I liked this one, too, but it wasn’t as punchy as the other ones, which is why it didn’t score as high in my book. Nikol and Ivy felt the same, but while it wasn’t our favorite, it was still delish.

Chili Sesame: I really liked the Chili Sesame flavor, and it came in at the second-best in my rankings, since I really liked the pronounced sesame flavor. Nikol thought so. too, saying that it has “just the right amount of spice without being too hot.” Morgan agreed, saying, “Loved this one! It had a nice kick and was a bit tingly without being too overwhelming, and it didn’t overshadow the flavors.”

Garlic Black Pepper: Well, folks, here’s our winner: Garlic Black Pepper! This was a tenth of a point away from getting a perfect five-star rating, and we can confidently say that it was the unanimous favorite. “I found that it had the most interesting flavor with the fish sauce, and it had a creamier texture,” Morgan said. Ivy agreed, saying that “It has a really interesting, rich flavor that’s almost creamy. I can definitely see myself reaching for this on a weeknight when I want something comforting.”

Good to Know: The Omsom noodles have two servings per pack, but we think the noodles alone are enough for one person to handle if they’re hungry. That being said, if you’re planning on adding meats and veggies to your bowl, each packet could easily be split between two people.
