Watch: Passenger plane crashes into Lake Victoria in Tanzania, rescue ops continue

Tanzania’s largest privately owned airline Precision Air’s plane, on Sunday, had crashed into Africa’s largest lake ‘Lake Victoria’ in Bukoba, Tanzania due to bad weather shortly before landing.
A passenger plane crashed into Lake Victoria in Tanzania while attempting to land in stormy weather at an airport in the lakeside city of Bukoba, the state broadcaster said. According to reports, nearly 50 people were on the flight.
At least 26 people were rescued from the plane, the airline said in a statement, adding that no deaths had been confirmed.
Video footage, that circulated online, showed the plane almost fully submerged with only its green and brown-coloured tail visible above the water line.
According to the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) report, it is not known how many passengers were on board the Precision Air flight or whether there were any fatalities. The aircraft, which had departed from the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, “fell in Lake Victoria this morning due to storms and heavy rains”, TBC reported.
A witness told the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) he saw the plane flying unsteadily as it approached the airport in poor visibility conditions, saying it took a turn for the airport but missed and went into the lake.
Rescue boats were deployed, and emergency workers were continuing to pull trapped passengers from the plane, TBC reported.
Albert Chalamila, the chief administrator of Tanzania’s Kagera region, said, Rescue workers were in touch with the pilots in the cockpit and were attempting to pull the plane from the lake.
TBC footage showed scores of residents standing along the shoreline and others wading into the shallow waters, as rescuers carried on with their efforts.
Precision Air identified the plane as flight PW 494 and said it was “involved in an accident as it was approaching Bukoba Airport”. The airline’s statement gave no further details.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, in a Twitter post, said, “I have received with sadness the news of the accident involving Precision Air’s plane.”
She also called for calm as the rescue operation continued. “Let’s be calm at this moment when rescuers are continuing with the rescue mission while praying to God to help us,” Hassan said.

Russian fighter jet crashes into building in Siberia, killing 2 pilots

Moscow — A Russian warplane crashed into a residential building in the Siberian city of Irkutsk Sunday, killing both crewmembers — the second incident in less than a week in which a combat jet has crashed in a residential area.
The accidents appeared to reflect the growing strain that the fighting in Ukraine has put on the Russian air force.
Irkutsk Gov. Igor Kobzev said the Su-30 fighter jet came down on a private, two-story building housing two families. There were no casualties on the ground.Irkutsk, a major industrial center of more than 600,000 in eastern Siberia, is home to an aircraft factory producing the Su-30s.
The Su-30 is a supersonic twin-engine, two-seat fighter that has been a key component of the Russian air force and also has been used by China, India and many other countries.
The United Aircraft Corporation, a state-controlled conglomerate of Russian aircraft-making plants, said in a statement that the plane came down during a training flight before its delivery to the air force. The jet carried no weapons during the flight.
The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately known and an official probe has started.A surveillance cam video posted on Russian social networks showed the fighter coming down in a nearly vertical dive. Other videos showed the building engulfed by flames and firefighters deployed to extinguish the blaze.

The crash came less than a week after another Russian warplane crashed near an apartment building in the Sea of Azov port of Yeysk and exploded in a giant fireball, killing 15 and injuring another 19.
Sunday’s crash was the 11th reported noncombat crash of a Russian warplane since Moscow sent its troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24. Military experts have noted that as the number of Russian military flights increased sharply during the fighting, so did the crashes.

Russian warplane crashes in residential area, killing at least 4 people and igniting massive blaze

A Russian warplane crashed Monday into a residential area in a Russian city on the Sea of Azov after suffering engine failure, leaving at least four people dead, three of whom died when they jumped from upper floors of a nine-story apartment building to escape a massive blaze.
A Su-34 bomber came down in the port city of Yeysk after one of its engines caught fire during takeoff for a training mission, the Russian Defense Ministry said. It said both crew members bailed out safely, but the plane crashed into a residential area, causing a fire as tons of fuel exploded on impact.
Authorities said at least four residents were killed, six were missing and 25 others were injured, including eight people who were in grave condition.
Vice governor of the region, Anna Menkova, said three of the four victims died when they jumped from the upper floors of the building in a desperate attempt to escape the flames, according to the RIA-Novosti news agency.

The authorities reserved emergency rooms at local hospitals and scrambled medical aircraft. At least 17 apartments were affected by the fire, and 250 residents were evacuated and provided with temporary accommodations.
The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin was informed about the crash and ordered the ministers of health and emergencies along with the local governor to head to the site. Yeysk, a city of 90,000, is home to a big Russian air base.
Several hours after the crash, regional Gov. Veniamin Kondratyev said that emergency services managed to contain the fire, making the evacuation of residents in adjacent buildings unnecessary.
Surveillance cam videos posted on Russian messaging app channels showed a plane exploding in a giant fireball. Other videos showed an apartment building engulfed by flames and loud bangs from apparent detonation of the warplane’s weapons.

Oksana, a local resident who declined to give her last name, told the AFP news service the area was cordoned off.
“There could be an explosion. Everything is burning inside. There is smoke,” she told AFP.
She said she was stuck in traffic when she heard the news.
“I’m in shock obviously. My child was alone at home. We already used to go to sleep with fear every day — Mariupol is just across from us,” she said.

Details emerge about Virginia plane crash that killed 23-year-old flight instructor and injured student pilot

An investigation at a Virginia airport has revealed that a student pilot was flying a small plane when it crashed, killing the flight instructor, Virginia State Police said in a statement Friday. The crash occurred upon takeoff Thursday afternoon at the Newport News-Williamsburg Airport.

The single-engine Cessna 172 was piloted by Oluwagbohunmi Ayomide Oyebode, 18, state police said. During takeoff, Oyebode tried to pull the craft up at too steep of an angle. That caused the engine to stall in the air, and the aircraft crashed. It had reached an altitude of about 100 feet.
Oyebode, of Hanover, Maryland, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, state police said. The flight instructor who died was Viktoria Theresie Izabelle Ljungman, 23, of Williamsburg, Virginia. Another 18-year-old male student who was on board was also taken to a hospital.

Ljungman, a Hampton University graduate, shared her love of flying on her Instagram account “viktoriathepilot” where she posted images from the cockpit. One post reveals she got her flight instructor license this April.
Charlie Hudson, a former tennis player at Hampton, told the Daily Press that he was friends with Ljungman, who had competed on the women’s tennis team.
“I remember when I first met her, that’s all she ever wanted to do. She wanted to be a commercial pilot,” Hudson told the newspaper.
Hampton University graduate Anastasiia Romanova-Hill told CBS affiliate WTKR-TV that several years ago Ljungman, a native of Sweden, reached out to her on Facebook as she was trying to determine which college to attend.
“She’s definitely a kind person who was curious and wanted to discover new things,” said Romanova-Hill.
