  • Philadelphia police spread holiday cheer to families with ‘Shop with a Cop’ event

Philadelphia police are spreading holiday cheer and ensuring hundreds of deserving families have what they need this season.

On Thursday, the Philadelphia Police Department hosted its 5th annual Shop with a Cop event at the Walmart in South Philadelphia on Columbus Boulevard.

Officials noted that this year’s event was the largest Shop with a Cop event to date, with nearly 600 families participating.

Families, who police identified as most in need, participated in a day filled with shopping, festivities, and community spirit.

Festivities included a children’s petting zoo, mummers performers, face painting, games, and so much more.

Officials said that during the event, each child also received a $150 Walmart gift card, lunch and the opportunity to take home seasonal clothing and school supplies.

“When you have the opportunity to give kids gifts during this Christmas, especially during these challenging times, when a lot of families can’t afford it. What a special day,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told NBC10. “It takes you back to those days as a child, coming down and having toys under the tree. I think about the children out here today who won’t experience that. If you could bring that experience to them. I’m just so proud of the support we received, and more importantly, the police officers who volunteered their time.”

This event was made possible with the support of the police department’s long-time partners, the Philadelphia Police Foundation and Walmart.

  • Kada Scott’s family invites public to her funeral ‘to join in celebrating her life’

The memorial service for Kada Scott, the 23-year-old East Mount Airy woman who was kidnapped and killed last month, will be open to the public, the family announced.

The funeral will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ, located at 6401 Ogontz Ave., and be hosted by Meachem & Prioleau Funeral Home.

MOREPenn data breach included info about Joe Biden and ex-university president Liz Magill, hackers claim

“Because of the overwhelming number of people who loved Kada and wish to honor her memory, the family has decided to open the funeral service to the public,” said a statement from the funeral home. “All who wish to attend are welcome to join in celebrating her life, provided they do so with reverence, respect and compassion.”

Seating will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. In honor of Scott’s “beautiful spirit and bright personality,” guests are asked to dress in shades of pink for the service.

A fundraising campaign that was set up on GoFundMe to cover the funeral expenses had amassed over $23,500 as of Wednesday afternoon.

“We are profoundly grateful for everyone who stood by us — those who donated, shared her story and prayed for her safe return,” a family statement on the page reads. “Our hope is that her story will continue to bring awareness and resources to other families still searching for their loved ones. … Thank you for standing with us, for keeping Kada’s memory alive and for helping us turn her light into hope for others.”

Scott disappeared on Oct. 4, shortly after showing up to work at a Chestnut Hill assisted living facility. Two weeks later, her body was found buried in a shallow grave behind Ada H.H. Lewis Middle School in East Germantown

The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office report said Scott was fatally shot in the head and declared her death a homicide.

Keon King, 21, has been charged with kidnapping, murder, arson and other charges related to the case and is being held without bail. He was arrested earlier this year for allegedly kidnapping another woman, throwing her into his car and assaulting her. Charges against him were dropped in May after the woman and a witness failed to show up to two court hearings, but they were refiled after King was arrested in the Scott case.

  • Protesters march in University City after police dismantle Penn’s encampment

Protesters march in University City after police dismantle Penn’s encampment

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Pro-Palestinian protesters marched near the University of Pennsylvania Friday night hours after police dismantled a two-week encampment at the Ivy League campus in Philadelphia.

At one point, the group stood outside the official residence of the Interim President Larry Jameson. Several people entered the gate of the property before police officers moved in.

Protesters demonstrate outside of the Penn president’s residence on May 10, 2024.

It remains unclear if Jameson uses the property, which is located on the 3800 block of Walnut Street.

Around 10 p.m., Chopper 6 was overhead as the group marched east up Chestnut Street toward Drexel University’s campus before dispersing for the night.

Earlier in the morning, police officers, some in riot gear, took action around daybreak to remove protesters from an encampment that was in place for 16 days. School officials said protesters were given warnings and the chance to leave without being detained.

Initially, officials said 33 people, including faculty members and seven students, were among those arrested and charged with trespass, the school said. Later, school officials said nine students were among those arrested and that the remainder were people who had no affiliation with Penn.

Dozens of protesters arrested as police clear encampment at the University of Pennsylvania

Upon searching the encampment, Penn police recovered several long lengths of heavy gauge chains, as well as smaller chains with nuts and bolts attached that police said could be used as weapons, officials said.

Because this was an operation led by Penn police, the Philadelphia D.A.’s Office has no plans to file charges against any of the protesters.

Police have begun arriving at the University of Pennsylvania campus amid heightened calls for the 2-week pro-Palestinian encampment to disband.

By mid-morning College Green, the site of the encampment, had been cleared out, though fences remained up to prevent people from accessing the area.

Protest sympathizers also gathered at 34th and Walnut streets on Friday morning.

Some sat down on the street in an effort to form a blockade to stop traffic, including police vehicles. Others yelled into the crowd as officers surrounded them.

Some sympathizers of the protesters also gathered at 34th Street and Walnut streets on Friday morning.

The decision to forcibly remove the protesters and haul them off to jail outraged Penn faculty member Tulia Falleti.

She said she will resign as chair of the faculty Senate after Penn’s actions on Friday.

“I can no longer work collaboratively with an administration that has arrested its own students,” Falleti said.

Students on campus say they were hopeful for a peaceful end to the saga. However, third-year student Ahmed Abdella said Penn administrators needed to do a much better job at bringing both Jewish and pro-Palestinian students together to hear each other out.

“I have Jewish friends who feel unsafe. I have Palestinian friends who feel like the campus doesn’t care about them at all. So, at the end of the day, I think what we need is more real discussion. We need our president to actually go in there,” Abdellah said.

The operation to clear the encampment was largely peaceful, compared to the chaos that has erupted on college campuses in other states.

During the two-week-long encampment, the protesters had demanded Penn disclose its investments and cut ties with businesses that support Israel.

Gov. Shapiro condemned encampment hours before police moved in

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro weighed in on Thursday, saying that is was “past time for the university to act, to address this, to disband this encampment and restore order and safety on campus.”

He also called the situation at Penn “unstable” and “unacceptable” just hours before the encampment was dismantled.

“All students should feel safe when they’re on campus. All students have a legal right to feel safe on campus, and the University of Pennsylvania has an obligation to their safety. It is past time for the university to act, to address this to disband the encampment and to restore order and safety on campus,” Shapiro said.

Philadelphia police in riot gear moved in Friday morning on the pro-Palestinian encampment at the University of Pennsylvania campus

Penn students placed on mandatory leave speak out

The governor’s statements came as six student protesters were placed on mandatory temporary leaves of absence, according to Penn.

The students spoke with Action News right after they found out and said at least one of them would not be able to attend graduation. Another is an international student from the Philippines who said she’s now locked out of her dorm and that their campus IDs no longer work.

They’re calling the lockout illegal under municipal law.

“I’ve been evicted from my student housing so my Penn card no longer works to get me in the building. A few community members offered to house me in the meantime, but we’ll continue to be here,” said student protester Eliana Atienza.

“I believe that the character we demonstrate within this encampment will always be more valuable to me and more worthwhile than the risks that we face in standing up for those values,” added fellow student protester Emma Herdon.

The six who are currently restricted from campus facilities and events say they only have access to health care facilities on campus.

“This is not a permanent process but it is indicative of the harshness and cruelty of the university’s demands,” said student protester Sonya Stacia.

“These actions are a result of the University’s continuing response to the unauthorized encampment on College Green,” a statement from the university said.

Penn to have increased security for commencement

Penn has announced increased security measures for commencement later this month.

Penn officials say there will be a “high level of security” at all Franklin Field gates and on the field inside the stadium for the May 20 graduation ceremony.

All graduates and guests will also have to clear airport-style security screening. Officials warn this will slow entry into the venue and urge attendees to plan accordingly.

Gates will open at 8 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m.

Graduates will be required to show their Penn ID to access the field.

  • Person of interest in custody after woman, 1-year-old stabbed in Center City: Police

Person of interest in custody after woman, 1-year-old stabbed in Center City: Police

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A person of interest is in custody after police say a woman stabbed two people in Philadelphia on Saturday, including a 1-year-old.

The first stabbing took place at approximately 8 a.m. on the 1300 block of Chancellor Street in Center City.

Investigators say the suspect, who they believe is 29-year-old Takeira Hester, ran up to a 24-year-old woman and stabbed her in the chest before fleeing the area.

“This offender just runs up, quick stab, runs,” noted Philadelphia Police Captain Frank Banford.

The victim was transported to Jefferson University Hospital, where she was treated and later released.

The second stabbing happened just after 12:30 p.m. on the 300 block of South 18th Street outside Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel (BZBI) synagogue.

Police say the suspect ran up to two parents and their twin 1-year-old boys, who were in strollers.

“It looked like this female just rushed up to them, nothing was said, completely random, tried to stab both children but got one child in each arm,” said Banford.

The children’s father chased after the suspect, who dropped her handbag but was able to flee the scene, according to police. That handbag is now being used in the investigation.

“I heard a guy shouting, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God!’” recalled Ashley Jeong from Center City. “The baby was crying.”

The 1-year-old was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and is listed in stable condition.

Officers said in a press conference on Saturday that both attacks appear to be random.

In a statement to Action News, the synagogue also confirmed the attack near its property was not antisemitic.

Hester was previously arrested for aggravated assault and has a warrant out of New York City for aggravated assault charges that occurred days before these stabbings.

Investigators are not sure whether she has ties to the Philadelphia area.

Officers did not provide any further details on the case. A source did provide Action News with surveillance images of the person police were searching for.

As the investigation continues, residents told Action News they’re concerned over the unusual violence in the area.

“Horrible, it’s so crazy,” said Samantha Schwartz. “I used to feel comfortable walking in this area and now I don’t at any time.”

“I think it’s terribly disturbing,” added Andy Shull from Rittenhouse. “I think something needs to be done about this and what’s going on is uncalled for.”

“Something needs to be done and it’s gotta be done soon because the same thing is going to happen again,” Shull added.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the police.

Mother aims to track down shooter who killed her son, injured 2 others in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A year ago, three men were shot and one of them was killed in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood.

Now, the mother of the man who died is asking for the public’s help in finding his killer.

Ana Vasquez described her son, Jael Bravo, as a loving person.

“He was a happy young man, a lover of life, music. He was a creator and an artist,” said Vasquez.

Just before 11 p.m. on March 13, 2023, police say the 21-year-old was driving around with his cousin and friend before parking at the corner of North Marshall and Girard streets.

Police say a dark-colored SUV pulled up and someone fired into Bravo’s Honda Civic.

Arriving officers found the car with the engine running. They say the car had been hit about 15 times on the driver’s side.

“He was in the driver’s seat,” said Vasquez.

“Clearly someone was firing a semiautomatic gun very close proximity to the vehicle,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small with Philadelphia police.

All three in the car were hit. Bravo was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The other two victims were listed in stable condition. As far as cooperating with police, Vasquez says it’s unclear.

“On the part of her nephew and the friend, there’s a lot of fear of speaking,” she said.

The City of Philadelphia is offering up to $20,000 in reward money for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

All you have to do is call the Citizens Crime Commission at 215-546-TIPS. All calls will remain anonymous.

“I simply ask that if anyone has information that they come forward,” said Vasquez. “I have lost a very young, very loving son, dearly beloved by friends and family.”

8 high school students shot at bus stop in Philadelphia; police searching for multiple gunmen

PHILADELPHIA — Eight juveniles were shot at a bus stop in Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon.

The gunfire rang out around 3 p.m. in the city’s Burholme neighborhood as students with Northeast High School were waiting for the bus.

According to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, eight students — between the ages of 15 and 17 — were shot when three gunmen exited a vehicle near a Dunkin’ store and opened fire.

One of the students is listed as critical at an area hospital. There was no immediate word on the conditions of the seven other victims.

8 shot at SEPTA bus stop in Burholme; police searching for multiple gunmen in Hyundai Elantra

Bethel says over 30 shots were fired at the scene.

Sources say police are looking for three shooters and a driver in a dark blue Hyundai Elantra with paper tags. The suspects were all wearing masks and were last seen driving over a bridge toward Cheltenham Township.

One woman who works at the nearby Quaker Diner heard the gunshots and ran out to try and help the victims. She reported seeing several juveniles wounded.

“These children are dying every day out here, somebody’s got to do something. This doesn’t happen in this neighborhood,” she said.

According to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, a Route 18 bus and a Route 67 bus were struck by the gunfire near the scene.

The Action Cam was at the Frankford Transportation Center where one of the involved buses was cordoned off by police.

SEPTA says there have no reports of any injuries to passengers or employees.

Action News continues to follow this developing story.

This is the fourth shooting in less than a week involving a SEPTA bus.

On Sunday, 27-year-old Sawee Kofa was shot and killed after an argument on a SEPTA bus in the city’s Oxford Circle neighborhood.

A teen was killed and four others were hurt Monday when gunfire rang out at a bus stop in the city’s Ogontz neighborhood. And on Tuesday night, police say a man was shot and killed on a Route 79 bus Tuesday night in South Philadelphia.

Family seeks answers after Philadelphia double shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A double shooting in Philadelphia left one man dead and another in critical condition back in 2023.

Now, the family of the deceased is hoping that the public has information that can lead authorities to the killer.

Imear Morrison’s family says at the end of 2022, he was trying to turn his life around.

“He’s just talking about changes, you know, to make in the New Year coming. And um just, just as sudden you know, someone took his life,” said Morrison’s uncle, Curtis Shiver.

On February 15, 2023, police were called to the 3900 block of Folsom Street in the city’s Mantua section for reports of a person with a gun.

When police arrived, they found Morrison suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

He was taken to the hospital, where he died a short time later.

“There were three of them that were walking from the pizza store. He got shot, my son got shot. The other person got shot as well, but the third person disappeared,” said Morrison’s mother, Valerie Moore.

The second man who got shot was listed in critical condition.

Police did arrest a man in possession of a gun that turned out to be the murder weapon in Morrison’s case.

However, police did clear him of the murder.

The City of Philadelphia is offering up to $20,000 in reward money for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

All you have to do is call the Citizens Crime Commission at 215-546-TIPS. All calls will remain anonymous.

“In my neighborhood, that’s a lot of money, so if it’s out there that there is a reward, somebody should talk,” said Moore.

  • Police investigate shots fired after large crowd gathers near Temple University

Police investigate shots fired after large crowd gathers near Temple University

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia Police have released images of a suspect they believe fired a gun near a crowd of hundreds of juveniles near Temple University’s campus Saturday evening.

The university’s Office of Public Safety says it was aware of a “meet up” advertised on social media near Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue Saturday and officers were in place to monitor the crowd.

Still, video from the Citizen’s App show chaos ensuing. Around 4:30 p.m., up to 500 juveniles had gathered near the Liacouras Center. They could be seen running onto the street and weaving through traffic. Police say the crowd did not disperse until around 6 p.m., when shots were fired.

Police put out pictures of the individual they believe is responsible and are hoping someone recognizes him.

“We took the subway, we were in town and the only reason we knew about it was social media, but if we didn’t, we would’ve just took the subway to get here and we would’ve just, it could’ve been a lot worse,” said Jared, a junior at Temple, who says he avoided Broad Street after seeing videos of the crowd.

Police say no one was hurt when the shots were fired, but the violence still rattled students.

“We know what happens in this area and stuff and with more police patrols, it could cut down, but you don’t see them at all unless something actually happens,” said Dmar, a sophomore.

Police say the scene on Broad Street was clear by 8:30 p.m., but half a mile away, on 19th and Diamond streets, a separate violent incident broke out.

Philadelphia Police say there was a triple shooting during a party at an Airbnb around 1:20 a.m. Sunday. Police say a 15-year-old girl was grazed in the head, an 18-year-old male was shot in the arm, and a 17-year-old male was shot in the arm and head. The 17-year-old is in critical condition.

“Everybody just left at one time, there was a bus right here, people hopped on the bus, the bus was crowded after that,” said Ashiya Hopewell from North Philadelphia.

Temple says no students were involved in either incident.

Jennifer Griffin, the Vice President & Chief for Public Safety said of the mob on Broad Street “Keeping the community safe, informed and connected is our number 1 priority, and one we take very seriously.” Adding, “This behavior is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.”

“When you’ve lived here long enough you kind of disassociate from the idea you might get shot or whatever slightly more scared about,” said Khushi Kumar, a senior.

No arrests have been made in either incident at this point.

  • Social media video shows confrontation before deadly police-involved shooting in Philadelphia

Social media video shows confrontation before deadly police-involved shooting in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — We are learning new details about the deadly officer-involved shooting in North Philadelphia on Friday night that left a man dead and an officer injured.

This, as the search continues for a man who police say stole a gun from the scene of the shooting where 28-year-old Alexander Spencer was shot and killed by police.

There is also new video that has surfaced from the night of the shooting, which is being used in the investigation.

The officer who was shot was released Monday afternoon from Temple University Hospital. His name has not yet been made public.

The officer who was shot was released Monday afternoon from Temple University Hospital.

Now, those who were on the scene are questioning why police initially went into the grocery store.

Action News is showing the beginning of a social media video from a witness who started recording after police were already in a struggle with Spencer on the ground. It has also been blurred.

“Yo, what y’all doing, bruh? What y’all doing?” the witness recording the video can be heard saying.

Police say they are aware of this 30-second clip and that it’s part of the investigation.

The incident happened Friday night inside Jennifer Tavern on the corner of N. Mascher and W. Cambria streets in North Philadelphia.

Police say two officers entered the store and tried to stop Spencer before they got into a scuffle.

Spencer is then on the ground with one officer.

Officers say that’s when Spencer allegedly shot one officer in the leg and the officer’s partner returned fire, killing Spencer.

However, by watching the video, it’s unclear who fired shots first.

You can then hear the bystander who was recording questioning police and then an officer calls for help.

“I need someone right now. My partner is shot,” one of the officers is heard saying to his radio.

Investigators have not said why they tried to stop Spencer or what led to it.

During the incident, police say 42-year-old Jose Quinones-Mendez fled the scene with Spencer’s gun. However, that part isn’t seen on the video clip shot by the witness.

Right now, police are searching for Quinones-Mendez, who is facing several charges, including obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence. He is considered armed and dangerous, according to police.

The Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #5 is offering a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to Quinones-Mendez’s arrest.

“Our reward is payable immediately, if the tip information leads to the whereabouts of this individual,” said, FOP Lodge #5 President, Roosevelt Poplar.

Quinones-Mendez is described as being 5’8″ tall and approximately 160 lbs. His last known address was on the 2900 block of North Hancock Street.

Spencer’s friends have since created a memorial in his honor outside of the store where they say he often went to play the slot machines.

“I just feel like I just want to know what really happened. What did he do? Y’all could’ve just arrested him. Y’all could’ve just done way better,” said one of Spencer’s friends who did not want to be identified.

The names of the two officers have not been released. The wounded officer has been on the force for nine years and the officer who fired has been on the force for five years.

    The investigation is still ongoing.

Anyone with information on Quinones-Mendez’s whereabouts is being asked to call the Philadelphia police homicide unit at 215-686-3334 or 9-1-1.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A mother and aunt came together to make a plea for justice after the death of their loved one in Philadelphia last year.

Sara Shands is protective of her sister, Terri Davis-Smith, who had a rough 2023 after losing her son.

“It’s hard because no mother should have to bury their child. My sister was diagnosed with cancer in January and then in April her son was murdered,” said Shands.

At 11:25 p.m. on April 21, 27-year-old George Smith was shot and killed along the 2400 block of North 17th Street in North Philadelphia.

Police described the scene to the family based on cameras in the area. They’ve also said there are three suspects, the driver of a car and two others.

“They crept up on him while his back was actually turned. They crept up on him as the cowards that they were and proceeded to jump out of the car and target him and shoot numerous times, numerous times,” said Shands.

“I just want justice for my son. I want everyone that was involved that’s taken him from me, his father, his son to be appointed justice,” said Davis-Smith.

The City of Philadelphia is offering up to $20,000 in reward money for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

All you have to do is call the Citizens Crime Commission at 215-546-TIPS. All calls will remain anonymous.

“We don’t know what the reasoning was, we just know that some cruel individuals took his life on April 21,” said Shands.

Arrest made in brutal beating, robbery in South Philadelphia

The suspect is seen on video repeatedly punching one victim and knocking the second unconscious.

    Friday, December 2, 2022 10:30PM

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A man has been arrested for the brutal assault and robbery of two people at a market in South Philadelphia last month.

Police say Lance Ryan was taken into custody by the FBI in Baltimore, Maryland on Friday morning.

He will return to Philadelphia to face charges for the incident, Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore tweeted.
