The wait is finally over, as the NFL regular season kicks off on Thursday night in Philadelphia, as the defending champion Eagles look to start their title defense on a high note as they take on their division rival, the Dallas Cowboys.
The Eagles enter the year as one of the favorites in the NFC to return to the Super Bowl. All of their key players are returning, and they should once again be one of the best teams in the NFL on both sides of the ball. Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley will look to once again create one of the most dynamic rushing attacks in league history.
A lot is up in the air in Dallas after they shockingly traded Micah Parsons to the Packers last week. Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb will have to return to their All-Pro 2023 form for the Cowboys to be true contenders this season after the departure of their best defensive player. Last year, Prescott only played 8 games, and Lamb was banged up throughout the year as well, but just two seasons ago, they were the most dynamic passing duo in all of football.
This is a great NFL matchup that you will not want to miss; make sure to tune in and catch all the action.
This game will be nationally broadcast on NBC, which can be live-streamed with a free trial subscription to FuboTV.
You can catch the NFL all season long with Fubo on NBC, CBS, FOX, ESPN, NFL Network, and more. They also carry NFL RedZone, which bounces around from game to game, ensuring that you catch all of the big plays and touchdowns.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The Eagles Thursday night season opener against Dallas is already breaking records, as ticket demand surges ahead of the game.
“This is the hottest ticket this NFL season,” said Kyle Zorn, of TickPick.com. “It’s the most expensive Eagles game on record for a regular season game.”
Zorn says the get in price for standing room tickets is around $280. The average fan is spending about $774. When it comes to who’s buying the tickets, about 8% of sales are in Texas, the rest are in the tri-state area.
Some fans outside the Linc on Wednesday said the price was a steal.
“I would pay a thousand dollars just to see a Cowboys fan cry. Let alone get in the stadium,” said Mike Nappi, who was making videos in the parking of the Linc.
Philadelphia Eagles legend Brian Westbrook heard head coach Nick Sirianni say the team wouldn’t be watching their Super Bowl LIX banner rise at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday night.
Westbrook couldn’t love that mentality more.
While the entire city of Philadelphia will be ecstatic to see the franchise’s second Super Bowl banner of all time rise on Thursday night during the NFL’s 2025 season kickoff against the Dallas Cowboys, this year’s Eagles team is focused on winning another Vince Lombardi Trophy at the end of the new season.

Westbrook spoke to Fox News Digital after working with USAA as part of its Recycled Rides NFL Kickoff on Wednesday, gifting a new car to a deserving military service member, where he discussed the Eagles’ mentality heading into 2025.
“The one thing I love about this team this offseason was their approach,” he explained. “This offseason wasn’t about them doing a victory lap around Philadelphia and the United States saying they’re the best team in football, they beat the reigning champs, and they did this, that and the other. It wasn’t about that. It was about refocusing. It was about saying, ‘Yeah, we won last year, but we have something else we want to prove, and one is not enough. Now, we have to go out there and earn it again.’
“That’s what this offseason was about for this football team.”
Westbrook added that, in those conversations with Eagles players, he’s only heard about offseason workouts and looking ahead to 2025 instead of reminiscing about the Super Bowl.
A big part of that, in Westbrook’s eyes, has been the leadership of Jalen Hurts, the team’s franchise quarterback.

“Chip on his shoulder,” Westbrook said of Hurts, who enters his sixth year in an Eagles uniform. “People are still doubting him. Super Bowl MVP and people are still doubting him. So, Jalen walks around with a little chip on his shoulder, and I appreciate that because I played with that as well. His ability to lead this team is going to say a lot, and I think he’s an awesome leader.”
Of course, you can’t talk about the 2024 Eagles without mentioning their biggest free agent pickup, running back Saquon Barkley, who went on to lead the NFL in rushing yards and scrimmage yards in his debut season in Philadelphia.
Westbrook, having played Barkley’s position while a member of the Eagles, knows how important he is to the team’s success now and in the future. But his favorite thing about Barkley is his selfless nature, where winning no matter his role takes precedent.
“Saquon is one of the best teammates you can possibly have,” Westbrook said. “He understands and believes that, ‘If we need to throw the ball 50 times a game, I’m willing to block 50 times. If we need to run the ball, I’ll run the ball 50 times.’ So, he’s selfless in that way. He wants to win games.”

The Chiefs would’ve cemented their place as an NFL dynasty if they came out victorious in New Orleans earlier this year. After all, no team in league history has ever won three straight Super Bowls.
But looking at this Eagles team, and how GM Howie Roseman has crafted this bunch to has a large championship window in the coming years, perhaps this is the squad where the word “dynasty” comes back around.
“I don’t think you can throw the word dynasty around quite yet,” Westbrook replied when asked that very question. “I think you have to win a couple more in a row to do that. I mean, [2017] was huge, but coming back last year was huge as well. Before you can have a dynasty, you need to win a few of them. But talent wise, they have the ability to do that. They have the ability to go back-to-back and have the ability to win an awful lot of games this year. As a fan, I hate to throw dynasty around until it actually happens.
“So, I won’t use it, but I can certainly see why people say this team has the potential to be a dynasty.”

Westbrook was right outside where the Eagles will be playing on Thursday night, as he helped USAA, the official “Salute to Service” partner of the NFL, gift a vehicle to Airman First Class Keskel Yatrofsky, who is currently serving in the United States Air Force in the 2nd Air Refueling Squadron based out of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurt.
Yatrofsky received a 2023 Toyota Camry completely repaired and donated by the National Auto Body Council Recycled Ride, which focuses providing reliable transportation to those in need.
“Moments like this go down as some of the most special times in my life,” he said. “I think about my kids and what we’re teaching them about gratitude, giving back, about doing things for others that make their day.
“Today, watching Keskel and his face of excitement about receiving a car that means so much.”

The NFL is back at long last, and we are going to be treated to 16 games over four days to start the season.
Here are five things to know heading into Week One. (And get to the end of the article for a fantasy tip that could help you win Week One!)
Super Bowl champs open the season vs. Cowboys and Friday night football
The Philadelphia Eagles are set to begin their title defense Thursday night when they host their NFC East rival, the Dallas Cowboys.
The Philly faithful will still have plenty to cheer about as they are bringing back pretty much all of the core from their championship team. And some extra good news for the Eagles: the so-called “tush push” was not banned, and they can continue to dominate short-yardage scenarios with Jalen Hurts and their powerful offensive line.
Hurts is extra happy for this matchup after the Cowboys shocked the NFL world by trading All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons last week to the Packers for two first-round picks and Kenny Clark. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said part of the reason they made the trade was to stop the run. Let’s see how they do against Saquon Barkley on opening night.
The second game of the NFL season will be just one night later, as the league returns to São Paulo, Brazil, for a second straight season. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will take on the Los Angeles Chargers.
In last year’s Brazil game at Arena Corinthians, the field was very slick and drew much criticism from the Eagles and Packers. The NFL says it is aware of the problem and will make sure it does not happen this time.
The Buffalo Bills are Super Bowl favorites
Neither Hurts and the Eagles, nor Mahomes and the Chiefs, are the favorites to win the Super Bowl this season. Oddsmakers have Josh Allen and the Bills as the most likely to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
At some point the Bills’ luck has to change, right?
They are one of 12 NFL teams to have never won the Super Bowl, along with the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans.
They just better hope they don’t run into the Chiefs. Allen is 0-4 against Mahomes in the playoffs. The Bills have a monster opener Sunday night at home against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
Aaron Rodgers revenge game
Right out of the gate we get Aaron Rodgers, who is now the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, going up against his former team, the New York Jets. New York fans will likely not be giving Rodgers a warm welcome when he gets under center at MetLife Stadium. In his two seasons in New York the Jets went just 6-12 in games he played – and he spent much of the time injured.
Rodgers turns 42 in December. Here is the list of quarterbacks who have started 10 or more games in their age-42 season: Tom Brady.
That’s it.
Rodgers will need to stay healthy and find the fountain of youth if the Steelers are to realize their Super Bowl dreams.
The 49ers are fire and ice
History has told us one thing about the 49ers: They are either going to be really good or really bad. This is an amazing stat: Over the last 22 years, the Niners have either made at least the NFC Championship Game or not made the playoffs at all. They don’t mess around with any first- or second-round exits.
This season they are coming off a very disappointing 6-11 record. But the good news is that finish was good for last place in the NFC West, which means they get to play a last-place schedule this season. Expect a big bounce-back year from Brock Purdy and company, as they officially have the easiest schedule in the NFL.
They open at Seattle on Sunday.
Bengals yearn for hot start
No team needs to get off to a fast start more than the Cincinnati Bengals. Over the last three seasons they’ve started 0-2, and last season they started 0-3. For this reason, coach Zac Taylor had his starters playing more than usual during the preseason to get them ready for Week One against the Browns.
Joe Burrow and company have missed the playoffs the past two seasons. They will look to end the drought behind their high-powered offense.
Fantasy tip: Start Jerome Ford
Speaking of the Bengals … while their offense is good, their defense is expected to be one of the worst in the NFL. Browns running back Jerome Ford is rostered in about 70% of ESPN leagues. If he’s available, or if you already have him, start him against the Bengals.

After a strong season last year, the Philadelphia Eagles remain among the top contenders in 2025.
As the new season is before us, sportsbooks are already showing the first odds that would let fans place their bets.
While you’re analyzing and placing bets, fans can also have more fun playing casino games with a sports theme. You can even find NFL-themed games among the best-paying pokies that are available at https://onlinepokiesmates.com/best-paying-pokies/, which are a popular way of spinning the reels if you’re a football fan.
Some of these games feature the Super Bowl theme because it’s the biggest sports event in the US.
If you’re considering betting on the Philadelphia Eagles, here are the odds that are currently available.
Keep in mind that the odds are subject to change, the same way past Super Bowl point spreads changed over time, especially when the competition progresses and teams’ performances become obvious.
First Games in September
PHOTO: Casey Murphy/Unsplash
The first week of the league is placing the Eagles as favorites in both of their matches. The first one is against the Dallas Cowboys, and the second one is against the Kansas City Chiefs. The spread odds are -120 and -122, respectively. For the moneyline, the Eagles are stronger favorites with odds being -310 and -110 for the first and the second game.
Overs and unders are a bit different. The odds against the Dallas Cowboys for under 46.5 are -115, whereas the game with the Kansas City Chiefs offers -105 for over 46.5.
This is the first sign that the whole team is still perceived as being strong and ready to go far in the competition. This is somewhat normal due to the success of the team last time.
Super Bowl Odds
This year, the Eagles are considered the favorites. Here’s how the odds compare to the past Super Bowl scores and spreads.
Eagles currently share +750 odds to win the Super Bowl, placing them among the top 4 contenders alongside the Chiefs and 49ers. There are a couple of other teams with the same odds, but the majority of the others have lower odds of winning.
Playoffs Odds
When it comes to the playoffs, the odds are again saying that the Philadelphia Eagles will reach them. Odds of them making it to the playoffs are -350. On the contrary, the odds of them not reaching the playoffs are +265. That’s not so surprising, given how well the team played last season.
Win Totals Odds
Win Toals is the type of bet that you place on how many games the team will win over the regular season. Players can bet on to win 6, 8, or 10. If you want to bet on six, that’s impossible because there are no odds for this number of games. However, to win 8, the odds are -800, and to win 10, the odds are -250.
These odds imply that the team will most likely achieve more than 10 wins in the regular season.
Futures Specials
In the futures section, there’s just one unique bet that includes the Eagles, but it’s not exclusive to them. The bet means that the Eagles, Ravens, and Chiefs need to make it to the playoffs.
Eagles, Chiefs, and Ravens each have a chance to make it to the playoffs. As these teams are likely to achieve that, the odds are -110.
Division Winners
Placing a bet on the NFC East Winners and the NFC Championship winner this early relies on a lot of luck. Still, that is reflected in somewhat appealing odds. The Eagles are considered favorites to win the NFC East with odds of -130. They are also the favorites to win the NFC Championship, with the odds being +370.

Awards
These are not the best for the whole team, but for the individuals on the team. The highlights include Saquon Barkley, who you can bet on as the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year with the odds of +600. He is the favorite with these odds that place him at the top.
Lane Johnson is considered among the best protectors in the league, which is reflected in the odds of +650, which are putting him as a favorite NFL protector of the year 2025/2026.
Even though not a favorite, Vic Fangio is the fourth candidate to be the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year, with the odds of +1000. So, plenty of nominations from the Eagles team.
Team Specials
This is where things get fun, as there are team specials odds that also show the strength of the Philadelphia Eagles. Here’s a list featuring the top specials:
Eagles to score at least one touchdown in every regular season game, with the odds of -160.
Eagles to beat the Dallas Cowboys at home and away in the regular season, with the odds of -125.
Eagles to beat the Washington Commanders at home and away in the regular season, with the odds of +110.
Saquon Barkley is expected to get 500+ regular-season receiving yards, with the odds of +160.
Saquon Barkley & Jalen Hurts to combine 2500+ rushing yards in the regular season, with the odds of +250.
Jalen Carter is expected to achieve 10+ sacks in the regular season, with the odds of +300.
First Odds Are Promising
According to the first and betting lines that have appeared, the Philadelphia Eagles are still considered a team that could repeat the success they had last year.
While being different from the past Super Bowl spreads, they still show who is considered to be the favorite.
Amidst all the chaos of a blockbuster trade happening in the division. The Eagles have been loading the practice squad and depth chart back up with some familiar faces from the last few seasons. While we’ve already seen Patrick Johnson make his return in the preseason. The Eagles didn’t stop there.
Adding To The Practice Squad
After the initial rush of Waiver Claims saw 27 players get picked up across the league.
Once the hype of the day was over the Eagles made a few extra additions to the team.
Britain Covey
After missing most of last season due to injury, the Eagles tried moving on from Covey in the offseason. Even attempting to find a solution in Avery Williams at the start of free agency.
Once Williams was released for roster cuts the question became, who would be taking returns? Fangio stated last season he didn’t want DeJean permanently on the return team and the Eagles needed a solution.
Now the Eagles will have Covey back on the practice squad and be able to promote him to the game day roster three times. In 2023 Covey played in 16 games with 29 Punt Returns for 417 yards and a longest return of 54 yards.
For now, there is a solution on the return team.
Marcus Epps
Just in case the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade wasn’t confusing already. The Eagles brought back another familiar face to the practice squad. With 94 total tackles, 4 TFL and 1 Forced fumble on the Super Bowl 57 team. Epps moved on with many of the Free Agents after the 2022 season, where he landed with the Raiders.
Missing the majority of the 2024 season from a torn ACL. With his 2 year deal expiring, the Eagles brought back Epps and waived Tristan McCollum (who was picked up by the Raiders).
Epps will rejoin his former team, as well as former Raiders teammate Jakorian Bennett.
For now, the Safety position group consists of
Reed Blankenship
Andrew Mukuba
Sydney Brown
Marcus Epps (PS)
Andre Sam (PS)
One More August Trade
The day before 53-man rosters were due, the Eagles brought back one more familiar face from the Super Bowl 59 roster. This time via a trade.
Another Eagles trade: Jaguars are sending OT Fred Johnson back to Philadelphia in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick, per sources. Johnson now returns to the team he played for from 2022-‘24. pic.twitter.com/e5jEXujanz
Bringing back Fred Johnson gives the Eagles an extra body along the offensive line who’s already familiar with Stoutland and the Eagles offense.
With 6 games started in the 2024 season Fred will be able to fill in for multiple positions across the OL. Including right guard, tackle and left tackle.
Now with extra versatility along the offensive line. Will the Eagles finally be finished making moves before their September 4th season opener?
Or is there one more trick up Howie Roseman’s sleeve?

Traditionally, the fullback played as a blocker, clearing the way for running backs or quarterbacks. The athletes who played the position tended to be large, physical, intimidating players, and while they would also be used to collect some passes, their primary role in the team was to block.
More recently, the position has fallen out of favor.
Only a single fullback was even picked in this year’s draft, although some teams are starting to transition existing players into quasi-fullbacks – running backs who can also block.
The Eagles
Having won last year’s Super Bowl, the Eagles are once again among the favourites to lift the trophy this year, having been given odds of +700 to do so. The event remains one of the most significant betting events of the calendar and is not only popular in the US but overseas, with bettors using secure offshore wagering accounts to find the best odds and bet on their NFL favourites.
According to sports betting expert Steven Brown, the NFL, in general, is one of the most popular sports for betting in the US.
The Eagles will prove popular once again this year, and one of the reasons some neutrals will be rooting for them is because they are effectively reintegrating the fullback position – a position that has become somewhat nostalgic.
1) Keith Byars
Byars was the tenth overall pick in the 1986 NFL Draft, when he was picked up by the Eagles. He had enjoyed an excellent college career, although his senior year was blighted by a foot injury, which reoccurred when Byars tried rushing back before the injury had fully healed. He was a multifunctional player, slotting in as running back and right end as well as fullback, and he was known for excellent running, efficient pass catching, and, critically for the fullback role, his blocking skills. He is considered by many to be the best fullback the Eagles have ever had.
Byars remained with the Eagles until 1993, when he joined the Miami Dolphins. He would also go on to play for the New England Patriots and the New York Jets and was widely regarded at all the clubs he played for. He retired from playing in 1998, losing his final game with the New York Jets, when they were beaten by the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.
2) Kevin Turner
PHOTO: Dave Adamson/Unsplash
Two years after Byars left the Eagles, Kevin Turner took his place in the fullback role. Turner had excelled as a blocker with the Alabama Crimson Tide college team, and, as a result, he was picked in the third round of the 1992 draft by the New England Patriots. He played three seasons for New England before he moved to the Eagles and played five seasons. Turner finished his career in 1999 after suffering two neck injuries.
He won the Ed Block Courage Award for having played through previous injuries. Following his retirement, Turner led a lawsuit against the NFL regarding concussions in the sport. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2016 – his passing was later attributed to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, caused by repeated head injuries.
3) Jon Ritchie
Jon Ritchie was widely considered one of the best high school fullbacks in the country. Despite being courted by Penn State, he opted to play college football for Michigan. After transferring to Stanford, he was initially deployed as a linebacker but eventually transitioned back to fullback.
In 1998, he was picked by the Oakland Raiders in the third round of the draft and spent five seasons there before joining the Eagles in 2003. After two years playing fullback for Philadelphia, Ritchie retired from playing and took up a role commentating in Philly.
4) Leonard Weaver
Leonard Tony Weaver III had a relatively short career and only saw a single season with the Eagles, but that one season was a glowing one. Having played a linebacker and H-back for Carson-Newman College, Weaver signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2005. Here, he converted to the fullback position and signed a one-year extension in 2008.
After the 2008 season, he left the Seahawks and joined the Eagles as an unrestricted free agent. He was widely considered the best fullback in the league by the end of the 2009 season, but was injured in his first carry of the 2010 season, ultimately being forced to retire in 2011.
5) Ben VanSumeren
Although the fullback position has largely fallen out of favor, one player who wants to see it resurrected is Ben VanSumeren. VanSumeren was recruited to play fullback for Michigan at college, but soon converted to the running back position and then linebacker. He was picked up by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2023.
“It’s something I did growing up, and it is something I did in college as well, and so there has never been a time when I felt I had to knock the rust off.”
From tailgating traditions to the roar of fans inside iconic stadiums, the energy, passion, and loyalty of Philadelphia sports fans are unmatched.
The city’s sports culture spans generations, blending historic rivalries, community spirit, and unique fan rituals that make every game day an unforgettable experience.
In this post, we’ll explore the essence of Philadelphia sports culture, highlighting the elements that make it one of the most vibrant fan experiences in the country.
From Pre-Game Gatherings To Stadium For Philadelphia Sports
Tailgating Traditions
Tailgating in Philadelphia is more than a pre-game ritual—it’s a full-fledged cultural experience. Fans arrive hours ahead of kickoff or first pitch, bringing grills, food, music, and team decorations. Tailgates serve as social hubs where fans swap stories, celebrate their team’s history, and enjoy the communal atmosphere.
Food plays a significant role, from Philly cheesesteaks to local favorites, creating an authentic taste of the city. These gatherings are lively, welcoming, and inclusive, often attracting families, longtime supporters, and newcomers alike. Tailgating is where the city’s sports passion comes alive, showing how deeply games are intertwined with Philadelphia’s social and cultural life.

Pre-Game Rituals and Superstitions
Many Philadelphia fans bring their own unique touch to game day with personal rituals and superstitions. From wearing lucky jerseys to following specific routines, these practices add a personal layer to the city’s sports culture. Fans often share stories of rituals passed down through generations, creating a sense of continuity and tradition.
While these rituals vary widely, they all serve one purpose: enhancing the excitement and personal connection to the game. Whether it’s a family tradition, a pre-game chant, or a favorite tailgating spot, these rituals contribute to the city’s reputation for dedicated, passionate, and enthusiastic fans.
Passionate Fan Chants and Cheers
Philadelphia fans are legendary for their energy inside stadiums and arenas. Chants, cheers, and coordinated applause are more than noise—they are expressions of city pride and loyalty. Whether supporting the Eagles, 76ers, Flyers, or Phillies, fans create an atmosphere that energizes teams and intimidates opponents.
Signature chants and team songs echo through stadiums, uniting fans in a shared celebration of their city and teams. This level of enthusiasm helps define Philadelphia sports culture, where every cheer carries history, meaning, and community spirit, making attending a game an unforgettable experience.
Rivalries That Define the City
Rivalries are the lifeblood of Philadelphia sports, fueling fan passion and excitement. Historic matchups, such as Eagles vs. Cowboys or 76ers vs. Celtics, bring out the best—and sometimes the most intense—of fan energy. Rivalries in Philadelphia aren’t just about wins and losses; they’re about pride, tradition, and the collective identity of the city.
Fans take these games seriously, engaging in friendly debates, pre-game discussions, and community traditions that heighten the stakes. These rivalries define Philadelphia’s sports culture, giving fans a sense of belonging while connecting generations of supporters to the city’s competitive spirit.
Game Day Apparel and Colors
Wearing team apparel is a visible and celebrated part of Philadelphia sports culture. From jerseys and hats to scarves and painted faces, fans proudly display team colors and logos throughout the city. Game day fashion is more than style—it’s a statement of loyalty, community, and pride.
Local businesses, tailgating spots, and even casual meetups reflect this passion, showing how integrated sports are into everyday life. The sea of green, blue, or red in stadiums and city streets demonstrates how deeply teams are embedded in the identity of Philadelphia, reinforcing a shared sense of culture among fans.
Historic Stadium Experiences
Philadelphia’s sports venues are more than just places to watch a game—they are landmarks of history, culture, and shared experiences. Lincoln Financial Field, Wells Fargo Center, and Citizens Bank Park host memorable moments that fans recall for years.
Visiting these stadiums provides a glimpse into the city’s sports heritage, with every corner telling a story of legendary plays, historic matches, and passionate crowds. The design, traditions, and atmosphere of each venue add layers to the fan experience, making attending a Philadelphia game both an emotional and cultural event, connecting fans to decades of sports history.
Fan Loyalty Through the Years
Philadelphia fans are known for their unwavering loyalty. Win or lose, generations of supporters remain steadfast, creating a culture of resilience and pride. Longtime fans pass traditions to younger generations, ensuring that team spirit and city pride continue.
This loyalty extends beyond the stadium, shaping local culture, media coverage, and community events. Fans’ dedication is evident in attendance, celebrations, and social media engagement, illustrating how deeply sports are woven into daily life. This long-term commitment helps define Philadelphia as one of the most devoted sports cities in America.
Community Spirit and Local Hangouts
Philadelphia sports culture thrives in the city’s neighborhoods, bars, and local gathering spots. Sports bars, pubs, and community centers become hubs for fans to meet, watch games, and celebrate together. Many of these venues offer refreshing options like non alcoholic cocktails in a can, allowing fans to enjoy flavorful drinks while staying entirely engaged in the game day excitement.
These hangouts strengthen social bonds, allowing fans to share stories, memories, and experiences. Community events, viewing parties, and local traditions all contribute to the sense of belonging and connection that defines the city’s sports culture. In Philadelphia, sports aren’t just about competition—they’re about community, relationships, and shared identity.

The city’s dedication to its teams, traditions, and fan experiences makes Philadelphia a true sports capital, where every game is a celebration of heritage, identity, and shared excitement.
Carson Wentz is back in the NFL and Sam Howell is on the move again.
The Minnesota Vikings have signed Wentz to back up quarterback J.J. McCarthy and traded Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles.
The reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles are sending a 2026 fifth-round pick and 2027 seventh-rounder to Minnesota for Howell and a 2027 sixth-rounder.
Wentz, who spent last season backing up Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, was the No. 2 overall pick by the Eagles in 2016. He finished third in NFL MVP voting the following season but tore his ACL in December and watched Nick Foles lead Philadelphia to its first Super Bowl victory.
Wentz started for Indianapolis in 2021 and Washington in 2022. He was a backup with the Los Angeles Rams in 2023.
McCarthy was selected 10th overall in the 2024 draft but sat out his rookie season with a knee injury while Sam Darnold led the Vikings to a 14-3 record.
The 32-year-old Wentz is 47-46-1 as a starter. He has completed 62.7% of his passes for 22,410 yards, 153 touchdowns and 67 interceptions with an 89.3 passer rating.
Wentz is the only quarterback in NFL history to throw for 4,000 yards in a season without any wide receiver on his team reaching 500 yards receiving. He did that in 2019, leading the Eagles to an NFC East title.
Howell replaced Wentz as the starting QB for the Commanders in 2023. He played behind Geno Smith in Seattle last year before going to Minnesota. Howell joins Tanner McKee behind Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. The Eagles also currently have Dorian Thompson-Robinson and rookie Kyle McCord.
Howell, a fifth-round pick in 2022, is 5-13 as a starter. He has completed 62.6 of his passes for 4,139 yards, 22 TDs and 23 interceptions with a 77.5 passer rating.
In their past three seasons, the Philadelphia Eagles have accumulated a 39–12 regular-season record and appeared in two Super Bowls. After narrowly falling by their hands in 2022, the Birds humiliated Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs en route to their second Lombardi Trophy win last winter.
These accomplishments alone have the Eagles on the brink of a dynasty—another title would surely put them there. Given the team’s assortment of game-breaking talent, they might be in luck.
Eagles’ Returning Game-Breakers
General manager Howie Roseman has done such an excellent job adding talent to the Eagles that it’s hard to put into words. He built what many called a “superteam” in 2022, but only improved the roster over the next couple of seasons.
But let’s stick with the players who oversaw both Super Bowls. Starting with Jalen Hurts, he’s one of the premier dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL—immense rushing upside and one of the most efficient passers in the sport. He’s not necessarily the most gifted, but he gets high-end results. When the Eagles have needed him to perform the most, that’s often when he has shone the brightest.
Then, you have the offensive line. Landon Dickerson deserves a shootout here, but tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson are definitely in that “game-breaking” tier. Recognized as two of the best exterior linemen in the sport, they make the offense’s life easier by consistently and emphatically winning their assignments.
Next, wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith have been one of the league’s top one-two punches for a few years now. Coming up clutch in late-down situations and with huge contested-catch upside, they’ve flipped games on their head. Both have fourth-down snags to their name in the NFC Championship, leading to a momentum-altering touchdown a short while later.
Eagles’ “New” Game-Breakers
Over the past couple of seasons, the Eagles have added three game-breaking talents: Saquon Barkley, Zack Baun, and Jalen Carter. Their two recently drafted cornerbacks may get there (if they haven’t arrived already), but those are the big three who the Birds would’ve had no chance in 2024 without.
PHOTO: Eagles Nation on X
Barkley’s impact is self-explanatory. Setting the NFL record for rushing yards in a single season (2,504), he rushed about 1,000 yards over what would have been considered a huge win for the Birds. Winning games early in the season virtually by himself, and taking long-distance runs to the house in the playoffs, the MVP love he got was deserved.
Baun was a Defensive Player of the Year candidate last season. He was the nucleus of that core, preventing big rushes and forcing turnovers at the most pivotal moments. For a team that often struggled in both of those areas before his arrival, he changed the game for the Birds.
Finally, we have Carter. Already one of the most feared defensive linemen in the league, the 24-year-old should have about a decade of game-breaking football. His most influential play came on a third-down sack of Matthew Stafford in the NFC Divisional Round in January. With the Los Angeles Rams on the verge of a last-second go-ahead touchdown, the youngster saved the day and the Eagles’ season.
The Eagles have something special here. With eight game-breaking talents on the roster (if not more), their excellence can be felt every week. It’s why Philadelphia’s hopes of yet another Super Bowl title are quite realistic.
13 Days after acquiring Jakorian Bennett from the Raiders, and 5 days after wondering if the Eagles had finished their off-season shopping. They struck again with another trade.
This time, the Eagles finished off the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade by re-acquiring the pick they previously swapped.
Recent NFL WR trade hauls:
–Skyy Moore (2022 2nd-rnd pick) from KC to SF for 2026/2027 6th/7th pick swap –John Metchie (2022 2nd-rnd pick) + 2026 6th from PHI to HOU for Harrison Bryant, 2026 5th –Devaughn Vele (2024 7th-rnd pick) from DEN to NO for 2026 4th, 2027 6th
Moving on from Harrison Bryant was one of multiple moves teams made this week by trading roster bubble players before the 53 man deadline on the 26th.
If Metchie was on the Texans bubble and at risk of being waived. The Eagles have the 32nd priority on the waiver wire, and would lose out players they’re after. Instead, teams are swapping late round picks to grab players they otherwise might not stand a chance acquiring next week.
Ahead Of Unforeseen Circumstances
The Eagles made a trade for a receiver that had many asking questions.
Is A.J. Browns injury worse than perceived?
Do the Eagles have bigger plans coming?
What did this mean for Johnny Wilson, Ainias Smith or Darius Cooper?
Well, one of the receivers in question had their year ended when news broke that Johnny Wilson will be missing the 2025 season due to injury. Making the decision on how many receivers will make the 53 man roster a little easier.
Now the Eagles can carry 6 receivers without leaving a preseason sensation on waivers or to the practice squad.
A.J. Brown
DeVonta Smith
Jahan Dotson
John Metchie III
Ainias Smith
Darius Cooper
Are They Done Yet?
There’s still 5 days until the deadline. And even that hasn’t stopped Howie Roseman & Co. Before. With multiple trades coming right after roster cut downs leaves the Eagles with plenty of last minute options.
And for a team that still has 13 picks in the 2026 draft. They have more than enough capital to round out the perfect roster on their road to Super Bowl 60.

The Eagles have returned to the training camp, after the 2024 Super Bowl win, with one goal in mind: to prove that they are ready to repeat their success and that it was no accident.
A training camp is a proving ground for both rookie and veteran players, and experts have their eyes set on it.
Some of the best crypto sports betting sites have already come up with the odds for the Eagles to keep their title.
The opinions are mixed, but everyone agrees that it’s going to be an uphill battle. Betting sites such as these allow players to make wagers in crypto and, therefore, place them regardless of where they are based. Crypto payments are instant and safe.
Standout Players
Here’s a list of players who have already managed to stand out during the training camp and in the previous season, laying the groundwork for the team in the upcoming season.
Saquon Barkley’s Red-Zone Dominance
One of the biggest storylines so far was about how Saquon Barkley has been used in the training camp. He’s a veteran running back, and he has played a key role in the red-zone drills. In that time, he managed to run the end zone multiple times and to show a vision on the field that made him stand out.
Tyler Steen Solidifying Right Guard
Tyler Steen has emerged as the top player for the spot of right guard. The offensive line is in need of a boost, and this is one of the players who can provide it.
This is accomplished through footwork, strength, and consistency when it comes to pass protection.
Moro Ojomo’s Rise at Defensive Tackle
On the defensive side of things, second-year tackle Moro Ojomo definitely made a name for himself, at least among the experts following the training camp for the Eagles. His quick first step and the ability to disrupt plays are the basics of a good defense strategy. The team needs more depth in the defensive line, and Moro Ojomo could be a part of it.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson Winning QB3 Battle
There’s a quiet battle going on for the QB3 spot between Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR) and rookie Kyle McCord.
At this point, DTR seems to be winning it, mostly through his speed, accuracy, and familiarity with the NFL, which the young player can’t have.
Darius Cooper’s Big Break
PHOTO: Philadelphia Eagles/Facebook
Darius Cooper is a rookie who has made more of a splash than any other. His preseason opener featured six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown, which has earned him a reputation early on. Rookie players are usually fighting for a spot on the roster, and the best way to do it is to make a performance like that.
A.J. Dillon’s Physical Presence
Backup running back A.J. Dillon also stood out during the preseason. The main way he did it was by showcasing his amazing physical presence. He proved able to wear down the opponent’s defense.
When his skills are combined with those of Barkley, who’s much faster on his feet, the two make for a one-two punch that most teams wouldn’t have an answer to.
Jakorian Bennett Fitting In Fast
Jakorian Bennett, a cornerback who just recently joined the team, has integrated into it rather quickly. At this point, he’s competing for the spot in the rotation, and if his speed and ball skills remain as they are now, he will get it.
Setbacks and Injuries
The camp wasn’t without a few setbacks, as well. Several key players have been limited or sidelined, including star receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith (back tightness), linebacker Zack Baun (back), wideout Elijah Cooks (shoulder), edge rusher Nolan Smith (concussion), and guard Kenyon Green.
None of the injuries the players are facing will have a long-term effect, but they are also interrupting the continuity, and this is noticeable in the passing game most of all. The shuffle has also given fringe players a chance to shine. That’s often the best way to have underdog players come out to the spotlight and find their place on the team.
Surprises Shaking Up the Roster Picture
The biggest and most pleasant surprise of the camp is the linebacker Jihaad Campbell. His instincts have been top-notch both in individual and team periods and have been praised by the defensive coaches.
Behind the top trio of Brown, Smith, and Jahan Dotson, the fight for the number four and five spots has been heating up. Elijah Cooks has had a presence in the drills, but Cooper’s players are impossible to ignore, as well. In the end, the Eagles could end up with a deep defensive roster, regardless of who makes the team, and they’ll be able to use that fact later on.
To Sum Up
Training camp 2025 has caused a lot of buzz among fans and experts. Some of the established stars have delivered what was expected of them, and some rookies have surprised everyone with an amazing performance.
New faces such as Darius Cooper and Moro Ojomo will definitely make their mark on the team.
As the preseason unfolds, the players will have the opportunity to showcase their skills, and they’ll earn a spot on the roster or remain on the bench until they prove themselves.
Eagles will try to keep their title, and it will be a challenge.

Alongside getting behind the Sixers and taking in the odd Union game, sports lovers in Philadelphia are firmly behind the Eagles.
The NFL team has risen to prominence more recently, particularly after winning the Super Bowl in 2018 and, most notably of all, last season, on a memorable occasion where the team got its revenge over the Chiefs. For many Eagles fans, it’s a day they’ll never forget.
The Eagles community deserved their special day out, with the team putting on an unforgettable performance against their nemesis. After winning their second Super Bowl, fans took to the streets of Philadelphia in celebration, and the nation was reminded of the team’s amazing support. A strong argument suggests that the Eagles have the best supporters behind them right now.
While many teams make this claim, Eagles fans edge out the competition for many people, especially as they haven’t always witnessed massive wins and been filled with potential picks when betting on NFL player props. There have been some well-documented tough times, making the victories even sweeter.
With that in mind, below are some key reasons why the Philadelphia Eagles have the best fans in the NFL.
Their Unwavering Loyalty
PHOTO: Lincoln Financial Field/Twitter/X
As we’ve already touched on, the Eagles haven’t always been in the running for the sport’s biggest prizes. Additionally, the team has experienced some notably challenging moments where many fans could’ve turned their back on the franchise or followed another team in another sport. However, despite these periods that essentially tested their loyalty, the Eagles fans still showcased their passion for the cause and were always there in their numbers backing the team.
As such, fans were rewarded for their loyalty when the team managed to get their hands on the Super Bowl prize last season for the first time since 2018.
A Passionate Fanbase
Alongside their unwavering loyalty, Eagles fans are also known for their distinct passion. Sure, plenty of fans chant throughout games and pump their players up, but Eagles home games are arguably far more intimidating than their rivals.
The cauldron of noise fans create makes for a testing encounter for other teams to navigate, with the fans’ energy and enthusiasm for their troops shining through regularly.
Known as one of the toughest places to go to, and not just because of the formidable team on the field, no opponent will enjoy coming to the Lincoln Financial Field this season.
Positive Impact
Because of their undeniable passion, Eagles fans have also been responsible for a number of positive instances associated with the team. This doesn’t revolve around the action on the field, either, with the team’s fans being involved in community work and a number of charitable efforts.
Blue-Collar Mentality Is Evident
While there are large populations of wealthy individuals, Philadelphia is primarily known as a blue-collar city. Therefore, the city’s significant middle-class population relates to the hardworking professionals representing their home, with many beloved stars giving their all on the field in the same way fans do in their day jobs.
Their Knowledge
Given the various ups and downs Philadelphia Eagles fans have experienced over the years, they’ve been forced to focus on the competition as a whole and not just look at the biggest and best teams at all times.
As a result, they generally have a deeper understanding of the game, as they know what can happen at either end of the scale.
The Eagles are one of the most active organizations when it comes to making trades.
Just one month after winning Super Bowl LIX the Eagles made two trades.
The first move swapped C.J Gardner-Johnson with Kenyon Green, which also saw the Eagles move up from the 6th round to the 5th round in 2026. However, last week both players were injured and will most likely miss the start of the regular season.
The other trade (on the same day) was a swap of Quarterbacks. The Eagles acquired pick 164, (used in the trade up to acquire Jihaad Campbell) and Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The price? Super Bowl champion QB Kenny Pickett.
With a handful of trades up and down throughout the 2025 Draft. The Eagles spent the rest of the spring focused elsewhere.
Then in June. The Eagles fixed one of their prior free agent errors by sending Bryce Huff to the 49ers for a 2026 conditional 5th round pick. Bringing their total picks in the 2026 draft to 10, with an expectation to receive an additional 3 comp picks.
Making Moves In August
The most recent move to add to the Eagles August history is the trade for CB Jakorian Bennett. Adding to the CB2 camp competition between Mac McWilliams, Kelee Ringo and Adoree Jackson.
A simple player for player swap saw the Eagles add to the secondary, and in return the Raiders added Thomas Booker to their defensive line.
Below we’ll look at the Eagles history in August, with a whopping 9 trades during the final month of the offseason in the Nick Sirianni era.
2024
8/22 PHI traded 2025 3rd and two 2025 7ths to WAS for WR Jahan Dotson and a 2025 5th
2023
8/29 PHI traded a 2025 6th to DEN for TE Albert Okwuegbunam and a 2025 7th
2022
8/15 PHI traded WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside to SEA for S Ugo Amadi
8/24 PHI traded S Ugo Amadi and a 2024 7th to TEN for a 2024 6th
8/30 PHI traded a 2023 5th and two 2024 6ths to NOLA for S C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2025 7th
8/31 PHI traded WR Jalen Reagor to MIN for a 2023 7th and a 2025 4th
2021
8/27 PHI traded a 2022 6th to JAX for QB Gardner Minshew
8/30 PHI traded OL Matt Pryor and a 2022 7th to IND for a 2022 6th
With a multitude of trade acquisitions for both starters and depth pieces happening in the month of August. Will the Eagles stay with their current roster? Or is another trade brewing with the 53 man roster deadline less than two weeks away on August 26th?
Philadelphia Eagles fans and bettors know that the team’s performance can be as unpredictable as the weather.
When betting on NFL games, particularly live odds, there’s a lot more to consider than just the stats.
Weather conditions play a significant role in shaping live betting odds, affecting player performance, game outcomes, and, ultimately, how bettors approach each play.
Let’s explore how factors like wind, rain, snow, and temperature shifts can sway the odds when placing bets on the Eagles.
How Weather Impacts Player Performance
Weather conditions can dramatically impact player performance, which is critical for live betting strategies. For instance, quarterbacks and wide receivers can struggle to complete passes in high winds, affecting yardage totals and touchdown probabilities. Wind speeds over 15 mph make passing plays riskier, pushing teams to favor running plays over passing. For the Eagles, a run-heavy approach could lead to a lower-scoring game, impacting over/under bets.Rain introduces a new set of challenges, primarily for ball handling. Rain-slicked footballs are harder to throw, catch, and even kick, often leading to turnovers or missed field goals. Bettors need to monitor pregame and real-time weather updates to anticipate how rain might force a change in the Eagles’ strategy, which could shift live odds as plays unfold.
Key Weather Elements and Their Effect on Live Odds
Live betting requires quick thinking and adaptability, especially when weather elements start influencing the flow of the game.
Here’s how specific weather factors affect live football odds and betting opportunities:
Wind
Wind affects both passing accuracy and kicking distance, two critical components of a successful NFL game. When betting live, it’s important to track real-time wind speeds. For instance, when winds reach 20 mph or more, kickers may struggle with accuracy, especially on longer field goals, making unders more attractive for points-based bets.If the Eagles face strong winds, look for more ground-based plays, which slow the game and potentially keep scores lower.
Rain
Rain often transforms games into strategic battles where the advantage leans towards teams with strong defensive and running strategies. As a result, rain-soaked games are usually slower-paced and lower-scoring, which can heavily influence live point spreads and totals. With a rain forecast, bettors might find that the Eagles pivot to rushing plays more frequently, especially if passing conditions are poor. Adjusting bets to favor lower scores or betting on fewer passing yards can align with this shift.
Snow and Cold Temperatures
Snow and extreme cold can freeze up even the best offenses. While Philadelphia may not be new to these conditions, extreme cold and snowfall often lead to fewer passes and more conservative plays. The slick field makes it harder for receivers to run precise routes, which can reduce scoring. For live bettors, snowy conditions might push bets towards the under, as defenses tend to have the upper hand in low-visibility, low-traction games.Cold weather also affects fatigue and stamina, especially for players not accustomed to frigid temperatures. When the Eagles play in freezing conditions, expect fatigue to play a role in the second half, potentially affecting both point totals and the likelihood of late-game heroics. Knowing this trend can help bettors anticipate scoring drops as the game progresses.
How Real-Time Weather Updates Shift Betting Strategies
PHOTO: 3D Animation Production Company/Pixabay
Live odds change rapidly, and weather updates play a substantial role in these shifts. With mobile betting apps providing constant access to game and weather data, bettors can make quick adjustments based on the latest conditions. For example, if wind gusts suddenly increase mid-game, bettors can anticipate fewer field goal attempts and adjust their wagers accordingly. The same goes for sudden rain or snow showers, which might prompt teams to rely on short, safer plays.
Philadelphia’s weather can change quickly, especially during the fall and winter months, and live bettors must stay vigilant. A strategic bettor will monitor both team tendencies and real-time weather shifts, understanding how these changes can affect a game’s pace, score, and play style. Adapting to these weather-induced changes quickly gives bettors a distinct advantage in leveraging the Eagles’ weather-driven live odds.
Conclusion
Betting on the Eagles involves more than analyzing matchups and stats; weather plays an undeniable role in shaping live odds. Each weather element—wind, rain, snow, or cold—presents unique challenges that influence player performance, team strategy, and, ultimately, the odds.Successful live betting relies on quick responses to these real-time conditions and an understanding of how the Eagles adapt to various weather challenges.
By factoring in both live updates and historical performance data, bettors can make informed decisions that improve their chances of accurately predicting game outcomes, even when the weather takes a turn.
PHILADELPHIA — Saquon Barkley made a dazzling backward hurdle during a stellar performance and Nakobe Dean had a game-saving interception to help the Philadelphia Eagles to their fourth straight win, 28-23 over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday night.
Barkley had 27 carries for 159 yards and a touchdown. He also had three receptions for 40 yards and a TD.
The Eagles (6-2) held on after coach Nick Sirianni wasted chances to put easy points on the board. The Eagles went 0 for 2 on fourth down and were 0 for 3 on 2-point conversions, forcing them to let Jake Elliott try a 57-yard field goal with 2:16 left.
Elliott missed, giving the Jaguars (2-7) the ball at their own 47-yard line.
Eagles defensive back Avonte Maddox was flagged 18 yards for pass interference that helped move the ball to the Eagles 13.
But Jacksonville’s second-half rally ended when Trevor Lawrence’s terrible pass was picked off in the end zone by Dean for the linebacker’s first career interception.
The Eagles have found their groove out of the bye, riding a winning streak behind Jalen Hurts and Barkley that has thrust them into the thick of the NFC East race.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (1) scrambles under pressure from Jacksonville Jaguars during an NFL football game Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, in Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Matt Slocum)
Hurts was 18 of 24 for 230 yards. He threw for two scores and ran for another.
DeVonta Smith nearly matched Barkley with a play straight out of a video game on a one-handed 25-yard TD grab – reminiscent of New York Jets receiver Garrett Wilson’s catch last week – late in the fourth that stretched the Eagles’ lead to 28-16.
But all those lost points haunted the Eagles.
Lawrence – 16 of 31 for 169 yards and two interceptions – ran for two touchdowns for the Jaguars, including a 4-yard scramble with 4:04 left that made it 28-23.
The Eagles can credit Barkley for this win.
Barkley, already proving a pivotal free agent pickup for the Eagles, starred in another dominant effort with arguably the most acrobatic play of the NFL season.
The play that left mouths agape: Hurts dumped a pass to Barkley in the second quarter and he faked out one defender and used a filthy spin move that left another Jaguars defender flailing on the ground before he pulled off a split-leg, backward leap over Jacksonville cornerback Jarrian Jones for the 14-yard gain.
The reverse hurdle stunned the Jaguars and set up an Eagles field goal for 10-0 lead. But Barkley also had a costly mistake.
Lawrence ignited Jacksonville’s second-half rally when he scored on a 1-yard run and threw a 2-point conversion pass late in the third to make it 22-8. Barkley then fumbled on the next possession, the loose ball scooped by Travon Walker and returned 35 yards for a TD. The Jaguars cut it to 22-16 after another 2-point conversion.
The Eagles, wearing their fan-favorite, throwback Kelly green uniforms, let Barkley handle the bulk of the offense in the first half.
Barkley sure didn’t settle for the routine plays for much of the game. Before he hurdled for a first down, Barkley hauled in an over-the-shoulder 20-yard touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone to make it 7-0 – significant for the lead, yes, but also the Eagles scored their first points in the first quarter all season.
After an Eagles touchdown was wiped out on offensive pass interference, Barkley got the ball on the next play and hustled 19 yards for the score and a 16-0 halftime lead.
Unhappy homecoming
Jaguars coach Doug Pederson fell to 0-2 against the Eagles since Philadelphia fired him after the 2020 season.
Injuries
Jaguars: OL Mitch More was treated for a concussion. … OL Anton Harrison suffered a knee injury. … OL Cooper Hodges was carted off the field with a leg injury in the third quarter.
Eagles: WR A.J. Brown suffered a knee injury. … LB Ben VanSumeren also suffered a concussion.
Eagles lose star receiver A.J. Brown against Jacksonville to knee injury
Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown left Sunday’s game against Jacksonville with a knee injury.
Brown was slow to get up following his final catch of the game late in the first half. He had two catches for 36 yards before he was ruled out in the second half.
Brown already missed three games this season with a hamstring injury. He has two 100-yard receiving games this season and entered Sunday with 21 catches for 408 yards and three touchdowns.
Brown had 106 catches for 1,456 yards and seven touchdowns last season for the Eagles and has been one of the top receivers in the NFL since his rookie season with Tennessee in 2019. Brown signed a three-year contract extension in April that included $84 million in guaranteed money.
For Jalen Hurts and Joe Burrow In 2024 — the Best Football Is About to Be Played.
During the Covid-restricted 2020 NFL Draft — it was Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow who would become the first selection. As a sophomore at LSU — Burrow didn’t just break FBS records- he shattered them throwing sixty touchdowns in a season that captured not only the Heisman Trophy but also the National Championship.
In the opening week in 2020 — Burrow was the only one of the rookie quarterbacks to start before suffering a season-ending knee injury against Washington. Much like Jalen Hurts — Burrow’s second season was magical. The Bengals roared into the AFC Playoffs and defeated the Raiders 26–19, the Titans 19–16, and the Chiefs in Overtime stunning Arrowhead Stadium in the AFC Championship Game by a score 23–20 before falling to the Rams in Super Bowl LVI 23–20 — Cincinnati’s first appearance since 1988.
PHOTO: Philadelphia Eagles
And like the Eagles- the Bengals have been trying to get back to the Super ever since. In 2022, they would lose a rematch in the AFC Championship Game to those Chiefs. In 2023 — Cincinnati wouldn’t even qualify for the playoffs with a 10–8 record. So far in 2024 — the Bengals are 3–4 and clutching to the hope of a narrowing window that they can still make the AFC Playoffs with some Burrow and Ja’marr Chase late-season magic.
In perhaps one of the most quarterback-rich NFL Drafts since 1983 that included Justin Herbert, Jordan Love, and Tua Tagovailoa — Jalen Hurts was selected by the Eagles in the second round with the 53rd pick. Jalen’s path to become the franchise quarterback was quite different from Burrow’s. He had to supplant Carson Wentz — who had just signed a four-year $128 million extension a year earlier. But on a cold 2020 evening in Green Bay — when Wentz headed to the bench and Hurts headed to be the future of the Eagles — the era of Jalen began.
Two years later — the high-powered Eagles offense was also in the Super Bowl. Even now in 2024 — the Eagles are striving to overcome that loss to the Kansas City Chiefs 38–35. The team that Kansas City beat to earn a trip to Super Bowl LVI and a matchup against the Eagles was Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals.
What is at stake this Sunday in Cincinnati isn’t just a week eight NFL matchup. For Burrow and the Chiefs — it’s a must-win home matchup. Five losses this early in the NFL season don’t bode well for a crowded AFC Playoff field. For Hurts, Barkley — it’s another matchup to prove that the Eagles offense is once again prolific with the return of Devonta Smith and Brown coupled with an Eagles defense that once again matches rookie talent against one of the best wide receivers in the NFL and a young secondary featuring Quinyon Mitchell desperately waiting for that first professional pick.
The answer to the question about whether Hurts or Burrow were the better pick themselves is not yet clear.
It’s been a while since the Eagles have been in such a good position in their secondary.
They’ve always had issues there, and aside from 2022, they’ve never really had a trustworthy secondary.
With their talent back there, they should be in good hands for the foreseeable future.
Other than Darius Slay, whose veteran presence is valuable for the other defensive backs, the Eagles are extremely young at that position. The next oldest players in the secondary behind Slay are CJGJ and Isaiah Rodgers, who are only 26 years old.
Everyone else is 25 and younger and has a ton of time to create chemistry with one another.
The other young guys, including Reed Blankenship, Kelee Ringo, Eli Ricks, and Sydney Brown, have also played well. Sydney Brown seems like he could be a starting safety for the Eagles for the next 5+ years, and the other guys look like they can be valuable to the team, too.
The biggest thing this young group needs to work on is forcing some interceptions. They only have two as a group so far, and Reed Blankenship has both. Once they can figure that out, they will be a menace to the league for years.
This young group is full of talent. This is rare for the Eagles, and we should all be excited about their bright futures.
The Philadelphia Eagles (4-2) visit the Cincinnati Bengals (3-4) at 1 p.m. ET this Sunday, Oct. 27. Let’s preview this game.
Battle of the Offenses; Barkley’s Time to Shine?
Looking at the numbers heading into this one, the Eagles and Bengals are somewhat similar. Both possessing top-10 offenses and below-average defenses in expected points average (EPA), we could have a shootout on our hands.
Below are the Eagles’ numbers through six games. Their offensive (OFF) and defensive (DEF) totals are listed, including league rank and the actual statistic in parenthesis:
OFF Dropback EPA: 16th (0.074)
OFF Rushing EPA: 4th (0.048)
Overall OFF EPA/play: 8th (0.062)
DEF Dropback EPA: 17th (0.038)
DEF Rushing EPA: 16th (-0.062)
Overall DEF EPA/play: 20th (0.000)
For the Bengals:
OFF Dropback EPA: 4th (0.207)
OFF Rushing EPA: 22nd (-0.108)
Overall OFF EPA/play (0.096)
DEF Dropback EPA: 21st (0.063)
DEF Rushing EPA: 30th (0.049)
Overall DEF EPA/play: 24th (0.058)
The Eagles’ biggest strength is running the football without any true clear weaknesses on the defense—they’re just okay. As for the Bengals, they excel in the passing department but have one of the worst rushing defenses in the NFL. So, this is good news for Saquon Barkley.
Following a 176-yard demolition of the New York Giants’ rushing defense last week, it’s Barkley’s time to do it again. The explosive running back could gash the Bengals’ defense time and time again, potentially leading to a smooth victory. He’ll be an X-factor.
As for Cincinnati, Joe Burrow’s arm will be a key to a win for them. The Eagles’ defense hasn’t gotten dissected by a quarterback this season, but they haven’t exactly played anyone as good as Burrow—Jordan Love is the closest, and he scored 29 points.
Expect a lot of touchdowns.
Where a Win Could Put the Eagles
Despite objectively underperforming until their 28-3 victory over the Giants, the Eagles are one of the top contenders in the NFC record-wise. A win would match the 5-2 records of the Washington Commanders, Minnesota Vikings, and Green Bay Packers—they are all tied for the second-best winning percentage in the conference. The Detroit Lions (5-1) and Chicago Bears (4-2) are the only others with two or fewer losses.
This season, the Eagles very much control their own destiny. After a really inspiring effort in New York (it was their first double-digit victory in 364 days; yes, it has been that bad), they can prove whether or not this team has turned it around. More than anything, the showdown in Cincinnati is a prove-it game.
Eagles, Bengals Injury Reports
Now, to the injury reports. As of Friday, Oct. 25, the Eagles are more banged up than the Bengals. Let’s take a look.
Wide receiver Tee Higgins is questionable with a quad injury for Cincinnati. Over his last three games, he is averaging over 80 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles’ Dallas Goedert was ruled out on Friday with a hamstring injury. The same ailment applied to defensive tackle Bryon Young, and he was placed on injured reserve. Guard Mekhi Becton is out with a concussion.
The Eagles have not won a game against the Bengals since Dec. 24, 2000. They haven’t won a road game against them since Oct. 28, 1979. Can Barkley, Jalen Hurts, and the 2024 Birds break the curse?
