  • Why ‘The Toxic Avenger’ Is the Superhero Movie We Need Right Now

The wait is over! The Toxic Avenger arrives in theaters today, and Troma fans can finally see writer-director Macon Blair’s fresh (but still gross, gory, and proudly unrated) take on the legendary cult franchise.

In a splattery movie with a lot going on—a sinister health-care megacorp that’s poisoning people and the environment; a hero with a terminal illness who transforms into a badass mutant; Elijah Wood as you’ve never seen him before; a nu-metal “monstercore” band that moonlights as assassins; another gang of assassins, this time with a preppy jock aesthetic; a kid who just really wants to dance; and more—The Toxic Avenger comes back to one important thing: the father-son relationship at its core.

io9 got a chance to talk to Blair and star Peter Dinklage earlier this summer, just ahead of The Toxic Avenger’s big Hall H moment at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

“I didn’t want to literally step in the same footsteps as the original, where he was more of an adolescent character and he’s trying to get a girlfriend,” Blair said. “So I wanted to do something different. Also, I’m a dad and I think, not in a literal way, but I’m always trying to look for some kind of way to personalize the script that I’m working on. That seemed like the way into it for me, was to have the heart of it about basically a dad and a kid and them trying to figure their situation out.”

What’s more, “I think there’s a sweetness in the original movies too, and as much as we wanted to preserve the gore and the weird comedy and all that stuff, I wanted to try and preserve the sweetness too.”

Dinklage plays main character Winston Gooze as a human, but stunt performer Luisa Guerreiro takes over after Winston’s transformation into Toxie. Dinklage continues to do Winston’s voice, though, and the level of collaboration is impressive.

“We had the luxury of a week or so of rehearsals—not all films get that—but Luisa and Macon and I had that time together and Luisa, who is in the suit, is just so good at what she does,” Dinklage said. “She got all my mannerisms down, just sort of studied me like a hawk and that’s because of her homework, her due diligence, is why a lot of people think it’s me in the suit. And of course the voiceover added a different, strange element to it all—that it’s my voice. It just worked, in my opinion, seamlessly.”

In a key scene, our irradiated protagonist steals the spotlight with an unexpected karaoke moment. The song is “Overkill” by Motörhead, an obvious nod to the band’s late lead singer, Lemmy—a longtime Troma supporter who popped up in Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, among other films from the studio. But it wasn’t Blair’s first choice, surprisingly.

“The honest story behind that is in the script I had written it to be a song by Danzig and then Danzig wanted editorial control over the scene,” he recalled. “So we were like, ‘Yeah, we can’t really do that,’ and the next choice was Motörhead. But I’m a big believer in, like, whatever it ends up being is what it was absolutely supposed to be and in hindsight I feel like a fucking fool for trying to make it Danzig in the first place. It should have been Motörhead from the beginning and I’m glad that’s how it ended up. In my mind I was like, Danzig’s from New Jersey so that sort of makes sense too, but Motörhead is a much better option.”

(The original song choice was Danzig’s “Mother,” by the way.)

As Winston goes on his blood-splattered path of revenge and redemption, his point of view shifts from “sometimes it’s better to do nothing” to “sometimes you gotta do something.” Blair thinks that makes him the perfect hero for our times.

“I like the idea that even if the thing that you’re doing is disorganized or you’re doing it in the incorrect way, just trying to do something is better than nothing at all,” Blair said. “The fear of getting it wrong, I think, sometimes can keep people from trying whatever the thing is, and I like the idea that in the movie Winston doesn’t really know what he’s doing; he doesn’t exactly have a plan, but he’s doing the best he can with what he has.”

  • What to stream: ‘Warriors’ album, ‘The Dating Game’ killer, ‘NCIS: Origins’ and Travis Kelce’s games

What to stream: ‘Warriors’ album, ‘The Dating Game’ killer, ‘NCIS: Origins’ and Travis Kelce’s games

Travis Kelce adds game show host to his growing resume with “Are You Smarter than a Celebrity?” and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Warriors,” a musical concept album inspired by the 1979 cult classic film, are some of the new television, films, music and games headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists: Anna Kendrick stars in a movie about the time a serial killer made his way onto the television show “The Dating Game,” Nintendo fans get Super Mario Party Jamboree and “NCIS” looks back at character Leroy Jethro Gibbs in “NCIS: Origins,” a series set 25 years before the original.

NEW MOVIES TO STREAM OCT. 14-20

    — In 1978, a serial killer made his way onto the television show “The Dating Game.” Rodney Alcala was already a murderer by the time he appeared on the show as one of three bachelors seeking a date with a woman named Cheryl Bradshaw. He even won. Had they done a background check, they might have discovered that he’d been on the FBI’s 10 most wanted fugitives list and already been imprisoned for violent crimes against an 8-year-old. In the new Netflix film “Woman of the Hour,” streaming on Friday, Oct. 18, Anna Kendrick (also making her directorial debut) stars as the woman on the show (spelled Sheryl here) and puts the attention back on the victims. “Woman of the Hour” received good reviews out of the Toronto Film Festival last year.

    — If fake serial killers are more your style, “MaXXXine” starts streaming on MAX on Friday, Oct. 18. The third film in Ti West and Mia Goth’s unlikely trilogy (following “X” and “Pearl”) takes the audience to the sleazy underground of 1980s Hollywood. Goth’s Maxine Minx is an adult film star hoping for a big break in mainstream movies. She gets a shot from Elizabeth Debicki’s refined director. But she’s also running from her past and a killer terrorizing the town. It’s very stylized and a little silly and underdeveloped but it’s a fun watch with a fun, extended Lily Collins cameo.

    — And for those looking for a comedy, Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage play brothers, and former partners in crime in a starry new movie coming to Prime Video on Thursday. Brolin is the one trying for a more normal life when Dinklage convinces him to embark on a road trip to a promised big score. “Brothers,” directed by Max Barbakow (who made the delightful time loop romantic comedy “Palm Springs”) also features Marisa Tomei, Glenn Close, Brendan Fraser and Taylour Paige in its big ensemble.

NEW MUSIC TO STREAM OCT. 14-20

    — On Friday, Oct. 18, Lin-Manuel Miranda — in his first full post-“Hamilton” musical — and the award-winning actor and playwright Eisa Davis will release “Warriors,” a musical concept album inspired by the 1979 cult classic film that follows a street gang as they make their way from the Bronx to their home turf of Coney Island amid an all-out blitz. There are some notable departures here, including some gender-flipping and inventive genre-melding, no doubt an extension of its all-star cast, which features everyone from Ms. Lauryn Hill and Marc Anthony to Colman Domingo, Busta Rhymes and more. Last month, the duo told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that their version of “Warriors” is about unity and peace. But it sounds full of action.

NEW SHOWS TO STREAM OCT. 14-20

    — Austin Stowell plays a younger version of Mark Harmon’s “NCIS” character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs in “NCIS: Origins,” a series set 25 years before the original. We meet this Gibbs as he’s beginning his career as a naval investigator. “NCIS: Origins” debuts Monday on CBS and streams on Paramount+.

    — A new Peacock docuseries digs into the wild but true story of Elizabeth Finch, a former writer on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.” Finch wrote storylines she claimed were inspired by her own life and medical history, including a battle with bone cancer. She later admitted to lying. The three-part docuseries also tells the story of Finch’s ex-wife, who was the one to expose her deceit in the first place. “Anatomy of Lies” streams Tuesday on Peacock.

Travis Kelce adds game show host to his growing resume. The Kansas City Chiefs tight-end hosts “Are You Smarter than a Celebrity?” beginning Wednesday on Prime Video. On the show, adult contestants answer elementary grade questions with a pool of celebrities on standby ready to help.

    — In the Apple TV+’s dramedy “Shrinking,” Jason Segel plays Jimmy, a therapist grieving the death of his wife and trying to navigate being a single parent to a teen daughter. In season one, he begins to give his patients unorthodox advice, like inviting one (Luke Tennie) to move into his home. We also saw a new kind of family blossom between Jimmy, his colleagues (Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams), and neighbor (Christa Miller). Season two of the heartwarming comedy premieres Wednesday on the streamer.

    — In season three of Netflix’s “The Lincoln Lawyer,” Mickey Haller is rocked by the murder of his former client Gloria Days (Fiona Rene), but he also agrees to defend the man accused of killing her. The story is based on No. 5 of Michael Connelly’s The Lincoln Lawyer book series called “The Gods of Guilt.” It premieres Thursday on Netflix.

    — The “Sheldon-verse” continues with “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” debuting Thursday on CBS. The series stars Montana Jordan as Sheldon’s older brother George “Georgie” Cooper and his new bride Mandy, played by Emily Osment. It’s a sequel to “Young Sheldon” which wrapped last May after seven seasons. Episodes also stream on Paramount+.

“Hysteria!”, coming to Peacock on Friday, Oct. 18, follows members of a high school band who pretend to be in a Satanic cult for attention. Their plan falls apart when town members target the teens in a witch hunt. The series stars Julie Bowen of “Modern Family” and “Evil Dead” star Bruce Campbell.

    NEW VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY

    — Holiday season is almost here, and for Nintendo fans, there’s no party like a Mario Party. Super Mario Party Jamboree follows the classic formula: It’s a virtual board game in which most of the spaces lead to a multiplayer contest. Up to four people can play in-person or online, though one online mode lets up to 20 compete in a hectic “Koopathlon.” There are 22 characters, seven different boards and more than 110 minigames covering the gamut of Mario Party silliness, from races to brawls to minigolf. And there are few cooperative challenges, like a cooking game where four chefs try to slice and dice in rhythm. The festivities start Thursday on Switch.

    — Barcelona-based Nomada Studio gained plenty of fans and a handful of awards with 2018’s stylish Gris, a haunting tale in which a young girl worked through grief by solving puzzles and collecting stars. The indie developer’s Neva starts in a similarly gloomy place: A warrior named Alba sets out with a white wolf, Neva, to explore a dying world. Nomada calls it “a love song dedicated to our children, our parents and our planet,” and the arresting, painterly landscapes will look familiar to fans of Gris. The journey begins Tuesday on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S, Switch and PC.

  • Peter Dinklage Is Optimistic ‘Toxic Avenger’ Reboot Will Get Released and “Have Its Day in the Toxic Sun”

Peter Dinklage Is Optimistic ‘Toxic Avenger’ Reboot Will Get Released and “Have Its Day in the Toxic Sun”

Peter Dinklage is so proud of his The Toxic Avenger reboot that he just wants more people to finally get to see it.

The Emmy-winning actor was recently asked if the film could get a wide release soon, given it was “a really big hit” after it opened the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, last year.

“No, I’m not a producer on it. I don’t know,” Dinklage admitted to ComicBook.com. “I do want it to get out there into the world because it was a really big hit at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and Macon Blair, the writer/director who is also in The Thicket … He’s incredible. He’s one of my favorite people and favorite artists.”

The Game of Thrones alum added, “So hopefully it will have its day in the toxic sun.”

The Toxic Avenger, a reimagining of the original 1984 cult-favorite movie, follows Dinklage’s Winston Gooze, a janitor whose employer refuses to cover treatment for his terminal illness. But after robbing the company, Winston falls into toxic waste and aims to right society’s wrongs as the Toxic Avenger, a mutant hero.

The horror-comedy, which received a 92 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes from 25 reviews after its global premiere at Fantastic Fest in September 2023, has yet to receive a release date.

The reboot also stars Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon.

Earlier this year, it was also announced that Matt Bors and Fred Harper were teaming up for a new The Toxic Avenger comic, from indie publisher AHOY Comics. The first of the five-issue comic book series is due out Oct. 9.

Lear Rex Movie Cast Adds Rachel Brosnahan, LaKeith Stanfield, Peter Dinklage, & More

Lear Rex, an upcoming King Lear movie adaptation starring Al Pacino and Jessica Chastain, has added Rachel Brosnahan, LaKeith Stanfield, Peter Dinklage, and more to the cast.

Lear Rex is a forthcoming film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s King Lear. Bernard Rose wrote and directed the film, which Barry Navidi is producing.

The newly announced cast members of Lear Rex include Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) as Cordelia, Brosnahan (Superman) as Regan, Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as the Fool, Danny Huston (The Crow) as Albany, Chris Messina (The Boogeyman) as Cornwall, Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah) as Edmund, Ted Levine (The Silence of the Lambs) as Kent, Matthew Jacobs (Vice) as Gloucester, Rhys Coiro (Entourage) as Oswald, and Stephen Dorff (Blade) as Poor Tom.

Pacino, meanwhile, is playing King Lear, while Chastain is playing Goneril.

What else do we know about Lear Rex?

“In Lear Rex, an aging King divides his land between his three daughters to prevent future conflict,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “But he rejects the young daughter who loves him and places his trust in her malevolent sisters, who strip him of his power and condemn him to a wretched wasteland of horror and insanity.”

“It is enormously exciting to get the opportunity to work with this extraordinary cast that Al, Barry, and Sharon have put together to tackle this radical, but accessible adaptation of Shakespeare’s greatest play,” Rose said in a statement.

Navidi added, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate with Bernard Rose. His artistic vision, combined with a talented ensemble cast of players led by Al Pacino, promises to take us on a remarkable and unforgettable cinematic experience. We are merging the worlds of Shakespeare and Hollywood. This marks the commencement of an exciting new chapter, one that Al has poured his heart and soul into. It is a privilege for me to join forces with my dear friend once more, and to contribute to his enduring legacy.”

Lear Rex will begin filming on August 12, 2024, in Los Angeles. A release date has not yet been announced.
