It’s not clear what sparked the fire.
Footage from a KCRA 3 crew at the scene showed Acacia Avenue blocked off as firefighters worked to handle the fire.
The person found dead has not yet been identified.

The Times spoke to several therapists, social workers, researchers and organizations serving Thai and Asian Americans to examine how treatment and recovery can be tailored toward their needs. These recommendations emerged: addressing a client’s practical needs, involving family and community in their care and practicing mindfulness in the context of community.
Addressing clients’ practical needs first
Gordon Hall, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Oregon, explained that Asian Americans have high dropout rates after going to therapy. Helping them solve practical problems can be a way to keep them engaged.
“[Some therapists] may spend the first three weeks on [a client’s] thoughts and feelings, and maybe that will eventually get to the person’s practical problems,” Hall said. “But for many Asian Americans, they may think: What do my thoughts and feelings have to do with this conflict I’m having with my mom, or this issue with my boss about asking for a raise?”
Natyra Na Takuathung, a case manager at Asian Pacific Counseling & Treatment Centers, works with psychiatric social worker Wanda Pathomrit to help clients, many of whom are Thai immigrants, apply for social benefits. Pathomrit meets with clients to understand their mental health anxieties, and Na Takuathung can help them apply for programs like CalFresh or CalWorks.
Pathomrit explained that she integrates case management into her therapy sessions because many clients with depression, trauma or avoidance behaviors may struggle to maintain relationships with case managers or follow through on referrals. Instead of separating the roles, she uses real-world situations — navigating the Department of Public Social Services or substance treatment centers — as opportunities to build coping skills, practice emotional regulation and foster self-compassion.
“By coaching in the moment, I help clients grow confidence and self-esteem while accessing services,” Pathomrit said. “For high-need, high-risk cases, this intensive approach is not ‘extra’ — it’s critical for progress.”
But some clients are hesitant to accept help, explained Na Takuathung, because they believe they will “burden” society by doing so.
“They had this idea that if they did not ask for public benefits, then they were ‘good immigrants,’” Na Takuathung said. “They would think it’s better that they struggled and made their own money, and even if it wasn’t enough, they would just struggle in silence.”
The choice is ultimately up to them, Na Takuathung said. But she explains how these programs can relieve some of their stress, reminding them that they do not have to feel guilty.
“You’ve been living in this country. You contributed to this country, too,” Na Takuathung said. “You deserve kindness.”
Involving family in care
In a study examining culturally competent treatments for Asian Americans, Hall and co-author Janie Hong explain that Western-based approaches tend to emphasize individualism and personal reflection.
“You go in, you have to talk about your problems, you have to verbalize what’s going on inside to a stranger within 50 minutes, and that healing happens through this vocalization of your internal experiences,” said Hong, a clinical associate professor at Stanford Medicine.
In contrast, many Asian communities are rooted in collectivist cultures, where identity and wellness are deeply intertwined with family and group harmony.
“If you’re in a community where everyone’s supposed to be taking care of you and you’re supposed to be taking care of them, if you have a problem, that implicates your whole group,” Hall said. “Approaches that are very focused on the individual … may deter Asian Americans from seeking treatment.”
As the chief clinical officer of Richmond Area Multi-Services, one of the country’s first agencies addressing Asian American and Pacific Islander communities’ needs for culturally competent services, Christina Shea has observed the value of involving family members in a person’s care.
“If you work with [a client] in the Western psychology, it helps because that’s one unit,” Shea said. “But if you work with, say, somebody from Southeast Asia [and] you work with one individual, that’s not enough. That’s not a unit, because that person is connected with the family.”
Phramaha Dusit Sawaengwong sees these dynamics frequently as a monk at Wat Thai of Los Angeles. He commonly observes conflict when immigrant parents’ high hopes and expectations clash with their children’s own career aspirations.

Language barriers can exacerbate the disagreement. A common Thai word used to describe suffering is hua òk ja tàek, which means that one’s chest (heart area) is about to shatter. But parents with limited English may have difficulty conveying this sentiment to their child.
“[They] want to say something, but [they] don’t know how to say it,” he said.
Since parents often visit him at the temple for counseling help, he advises them to let their child absorb all the different opportunities available to them and to let them bloom.
“Don’t expect … just let them learn,” Sawaengwong said.
Support can extend beyond family.
Danielle Ung, a counseling and health psychology assistant professor at Bastyr University, is examining the mental health toll on Southeast Asian students during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. She works with patients to identify communities where they can receive support, viewing community as “concentric circles that surround that person.”
“Community can mean friends, extended families, adopted families, even the community which you live in,” Ung said.
Pam Evagee and Ta Sanalak are volunteer teachers at Wat Thai temple who coordinate Thai-language lessons and cultural programs to foster communication and understanding between family members. They ask parents to understand how living in the U.S. can influence their child’s beliefs while explaining to the student the importance of learning traditional customs because of where their parents grew up.
“We understand the parent because we are Thai, and we understand the kid because we’ve lived here [in the U.S.] for quite some time,” Sanalak said.
Families can also support each other at Wat Thai.
Some kids may be the only Thai student at their school, explained Evagee. At the temple, they can form friendships with other Thai students who understand their challenges. And many parents will cook meals together at the temple for their children while sharing advice on handling conflicts within families.
Mindfulness is a core tenet of Buddhism. According to the Pew Research Center, 90% of adults in Thailand identify as Buddhist, and many Thai Americans continue to practice the religion.
According to Hall, many Western therapies incorporate mindfulness, but the focus remains on the individual, whereas Eastern-based mindfulness practices account for the self within a community.
“There’s what’s called loving kindness meditation, where you focus on someone who’s done something for you,” Hall said. “You might meditate on your mother to the extent that she’s taken care of you, the gratitude you have for [her] and what you [owe] her.”
Buddhist monk Phiphop Phuphong frequently employs this approach when visiting people who are ill or hospitalized.
A diabetic man who had his leg amputated expressed deep grief over the loss and shame at “becoming a burden,” feeling dependent on his mother and sister. Phuphong guided him through mindfulness exercises to help him find peace with his new reality while encouraging him to stay strong for his mother’s and sister’s sake.
“Your body is your present,” Phuphong said through an interpreter. “Bring your mind back to your home.”
Health policies and training have come a long way
The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health has services to reach underserved communities. It supports cultural competency through translation and interpreting services, culturally and linguistically inclusive services and bilingual bonuses for employees. But language is just the start.
“We’re trying to cover all of our bases, but I do think there’s still a lot of work to be done,” said Dr. Lisa Wong, who heads the department. “And I don’t think we’re going to make a huge amount of progress until we bring a more diverse workforce into mental health.”
Wong added that it is difficult to recruit clinical professionals from diverse ethnic backgrounds because many new immigrants and their children choose higher-earning professions rather than mental health fields.
In addition, much of the training and education for practitioners are still based on Western concepts of mental health and recovery. Many evidence-based models were developed from research on predominantly Eurocentric populations, explained Carl Highshaw, executive director of the National Assn. of Social Workers’ California chapter.
“While these models have value, they often fail to capture the realities of immigrant and collectivist cultures,” Highshaw said. “We need to adapt and co-create interventions that honor cultural traditions, family systems and community networks.”
Hong appreciates that many therapists are now acknowledging clients’ cultural context. Equally important, she said, is finding methods that do not stereotype.
“Not all Asian Americans are going to respond to a problem-solving approach, and not all Asian Americans are collectivist or interdependent,” Hall added. “[Some] may really want the mainstream cognitive behavioral approach. They want to talk about their thoughts and feelings, and that may actually help them.”
Approaches that have worked for the Thai community and for Asian Americans can work for other communities too, Hall said.
For Highshaw, cultural competence is “not optional,” especially in a diverse state like California.
“Moving beyond a one-size-fits-all approach,” he said. “Ensuring that interventions reflect the lived experiences, values and strengths of the communities we serve … is an ethical responsibility.”

Prioritizing protein isn’t new, but the number of people doing so is.”Things tend to go to an extreme at first,” said Kim Flannery, director of nutrition at the Wisconsin Athletic Club. “And I think that’s kind of where we are right now.”It’s everywhere, from social media influencers and now in coffee shops.For the first time, Starbucks added protein to its menu of drinks, even allowing customers to add it to their cold foam on top of their coffee.The trend has continued at the grocery store, too.Emilie Williamson with Metro Market said she’s seen a substantial increase in protein-filled snacks. “A big goal of ours is to meet shoppers where they’re at,” Williamson said.Walking down the aisle of your local grocery store, you will quickly find protein in many everyday snacks, like muffins, cereal, pretzels, chips, and even protein pastries.Dr. Lisa Morselli, assistant professor in the division of endocrinology at Froedtert Hospital in Wisconsin, said this is where she gets worried about the quality of the product.”These are all foods that are pretty processed,” Morselli said. “The protein snack marketing probably gives people license to snack without really paying attention to what they put in their mouth.”Morselli believes the trend has been influenced by social media.Morselli said those on GLP-1 weight loss medications need more protein in their diet for muscle gain.Separately, those looking to lose weight can find success in protein, too, according to Dr. Morselli.”Protein is involved in the control of hunger,” Morselli said.Morselli explains that protein-rich foods can make you feel full longer.Protein can also be great for balancing blood sugar levels. Payton was also booked for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, a prohibited person in possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm in public, carrying a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, and possession of an unserialized firearm.The victim was reunited with her family.Police said Saturday that they later learned with the help of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and fingerprint analysis that one of the suspect’s real names was Stephanie Maghoney. She had an active felony warrant for her arrest in Tracy, California, for burglary. Maghoney was re-arrested for that outstanding warrant and now also faces a felony charge for false impersonation.

Two people were arrested after an older woman told bank employees in Ceres, California, that she had been kidnapped and was ordered to withdraw a large amount of money, according to police.
Wells Fargo employees reported the incident to police on Thursday. Police responded and immediately arrested a woman who police later learned identified herself with a false name.
Police said that 33-year-old Nicholas Payton, who is a felon on probation, was also involved in the kidnapping. He fled the area before police arrived but was arrested a block away.
Officers said they found a loaded rifle without a serial number in Payton’s backpack. Both suspects were booked on kidnapping, elder abuse charges and conspiracy to commit a crime charges.

The victim was reunited with her family.
Police said Saturday that they later learned with the help of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and fingerprint analysis that one of the suspect’s real names was Stephanie Maghoney.
She had an active felony warrant for her arrest in Tracy, California, for burglary.
Maghoney was re-arrested for that outstanding warrant and now also faces a felony charge for false impersonation.

Officers with the Elk Grove Police Department were dispatched around 1:30 a.m. to the Z Town – Asian Gastro Bar on Calvine Road just east of Elk Grove Florin Road.
Upon arrival, officers found three people with gunshot wounds. A man died from his injuries at the scene, while the other two were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, the police department said.
Shortly after arriving, officers learned a fourth person injured in the shooting had driven themselves to a hospital, the police department said.
The shooting occurred inside the bar. The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.
Amanda Tang, long time owner of Golden Donuts located next door says the shooting came as a surprise.

No arrests have been made at this time. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence, and MBI says details remain preliminary and could change as the investigation develops.

AND THERE WAS SOME HEROIC ACTIONS TONIGHT BECAUSE WE UNDERSTAND ONE OF THE THREE PEOPLE ABOARD THAT CHOPPER WAS PINNED UNDER THE CHOPPER, AND THE SAC FIRE CAPTAIN GOT BYSTANDERS FROM THE AREA TO LIFT THAT HELICOPTER OFF OF THAT VICTIM. AND THERE WERE TWO WOMEN, A MAN WHO WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL IN CRITICAL CONDITION. WE BELIEVE THAT IS A PILOT, A NURSE AND A PARAMEDIC. Federal officials announced Monday that investigators found DNA and other evidence linking Tyler Robinson to the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk as FBI Director Kash Patel faces increasing scrutiny over his leadership during the probe.
Patel said Monday that Robinson had sent a text before the shooting, saying he had an opportunity to “take out” Kirk and “he was going to do it because of his hatred for what Charlie stood for.” It is unclear who Robinson sent the text to, or whether that person alerted law enforcement. A similar message had allegedly been contained in a note that was destroyed, but recovered by law enforcement, Patel told Fox News.
“We learned some shocking things when we spoke to his family and friends,” Patel said in the interview.
The FBI collected a screwdriver containing Robinson’s DNA on the rooftop of a building at Utah Valley University and a firearm wrapped in a towel that had been discarded in a nearby wooded area. The towel also had Robinson’s DNA on it, Patel said, adding that the firearm was still being processed for forensic evidence.
Kirk, 31, was a beloved figure in the conservative movement who in death won praise for using dialogue to make his case. He was known for his unfiltered, hard-right opinions on heated topics such as abortion, immigration and gender identity, comments that frequently drew fierce criticism, particularly on college campuses he visited. His death by a single gunshot during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University shocked the nation and has led to vigorous debate over the motivations allegedly driving Robinson, the 22-year-old arrested on suspicion of murder.

During a round of interviews Sunday morning, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox claimed that Robinson subscribed to a “leftist ideology” and became radicalized after he dropped out of Utah State University in 2021. Robinson’s parents are registered Republicans. Their son is not affiliated with any political party and apparently holds more liberal views, authorities said.
Robinson has not been cooperating with investigators, but the people closest to him have been working with police, Cox said. So far, Robinson’s friends have painted a picture of a young person radicalized in the dark corners of the internet, according to the governor.
“Clearly, there was a lot of gaming going on, friends that have confirmed that there was kind of that deep, dark internet, Reddit culture and these other dark places of the internet where this person was going deep,” Cox said.
Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino said Robinson had an “obsession” with Kirk based on information the FBI has discovered so far, and it is looking at whether others knew of the threat he posed.
“Did they … hear it and think it was a joke? That is what we’re trying to find out now,” he told Fox News. “If there is a larger network here, we will get that out to the public as soon as we can.”
There has been much discussion over Robinson’s partner, whom he lives with and who Cox said is “transitioning from male to female.” Cox emphasized in a television interview over the weekend that the person did not have any knowledge of the attack and “was shocked when they found out about it.”
Moments before he was fatally shot on the Utah campus on Wednesday, Kirk was asked by an audience member how many mass shootings were carried out by trans people in the United States.
“Too many,” Kirk responded.
The Violence Prevention Project at Hamline University found that the majority of shootings where four or more people were wounded in a public location were carried out by men. Just 2% of shootings in the last decade were carried out by women and less than 1% were by transgender people, according to the data.
Robinson turned himself over to police after his father saw images of him in a long-sleeved T-shirt and jeans flashing across television and computer screens amid the FBI’s sweeping manhunt for the shooter. The family called their church bishop — also a neighbor — when Robinson threatened to take his own life, according to a law enforcement source who was not authorized to discuss the investigation.
Cox has emphasized that authorities are still trying to determine what led to the fatal shooting and what role, if any, political ideology played in the incident. More information may come to light Tuesday when Robinson is expected to be criminally charged.
“The why behind this … we’re all drawing lots of conclusions on how someone like this could be radicalized. And I think that those are important questions for us to ask and important questions for us to answer,” Cox told “Meet the Press.”

Meanwhile, Patel has faced criticism for his postings on X in the hours after the shooting saying that the “subject for the horrific shooting” had been taken into custody. Less than two hours later, investigators said they had ruled that person out as a suspect and released them after questioning. Robinson would not be arrested for another day.
The announcement was in sharp contrast to how the FBI and other law enforcement agencies typically handle the arrest of a potential suspect in high-profile cases, especially one where the identity of a suspect may not be immediately clear. In similar incidents in the past, law enforcement agencies will often not confirm whether anyone in custody is a suspect until several hours after their detention in an effort to solidify their involvement.
Law enforcement and political sources speaking on condition of anonymity said Patel’s message did not align with the cautious approach officials typically take in such situations and led to many questioning the director’s judgment.
Art Acevedo, former Houston and Austin police chief, said Patel’s lack of experience was evident in how he handled communications after the shooting.
“It’s unconscionable that at a historical high point for domestic and foreign threats, the FBI, the lead agency in combating them, is led by someone over his head. Our nation, the FBI, and the president deserve better,” Acevedo said.
Even before flying to Utah on Thursday, Patel held a meeting with senior agents and unleashed on them. Patel and Bongino said on the profanity-laced call Thursday morning that they were under intense pressure to arrest the killer, according to the New York Times, which cited three people familiar with the exchange. Patel also called out agents in Salt Lake City for not having shared photos of the suspect with him sooner.
Patel’s actions seemed to spark confusion and frustration, even among conservative and right-wing pundits and politicians.
“Suspect still on loose,” Fox News host Laura Ingraham posted on X after news that Patel’s initial announcement of a suspect being in custody was incorrect. “Unreal. Get him.”
Joseph Biggs, a member of the right-wing Proud Boys who was convicted and sentenced for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the capital, blasted Patel on social media.
“Stop all this click bait s— you keep doing,” he wrote. “It’s unbecoming of the office in which you represent.”
In an interview on “Fox & Friends” on Monday, Patel defended his handling of the investigation, including social media posts he made the day of the shooting.
“Could I have worded it a little better in the heat of the moment? Sure. But do I regret putting it out? Absolutely not,” he said. “I was telling the world what the FBI was doing as we were doing and I’m continuing to do that.”
Patel is scheduled to testify before the Senate and House judiciary committees Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, about Patel’s oversight of the FBI.

Good morning. I’m Bo Mason, commissioner for the Utah Department of Public Safety. I’d be remiss if we didn’t start off today to recognize the significance of, of the day, um. Historically on 9/11, law enforcement has come together as *** group to recognize and honor those that sacrificed. To preserve the ideals of this country, the freedoms of this country. And instead, we find ourselves today hunting *** murderer. We chose to violate our rights, the rights of an individual within this country. Just to recap yesterday’s events. At around 12:20 p.m. Political influencer Charlie Kirk was in Utah Valley University, participating in *** student sponsored event with Turning Point USA. Charlie was shot at that event. He was transported to *** local hospital where he later passed. Last night, his body was moved to the office, the state office of the medical examiner. We will continue to facilitate movements um to get him home today, um, and with his family. Yesterday during the investigative process we located *** couple of persons of interest. We interviewed those individuals. And after releasing them and after clearing them of being suspects. They face scrutiny. They face threats. We asked the public to be patient with the investigative process. These individuals were not suspects. They were people of interest. We ask that you do not impose into those those people and that investigative process. They don’t deserve that harassment for being subject to that. I’d like to thank all the investigators that are involved in this. They have worked around the clock all day yesterday through the night last night. Investigators from the State Bureau of Investigations, from county, from city agencies, the university, our federal partners with the FBI, the ATF, um, and many others. After the shooting, we were able to track his movements as he moved to the other side of the building, jumped off of the building, and fled off of the campus and into *** neighborhood. Our investigators have worked through those neighborhoods, contacting anybody they can with doorbell cameras, witnesses, and thoroughly worked through those communities trying to identify any leads. We do have good video footage of this individual. We are not going to release that at this time. We’re working through some technologies and some ways to identify this individual. If we are unsuccessful, we will reach out to you as the media, and we will push that publicly to help us identify them, but we’re confident in our abilities right now and we would like to move forward in *** manner that keeps everyone safe and moves this process appropriately. This morning, I can tell you that we have recovered what we believe is the weapon that was used in yesterday’s shooting. It’s *** high-powered bolt action rifle. That rifle was was recovered in *** wooded area where the shooter had fled. So the FBI laboratory will be analyzing this weapon. You say he was college age, do you believe he was from this university, and how far do you think he may have gone in this time span? So I can’t comment specifically on his face or any details such as that, uh, as it’s continuing to be *** part of the investigation and, and again we’ll release that shortly. Uh, however, um, we’re, we’re doing everything we can to find him, and we’re not sure how far he’s gone. And you do?
