Jane’s Addiction cancels its tour after onstage concert fracas

BOSTON (AP) — The alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction has scuttled its latest tour following an onstage scuffle between lead singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro. Farrell later apologized for “inexcusable behavior.”

“The band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group. As such, they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour,” the band said in a brief statement Monday.

Videos captured Farrell lunging at Navarro at a Friday concert in Boston, bumping Navarro with his shoulder before taking a swing at the guitarist with his right arm. Navarro is seen holding his right arm out to keep Farrell away before Farrell is dragged away by others on stage. The show ended shortly after and the band apologized.

The band is known for edgy, punk-inspired hits “Jane Says,” “Been Caught Stealing” and “Just Because” in the late 1980s and early 1990s as the alternative rock and grunge music movements were growing. It has three top five hits on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.

Farrell, in a statement given to Variety and The New York Times, said, “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show. Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”

Perry’s wife, Etty Lau Farrell, wrote on Instagram the day after the scuffle that her husband’s “”frustration had been mounting, night after night, he felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band.”

She said her husband had been suffering from tinnitus and a sore throat and “by the end of the song, he wasn’t singing, he was screaming just to be heard.” She said her husband later broke down “and cried and cried.”

The band’s “Imminent Redemption” tour — with opening act English rock band Love and Rockets — started in early August and was to end on Oct. 16 at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.

The North American shows marked the first time since 2010 that the original Jane’s Addiction lineup — Farrell, Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery — played an extended run of shows together.

Navarro, Perkins and Avery said in a statement posted Monday on Navarro’s Instagram of Farrell: “We hope that he will find the help he needs.”

UPDATED with Farrell statement: Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Ferrell apologized this morning for a onstage confrontation he initiated with the band’s Dave Navarro in Boston on Friday.

In a statement issued to multiple outlets, Ferrell said, “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show. Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”

PREVIOUSLY at 11:06 a.m.: Jane’s Addiction has canceled the rest of their tour following an on-stage fight between Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro.

A social media post said the band was going to take some time apart following the public brawl.

“To all the fans, The band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group,” read the statement on Instagram. “As such, they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour.”

The statement goes on to note that “refunds for the cancelled dates will be issued at your point of purchase.”

Navarro followed up with a more detailed statement about the band’s decision to take some time off, calling for lead singer Farrell to “find the help he needs.”

“Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour,” read the statement signed by Navarro, Avery and Stephen Perkins. “Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs.”

The statement continued, “We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis. Our hearts are broken.”

The event will take place at Catch One Los Angeles on Friday, Dec. 9, 2022. Tickets go on sale today, Oct. 13 at 10 am PT HERE.

Heaven After Dark returns just as Perry Farrell and Etty Lau Farrell wrap the highly anticipated #SpiritsOnFire tour with Jane’s Addiction, alongside The Smashing Pumpkins. The series focuses on iconic and emerging musicians, performance artists and variety acts to showcase alternative music, the underground culture, all celebrated in one cosmic event. The series previously featured performances from the original and reunited Porno for Pyros, Kind Heaven Orchestra, Starcrawler, and Frankie & The Witch Fingers who performed at the sold-out Belasco Theater Show in July.

This December performers include: Maceo Plex, the Spanish-based producer who will be returning to Los Angeles for the first time since 2021. Maceo Plex is a long-time admirer of Farrell, having taken inspiration for his own name from the Jane’s Addiction song ‘My Cat’s Name is Maceo‘. The two are working on new material, following Maceo’s contribution to Farrell’s 2021 career solo retrospective The Glitz: The Glamour’ box set with a remix of Perry Farrell’s Kind Heaven Orchestra song, ‘Let’s All Pray for this World. German maestro Christian Loffler is returning to Los Angeles for the first time since his sold-out show at 1720 in May of this year. His latest release on Fabric for Mind Against compilation has taken him on a huge step forward as an emerging artist.

There really is a heaven. Everybody is smiling, they’re singing and dancing, and dress fun and free. You don’t need to worry about uniforms in heaven, just wear something that makes it easy to dance,” said Perry Farrell.

The event is being co-promoted by Koncept, the latest venture from Los Angeles-based experiential event companies NXT & INMO, alongside Perry Farrell, Etty Lau Farrell and managers Ian Jenkinson, Michael James and Rob McDermott.
