I'm a Perfume Collector—21 Fragrances That Are Set to Define 2024 for Me

Along with lesser-known fragrance brands (at least to me), there are also some popular brands that I’m still getting to know. Then there are the perfumes that I’ve sampled and loved so much I’m now set on getting a full-size bottle. Lastly, there are some bottles I haven’t yet had the pleasure of smelling. There is a lot to consider for this new fragrance journey! Ahead, you’ll find 21 of the perfumes on my sniff list for 2024. Keep scrolling!

  • This is why I wear beachy perfumes in winter – and why it's so controversial

This is why I wear beachy perfumes in winter – and why it's so controversial

    [ad_1]

Fragrance makes all sorts of emotions bubble up to the surface. I’ve never been impervious to beachy perfumes that smell like warm breezes, foamy sea water and damp, salty skin drying in the sun. They affect my mood at both an emotional and energetic level, which is why I forgo the tenacious spices and woods that many perfumers insist should waft from our wrists in winter.

It’s not as crazy an idea as you might think. When you consider that nostalgia can unravel stress or rekindle positive feelings, your favourite scent is actually a legitimate self-care tool. For me, the memory of pulling off my shoes and sinking my toes into wet, cookie dough-like sand is a salve on days when I’m spinning multiple plates.

Now think about how an aquatic scent, or the smell of sun cream, can rip you from the present back to that beach. It’s as though perfume is a wormhole to other places and hands you a boarding pass to time travel.

“This is because your olfactory bulb is operating at the speed of light,” says Linda Pilkington, perfumer and founder of Ormonde Jayne. “Before you even consciously notice an odour, your brain has beaten you to it; it has received and forwarded the necessary information to the correct regions responsible for emotional processing. When it’s a new scent, your limbic system will ‘cc in the hippocampus to create a scent memory. If it’s a joyous scent, it creates a positive association so whenever you encounter the same smell, you subconsciously remember to feel happy.”

In my case, spritzing on a beachy scent reminds me of linen curtains softly billowing in Naples; that invisible crust of salty water on your limbs after swimming, and lazy, carefree days nursing a sweating gin and tonic with my nose buried in a book.

The best beachy smelling perfumes I have on constant rotation

Like most people who grew up in the ‘90s, my introduction to beachy scents came via Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio. It captured the minimalist mood of the moment and, since then, I’ve built up a fragrance wardrobe that evokes feelings of holiday-like bliss.

Every year I wait with bated breath for Louis Vuitton’s latest collaboration with LA-based artist Alex Israel. So far there have been five West Coast getaways. Of these, my favourites include On The Beach, which has a soothing, hazy quality to it, and reminds me of how it feels to wrap sun-kissed skin in a sandy towel. It never fails to make me feel warm and fuzzy inside (it actually contains sandy notes of thyme, rosemary, pink pepper and clove to keep things hyper real). Another favourite is LV’s California Dream, where fresh citrus and vanilla-tinged benzoin unfurl on your skin to conjure up the crackling heat of an LA sunset over the ocean.

If, like me, you love Ibiza then look no further than Loewe’s ode to the island. Paula’s Ibiza is a mellow affair spiked with coconut water, a seaweed-like note, driftwood and creamy frangipani flowers. Dior Eden-Roc whisks you away to the South of France; its intimate puffs of salt, jasmine, coconut and pine feel like an olfactory secret that only you and the rich and famous share. Meanwhile, Portofino ’97, the first perfume launch by Victoria Beckham, is the latest addition to my collection, teasing fresh sea breezes before warm amber and vetiver roll off your pulse points.

The benefits of wearing a perfume that smells like the sea in winter

Given how amazing these scents smell, it’s no surprise that rather than gravitate towards vanilla for cosy girl season, I still have my warm-weather scents on rotation. Ultimately, though, I reach for beachy perfumes to support my mental health on bleak, grey days.

According to marine biologist Dr Wallace J. Nichols, who coined the term “blue mind”, our heart rate lowers and we fall into a very relaxed, meditative state when we are near bodies of water. Perhaps it’s not too big a stretch to say that smelling an aquatic scent is the next best thing, as it can create a snapshot in your mind of being by water.

“Palm-fringed, deserted beaches with pristine white sand in Kenya inspired our Frangipani scented candle,” Linda notes. “I take the time to let the scent return me onto this coastline and it’s definitely a wonderful antidote to winter months.  I’m wary of ever claiming perfume has the power to improve your health, but I do think scent can play a subtle role in inducing a sense of calm and positivity.”

Or maybe I just like the idea of smelling like a mermaid all year round.

I Tested Dossier's Under-$55 Dupes for Le Labo, Chanel, and More—These Impressed

    [ad_1]

If you’ve been following Who What Wear Beauty for a while now, you already know we lean a tad fiendish when it comes to scent and the art of smelling good. Unfortunately for us and our wallets, however, the majority of our all-time favorite perfumes cost a pretty penny—sometimes upward of $200 and $300. Even though I don’t necessarily mind investing in high-quality scents that I love, affordable price points shouldn’t be reserved for the cheap fares that we spritzed over our layered polos and tanks circa middle school.

That’s exactly where Dossier comes in. It’s an affordable, alternative fragrance line that you might already be familiar with (thanks, TikTok) but prides itself on providing fragrance lovers with “premium-quality, ethical, affordable perfume for all.” And really, the brand is low-key serving us the best of all worlds when it comes to fragrance: transparency, craftsmanship (with every bottle, you’re receiving the highest-quality perfume sourced from Grasse, France), clean formulas (fragrances are vegan, eco-friendly, and cruelty-free), sustainable and green (Dossier even gives returned bottles to charity), and anti-snob access that allows the masses to enjoy more affordable iterations of some of the most loved scents in the business. Brilliant, right?

If You Haven't Found Your “New Year, New Me” Scent, These 16 Are 100% On-Brand

    [ad_1]

It isn’t just me who notices a spike in green tea beauty products every time we kick off the New Year, right? The more I’ve thought about the anomaly, the more I’ve been able to draw connections between the powdered green tea leaves and the high-reaching goals so many of us set for ourselves the second the clock strikes 12 and the Times Square Ball drops. Here’s what I’m thinking—the appearance of matcha in those “new year, new me” social media posts you scroll across for weeks into the New Year is no coincidence.

Matcha and other kinds of green tea provide antioxidants and nutrients to keep you going through your day. Studies show a variety of benefits, including protection of the liver, promotion of heart health, and boosted brain function when consumed thanks to a high level of antioxidants. However, when it’s worn as a fragrance, green tea can help promote calmness and serenity. I’ve scoured the farthest corners of the internet and my fragrance collection to ID the 16 best matcha and green tea scents you should be using well into the New Year.

I Have a Degree in English—These Eight Fragrances Remind Me of My Favorite Reads

    [ad_1]

Before becoming a beauty editor, my background was in English literature (more specifically, novels and essays produced by women through the 19th and 20th centuries). Spending so much time in the company of books provided endless inspiration and intrigue in my daily life, transporting me to places and introducing me to people I never knew I needed before cracking open a cover. Between essays, presentations, and tests, I spent every possible moment in college reading to my heart’s delight. Trust me—I have the horrible eyesight of a classic bibliophile to prove it.

Whenever I get the opportunity, I love drawing connections between some of my favorite literary works and the scents I wear on rotation. Keep reading for a look into my world with eight gorgeous scents to spark your imagination and five must-have home fragrances to help set the ambience before you dive into those pages.

Think You Already Have a Favorite Perfume? I Found 8 That Will Change Your Mind

    [ad_1]

I’m going to let you in on a little-known perfume secret: When a floral perfume smells particularly delectable, it’s likely due to the addition of one note. That note is orange blossom, and when it’s added to fragrances, they morph into something truly delectable.

Orange blossoms are gorgeous white flowers that bloom on orange trees. They’ve been blended into perfumes for centuries and have even been touted as an aphrodisiac. Orange blossoms work so well in perfumes because their scent is so complex—they don’t just smell floral, but they also have notes of citrus, honey, and even greenery. Orange blossom oil (also known as neroli oil) is really potent and a little goes a long way, so perfumers consider it a specialty oil.

You’ll likely find whiffs of orange blossoms in a lot of your favorite perfumes, as they add a certain je ne sais quoi to just about everything they touch. I’ve rounded up my eight recommendations if you’re on the market for an orange-blossom-centric scent—so get ready for the endless compliments to roll in.

  • This Wintry Fragrance Note Can Smell Tacky, But Not in These 9 Scents

This Wintry Fragrance Note Can Smell Tacky, But Not in These 9 Scents

    [ad_1]

Wintry fragrances always run the risk of being a bit too holiday heavy. Too many notes like cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla can make you smell like a cookie exchange rather than a serious person. There’s one note, in particular, that can make you smell like the inside of a snow globe if it’s done wrong: pine.

Pine scents can get a bad rep for being too holiday-centric. It makes sense. When we think of pine trees, we often think of everything they’re associated with. That means Christmas trees, ski lodges, and cloying candles. If pine is done right, however, it can transform a scent into something woodsy, mysterious, and unique.

Below, find the absolute best pine-scented fragrances on the market. Don’t worry—you won’t smell like Buddy the Elf threw up on you. These scents are all refined and subtle and can even be worn outside of the colder months.

  • Tired of smelling like everyone else? These patchouli perfumes will set you apart

Tired of smelling like everyone else? These patchouli perfumes will set you apart

    [ad_1]

In comparison to your regular gourmand and floral scents, patchouli perfumes may not be the most obvious addition to a fragrance wardrobe. But trust me when I tell you that every perfume veteran has a soft spot for patchouli, and for good reason too. Countless fragrance houses have been adding this charming ingredient into their best-selling perfumes since the dawn of time (case in point: Chanel No 5?) to add depth for a more complex profile.

You know that feeling when someone on the street/tube/at a cafe taps you on the shoulder and asks you something along the lines of “oh my god, you smell amazing, what perfume are you wearing?”. I think my fellow fragrance lovers would agree that nothing gives you a bigger confidence boost quite as much as that kind of a compliment from a stranger (totally in a non-creepy way, of course). Well, that’s exactly what you can expect from wearing a patchouli perfume.

For the uninitiated, patchouli is a type of a flower plant that is native to Indonesia. It’s largely used in aromatherapy and perfumery, thanks to its rich earthy, woody and musky tones – all of which are known as firm favourites among fragrance enthusiasts. In fact, patchouli is also considered a libido-boosting aphrodisiac scent, which adds to its addicting nature.

Best patchouli perfumes at a glance:

Le Labo Patchouli 24 eau de parfum

Kayali Vanilla Royale Sugared Patchouli 64 Intense

Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Eau de Parfum

Maison Margiela Replica on a Date eau de toilette

There’s a patchouli perfumes out there for every taste and preference. Whether you tend to gravitate towards sweet fragrances, refreshing florals or citrusy scents, darker oud-y eau de parfums or if you’re a gourmand girlie through and through, patchouli can be found in virtually any fragrance imaginable.

To help you narrow down your pick, we’ve rounded up the very best patchouli scents around, according to the perfume-obsessed GLAMOUR beauty team, who have collectively tested hundreds of fragrances. We made sure to add everything from cult-favourite scents such as the YSL Black Opium, as well as newer launches, including the Maison Margiela Replica On a Date (released just earlier this year). You’ll find affordable gems as well as more premium buys if you’re in the mood to splurge and treat yourself to a new luxe perfume. So sit back, and scroll away…

  • How Régime des Fleurs Reimagined Tuberose With a Brutalist Lens

How Régime des Fleurs Reimagined Tuberose With a Brutalist Lens

    [ad_1]

Minutes into a recent meeting at Régime des Fleurs’ sunlit office in lower Manhattan, founder Alia Raza holds out a white paper blotter to smell. This particular fragrance isn’t hers—an unusual opening gesture during a studio visit—but Raza, who made art films before delving into scent, is setting the scene. “This is a really popular tuberose out right now,” she says, referring to the opulent flower at its heart. We both take a whiff. “To me, that smells like a marshmallow, frosting, cotton candy perfume, with some white floral notes,” she observes, with the dispassionate tone of a field anthropologist. I liken it to a fluffy bra—the kind of marabou-tufted accent that belongs in a boudoir. “All made of feathers,” she nods. What piques Raza’s interest is the yawning gap between confections like this and the natural world. A clutch of fresh tuberose occupies a vase on a nearby desk. “If you go back and you actually smell the flower,” she says, introducing the day’s second olfactory sample, “it has this beautiful, penetrating, medicinal, cool quality.” Akin to green rubber, she ventures, or skin ointment.

It’s an intriguing preamble to Tóor-Tóor, Régime des Fleurs’ unconventional ode to tuberose, created in collaboration with master perfumer Dominique Ropion. “Like me, Alia is a perfectionist, and because she was a filmmaker, her brand is very visual,” Ropion explains via email, highlighting the founder’s multisensory approach. Plus, he adds, “Alia has always had a keenness for tuberose fragrances.” In fact, Raza arrived to their appointment in Paris wearing Carnal Flower, Ropion’s celebrated 2005 fragrance for Frédéric Malle, which centers tuberous and musk. It was a discreet hat tip to the perfumer’s formidable body of work.

Perfumer Dominique Ropion and Régime des Fleurs founder Alia Raza.

    By Pauline Caronton.

Raza, seated at one end of a wraparound work table along the office windows, is modeling the brand’s serene classicism in an ivory knit dress. She traces this obsession with white florals to her childhood in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of Pakistani immigrants. “Probably the first time I smelled a tuberose perfume was on my mom’s vanity or dresser or whatever you call it,” she says. It was Guerlain’s Jardins de Bagatelle, a heady aldehydic scent from 1983. (“Eau de sensation, eau de séduction,” cooed the original French advertisement.) The word tuberose had yet to enter the then 10-year-old’s consciousness, but kindred flowers in the family greenhouse, including jasmine and stephanotis vine, stoked a budding curiosity. At 16, a visit to a Manhattan perfume boutique finally put a name to her infatuation. “I was smelling all these different things,” Raza recalls, “and the owner of the shop told me, ‘Everything that you like is tuberose.’” Robert Piguet relaunched Fracas a few years later—the stuff of fashion-magazine lore and nightclub sillages—beguiling Raza enough to become her signature scent. Carnal Flower took its place in her 20s.

“I definitely had an affinity for his work, without knowing who he was,” Raza says of Ropion, which makes this collaboration feel like kismet. The Paris-based stylist and editor Christopher Niquet also helped shape the creative concept, sharing photographs of Senegalese architecture taken by Romain Laprade. (The series appears in Volume 3 of Niquet’s magazine, Study.) The house of Leopold Sedar Senghor, a poet who served as the country’s first president, was a particular inspiration—its hulking rust-colored facade giving way to quiet interior rooms. “We were like, ‘Well, this is sort of our Brutalist Senegalese home tour,’” says Raza, summing up the evocative backstory for Tóor-Tóor. The name continues the geographic homage, borrowing the Wolof word for flower.

    Régime des Fleurs

    Tóor-Tóor Eau de Parfum

Still, the most intriguing element of this perfume is just how against type it is. Raza might have spent her early years chasing down the greatest hits of tuberose fragrances, but this iteration elides the flower’s reputation as the “symbol of voluptuousness” (as Mandy Aftel notes in her encyclopedic new book, The Museum of Scent, though her aromatic description—“earthy wild mushrooms balanced with creamy lactones”—sounds about right). Even someone who ordinarily avoids white florals is liable to lean in. Such is the case with me: I toted the bottle along to Paris and Palm Springs this fall, discovering how well it melded with urbane opera houses and sunbaked deserts. Ropion’s centerpiece is an Indian tuberose, sourced from the Laboratoire of Monique Remy (“the jeweler of naturals,” he says) and grown in accordance with sustainable practices. “To twist this usually ultra-feminine ingredient, I transposed it next to an explosive and highly masculine trilogy of vetiver extracts,” the perfumer explains. The result is “this mysterious and distorted tuberose.”

This Genius Hack Will Turn Every Perfume Into a Travel-Sized Version

To make your own mini perfume, the first thing you need to do is boil water so that it’s warm enough to liquify the Vaseline (you don’t need it piping hot!). Once the Vaseline is melted, spritz in some of your favorite perfume. Gendler uses four sprays, but you can make it as concentrated as you want. Mix in the fragrance, then pop it in the fridge until the Vaseline is solid again.

Once the Vaseline is solid, you can take it with you anywhere—throw it in your work bag, take it on an airplane, bring it with you on a night out. Perfume also lasts longer on moisturized skin, so this hack might also make your perfumes last longer thanks to Vaseline’s occlusive benefits. Keep reading for the perfumes we’re doing this with first.

Katy Perry: It’s all my favorite things: vanilla, candied citrus—it’s just the yummiest fragrance! So good you can almost taste it.

WWW: Is Devotion a daytime or nighttime scent?

Perry: It’s definitely an all-day fragrance. The citrus notes are light and bright for day, but the vanilla notes make it sexy for night, too.

WWW: What made you want to collaborate with Dolce & Gabbana? And why is this partnership a good fit?

Perry: I remember wearing this leopard print Dolce & Gabbana dress on Warped Tour all the way back in 2008, and I’ve worn them everywhere from the Met Gala to Coachella, to America Idol to my music video for “When I’m Gone.” They feel like a part of my style DNA, and I’ve always loved working with Stefano and Domenico.

WWW: What was your experience working with the brand, and on this campaign?

Perry: I’ve had such a fun experience on this campaign. When you start the relationship with three days on Capri, you can’t go wrong! I got to be on a boat for some of the scenes, and then walked all around the island, getting in some pizza and pasta along the way. It’s also been wonderful being in NYC and seeing my fans who also love Dolce & Gabbana at Macy’s!

  • For Under $40, You Can Smell Like You Just Took the Most Expensive Trip to Rio

For Under $40, You Can Smell Like You Just Took the Most Expensive Trip to Rio

    [ad_1]

Currently, I feel as far away as possible from a vacation. It’s cold outside, and I’ve been spending most days inside my apartment. The seasonal slump that comes mid-winter is real.

One thing that’s always guaranteed to pull me out of the winter blues is spritzing on a good fragrance to enhance my mood. I’m a big believer in using fragrance as a form of self-care, so I like to wear perfume every day, regardless of the circumstance.

Lately, I’ve been dreaming of taking a trip to Rio de Janeiro. Though a physical trip might not be in the cards for me right now, I can travel there in my imagination by misting myself with Sol de Janeiro perfumes. These vacation-inspired sprays are the next best thing to going on a real vacation—they’re tropical, warm, and sweet.

Consider these fragrances your ticket to a sun-kissed escape, regardless of the weather wherever you are. The best part? Most of these sprays clock in at less than $40, so even if you’ll only be wearing them on a Zoom call, you won’t need to feel guilt. (Plus, they wear like expensive perfumes.)

  • A Definitive List of Burberry’s Best Perfumes, According to Everyone

A Definitive List of Burberry’s Best Perfumes, According to Everyone

    [ad_1]

I’m personally a fan of Burberry fragrances because they’re everything I want in a perfume: something that’s timeless but feels fresh. Plus, I’ve loved London ever since I studied abroad there over 10 years ago, so it perfectly suits my Anglophile preferences.

Maybe you’ve never thought about reaching for a perfume bottle from the fashion house, or maybe you’re in the market for a new fragrance. You might already be a fan. No matter the way, I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the most popular scents from the brand. Granted, its fragrance options aren’t super extensive, but there are some classic scents and some twists. Take a look at the standouts, some of which are backed by reviews.

  • I Get So Many Compliments When I Wear This Underrated Perfume Trend

I Get So Many Compliments When I Wear This Underrated Perfume Trend

    [ad_1]

When it comes to the best perfumes for women, body sprays are often overlooked. I don’t know about you, but until recently, whenever I would think about body sprays, I would be taken back to the Victoria’s Secret Bare Vanilla Body Mist that I would layer on as a teenager before heading to school. However, this underrated fragrance category has had a serious upgrade in the past few years, with brands such as Tom Ford and Diptyque creating high-end, luxury body sprays for women that are now front-runners in my perfume collection.

You see, body sprays happen to be a much more affordable way of trying out your favorite brands. For example, a Diptyque perfume may set you back a cool $175, but the brand’s body spray retails for $65. Not only that, but they’re also a lot easier to throw in your handbag, meaning that you can easily top up your fragrance throughout the day.

In fact, body mists are my secret weapon to smelling good all day long, as I can easily give myself a quick spritz without the scent becoming over-bearing or proving to be a very costly price per pump.

  • Don’t miss out: the best beauty advent calendars have dropped – and they’re already selling out

Don’t miss out: the best beauty advent calendars have dropped – and they’re already selling out

    [ad_1]

When do beauty advent calendars go on sale in 2023?

Given we’re already halfway through with October, most – if not all – retailers have already made their advent calendars available ahead of the holiday season. And if there’s anything we’ve learnt in the past few years, it’s that the most popular and luxe options are likely to be sold out within the next few weeks, while others will be gone long before you can even think about unpacking your Christmas decorations.

Are beauty advent calendars worth it?

In short, yes. Most beauty advent calendars offer quite a bit of savings considering the contents that they offer. For instance, the Harvey Nichols beauty advent calendar costs £250 and offers over £1,300 worth of value. And don’t forget that beauty advent calendars are also a great way to broaden your horizons and try new products – meaning when you can get your hands on full-size and travel-size versions of products that you’ve always been dying to try out.

What is the best beauty advent calendar 2023?

“What is the best beauty advent calendar on the market?” or “Which beauty advent calendar is worth the most?” is something that we get asked on a daily basis. In short, it depends on the brands you love and the kinds of products you’re after. This year, the GLAMOUR readers are loving the Sephora Beauty Advent Calendar as well as the Liberty Beauty Advent Calendar, and we’re not in the slightest bit surprised as to why…

What is the most luxurious advent calendar this year?

As far as luxury advent calendars go, we’re basically spoilt for choice. And the good news is that we’ve seen quite a handful of options that are genuinely worth the splurge. This, of course, includes Harvey Nichols, Jo Malone, Harrods, Vogue, Dior, YSL and Pennhaligon’s.

How we selected the best beauty advent calendars of 2023:

For months now, the GLAMOUR beauty desk has been inundated with the hottest new makeup advent calendar launches, placing us in a pretty stellar position to bring you the ultimate edit of reviewed options that are actually worth the splurge. We’ve also personally tested the majority of the included products and used our own expertise to figure out which options are genuinely worth the splurge. Plus, our beauty editors have spent decades testing the biggest beauty launches and consulting industry experts.

Are there any beauty advent calendar deals?

As we’re inching closer to November, it’s likely that quite a handful of beauty advent calendars will go on sale ahead of Black Friday sales. Last year, we’ve seen some of the best options get discounted by up to 50%, so naturally, we expect nothing less in 2023. We’ll keep this page updated on a regular basis to spotlight any beauty advent calendar deals worth shopping.

Which brands have beauty advent calendars?

We’ve already seen a truly impressive line-up of beauty brands that have already dropped their own beauty advent calendars, including the likes of Harvey Nichols, Jo Malone, LookFantastic, Origins, Sisley Paris, Lumene, Kate Somerville, Aveda, House of Fraser, Charlotte Tilbury, 111SKIN, bareMinerals and Dr. Barbara Sturm and many, many more.

People Always Want to Know My Scent—What I’d Buy During Sephora’s Savings Event

    [ad_1]

I’m what you could call a fragrance person. I have upwards of 50 perfumes in my room at any given time, I wear a different perfume every day to match my mood (and my outfit), and a “you smell good” compliment is the highlight of my day. Needless to say, I’ve tried many, many different perfumes. I have scents I keep going back to, and some that I’ve tried once and never touched again.

There’s nothing worse than spending money on a scent and only using it once, so I scrolled through Sephora’s entire fragrance section (yes, the whole thing) to find 10 scents that I would actually buy for myself. In case you didn’t know, Sephora’s biannual Savings Event is starting today, so now is the perfect time to snag a new perfume.

Here are the details of the savings event. Rouge members (who receive 20% off) get access from October 27 to November 6, and both VIB and Insider members get access from October 31 to November 6. VIB members receive 15% off, and Insiders receive 10% off. Use the code TIMETOSAVE at checkout.

  • This Fragrance House Makes Perfumes Using the DNA of Extinct Flowers

This Fragrance House Makes Perfumes Using the DNA of Extinct Flowers

    [ad_1]

Sometimes, I feel like no matter what, it’s really difficult for a fragrance to be truly unique. At the end of the day, a rose is a rose is a rose, after all. There’s only so much you can do to reinvent the wheel when it comes to fragrance—at a certain point, all of the raw ingredients available to you are the same.

That’s why the new Future Society fragrances piqued my interest. In the world of fragrance, they’re truly unique scents, and that’s because the brand is reaching far outside a fragrance’s normal purview. Future Society scents are made using DNA sequences found from extinct flowers.

For founder Jasmina Aganovic, using these extinct DNA sequences is all about using fragrance and biology in tandem with one another to tell a story. “This idea of taking a DNA-sequencing Jurassic Park–type thing with flowers rather than dinosaurs is sort of the origin of this,” she says. “[We] work together with the Harvard Herbarium to gather specimens of flowers that have been preserved and are now known to be extinct.”

These flowers aren’t being resurrected and reintroduced into the world. (Technology isn’t that advanced yet.) Instead, they’re given new life through fragrance. “The DNA is sort of like an instruction manual,” says Aganovic. “It’s sort of like 23andMe. If you’ve ever done 23andMe, you spit into a tube and it sends you all of this interesting information about yourself.”

After gathering information about each flower, Aganovic honed in on anything that gave her clues to how it might have smelled. “That started to give us a direction of the olfactive profile and the scent molecules that were encoded into this flower,” she says. From there, they figured out which scents were likely actually expressed by the flower and wound up with six scents you won’t smell anywhere else—each is a unique reconstruction of an extinct flower.

  • Britney Spears Just Launched Inspiring “Legendary Quote” Merch Line

Britney Spears Just Launched Inspiring “Legendary Quote” Merch Line

As POPSUGAR editors, we independently select and write about stuff we love and think you’ll like too. If you buy a product we have recommended, we may receive affiliate commission, which in turn supports our work.

One day after releasing her memoir, “The Woman in Me,” Britney Spears is giving her fans another gift. The star has released a line of merch called the “Legendary Quote” collection, which features some of her most memorable quotes and lyrics — which means you can grab a shirt that reads “You’d better work, b*tch!” or a hat emblazoned with the quote, “Stronger than yesterday.” Additional designs include a hoodie that reads, “Only while performing was I truly invincible” and a T-shirt reading “Take on the music.” In tandem with the merch launch, Spears is also rereleasing her first ever fragrance, Curious by Britney Spears, which can be purchased along with her book on Amazon. The merch can be purchased on Spears’s website.

Spears’s memoir, which was released on Oct. 24, gave fans an intimate window into her upbringing, rise to fame, romances, and eventual 13-year conservatorship, unveiling disturbing new details about what Spears claims she was subjected to. She also reflected on everything from her natural hair color — which, she revealed in the memoir, is black — to her triumphant collaboration with Elton John, “Hold Me Closer.”

For Spears, the memoir was clearly a chance to finally tell her story after so many years of being controlled by someone else. “It’s time for me not to be someone who other people want,” she writes at the end of the book, making her point clear.
