‘The Burbs’ Director Reacts to Movie’s Keke Palmer-Led Series Remake: “It’s Kind of a One-Off Story”

    [ad_1]

Joe Dante is a bit surprised that his movie The ‘Burbs is getting the series-remake treatment.

Dante recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to promote the Max animated series Gremlins: The Wild Batch returning this week for its second season. Dante directed the 1984 feature Gremlins and its 1990 sequel, and he serves as consulting producer on the prequel show.

The filmmaker also helmed the 1989 dark comedy The ‘Burbs, which starred Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher in the story of a family man who becomes convinced that his new neighbors are hiding a spooky secret. The movie received renewed attention with the news last month that Keke Palmer is set to star in a series version for Peacock from executive producers Brian Grazer and Seth MacFarlane.

Dante took to X (formerly Twitter) at the time of the series announcement with the message, “Call me maybe,” in response to a post about the news.

When asked how he feels about the remake, Dante tells THR with a laugh, “I think my actual comment was, ‘How are they going to make a whole TV series out of that story?’ As opposed to, ‘I want to be the one to do it.’”

He continues, “Good luck to them. It’s kind a one-off story.”

Dante confirms that he has not been contacted by the series’ team about being involved. As for how he feels about his film from 35 years ago spawning a new project, Dante says, “It’s always nice when things have a shelf life.”

During the conversation about Gremlins: The Wild Bunch, Dante also discussed the chances for a third Gremlins movie. “That’s up to the audience,” he said about the possibility of another film. “The fact is that it’s too big a property for somebody not to make something.”

The filmmaker added, “But it’s been difficult for people to wrap their heads around, ‘Exactly how are we going to do this?’ This series is a brilliant answer to that problem because it’s a prequel, and it’s animated, and it’s the perfect next step in the Gremlins saga.”

  • Greendale Community College Is Hopefully Restarting Classes Soon

Greendale Community College Is Hopefully Restarting Classes Soon

    [ad_1]

When will the prophecy be fulfilled? The Community movie hasn’t started filming yet, but Yvette Nicole Brown confirms she’s reprising her role as Shirley Bennett, so surely a movie is happening soon, right?

March 4, 2024: Calling all Greendale human beings for an important announcement: School will be in session soonish. How soon? Leader of the study group Joel McHale told Deadline he’s confident that production for the Community movie will happen after a delay due to the writers and actors strikes last year. “I really do think it’s happening this year, and probably next week. It’s basically working around Donald [Glover]’s schedule.” While McHale hasn’t had a chance to read the script yet, Glover has some idea on what the movie will be about and spilled the beans on his BFF Abed Nadir, played by Danny Pudi. He told The Hollywood Reporter last month, “Yeah, [Dan Harmon] told me what he wanted [for the script], and I was like, ‘This sounds great.’ It’s a college reunion, but Abed is like this big director now, and basically this is his magnum opus. I’m like, ‘This sounds fucking tight.’” Is Abed shooting his masterpiece in Imax? If Britta is still the main investor, the answer is probably yes.

May 10, 2024: Stop saying he’s different! Donald Glover is denying that he’s too busy to get together with his fellow Greendale alums. He told Deadline that the Community movie is definitely still happening (“I swear”), and added that his schedule is not the reason for the holdup. “Everybody’s hating on me on the internet for this,” he said. “Maybe I was last year, maybe, but not this time.” As for a script? Glover hasn’t gotten one yet, but said that he thinks Dan Harmon is working on it. That’s interesting, because Alison Brie said on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live in April that she has read the script, and it’s “so funny.” Care to share with the rest of your class, Annie?

October 3, 2024: Can we please welcome to the study room, Ms. Shirley Bennett! Yvette Nicole Brown spoke with The Wrap, confirming her involvement in the Community movie— you know, that movie that still hasn’t begun filming yet. Sigh!“It’s ‘Community’ script. It’s really funny, it’s very irreverent, it’s silly,” she teased. “A lot of it’s probably going to change. You know, Dan Harmon is always — Dan Harmon and Andrew Guess are our writers, and they’re always thinking and moving and incorporating things… They can now change some things for Shirley’s character as well.” She comforts her fellow human beings that everyone is still on board with the movie; now they’re back to square 1: scheduling issues.

  • The Show Of The Summer: The Love Island USA Effect

The Show Of The Summer: The Love Island USA Effect

    [ad_1]

    For 11 seasons,
Love Island UK has become one of the most popular reality television series to date. The show’s premise is simple: a bunch of single men and women across the UK gather on an island somewhere in Spain and couple up to find love.

However, there are a few twists: every few days bombshells enter the villa to try and disrupt the connection, islanders get sent home by public votes at random, and the final couple left standing has to choose between love and money…splitting $100,000 or dumping their couple and keeping the money all to themselves.

Love Island was such the rage that it became a worldwide franchise…and because so many were streaming the UK version across the US and around the world, they created Love Island in the United States, Australia, and more.

    Sadly,
Love Island USA isn’t as successful as it was when it first launched. Originally set on a rooftop in Las Vegas, many viewers were put off because a rooftop is the furthest thing from a legitimate island. Besides, it lacked conflict and drama, there were no delish worldly accents, Love Island USA was overall lackluster.

Despite a prime spot on Netflix and celebrity host Sarah Hyland, the series was clearly struggling. Then, the show got a facelift.

Love Island USA moved to Peacock, rented a villa in Fiji, poached Ariana Madix from Vanderpump Rules, and dialed up the drama dial to 100. This season was cast perfectly, with a never-ending amount of snarkyness and toxicity, memes galore, and, most importantly: fresh pop culture members to fixate on.

Love Island USA is the most streamed original series in the United States this summer, with over 919.1 million minutes streamed as of the week of July 11. And for good reason.

Who are the Love Island USA Cast Members?

    @blunthousewife I’m starting to believe the theories he’s in it for The Plot #loveislansusa #loveislandusa2024 #loveislandcasaamor #robloveisland #robrausch #robsoveralls ♬ original sound – blunthousewife

This year, viewers were making the bold acclamation that
Love Island USA has got Love Island UK beat this year hands down. Although I was bored of the UK’s lack of any real drama, I finally made the switch after the millionth person asked me if I’ve been watching the US version.

I’d already heard who Rob Rausch was: the latest heartthrob who’s taking the world by storm…while inside the villa he had no idea that he was TikTok’s newest hyperfixation. But Rob wasn’t going viral on his good looks alone…his red flags were even more of a hot topic.

Viewers are obsessed with Rob’s relationship with OG islander Leah Kateb, who hails from Calabasas and looks vaguely like Kylie Jenner. Leah and Rob broke up because Rob wasn’t sexually attracted to her, and thus spawned a season of toxic fights.

Leah Kateb quickly became a fan favorite – partnering up with Miguel Harichi and giving us TikTok sounds to use all summer long. Then, there’s Serena Page,
who won the show alongside Kordell Beckham (yes, brother of NFL legend, Odell Beckham Jr).

    @ashleyvera__ You can tell OBJ is happy for Kordell 🫶🏽 #loveislandusa #loveisland #loveisland2024 #kordellandserena #odellbeckhamjr #nfl #miamidolphins #fypage ♬ original sound – Ashley Vera || VERAfied

Page and Kateb quickly joined up – as friends – with JaNa Craig, who eventually coupled up with Kenny Rodriguez. Then, there’s the tumultuous pairing of Aaron Evans and Kaylor Martin – whose continuous fights kept us entertained until the very end. Runners-up of the show included Nicole Jacky and Kendall Washington.

There were many others along the way, but these are the finalists.

I can get bullied into watching a show quite easily, but I was resistant to taking on another
Love Island franchise. With upwards of 50 episodes in a season, it’s a commitment. You truly spend the summer with the islanders.

But I didn’t wanna be left out. Literally everyone I know was watching it and it’s all over my TikTok. I knew who the islanders really were and what the major drama was before starting in…but that didn’t mean it wasn’t a delicious watch.

It filled all the needs that old reality TV used to: it’s raunchy, vicious, tearful, and nonstop entertainment. There wasn’t a moment when the islanders had a chance to breathe. Every single episode something went wrong, and the world watched.

It became as common as hello to ask if someone has watched
Love Island US this week. If they’re Team Rob and Leah or Team Miguel and Leah.

    @thegr9sarah it WAS giving white woman scared 🥴🥴🥴🥴 #loveisland #loveislandusa #loveisland2024 #realitytv #realitytv #teamleah ♬ original sound – sarah 🙂 🇵🇸

And the ratings matched the hype. Thanks to the islanders who were willing to bare it all, the show was doing blockbuster numbers unseen before. And you feel the need to binge the show, you simply
had to discuss the episodes in real time or else it would be totally spoiled for you on social media.

Leah Kateb was the first islander to reach 1 million followers on Instagram, quickly followed by winner Serena Page. Brands have been flooding the comment section of the girls’ Instagrams to start working with them. Oh and, Rob Rausch was just in Nessa Barrett’s new music video as the love interest.

They’ve appeared on hit podcasts like
The Cancelled Podcast and Call Her Daddy, and they’re quickly solidifying their role as America’s sweethearts. People are even demanding that the network give this season’s islanders their own shows.

What’s refreshing about many of these budding starlets is that they’re willing to reveal their lives in full detail. They’re honest about who they are and what’s going on, so we trust them. Now, we can’t wait to see just what they’ll do next.

    Don’t have Peacock yet?

The Fall Guy didn’t have the time to get audiences to completely fall in love with it in theaters, but nowadays, it’s extremely likely for people to give it a new life on streaming. Coming to Peacock, along with an extended cut, I have a feeling this stunt spectacular film will be a perfect candidate for movie nights to come. Ryan Gosling stars as a semi-retired stuntman pulled back into the fold to work on his ex-girlfriend’s (Emily Blunt) first big director gig without her knowledge, and there’s also a mystery plot bubbling under the surface. With romance, action, and laughs, it’s quite a crowdpleaser. (Streaming August 30.)

  • NBA TV rights go to ESPN, NBC and Amazon as TNT is rejected

NBA TV rights go to ESPN, NBC and Amazon as TNT is rejected

    [ad_1]

The NBA and WNBA have inked deals for where games will be aired and streamed for the next eleven years. The NBA deals run from the 2025-2026 season through the 2035-2036 season. For the WNBA, the agreement covers the 2026 through 2036 seasons.

Pro basketball has been an ESPN mainstay for years and that will continue, with the Disney-owned network remaining the primary media rights owner for both leagues. ESPN will be the exclusive home for the NBA finals for all eleven years of the new deal, as well as five out of the eleven years of the WNBA finals. The games covered by ESPN’s deal will be part of the sports network’s direct-to-consumer platform and a package of NBA and WNBA games will also be made available to stream on Disney+ in select international markets.

While the bulk of the games will go to ESPN, basketball is going to have more of a streaming presence thanks to two new partnerships. NBC and Peacock will have access to 100 NBA national games during each regular season. About 50 games will be exclusive to the Peacock streaming platform, including national Monday night games and doubleheaders. The rest of the games go to Amazon. Prime Video will be the home for 66 regular-season NBA games and 30 regular-season WNBA games each year of the deal.

Regular basketball viewers may notice that TNT Sports is not part of this lineup. The NBA’s deal with that network does not appear to be getting an extension after next year, with those games mostly going to Amazon. But the situation may yet go into overtime. TNT Sports that it matched Amazon’s offer for the games and seems to be challenging whether the NBA can switch partners. NBA’s statement that the offer from parent company Warner Bros. Discovery did not match Amazon’s, leaving them free to shop elsewhere.

The long-awaited agreements for both basketball leagues aren’t a complete slam dunk for fans. On the positive side, the next decade marks a notable shift toward streaming. After so long with the sport closely tied to broadcast shows, having access as part of your existing streaming plans is great. But on the negative side, multiple media partners mean that you’ll have to double- and triple-check where to watch each game. Major League Baseball, for instance, has games scattered across ESPN, Fox, Apple TV+, TNT Sports, and MLB Network on any given night.

  • Let’s Get Ready to Rumble in ‘Those About To Die’

Let’s Get Ready to Rumble in ‘Those About To Die’

    [ad_1]

Ancient Rome has fascinated us and fueled our imaginations for centuries. We have held this mighty empire’s stories in high regard for over a thousand years. Now, we return to it with Peacock’s new epic historical drama, Those About to Die.

The new TV series is Peacock’s answer to recent epic-scale productions like House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, though this is set in a historical world rather than a fantasy one. The series is adapted from the 1958 novel of the same name written by Daniel P. Mannix, a novel which already inspired the Academy Award-winning film, Gladiator. It seems we will be treated to plenty of oiled-up muscular men this year since the sequel to Gladiator is also hitting theatres in the fall.

What’s ‘Those About to Die’ about?

The series will follow the lives of various characters in Ancient Rome, focusing on those who live and die in the newly built Colosseum. We enter the corrupt world of gladiatorial competition, overseen by Emperor Vespasian, played by the award-winning Anthony Hopkins, at the height of Rome’s power and might. In a city where the rich have everything they could ever desire and the masses must be placated, the only thing left to provide is entertainment, and that comes in the form of steel and blood.

Beyond entertainment, the bloody sporting games also present an opportunity for the plebians to rise up and pull the rich and powerful off their pedestals. The recently released trailer gives us a look at the sheer scale of the production, which reportedly has cost the streamer $140 million.

The series is being directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) and Marco Kreuzpaintner (The Collini Case) with the script written by Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan).

When do we head to the Colosseum?

Production was reportedly underway early in 2023, with filming taking place in Rome’s large film studio Cinecittà. The series will release all ten episodes on Peacock on July 18 and will be made available for international audiences on Amazon Prime Video ten days later, on July 28.

    Who will we meet there?

The series is very much an ensemble production and the cast is pretty stacked, especially with Hopkins serving front and center as Emperor Vespasian, a real historical figure. It would seem that Peacock has poached one of Game of Thrones‘ actors to add a little more oomph as Iwan Rheon takes on the role of Tenax.

Joining them is Jojo Macari (Sex Education) as Vespasian’s son Domitian Flavianus, Dimitri Leonidas (The Monuments Men) as famed Roman charioteer Scorpus, Sara Martins-Court (Death in Paradise) as Cala, Gabriella Pession (On the Brink) as Antonia, Moe Hashim (Ted Lasso) as Kwame, and Tom Hughes (The English) as Titus Flavianus, Vespasian’s oldest son. Other cast members include Johannes Johanneson, Rupert Penry-Jones, Emilio Sakraya, David Wurawa, Pepe Barroso, Gonçalo Almeida, Eneko Sagardoy, and Romana Maggiora Vergano.

We really have been spoiled with the sheer scale of the productions we have been receiving lately, and I am totally here for epic battles, scary beasts, sordid sex scenes, and plotting and machinations. Let the games begin!

  • A New ‘The Office’ Series Is Officially in Development at Peacock

A New ‘The Office’ Series Is Officially in Development at Peacock

    [ad_1]

Peacock recently announced an exciting new series from The Office TV show developer Greg Daniels, raising questions about whether the iconic show is returning.

The Office, based on the BBC series of the same name, is a mockumentary following the daily lives of employees of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. Largely satirical in nature, the show provides an interesting look into the humorous and sometimes absurd ways employees cope with being stuck in the 9 – 5 office lifestyle. Meanwhile, its short episodes, clever humor, and phenomenal performances made it a particularly addictive and bingeworthy series. The Office ultimately ran for nine seasons and achieved high critical acclaim during its run.

For many viewers, it’s hard to believe that The Office actually ended over a decade ago. It has remained a highly-streamed series, and its popularity has carried on to younger generations, making it seem as if the show only ended a short time ago. Given The Office‘s enduring legacy, many original fans of the series have been curious about whether the franchise will continue. Over the years, several spinoffs and a reboot have been proposed, but none of them ever went anywhere. However, that changed when Peacock announced it had picked up a new The Office series.

    Is The Office returning?

The Office itself isn’t coming back, but its universe is. Those hoping for a spinoff focused on characters from The Office may be disappointed as the new series isn’t quite a spinoff nor a reboot. Instead, the series will exist in the same universe as the original series but will focus on a completely new cast of characters and company. Essentially, the documentary crew that followed Dunder Mifflin’s employees’ daily lives decides to find another subject for a documentary. Soon, the crew settles on a “dying historic Midwestern newspaper” that a devoted publisher and volunteers are trying desperately to save.

The series is co-created by Daniels and Nathan For You producer Michael Koman. Peacock has confirmed that Domhall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore will lead the cast. However, as of now, there’s no indication any of the original The Office stars will be returning for the show. Still, given that the documentary crew is the same, one can expect there to be references to The Office, and the setting makes it possible for potential returns.

It can’t be denied the setting is quite interesting, as the newspaper industry and the increasing loss of local newspapers certainly could use some commentary and viewing from a satirical lens. Although The Office itself isn’t returning, the new series has the potential to stand on its own with some minor support from its tie-in to the original show.

The Miniature Wife Starring Elizabeth Banks & Matthew Macfadyen Ordered by Peacock

    [ad_1]

Peacock announced on Monday that it has placed a straight-to-series order on a new romantic drama comedy starring Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfadyen.

The series, called The Miniature Wife, will star Banks and Macfadyen as two spouses who will “battle each other for supremacy after a technological accident induces the ultimate relationship crisis.”

The Miniature Wife is based on a short story written by Manual Gonzalez, and is described as a “high-concept martial dramedy” that will examine the power imbalances between a couple.

Banks and Macfadyen have a long history of high-profile projects

The series was created by Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner (Boardwalk Empire, Goliath), who will also serve as showrunners and executive producers for the series.

Currently, no other casting information has been made available. Banks is best known for her acting work on hit films like Pitch Perfect and The Hunger Games franchise, but has also dabbled in directing, having helmed 2015’s Pitch Perfect 2 and 2023’s Cocaine Bear.

Macfadyen is best known for his run on the hit HBO drama series Succession as Tom Wambsgans, but has also starred in a ton of high-profile projects, including 2005’s Pride & Prejudice. Up next for Macfadyen will be a role in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

New on Netflix: K-drama goes surreal in ‘Chicken Nugget’; a twisty Hindi-language mystery, and more

    [ad_1]

    Premieres Wednesday, March 13:

Bandidos — A bunch of deep-diving opportunists try to retrieve a centuries-old treasure from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico — before a competing party can get to it first. Damn, that Jason Momoa is really hard up these days. (Netflix)

Little Wing — A New Yorker article by Susan Orlean becomes a dramatic feature about a 13-year-old who hopes to bring her family back to solvency by rising to the top of the lucrative sport of … pigeon racing. If the kid is smart, she’ll keep her money on the DL when Orlean is around. Because nobody’s forgotten that shit she and Chris Cooper tried to pull with the orchids. (Paramount+)

    Premieres Thursday, March 14:

24 Hours With Gaspar — A private detective decides to spend his last day of life taking part in a jewelry heist in this crime drama, which netted nine nominations at the 2023 Indonesian Film Festival. It won Best Adapted Screenplay, a category it got shunted into when somebody realized “Gaspar” is Indonesian for “Ken.” (Netflix)

Apples Never Fall — In an adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s 2021 novel, the children of two retired tennis coaches have to consider some disquieting possibilities after the mom (Annette Bening) goes missing. At least nobody has to trawl the rivers, since we’ve all seen how that bish can swim. (Peacock)

Art of Love — A Turkish Interpol officer develops an even deeper distaste for the art thief she’s been pursuing when she learns he’s a guy she used to bang. And thus begins a desperate game of cat and mouse — if that’s what you call it when the cat gave the mouse herpes. (Netflix)

From Dreams to Tragedy: The Fire That Shook Brazilian Football — A three-episode docuseries takes stock of the catastrophic 2019 blaze that claimed 10 lives at the Flamengo football club’s training center in Rio de Janeiro. Wait a minute: Somebody finally found a way to make soccer interesting, and we’re supposed to cry about it? (Netflix)

Girls5Eva — The series moves to Netflix for Season 3, in which the ladies hit the concert trail to promote their comeback album — despite having no itinerary, tour manager or booked venues. What I’m hearing here is that they’re on a major label. (Netflix)

The Girls on the Bus — The writings of New York Times reporter Amy Chozick are adapted into a scripted series that follows female journalists on the presidential campaign trail. Your heart will swell with pride as they prove they can draw false equivalencies and normalize fascism as well as any man. (Max)

Invincible — As the second half of Season 2 commences, Mark and Oliver are searching for a way to get back to Earth so they can stop the Viltrum Empire from subjugating the entire planet. Given that the distance is millions of miles and time is of the essence, I’m gonna say SunRail is out. (Prime Video)

Justice, USA — Male, female and juvenile inmates are featured in a two-part exposé of the Nashville prison system. You can tell which ones have been locked up the longest, because they can be heard asking the guards why they don’t get Johnny Cash concerts anymore. (Max)

Red Ollero: Mabuhay Is a Lie — Captured in concert during an August 2023 three-night stand at the Teatrino Promenade in San Juan, the Filipino comic sets out to dispel some of the biggest misconceptions about Pinoy culture. Well, for one thing, Imelda Marcos did not invent Crocs. (Netflix)

    Premieres Friday, March 15:

The Bloody Hundredth — A documentary profile of the brave men of the 100th Bomb Group arrives just in time to promote the final episode of the like-themed drama series Masters of the Air. Gosh, it’s so inspiring when corporate synergy gives us a window to honor the fallen. (Apple TV+)

Chicken Nugget — K-drama takes a turn for the surreal as a woman gets turned into a chicken nugget, sending her father scrambling to find a way to restore her. But is this really a big deal? I know people who are essentially 87 percent cheese fries. (Netflix)

Irish Wish — After trying her darndest to suppress a crush on her best friend’s fiancé, Lindsay Lohan wakes up one morning to find they’ve traded places. (I mean she’s traded places with her friend, not with the fiancé. But now that I’ve said it out loud, isn’t that the movie you’d rather be watching?) (Netflix)

Iron Reign — The life of a Barcelona drug lord gets significantly more complicated after his family business receives a problematic product shipment. It’s amazing the hot water you can get into when you order a kilo of blow off Amazon and they send you six cases of Gold Bond instead. (Netflix)

Manhunt — A seven-part limited series dramatizes the nearly two-week search for John Wilkes Booth that played out while the nation was still reeling from the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Given that Booth was an actor, did anybody think of looking in the break room at Applebee’s? (Apple TV+)

Murder Mubarak — A firmament of Bollywood stars plays the suspects in a twisty Hindi-language mystery that shows an “unconventional cop” trying to find the killer amid a group of outwardly normal folk. It’s a tough case to crack, mostly because he doesn’t speak Hindi. (Netflix)

The Outreau Case: A French Nightmare — A Gallic version of The Crucible played out 20 years ago, when the accusations of four French children got their parents and other adult authority figures convicted of sexual abuse. As this docuseries shows, the public erupted in outrage when the charges proved to be as bogus as gas-station escargot. On the bright side, we finally canceled Pepé Le Pew. (Netflix)

The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy — Eugene schleps all over Europe in Season 2, on a quest to explore some of the continent’s most intriguing locales. First up: The credit union where the Romanians hide all that money they’ve been withholding from NATO. (Apple TV+)

    Premieres Monday, March 18:

Stormy — The notorious Stormy Daniels goes before the documentary cameras to reveal the real woman behind the sex scandal that failed to bring down a president but sent two lawyers to prison. Or as Ken Jennings would call it, “a solid consolation prize.” (Peacock)

    Premieres Tuesday, March 19:

Brian Simpson: Live From the Mothership — Not only is this the first stand-up special for Austin-based comic Simpson, it’s the first by anybody to be recorded at Joe Rogan’s Comedy Mothership. You really want to be funny in that environment, you stop your set right before the first punchline and demand that everybody produce their vax card. (Netflix)

Dinner Party Diaries With José Andrés — The internationally renowned chef opens up his kitchen to swap stories and recipes with guests Jamie Lee Curtis, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Bryan Cranston. “Hey Bryan, why is that béarnaise sauce so blue?” (Prime Video)

Forever Queens Season 2 — With their comeback single a hit, the titular quartet of middle-aged Mexican performers suddenly find themselves down two members and scrambling to hire replacements. In a shocking turn of events, the first right of refusal goes to anybody from BTS who isn’t currently in the army. (Netflix)

Yes, There Are Two Three-Body Problem Adaptations

    [ad_1]

A still from 3 Body Problem.
    Photo: Netflix

You don’t have to wait to see Liu Cixin’s sci-fi novel The Three-Body Problem turned into TV. Does that mean Netflix is moving up the release date of 3 Body Problem, its upcoming adaptation from Alexander Woo and the creators of Game of Thrones? Nope, that’s still scheduled for March 21. But if you’re okay with overcoming that one-inch barrier of subtitles, another version is actually already available. Three-Body, a Chinese adaptation from Tencent, aired in China last year. As of publication time, it remains available to stream on Rakuten Viki and Prime Video. And per The Hollywood Reporter, Peacock has now acquired the rights to Three-Body for a February 10 drop, just in time for Lunar New Year. NBCUniversal isn’t hiding the fact that the timing is tied to its rival streamer. A press release states, “With all the buzz surrounding Netflix’s English adaptation, we’re excited about the opportunity for sci-fi and Chinese drama fans to watch the Chinese-language original (with English subtitles) ahead of the Hollywood adaptation.”

Naturally, these two adaptations have their differences — for example, Tencent used 30 episodes to cover the contents of the book, while Netflix will use just 8 episodes. While that seems to suggest that it won’t be as faithful to the plot, there’s at least one aspect you can expect to see more of in Netflix’s take. Derek Tsang, who directed the first two episodes, previously told THR that 3 Body Problem incorporates parts of the book that were set in the Cultural Revolution. Tencent’s version, in contrast, has faced criticism for not showing as much of that real-life period of upheaval and eliminating plot points involving the Red Guard. Which Problem will fans prefer? We bet Netflix and Peacock are both excited for the answer.
