  • The NFL Season Is Over and Everything Is Worse Now; So, Here Are Some Alternatives – Philadelphia Sports Nation

The NFL season is over, and everything is worse now. We just saw the Seattle Seahawks soundly defeat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 60, meaning the Eagles’ title of defending champions is over.

We now enter the dark day,s also known as the offseason.

    Football-less weekends are upon us.

How you spend these next few months is up to you, but here’s where I’m starting.

    Coaching Staff

    Credit: Philadelphia Eagles-Facebook

Prep for the next Eagles season. There’s been a lot of upheaval in the Eagles staff, particularly on the offensive side. Let’s familiarize ourselves with them. New Offensive Coordinator Sean Mannion, Passing Coordinator Josh Grizzard, and Offensive Line Coach Chris Kuper have joined the Eagles staff for 2026. They seem like promising young hires, which is the cliche way of saying we know very little about how they’ll actually perform.

We do know that Jordan Love has played well under Mannion, Baker has become the franchise guy in Tampa under Grizzard, and the Vikings’ rushing game was surprisingly competent despite the revolving door of starter quarterbacks. I’ll also be looking at players who may join or leave the team next year.

    A.J. Brown

Brings us to crazy trade scenarios. Is AJ Brown actually going to force a trade out of Philadelphia? Personally, I want to keep AJ despite his antics from the last two years. Most reports show Brown’s value around a second-round pick, which doesn’t justify it to me. Sure, a second-round pick could be any caliber of player; it could even be an AJ Brown-type player. Then again, Howie has shown he’d rather pull the plug early than late.

    Maxx Crosby

Is Howie going to pull a masterclass and try to get Maxx Crosby? While I would love to see a player like him added to the team, I think it only really happens if the Raiders are desperate to move him.

He has a massive contract signed last year, and the Eagles need more help on the offensive line than on the defensive line. They’ll likely try to build through the draft.

    2026 NFL Draft

Speaking of, you can also start prepping for the draft. My early draft prep is to take an o-line or player from either the college playoffs or the SEC. I think the biggest difference for the Eagles from 2024 to 2025 was their running game.

Hand up, I’m not much of a college football fan, so specifics will come later as we get closer to the draft. I do know that we can’t judge their past season of play until we see how well they exercise before the draft. More to come later, but we have our last idea.

    Landon Dickerson

Doom scroll about the team. Not recommended, and actually, I’m going to try to talk you down on the big ones. Landon Dickerson might retire due to a knee injury that has reportedly plagued his 2025 season and was an issue when he was first drafted. It may surprise you, but I’m not secretly a doctor with a great knowledge of players’ knees.

As a sports watcher, I can say we’ve seen a lot of players with leg injuries heal faster and return to 100% as of late. There are ACLs like Jayson Tatum or even Joel Embiid who got knee surgery and have been playing like they did when they won the MVP.

    Lane Johnson

Lane Johnson also underwent surgery, and as the Eagles’ longest-tenured player (assuming Brandon Graham re-retires), there are questions about his future. I don’t actually expect him to retire unless his healing goes worse than expected.

What I do expect is that this is his last year, so the Eagles better take one of those guys I haven’t researched yet.

    Vic Fangio

Vic Fangio also flirted with retirement but has told the team he’d remain for at least another year. While this would be bad for obvious reasons, there’s always the chance that these were just rumors and a return to winning would cure his issues. There’s also our old pal Jim Schwartz, who is taking a year off from football after not being picked as the Browns’ head coach.

Would he be willing to take another defensive coordinator position? Who knows, but I can tell you he’d get more national coverage with the Eagles than the Browns.

Those are a few things I’ll be doing.

I’ll also be writing for all you fine readers.

  • ‘We’re back again’: Bellingham father and daughter haven’t missed a Patriots Super Bowl

A father and daughter from Bellingham, Massachusetts, have been to every New England Patriots Super Bowl, and they are back this year – with a third generation in tow.

The Murray family duo has not missed a Super Bowl that New England has been in, including the six they won in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017, and 2019.

John Murray started this tradition when his daughter, Shayna, was a kid.

“I’ve been a season ticket holder since 1971,” he explained to NBC10 Boston. “In 1986 we made the Super Bowl, she was 7 years old.”

This Super Bowl will be the 12th for Shayna and John Murray, and they have a new team member with them — now almost 7-year-old Savanna.

“Last time we played in Atlanta I was pregnant with my daughter and everyone kept asking, ‘are you going to bring yours to the next one? And we said we are going to have to if it happens. And it hasn’t happened until now,” Shayna shared.

“We didn’t know if we would ever be going to get back and now Drake Maye has come along and this is wonderful. Such a great feeling. We are back again,” John added.

Savanna, who is almost 7, is glad to be a part of this family tradition: “I honestly love them and I am so excited to be here.”

As the Murray’s tradition continues, they have another generation of memories.

“We have made so many memories over the years,” Shayna said.

“It’s so exciting. I am having a blast with them and I just love them,” Savanna added. “I love Drake Maye.”

Shayna was almost the same age as her daughter when she saw her first Super Bowl, but that ended with a loss to the Bears. The Murray’s hope Savanna starts a different tradition on Sunday, with a win over the Seahawks.

New England and Seattle will face off in Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8. The game will air on NBC10 Boston and Peacock.

  • Sam Darnold Has Overcome Doubters, Drake Maye Has Lived Up To Hype. Only One Will Win Super Bowl 60 – KXL

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Nobody on the Seattle Seahawks has supported Sam Darnold quite like Ernest Jones IV.

When Darnold threw four interceptions against the Los Angeles Rams in a 21-19 loss in Week 11, Jones had his quarterback’s back. The second-team All-Pro linebacker wouldn’t allow Darnold to take the blame.

“Sam’s been balling,” Jones said after that game. “If we want to try and define Sam by this game, man, Sam’s had us in every game. So, for him to sit there and say, ‘Yo, that’s my fault,’ no, it’s not. There were plays defensively we could have made plays, or opportunities where we could have got stops.

“This is football. He’s our quarterback and we’ve got his back.”

Darnold rewarded his teammate’s faith. He led the Seahawks back from a 16-point, fourth-quarter deficit to an overtime win against Los Angeles in the next meeting and was sensational in Seattle’s 31-27 victory over the Rams in the NFC championship game.

“Like I said, doubt Sam if you want to, Sam’s gonna show you every time,” Jones said afterward. “That’s who we know, and that’s why I stood on that, and I’ll do it all over again.”

Darnold has earned plenty of trust in the locker room in his first season in Seattle after a breakout year in Minnesota. Once considered a bust after the Jets drafted him No. 3 overall in 2018, Darnold — on his fifth team in eight seasons — is one victory away from leading Seattle to the franchise’s second Lombardi Trophy.

Darnold and the Seahawks face Drake Maye and the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl on Sunday in a rematch from a matchup 11 years ago.

Tom Brady and the Patriots won that one, 28-24, after Russell Wilson’s pass from the 1-yard line in the final minute was intercepted by Malcolm Butler.

That gave Brady, coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots the fourth of their sixth Super Bowl rings before the dynasty ended.

First-year Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, a standout linebacker on three of those championship teams, has quickly turned a team that was coming off consecutive 4-13 seasons into a winner.

Maye has been the catalyst for New England’s impressive turnaround.

“From Day 1, I feel like the guys have really taken what Coach Vrabel has wanted to do with us and have just really applied it to their lives in every single way,” Maye said.

“Whether it’s on the field, off the field, getting treatment, doing little things, making great decisions off the field. I think the biggest thing is just — Coach Vrabel always says he treats us how we treat the team. I think that’s how guys have taken this year, and I think it’s just rallying together and wanting to play for each other. From there on, we just have had fun doing it every single day since, and it’s been a ride. Looking forward to trying to finish it off.”

Brady also was a second-year quarterback when he led the Patriots to their first Super Bowl title in the 2001 season.

They were double-digit underdogs when they beat the Rams. The Pats were favorites in their next eight Super Bowl appearances until now. New England is a 4 1/2-point underdog this time around.

The 23-year old Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 draft, will be the second-youngest quarterback to start a Super Bowl. Ben Roethlisberger was the youngest to win one when he led Pittsburgh to a victory over Seattle in the 2005 season.

Maye has demonstrated plenty of poise in clutch situations. He changed a play and ran a bootleg to extend the drive on third down late in the AFC championship game against Denver to seal a 10-7 victory in the snow.

“I think just as we’ve gone through this entire year in this program, and the more that he’s been out there and the games have kind of built up on us that, really, we’ve done a nice job in those situations,” Vrabel said of Maye’s maturity in big moments. “I think he’s improved in them, and he’s a big part of why we’re here, obviously.”

Of course, both teams are far more than just their quarterbacks.

Darnold has All-Pro wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, running back Kenneth Walker and Seattle’s defense is the stingiest in the league. The Seahawks allowed the fewest points in the NFL and have standout players at every level. Defensive tackle Leonard Williams, linebacker Jones and cornerback Devon Witherspoon were second-team All-Pros. Safety Nick Emmanwori had a standout rookie season.

Maye has running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Rhamondre Stevenson, wide receiver Stefon Diggs and the defense has been dominant in the playoffs.

Only one team will leave Santa Clara, California, with the Lombardi Trophy.

  • Super Bowl 60 and Your Rooting Guide as an Eagles Fan – Philadelphia Sports Nation

    Eagles

Yeah it’s the Seahawks, duh, that’s it, thanks for reading. Nah we’ll go through some of the quantitive reasons why you, as an Eagles fan, should be rooting for a fellow bird team. Spoiler but yes, one of those is the high-level analysis that they are also a bird team.

First, the Patriots already have plenty of nice things. Six Super Bowl wins, one of the most dominant dynasties in all of sports, and a city that also wins plenty without the football team. Spread the wealth a little comrade. You might be tempted by fans who will try and guilt-trip you about how Belicheck was snubbed from the Hall of Fame. Also as of this morning Robert Kraft has also been denied entry. Same deal regardless. They sure were, but that’s no reason to punish Seattle. Seattle has their own story they are chasing redemption on.

It’s a great revenge story for the Seahawks. These two teams have met in the Super Bowl before. If you don’t know, the game ended with interception by Malcom Butler in Super Bowl 49. One of the most iconic endings to a football game let alone the biggest game of the year. Is it as cool as a back up QB getting a receiving touchdown on 4th and goal of the Super Bowl? No. Am I biased? Yes, look where you’re reading this, but this is about the Seahawks and their quarterback also has a lot to prove.

Sam Darnold has potential to be one of the best comeback stories. He’s the first player drafted by the Jets to start in a Super Bowl since Joe Namath in 1969. You read that year right, over 55 years since a QB for the Jets started in the Super Bowl. Sorry Jets fan but it’s important context. Darnold also has an unfortunate history of playing the Patriots. During his 2019 season he had the infamous quote during a bad game in Metlife Stadium where he was, “seeing ghosts,” due to the constant pressure from the New England defense. He was followed around by this quote until it eventually had him being passed around like rolls on Thanksgiving.

Sam Darnold spent three years on the Jets before going to the Carolina Panthers for two, and then one year with the San Francisco 49ers and the Vikings. Teams in the league began to count him out despite getting the Vikings to a 13-4 record last year. Biggest thought on Darnold was that he didn’t have “it” to win when it matters. He now sits at the doorstep of the most important award in his position, Super Bowl Champion. With a win, Sam Darnold can put the critics and ghosts to rest with one more game.

Fellow bird team. There’s six total bird teams in the NFL, Falcons, Cardinals, Ravens, Seahawks and the Eagles. Am I really telling you that you should root for a team because that team is the same species as ours? Absolutely. Makes as much sense as being a die hard fan of a team due to geographical birth location. That’s the beauty of sports though, take one small similarity and fight tooth and nail for it. Sure there’s no such thing as a “Seahawk,” but who cares, a bird is a bird regardless of mythical status.

Sure there are plenty of other reasons to root for the Seahawks or even just hatred of the Patriots is valid. At the end of the day, not sure how any Eagles fans can earnestly root for the Patriots. They honestly sold merch comparing themselves to the Empire in Star Wars. So if you’re not a football fan but are a Star Wars fan, another point for the Seahawks. These are just my thoughts as a random Eagles fan but let me know your reasons for the Seahawks. Regardless, it’s always go birds!

  • Patriots are heading to their 12th Super Bowl, seeking an NFL-record 7th victory

Drake Maye, Mike Vrabel and a stifling defense have the New England Patriots back in the Super Bowl for the first time since Tom Brady and Bill Belichick won their sixth ring together seven years ago.

The Patriots (17-3) beat the Denver Broncos 10-7 on Sunday in the AFC championship game to advance to their 12th Super Bowl.

They’ll face the winner of the NFC championship game between the Los Angeles Rams (14-5) and Seattle Seahawks (15-3).

Either way, it’ll be a rematch.

Brady led the Patriots to a 20-17 victory over the heavily favored “Greatest Show on Turf” St. Louis Rams on Feb. 3, 2002, for the franchise’s first Super Bowl title.

And the Patriots also defeated Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams 13-3 on Feb. 3, 2019, to capture the franchise’s sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy.

New England edged Pete Carroll’s Seahawks 28-24 on Feb. 1, 2015, when Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson’s pass from the 1-yard line.

Maye scored on a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter after a critical turnover by Jarrett Stidham, who made his fifth career start filling in for injured Broncos quarterback Bo Nix.

“The Pats are back, baby,” Maye said. “Now, gotta win one.”

Playing through a snowstorm in the second half, Maye only threw for 86 yards and ran for 65. Stidham had 133 yards passing and one TD, one interception and one costly fumble.

The 23-year-old Maye, a finalist for AP NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year, will become the second-youngest QB to start a Super Bowl behind Dan Marino. He’s the fourth second-year QB in the past seven years to lead his team to the NFL title game. Patrick Mahomes (2018) won it while Joe Burrow (2021) and Brock Purdy (2023) lost.

Vrabel, who won three Super Bowls as a linebacker for the Patriots in the 2000s, turned the team around in his first season as coach. New England went from 4-13 last year under Jerod Mayo to 14-3.

Vrabel is trying to become the first person to win a Super Bowl as a head coach and player for the same team. Tom Flores, Mike Ditka, Tony Dungy and Doug Pederson won Super Bowls playing for one team and coaching another.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am to be associated with these guys and this organization,” said Vrabel, who is a finalist for AP NFL Coach of the Year. “I won’t win it. It’ll be the players that’ll win the game, I promise you. It won’t be me that’ll win it and I promise you I’ll do everything that I can and our staff to have them ready for the game.”

No team has played in the Super Bowl more than the Patriots, who are 6-5. They’re tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most wins.

It’s been a long road back to the top for New England, which came off consecutive four-win seasons and only had one winning season after Brady’s departure in 2020.

    Series record: Broncos lead 31-24.

Last meeting: Patriots won 26-23 in Denver on Dec. 24, 2023.

Broncos offense: overall (10), rush (16), pass (11), scoring (14).

Broncos defense: overall (2), rush (2), pass (7), scoring (3).

Turnover differential: Patriots plus-3; Broncos plus-1.

    Patriots players to watch

Drake Maye. The MVP finalist had three touchdown passes in the Patriots’ divisional round win over Houston. It marked the 13th time in team history that a quarterback had thrown at least three TD passes in a playoff game. It was also the most since Tom Brady had three in Super Bowl 52 against Philadelphia.

    Broncos players to watch

Jarrett Stidham. Bo Nix’s backup hasn’t thrown a pass in two seasons and the only snap he played this season came on a kneel-down at the end of a blowout over the Dallas Cowboys. Stidham has appeared in 20 games with four starts in his six-year NFL career and the Patriots tried to sign him last spring before he re-signed with Denver for $12 million over two years.

    Key matchup

Maye versus Denver’s defense. The Broncos led the league with a franchise-record 68 sacks this season and sacked Josh Allen three times. They also forced Allen to turn the ball over four times after he had gone six straight playoff games without a turnover. Allen had two fumbles and two interceptions, including one in overtime. In the playoffs, Maye has been sacked 10 times, thrown two interceptions and fumbled six times, losing three of them.

    Key injuries

Patriots: LB Harold Landry III (knee) has been ruled out. CB Carlton Davis (concussion protocol) and LB Marte Mapu (hip) are both questionable. … WR Mack Hollins, who has been on injured reserve since Dec. 27 with an abdomen injury, was activated on Saturday. He played in the first 15 games of the season prior to going on IR, catching 46 passes for 550 yards and two touchdowns.

Broncos: RB J.K. Dobbins, who returned to practice this week for the first time since foot surgery in mid-November, was ruled out. … WRs Troy Franklin (hamstring) and Pat Bryant (concussion) both participated in practice this week. Center Luke Wattenberg was activated off injured reserve. He went on IR with a shoulder injury last month. He took the roster spot of Nix (ankle surgery), who went on IR on Saturday, ending his season. The Broncos also promoted WRs Michael Bandy and Elijah Moore from their practice squad.

    Series notes

The Broncos have a 4-1 edge in the playoff matchups between the teams, winning all four games in Denver. The two most recent meetings were in the AFC championship games during the 2013 and 2015 seasons, and were both won by the Broncos. Denver’s 20-18 win in the 2015 AFC title game on Jan. 24, 2016, was the final meeting between quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

    Stats and stuff

This will be the Patriots’ 13th appearance in the AFC title game in the past 25 seasons. … The Patriots (Mike Vrabel) and San Francisco 49ers (George Seifert 1989, won the Super Bowl) are the only teams in the Super Bowl era to go undefeated on the road with a new head coach. … Vrabel is attempting to become the eighth coach in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl in his first season with a team. … Maye has completed 3 of 10 deep passes (20 or more yards) through his first two playoff games. The Broncos didn’t allow Buffalo’s Josh Allen a completion and intercepted him twice on nine deep pass attempts in the divisional round. … With a win, Maye would become the first quarterback to win three playoff games against top-five defenses in the same postseason: the Chargers entered the playoffs ranked fifth, the Texans ranked first, and the Broncos ranked second. … Maye has been strip-sacked 11 times this season, including the playoffs. The Patriots have recovered six of Maye’s fumbles on sacks, with three recoveries by LT Will Campbell. The only other quarterbacks strip-sacked 10 or more times since 2020 are Matt Ryan (11 in 2022), Derek Carr (10 in 2021) and Kirk Cousins (10 in 2021). … Maye is one of three quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era with five or more turnovers and 10 or more sacks. He joins Russell Wilson (2014, lost in the Super Bowl) and Roger Staubach (1973, lost in the NFC championship game). … WR Stefon Diggs has played in 16 postseason games and has 75 receptions for 965 yards and five touchdowns. He needs 35 yards to become the 18th NFL player to reach 1,000, and the third Patriots player. Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski are the only Patriots players to eclipse the mark. … Diggs has played in the most postseason games among all Patriots players with 16. CB Carlton Davis III is second with 11 postseason games. … LB K’Lavon Chaisson has three sacks this postseason. With another he’ll joint Willie McGinest (five in 2003 and 4 1/2 in 2005) and Garin Veris (four in 1985) as the only Patriots with at least four in a single postseason. … The Broncos are 18-5 all time in home playoff games since their first one in 1977 during the “Orange Crush” era. … This is Denver’s 11th appearance in the AFC championship game. … Stidham is 1-3 in his four NFL starts with his only victory coming against the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 31, 2023. … K Wil Lutz made all four of his field-goal attempts and all three of his extra points against Buffalo last week. His four field goals are one shy of the franchise playoff record of five set by Brandon McManus in the playoffs following the 2015 season. … Last week OLB Nik Bonitto became the third player in Broncos history to force two fumbles in a playoff game. By stripping the ball from Josh Allen twice, Bonitto joined Von Miller (against Carolina in Super Bowl 50) and Tom Jackson (against Dallas in Super Bowl 12). … ILB Alex Singleton’s 14 tackles last week, including 11 solo, were the most by a Denver defender in a playoff game this century. … DE Malcolm Roach is coming off a big game against Buffalo. He had 1 1/2 sacks and recovered a fumble.

  • Eagles’ Most Iconic Playoff Wins: Moments to Remember – Philadelphia Sports Nation

Since the creation of the NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles, one fact that their fans are quite familiar with is the emotion that surrounds their support.

    Credit: Bruce Emmerling-Pixabay

Especially with the playoffs, which are usually filled with heartbreak, loyalty, and belief. However, they have come out on top in some victories that will be etched in the minds of every Eagles fan and will be continually remembered.

In today’s world of sport, brands are also leveraging this emotional investment. We have seen how global brands — including the best crypto casinos — are sponsoring teams, broadcast partnerships, and fan engagement campaigns. This move adds another layer to how fans interact with the sport.

So, what are these moments that fans have set aside as “religious” dates for the Philadelphia Eagles? What playoff wins have validated that the city and fans breathe football?

This post will look at some endearing moments to remember and why it means to wear green.

4 Iconic Eagles’ Playoff Moments That Would Never Be Forgotten

Here are some of the top moments etched in the hearts of every Eagles fan:

    1) 1960 NFL Championship: Ending Lombardi’s Reign

Before the Super Bowl became the thing, the Eagles stunned the football world by clinching their most historic win in a match against the Green Bay Packers in the 1960 NFL Championship game. Led by the legendary Buck Shaw, the team went up against the power-packed Packers, who were dominating the league at the time.

However, with a combination of a great strategy, a strong defense, and a lethal attack led by Ted Dean, they were able to seal a late victory by a score of 17-13. And that was the first NFL title that the team won.

    2) 1980 NFC Championship: Knocking Off Dallas

In 1980, the Philadelphia Eagles decided it was time to decorate their trophy room, and what better way to do that than against their bitter rivals, the Dallas Cowboys. In the 1980 NFC Championship game that ended 20-7, the Eagles went on to ease to victory.

This win means so much more because it was against the Cowboys, who had dominated the NFC throughout the 1970s. And it was an added bonus because they were able to prevent the team from reaching another Super Bowl final.

    3) 2003 Divisional Round: “4th and 26”

Every hardcore Eagles fan would always remember the historic “4th and 26th” game that set a precedent for the team. In the 2003 NFC Divisional round, the Eagles had to claw out a win against the Green Bay Packers in the brutal cold. A match that most already tipped in the opponents’ favor, the Eagles were visibly behind in the fourth quarter.

Then they faced fourth-and-26 from their 25-yard line before the magic happened when Donovan McNabb found Freddie Mitchell on a crossing route for 28 yards. This helped them win in overtime with a score line of 20-17.

As NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Ray Didinger put it:

“He will always be remembered for the 4th-and-26. A lot of better players came to Philadelphia and played for the Eagles, and won’t be remembered as vividly as Freddie Mitchell will be remembered for that one play.”

    4) Super Bowl LII: The Ultimate Victory

The final topping on the cake came at Super Bowl LII, and cemented the result as the greatest win in Eagles’ history. As the underdogs in a match against the Patriots, who had names like Tom Brady and Bill Belichick on their roster, they even expected them to lose.

However, in a shock of the decade, Nick Foles decided to drop an A-class performance that saw him get three touchdowns and throw for 373 yards. He even went on to catch a touchdown on the famous Philly Special. And this helped the Eagles earn their first-ever Super Bowl title in over 50 years.

As Doug Pederson, Eagles’ coach said after the Super Bowl victory:

“We just needed the perfect time and look, and we found it.”

    Why These Wins Still Matter

For the average football lover, these victories might not be that important, but for the Eagles, it’s a game for the record books.

These games shaped generations of fans who have built their identities around the team and have been there through the highs and lows.

Now every future playoff is measured against these games and serves as a booster for the average fan’s expectations.

  • Vrabel says 4 players dealing with illness ahead of Sunday’s Pats-Chargers game

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel spoke Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers, saying several players are currently dealing with illness.

While praising offensive lineman Morgan Moses for everything he’s brought to the team this year, Vrabel mentioned that Moses is one of several players dealing with illness, along with center Garret Bradbury, offensive lineman Verderian Lowe and linebacker Anfernee Jennings. Vrabel did not say whether the illness could impact the availability of those players on Sunday.

Sunday’s matchup between the No. 2-seeded Patriots and the No. 7 Chargers will kick off at 8 p.m. on NBC10 Boston and Peacock.

The Patriots have undergone a remarkable turnaround in 2025 behind first-year head coach Vrabel and star quarterback Drake Maye, an MVP contender in just his second NFL season. After going 4-13 in 2024, New England finished 2025 at 14-3, winning 13 of its last 14 games to earn the AFC East title.

Herbert and the Chargers, meanwhile, went 11-6 for the second straight season under head coach Jim Harbaugh. They were still in the mix for the AFC West crown entering Week 17, but they fell to the Houston Texans at home and rested Herbert for their Week 18 road game against the Denver Broncos.

Both quarterbacks will be looking for their first playoff win on Sunday.

When Vrabel last addressed the media on Monday, made the case for why he thinks Maye should be the NFL MVP and praised the Chargers.

He did a bit of both again Wednesday, saying the Chargers are “a big, physical football team” that doesn’t beat themselves and are statistically excellent in every category. And he called Herbert “one of the best quarterbacks in the league.”

He also said Maye has shown “a lot of growth” this season, learning from his mistakes. “That’s been really good to see.”

Vrabel also heaped praise on Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson, who was just named AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

“I’m always excited for our players, and I sound like a broken record, but I think he continued to do things we needed him to do to help us win. He was rewarded for it with touchdowns, rushing yards… but he also protected the quarterback.”

Sunday’s win over the Miami Dolphins to close out the regular season came after a tumultuous week for the Patriots during which news broke that wide receiver Stefon Diggs and defensive lineman Christian Barmore were facing criminal charges stemming from separate domestic incidents last year.

At least for now, it doesn’t appear that either player will face disciplinary action from the NFL, although the league said it is investigating.

Carson Wentz arrived in Philadelphia with big expectations, giving the Eagles fans hope.

Unfortunately, then came the injuries and setbacks that stole the momentum.

It’s a story that feels more human than headline-glamour, and Philly still has mixed feelings.

    The Promising Rise

Drafted as the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz showed promise. But it was in 2017 that things really kicked into gear, and by the time he got hurt near season’s end, he’d thrown for 3,296 yards with 33 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions in just 13 games. His passer rating was 101.9 in that stretch. He also rushed for 299 yards that season.

That stretch had everyone talking. He had the kind of spark that made fans believe he could be special. And when you look at what defines the greats, like steady leadership and the ability to make a team feel, it’s easy to see why some thought Wentz might join top NFL quarterbacks of all time. For a brief stretch, he looked like he was heading straight there.

    …And Then The Fall

One play in Los Angeles changed everything. An awkward step, an ACL tear, and suddenly his season was done. Nick Foles took over. They won the Super Bowl, and Wentz had to watch the celebration from the sideline.

Injuries have followed him ever since. Back, knee, head. All at different times. He played only 11 games in 2018, and the numbers were fine, but the rhythm was gone, as was the explosiveness.

In 2019, he posted more than 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns, but still, it simply wasn’t the same as he was pressing. By 2020, the confidence had cracked. The throws that once looked automatic were suddenly forced or late.

He bounced from Philadelphia to Indianapolis to Washington. Each stop brought the same story: flashes of talent, followed by inconsistency.

NFL executives started using a brutal word – “broken.”

They said he looked fine in practice, but when the games started, everything had to be perfect around him. If it wasn’t, his mechanics unraveled. He’d freeze up, double-clutch, miss the open read. He wasn’t the same athlete anymore, either, with the pocket becoming a cage.

    The Verdict

By late 2023, the league had made up its mind, and analysts compared his situation to Sam Bradford, who was talented, got paid well, but was out of the league before 35.

And yet, people who’ve worked with him still like him. They describe him as earnest, coachable, and even kind. He tried to fix things, tried to make it work. But sometimes, football doesn’t give you another shot.

    Why It Unraveled

The physical damage was part of it. But the mental toll might’ve been worse. Wentz never seemed to fully trust his body again. That led to hesitation. Hesitation led to mistakes. And mistakes, in the NFL, cost you your job.

The Eagles moved on. The Colts moved on. Washington did too.

More recently (2025), he signed with the Minnesota Vikings, seeing action after younger QBs were injured and revealing that he’s now more of a stopgap option than a long-term franchise leader.

Why Philly Fans Still Feel Something

If you’re a Philadelphia fan, you saw Wentz do something rare. He gave hope and made big throws. He helped the team earn an 11-2 record in games he started in that 2017 run, then got hurt, and the team won the Super Bowl with the backup. A lot of complicated feelings: gratitude, frustration… and sadness for what might have been.

The human side matters. Wentz wasn’t perfect; he made bad throws and had games where he struggled. But he also overcame injuries, came back, and tried to lead. Loved his team. The “could’ve-been” element resonates.

Ideally, What Could He Have Been?

Had Wentz stayed healthy, kept improving, and maybe adapted his game, he might have joined the ranks of the top-tier quarterbacks – those are QBs who remain elite 8-10 years, evolve when defenses evolve, maintain leadership.

The missing piece in Wentz’s story is the “sustained” part. One season isn’t enough. Injuries interrupted the rhythm. Changes in team staff, receivers, and the offensive line all added turbulence.

    The Takeaway

So here’s what I came away with: Wentz achieved a level that gave hope. But he didn’t stay there. That doesn’t mean he failed. He still had a good career, made plays, and was a starting QB for many years. But he didn’t reach the “special” level that the very best QBs show.

And for Philly fans, it’s okay to feel both pride and disappointment. He gave you the thrill of imagining a franchise quarterback. You bought into that. Then reality hit. And life moved on.

In a world where so many QBs never even get close to what Wentz did in 2017, his story is one of both promise and caution. A reminder that in the NFL, being very good isn’t enough if you want to be legendary. Being durable, being consistent, being the guy on the late-night drives in January, that’s where the legends live. Wentz almost got there. He had that moment. But he didn’t live there.

And maybe that’s okay. Because sometimes the most human quarterback stories aren’t about records or Hall-of-Fame résumés. They’re about the rise, the fall, the “what if,” and how fans remember it.

Wentz gave Philadelphia something to believe in. For a while, that was enough.

  • 5 Best Full Backs to Play for the Philadelphia Eagles – Philadelphia Sports Nation

This blog contains links from which we may earn a commission.Credit: Dave Adamson/Unsplash

Traditionally, the fullback played as a blocker, clearing the way for running backs or quarterbacks. The athletes who played the position tended to be large, physical, intimidating players, and while they would also be used to collect some passes, their primary role in the team was to block.

More recently, the position has fallen out of favor.

Only a single fullback was even picked in this year’s draft, although some teams are starting to transition existing players into quasi-fullbacks – running backs who can also block.

    The Eagles

Having won last year’s Super Bowl, the Eagles are once again among the favourites to lift the trophy this year, having been given odds of +700 to do so. The event remains one of the most significant betting events of the calendar and is not only popular in the US but overseas, with bettors using secure offshore wagering accounts to find the best odds and bet on their NFL favourites.

According to sports betting expert Steven Brown, the NFL, in general, is one of the most popular sports for betting in the US.

The Eagles will prove popular once again this year, and one of the reasons some neutrals will be rooting for them is because they are effectively reintegrating the fullback position – a position that has become somewhat nostalgic.

    1) Keith Byars

Byars was the tenth overall pick in the 1986 NFL Draft, when he was picked up by the Eagles. He had enjoyed an excellent college career, although his senior year was blighted by a foot injury, which reoccurred when Byars tried rushing back before the injury had fully healed. He was a multifunctional player, slotting in as running back and right end as well as fullback, and he was known for excellent running, efficient pass catching, and, critically for the fullback role, his blocking skills. He is considered by many to be the best fullback the Eagles have ever had

Byars remained with the Eagles until 1993, when he joined the Miami Dolphins. He would also go on to play for the New England Patriots and the New York Jets and was widely regarded at all the clubs he played for. He retired from playing in 1998, losing his final game with the New York Jets, when they were beaten by the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.

    2) Kevin Turner

    PHOTO: Dave Adamson/Unsplash

Two years after Byars left the Eagles, Kevin Turner took his place in the fullback role. Turner had excelled as a blocker with the Alabama Crimson Tide college team, and, as a result, he was picked in the third round of the 1992 draft by the New England Patriots. He played three seasons for New England before he moved to the Eagles and played five seasons. Turner finished his career in 1999 after suffering two neck injuries.

He won the Ed Block Courage Award for having played through previous injuries. Following his retirement, Turner led a lawsuit against the NFL regarding concussions in the sport. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2016 – his passing was later attributed to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, caused by repeated head injuries.

    3) Jon Ritchie

Jon Ritchie was widely considered one of the best high school fullbacks in the country. Despite being courted by Penn State, he opted to play college football for Michigan. After transferring to Stanford, he was initially deployed as a linebacker but eventually transitioned back to fullback.

In 1998, he was picked by the Oakland Raiders in the third round of the draft and spent five seasons there before joining the Eagles in 2003. After two years playing fullback for Philadelphia, Ritchie retired from playing and took up a role commentating in Philly.

    4) Leonard Weaver

Leonard Tony Weaver III had a relatively short career and only saw a single season with the Eagles, but that one season was a glowing one. Having played a linebacker and H-back for Carson-Newman College, Weaver signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2005. Here, he converted to the fullback position and signed a one-year extension in 2008.

After the 2008 season, he left the Seahawks and joined the Eagles as an unrestricted free agent. He was widely considered the best fullback in the league by the end of the 2009 season, but was injured in his first carry of the 2010 season, ultimately being forced to retire in 2011.

    5) Ben VanSumeren

Although the fullback position has largely fallen out of favor, one player who wants to see it resurrected is Ben VanSumeren. VanSumeren was recruited to play fullback for Michigan at college, but soon converted to the running back position and then linebacker. He was picked up by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2023.

He signed a one-year contract extension in 2025, and when talking about playing fullback again, he said:

“It’s something I did growing up, and it is something I did in college as well, and so there has never been a time when I felt I had to knock the rust off.”

    Leicester City’s Premier League Miracle // 2015/16

    PHOTO: Richard/Unsplash

Perhaps the greatest underdog story in modern football, Leicester City entered the 2015/16 Premier League season at 5000/1 to win the title.

Managed by Claudio Ranieri and powered by Jamie Vardy’s fairytale rise from non-league football, the Foxes defied logic, toppling giants like Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea to lift the trophy. Their improbable run remains the gold standard of sporting miracles.

Buster Douglas Stuns Mike Tyson // 1990

Mike Tyson was the most feared man in boxing—undefeated, ruthless, and seemingly untouchable. Enter James “Buster” Douglas, a 42/1 outsider few gave a chance.

In Tokyo, Douglas not only stood toe-to-toe with Tyson but floored him in the tenth round, producing one of the biggest shocks in sporting history and redefining what was possible in the ring.

    Greece Win Euro // 2004

International football has seen its fair share of surprises, but Greece’s triumph at Euro 2004 stands alone—beating Portugal in their own backyard and reducing a fresh-faced Cristiano Ronaldo to tears.

Otto Rehhagel’s side entered the tournament as outsiders, yet their discipline and resilience carried them past giants like France, the Czech Republic, and hosts Portugal. It was a masterclass that stunned the continent.

The Miracle at Medinah // 2012

During the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah, the European team staged an improbable comeback against the dominant U.S. squad, who led 10-6 after the first two days.

Needing a stunning finish, Europe won 14½–13½, completing one of golf’s greatest team upsets in history.

New York Giants Win Super Bowl XLII // 2007

The New York Giants entered Super Bowl XLII as clear underdogs against the undefeated New England Patriots.

Thanks to a clutch drive capped by David Tyree’s “helmet catch,” the Giants won 17-14, ending the Patriots’ perfect season bid and delivering one of the greatest shocks in NFL history.

Danny Willett Wins the Masters // 2016

English golfer Danny Willett entered the 2016 Masters at 125/1 pre-tournament. Amid a collapse by the favourite Jordan Spieth on the back nine, Willett stayed composed to win his first major, proving that patience and focus can defy enormous odds.

From Leicester City’s miraculous season to the Miracle at Medinah and from Greece’s Euros win to the Giants stunning the Patriots and Tom Brady, underdog stories remind us why sport is so compelling.

They inspire, surprise, and show that with heart and determination, the impossible really can become possible.

  • Why Tanner McKee Should Be QB2 for the Eagles – Philadelphia Sports Nation

Why Tanner McKee Should Be QB2 for the Eagles – Philadelphia Sports Nation

The Eagles have had two exciting preseason wins so far. This was largely due to the play of second-year quarterback Tanner McKee, who has looked stellar so far through training camp and the preseason games.
Nick Sirianni is standing firm on Kenny Pickett being QB2, but Tanner McKee has proven it should be him.

McKee looks much better as a passer than Pickett does.

In his most recent outing against the Patriots, McKee threw 19 passes and completed 15 for 140 yards.

It is evident when you watch the games that Kenny Pickett isn’t any good. Against the Patriots, he had 11 completions for 67 yards. He’s already had two full seasons as a starter under his belt, and as Steelers fans will tell you, he was awful out there.

He is a first-round pick who has proven he isn’t a good QB in the league, but McKee, on the other hand, is a 6th round pick who hasn’t gotten a chance to prove himself.

Even if McKee isn’t that good, he’s a better option than Pickett.

Tanner McKee looks like a solid passer when he’s on the field, especially since he’s throwing to wide receivers who probably won’t be on the roster. He is someone who could come in and win a few games if Jalen Hurts goes down, which he usually does at some point during the season.

There were even people who thought McKee should have been QB2 last season, ahead of Marcus Mariota. McKee finished his college career at Stanford with 5336 passing yards and 28 touchdowns in two seasons as a starter. He was definitely a solid passer in college, and that could translate to the NFL.

Jalen Hurts has missed games during every season since he’s been a starter. If he goes down this season, the Eagles cannot put Kenny Pickett out there.
Philadelphia will have a much better chance to win if they put Tanner Mckee in the game, which is why he should be QB2.

  • Patriots punter spends offseason taking a swing at Mass. amateur golf championship

Patriots punter spends offseason taking a swing at Mass. amateur golf championship

When he’s not on the football field, Bryce Baringer spends his time on the golf course. This year, the Patriots punter won the 2024 Massachusetts Amateur Qualifier securing his place in the championship, which will take place on July 8.

This is not the first time he’s attempted to make the cut.

“I tried qualifying a few times back when I was at home living in Michigan and never made it through,” said Baringer, in an interview with Patriots.com.

But after continued support from family, friends and teammates he finally qualified for the championship.

Baringer shares his love for golf with his father, Bruce, who showed him the sport at a young age. Growing up, he said his interest in golf and football grew in tandem.

“He was pumped for me, and obviously it’s cool for us because I know how important golf is to him. Just to be able to make him proud, not just on the football field, but in a sport he so deeply cares about was cool for me,” said Baringer.

The punter ultimately decided to pursue football and attended Michigan State until he was drafted to the Patriots in 2023.

He even said that golf helps him prepare for the football season.

“Golf is still important to me. I relate golf to football and football to golf so much,” he said.

The 2024 Massachusetts Amateur Golf Championship began on July 8 at the Framingham Country Club.
