  • Column: Should Gov. JB Pritzker’s boycott suggestion stop Chicago Cubs fans from watching Marquee?

Should Chicago Cubs fans stop watching Marquee Sports Network in the final week of their first playoff season in five years?

Should Bears fans tune out their “Monday Night Football” game against the Washington Commanders on Oct. 13 on ABC-7 and ESPN?

Gov. JB Pritzker seems to think so.

The Democrat from Illinois urged citizens to boycott several networks after Disney-owned ABC suspended “The Jimmy Kimmel Show” over jokes Kimmel made about President Donald Trump. The suspension came following moves by Nexstar Media Group Inc. and Sinclair Broadcasting to preempt or suspend the late-night talk show on their affiliates, and after pressure from the FCC to take action against Kimmel.

Pritzker called it a “free speech” issue that should alarm every American, saying “we only have one other thing to do, which is public action, people actually speaking up, speaking out, boycotting, showing up and protesting, and their representatives who agree with them doing the very same.”

Pritzker made the statement on MSNBC’s “The Briefing with Jen Psaki,” and his press office later released a statement adding Nexstar and Sinclair to the list.

“An attack on the First Amendment of this magnitude is a five-alarm fire and we should all be treating it as such,” the statement read. “What’s clear here is that Nexstar and Sinclair are capitulating to the president so he approves their mergers. Everything should be on the table.”

Free speech is certainly something to fight for, and Pritzker is right about the urgency of preserving our constitutional rights to say whatever we please without fear of reprisal. Speak up, speak out and protest, for sure. Cancel the Disney+ and Hulu streaming apps, forget about going on that Disney cruise or making a trip to Disney World or Disneyland.

But I can’t imagine viewers would stop watching their favorite teams and sports over Kimmel’s plight, so perhaps we need to come up with another solution.

It’s easy for Pritzker to ask citizens to boycott Disney-owned ABC/ESPN over the Kimmel controversy, and his concern over FCC interference on behalf of President Trump’s fragile ego is justified.

Boycott “Dancing with the Stars?” No problem. Give up “Good Morning, America,” which has turned into an infomercial for Hulu, Disney and ESPN shows? Easy enough.

But boycott the Alabama-Georgia game Sept. 27 or the rematch of the Bears-Commanders “Hail Mary” game in October?

Will football fans tune out big games to support free speech?

As a longtime viewer of ABC and ESPN who loves and hates Disney’s networks, I’d have a difficult time saying goodbye to all the sports telecasts I enjoy watching.

Maybe Pritzker, who attended Duke and Northwestern, is not a college football fan. Who knows?

But we do know Pritzker is a Cubs fan. He mentioned it a few times during his Aug. 1 speech at Wrigley Field when the Cubs made their 2027 All-Star Game announcement.

“I’m grateful to the Cubs organization and to the Ricketts family, who have made spectacular upgrades to the ballpark and the neighborhood while preserving all that makes it special,” he said. “As governor I’m very proud to have worked with the general assembly to provide security enhancements, to bolster public safety around the park, and I’m also a proud Cubs fan, so that made it especially easy.”

After waiting for applause, Pritzker added: “And I guess here is where I am supposed to say ‘And I love the teams that people in Illinois across the state love.’ But I’m a Cubs fan.”

While Pritzker didn’t specifically mention the Cubs this week in his call for action, he assuredly knows Sinclair is the corporate co-owner of Marquee Sports, along with the Cubs.

Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts talks about the Marquee Sports Network during the opening ceremony of the Cubs Convention on Jan. 18, 2020, at the Sheraton Grand in Chicago.

Sinclair owns the Diamond Sports Group, which owns 50% of Marquee. The Rickettses own the other half.

Marquee launched in 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and televises every Cubs game that’s not part of a national broadcast. Some years there’s been little reason to watch, but this year was the exception, with the Cubs earning a National League wild-card spot, led by young stars such as Pete Crow-Armstrong and Cade Horton.

Cubs fans pay a significant monthly fee to watch them on a DTC app or a streamer or cable provider such as Comcast, which charges $20.25 per month for regional sports. Comcast announced in July that it would move Marquee into the “ultimate tier” of pricing after this season, meaning it will be an extra $20 per month starting in October.

Editorial: That was a lousy bit, Jimmy Kimmel. But there’s no role here for government intervention.

No matter where they stand on Kimmel or the “free speech” issue, many Cubs fans will be canceling Marquee anyway once the regular season ends Sept. 28. The network won’t broadcast any of the team’s postseason games, so there’s no need to have it. They’ll save a few hundred dollars by canceling it for five or six months and starting up again when the 2026 season begins in March. It’s no different than NFL fans canceling Amazon Prime in January and renewing it in September when the next season of “Thursday Night Football” begins.

Canceling Marquee means they’ll miss Cubs reruns, betting shows, Bears postgame shows, Ian Happ’s podcast and some other sports broadcasts. But Marquee is primarily a seasonal network that depends on Cubs games for viewers. The rest is just filler.

While Sinclair wants to punish Kimmel for jokes it found objectionable and even demanded an apology from him, it should be noted that Marquee knows a little about censorship. In its third season in 2022, Marquee stopped the taping of a sports talk show called “The Reporters” when one of the panelists was slightly critical of Cubs President Jed Hoyer.

In a discussion on the Cubs, WSCR-AM 670 morning host David Haugh said Hoyer “lacked” transparency and asked if he was “tethered to reality.” ESPN-1000 personality Peggy Kusinski agreed with Haugh and called for more “honesty” from the Cubs brass. The show’s producer abruptly stopped the taping, claiming they had some kind of technical difficulty.

  • Prince Harry UNDER FIRE After He’s Announced As Recipient Of Award Honoring US War Hero Pat Tillman! – Perez Hilton

Prince Harry UNDER FIRE After He’s Announced As Recipient Of Award Honoring US War Hero Pat Tillman! – Perez Hilton

Prince Harry is set to receive a big award next month, but one fan in particular is NOT happy about it — and that’s the mother of US hero and former NFL player Pat Tillman, for whom the award is named. Pat was a NFL safety who enlisted in the Army after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, by the way.

Here’s the deal. The Duke of Sussex was chosen to receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2024 ESPYs for his work making the world a better place through the Invictus Games and military service in Afghanistan. On the honor, the 39-year-old said per the New York Post:

“This one is for our entire service community.”

    Unfortunately, not everyone agrees!

Pat’s own mother Mary Tillman is now “shocked” and dismayed by the selection, telling DailyMail.com on Saturday:

“I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award.”

    She argued:

“There are recipients that are far more fitting. There are individuals working in the veteran community that are doing tremendous things to assist veterans.”

And Harry’s not?? The Invictus Games is a multi-sport, Paralympic-styled competition for wounded or injured servicemen and women, both those serving and veterans. It seems to be shining a bright spotlight on the veteran community. Just saying!

But, regardless of what she thinks of his Invictus Games, Mary complained that the Spare author is already famous and therefore the attention the award provides him will do little to help him gain more support for his missions. Meanwhile, a lesser-known recipient may have benefited from the brighter spotlight. That’s fair. But, TBH, many awards go to people who are already well-established… Just think of the Oscars, etc. They’re picking among the best of the best, you know?

But Mary’s not alone in feeling frustrated over this selection. ESPN analyst Pat McAfee complained on his talk show:

“It’s going to Prince Harry, who I don’t even think is a Prince anymore, right? He said don’t call me that? See, why does the ESPYs do this s**t? … This is like actually the most embarrassing thing I’ve seen in my entire life.”

    Yeesh!

The backlash has gotten so bad that there’s even a Change.org petition with more than 15,000 signatures as of this writing. Whoa! See HERE. In support of the cause, people argued:

“Pat Tillman sacrificed his life for duty and country! Harry walked away from duty and country & spit on his commander in chief, country, duty & family on his way out. All for a Hollywood dream! I’m appalled as an American that you would give him this award. It now means nothing!”

“There are others far more deserving. This is a slap in the face.”

However, there were some supporters online, writing on X (Twitter):

“People who are reacting poorly to this (those who don’t just hate him for the sin of protecting his wife and kids from the UK establishment) need to watch Heart of Invictus on Netflix. You’ll understand all that he’s done for veterans, including in the US.”

    “Well deserved Prince Harry. Bravo”

The award ceremony will be held on July 11. Harry hasn’t reacted to the controversy yet.

What do YOU think about this, Perezcious readers? Is he deserving of the honor or not? Sound OFF (below)!

  • Aaron Rodgers returns to ‘Pat McAfee Show’ 1 day after being axed by host – National | Globalnews.ca

Aaron Rodgers returns to ‘Pat McAfee Show’ 1 day after being axed by host – National | Globalnews.ca

    Well, that didn’t take long.

Approximately 24 hours after announcing Aaron Rodgers would not appear on The Pat McAfee Show for the rest of the season, ESPN’s McAfee took an abrupt u-turn Thursday and welcomed the New York Jets quarterback back as a guest.

    Story continues below advertisement

On Wednesday, McAfee announced that his show was parting ways with Rodgers for the remainder of the season, in the wake of the football star saying some pretty controversial things about Jimmy Kimmel on the show recently.

“So ‘Aaron Rodgers Tuesday,’ Season 4, is done,” McAfee told his audience on Wednesday. “There could be a lot of people that are happy with that. Myself included, to be honest with you. The way it ended, it got real loud.”

“I am happy that he’s not going to be in my mentions going forward, which is great news,” the host added.

Looks like McAfee will likely have to deal with more of said mentions, however, as people across X (formerly Twitter) appeared to be either delighted or horrified with the footballer’s quick return to the broadcast.

    Story continues below advertisement

Watchers of the show were taken aback by the about-face, but it might not be that surprising given McAfee’s wording in his initial announcement — he said that “Aaron Rodgers Tuesday” was ending, but the quarterback returned on a Thursday. Also, McAfee pledged that Rodgers would no longer appear during the regular season, and the NFL is technically entering postseason territory.

Also, McAfee tweeted Wednesday night that he hoped Rodgers would still come on his show to discuss “big events.”

And Rodgers did return to discuss the bombshell announcement that Bill Belichick is stepping down as coach of the New England Patriots after 24 seasons.

McAfee introduced Rodgers’ appearance by announcing him as “the last human that Bill Belichick talked to on the field as the New England Patriots’ head coach,” referencing the Jets’ final game of their disappointing season last week when they defeated the Patriots 17-3.

This time, however, his appearance was brief and Rodgers didn’t go off on any tirades about Jimmy Kimmel, Jeffrey Epstein or delve into debunked COVID-19 conspiracy theories.

    The Rodgers/Kimmel feud

Rodgers, 40, sparked a firestorm of fury last week after he suggested on McAfee’s show that Kimmel’s name will eventually surface on the list of Epstein’s associates.

    Story continues below advertisement

Rodgers said there are many people, “including Jimmy Kimmel,” who do not want the contact list belonging to Epstein to be publicly released.

“I’ll tell you what, if that list comes out, I’ll definitely will be popping some sort of bottle,” added Rodgers, who appeared to be sitting inside a wine cellar.

A furious Kimmel responded shortly after, taking to X to re-share the clip and deny he’s ever met the late financier and convicted sex offender. He also threatened to take legal action against Rodgers.

“Your reckless words put my family in danger. Keep it up and we will debate the facts further in court.”

    Story continues below advertisement

Kimmel, 56, also laced into the New York Jets player during his Monday night monologue on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

“Either he actually believes my name was going to be on Epstein’s list — which is insane — or the more likely scenario is he doesn’t actually believe that and he just said it because he’s mad at me for making fun of his top knot and his lies about being vaccinated,” Kimmel said in his lengthy rant, where he also called Rodgers “hamster-brained” and joked the two ‘A’s’ on his report card were “both in the name Aaron.”

“It might be time to revisit that concussion profile, Aaron,” Kimmel said.

    Story continues below advertisement

While McAfee issued an apology to Kimmel last week, Rodgers stopped short of doing so during Tuesday’s appearance on McAfee’s show and doubled down on COVID conspiracy theories.

“I said that a lot of people, and I’m quoting myself here, ‘a lot of people — including Jimmy Kimmel — are really hoping that [list] doesn’t come out,’ end quotes, that’s what I said,” Rodgers told McAfee.

“I was referring to the fact that if there is a list — which, again, this hasn’t come out yet, this was just a deposition — and there are names on it, then that would be the second time that a soft brain, junior college student, you know, wacko anti-vax, antisemite, purveyor, spreading misinformation, conspiracy theorists, MAGA — whatever other things have been said by him and other people in the media — would be right twice.”

    Story continues below advertisement

“Any type of name calling is ridiculous and I’m not calling him (a pedophile), and neither should you,” Rodgers continued.

Even after that, he said he didn’t care what Kimmel said about him, “but as long as he understands what I actually said and that I’m not accusing him of being on a list … I’m all for moving forward.”

  • Aaron Rodgers Eviscerates Woke ESPN After He's Banned For Suggesting Jimmy Kimmel Had Ties To Epstein

Aaron Rodgers Eviscerates Woke ESPN After He's Banned For Suggesting Jimmy Kimmel Had Ties To Epstein

    Opinion

Source: The Pat McAfee Show YouTube

The New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is slamming woke ESPN after being banned from “The Pat McAfee Show” for the rest of the NFL season for suggesting that Jimmy Kimmel had ties to the late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

    Rodgers Slams ESPN

Fox News reported that Kimmel threatened to sue Rodgers after he linked the liberal late night host to Epstein while appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show” last week.

“There’s a lot of people, including Jimmy Kimmel, who are really hoping that doesn’t come out,” Rodgers said. “I’ll tell you what, if that list comes out, I definitely will be popping some sort of bottle.”

While appearing on “The Pat McAffee Show” again on Tuesday, Rodgers said that the statement released afterwards by ESPN senior vice president production Mike Foss didn’t really help the situation.

“I don’t understand… a Mike Foss comment because he didn’t help out either,” Rodgers said. “And I’m going to quote Mike Foss. He said, ‘Aaron made a dumb and factually incorrect joke about Jimmy Kimmel. That should never have happened. We all realized that in the moment.’ Mike, you’re not helping. You’re not helping because I just read earlier exactly what I said,”

“I feel like I made a statement about not wanting to be on a list to come out … ‘We realized that in the moment?’ What are you talking about?” he added.

Rodgers Never Called Kimmel A Pedophile

Rodgers also pointed out that he never claimed that Kimmel was a pedophile.

“I was referring to the fact that if there’s a list, which again, this hasn’t come out yet,” Rodgers said. “There was just a deposition, and there are names on it, then that would be the second time that soft brained, junior college student, wacko, anti-vax, antisemite, purveyor, spreader of misinformation, conspiracy theorist, MAGA, whatever other things that have been said by him and other people in the media would be right twice.”

“Let me just say, that is the truth, No. 1. No. 2, I totally understand how serious an allegation of pedophilia would be,” he continued. “So, for him to be upset about that, I get it. Did you watch the quote because that’s exactly what I said? Verbatim. What I said on the show.”

Rodgers went on to say that he wasn’t “stupid” enough to accuse Kimmel of pedophilia.

“I’m not stupid enough, even though you think I’m an idiot, and you made a lot of comments about my intelligence. But I’m not stupid enough to accuse you of that with absolutely zero evidence, concrete evidence,” he stated. “That’s ridiculous.”

“I’m glad and I think we can agree on something is that, one, those crimes are heinous and, two, and I’m glad you’re not on a list because those who are on the list — and this is what I think we can agree on — that, at minimum, there should be an inquiry into their involvement,” he concluded. “Especially if they went to the island. And, at maximum, there should be an investigation into it.”

    Rodgers Gets Banned

The next day, McAfee announced that Rodgers would not be appearing on his show again for the rest of the NFL season.

“So ‘Aaron Rodgers Tuesday: Season 4’ is done,” McEAfee said on Wednesday, according to Daily Mail. “There’s gonna be a lot of people that are happy with that – myself included to be honest with you.”

“The way it ended, it got real loud,” he added. “I’m happy that’s not going to be in my mentions going forward, which is great news. Some of his thoughts and opinions though do p*** off a lot of people.”

  • Pat McAfee Makes Sport Of Kendall Jenner’s Romantic Choices At ESPY Awards

Pat McAfee Makes Sport Of Kendall Jenner’s Romantic Choices At ESPY Awards

Pat McAfee celebrated the intersection of sports and celebrity at Wednesday’s ESPY Awards with a dig at Kendall Jenner and the NBA players she’s dated. (Watch the video below.)

One can rarely go wrong by using a star in the Kardashian reality universe as comic fodder, so McAfee proceeded.

Kendall Jenner’s starting five would win the NBA championship every single year,” McAfee joked, adding: “If they’re in the bubble, your ass is getting smoked.”

Jenner, a model with more than 293 million followers on Instagram, broke up with Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker in 2022 after reported romances with fellow ballers Blake Griffin, Ben Simmons, Jordan Clarkson and Kyle Kuzma.

Even Kim Kardashian has jested about Kendall’s alleged basketful of NBA romances. She was spotted wearing a “Kendall’s Starting Five” T-shirt with images of all the aforementioned athletes in a TikTok clip with daughter North last month.

So perhaps in a sense Jenner is still staying close to the game.
